Re: Masters of Ioun

Haven’t I mentioned before that my favorite roleplaying game setting of all time is AD&D2e’s Birthright ? In those games, you’d have an army of loyal soldiers, a castle, and a modestly sized duchy as part of your starting equipment . So would every other member of the party. Birthright was play...

Re: Masters of Ioun

Indeed. “Hiding behind an army of minions” is not only a very good “smarter not harder” option, it’s a style of gameplay I really enjoy and perfectly in keeping within the Planetary Romance genre convention. The trick is recruiting that army in the first place... All of the sudden I'm hearing that ...

Re: Swords and Sorcery: Defining the genre

I've probably gone on this rant before, but I've got a Love/Hate relationship with the Lorraine Williams era of TSR. On the one hand, the woman was an absolute tyrant who despite being an allegedly successful businesswoman, basically killed TSR with her business practices. She refused to let the ga...

Re: Castellia- A Fantasy Setting (Genies! Achairai! Arrowhawks! Hags!)

It's funny how near-universal the dislike of ugly old women is. Something about it really creeps out humanity on a base level. Especially prominent in Europe, where Atropos of the Fates was one of the most frightening of the Greek immortals. Ugly old men are seen as creatures of mockery, pity and h...

Re: Masters of Ioun

Only if you want the campaign to be as forgiving as the default High Fantasy settings that 5e defaults to. This campaign world is not meant to emulate that genre. It’s explicitly based on the Sword-and-Planet subgenre of the pulp fiction days. Combat is lethal, injuries are lasting, and healing is ...

Re: [M&M3e] Shrink-Ray, Affliction or Attack Extra?

I think I would use the first one, since there's a power purpotedly built for that particular scope I don't see the need to use another. However the key point is that the second contruction is a all-or-nothing effect, if it hits the opponent will be shrunk to a specific size determined by the power,...

Re: Swords and Sorcery: Defining the genre

Here’s another aspect of gods in these settings, that I think the default D&D role of Clerics has obscured: The gods may or may not be real, but people still believe in them. Completely. Conan never meets Krom on his mountain top and the Four Winds never let Subotai cast Cure Light Wounds. But ...

Re: The Jabverse: An O.C. Thread (Dr. Reverb, Teen Guard, The Infinite Sadness)

I really like the idea of reusing the gear from other criminals, sort of like a much lower key Superadaptoid or Amazo. The first character concept I've ever tried to play in a superhero game was based ona prison guard who stole tech from various Spider-Man foes. Unfortunately the GM was not on-boar...

Re: Jab's Builds! (Timber Wolf! Cosmic Boy! Kid Quantum! Karate Kid!

The oddest design decision in DCA (and I suspect this was a DC mandate and not Green Ronin’s idea) was that all the characters are based on their status during that odd few months Post- Infinite Crisis but Pre- Flashpoint . Hence things like Roy Harper having no bow! It seemed like it was a mix of ...

Re: Jab's Builds! (Timber Wolf! Cosmic Boy! Kid Quantum! Karate Kid!

I'd also say Jab's build is very solid, and a lot better than the official DCAU build, which actually had Val as a PL 10, below Lady Shiva. How in the Hell Lady Shiva warranted a higher PL than KARATE KID is just beyond me. OHHHHHHHHHH yeah- I forgot about that. They made Lady Shiva insanely tough,...

Re: Masters of Ioun

I love the idea of the setting, but I see big issue: Healing. D&D is built around resource management, and Hit Points are a major component of this. So there needs to be a method to heal mid-combat and immediately after combat. The Hit Dice system of 5e takes care nicely of the after combat por...

Re: Swords and Sorcery: Defining the genre

I just finished re-reading a few notes I made for my D&D games and I realized one critical elements of sword and sorcery: the limited interactions between gods and mortals. It's an established -- and often abused -- element in many classic D&D settings that the gods are real, often physical,...
