Re: Jab's Animal Builds (Raccoons! HOLY SHIT THERE’S ALSO GIANT RACCOONS!)

Post by pathfinderq1 »

I still remember, a few years back, walking out to the apartment dumpster one morning- flip the lid open, toss a bag in... and be greeted by an absolutely unholy caterwaul from one VERY annoyed raccoon. I shudder to think how big a trash can you would need for one of those giant ones...

It was, by the way, the second most disturbing sound I have ever heard an animal make (bears and lions are impressive, but not disturbing). Top of the list was: out in the woods one night, pitch dark, miles from civilization (and help), only to hear what I later learned was a bobcat (probably in heat). It absolutely sounded like a woman screaming in abject terror. Do not recommend that experience...

>Also: Saw an actual weasel on the woods walk this morning- didn't even know they lived hereabouts...

Tactics: Flee at all costs, rarely biting savagely with sharp teeth.

-Coatis are members of the family Procyonidae, and are thus related to Raccoons- they hail from Central & South America. They appear VERY frequently in Zoos that I've seen- they must be very easy to care for, being small and having a fairly open diet. They inhabit dry woodlands, can climb trees (though are mostly foragers who eat on the ground), and seem to be able to live about 17 years in captivity. Unlike Raccoons, they are diurnal, being active mostly by day, but can shift their schedules depending on whether or not they're hunted by humans, or rely on human habitations for their food (like Raccoons, they adapt well to city-living).

-There are a handful of types of Coatis, mostly known for specific regions, and they all have pretty well the same habits. The South American, or Ring-Tail Coati, inhabits most of the southern continent, and has rings going around its entire tail. The White-Nosed Coati is also called the "Coatimundi", and is the heaviest.

-Coatis are much worse fighters than Raccoons, being PL 1 in a scrap, but PL 1.5 to dodge.

haha, neat! There's a Bobcat living near my brother's family that they nicknamed "Barney Bobcat"- he comes through their yard sometimes in the mornings. Pretty crazy that he's never been hit by a car or anything.

-Huh- never heard of these things before. Olingos greatly resemble Kinkajous, minus the long tongue and prehensile tail, but are more closely related to Coatis. They are little known, to the point where only a couple have been studied overly much, and in a dead giveaway, most species are just known by the cardinal directions- Northern, Western, Southern, etc. The most recently-discovered, the Olinguito, was only described in *2013*! It turns out that an Olinguito named Ringerl had been touring zoos in the U.S. in the 1970s, and researchers could never figure out why she wouldn't breed with "other Olingos"- turns out she was a different species!

-Extremely slender, tiny animals of rodent-like size, Ringtails are among the smallest members of the Raccoon family. They're so odd-looking they're typically called "Ring-Tailed Cats", but said tail is the giveaway- they are Raccoon relatives. They are highly-carnivorous and adaptable, able to eat just about anything small, and typically will alter their diet to whatever's the most common in any given region. They are joked by biologists to be one of two animals to have "domesticated humans"- the cat is the other. Their typical method is to simply walk in like they own the place and "adopt" a human habitation as a place to live.

-The famously-cute Red Panda is an Endangered animal that is nonetheless very easy to keep in zoos, so I've seen a lot of them. Their appearance and name has caused all sorts of taxonomic confusion over the years, since they look so similar to the Giant Panda (a bear) and share the name and bamboo-eating traits, yet also greatly resemble the North American Raccoon. It turns out they're the sole survivor of their own genus- Ailuridae, which is now thought to be closer to the MUSTELIDS. Red Pandas are slow to breed and eat bamboo, which is notoriously-unhelpful for animals that need energy, requiring them to eat a lot of it to survive. Like Giant Pandas, they have a false thumb.

-Red Pandas are worse fighters than Raccoons, but can be just as quick, so still make PL 2 defensively.

Bears

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

URSIDAE FAMILY (Order- Carnivora):
-Oh yes, it is time- time to illuminate you all on the subject of the fiercest and most Godless of all creatures- the BEARS!! Being heathenistic killing machines isn't bad enough, so these largest of all terrestrial Carnivora members have adapted into various forms, each more evil than the last. From the unassuming cuteness of the Panda to the obvious Satanic power of the Kodiak, Bears are designed for killing first, eating second, and will stop at nothing until they consume your children. Saint Stephen of the House of Colbert has warned us of their encroachment upon our lands for years, and I consider it my duty as part of the Colbert Nation to continue his word, and stat out these demonic monsters so that you may practise killing them in your games.

-But in all seriousness, bears are all quite similar in appearance, though their habitats and lifestyles differ greatly. A couple are medium-sized carnivores (the Sun Bear is only 145 lbs. most of the time), while others weigh thousands of pounds. Most have very plain coats (with one notable exception in China), and all are generally quite round and huggable-looking, in spite of their great power. Some climb trees, others live in the Arctic, and nearly every continent has one (Australia & Antarctica are the only exceptions), evolving separately. They possess a tremendous sense of smell (easily equal to that of Dogs), but their eyesight and hearing suffer comparatively. Most Bears are omnivorous, with only the Polar Bear eating an exclusive diet of meat, and some only eat fish for their killing needs.

-Notably, Bears have evolved into a Plantigrade stance like humans, rather than the Digitigrade stance of most mammals (the "dog's hind leg" look). They move very slowly and deliberately, but can reach extremely high speeds if necessary (many can equal the speed of the fastest humans- and your slow ass ain't that). They're also so strong that they can kill many animals with one swipe of their huge paws.

Danger to Humans: Extreme, but often overstated. Many bear species encounter humans quite a lot, and have come to depend upon them as a source of food. This can leave them grouchy if humans don't give them the food they expect, and why most nature preserves recommend you do NOT feed the bears. An actual predatory attack by a bear is about the worst thing that can happen to you in North America, in terms of animal attacks- their sheer size, strength and ferocity is unmatched, and a big one can easily kill numerous people. Here, you will not encounter a more dangerous animal on land. Bears are responsible for more fatal attacks on humans than any other wild predatory animal in North America, beating out both Mountain Lions and Wolves, but naturally fall WAY behind Dogs, thanks to their numbers.

Intimidation 4 (+2)
Perception 2 (+3)
Stealth 6 (+8)

Advantages:
None

Powers:
"Animal Senses" Senses 4 (Acute & Extended Scent, Low-Light Vision, Scent-Tracking) [4]
Speed 1 (4 mph) [1]
"Natural Weapons- Claws & Teeth" Strength-Damage +1 [1]

Offense:

Natural Weapons +3 (+6 Damage, DC 21)

Defenses:
Dodge +5 (DC 15), Parry +5 (DC 15), Toughness +5, Fortitude +7, Will +4

Complications:

Reputation (Refusal to Breed)- Pandas are extremely rare, but don't seem to mind- they're famously impossible to breed in captivity, and eat the worst-possible diet for such a large animal.

-The Giant Panda is one of the most enigmatic animals on Earth, and is famous as a symbol of conservation and rarity. Initially discovered by white people only a little over a century ago (it's one of the last major fauna ever found- along with the Okapi, the Megamouth Shark and the Gorilla), it's incredibly rare, and seems to WANT to die: They consume almost entirely bamboo, which is a rare, low-protein diet that is very unfulfilling for such a large animal, forcing them to eat nearly all day long in a sedentary position. They're extremely hard to breed in captivity (and likely so in the wild as well), to the point where entire science teams must work on them round the clock to ensure they hump each other properly, and make tiny pink mini-Pandas. Yet despite all this, they're one of the planet's most beloved creatures, and such a major selling-point for a zoo that despite costing literally hundreds of millions of dollars to keep, ANY ZOO would give its eye-teeth for a pair of them, because the sheer amount of ticket sales more than make up for it. Nearby Calgary recently had a few, but they've been sent back during the COVID crisis, which is a bit shorter than the stay was intended to be.

-And they finally figured out it's authentically a BEAR, after debating about this for decades. Pandas are the weakest of the Bears, but aren't to be underestimated. Despite their cuddly exteriors, they are MUCH stronger than people, and heavy enough to really throw their weight around. Many people have been badly-hurt in zoos after straying too close to an animal that can do a lot of damage with their claws and teeth- remember, they're designed to cut down BAMBOO shoots.
