Microbats & Megabats
MICROBATS & MEGABATS:
-Bats are separated into two groups- the Microbats and Megabats. Microbats are tiny, echolocating hunters of insects (though some now eat fruit and/or nectar), while Megabats can often by very large, and eat only fruit. "Megabat" seems to be a new appelation to me, as I mostly remember them being called "Fruit Bats". Overall, 197 species of Megabat have been described- far fewer than the Microbats, but still a lot. They vary in size tremendously, with a third of all species weighing less than 50 grams, while others can weigh 3 lbs. and have 5'6" wingspans.

-This build represents many kinds of Bats- with 977 species in total (and probably more left undiscovered), there's no way I could cover most of them. Most bats are lightweight and have Mouse-level durability.
Types of Bats:
HOUSE BATS: Common in North America- include the widespread Big Brown Bat.
HOG-NOSED BATS: Kitty's Hot-Nosed Bat may be the world's smallest mammal- it is heavier than the Etruscan Shrew, but shorter. They are also called "Bumblee Bats" for this reason.
HORSESHOE BATS: Named for their "nose-leaf" that is shaped like a horseshoe. Likely the source for many SARS-type illnesses, including Covid.
PALLAS'S LONG-TONGUED BAT: Has a really long tongue that laps up nectar, but is related to the predatory bats. Has the fastest recorded metabolism of any mammal- similar to that of a hummingbird.
MOUSE-TAILED BATS: Hail from Africa, and named for their tiny, skinny tails.
SUCKER-FOOTED BATS: The only bats hailing from Madagascar. Have prominent "suckers" on their feet that let them adhere to the smooth-surfaced inner linings of trees.
Hollow-Faced Bat.
OTHER BATS: There are countless other types- Slit-Faced, Mouse-Eared, Disc-Winged, Hollow-Faced, Sheath-Tailed, etc. All have similar stats, and are small creatures.

And of course there's the Great White Bat or 'Shikaka' as it's known by Wachati and Wachutu tribes.

-Also called False Vampire Bats, these are the largest predatory bat- most Bats eat insects, but these actively hunt other bats, rodents, and even doves and cuckoos. Ideally, they would "hit harder" than regular bats, but this just isn't possible at such a small scale.

-Bats are spectacularly-weird creatures, and people are often quite afraid of them, owing to their strange appearance. The Proboscis here was the sole bat I statted up in my initial 3e run, because he's very typical of insectivorous bats- an Echolocation-packing, flying animal. They show up in smaller groups than many bats, which are known to gather together in SPECACULARLY-large numbers- one cave in Texas is home to a group of MILLIONS of the little buggers!

-These infamous creatures, from the family Desmodontinae, are also South American (and thus a bit unlikely to be the minions of a Transylvanian Vampire). They fly around, find livestock (or, you know, humans), make a tiny incision, and lap up blood for about half an hour, preventing clotting with their saliva. For some reason, their dietary habits have made them unpopular with people. Only three species feed on blood- the Common Vampire Bat, Hairy-Legged Vampire Bat & White-Winged Vampire Bat.
-Hematophagy, or blood-drinking, is highly unusual as an evolutionary trait, as it can lead to liquid excess and iron poisoning. It's not quite clear just how these animals evolved to feed in this manner- possibly using blood as a byproduct of eating blood-drinking insects? They are much more capable at "walking" than most bats, who've long since lost the ability to travel without flight, and appear to have minor thermoreceptors to help them find blood vessels more easily. Vampire Bats also engage in food-sharing- they need blood at least every other night, but may not always find it. Thus, they may "beg" more successful bats for a share.

-Many "Megabats" weigh less than a pound, and are not that different from Microbats, save for a lack of Echolocation. They also aren't anywhere near as good at fighting, since they eat static things like fruits. this include things like Short-Nosed Fruit Bats, Spotted Winged Fruit Bats, Epauletted Fruit Bats (named for fluffy glands on the shoulders of females), Egyptian Fruit Bats (dispersed all over Africa), Pygmy Fruit Bats and dozens of other things usually called "____ Fruit Bats".

-These are the larger "Megabats"- the Flying Foxes, largest of all bats. They're called "Flying Foxes" since their heads are elongated, with pointy snouts- many actually do very closely resemble foxes. These generally weight 1-3 lbs., and are slightly more powerful than the tiny ones. Most of them live around Oceania, the Philippines, and Australia. The largest is the Great Flying Fox of Indonesia, hitting 3.5 lbs., while close sizes include the Indian Flying Fox.
-A Flying Fox keeps most of powers of a Small Megabat, but increases hitting power and durability.

... so it would make sense for an Australian "Bat-Man" to call himself the Flying Fox, eh?
