Disabled (Aquatic)- Otters are ungainly on land, and have poor long-distance vision outside of water.

Era: Modern
Range: East Asia & Western North America
Stereotypes: Kindly & friendly.
Colouring: Brown
Size: Up to 4 feet long (18-90 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Large Groups (5-17)
Diet: Fish, shellfish, small reptiles.
Tactics: Sea floor foraging.

-The Sea Otter is an endangered marine Otter nearly as large as the Giant, benig about 30-99 lbs. They forage the ocean floor, and are a major keystone species that controls sea urchin populations. Extensive fur-hunting (they have the thickest fur of any mammal) led to only 1-2,000 animals existing, but they've bounced back a bit, and formerly lived all along the western edge of North America and far eastern Asia. Sea Otters keep well in zoos & aquariums, and so are commonly seen. They are unique among mustelids for not having anal scent glands, nor living in dens- they are completely aquatic. Like Giant Otters, they use rocks as tools for breaking open shells. The famous "Otters Holding Hands" video was of a pair of Sea Otters at the Vancouver Aquarium: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=epUk3T2Kfno.

-Statistically, a Sea Otter is almost the same as a Giant Otter- it's fatter and heavier, but not as long.

Other Large Otters:

AFRICAN CLAWLESS OTTER: The second-largest freshwater Otter (weighing 26-80 lbs.), they lack claws and have partly webbed feet. Their greatest threats are crocodiles, fish eagles and pythons.

Stereotypes: Kindly & friendly.
Colouring: Brown
Size: Up to 4 feet long (18-80 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Fish, shellfish, small reptiles.
Tactics: Rapid-swimming sneak attacks.

-Otters are the only Mustelids to escape a villainous reputation entirely- they're largely-seen as adorable, friendly forest critters. There are a handful of types, with the Giant Otter, a South American Mustelid, being the largest (around 71 lbs.). Otters are actually worldwide, existing on all major continents save Australia & Antarctica- proof that the world was once linked together. They all resemble each other greatly, with other varieties merely being smaller- the North American & European River Otters are around 20 lbs. maximum, and an African variety being around 35 lbs. The smallest is the Oriental Small-Clawed Otter (11 lbs.), while the Sea Otter is almost as big as the Giant Otter, but is quite Endangered (it lives in a small area between Asia & North America).

-Otters are the only animals other than Primates known to regularly-use tools to feed. They are known to use rocks and other tools to crack open hard Crustacean shells. Otters are quick and spritely, able to avoid predators and catch small, fast-moving fish.

-Otters are merely PL 3, being less fighty than their fellow Mustelids. The other, smaller varieties are generally much weaker and less-tough. They're one of the only animals with Improvised Tools- most other animals lack the Intelligence to do it.

Offense:
Unarmed +4 (+1 Damage, DC 14)
Natural Weapons +8 (+4 Damage, DC 19)
Initiative +6

Defenses:
Dodge +6 (DC 16), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +4, Fortitude +7, Will +6

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Wolverines cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.

Total: Abilities: 10 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 11 / Powers: 20 / Defenses: 11 (76)

Era: Modern
Range: Northernmost North America, Europe & Asia
Stereotypes: Cranky, vicious.
Colouring: Brown
Size: Up to 3.5 feet long (18-31 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Opportunistic hunter- small mammals, hoofed mammals, carrion, etc.
Tactics: Vicious sneak attacks or snarling full-on assaults.

-Wolverines are so legendary for their ferocity that they give their name to the famously scrappy icon of Marvel comics- Logan himself! These things are so nasty that despite being only 31 pounds at maximum, they have seen BEARS away from their kills! I've even seen one chase a pair of Wolves away from a freshly-killed Deer. These things are TOUGH, and everyone knows it. And more to the point, they're SMART, able to find hunter's stored meat in areas where no other animal should have been able to go. In trees, in houses, whatever- it doesn't matter; they'll get to it. They eat just about anything (another name for them is "glutton"), and in any amount. They're tough enough to kill prey as large as the higher Cervids (Deer, Elk, even MOOSE!), so long as the prey is tired and/or in deep snow and can't defend themselves properly.

-A Wolverine is a small predator, but a vicious one, adding up to PL 6 (higher than a standard dog or wolf!) simply by virtue of its horrible fighting tactics. Sneaking about, dropping down, gnashing with its teeth repeatedly, and its famous rage make for a scary threat, especially if used in tandem (imagine a villain using a gang of 20 of these bastards).

-Wolverines are the largest land-based mustelids (Most Otters are bigger, but are more easy-going aquatic creatures), and stat up quite evenly with others like Badgers (who are fatter and sillier-looking, but JUST as mean, despite one point less accuracy). Skunks are in the same family as well, and aren't nearly as dangerous in combat, but have an absolutely NOXIOUS odour, able to see away nearly any kind of threat. It's not uber enough for high ranks of Nauseate, but anyone you know won't want to be around you for about a day or so. Wolverines are kind of musky and smelly too, but not to nearly as bad an extent. Note the Sleight of Paw- Wolverines get into all kinds of stuff.

The Mongoose Family

Post by Jabroniville »

VIVERRIDAE (Civets & Stuff), HERPESTIDAE (Mongooses & Meerkats) & EUPLEURIDAE (Fossa & Madagarscaran Mongooses):
-This is a series of lesser-known animals, all a part of Carnivora, and many of the members are ULTRA-obscure. It's likely that 90% of the people you know had only heard of one member of this Family- the Mongoose- until The Lion King brought us #2- I know it was true in MY case. I was like "what the hell is a CIVET?" Civets and their relatives are basically long, thin predators who excel at climbing, and focus on speed. They're sort of like a combination of Cats & Weasels. The smallest are barely larger than mice, and they max out at 30-50 lbs.

-It's a bit controversial amongst zoologists to classify these as one Family. Some believe that the Fossa & Mongoose are separate from the Civet Family, while others include all three here into Viverridae. But like I've said before, the classifications are kind of meaningless, considering nature works more like a giant tree of descendents than strictly-classified Families. The Fossa's group is believed to come entirely from a single individual Viverrid that ended up in Madagascar.

-Viverrids, known for the Civets & Genets, are considered to be the most primitive of Carnivora, being less-specialized than any of the others. They are typically slender, climbing animals.

Tactics: Silent stalking, followed by agile pounce.

-Meerkats are proof of Disney's eternal power- they went from a totally-obscure relative of Mongooses & Civets to one of the most-recognizable animals in their Superfamily overnight, all thanks to Timon from The Lion King. Quirky shows like Meerkat Manor and the ease of caring for the Rodent-sized critters in zoos added together to give them a lasting popularity. They're one of the few animals of their type to band together, living in giant underground colonies like Prairie Dogs do. Lacking the power of their relatives, they are minor threats at-best.

Encounter Groups: Solitary.
Diet: Birds, eggs, rodents, lizards, snakes.
Tactics: Silent stalking, followed by agile pounce.

-Of this entire group, the Mongoose was by far the most famous for a century, owing to the popularity of Rikki-Tikki-Tavi, a hero from Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book. Rikki, a Grey Mongoose, was a killer of snakes, giving the species a reputation for the same, though they rarely go out of their way to hunt them. They ARE often immune to Cobra Venom, though, which is quite unusual. Their agile way of fighting is very entertaining to watch, turning them into a bit of a spectator bloodsport in some parts of the world.

-Tiny but fighty, the Mongoose is essentially like a Wildcat- an agile, elite hunter with great accuracy and defenses.

Since that movie took place primarily on Madagascar (and is named afterit), it makes sense that a lot of its animals got used. I had no idea what a Fossa was until that movie. It probably made lemurs more popular too, though I don't have any evidence of that.

-There are other Mongooses similar to the Indian Grey, but they're less famous.

Similar Animals:
EGYPTIAN MONGOOSE: Living throughout Africa, these are immune to snake venom as well, and are the same size as the Indian Grey Mongoose.

Image

RUDDY MONGOOSE: These fuzzy-looking Mongooses share territory in India with the Stripe-Necked & Indian Grey Mongoose. They mostly live in forests.

Image

SLENDER MONGOOSE: These guys are very, very long, thin creatures, but are also capable of killing venomous snakes. They don't comprise a large part of their diet, however.
