Total: Abilities: 4 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 1 / Powers: 6 / Defenses: 7 (29)

Era: Pre-1936.
Range: Australia
Stereotypes: None (too unknown). An evil, bloodthirsty poultry-thief in its day.
Colouring: Grey with black stripes.
Size: Up to 4 feet long (30-80 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or small groups.
Diet: Bandicoots, Tasmanian Emu.
Tactics: Run to exhaustion, then attack with wide bite.

-The Thylacine, or Tasmanian Tiger, is notable for being one of the few notable, medium-sized animals to die out within modern times- a true sign of our negative impact upon the world. Many creatures were wiped out within the timeframe of mankind's existence, but not many of them lived to be FILMED ON CAMERA. The Thylacine was- including one lonely fellow that soon died- taking the entire species with him in 1936.

-Resembling some weird mix of Civet, Tiger, Wolf and Fox, the Tasmanian Tiger was in actuality just a standard Marsupial, albeit one evolved into a doglike predator's frame, with a gigantic mouth that led to it getting a demonic reputation- this maw could open a full 120 degrees, and is the Thylacine's most-distinctive quality. Extinct on mainland Australia for centuries before Europeans showed up, its Tasmanian stragglings were wiped out slowly by a combination of habitat loss, the introduction of dogs, and bounties from men afraid of their capability at killing livestock. There are reports to this very day of the thing showing up in people's barnyards and things like that, but it's fully into "Cryptid" territory, with the last-known specimen dying in a zoo in the 1930s. The evidence is somewhat stronger than with, say, Sasquatch or the Loch Ness Monster, because we KNOW the thing existed, and within the last hundred years, too. Much attention has been given to it in Australia, where it is the benefactor of several people wishing to bring it back from Extinction via cloning and the like (though some are fraudsters). There have also been Thylacines showing up in video games (Ty the Tasmanian Tiger and Wendell T. Wolf on Taz-Mania), but they're still pretty obscure- most people have never heard of one.

-Reports on just what the Thylacine was capable of vary. Though its mouth was huge, its bite wasn't overly-strong. It apparently had a good sense of smell, but wasn't nearly as fast as Canine species, having a mroe Kangaroo-like hopping gait. Some people say it gave off a bad odor when threatened, while others state is was odorless. Its likely prey was the Tasmanian Emu (Extinct in the 1840s), and smaller Bandicoots. It was the largest surviving relative of animals that include the Tasmanian Devil, Quoll & Numbat. It was one of only two surviving marsupials to have pouches in both males and females- the other being the still-living Water Possum.

-Thylacines are about the size of small-ish Wolves, being about 70 lbs. on average. I figure them for PL 4.

-And now we come to the animal only really known because of the famous video game series Crash Bandicoot- Bandicoots are a family of twenty different species (Crash is an Eastern Barred Bandicoot, apparently). They're actually named from an Indian rat called the Bandicoot Rat- "Bandicoot" meaning "Pig-Rat". The name likely comes from their long noses. They eat a variety of things- some are omnivorous, heribvorous or carnivorous. Their physiology is unusual enough to cause debate about which marsupials they're most closely related to- the Koala & Wombat or the carnivorous Tasmanian Devil & Numbat.

-Bandicoots are fairly Rabbit-like in size (usually 2-5 lbs.), but are slower and not as good at fighting- all of their prey is tiny and they're incapable of defense against predators like foxes.

Types of Bandicoots:
LONG-NOSED BANDICOOTS: These are the largest Bandicoots, including the Long-Nosed, Eastern Barred & Western Barred Bandicoots. The Eastern, as mentioned, is the basis for Crash Bandicoot. These are the least-colorful Bandicoots, being sandy-brown. They're omnivorous and about 2-4 lbs.

Image

SPINY BANDICOOTS: Five species hailing from New Guinea.
MOUSE BANDICOOTS: Another New Guinea type, with five species. Includes the Pygmy Bandicoot.
DESERT BANDICOOT: An extinct species, probably killed off by the red fox and habitat loss from changing wildfires in the 1930s & '40s.

Image

PIG-FOOTED BANDICOOTS: A pair of extinct species with some extremely bizarre adaptations, including HOOVES on their two front toes, and horse-like back legs. They were incredibly rare even in the 1800s, living across a wide, sparse area, and were only recorded by science in the 1920s, shortly before they disappeared.

Image

BILBY: A few species of extremely large-eared Bandicoots with long burrowing claws. Only the 2-8 lb. Greater Bilby survives- the Lesser died out in the 1950s. Some success has been made in turning them into a locally-beloved creature, with Easter Biblies replacing Easter Bunnies.
OTHERS: Other types of Bandicoots include the Striped, Golden & Brown Bandicoots.

And that does it for the Marsupials! I think that covers the entire spectrum of living and dead ones that are differentiated from each other. Next up... the weirdest mammals ever- Monotremes!

Monotremes

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

ORDER- MONOTREMATA:
-Pretty much an ancient mammal set, the Monotremes are egg-laying creatures that excrete milk from their skin instead of actual nipples, meaning they're BARELY mammals, but enough to count. Only two animals come from this group- Echidnas and Platypi. They don't look remotely alike (one has spiny quills, the other a duck's bill and beaver's tail), but apparently they're related. Go figure.

Rumors in the criminal underworld throughout the Tri-State Area indicate that there may be a monotreme superhero out there. But, that’s ridiculous.

Total: Abilities: -24 / Skills: 10--5 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 17 / Defenses: 5 (9)

-The Echidna is the much less popular or well-known Monotreme compared to the Platypus. Short, round, spiny creatures, they evolved from an aquatic, platypus-like ancestor, but developed into terrestrial mammals with sharp spines on their bodies. Short-Beaked Echidnas eat ants and termites, while the three Long-Beaked Echidnas eat worms and insect larvae. Like Platypi, they are egg-laying mammals with electroreceptors, but they're a fair bit larger- about 9-15 lbs. Due to a slow metabolism and less stress, they are among the most long-lived small mammals- they have been recorded as living 45-50 years. Baby "puggles" are born from a single egg, hatch via a reptilian-esque egg tooth, and suckle inside a pouch from two "milk patches" (they do not have nipples)- all in all, another extremely bizarre creature.

-The Short-Beaked Echidna is a common animal found throughout Australia, while the Long-Beaked Echidnas are from New Guineae, and are incredibly rare. The Sir David's Echidna is so rare it is known from a single collected specimen, and was thought to be extinct until its distinctive "nose-pokes" were found in a mountainside area.

-Echidnas are non-threatening (their bone-spurs are not venomous), but add Hedgehog-like aspects to this small mammal's set-up.

Total: Abilities: -24 / Skills: 10--5 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 32 / Defenses: 5 (20)

Era: Modern
Range: Australian waterways
Stereotypes: Odd. Good-natured.
Colouring: Very dark brown/black
Size: Up to 2 feet long (1-6 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or pairs.
Diet: Shrimp, larvae.
Tactics: Attack furiously with poison spurs, biting and smashing with flippers.

-The Platypus is so screwed up. Think about it: It's a mammal that LAYS EGGS. But also produces some milk. And has a duck's bill. A beaver's tail. POISON SPURS on the flippers of males. It even has electrical sensors (monotremes are the only mammals other than one kind of dolphin to be able to use electroreception). There's a damn good reason why scientists called B.S. on the first people who said they found some, and required actual proof. These super-primitive mammals are easily the weirdest creatures on Earth- you think the friggin' Displacer Beast or Owlbear are weird, crack-induced creatures? This guy is at LEAST as weird as anything in your average Monster Manual. And thus, it needs statting.

-Platypi are mostly aquatic, swimming mammals that can live for up to 17 years in captivity. Their mortality rate in the wild is actually rather solid- it seems they don't have that many predators. The young are born blind and hairless. Their evolution is poorly understood- their genome contains some aspects of reptile and bird DNA (particularly in the realm of laying eggs), meaning that monotremes possibly spun off of the mammal lineage very early and never lost those aspects, unlike what became placental mammals. All monotremes excrete urine, feces & reproductive goo (to use the scientific term) via the same orifice- a cloaca.

-Curiously, there are few Platypi in pop culture. The most famous is probably Perry the Platypus in the once wildly-popular show Phineas & Ferb, who was a weird chattering pet that was secretly a super-agent who fought an evil mad scientist.

-Platypi are essentially small creatures with no ability to really injure humans... but are packing a venomous spur that can kill smaller animals like dogs. But don't worry- humans will suffer no effect worse than mere constant, intense, incurable pain for months on end!

-Something as insane as the Platypus It requires an EPIC VERSION. Throw THIS at your party next time they get too confident, or start taking things too seriously.

-A Giant Platypus is a large, vicious opponent, with multiple tricks of the trade- it can detect things at range via "Electrolocation"- picking out the electrical signals sent out by muscles and following things in the darkest of waters. It's strong as hell, doing +8 damage with all it's weapons. It also has a VERY nasty "Venomous Spur" attack, doing Affliction 9 with TWO conditions (basically intense pain, following the Paralyzed & Exhausted trains), Linked to Weaken Strength. The whole thing is essentially PL 8 except for the PL 8.5 Affliction.

Like Bandicoots, I only know Echidnas are a thing because of a video game character, in this case Knuckles (who doesn't chuckle), as well as the mythological Mother of Monsters (who is probably where the animals got the name from)

Bats

Post by Jabroniville »

"He who doubts that one man can change the world never ate an uncooked bat."

ORDER- CHIROPTERA:
-Bats are the only mammals to possess true flight, not just gliding like the Sugar Gliders, Flying Squirrels and other membrane-limbed small mammals. Their wings are just extremely large hands, with elongated fingers featuring a big membrane stretched across them, allowing them natural flight. The Order varies in size from the 5'7" wingspan of the Flying Fox, to the Hog-Nosed Bat's tiny 6-inch span. Surprisingly (to me anyways), Chiroptera is a HUGE Order that contains nearly a quarter of all mammal species (977 in total!), surpassed only by Rodentia.

-They live in many habitats, and are generally feared for their creepiness (they're very Uncanny Valley-ish, with "hands" that are incredibly warped and different from our own, yet they're recognizably mammalian), but are great hunters of insects, or just plain-old fruit-eaters. Of course, one particular breed (not native to North America, don't worry) drinks BLOOD, making small wounds on large animals and lapping up the plasma. Fear of bats had generally diminished a tad... until, of course, they caused a little pandemic of sorts about a year ago, after a Chinese wet market kinda/probably led to Coronavirus hitting humanity. Bats are a HUGE vector for disease, as they live for a long time, and in vast numbers, more or less crawling all over each other, pooping and pissing everywhere. Like many smaller animals, their large numbers is their greatest defense- Bats are usually too small to handle anything else- many predators spend their time just hanging out in bat caves, eating the creatures at their leisure (even large centipedes do this).

-Like Dolphins, Bats use Echolocation- in this case, to fly about at night and detect smaller, flying prey- far from "blind", they just use their hearing more than their vision. This is an extreme form of Accurate Hearing, allowing them to make last-second switches in position and speed to catch tiny prey- usually small bugs. Otherwise, their stats are unimpressive- Bats are incredibly lightweight and easily-beaten by just about everything.
