-These are offshoots of the African Elephant (or possibly its Forest descendant) that made it to Europe and Western Asia before being hunted to extinction or affected by climate change. Even larger than most Elephants, they are named for their unusually-straight tusks. A relative of the Palaeoxodons, P. namadicus, may have been the largest land mammal ever- only known from small bone deposits, it is potentially just as tall as Paraceratherium was, and would be even more massive, owing to its body proportions. But so little is known about it, it's hard to say.

-Hyraxes are particularly notable for me because they often end up in zoos, sometimes near the Elephants, simply by virtue of two things: they're cheap and easy to care for, and they're closely related to Elephants, as well as Manatees & Dugongs. Despite all of these animals looking COMPLETELY different, right down to massive changes in size, they all have missing scrotums, testicles resting next their kidneys, and a few other things. They also have tiny tusks in their upper jaw, and are adapted to living in rocky terrain. Despite being more rodent-like in appearance, they are part of their own Order- Hyracoidae, making up five species of similar animals- the Rock Hyrax, Yellow-Spotted Rock Hyrax, Tree Hyrax, Southern Tree Hyrax & Western Tree Hyrax. All but one species live exclusively in Africa- the other is in the Middle East as well.

-Hyraxes are effectively similar to the Pika, being small, 5-lb. animals who aren't much of a challenge to anything.

And that does it for all of the hoofed mammals! Once you get through all the damn antelopes and my obsession with writing all-new builds for a +1 variance in hitting power, the list becomes much easier :).

Next up- Xenarthra! And then it's just a few more families and then I'm done with mammals! Except the Primates & Cetaceans number in the hundreds, so we'll probably be going till the damn summer!

Xenarthra

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

XENARTHRA (Anteaters & Stuff):
-This curious Order contains some recognizable animals, but few we think of that often in today's world- their once considerable sizes have since diminished to being man-sized or smaller. They are known for their curious teeth, unusual backbone joints, and the fact that the three Family groups in the Order bear NO PHYSICAL RESEMBLANCE TO EACH OTHER- an Anteater, Sloth and Armadillo are ridiculously-distinct from one another. Armadillos have the most teeth known to mammalia (100-300)- Anteaters, the least (none).

-I'll also include the Pangolins, which are in a separate order, because they're so similar.

Pangolins

Post by Jabroniville »

PHOLIDOTA (Pangolins):
-These nutty little creatures are one of nature's weirdest-looking mammals. When I showed one to my then-roommate, he gave out an incredulous "Is that a SUPER-VILLAIN?" Their armored body resembles a long pinecone with a tail. They are similar to Anteaters & Armadillos in appearance, and are toothless, long-tongued, big-clawed bug-eaters- however, they are separate from them, linked more-closely to Carnivora. Only seven species are known, and then go from Africa to East Asia. Most are very Endangered, as their skin and meat are high in demand, and the small animals have little defense against humans, aside from some pungents musk coming from their anal glands. They are considered the "most-trafficked animal in the world", owing to use of their scales in Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Claws +2 (+0 Damage, DC 15)

Defenses:
Dodge +4 (DC 14), Parry +4 (DC 14), Toughness +2, Fortitude +1, Will +1

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Pangolins cannot speak to humans, nor use their claws to easily manipulate objects.
Disabled (Poor Eyesight & Hearing)

Total: Abilities: -12 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 27 / Defenses: 2 (28)

Era: Modern
Range: Southern Africa.
Stereotypes: Probably like Armadillos (cowardly ball-rollers)
Colouring: Brown, tan.
Size: Up to 3 feet long (30-40 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary.
Diet: Termites, Ants & other Insects.
Tactics: Attack with strong claws. Highly-defensive.

-An iconic Pangolins are these large, heavy, terrestrial ones, usually between 40-70 lbs. They are extremely durable creatures, rolling into balls more efficiently than even Three-Banded Armadillos can, resisting attacks from even large predators like Lions. Most of these are from Africa. The Giant Pangolin can reach 72 lbs, and walks on its hind legs, with its upper body leaning forwards. The Ground Pangolin, which walks the same way, weighs up to 40 lbs., and is quite tough for such a small animal.

-PL 3 Defensively, the Pangolin is only PL 1 offensively, as its main method of eating is to tear open termite mounds. They still have big claws, though.

Until reading this, I had no clue these groups were related to one another... Not that I ever really gave it much thought. But, y'know what? If you were to flip an anteater upside down and hang it from a tree, it kinda would look like a sloth with a funny nose.

Slap a Tyrannosaurus-like toothy maw on a pangolin and make it 50 meters tall and it would look right at home in a Godzilla movie. (Anguirus needs another quadruped daikaiju to hang out with!)

-A secondary grade of large Pangolins, these are usually 10-35 lbs. The Indian Pangolin is about 22-35 lbs, and the Chinese Pangolin is 10-15 lbs. They're just a notch weaker and less durable, but otherwise similar to the bigger ones, with the same diet and everything.

-These Pangolins are much smaller than the others, weighing about 5-20 lbs., and have extremely long, prehensile tails and much smaller scales. They include the Sunda Pangolin (20 lbs.) & Long-Tailed Pangolin (5 lbs.).

-Arboreal Pangolins are PL 0 offensively, PL 2 defensively because they have the same armored bodies as the larger varieties, just at a smaller scale.
