You know, I have to give Mortal Kombat vs DCU credit for a few things. One was its really the only video game where I can play as Captain Marvel, and not only that, but a GOOD portrayal of Cap. The other was that it had a decent if simple story that could have made for a fun comic.

He's also technically in Injustice, but was renamed to Shazam there because the New 52 is terrible and here's hoping they reverse that with Rebirth. Given that they've been reversing just about everything else...

I generally consider "Nu-Shazam" and "Captain Marvel" to be separate characters, akin to Earth 1 and Earth 2 Superman, although Nu-Billy is less E2 Kal-L and more E3 Ultraman. And given Injustice managed to make the ugly Nu-52 outfit even worse, showed him being a willing stooge of Evil Superman and then get murdered casually by someone he should be an even match for, I wouldn't have considered it a good portrayal of the character regardless. The only good thing I can say is that Billy alone actually stood up to Evil Supes when it counted.

I don't think they will change him back, unfortunately, because of Marvel's Captain Marvel and the confusion/litigation involved. He'll always be Captain Marvel to from here on out, though. I tried to go with Shazam, but it just felt...wrong.

And I do plan on an Injustice version of him in this run, actually, if I don't lose focus before I get to him. I'm up to 44 potential builds on top of the reworking of the 20+ MK builds I did a couple of years ago and the list keeps growing as I do more research on some of the games.

COMPLICATIONS:
Muddled Past: Sometimes Donna’s past is unclear even to her.
Paradox Bridge: Troy is a bridge between different worlds, which often pulls her into the middle of important, world-changing conflicts.
Relationships: Her sister Diana, her sister Cassie Sandsmark, her close friends Nightwing, Arsenal, Raven, Starfire and Garth.
Temper: Troy is a trained warrior and directs her fury into combat. Sometimes that fury, caused by the traumatic events in her life her, allow her temper to get away from her.

Abilities 114 + Skills 19 (38 ranks) + Advantages 12 + Powers 54 + Defenses 8 = 207 / 207

Build Comments: I had to rebuild Donna to be more in line with my Diana for my setting so here she is. I always liked Donna Troy, even if it never seemed like the DC writers had any clue what to do with her sometimes. I guess that’s true of her sister Diana, too, at times. Her DCU background is more muddled than Hawkman’s, which is saying something.

I had to use that quote from her from Countdown when she Jason Todd, Kyle Rayner and one of the Monitors were trying to find Ray Palmer to save the Multiverse. I can't remember who she was fighting, but I laughed out all loud 'cause all I could think about was a shot of her knocking Juggernaut out and saying that line.

Secret Origins: Donna was orphaned by her birth mother Dorothy Hinckley, a dying unwed teen who had given her up for adoption. After Donna's adoptive father Carl Stacey was killed in a work-related accident, her adoptive mother Fay Stacey gave her up for adoption again, unable to raise the toddler because of mounting expenses.

When she was 13, Donna came into contact with Diana Prince, the secret identity of Wonder Woman, and the two formed a bond. Donna had become a troubled youth, but with Diana’s guidance she turned things around. While coming home from school one day, she came upon a burning building and raced inside when she heard cries for help. She rescued two small children, but was badly burned and injured by falling debris just before Wonder Woman arrived.

Diana quickly flew her to Themiscrya where she gave Donna her blood and prayed to the gods to save her. Donna recovered and remained on Themiscrya for a couple of years, recovering, and then training as an Amazon. She was adopted as a daughter by Hippolyta, officially becoming Diana’s little sister and the second princess of Paradise Island. She soon began to exhibit superhuman powers and abilities similar to Diana and decided to return to the US and took up the identity of Wonder Girl.

The Story so Far: Donna became one of the founding members of the Teen Titans, even suggesting the name of the group. She was with the team for years until they eventually disbanded. She attended college and married a man named Terry Long, while remaining a superhero part time and has filled in as Wonder Woman on a few occasions. Eventually she and Terry divorced and he was later killed.

Eventually, an android named Indigo appeared, badly damaged and in need of repair. In her attempts to repair herself and call for aid from other androids, she caused a Superman robot to go rogue during a meeting of the Teen Titans and Young Justice; Donna and Omen were killed during the attempts to stop it.

Donna was reborn during the events of the Infinite Crisis and discovered that like every other person after the Crisis on Infinite Earths, she is a merger of every alternate version of Donna Troy in the Multiverse. Unlike everyone else, Donna is the repository of knowledge of every alternate universe version of herself and remembered the original Multiverse.

She later learned that it was the Titans of Myth who answered Diana’s prayer those years ago that saved her. During a gap in time that she could not account for, The Titans of Myth, realizing that she was the child who was destined to save them from some impending threat, brought her to New Cronus and implanted false memories within her mind to make her believe she was the original Goddess of the Moon and wife of Coeus. The Titans of Myth incited war between other worlds near New Cronus in order to gain new worshippers. They would then use the combined power of their collective faith to open a passageway into another reality, where they would be safe from destruction. This was not without casualties, however. Sparta (who was restored to full mental health and stripped of the bulk of her power) had been made an officer in the Titans of Myth's royal military. She was sacrificed by the Titans of Myth in an attempt to lay siege to the planet, Minosyss, which housed a Sun-Eater factory miles beneath its surface. Sparta's death had inadvertently helped trigger Donna's memory restoration. Athyns had also reappeared by this time, and aided the heroes and the Mynossian resistance in battling the Titans of Myth. It was then that Hyperion, the Titan of the Sun, revealed Donna's true origins to her and ordered her to open a passageway into another reality by means of a dimensional nexus that once served as a gateway to the Multiverse itself, within the Sun-Eater factory's core. This turned out to be the Titans of Myth's real target. Donna did so, but fearing they would simply continue with their power-mad ambitions, she banished most of them into Tartarus. However, Hyperion and his wife, Thia, were warned of the deception at the last moment. Enraged, they turned on Donna, intending to kill her for the betrayal, but Coeus activated the Sun-Eater to save her and Arsenal. As the Sun-Eater began absorbing their vast solar energies, Hyperion and Thia tried to escape through the Nexus, but they were both torn apart by the combined forces of the Nexus' dimensional pull and the Sun-Eater's power. Coeus, who had learned humility and compassion from Donna, vowed to guard the gateway to make certain the other Titans of Myth remained imprisoned forever.

During the Blackest Night crossover, Donna has a horrific encounter with her deceased husband Terry, revived as an undead being by the Black Lantern Corps. She is bitten by Terry, becoming "infected" by the Black Lantern's power. Donna, along with Superboy, Kid Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern (Hal Jordan) and several other resurrected heroes, began to be targeted by Nekron, the being responsible for the Black Lanterns. Donna's previous status as a deceased allowed for her to be transformed into a Black Lantern. However, unlike the other heroes, Donna was converted by being infected with the Black Lantern's power rather than having a ring forced on her. She was saved by The Entity and participated in the final battle against Nekron, leading to his defeat.

Since joined the Justice League for a short time after but has since joined with Nightwing and his new incarnation of The Outsiders.

Characterization: Donna is a very well respected hero and has become a living key to the multiverse, even after it’s restoration.

Friends and Foes: Donna is very close to Wonder Woman, with the two snaring a psychic bond. She has also formed a big sister relationship with the new Wonder Girl, Cassandra Sandsmark. She is close to her original Titans teammates as well, with she and Dick being like a brother and sister.

COMPLICATIONS:
Daddy Issues: Her biological father is the undead pirate Cervantes DeLeon.
Obsession: Her adopted parents lost their lives due to her father's obsession with the Soul Edge sword, which in turn has fueled her obsession with destroying it.
Reputation: Ivy has developed a reputation by some as evil, but she's not, she is just single minded of purpose and direct. Regardless, it makes people reluctant to ally with her.

Abilities 76 + Skills 19 (38 ranks) + Advantages 29 + Powers 23 + Defenses 13 = 160 / 160

Build Comments: Ah, Ivy. One of the many fanservice legends in fighting games. Yet and still, she’s fun to play and a icon of the Soul Calibur series. Her Snake Sword (which has several actual names) gives some nice advantages in game and seems very fitting for her character. She's also a master of alchemy so I gave her a few mystical powers but nothing crazy. With her Ritualist, though, she could pull off something nasty in a "cutscene".

My general thought is that the icons of each of the different fighting games would be PL10, but Ivy, while well-known and an long running character in the series, I just don't see at the "top tier" level of this fighting game world I'm concocting. I might change my mind later. Also, most of the characters Story So Far will be Work in Progress as I try to string together a cohesive story arc for Earth-FG. Soul Calibur has a more unique story arc, but Tekken, Killer Instinct and Street Fighter, among others, all have a pretty similar structure of "evil corporation creates fighting tournament for nefarious purpose, good guy wins tournament, evil corporation creates another and another and so on" in their overall story. No need to have all of them so I'll try to combine.

Secret Origins: The House of Valentine was once one of the most wealthy families in London. Isabella 'Ivy' Valentine had been raised with love by her parents. However, her father, Earl Valentine, was driven insane by his pursuit for what was called the "Key to Eternal Youth." By the time of his death, his efforts to search for immortality had drained his family's fortunes and left one of London's most distinguished families in ruins. As if to pursue her husband into death, the Countess fell ill and passed away soon after Earl Valentine's death. This left Ivy as the sole surviving member of the Valentine family.

In reality, Ivy was not a true Valentine by birth. The Earl and Countess found her abandoned in front of their mansion when she was an infant, and she was taken into the family as an adopted child. Ivy discovered this secret only after reading a will left behind by the Countess in her death. But this did not matter to her, for the Valentines were the only parents she knew.

Searching through her parents' possessions, Ivy found her father's diary. In it, she discovered that the "Key to Eternal Youth" her father had been pursuing was a sword called Soul Edge. He had also been obsessed with the art of alchemy. To honor her father, Ivy chose to become an alchemist and investigate Soul Edge.

During this investigation, she uncovered the true nature of the sword–it was an evil blade that feasted on souls. Vercci, Adams, Captain Cervantes; the more she read of the fates of those who had come into contact with Soul Edge, the more she became convinced of her suspicions.

"My father was driven mad by such a loathsome thing...this evil sword!"

Filled with rage and despair, Ivy vowed to avenge the death of her father by using all of her knowledge to destroy Soul Edge. Ivy realized she needed to create a weapon powerful enough to destroy Soul Edge. Her knowledge led her to successfully create a weapon capable of shifting back and forth from a whip to a sword. This weapon was merely mechanical though, and Ivy believed the only thing which could stand against a living weapon is another living weapon. She attempted to use alchemy and her own blood to give the sword life, but all attempts were unsuccessful.

Finding her alchemic skills useless, she turned to studying ancient sorcery. Every midnight, she would attempt summoning rituals, hoping to call upon a being who would grant her sword life. With every failed attempt, Ivy became more desperate and angry.

At last, one night, a large malformed arm emerged from her summoning circle. The arm, sensing her attachment to her weapon, proceeded to touch the whip sword. Ivy heard a soundless voice seemingly coming from the arm.

"I, Cross of the Pledge, shall confer upon thee the Point in the Escutcheon of Destruction - Dexter Purpure."

The ceremony came to an end and the mysterious being vanished. Under the moonlight, Ivy's sanity began to crack. She finally had the weapon she had sought to create; a living sword which would obey her every command. Calling her weapon the 'Ivy Blade', she set out on her journey to find and destroy Soul Edge.

The Story so Far: WORK IN PROGRESS

Characterization: Ivy is considered evil by many due to her Machiavellian philosophy and her appearance. She only wanted to acquire Soul Calibur by any means to sever her bond with Soul Edge. When facing her opponents, she spites them with dramatic words and she takes advantage of her unique weapon, which she invented. Beneath her cold demeanor is a heart that wants freedom from a cursed life that will do whatever it takes to be free. Overall, she is a neutrally-aligned character.

Friends and Foes: Ivy is singular in her purpose and has made very few allies over the years. She has a great rivalry with Nightmare in her quest to destroy the Soul Edge.

I'm . . . . somewhere around "cautiously optimistic" at this point. I think DC has finally realized that their Nu-Shazam version of Cap hasn't really caught on, since the character has basically vanished from the DCU following that whole Darkseid War bit. I've read somewhere that the classic Wizard Shazam actually appeared recently in the comics, which is a good sign. I've also read a news article about the upcoming Shazam movie, talking about how Black Adam might get his own film (which I've got mixed feelings about), and they actually referred to Billy as Captain Marvel in the article.

So who knows, maybe they've learned their lesson and figured that, at worst, any confusion about the name can only work in their favor. And if they have to change his name, I'd say go with Captain Thunder. That at least fits a little better.

Anyway Thorp, really loving these fighting game builds. I have to admit to loving fighting games, crossover ones especially, and mashups like this just speak to my inner 12 year old, which is to say it just speaks to me. :D Looking forward to seeing more of this. Though I'd almost want to beg to see the MKvsDCU Capt. Marvel instead of Injustice Shazam.

Neat stuff! Always good to see some more Fighting Game-related builds, ESPECIALLY if they're stuff we haven't seen before. Soul Calibur was a fun little game, though I always found Ivy to be brutally cheap to fight against. A bit too much "Eddie Gordo" in her "random slashes that cover everything" style.

My top 4 choices:
1) Captain Marvel (screw 'em)
2) Captain Miracle (the technique used by Eclipse Comics when they reprinted the British Marvelman as Miracleman. And Marvelman came into existence because Fawcett stopped making Captain Marvel in 1953.)
3) Captain Thunder (the name used in the Whiz #1 ashcan)
4) Captain Shazam (uses the Shazam name, but still is distinctly different than the wizard's name.)

Since Theo Adam becomes Black Adam, Billy's heroic persona would of course be the Red Batson XD

Build Comments: Good old Dead or Alive. Oh, there’s a lot of fanservice in fighting games for sure, but to me, this is the creepy grandaddy of them of all. It may not really be the case, but DOA seemed to be the first developer to really focus on the most important aspect of rendering in gaming: breast physics.

And the queen of the DOA series is Kasumi. Petite yet powerful, she’s the Ryu of that series and also the poster girl for “too sexualized for a 17-year-old girl” fanservice that we get from Japan. However, as we’ve discussed, the Japanese have lower age limits for what is acceptable in those areas, so some of it you have to just accept as a cultural difference. Some of the stuff in anime, though…well, we don’t go down the rabbit hole at the moment and focus on the fighting side of things so Ares doesn’t have to make any tough calls about booting any of us.

Kasumi as a fighter is top tier for DOA, but I wouldn’t put her at the same level as characters like Liu Kang of Ryu overall. They’re just different types of games and fighters. I made her a full PL9, whereas I see Ayane and others from the series as PL8-8.5 at best, at least at the moment.

Secret Origins: Kasumi is the daughter and second child of Shiden and Ayame, and was born into the Mugen Tenshin's head family, making her second-in-line to the title of clan leader, after her older brother Hayate.

When they were children, Kasumi and Ayane - unaware that they were related - played together as best friends, although the clan saw Ayane as a "cursed child" and didn't want Kasumi to be around her. From childhood, Kasumi has lived a privileged life full of expensive clothes, servants and the respect of the rest of the Mugen Tenshin clan. According to their mother, Ayame, Kasumi and Ayane used to have fun catching fish for the family. Her relationship with Hayate was also ideal, with the two playing games and training together happily.

However, once Ayane learned of her true heritage, and the children now knew that they were siblings, Kasumi's friendship with Ayane ended due to Ayane's jealous anger over her mistreatment by the clan, centering her animosity on the "princess" Kasumi.

The Story so Far: When Kasumi was seventeen, her uncle, the rogue ninja Raidou, returned to the village to obtain the Torn Sky Blast technique; a ninpo spell used by the clan's leaders. Defeating even the prodigious Ayane, Raidou eventually manages to mimic the technique from Hayate, and rendered the boy both comatose and paraplegic before escaping. As Kasumi was not present during the attack and nobody told her what had happened, she was left clueless as to what happened until much later.

Due to Hayate's dire state and the unlikelihood of his recovery, Shiden chose Kasumi to become the clan’s eighteenth master. Her worry over her brother seemed to affect her training, but she managed to learn the Torn Sky Blast at least. Wanting to know the truth, Kasumi turned to Ayane, and believing that Kasumi will never become a great leader anyway, she tells her that Raidou was the fiend who harmed Hayate.

Now in the company of Christie and Bayman, Kasumi learned that Raidou was taking part in the Dead or Alive World Combat Championship, which was being sponsored by the Dead or Alive Tournament Executive Committee, the company they work for. They took her to the cruise liner Freedom Survivor, where the tournament would officially begin and Kasumi signed herself up.

While the start of the tournament is being officially announced, Kasumi finds Ayane in the crowd. Ayane tells her that she is there to avenge Hayate too, as well as kill her, under the orders of her foster father Genra. The girls quickly discover that Raidou is working with the head of DOATEC, Fame Douglas, but when Ayane tries to get him, even though Kasumi tries to stop her, the girl is beaten back. Fame then tells Kasumi that if she wants to face Raidou in battle, she has to come out as winner in the tournament.

Kasumi fights her way through the tournament, and does come out as the winner of the tournament, meaning that she will have to face Raidou in the Danger Zone. She manages to defeat Raidou, and was happy because she thinks she had avenged Hayate, but Raidou awakens stronger than before, with inhuman strength caused by DOATEC experiments. Their battle ends in a Torn Sky Blast duel, and with the help of Ryu Hayabusa from the sidelines, Kasumi overpowers Raidou in the end and he is finally killed.

To be continued...

Characterization/Friends and Foes: Kasumi is portrayed as a more compassionate character than many of the other fighters. She is an honorable and kind spirit, and although a highly skilled kunoichi with deadly abilities, she does not enjoy or wish to fight. Many of the statements she makes in the game series before a round begins reflect her desire to avoid confrontation. Much of the reasoning behind this comes from the fact that in all appearances in the tournaments (with the exception of the first) her motive was not to fight or win, but to meet Hayate.

Kasumi is shown to be a "soft" character; she is not afraid to speak her mind, but as a soft person, she is emotional, honest, and always helps people. She is a highly intelligent, caring and gentle person. She is demonstrably family orientated and would like nothing more than to return home in peace. There were instances where she refused to show mercy, though, such as when she willingly goes to take revenge upon Raidou and subsequently kills him in the first tournament, and fighting her clone in the second.

However, as she has aged, Kasumi's personality has changed drastically. She's still the caring person that she is, however, Kasumi is shown to be mentally stronger. She is shown to engage in battle when she needs to instead of avoiding it. An example of this is when she fights Christie, who was in her way. She also has a much stronger will as she was ready to destroy the Phase 4 project and defeat Victor Donovan at any cost. She is seen to be much happier as well and is finally at peace with both Hayate and Ayane. She also seems to have great maturity for someone her age.

Abilities 86 + Skills 23 (46 ranks) + Advantages 25 + Powers 7 + Defenses 15 = 156 / 156

Build Comments: How can you not love Chun-Li? She’s got that whole girl next door meets hot Asian chick mix that has made her extremely popular since she debuted in 1991. Even though her solo movie starring Kristin Kreuk kinda sucked, think of how few female video game characters have the cache to even get a movie and you’re talking rare air there. So of course, she has to be part of Earth-FG and the Thorpocaverse as a whole.

I thought about taking her down to PL9 but she's Chun-Li so she stays with the top tier because...she's Chun-Li. 'Nuff said. 8-)

Secret Origins: Chun-Li was an Interpol investigator who had been searching for clues to the recent disappearance of her father. Getting into a friendly spar with an old teacher of hers and friend of her father, Gen, he gives her a lead into who may have killed her father—the mysterious crime syndicate Shadaloo. Finding its leader, M. Bison, she demands he tell her what happened to her father. To her surprise, Bison attacks and basically makes quick work of her, then flies away, laughing at her and telling her if she attacks him again he will kill her just like he did her father. With tears in her eyes (the last she swore to ever shed), Chun-Li swore vengeance.

The Story so Far: Chun-Li teamed up with a United States Air Force member, Charlie Nash, to try to track and take down Shadaloo. She then ran into someone she would not have expected at all. It was Charlie's good friend and fellow lieutenant, Guile. Telling Guile he should not get in over his head and to leave the two be, Chun-Li learns he has orders to bring Charlie back. Attempting to use force to stop him, Guile immediately appears and holds her in his arms telling her that she can't force Charlie to not make what is right and for good intentions; nonetheless, she insists that she and her partner be left alone, to which Guile replies that he will never abandon friends in need. Eventually, learning that Bison tricked the Air Force into canceling the planned bombing of the main Shadaloo base, she rushed over to the two soldiers to tell them they were tricked and would have to destroy the base on their own. Chun-Li with Charlie and Guile proceeded to the Shadaloo base located in Thailand to plant bombs around the base as Charlie and Guile headed inside to destroy the Psycho Drive, but Guile then came rushing out, grabbing Chun-Li and telling her Charlie had urged both of them to get away. Meanwhile Ryu was fighting with M. Bison. Along the way Chun-Li saw a young girl escaping with several others (who turned out to be Cammy) and she found Ryu and escaped with him. Later Guile told her that Charlie was inside of the Shadaloo base during the explosion marking his apparent death in the process. Despite being distraught over the initial lack of evidence to prove Shadaloo's crimes, Chun-Li managed to shut down the operations of the Shadaloo evil empire.

Chun-Li received an invitation to the second World Warrior tournament, and discovered that Bison had apparently survived the Thailand base's destruction. With this, she had the clear motive of destroying Shadaloo and avenging her father once again. The outcome of this tournament is not clear, although regardless of the outcome, Bison himself finally falls at the hands of Ryu's nemesis, Akuma.

After retiring, Chun-Li finds life less than what she had hoped for, still feeling uneasiness. Eventually, incidents involving disappearances and abductions reach her, which rouse her fighting spirit, convincing her to return to the fight. Soon, she is tracked down by Guile, who reveals to her evidence of Shadaloo's return. She tells Guile that she is not just fighting for her father but also for herself, and that she will continue to be a cop. Donning her outfit, she returns to Interpol and teams up with Guile and Cammy to take down S.I.N. and discover what really happened to M.Bison. After she recovers from being defeated by Juri Han, she enters the new international fighting tournament to take down S.I.N once and for all. On her way, she is approached by Abel, who is searching for any leads on the Shadaloo organization. During the tournament, she also pursues Gen, who is also participating, for more answers about her father's death; Gen refuses and she is unable to force him. Later she encounters Juri once more, who she tries to arrest and although she is able to defeat her she is unable to bring her into custody. Infiltrating the S.I.N. dam facility, she is trapped when Vega activates the base's self-destruct sequence. She is protected from the ensuing collapse by Gen, and is eventually rescued by Guile and Abel.

Having made her peace, she continued her work as a police officer, and retired from mainstream street fighting to teach young children martial arts after taking down Shadaloo for good. Urien kidnapped a young girl for his scientific projects, and Chun-Li manages to catch up to him. Challenging him, she defeats Urien and reclaims the young girl. Since then, Chun-Li has continued to raise her adopted kids.

Characterization: Chun-Li's is a cheerful young lady who worships Ryu as her hero or idol, much like Sakura. Over time she became more resourceful and dedicated, with a strong sense of justice. She strongly believes in protecting the innocent, yet she has no qualms with fighting. She is a highly disciplined, seasoned, and courageous warrior, and is often the voice of reason. As a detective of Interpol, she takes her work very seriously, yet she also has an elegant, sweet, and feminine personality. When it comes to fighting, Chun-Li tends to get quite competitive with other fighters and does not take defeats kindly. But after her fights, she often becomes allies - and in some cases, friends, with her foes. Additionally, she has shown great resilience and determination in pursuing intense rivals, such as Bison and Juri.

Friends and Foes: Chun-Li is close to Ryu, Ken and Guile, as well as her adopted children and martial arts trainees.
