Abilities 70 + Skills 11 (22 ranks) + Advantages 3 + Powers 18 + Defenses 14 = 116 / 116

Build Comments: One of my favorite characters in the Dynamo 5 series, the aptly named War Chest. She started out as your run of the mill powerhouse, albeit with a fun name and great...attributes. Now she's been hired on by F.L.A.G. to be part of their superteam they have put together to be rivals to the Dynamo 5, The Primaries.

With the tongue in cheek name and looks, you would think she's pretty much a bimbo, but she's actually a pretty sharp cookie and has made it clear that she's more than just her, um, War Chest.

Secret Origins/The Story so Far: Rebecca Hurley was the girlfriend of one of the users of the Strong-Suit. She suspected him of infidelity and began pounding on him (knowing he could take it because of the suit). Dynamo 5 arrived to break up the lover’s quarrel as it was trashing the city. Gage eventually used his telepathy to help convince Rebecca that someone else had worn the suit and that he had not cheated. The pair were arrested for the damage they caused but Rebecca was given a "Get out of jail free card" in exchange for joining Primaries, a team of heroes working directly for F.L.A.G., a special government agency.

The Primaries were first deployed when the offspring of Dominex arrived to challenge the heroes that defeated their father. The offspring of Captain Dynamo, Omni Man (Invincible), along side the children of the Savage Dragon were not up to the task, nor were the Primaries themselves. Only when Smasher, whose girlfriend was critically injured by one of the attackers, donned the Strong Suit (which amplified his already considerate super strength) returned was the situation resolved (he killed all 3 alien invaders).

Gage saved Rebecca's life during the attack and the two began a clandestine sexual affair, which they managed to hide until it ended. She has recently been recruited by Cyclops for his JLAXI team.

Prejudice: The Inhumans have always been watched with a wary eye by the human world
Relationships: Her current husband, Ronan the Accuser, her daughter, Luna, her sister Medusa and the rest of the Inhuman Royal Family
Responsibility: To the Inhuman Royal Family
Weakness: The Inhumans are all vulnerable to pollutants and toxins if not given a weekly dose of serum

Abilities 56 + Skills 19 (38 ranks) + Advantages 1 + Powers 58 + Defenses 16 = 150 / 150

Build Comments: For someone that's been around as long as she has, Crystal hasn't really been that big of a player in the Marvel U. She usually just ends up as the damsel in distress for her former boyfriend Johnny Storm, her ex-husband Quicksilver or the other Inhumans. She’s occasionally gotten some decent run before as a sub in the FF, being an Avenger for a bit and of course being a leading member of the Inhuman Royal Family.

But I think that she was the biggest winner in the mediocre War of Kings crossover. I thought her turn as “the People’s Princess” as Black Bolt took over the Kree Empire was cool. The way she became the Princess Diana of the family to the Kree was a great move. And her romance with Ronan was handled wonderfully. It was great characterization for both of them, from being in an arranged marriage to truly loving each other. It's shown depth to both characters that had been lacking.

Secret Origins: Crystal was the second child born to the Inhuman nutritionists Quelin and Ambur. Her father Quelin was the brother of Rynda, wife of Agon, king of the Inhumans, and as such she was considered part of the Royal Family of Attilan. Like her older sister Medusa, Crystal was subjected to the Terrigen Mist when she was an infant, and the process endowed her with certain mental powers.

The Story so Far: While she was still a child, war erupted, forcing Crystal and her kinsmen to flee Attilan. Crystal passed through adolescence into young adulthood while wandering with her kinsmen through Asia, Europe, and finally America in search of Crystal's amnesiac sister Medusa. When they finally caught up with Medusa in New York, Medusa had sought refuge with the Fantastic Four, mistaking her kinsmen for her enemies. Crystal then met Johnny Storm of the Fantastic Four and the two began a romantic relationship that survived Crystal's return to Attilan and a lengthy separation.

Crystal eventually returned to New York and served as a substitute member of the Fantastic Four during the Invisible Girl's first pregnancy and post-childbirth. During this time Crystal performed quite admirably as Susan Storm's replacement and effectively defeated the Wizard all by herself. Crystal was forced to return to Attilan when her health became impaired by prolonged exposure to pollutants in the atmosphere. However, en route to Attilan, Crystal became a pawn in a plan by the alchemist Diablo, and then happened upon the mutant Quicksilver, who had been wounded in battle with the Sentinels.

She brought Quicksilver back to Attilan, nursed him back to health, and became romantically involved with him. The Human Torch soon learned of Crystal's change in affections, and after a futile battle with Quicksilver, terminated his relationship with her. Crystal and Quicksilver were wed shortly thereafter, theirs being the first marriage between an Inhuman and a human (albeit a human mutant) in recorded history.

Crystal and Quicksilver conceived a child, a girl bearing no apparent Inhuman or mutant characteristics, whom they named Luna after the world on which she was born. While Quicksilver wanted to exercise the father's right to have his child subjected to the Terrigen Mist, Crystal convinced him to let her grow up normal.

Eventually, Crystal and Quicksilver's marriage began to deteriorate, due to Quicksilver's temper, which may have been aggravated by the evil Inhuman, Maximus the Mad. Crystal left Quicksilver and Attilan with Luna and her nanny, Maya, and returned to the Fantastic Four. Although she searched for the relationship she once had with Johnny, he was then married with Alicia Masters (later revealed to be a Skrull agent named Lyja). Dissatisfied, Crystal briefly had an affair with another man. Crystal returned to Attilan to deal with a crisis posed by Medusa and Black Bolt's child. Amidst the troubles, she and Quicksilver reconciled.

Later, the Inhumans were attacked by the alien Brethren, and Crystal sought out the Avengers for their help. Shortly thereafter she joined them, moving into the Avengers Mansion with Luna and nanny, Marilla. During her tenure with the Avengers, she developed a crush on teammate Dane Whitman (the Black Knight,) although she soon reconciled with Quicksilver yet again. Crystal was among the Avengers who seemingly sacrificed themselves to end the menace called Onslaught. Actually transported to a different reality created by Franklin Richards, Crystal was restored when the heroes returned.

When the heroes, who were believed dead, returned to Earth, Crystal and Quicksilver were reunited. Both helped the Avenges reassemble and accepted the status of reserve members. Crystal returned to Attilan, where she remained aside the Royal Family, raising Luna. Quicksilver would return to assist the Avengers on occasional missions.

After the events of House of M, Crystal was reunited with her depowered husband, only for him to steal the Terrigen Mist from Attilan, in an attempt to use it to restore the depowered mutants. Luna is exposed also, granting her various abilities. During the events of Silent War, the Inhumans located Quicksilver. He allowed Black Bolt to beat him, in response to his betrayal. Their marriage has now been annulled.

The Inhuman royal family traveled into Kree space, seeking an alliance against the invading Skrulls. Ronan the Accuser welcomed this alliance, but only on the condition that Crystal would become his bride. Medusa agreed, much to Crystal's chagrin.

Crystal's marriage to Ronan proceeded, even following Black Bolt's decision to usurp the throne of the Kree. She came to accept the idea of the marriage, defending it to her sister-in-law Polaris as a matter of statecraft (though there are indications that Ronan wished for more). The wedding proceedings were interrupted by the Shi'ar Imperial Guard, who attacked as part of Emperor Vulcan's invasion of the Kree Imperium. Ronan was beaten nearly to death in this attack. While visiting Ronan in recuperation, Crystal inadvertently helped rally the Kree people when she showed compassion towards injured Kree commoners. Acts which (thanks to Polaris) were eventually broadcasted over the Kree networks. This led to her being referred to as the "people princess" among some of the Kree people.

Crystal was eventually separated from Ronan under the orders of Black Bolt, as part of a truce made between Black Bolt and the Supreme Intelligence to ensure peace between Inhumans and the Kree Empire before they stepped down as rulers. Crystal and Ronan were deeply saddened by this decision, as their arranged marriage had eventually become a stronger relationship based on deeper feelings of love.

Crystal was made an ambassador by her sister Queen Medusa and tasked with overseeing diplomatic relations, recovery efforts with other countries who have been or will be affected by the Terrigen Cloud.

Characterization: Crystal has a compassionate heart, but often displays a fiery temper and strength of will.

Friends and Foes: She is close to the Inhuman Royal Family, her sister Medusa in particular. She remains on good terms with former lovers The Human Torch and Quicksilver. Her time as a member of the FF and Avengers has allowed her to make many contacts across the superhero community as well.

Currently she is married to Ronan the Accuser and while initially it was mainly a political move, over time she has grown to admire Ronan’s commitment to his people and her and she has grown close to him.

Nice Crystal! I always felt it was dumb that they glossed over her and Ronan so badly. But when Hickman demanded the Inhumans back, it undid a lot of the Abnett/Lanning stuff.

Oh man, War Chest, fanservicey bad girl extraordinaire. I followed Invincible to the end of its run but in many ways I actually enjoyed its various superhero spinoffs set in the same 'verse more. It's a pity Dynamo 5 didn't get a longer run than it did, it was a really fun little comic with an interesting team dynamic. That Image superhero world is now pretty much defunct, about all that is left of it is Savage Dragon. I really should get around to finishing off building out all those characters, I've had most of them done for years but have never finished off the Guardians of the Globe and the rest of the Invincible cast.

As I noted, their relationship was the best part of War of Kings IMHO. Well, other than Vulcan dying. ;)

Hickman better not be too Hickman in taking over the X-Men or I'll give him the scowling of a lifetime.

I did a lot of them back on the ATT but I haven't gotten around to reworking them for here yet here. Dynamo 5 is one of my favorite series, actually, so I should quit putting them off and get them posted soon.

It is kind of a bummer that Faerber's and Kirkman's world building has gone by the wayside but I'm not surprised. Image is making its bones with more alternative stuff these days, and their silver age homages don't seem to fit anymore.

Relationships: She is close to her sister Sara.

Weakness: Green Lantern power rings depend on the willpower of the wearer; the maximum rank of the ring’s effects is equal to the wearer’s Will rank, and moments of self-doubt or hesitation can cause the ring to fail.

Abilities 32 + Skills 11 (22 ranks) + Advantages 8 + Powers 105 + Defenses 20 = 175 / 175

Build Comments: I like the way they’ve handled Jessica Cruz. As the Earth’s newest Green Lantern, they haven’t made things easy for her and she didn't pull off any super willpower stunts like Simon Baz did early on, at least that I’ve seen. She struggled with her confidence and was unable to make force constructs for some time, like many new GLs do.

But she came through in the clutch and was been a good foil for Simon as odd couple teammates until they got split up. And she's been getting some good run in more books now and is one of the better members of DC's Super Hero Girls, which is actually not that bad.

Secret Origins: Jessica Cruz went on a hunting trip with her friends and unfortunately came across mobsters, who were burying a body. Unwilling to have witnesses, the mobsters shot and killed Jessica's friends while Jessica herself managed to escape, but was extremely traumatized by the incident. After an aggravated assault, she locked herself in her room for 4 years. During the Crime Syndicate's rule, she was unwillingly chosen by the Ring of Volthoom, after its former bearer, Harold Jordan of Earth-T13, was killed by Sinestro. Unlike the ring's predecessors, the ring forced upon Jessica and took over her body. Under the influence of the ring, she attacked her home town and was confronted by the Justice League.

Through the intervention of Batman, Jessica was able to overcome the ring's influence when he told her that he was a victim like her and that finding strength, even at their worst moment of despair, will overcome their fears.

The Story so Far: Jessica later says that she is tired of being controlled. The Flash agrees and reveals that he has called in someone who can teach Jessica about rings and willpower. When a skeptical Jessica asks the Flash who could possible help her, Hal Jordan reveals himself and states that he has returned to Earth to teach Jessica how to stay in control.

Jessica masters the ring under Hal's tutelage though she does mention that the ring "whispers awful things to her", somehow Volthoom has been severely weakened without affecting the power of the ring. When Darkseid's daughter Grail arrives on Prime Earth, she attacks Jessica and says that the Ring of Volthoom is a tether to Earth-T13 and that its evil power would serve her well. Grail then uses the ring to open a portal to Earth-T13 allowing the Anti-Monitor to cross over to the Prime Earth.

However, during the Justice League last confrontation against Grail, Grail manages to separate Barry from the Black Racer, which immediately begins to pursue him with intentions of killing him. Knowing that the entity couldn't leave the physical plane of existence until it reaps a soul, Jessica convinces Cyborg to tap into the ring's technology and override Volthoom's control over Jessica's body for a few seconds. This allows Jessica to jump between Flash the Black Racer, allowing the incarnation of death to apparently kill her, which makes it return to his home dimension. However, it's revealed at the end that Jessica is in fact alive, and that the life taken by the Black Racer was Volthoom's, which causes the ring to crumble into dust. Immediately afterwards, a Green Lantern ring descends at the battlefield and transforms Jessica, whose courageous act proved her to be capable of overcoming great fear, into a new Green Lantern, much to everyone's surprise.

Sometime after the Darkseid War, Jessica is kicked out of her apartment. She goes to see her sister Sara at her soccer game. Sara is delighted that Jessica is finally outside of her apartment and insists that she stay with her. Jessica begins to try to explain what happened in the past few weeks, but before she can her ring alerts her of a spacecraft that had crashed on Earth. She flies off to Arizona where she encounters the Green Lantern Simon Baz. After a brief interaction, a Manhunter android emerges from the wreckage. Simon tells her to step back and let him handle it, but he is swiftly bested by the android. Jessica attempts to defeat it herself but is also quickly bested. It turned out to be a training exercise set up by Hal Jordan. Hal wished to see how Simon and Jessica would work together and was disappointed that they didn't work together at all. Simon starts to pin blame on Jessica and the two quickly get into an argument. Hal silences both of them and tells them to summon their power batteries, Jessica doesn't even know she had one, but nonetheless gives it to Hal who fused the batteries into one single battery. Hal tells them that he's not doing this to punish them, but to make them work as a team to keep Earth safe. He also tells them that as Green Lanterns of Earth, they are also members of the Justice League. He then departs to the far end of the universe to deal with Sinestro, but not before telling them that the League can help them if they need it.

Characterization: Jessica struggles with her agoraphobia on a regular basis, but has an inner strength that even she doesn’t realize she has at times. Jessica is also an adept survivalist and was able to live by herself for three years.

Friends and Foes: She is close to her sister Sara and is forming a bond of friendship with her Green Lantern partner, Simon Baz.

Relationships: She has found kinship with the other members of the Black Order.
Responsibility: To serve Rabum Alal, the great destroyer. Or Thanos. Or the Grandmaster. Or whoever she has decided to follow.

Abilities 96 + Skills 21 (42 ranks) + Advantages 7 + Powers 49 + Defenses 15 = 188 / 188

Build Comments: Black Swan first appeared during Jonathan Hickman’s Infinity series a few years back as a cryptic speaking harbinger of Incursions. She eventually became part of Thanos’ Cabal then a member of The Black Order, replacing the deceased (and underwhelming) Supergiant.

She was actually pretty decent in The Black Order limited series, getting some good one liners and showing a more consistent flying brick powerset. Overall, her powers are pretty ill defined so I just did what I’ve seen.

Secret Origins: Yabbat Ummon Tarru was a princess on Earth-T365 and became its lone survivor. When she was four years old, her earth was involved in an incursion event, where two universes are colliding with each other at the focal point of their Earths. A race of beings called Black Priests came from the parallel Earth, intent on destroying her Earth to save their own universe and killing anyone who stood in their way. She fled into the Library of Worlds, a way station of the multiverse. There she was met by three Black Swans (female beings each of a different appearance) who took her in and raised her to be a Black Swan.

The Story so Far: This new Black Swan came to Earth-T1 when it experienced its first incursion event. She was intent on destroying Earth in order to save both universes involved in the incursion. She fails and is then captured by Black Panther and imprisoned below Necropolis, The City of the Dead in Wakanda. Mister Fantastic is chosen to interrogate the Black Swan. While she seems cold and ruthless, she is seen via security camera weeping and crying out for help when sleeping. Though she is straightforward with her answers, they seem cryptic and like superstitious nonsense. She constantly warns that worse things are coming, and they need to prepare, but no matter what they do it's only delaying the inevitable because in the end everything dies. It was also revealed that Black Swan has a hatred toward Doctor Strange and magic users in general, being unwilling to tolerate Doctor Strange even talking to her, once he had told her he is a master of the mystic arts and the Sorcerer Supreme. This may be because her original Earth was destroyed by the Black Priests who appear to be magic users wearing helmets with one large eye on them, resembling the Eye of Agamotto.

She eventually agreed to help the Illuminati for a price, which is her own life, and in helping them, she helps herself for the moment. She gives them her history and the only method of permanently stopping incursions into their universe to destroy their Earth. As a sign of her good faith, she also gives them the scientific knowledge to make a device to forecast upcoming incursions, where as up until then, their technology could only detect incursions as they occur; her own such devices are implanted in her eyes. The Illuminati also reverse-engineer her anti-matter injection bomb, which they use to stop the next incursion. Black Swan is later placed in a cell where she has the Terrax of an alternate Earth as a cellmate. Both of them form an alliance where they will use each other's talents for the coming days.

During the Infinity storyline, Thanos finds the Illuminati's base. While looking for the Infinity Gems, Thanos stumbles upon the cell of Black Swan and Terrax. When both of them ask for Thanos to free them in exchange for being one of his lieutenants, Thanos declined and left. Following the defeat of both Thanos and the Builders, Terrax later pointed to Thanos' cell where Black Swan sees that Black Order member Corvus Glaive is slowly reviving.

After Namor was kicked out of the Illuminati, he released Thanos, Proxima Midnight, Corvus Glaive, Black Swan, and Terrax in order to form his incarnation of the Cabal. They made plans to do what the Illuminati didn't want to do and that was destroy the worlds that were in the incursions.

They started destroying worlds that would be a threat to their Earth during the incursions. After they were trapped on another Earth, Black Swan and the rest of the Cabal worked with Maker into making a life-raft that would save them from the final incursion where it was deployed during the fight between both its inhabitants. Following the final incursion, Black Swan and the Cabal awoke in their life-raft when it landed on the patchwork planet called Battleworld.

After God Emperor Doom's defeat and the restoration of the Multiverse, Thanos later recruited Black Swan to join his second incarnation of the Black Order.
