Nonetheless, Corax has shown his dedication to Black Sun's cause, having fought against all of the group's foes and generally places himself right in the thick of any fight unless told to do otherwise by Encomium.

Background: Susan Sullivan never had much growing up, always seemingly scraping by with the bare minimum needed to survive in modern society. Then around the time of her nineteenth birthday she manifested her Alpha abilities and along with the obvious physical alterations that caused, turning her skin unusually pale, her eyes red, and her hair white with highlights of blue, her ability to summon from her body a massive swarm of larve made her feared by most of her community.

Added to all of that, Susan needed the larve to eat as they had somehow completely replaced her digestive system so she had to use her powers several times a day. It didn't take very long for Susan to be run out of her hometown and she wandered across the state of Ohio as a homeless person until she heard one of the viral messages Black Sun periodically broadcasts to recruit more Alphas. Having nowhere else to go, she made her way to the set place at the specified time and climbed into one of Black Sun's spherical vehicles and never looked back on her old life.

The two of them quickly built a life together that allowed her to continue to follow her passion, encouraged and semi-supported by Scott.

There was one other thing that brought the pair closer - the fact that both of them were Alphas that wanted nothing to do with that chaotic way of life. After a few years the couple had a child, a little girl that brought a tremendous amount of joy to Scott and Alice.

Unfortunately, S.H.I.E.L.D. had other plans for them as the anti-Alpha group discovered the Alice's secret and took steps to remove the threat the hate group precieved her and her young family to be. When the assigned hunter team was setting up to make their move, a newer member, anxious to complete his first assignment, moved in before the rest of the team was ready. Alone and hyped up on adrenaline and nerves, the hate monger missed his intended target of Alice instead blasting her daughter instantly killing her.

What the S.H.I.E.L.D. agents had missed was the fact that Scott possessed powers of his own, which he immediately turned them loose upon the over eager killer and the rest of his team. Meanwhile Alice picked up their daughter's remains and used her powers to aid the couple in making their escape.

The pair stayed hidden until a few months later when they next appeared as part of Black Sun, somehow contacting the group and joining them during their time out of the public eye.

Weakness: Contact with acids (sulfuric, nitric, or aqua regia) painfully dissolve Quicksilver's liquid metal form into salts. He resists this with Will (rank depending on the quantity of acid), with failure leaving him Impaired, Stunned, or Paralyzed.


Background: Dorrance Moore suffered from mental health problems from a young age, requiring a long and complicated regimen of medicines to treat said issues. Of course, that came with its own set of problems; side effects which included nausea, vomiting, trouble concentrating, problems sleeping too little or too much, blurred vision, problems with coordination, difficulty thinking clearly, as well as muscle and joint pain in various combinations. Like so many others before him Dorrance struggled with staying on his medicine and suffering from the symptoms of his illness

Eventually Dorrance was treated by doctors at Odyssey Technologies where they discovered he was an Alpha who had only partially manifested his powers (turning his body into a kind of organic mercury) and that he was suffering from a unique toxic shock as his body had no immunity to the effect parts of his body's internal transformation was causing. This led to Dorrance being enrolled in the Vanguard Academy where the teachers and school doctor managed to eventually help him achieve full manifestation of his powers, which greatly reduced his health issues but he still needed to take medicines to help him handle them.

Upon his graduation Dorrance opted to live a normal life and did so for a few years without any problem until his mental health took a turn for the worse as his body adjusted to the treatments and he slowly became more and more manic until he snapped during an argument with a co-worker and attacked the other man with his powers.

When members of the Vanguard attempted to arrest Dorrance he fought them with an unexpected intensity that surprised the heroes and the young man was able to escape. From there Dorrance quickly made the news and caught the attention of Black Sun, who saw him as someone in need of their help.

This soon led to a conflict between the two organizations but Dorrance surprised the heroes by joining Black Sun and beating the heroes before leaving for Cibola. Fortunately Black Sun have been able to help Dorrance manage his problems and out of gratitude he helps them in their efforts to build an Alpha only paradise.

Background: As the Obsidian Order grew in reputation and influence in the United States, some of the activities of Gangrel gained the attention of C.A.S.T.L.E. Wanting to know more about his organization they sent in an agent to infiltrate, which is how Christopher Yontz became a member of the Order under the name of George Wright.

Due to his being extraordinarily careful in his search for answers about the enigmatic Order, Yontz spent over two years gathering intel. Then Gangrel had his revelation and all of Yontz’s plan were ruined by his being chosen to be part of the Sinistry. However, not wanting to break his cover, Yontz went along thinking that he’d wait for the right moment to make his escape.

Unfortunately for Yontz, that moment never came.

One hidden element of the rituals all the members of Sinistry were subjected to included a compulsion charm and in that moment Yontz became a 100% loyal member of not only the Obsidian Order, but the Sinistry. Now his superiors are debating if they would be able to break the hold the Order has over him as they struggle to understand the reasoning behind Sinistry’s motives now that they have lost their inside man.

Background: The phrase Alexandra Grissom recalls hearing the most from her parents is “You’re either the best or you’re nothing.”, as the former Olympic winning track athletes who became professional coaches treated their only daughter as if she were another one of their clients. No matter how well Alexandra did, what metals and awards she won, her parents always pushed her harder to be better; a win at one level only served to make her eligible to compete at the next level, and she needed to focus on that next game, or that next meet, or that next challenge. The large collection of High school medals got Alexandra a full ride to college, while medals at the college level opened up a shot at the top prize in sports: the Olympics.

However, it came to a crashing halt when Alexandra failed to earn a spot on the US Olympic track team. For the first time in her young life, she failed. She came so very close, falling short of qualifying by inches and hundredths of a second. Unfortunately, her parents viciously blamed her — after all, they never taught her how to fail, only how to win. Her failure was solely on her, not them in any way, shape or form. Alexandra found herself marginalized in her own family as they moved their attention to one of their other trainees who seemed to bound for great things. As the elder Grissoms moved on from her, Alexandra tried moving on from them.

Unfortunately, her near single-minded determination to comeback alienated her teammates and soon Alexandra gained a reputation of being “hard to work with” and her athletic opportunities quickly dwindled away following her release from the team. What came after that was a continuation of a personal downward spiral that left Alexandra addicted to opiates to handle the pain she was suffering due to over exerting herself trying to improve her physique.

This behavior continued on for a few months before the inevitable happened and Alexandra overdosed. However, instead of dying outright she manifested her Alpha abilities, stealing the bio-energy of those who were trying to help her and healing herself. To make matters worse, members of the press were on hand doing a story about the athlete's efforts to become part of the next Olympic team who instead treated to a front row seat to the birth of a new Alpha. Alexandra fled the scene, bit the damage had been done.

Within a day or two Alexandra's face was all over the various news outlets as broadcast the footage of her manifestation. Encomium immediately wanted her to be part of Black Sun and sent his agents to bring her to Cibola so he could convince her that was her best option. This, of course, led to a fight between members of Black Sun and the Vanguard, as the heroes were trying to locate Alexandra to try and help her to learn how to control her powers.

However, Alexandra's bad attitude left her uninterested in having anything to do with the heroes, and she instead accepted Black Sun's offer instead. On Cibola, it didn't take Encomium very long, or very much effort truth be told, to convince Alexandra that he and Black Sun were the best people suited to help her take what she was owed by the world and finally show her parents that she was a winner.

Background: The son of Dr. Zodiac, a criminal who started his career in the 1970s, Arthur Reynolds spent the bulk of his childhood learning the unique form of magic his father had discovered during the heydays of the 1960s. He also learned that if one had enough power they could take what they wanted and as he greatly enjoyed the childhood his father provided for him, Arthur wished to provide the same for his future children. Thus motivated, the young man buried himself within the large collection of esoteric writing his father had collected over the span of his life to learn the same “Zodiac magic” his father used to achieve his own goals. It was also during this time that Arthur began learning all he could about science of electronics.

Years later Arthur made his criminal debut as the Astronomer, threatening to kill all of the people of New York born under the zodiac sign of Virgo thanks to a device he’d build, called the Shooting Star, if his ransom demand was not met. This led to his clashing with members of the Vanguard, who managed to stop his plot by damaging the Shooting Star to the point that it self-destructed. However, while the heroes were working to contain the resulting explosion the Astronomer made his escape.

Over the following years he’s faced off against both the Vanguard and the Alliance, so much so that he is considered by both groups to be a regular opponent of their own. The fact he is supported by followers his father gathered during his active years, who now help him as much as they are able, is just another tool for the Astronomer to use in his quest for power.

Background: It’s not easy being a thug, it’s hard working for super villains; the hours are long, and the health benefits typically suck and you can forget about the money they say would be in the millions, but usually ends up being just enough to pay your rent if your lucky. Mitchell Spencer the majority of his adult life pulling various crimes, quickly realizing that superheroes made that kind of work difficult. He was tired of being a thug, he wanted to be a headliner. Thus he began saving up as much of his ill-gotten gains as he could which after several years was an impressive sum and he paid the Workshop to build him a suit of power armor that would allow him to make a serious career as a super villain.

Once Mitchell had his suit and had become comfortable using it he took a good look at the super villain scene and came to the conclusion that he'd likely do better as part of a group, and he had a good lead on which one he should join - the Royals. They'd originally been assembled by gambling themed villain Face Card, but he'd eventually leave them to return to working alone. They'd not done well in the time since; floundering without a leader and barely staying out of New Alcatraz.

It went without saying that Mitchell’s approaching the Royals in their latest hideaway and making his offer of becoming their new leader got him a less than warm reception. However, he was smart enough to make said offer a “trial run” - he would lead them on five jobs and if they didn't like the results then he and they could part ways. Seeing they had nothing to lose the Royals accepted. Thanks to Mitchell's experience planning capers he was able to coordinate the Royals in a way they'd not had since Face Card led them and they not only scored well but held their own against two teams of the Vanguard and members of the Alliance.

Impressed with Mitchell's talents, they agreed to continue the working relationship. It’s taken a few years, but now the Royals have become a respected team of criminals with a well-built support network thanks to Mitchell's underworld connections.

Kinda Old School: Jack won’t take unfair advantage of his opponents (blind siding them or hitting them when they’re down).

Background: Jack of Diamonds started off as a super crook in Texas, known as Diamondhead, who focused mostly on simple smash-jobs (as in he’d smash open the vault and take the money). He’d managed to keep himself out of jail but was thought of more as a super-mook more than anything else.

That is until a man known as the Face Card, who saw the potential that Jack held, approached him with an offer to join the group he was putting together. In the end it was Face Card’s offer of letting Jack ‘test the waters’ that sold him on the idea - if by a certain point Jack wasn’t happy with how the group was working out he could walk away without hassle and with his cut of the group’s profits he’d earned to that point.

While Jack wasn't thrilled with some of Face Card’s style of crimes, he did make get more money than he had working alone. However, the Royals success would soon fade, and Face Card would leave the group as he became unsatisfied with their efforts. Despite the loss of their leader the Royals continued on, although they lost their “elite” status amongst the super villain community and came to be considered “jobbers”.

Then came the Ace of Spades, a new super villain looking to make a name for himself and saw the Royals as his vehicle to do so. The other man’s confidence in his ability to take the group back to their former glory impressed Jack and he was the one that convinced the others to give the Ace an opportunity. Luckily for Jack his gamble paid off as the Ace lived up to his own hype, leading the Royals to success.

Now Jack is enjoying the perks of the Royals regained reputation, confident to let his actions speak for him as the group's resident powerhouse.

Background: Dean Escalon was a not so good lounge singer in a not so good casino in New Mexico when his life changed forever when he was chosen by a local cult to be a host for their patron demon. Somehow Dean managed to withstand the demon’s attempt at possession and in doing so grained the demon’s vast mystical knowledge and power. Things he immediately put to use by killing all the members of the cult.,

Dean then used his new-found powers to become a singing sensation and a media sweetheart, that is until his dark deeds were shown to the world by the students of the Vanguard Academy. Dean managed to just barely escape thanks to a couple fans he’d worked his charms on to take the blame for him. It was shortly after that incident that Dean met Face Card, who offered Dean a place in the group the villain was putting together and after his recent experience Dean didn’t take too long in accepting. For several years the Royals, as the group was named, made good money and were respected amongst their peers.

Then the Royals started to have trouble completing the jobs Face Card planned for them. They just couldn’t get things to go their way it seemed and soon Face Card grew tired of dealing with the other members and he left them to resume his solo career. Though Dean and the others they continued on together, but they’re crimes were less and less successful; they barely got the loot they tried to steal and there were several times that one or more of them almost were caught. It got to the point that they were considered by the underworld to be little more than super-powered thugs, or jobbers as the term is more commonly known amongst their peers.

Then the Ace of Spades approached the Royals with his offer of leading the group. However, the trial basis part of his offer intrigued Jack of Diamonds enough that he convinced both Dean and the Queen of Clubs to give the new villain’s offer a try. Luckily for Ace, his planning skills were up to the task and the five trial crimes he planned and led the group through all were pulled off well enough that Dean was forced to admit that the Ace was everything he’d claimed he was. Now the Royals have rebuilt themselves almost back to what they once used to be.

Self-Centered: The Queen of Clubs has suffered enough wrongs in her young life that she now only cares about herself and what she wants and is willing to cross pretty much any line to get it.

Temper: The Queen of Clubs often loses her temper over little things and goes on a rampage.


Background: Growing up wasn’t easy for Mary Mansfield, her father abused her, her mother ignored it happening, she was ridiculed and picked on by the other kids in the neighborhood and then things really went crazy. On her 13th birthday Mary’s Transhuman powers manifested – becoming able to absorb and release kinetic energy. Of course, it happened during a beating being given by her father. At first the older man was confused as Mary finally stepped up to him and confronted him about the years of abuse he’d heaped upon her; their discussion ended when Mary gave back the kinetic energy her father had supplied her with – killing him in one blow.

She then burnt the family home to cover her tracks an act which Mary then followed up with going after the kids who had taunted and teased her; many were found crippled or seriously injured though a few were murdered outright. She then went on the road, making her way across the country.

Mary was finally caught when she was 16 and put behind bars, where she ended up killing three guards and it was decided that she needed to be dealt with like other superhumans and a transfer to New Alcatraz was arranged. Mary managed to break free during the drive across the country and quickly and went into hiding popping up now and then to rob banks to support herself, causing major devastation each time. This was how Face Card heard of her and managed to track Mary down and made his offer to her and she became a member of the Royals. Though she only joined so she wouldn’t be bored all the time and because Face Card let her do as she wanted as long as she did her part on the group’s capers.

In truth it was like one big party for Mary, that is until the Royals started to have trouble completing the jobs Face Card planned for them. They just couldn’t get things to go their way it seemed and soon Face Card grew tired of dealing with the other members and he left them to resume his solo career. Though for Mary and the others they continued on together, but they’re crimes were less and less successful; they barely got the loot they tried to steal and there were several times that one or more of them almost were caught. It got to the point that they were considered by the underworld to be little more than super-powered thugs, or jobbers as the term is more commonly known amongst their peers.

Then the Ace of Spades approached the Royals with his offer of leading the group, to which Mary laughed in his face for doing. However, the trial basis part of his offer intrigued Jack of Diamonds enough that he convinced both Mary and the King of Hearts to give the new villain’s offer a try. Luckily for Ace, his planning skills were up to the task and the five trial crimes he planned and led the group through all were pulled off well enough that Mary had to admit that the Ace was everything he’d claimed he was. Now the Royals have rebuilt themselves almost back to what they once used to be, and Mary finds it much easier enough to enjoy herself during the team’s down time in between jobs with all the extra money she’s now able to spend on herself.

Motivation ~Revenge: Killjoy wants to avenge himself on the Alliance for kicking him off the team and prove that he is more powerful than any of them are.

Reputation: Killjoy is known for being a ruthless fighter who is vicious in a fight.

Weakness: Killjoy is vulnerable to psychic attacks and can suffer extra damage from such attacks (Increase DC of sucyh attacks by +5).


Background: Micky Malone grew up with plenty of attitude and a hothead reputation, getting into fights far more quickly than he could get out of them. At an early age he became determined never to be on the losing side of a fight and dedicate himself to a strict physical regimen of exercise and fight training. By the time Micky was eighteen, he was a highly skilled, self-trained martial artist that was able to handle gang bangers, goons, mob enforcers and even low-level super crooks with little trouble.

The problem was that Micky lacked the mental discipline that most martial artists develop and he soon started to abuse his abilities, running into trouble with the NYPD after hospitalizing crooks. What finally landed Micky in jail was his attack on an entire street gang, granted the Wildboyz had been menacing several neighborhoods but Micky attacked them unprovoked and he permanently disfigured two of them and left one in critical condition with doctors unsure of his recovery. Micky was arrested for aggravated assault and a few other charges, tried and sentenced to ten years in prison.

Micky’s situation caught the attention of Vega of the Alliance and he recognized the potential in the younger man if he could only get past the anger he had inside him and used his standing as a hero to offer Micky a deal; join the Alliance so that he could get better training and more importantly, proper guidance in how to be a hero and he would be considered on probation for his offense for the following five years with the stipulation that he must remain a member of the Alliance for the entire time.

Unfortunately, Micky proved to be a bad investment - he resisted any kind of formal training, resented authority and quickly began to grate on the nerves of the other members of the Alliance. What was the final straw was when Micky disobeyed direct orders during a fight against the Masters of Doom where he chased after the fleeing members. Even though he managed to capture Painkiller he was unnecessarily brutal; breaking both of the man’s arms as well as savagely beating him, but what was worse was that he failed to help the other members of the Alliance free innocent civilians who had been trapped in a burning bus during the two teams fighting. While it’s important to capture the bad guys, protecting the public is always more important and Vega knew that Micky knew that.

With disgust over Micky’s last act of cruelty, Vega booted him from the Alliance and returned the young man to prison to finish out his original sentence. An act that enraged and infuriated Micky to the point that he came up with a plan of revenge and he had soon broken out of prison and managed to make contact with Dr. Prometheus to gain the kind of power he knew he needed to properly challenge Vega and the other Alliance members (as Micky was literally “bounced off” the team by Vega personally when he tried to attack him upon being told he was off the team), despite the chances of side-effects he was warned about. When the “treatments” were over, Micky emerged a changed man; now a hulking brute of muscle, rippling with power. Unfortunately the process also drove Micky even more over the edge, as he now would fall into a homicidal fury over the least provocation.

His first attempt at striking back at the Alliance almost earned him the revenge he wanted so badly; using their habits, personalities and weaknesses as he’d learned them from working with them Killjoy, as Micky had then named himself, systematically picked off member after member until only Vega remained. Then in the hidden base Killjoy had set up, and in front of the other captured members of the Alliance he had held there following his capturing of them, the two men faced off. It was only Vega’s use of clever tactics that used Killjoy’s anger against him that allowed him to not only hold off Killjoy but trick him into freeing the other Alliance. It was then that Killjoy learned of an unknown weakness he’d acquired from his “enhancement” - an vulnerability to psychic attacks, when Sundance used her mental powers to incapacitate him. Killjoy woke up almost three whole days later, an inmate at New Alcatraz.

Over the years since Killjoy has managed to escape a number of times, sometimes on his own and others helped by those looking to strike back at the Alliance. But he still ends up eventually being returned to his customized cell at New Alcatraz where he’s subjected to a non-stop projection of alpha-wave frequencies that keep him constantly drowsy and a relaxed state that leaves Killjoy unable to focus himself enough to use his energy shaping powers or his strength to break out. Unfortunately, this is the only way the technicians have of keeping Killjoy restrained as he is oddly resistant to their usual methods and it is a somewhat fragile system; if Killjoy goes unexposed to the alpha-waves for more than fifteen minutes he will come out of his induced stupor and respond accordingly.
