Quattro:

The group known as Quattro was formed by Roland McCarthy to aid him in gaining more mystical knowledge; McCarthy had stumbled across one of magic's biggest secrets - if your family bloodline contained mages of different schools of magic then you would be able to cast spells from those schools. For years McCarthy developed skills in plant and water themed magic but was unable to gain any further diversity. Deciding to change his tactics he married a young mage, Lily Blythe, who possessed a similarly diverse bloodline in an effort to grant his future children more power than he was able to attain. He also began to build an impressive library of magical knowledge to afford his descendants the means to learn all they could.

McCarthy also became well versed in ritual casting and magical experimentation to push the boundaries of what could be done with magic, which would eventually lead to his empowering his second cousins, Jacob Black and Spencer Lowell who would become members of Quattro, with elemental powers of their own.

For years Quattro plundering historical sites, museums, also robbing private citizens of valuable artifacts and lore, all the while looking for means to increase their personal power or Roland’s magical knowledge then the Ahriman War happened; Ahriman needed several mystical artifacts for a ritual he was planning and Roland possessed a few of them. It didn’t take long for Ahriman’s followers, the Daevas, to come forcibly knocking Quattro’s door. Despite their efforts, the Daevas’ took what they’d come for left the group beaten and unconscious, a personal insult that drove Quattro to offer their aid to the growing coalition of heroes united against Ahriman. While their magical knowledge and power helped greatly in the fight against Ahriman and his followers, Quattro were among those killed by the explosive release of the built-up magical energy from Ahriman’s interrupted ritual.

Background: Lily Blythe could trace her family lineage back to Salem, Massachusetts making her a descendant of colonial witch families and thus wielded magical abilities at an early age. Her family had wisely hidden these abilities for as long as they could remember, using them in secret to help support themselves in modern society.

By the age of twenty-one Lily was a skilled practitioner of air elemental magic and was being courted by a few well-to-do young men of families with similar magical backgrounds. Among them was Roland McCarthy, a middle aged who captured Lily’s attention with his drive to push the boundaries of what was possible with magic. It didn’t take long for the two to fall in love and get married, settling into a routine that was highly comfortable for both of them – Lily working to develop her magical skills and knowledge past what she’d thought possible while Roland continued to develop new spells and rituals while building an impressive collection of magical artifacts. Things took an interesting turn when Roland’s experiments led to his empowering some of his extended family with elemental powers – something he helped them to gain mastery over and channeled their usage of those powers as part of a group he named Quattro, after convincing Lily to join them, helping him to obtain several mystical artifacts to study and experiment with.

Background: Roland McCarthy has always motivated by an need to be the first to discover what no one else has, and to be the one to decide how to use it for his own benefit. In Jacob’s case he was transformed into a man of living stone and dirt - no longer human by any means he was superhumanly strong and resistant to injury, however his earth magic had been increased to easily three times what he’d originally been able to do! It didn’t take much effort on Roland’s part to convince Jacob to use his newly gained powers to help him collect magical artifacts to be studied so that Roland could eventually find a way to help Jacob the way he helped Spencer (who is able to switch between his elemental form and his flesh and blood body.

It was something his extended family found very useful when they needed to deal with competition to the family business – they would send Spencer to burn down rival companies holdings, crippling them so the family could continue to profit. However, Spencer was not allowed much personal freedom or influence within the family due to his volatile nature, but it there was something that Roland McCarthy realized he could use in his personal circle. Soon Spencer was part of Roland’s inner circle, which included Roland’s wife, Lily, and another cousin Jacob Black.

Background: An Afrikaner of Dutch and German ancestry, Joao Michalzik found himself joining one of the many military factions that fought for control of the country's diamond mines to support himself. He distinguished himself in combat, eventually leading a squad that specialized in infiltration and eliminating assigned targets. After years of service Joao had grown tired of others profiting from his efforts and he became a mercenary.

This is what would lead him to coming to the United States when the Silvestri Family hired him to go after the masked vigilante Janus. Despite Joao' s combat skills he was defeated and put in prison. The anger over the defeat ate away at him during that time and he swore to prove he was the better fighter. Thus, began the career of the super villain Slice; while he often clashed against Janus, Slice did not limit himself to just one opponent. However, no matter what hero he took on he ended up going back to prison repeatedly.

Somewhere along the way Joao met Angela Surmava and the two became a couple. At some point Angela's hyperkinesis, which allows her to process movement at a much faster rate than others thus allowing her to perform amazing athletic feats of timing, nearly superhuman reflexes and a perfect accuracy with firearms or thrown objects, manifested and Joao wasted no time in helping her train to use it as his partner in crime as the villainess Dice.

During the course of their criminal careers the pair married and began working on building a nest egg for their eventual retirement. When Angela became pregnant with their first child, she semi-retired to care for their son (who was followed by a daughter a few years later). A few years after that the duo quietly retired from super crime to tend to their family’s needs, moving to Colorado and quietly living under assumed identities.

Then their son, Johann, demonstrated he'd gained her hyperkinesis and wanted to follow in his parent's footsteps (as they never hid their criminal lives from their children). After several years of training under his parents watchful eyes, he debuted as the solo super villain Slice N' Dice - using both his parents criminal gimmicks.

Background: A convicted serial killer serving time in prison for several murders, homicidal sadist Steven Charles Mitchell became empowered by the Breakout. He then promptly used his powers, the ability to generate energy blades anywhere across his body (that resemble chainsaw blades thanks to how they seem to move around his limbs), to cut a bloody escape route out of prison so he could continue his ‘all important work’ – proving the philosophy that life is meaningless and futile, and that spreading chaos through random acts of bloodshed is the ultimate freedom.

Considered to be among the most dangerous criminals of this time, Buzzkill (as Steven was named by the media) engages in acts of violence that most people find revolting and disturbing all at the same time. Needless to say, people either hate the man or are fascinated by him, a fact Buzzkill knows and will sometimes take advantage of to gather minions to help him on his ‘Chaos Crusades’ (which are little more than wholesale acts of mass murder).

Recently C.A.S.T.L.E. has learned that Buzzkill is trying to recruit metahumans to his side, looking for those who are mentally unstable enough to work with him and help him spread his all-important word.

Background: Tommy Davies never knew his father, but his mother worked hard to support their small family. When Tommy was a teen she was diagnosed with cancer and he began a life of petty crime to support them, which would lead to his to his arrest, the manifestation of his Alpha powers and his coming to the Vanguard Academy where he learned how to control and use his ability to manipulate kinetic energy.

During his junior year Mommy's mother died, pushing into a depression that left him struggling to graduate. He did manage to take the "final exam", where he auditioned for Vanguard membership. However, his attitude due to his depression resulted in his not being offered a place on the team. Left with no other options to earn a living, Tommy tried his hand at "normal life" working a nine to five job for minimum wage. He quickly discovered it was a life he did not enjoy, and he decided to use the skills he'd learned at the Academy to support himself - becoming a super crook that focused on simple robbery.

Now years later, Tommy is living his life very comfortably (having spent very little time in New Alcatraz for his crimes), even though he feels a twinge of guilt for going against what he was taught.

Background: One of many victims of the Ahriman Wave, Chris Rooth was transformed into a scorpion themed centaur-like creature. Despite the fact he was radically transformed physically Chris' mind hadn't been altered by the experience in a negative way.

That would change after he was medically cleared to be released - his inhuman appearance subjugated him to severe bigotry simply by walking down the street. Unfortunately, within a few days Chris was unemployed, homeless and nearly constantly harassed by others due to his inhuman features (and if the police got involved, they immediately suspected Chris of being the guilty party). His moral backside came as he needed basic needs and was forced to steal to give himself the basics a person would need. It didn't take long for Chris to become a super crook, and he soon adapted to his new life.

Now years later he wonders if he shouldn't have tried harder to get some kind of help so that he wouldn't have done the things he had to survive.

A few days later Davidson, high on his previous success, decides to rob the gate of a local hockey game only to run afoul of the heroes again (as they were the celebrity guests at the game that night) where they were better prepared for Davidson’s tricks and he was defeated. This would become a very common thing in his life – regaining his freedom, committing some crime, fighting superheroes, losing that fight, going to prison.

While at first he was regularly hired by others to do work for them, Davidson’s constant losses and imprisonments led to a steady decline of said work and he’s spent nearly a decade locked away in New Alcatraz.

Background: The Reynolds family has long held the responsibility of policing the supernatural community, however not all of them did so because of altruistic reasons. There were some who craved the power the family gathered. In the dawn of the 1900s there was a split within the Reynolds family, with the power-hungry faction being defeated and banished. Unbeknownst to the winning faction, the leader of the rouges stole part of the Obsidian Sapphire and forged it into a ring that he named the Sapphire Shadow Ring.

For several years the two families fought one another as the rouge faction sought to reclaim their “heritage”, however the good aligned Reynolds managed to maintain the status quo. Eventually the ring bearer’s health took a downward slide and his children fought over who would take possession of the Sapphire Shadow Ring, and soon the would-be inheritors thinned out the members of the family so badly that the rouge Reynolds faction was no more aside from a few members who quietly changed their names and moved on with their lives, apart from magic.

Dakota York was born without knowing any of the dark history tied to her family heritage, that is until on her twenty-first birthday when she received the Sapphire Shadow Ring thanks to a vision her great, great grandfather had experienced and set a plan into motion decades prior. Flooded with the memories of what had happened to her ancestors, Dakota happily put the Sapphire Shadow Ring on her finger and never looked back from her personal quest to retake what had been taken from her family.

That brought her into conflict with Alexis Reynolds, the current Blackstone, and the two women quickly developed an intense rivalry that continues on to the modern day. Somehow Black Sapphire, as Dakota named herself, has managed to retain not only her freedom but the Sapphire Shadow Ring and still tries to avenge herself upon her rival.

Showboat: Above everything else, Spotlight likes to put on a great show and to be viewed as the best in the biz, sometimes taking risks or revealing his end game early to that end.


Background: Lee Brooks was a lighting designer who was tired of doing all the "light" work in Hollywood while all the big shot celebrities got the spotlight shined on them. Building a special light producing suit, Lee became the costume criminal Spotlight to rob celebrities of their money using the very thing they loved most. He was defeated by Makeshift, who was working as a technical advisor to a movie being shot on the lot, but due to his mastery over his suit Lee regained his freedom while being transported to jail just a little while later after he discreetly made a few repairs.

In the years since his criminal debut, Spotlight has been defeated and sent to prison (only because his powers are technological in nature and totally dependent upon his suit), but he’s managed to regain his freedom several times thanks either to his skills or paying for someone to free him. While he is jealous of the celebrities he used to work for, Lee actually has a nearly compulsive need for attention and that is the true motive behind his crimes. Often times his crimes are a game of smoke and mirrors – with a lesser, flashier crime being done to cover his real goal.

Driven: One word to describe Slade is intense, another is obsessive. He's cut himself off from his family, old friends and co-workers to pursue his goals, there isn't much he wouldn't do to accomplish his ends.


To Protect & Serve: Slade will always put the needs of the public before his own, sometimes pushing himself to his physical breaking point to protect the people of his city. It’s because of this mentality that Slade hasn’t been out on a date or anything else that resembles a normal life since he started his war on crime.


Background: David Mann was born into a family with a tradition of service in the Chicago PD and he never once doubted he would be counted among those in his family to do his duty. He easily graduated from the academy and joined the force and worked his beat as a patrolman for a few years, earning a reputation as a harsh, honest but fair cop. But then in 2003 his powers began to emerge, allowing David to read the minds of the criminals he dealt with and soon he was able to arrest the leaders of one of the city’s most powerful drug dealers thanks to his using his powers to pick out the information he needed as he interrogated his suspects.

Then the cartel the dealer worked for set out to make an example of David, to show what happens to those who interfere in their business. A squad of hit men came after David but in the ensuring firefight his apartment building was destroyed in an explosion and he was thought to be dead. The truth is that David managed to get away just barely and he made use of his knowledge of how the cartel’s operated - where they hid their money, people they used to forge documents and fake lives for the people they employed. It was all he needed, well that and a bit of some strong arm tactics and well placed shots, and soon Lincoln Slade’s life started.

It was a life where he worked to make sure that everyday people didn’t need to be afraid of drug dealers, or the cartels they worked for, or any other criminal. Slade also started to develop his mental powers, realizing he needed an edge to stay ahead of those he was dealing with. Over the years rumors began to form about a man calling himself Eclipse that roamed the streets wielding a set of batons that could put a man down with only a few hits and leave him out for hours at a time. Slade has kept himself close to the streets as even after his rebirth, getting all the needed papers to allow him to operate as a private investigator. That way he could stay in touch with what is going on without standing out. Eclipse took his war on crime to the next level, and for years fought against the growing influence of organized crime in Chicago until he died a few years later from a brain aneurysm.

Motivation ~Justice: Vigilant is on a quest to bring justice to the world.


Background: Chandler Pierce, an industrialist who used his family’s sizeable resources to help his community, was shot in the back during a riot leaving him paralyzed from the waist down and confined to a wheelchair. Deciding to put his resources into dealing with crime he takes several discarded projects his company had worked on - a formfitting exoskeleton that enabled him to walk and also endowed him with peak levels of strength, speed and agility, and energy baton that could stun targets as well as an energy shield. He also repurposes an old lab to serve as his base of operation that housed a custom vehicle. During this time he gained the help of Tyler Bedol, a technician that was employed by one of Pierce’s companies that sympathized with his cause, who helped handle any technological issues Pierce encounter.

Armed and supported, Chandler assumed the persona of Vigilant to find justice for others. For several years he fought against a number of threats until he was drawn into the Ahriman War and helped the Vanguard fight against the freed mage that sought to take over the world. Unfortunately, Vigilant was among those killed by the Daevas, the lieutenants of Ahriman, before the final confrontation on the mage’s island. Despite the damage done to San Diego when the Ahriman War concluded Vigilant’s hidden base survived, though Bedol sealed it off in an effort to prevent the records and technology that Pierce had used from falling into the wrong hands.
