ZBURA
(Power Level 1)

Real Name: Lydia Amânar
Status: Enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 4’8” / 92 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Brown / Green
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Băile Tuşnad, Romania / April 1, 1995
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #13 (mentioned), #14 (full)
Tags: #neosapien, #nvae, #oubliette137, #romania

Physical Description: Lydia is short and skinny, with shoulder-length brown hair, a freckle-speckled face, and a strong jaw. Before her powers manifested, she wore simple blouses and skirts. Fearing that she could drift up at a moment’s notice, she began wearing tights under her skirt.

Relationships: Razvan Amânar (father), Doina Amânar (mother), Alina Amânar (older sister; deceased), Madeline Amânar (older sister; deceased), Stela Amânar (younger sister), Monica Amânar (younger sister), Lumința Amânar (younger sister)

Biography: Lydia always knew that she may one day manifest the same Neo-Sapien power her mother and sister possessed. She just never imagined that when her powers manifested, she wouldn’t be able to control them.

The victim of a villain the Vindicators christened “Voleur”, Lydia’s power of wingless-flight manifested the moment the Frenchman brushed against her. Voleur’s power allowed him to locate and find Neo-Sapiens, cause their powers to go haywire, and use their powers for however long they could not control them. Lydia manifested her ability to fly, and immediately began floating skyward.

It was only with the arrival of Quintessence and four New Vindicators—Fluxx, Impasse, Sprite, and Ursa—that she was saved from drifting into the heavens. Thanks to some lead shoes fabricated by Fluxx, Lydia and her sisters were prevented from drifting away. (NVAE #14)

Ultimately, a cadre of New Vindicators encountered Durendal--the French champion they knew as Voleur--and compelled the woman to relinquish the powers she had stolen, allowing Lydia and her sisters (among others) to control their abilities once again. (NVAE #18)

As a new semester began, Lydia officially enrolled as a student of the New Vindicators Academy of Europe. (NVAE #26)

THE DRIFTER
(Power Level 8)

Real Name: Elizabeth Lamperouge
Status: Yes
Height / Weight: 5’8” / 126 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Black / Blue
Place of Birth: Albany, New York, United States / August 14, 1996
Home Dimension: Oubliette-138
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #13
Tags: #doppelganger, #neosapien, #oubliette138, #unitedstates

Physical Description: Varies; when the New Vindicators first encountered the Drifter, she was 18-years-old. Tall, and svelte, the Drifter has long, raven hair that she typically keeps back in a ponytail. Though her wardrobe varies, she is fond of neutral colors and seldom seen without her leather jacket and boots.

Relationships: Charles Lamperouge (father), Tabitha Lamperouge (mother), Jason Lamperouge (older brother), Jack Rexroth (best-friend), Ellen Woolf (best-friend), Harry Percy (ex-boyfriend)

Biography: Little about the Drifter’s life before she obtained the Astrolabe is known. Due to her ability to travel backwards and forwards through time, the New Vindicators’ encounters with her are not chronological to her; indeed, the first time they encountered this version of Elizabeth Lamperouge, she seemed to have already had met them.

Asking for Kas’ help in stopping a war, the Drifter proceeded to bring Jack, Harry, Astrid, and Gaspar to Oubliette-1127—a world where Archduke Franz Ferdinand was saved by a Nephilim who went on to marry the man’s daughter, Princess Sophie. This led to a world where the Great War never took place, imperialism never fell, and the strength of noble house was measured by how many different power sets were bred into the bloodline.

THERIANTHROPE
(Power Level 10)

Real Name: Dale Rexroth
Status: Deceased (NVAE #23)
Hair / Eyes: Black / Brown
Height / Weight: 6’4” / 182 lbs.
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Dayton, Ohio, United States / March 9, 1970 – Unknown (Aged 39)
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #3
Tags: #armada, #laputa, #neosapien, #oubliette137, #unitedstates

Physical Description: Dale Rexroth appears as a very physical fit man in his late 30's; he keeps his head shaven in a perpetual buzzcut and wears a goatee. The man sports a few tattoos: his first wife and son's names are inked over his heart; the words "Never Forget" followed by the dates February 16, 2007 and September 27, 2008 underneath are etched on the inside of his left arm; a nine-headed hyrda is depicted on his right arm, with the heads wrapping around the limb, dominating the appendage. On his back is his newest tattoo: a chess piece--a black king--which extends over most of his spine.

Relationships: Jack Rexroth / Greystone (son), Tabitha Lamperogue / Erudite (second wife; deceased), Jason Lamperogue / Prodigy (step-son), Elizabeth Lamperogue / Lacuna (step-daughter), Herta Elade / Tantivy (pawn)

Biography: Once upon a time, Dale Rexroth had lived a normal life. He was a Neo-Sapien—an aspect he had inherited from his father—but managed to keep such a truth hidden from his wife and son. He had no ambitions of using his ability to shift his form—adding pieces to his body—to make the world a better place or to take what he wanted. Dale was a man who believed in hard work: blood, sweat and tears were the best path to happiness. Besides, with his wife and his son at his side, he had everything he could ever want and need.

Everything changed the day of the car crash though. Dale was still at work—still at the distribution warehouse where he was employed as a maintenance man—when he got the word that his wife and son had been involved in an accident.

In the days after he put his wife in the ground, depression set in and Dale turned to drinking as a way of dealing with everything. He knew why his son had survived—he knew it was the Neo-Sapien powers he had passed onto Jack that had saved him… but Dale lamented that nothing could have been done to spare the love of his life.

In his rage, he struck his son. For a year, Jack endured his father’s abuse and kept his abilities dormant. One day though, he had had enough. His father’s rage took over and then Jack’s own rage came through: he manifested claws on his hands and fought back, coming to his senses moments before he nearly killed the man. Jack called 9-1-1 and left Dale bleeding on the floor of their home…

It is unknown what became of Dale after that night—only that he survived, met and married Tabitha Lamperogue and joined his bride in her crusade against the oppression humanity reserved for their kind.

The New Vindicators first learned of Dale Rexroth’s position within Laputa in the wake of their adventure in Kaiserslautern: while they dealt with Confectionery and Basilisk, the American laid siege to Ramstein Air Force Base, proving that the attack on the town hall was little more than misdirection. (NVAE #2)

Not long after witnessing the terrifying video of one man making short work of an entire air force base, Therianthrope descended from the skies to assault Sidra, in pursuit of the escaping Basilisk. With one swipe of his claws, Therianthrope ended the girl’s life, earning him even more hatred from the young heroes. (NVAE #4)

It was some time later that he was sent after Vestige and her parents. Along with his pawn, Tantivy, Therianthrope attacked the Liechtenstein, only to be bested by a contingent of New Vindicators consisting of Impasse, Magnitude, Prodigy and Ursa were joined by two of their classmates: Current, Sidra’s boyfriend, and Greystone, Therianthrope’s son.

Ultimately, Current elected to evacuate the injured with the help of Magnitude and Impasse—though not before Magnitude could bind Therianthrope in a shell of dust that stripped him of his movement.

While Prodigy worked to demoralize the man, Greystone and Ursa fought him and finally subdued the man before he was taken away by Crusader for an unknown location. (NVAE #7)

Laputa located Therianthrope and freed him. When they launched their final attack on the New Vindicators Academy, Therianthrope encountered his son. A brawl began, but the two soon struck a truce, with the elder Rexroth turning on Laputa in an effort to save his wife. Lacuna’s seed took hold and the battle continued—ending with the arrival of Iconoclast, who offered to telekinetically hold the possessed man while Greystone dealt with the controller.

When the battle was over, Iconoclast towed Therianthrope’s body from the island, relinquishing him to the school, where he was turned over to the World Court. (NVAE #10)

At some point, Lacuna abandoned her hold over Therianthrope and the man was sentenced to life on Pandora, along with several other members of Laputa: Erudite, Confectionery, Vociferant, and Basilisk. There, he was reunited with his son, only to learn that months had passed for the youth since Laputa’s downfall. When Argus arrives to recruit the inmates into the Armada, Greystone explains to his father, step-mother, and Confectionery what the Elpis does to worlds it leaves. Together, the four plot a rebellion to bring down the Armada and protect their home dimension. When their plot is uncovered, Therianthrope was executed. (NVAE #22 - 23)

Michuru wrote:With his run done, here be Therianthrope.

My primary goal for the first arc of the NVAE game was to utilize the parents of the PCs more than I had in the tabletop game. While the majority of them ended up as villains, others became halfway decent people. Dale was one that I wanted to have be both. I like villains with redemption stories. Tattooedman gave me a great opening with a father who turned to booze following the death of his wife. When Jack runs away from home, his father is an alcoholic and abusive. He's lost his wife and son. He has hit rock bottom. Then, along comes Tabitha and she helps him turn it around. Then something threatens to take away this new source of happiness, and he's desperate to protect it at all costs. Even if that means becoming a terrorist who kills kids. At this point, Dale is weak. He's terrified of going back to his low-point, and basically allows himself to be turned into a monster, just to avoid having to mourn again.

As far as the build, it should be fairly straight forward: Dale adds features to augment whatever situation arises. Most of the time, he'll adopt his dragon form, finding it best suited for combat, but he has virtually unlimited options.

TORO
(Power Level 8)

Real Name: Hercules Rodriguez
Status: Employed as a custodian at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 6’2” / 224 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Black / Brown
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Oviedo, Asturias, Spain / July 7, 1988
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators #13
Tags: #neosapien, #nvae, #oubliette137, #spain

Physical Appearance: As one might expect from his namesake, Hercules is a tall, muscular man—even before his Neo-Sapien powers activate. His head is normally kept shaven to a dark, black stubble.

Tattooed on his right arm, the words “luctor et emerge” (“Struggle and emerge”) form a ring around a sun burst.

Relationships: Leocadio Rodriguez (father; deceased), Edmund Cortez / Indalo (teammate), Jesus Manuel / Tartessos (teammate), Mary Roberts / Delores (teammate)

Biography: For as long as he could remember, Hercules dreamed of being like his father: Leocadio Rodriguez was a hard worker who strove to do right by his family. The man worked all hours of the day to provide for his wife and their five children. He never cursed or swore and embodied what it was to be a good Catholic.

The man also possessed a secret: he was a Neo-Sapien who had inherited the power to transform into an anthropomorphic bull from his father.

While Hercules lacked his father’s wisdom and fix-it-man know-how, he more than made up for it with a determination to work hard and do whatever it took to get a job done. Still, that ethic hardly stilled the tongues of his peers—boys who mercilessly taunted Hercules for his doltishness.

When he was fifteen, Hercules had been held back in school. While he wanted to simply drop out and get a job, his father reminded him that it was not in him to give up. The boy pushed on and his new classmates mocked him.

Fed up with their jeers, Hercules attacked them. Their numbers made up the handicap his size and strength gave him and Hercules went down. It was then that his Neo-Sapien powers manifested—the only one of his siblings to display such an ability.

The sight of him in his transformed state sent the other boys running. They told their teacher how Hercules had attacked them and at the sight of him, the local authorities were summoned.

The incident put Hercules on the radar of the New Vindicators Academy of Europe. Though he did not want to leave his family, his father insisted that it was the path to a better life and insisted he accept the school’s invitation. Though he returned frequently, during his senior year he headed home without the joy he had every other time: he returned home to bury his father—whose heart had simply given out.

With his elder siblings moving on with their lives, Hercules returned to the school and elected to stay on after graduation, insisting that no matter how menial the job he was given, he would do it with the same spirit his father did.

NEW VINDICATORS: sic simper tyrannis—In the summer of 2007, Hercules was picked by one of his classmates—Tartessos—to join a team consisting of Spaniards during the Trials. Under Tartessos’ guidance, the group was able to make it to the Fourth Trial, where they were eliminated following a battle with the Rhino and Rush—a battle that was broken up by Ark.

In a fight, he might get a punch or two in but he's going to be too much of a challenge to anyone with any versatility. Then again, given that he's been handed the janitorial chores at the NVAE, he shouldn't be too effective of a problem solver or the PCs would never really get to see any action.

On the other side, his presence as the school's janitor has to make one wonder what happened to whoever filled the position from 2002-2007--but that could be said for a lot of the positions at the NVAE...

LIBRA
(Power Level 12)

Real Name: Unknown
Status: Dead, but spirit resides in an artifact
Aliases: Bob Atalata
Height / Weight: 5’10” / 162 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Brown / Green
Place of Birth: Hyperborea, Mu
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators #66
Tags: #aeolian, #areopagus

Biography: Before the fall of Mu, Libra was one of the Areopagus—the twelve magi who advised the Aeolians. When the continent was facing destruction at the hands of a possessed Odin, Libra advised Aeolus and Eos to flee to the Astral Plane. Effectively condemning them to a lifetime imprisoned there, Libra led his fellow mages in the creation of a suit of armor that would bestow the wearer with magical abilities. Each piece of the armor also contained the soul of one of the mages, with Libra putting his essence into a pair of rings. If someone Libra does not deem worthy wears those rings, he is able to take over their body, granting him a small form of immortality.

NEW VINDICATORS: beatae memoriae—Libra first appeared in Japan where he bestowed three pieces of the Areopagus armor to Deimos: Capricorn, Gemini and Scorpio. He accompanied Deimos to New York and while Deimos took on the Vindicators, Libra challenged Jetstream. Ultimately, Jetstream lost the will to go on and allowed Libra to kill her.

NEW VINDICATORS: dulcis amor—Libra next appeared before Mithril. He explained that he was drawn towards those whose hearts were unbalanced and told the heroes of Jetstream’s death. Offering Mithril the same ending, all present were surprised when Melody accepted his challenge on Mithril’s behalf.

Rumble discovered a way to enter Libra’s barrier with the Aurelia’s help and the two attempted to save Melody. Ultimately, Libra killed both Melody and Rumble and when the barrier broke he declined any further challenges as he had been injured. When pressed for a battle, Libra displayed a startling prowess for arcana that intimidated the Vindicators and allowed him to leave once more…

NEW VINDICATORS: felo de se—Libra was content to stand by and watch as Deimos took on his twin brother but when Phobos realized he was about to be finished he drew one of Libra’s swords to deny Deimos the kill. Ultimately, Libra came out on top and Phobos’ blood was now on his hands.

NEW VINDICATORS: contratia contrariis curantur—Drawn towards those whose hearts are confused and unbalanced, Libra next appeared before Quinton Jorgenson. Viewing his challenge as a release from his punishment, Quinton moved to accept, only to have Boson draw the sword instead. As she began to engage Libra in battle, her body was deconstructed and replaced with Quintessence.

Quintessence continued the battle in Boson’s place and as Libra moved to deliver the killing blow, his dark side emerged. Quintessence transformed into Paragon and the deceased Nephilim continued the battle with the Areopagus. Still, it wasn’t enough to bring the heroes victory and Libra claimed another victim, ending Paragon’s life (again) and Quintessence’s in the process.

NEW VINDICATORS: sanguis ac ferroque—Shortly after the Basileus arrived on Earth, Coldfire made his move and attacked the would-be king. Libra moved to join his emperor in battle and Deimos stood in his way. Asking him how two-against-one was balanced, Deimos took one of Libra’s swords and moved to take revenge for Libra’s stealing the joy of killing Phobos. Ultimately, Deimos slew Libra and took up his artifacts.

Once the wall goes up, it's practically indestructible--breaking only when one of the two people inside dies. So long as the challenge is on going, Libra allows the wearer to copy their opponent's powers.

Next is the form Libra assumed through most of the story: Bob Atalata (both names are palindromes, thus they are perfectly balanced, because I'm a dork)...

The heroes should have just waited until his back was turned and stabbed him--coulda saved a whole lotta lives... In an actual fight, Libra should be roughly as tough as his opponent is. Against Bulwark? He'd get some Impervious Protection to shield him from attack. Against Boson, he'd have a Force Field. Against Sclera, he'd probably be a bit screwed... Still, he's not meant to be entirely self-reliant: he should make the most out of what his opponent can do.

In this form Libra loses his Immunity to Fortitude effects, as he's a person and not a ghost possessing a pair of rings. Self-explanatory.

Libra only pulled out his magic in the fight against Deimos, where he said he was capable of doing anything the other Areopagus can do. Rather than complicate his stats more than they already are, most of these are best used as power stunts.

THE WEAVER
(Power Level 10)

Real Name: Nick Bottom
Status: Faculty member at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Aliases: John Cooper, Henry Condell, ect.
Height / Weight: 5’10” / 154 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Brown / Green
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Shottery, Warwickshire, England / April 1, 1555
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: Illuminati #4
Tags: #faculty, #illuminati, #nvae, #unitedkingdom

Physical Appearance: Nick Bottom appears to be a man in his mid-30’s with long, brown hair and just the right amount of stubble. As far as his wardrobe is concerned, Bottom has not quite escaped the grunge look that permeated the 1990’s: he wears flannel shirts over T-shirts that advertise bands no longer recording, ratty jeans, and mid-calf boots.

Relationships:
Biography: In the summer of 1590, Nick Bottom had the night of his life… Caught up in a war between extra-dimensional immortals, Bottom was magically compelled to spent a night in the loving arms of Titania, Queen of the Fey (albeit transfigured into an anthropomorphic donkey). When morning came, he woke to find no evidence of their tryst. Believing it all to be a dream, the weaver told one of his playwright friends everything he could remember.

Unbeknownst to Bottom, he had been transformed by the experience. From that day forward, the man ceased to age. Further, he found he retained a fraction of the unnatural allure that had allowed a donkey to bed a queen.

Through the ages, Nick Bottom has achieved renown under several pseudonyms.

ILLUMINATI: The Circle Chase—Sometime in the 1970’s, the Illuminati’s numbers had dwindled. With the bulk of their artifacts entrusted to the Aurelius, the remaining members divided the shards of the Sephirot up, in an effort to protect humanity from the threat the rune posed.

When one of their own designed to assemble the Sephirot, Bottom selected a Joseph Higgins to safeguard his part of the relic, thus freeing him of his burden and affiliation with the organization.

NVAE: quaere verum—Though Isaac Newton stepped down as the headmaster of the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, he did not leave it without his protection. He charged several of his allies with watching over the school and certain individuals he knew would be instrumental to fighting Laputa.

Amongst these agents Newton deployed was Nick Bottom, the Weaver. Nick slipped into the school and planted himself as the institute’s new performing arts teacher—all without the knowledge of the institute’s headmistress. Nick had been told by the former headmaster that there were two students Newton trusted implicitly. Believing this to mean the two prefects the man had chosen, Nick moved to work to steer Lex Murphy and Martin Curie along in the battle against Laputa.

It was thanks to his help that Martin was able to prove Captain Ronald Nelson’s involvement with the group, but his crypt ways won him no favor in Lex’s eyes. The two clashed—violently—and Bottom was forced to reveal his purpose to the American.

NVAE: sanguine bellum—In the wake of Laputa’s downfall, Bottom remained with the school—now with the administration’s blessing. The man now teaches music, theatre, and related classes.

TALLEMAJA
(Power Level ?)

Real Name: Unrevealed
Status: In-hiding
Aliases: Mary Ljungdahl / Glamour
Height / Weight: Varies (Typically 5'8" / 120 lbs.)
Hair / Eyes: Varies (Typically Blonde / Blue)
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Unrevealed (formerly believed to be Skellefteå, Sweden / April 9, 1991)
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #8
Tags: #laputa, #magus, #neosapien, #nvae

Physical Description: It is presently unknown what Tallemaja normally looks like, given her abilities.

Relationships: Ingvar Ljungdahl (fake-father), Jannick Salchow (fake-mother), Beda Ljungdahl (fake-paternal grandmother), Swietopolk Ljungdahl (fake-paternal uncle), Martin Curie (ex-boyfriend), Elle Curie (friend), Dag Schenkenberg (ex-boyfriend), Herta Radikovich (friend)

Biography: Little is known about Tallemaja's real past, other than that she once infiltrated the Faustian Society on Erudite's orders. After learning enchantment magic from Chuck Faust, Tallemaja stole a canister from him. She then moved to infiltrate the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, using mind-influencing magic to create a scenario where a team of New Vindicators (Gae'bolg, Pachyderm, Prodigy, Sprite, and Ursa) were forced to rescue her from a father seeking to use her abilities--then assumed to be nothing more than the power to alter her appearance--for ill-gain.

After rescuing her, she became close with Martin Curie for a brief period. After their relationship ended, she remained close with his sister, Elle, another new arrival at the school.

As Laputa initiated their final attack on the school, Tallemaja disabled Sublime and took her place aboard the plane--even going so far as to carry explosives aboard in an effort to prevent the heroes from making it to the island. Once there, she fought Greystone, but when he managed to temporarily blind her, she opted to retreat.

She then helped a Lacuna-possessed Parabola return to the school. Parabola was bested by Lullaby, and Tallemaja returned to her disguise as Mary. (NVAE #10)

In the wake of Laputa’s defeat, the shapeshifter began dating Dag Schenkenberg. Their relationship experienced a slight hiccup when he became the victim of Venefica’s powers. After the revelation that he was not in control of himself, he and Mary resumed their relationship.

Following the arrival of the underage members of Laputa on campus, Mary took to defending them from the other students, even going so far as to become a friend and confidant to Herta.

As Siegfried attacked the city, Tallemaja went to Vestige and shapeshifted her hand to gain razor-sharp claws. Eviscerating the French teen acted as the catalyst to open the canister: dying, Beatrice needed the Golden Apple contained within. Before she could eat it, however, Greystone and the Blue Knight arrived on the scene. A scuffle began and Greystone, knowing about the apples from another world's Bulwark, devoured it instead.

Her disguise ruined, Tallemaja and a Lacuna-possessed Fraction managed to deter Siegfried's plans. (NVAE #17)

Sometime later, Fluxx and Current found themselves trying to save Spirte from MI18, only to discover that Tallemaja had now infiltrated their ranks, in an effort to disrupt an auction for a super-powered weapon by taking on the identity of the auctioneer, Yifan Zhang. (NVAE #19) The weapon was Xing Tian, an ancient, headless warrior desired by several parties--the Faustian Society and the Avalon Academy for Young Ladies included. Working with Agent Dewhurst, Current and Fluxx journeyed to Fuya Temple on Mount Putuo. There, caught between two other enemy forces, Fluxx opted to help Tallemaja escape the firefight. (NVAE #20)

Relationships: James Poundstone (father), Nabila Poundstone (mother), Assia Sahraoui (maternal aunt, deceased), Hassan Sahraoui (cousin), Antar Sahraoui (cousin)

Biography: Born a Sunni Muslim, Mouloud grew up believing that there would come a day when he was welcomed into paradise and attained a closeness with Allah. As he grew older, however, the avid reader learned about the sufi—a group of Muslim who strive to draw even more closer to their God and fully embrace all that Allah is in this life.

Believing that he was born with a tawhid—an inborn sense of oneness—Mouloud strove to return to a pure state embodied by Abraham and Muhammad; Mouloud saught to resurrect his fitrah through complete and total pacifism.

NVAE: queare verum—Motivated entirely by a love of God, Mouloud refused to use his uncanny strength to defend himself when his cousin, Antar Sahraoui, selected him to be a candidate for the shadier dealings of the Islamic Relief Foundation…

Antar and his brother Hassan both had roles in the group which was nothing more than a front for a terrorist organization operated by Jihad, the Neo-Sapien who orchestrated the 9/11 attacks.

When his mother contacted the New Vindicators Academy for help, Quintessence arrived along with four students: Current, Greystone, Impasse, and Sublime. Their investigation led them to the Islamic Relief Foundation, a front for Al-Akhwan. Inside, they discovered a lab researching the ability to bestow normal humans with simulacrums of a Neo-Sapien’s ability. Together, the young heroes destroyed the facility, and rescued Mouloud.

Fearing retribution from Al-Akhwan, Mouloud and his mother were taken to the Vienna school, where Mouloud enrolled as a student and his mother found employment.

LIONESS
(Power Level 10)

Real Name: Elena Rauf (neé Vogel)
Status: Deceased; killed by Lluvia on Laputa (NVAE #10)
Height / Weight: 5’8” / 130 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Strawberry-blonde / Green
Place of Birth: Aberdeen, Scotland / July 18, 1969
Place of Death / Date of Death: Vienna, Austria / October 24, 2008
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #6

Relationships: Richard Vogel / Lionheart (father; deceased), Richard Vogel II / Lionheart II (brother), Edward Vogel / Tsabo (brother), Tevfik Rauf / Zehirli (husband; deceased), Lexus Rauf / Manticore (son)

Biography: On September 12, 1980, General Evren led a military coup against the Turkish government. Over the course of the next three years, military rule was phased out, as the government was given back to the civilians. With the turning of the 1990’s, political unrest returned to Turkey, and Elena Rauf was dispatched to cover the situation.

Though her father had devoted his life to using his powers for the good of the world, Elena Vogel had no such ambitions. In lieu of using her ability to transform into an anthropomorphic lion to fight crime in the United Kingdom, Elena elected to study photography at Gray’s School of Art at Robert Gordon University, becoming a photojournalist after graduation.

Employed by the British Journal of Photography, Elena was sent to cover the story unfolding in Turkey, and it was there that she met a soldier. She would later tell friends and family that she took his picture, but he took her heart.

Not long after, Tevfik and Elena were married and welcomed their only child into the world: Lexus.

NVAE—quaere verum: With Lexus inheriting both of his parents’ abilities, Elena sent her son to Austria, where her father had been named headmaster of a school for Neo-Sapiens. Before his first year could come to a close, however, Lexus was expelled by his grandfather, after his romantic relationship with a male classmate was discovered.

Elena challenged her father’s decision, pointing out that he wouldn’t have expelled Lexus for having a relationship with a girl. Elena attacked her father for “acting as much of a bigot as the people who oppose Neo-Sapiens are.”

Shortly thereafter, news came across the Atlantic: a Vindicator had used his powers to assassinate a presidential candidate who was outspoken in her detestation of Neo-Sapiens. A fever swept across the States, resulting in rumors of concentration camps and forced sterilizations.

Ever the activists, the Raufs drew the attention of an American Neo-Sapien: Tabitha Lamperouge, who offered Elena a chance to finally do something good with her powers…

The Raufs—Tevfik, Elena, and Lexus all—were drafted into Laputa, an organization seemingly devoted to doing just what General Evren had done decades before: wresting command away from a corrupt government and giving it to the people it oppressed.

Laputa’s plans culminated with their arrival in Vienna—actions that prompted the Vindicators and the New Vindicators to invade Laputa’s flying island fortress.

Elena located two of the young heroes: Warder and Fach. Though the Swede had died in the crash, the German girl was still conscious. Elena moved to restrain her, only for Fach to fight back with her sonic scream. Realizing the easiest way to disable her, Elena transformed and sank her teeth into the girl’s throat.

It was then that two other students of the school her father had once administered arrived: Ursa and Eiron.

While Eiron fought to keep Fach from bleeding out, Ursa fought to subdue the beastly woman. As the more savage of fighters in their respective camps, the two were evenly matched; however, Ursa began to waver.

It was then that another New Vindicator arrived: Lluvia, Fach’s ex-boyfriend. Upon seeing the girl he still harbored feelings for lying half-dead, Lluvia went wild, conjuring a storm cloud and raining a bolt of lightning down for the Scottish woman. In an instant, Lluvia’s rage had claimed Elena Vogel’s life.

Was there something in the infernal blood that affected fertility? I think the Manther family shoots that theory down. So, in an attempt to sort of expand on their families, Tevfik gets a brother and Elena gets two brothers--brothers who might as well carry on the family legacy. Plus, it helps to flesh out England's superheroes. With Arthur Eld and I hammering out some ideas on villains to fluff Paladin and Blue Knight's rogue's gallery, the United Kingdom is slowly becoming a hotbed of evil activity--maybe there's justification in creating a British team of supers who serve the crown, rather than the UN, as the Vindicators do? Time will tell.

ZEHIRLI
(Power Level 10)

Real Name: Tevfik Rauf
Status: Deceased; killed by Lluvia (NVAE #25)
Height / Weight: 5’10” / 180 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Black / Green
Place of Birth: Mersin, Turkey / July 14, 1969
Place of Death / Date of Death: Sao Paolo, Brazil / August 20, 2018 (41-years-old at the time of death)
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #6

Physical Description: Tevfik is a man of average height whose frame is covered in toned muscle. His dark hair is worn in a buzz cut and he sports a thick mustache.

Relationships: Elena Rauf / Lioness (wife; deceased), Mustafa Rauf (brother), Lexus Rauf / Manticore (son)

Biography: In 1922, Larsa Eshoo said goodbye to her family for the last time. The fourteen-year-old girl was an Assyrian, who called the Ottoman Empire her home. While her parents’ and siblings’ lives were claimed by the Sayfo, Larsa was saved by an older boy, who had golden flames that burned in skull where his eyes should have been.

The Kurdish Serkewt kept Larsa safe by having her pose as his bride. As time marched on, they found that they were no longer playing at being in love, but truly were. They welcomed their first child into the world: a girl they named Ajna.

Though Ajna never inherited her father’s ability to conjure yellow, heatless flames, she did have his bizarre ability to summon poisoned quills along her skin. It was an ability her parents insisted she keep hidden, fearing Ajna or her siblings might spark another culling.

Ajna eventually married and gave birth to children, who married and started families of their own. As generations passed, Serkewt’s power passed, as did the tale of the horrors Larsa survived.

Tevfik Rauf grew up knowing the depths man’s hatred could sink to. Believing in fighting to better the world, he joined the Turkish Armed Forces. As his homeland transitioned into a turbulent time, he met a journalist from the United Kingdom—Elena Vogel—and fell in love.

The two married and welcomed a son into the world: Lexus.

For years, the Raufs lived peacefully in Turkey. All that changed on November 15, 2003, when agents of Al-Akhwan bombed Istanbul. Sent to Istanbul to help in the aftermath, Tevfik Rauf spotted one of Jiahd’s duplicates and realized another attack was about to follow. In the ensuing melee, Tevfik used his powers, and as a result was discharged from the TAF.

NVAE—quaere verum: Years later, in 2008, the Raufs began hearing reports of injustices happening overseas. His great-grandmother’s experiences with the Sayfo, his expulsion from the TAF, and the prejudice his son was shown due to his homosexuality led Tevfik to pledge himself to Laputa, an organization that spoke of a better tomorrow.

During the Vindicators’ and the New Vindicators’ invasion of Laputa’s base of operations, Tevfik found himself facing off against Fey. The diminutive Irish girl’s arcane talents got the better of him, removing him from the fight, and bringing him to justice. (NVAE #10)

Sentenced to life on Pandora, Tevfik was drafted into the Armada and set about traversing the multiverse. After eighteen months aboard the Elpis, Tevfik returned to his home dimension. Tasked with repelling the New Vindicators who invaded the ship, Tevfik spotted Lluvia--the young man who had claimed his wife's life. Enraged, Tevfik charged the Spaniard, tackling him into a ship and jettisoning them to the surface of the planet. Sure, Marvel has "Venom" and "Toxin", but "Poison" just sounds stupid. Yet, as "zehirli" is the Turkish word for "poison", that's essentially what Tevfik here has done: he has named himself "Poison". Now, maybe it would work if he was a girl and had a certain Bell Biv DeVoe song cue up whenever he walked into a room, but here... it's not... and I'm just drawing attention to how utterly lazy I am.

#336: Jakob Schwarz

Post by Michuru »

JAKOB SCHWARZ
(Power Level 0)

Real Name: Lukas Jakob Schwarz
Status: Alive; living as a student in Vienna
Height / Weight: 5’9” / 129 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Black / Brown
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: Vienna, Austria / December 23, 1993
Home Dimension: Oubliette-137
First Appearance: New Vindicators Academy of Europe #12
Tags: #austria, #human, #oubliette137

Physical Description: Lukas is tall and skinny, with a mane of shaggy hair. His wardrobe is dominated by flannel shirts and cargo pants.

Relationships: Johanna Schwarz (mother), Annette Wimmer (elder sister), Emma Schwarz (elder sister), Emily Schwarz (elder sister), Hannah Schwatz (elder sister), Simon Wimmer (brother-in-law), Alexander Wimmer (nephew), Mattias Binder (best-friend), Patrick Wolf (former friend; current enemy), Violet Lear (girlfriend)

Biography: While exploring the city, Violet Lear and Eve Robbins met Jakob Schwarz and his two best-friends, Mat and Wolf. Wolf wasted no time in trying to get with either girl, but Jakob remained polite—the product of having four older sisters. (NVAE #12)

When Eve told Violet that she liked Jakob, Violet tried to put the two of them together. Jakob, however, only had eyes for Violet and invited her to a show at Lux. Still, Violet resisted and tried to turn it into a group thing, bringing Eve along for the ride. She began to dance with Mat in order to force Jakob to dance with Eve. Mike and Rose were also there, however, and when Rose insulted Mat, Jakob stood up to her—earning him a black eye from Mike.

Even though Jakob was the one who had been punched, it was Mike whom Violet checked on. It won her the cold shoulder from Jakob and the entire scuffle saw them all ejected from the club. It was then that some of Wolf’s cohorts—the Albanian mafia—made a move to abduct Rose, forcing Lex and Violet into action. (NVAE #15)

Eventually, Jakob and Violet started dating. While out, they (as well as Mike and Rose) were ambushed by members of Crux, a group who hated Neo-Sapiens. Knocked out and restrained, Violet woke up to find herself in the back of a van with Rose and no idea where the boys were. After overtaking their captors, Violet learned that the boys were taken to a church, where she discovered Wolf among the enemy. Worse, the girls learned Crux’s plan was to abduct and sterilize Neo-Sapiens, in the hopes of preventing them from repopulating.

Though they were able to save Jakob—whom the group had mistaken for a Neo-Sapien—they were unable to stop them before Mike had been castrated. (NVAE #19)

Michuru wrote:Once upon a time, I introduced a character named Lukas, and then began calling him Jakob in the next post. I have no idea why. As he's become known as Jakob, Jakob will stand and the presumption is that he just prefers to go by his middle name. Why did he introduce himself as Lukas? We'll just say he was that flabbergasted by Violet and Eve's beauty.

So, why post stats for a bystander? Mostly because of the other stuff. Shock and I both were scratching our heads a few weeks back over whether or not it had been established that Jakob had any siblings. Turns out, he did. He once mentioned having sisters. Another time, he says he's the youngest of five children. As I establish more about him, it's good to have the notes to reference, least I start calling someone else by the wrong name. :(

SIDESTEP
(Power Level 8)

Real Name: Abraham “Abe” Chobanian
Status: Alive; enrolled at the New Vindicators Academy of Europe
Height / Weight: 5’6” / 142 lbs.
Hair / Eyes: Brown / Brown
Place of Birth / Date of Birth: New York, New York, United States / March 11, 2010 (16-years-old, as of NVAE #26)
Home Dimension: Oubliette-731
First Appearance: Tabula Rasa #1
Tags: #neosapien, #nva, #nvae, #oubliette731, #refugee, #unitedstates

Physical Description: Abe typically looks apathetic. His hair is a shaggy mop of dark brown. He tends to favor jeans and long-sleeved shirts worn open over T-shirts.

Relationships: Thomas Chobanian (father; deceased), Gabrielle Farouk (mother; deceased), Greg Foster (friend; former roommate and teammate), Jim Loder (former friend and teammate)

Biography: After cancer claimed his father’s life, Abe’s mother struggled with depression. Abe became more independent as a result, frequently taking care of her. When her mental health began to affect her physical health, she was hospitalized. Without any other family to act as a legal guardian, Abe was given to the custody of the New Vindicators Academy of America.

There, he became close friends with his roommate, Greg Foster. Another student, Jim Loder, saw how useful their respective abilities could be and befriended them both. Soon, Remington Eastman and Billy Wojcieovsky joined their inner circle.

As his second year began at the school, Abe’s friendship with Jim required him to act aggressively towards several underclassmen—most notably John Saxon and Dirk Wolfram, who had begun dating Jim and Remington’s ex-girlfriends, Kim Forbes and Suzette Shaw. Under Jim’s orders, Abe teleported all of John’s possessions from the room and even teleported John and Dirk to the top of Mount Everest in the middle of the night. (TR #5)

Ultimately, Jim’s “pranks” crossed a line and the faculty responded by suspending Abe and Greg. Still, Abe found redemption when the Scelerati Society executed their opening salvo: seeing the chaos on the news, Abe leapt into action and began evacuating civilians from the hardest hit areas. (TR #18)

Ultimately, when the Vindicators died trying to stop the return of Apocatastasis, Abe jumped into action once more, assisting his former classmates the only way he knew how: by helping to evacuate the people of Oubliette-731 before the dimension was destroyed.

Abe was not alone in working to evacuate the dimension: Abe’s mother joined Eric Vaughn and his mother in working to save as many people as they could. Though Abe, Eric, and Haley survived, Gabrielle Farouk was still in her home dimension when the bridge between worlds collapsed.

Now an orphan, Abe also finds himself a refugee on a world he never knew—living in a year before he was even born. Still, he has been taken in by the New Vindicators Academy of Europe, where he struggles to not only find his place, but peace of mind from all that he saw and all that he did in his home world. Michuru wrote:Teleport is always a problematic power. Abe started off as an antagonist for my tabletop group, and I was careful to not make him too powerful. Given the descriptors with him, I could justify a high Defense--arguing that he sidesteps (ha) the attack. I could tack a slew of alternate powers on his ability and give him plenty of options in combat. There's so much you can do here, but I didn't want him to lay waste to entire teams by himself.

This ended up being a good thing, as he's now hanging with the NVAE kids, and I don't like to have NPCs perpetually showing up the cast. Sure, he can be helpful, but I don't want him stealing anyone's thunder. As such, he's fine as he is: very squishy, but okay to shuttle people around as needed.
