But then I forgot it and when I looked back at this thread, over a year had gone by :).
Ah, nice! Glad to know I sort of inspired you to give some new life to this thread then. : D
Jabroniville wrote: Fri Jan 15, 2021 9:52 am In honor of your MHA thread, I can do your request. And since I've been looking for a side-project to maybe do once in a while. Something like this might be fun. Cuz, y'know, if there's one thing I need to do, it's add ANOTHER thread to my to-do list :).
Great! Looking forward to seeing it. : D

Complications:
Disabled (Animal)- Bats cannot speak to humans, nor use their paws to easily manipulate objects.
Reputation (Pest)- Bats are notoriously prone to disease (living in mass groups), and are often exterminated wherever they are seen in the civilized world. Many people are naturally frightened of them just by their appearance- they don't even have to do anything.
Weakness (Small Size)- At their natural size, Bats are vulnerable to large creatures- even without good accuracy. Anything of Size Rank -2 or more (human size and up) using a melee attack on a Bat effectively strike with Burst Area Damage at their strength rank naturally.

-The bizarre Applins are semi-common in the forests of Castellia, but harbor a secret known to only a handful of people- if the tiny, wormlike creatures consume enough of certain kinds of material, they can grow into powerful Drakes! When consuming mostly tart fruits, they will transform into Fruit Drakes, and sweet fruits will transform them into Solar Drakes. This metamorphic process takes years to occur, and is fairly rare, as the vulnerable creatures are often killed before that point. Shaped like worms, they are elementally-aligned to forests themselves, and will crawl into an apple or other large fruit and hide within it for days until consuming it. Finally, after possibly years of this, the animal will cocoon itself up in a massive shell, finally erupting in a new, more Draconic form.

-Fruit Drakes greatly resemble Linnorms- the most ancient of Dragonkind. They have short, slender arms and no legs, maintaining a serpentine frame. They often appear to have portions of the fruits they consume as armor on their bodies, particularly reflective, chitinous red armor resembling an apple's skin. Unlike many Drakes, they can fly, and the acids they've consumed up until adulthood allow the new creature to naturally-generate a dangerous Acidic Spray.

-Solar Drakes are almost comical-looking- rotund, belly-sliding creatures reminiscent of baked goods. But their bodies are incredible receptables of solar energy, allowing them great powers, including solar blasts and the "Giga Drain" ability. It gives off a tremendous nectar-like scent, luring in animals upon which it feeds, including bats, insects both large and tiny, and certain herbivores.

Jab's Notes: Well this IS a unique one! Applin seems based off of certain kinds of caterpillar (like the Codling Moth's), which will crawl inside an apple and eat it from the inside out. It's also a Pokemon with two different kinds of evolutions, based off of the fruits you give it. The base form is pretty weak and defenseless, like a lot of Bug-Types, but it's actually Grass/Dragon, and so many be equal parts Linnorm, and the notion of Serpent + Apple may be a Biblical reference, as well. It has a "Gigantamax" option, which I guess is like the Mega-Evolutions of previous generationes. Flapple is a speedy one and Appletun is heavier-duty, so they have slightly different focuses and a few different sorts of powers.

-For stats, I made the "Appletun" one slower and fatter, but more durable. The Flapple one is faster.

Thanks again for doing the request Jab. Really liked how you integrated the idea to the setting.

A small thing about the Applin line I always thought was fun, despite how minor it is, is the shiny form of each member of the line, where the apple parts of each pokémon is green instead of red. That was, like, the one thing about this line that won me over and made me want to shiny hunt them as soon as possible, LOL.

-Blastoise is the final form of a creature that starts out as a mere three-foot-high creature (often called "Squirtles" in an endearing fashion). Titanic underwater Turtles closely related to Archelons (in fact, they may be descended from Archelons born next to Ley Lines or other magical points), these creatures can force huge plumes of water out from a pair of holes at their shoulders, and are nearly-impossible to harm at times. Powerful yet peaceful, Blastoise are often sought for their thick shells (which can be turned into armor or shielding), but few adventurers would dare challenge one, even as a solitary creature. Others are captured and used as trained animals- Druids or Rangers living in aquatic territories would highly prize such a beast, as they are terrestrial enough to move about on land, preventing the issues with "Shark-Themed Rangers" and the like. Though big and unstealthy, they are durable and strong enough to make adequate helpers in battle.

-These creatures are generally only seen alone, though congregate on a few rare beaches in faraway lands in order to lay their eggs, which hatch and return to the sea. Squirtle are relatively common in some areas, but Blastoise are not- many travellers claim to have never even seen these larger creatures, or believe them to be myths. Most likely, people see the human-sized intermediate form, which more resembles the Squirtle than the elder beast. The reason is that most are extremely long-lived animals, often outliving the adventuring lives of their human partners, and so most never see them age to this state. By this point, the creatures are solitary and do not loiter near sentient habitation on land. Only Mermen, Sea Elves and other aquatic creatures are likely aware of where they live.

Jab's Notes: Squirtle, with its wide face and water-spitting power, was very iconic to Pokemon, and is probably still the most popular Water Starter. The adorable tiny creatures give way to a lame middle form (most of the Starters are kinda lame at that point, though), and eventually turn into real powerhouses. There's nothing really more "Pokemon" that "Giant Blue Turtle with actual CANNONS on its shoulders", honestly. Like most "Original 151" major Pokemon, it has stood the test of time, and maintains popularity, gaining both a Mega Evolution and a "Gigantomax" form in later games, typically involving it gaining additional cannons. Squirtle is just UBER-CUTE, though- Bulbasaur may be more rad, but Squirtle & Charmander are top-tier cute Pokemon, left behind only by Pikachu (which is pretty much how he ran away with the show).

-Squirtle was very important to the anime, where he was quickly recruited by Ash after leading an actual GANG of delinquent Squirtles, who had been abandoned by their trainers (the Poke-vesre? Shockingly dark!). Doffing his shades to become a standard-looking Squirtle, he was Ash's choice Water Pokemon for the first seasons, until finally leaving to take his gang back over and protect them from Team Rocket and others who would exploit them.

-The curled tails of Squirtle & Wartortle come from the Japanese myth of the "minogame", a turtle so ancient it has a trail of curled seaweed growing on its back. Blastoise is simply an armored tortoise merged with a tank. The tale of Wartortles using their tails to store oxygen may be a reference to some sea turtles breathing through their cloacas, located near their tales- a fact that hilariously appears as one of Olaf's nonsequitors in "Frozen II".

Best name of any of the original Pokémon. He’s part squirrel, he’s part turtle, and he squirts. Squirtle!

Honestly, favorite first game starter was Bulbasaur. I'd immediately start jacking up stun spore (once i got it), then collect some good assault type Pokemon(Ratatat is a suprisingly good first choice) and start my "Long Game" strategy...

As someone who always favored the water starters, Blastoise is a Pokémon I have a lot of fondness for. Before I even knew there were Pokémon games, I remember watching the first episode of the anime as a child and always thinking about how I would have picked Squirtle if I was in Ash's situation of being a child and having to choose their first Pokémon.

Back when X and Y was relatively new, I remember using Mega Blastoise for a while in my UU team for Pokémon Showdown and stuff, because of how tanky it was and how great Mega Launcher was as an ability. Man, good times.

VBery glad to see new stuff on this thread Jab! : D

Their aging process is little understood, but it's known that they are spiritually connected to wooded regions in profound ways. "Bulbasaurs" are typically found in forests, while larger "Ivysaurs" and huge "Venusaurs" are found in larger and older jungles- but what isn't known by most is that these are all the same creature! This is merely the different life stages of the creature as it ages, engaging in a solitary migration.

-Bulbasaurs start life as dog-sized reptiles with living flower buds on their backs- these flowers can sprout thrashing vines and give off magical powders that can induce sleep, paralysis and even poison; things far too complicated for most animals (who can usually do only one of the three with anything they give off). They are born in smaller forests, often close to civilization and rather young as forests go. As they age, they travel hundreds of miles, looking for larger wooded regions, particularly jungles- once found, the Bulbasaurs will locate elders of their kind- the mighty Venusaurs- who will unleash spores that transform the Bulbasaurs into man-sized "Ivysaurs"- their flowers will thus bloom into elaborate structures, giving them more power. These Ivysaurs will engage in the final migration, entering the largest jungles- there, their spiritual connections to these regions will enlarge them further, until they are truly massive, sprouting massive trees on their backs. Venusaurs may go anywhere, but some will return to smaller regions, where they can enable the Bulbasaur/Ivysaur shift in others.

-Many Bulbasaurs will remain put for years, often befriending various sentients (typically forest-dwellers but occasionally friendly travellers or Questers)- they will thus forgo their aging process for many years at a time (in fact, many never move on). This should be considered a great compliment to their friends, as the creatures are generally mobile. The creatures are treated reverently by Dryads, Faeries and other people of the forest- they are perhaps the most holy and emblematic creatures, respresenting the full power of nature.

Jab's Notes: Bulbasaur was my favourite Pokémon when I first picked up the games- he had the coolest voice ever in the cartoon (he sounded like a Spanish Conquistador!), he looked great (some frog/turtle-thing with a big plant on its back), and it had some awesome attacks. Plus, he was by far the easiest character to play in the first part of the game, because he could whup the first three gym trainers with ease. He's just flat-out inventive as hell- like Blastoise, he represents the full concept of Pokémon in a nutshell- the idea of taking this vaguely-normal creature and putting something strange on it, then calling it an all-new thing. So this Poisonous Plant-Frogs are now uber-famous.

-Ash's Bulbasaur famously chose not to evolve for whatever reason (the other Ivysaurs were pissed, but it saved the day by learning an attack early- the early episodes were very big on "Don't Evolve early, or you'll miss out on cool moves!". Subsequent characters have had them as well, most eventually evolving into Venusaurs, which are treated as highly-powerful combat gods. 3-4 seasons in, Ash's new companion May got a Bulbasaur of her very own. In the games, it got a Mega Evolution & a Gigantomax Evolution, like the othe two original starters. For Venusaur, I created a massive PL 10 creature with D&D monster-style arrays of attacks (based off of numerous Grass-type Poke-Moves)- it's a challenge for nearly any PC to take out, and even a Dragon would hesitate before tackling such a monster. Bulbasaur is much weaker, and fits a Sidekick quotient quite well.

Bulbasaur was my first ever Pokemon in the game. I did SO well with my first one that i always have one in my line-up, even if i have to trad it in from earlier games...

-Parasects are a bizarre variety of magical insect known to inhabit some of the more magical forests in the world. In fact, they are insects (large underground beetles, in fact) that have been overtaken by parasitic mushrooms- these mushrooms are small at first, but after a few years, grow into a massive shape that overtake the insectoid body, acting as an extra shell over the creature's carapace. These mushrooms drive the creature to eat food the mushrooms find more beneficial. Parasects consume nutrient matter from trees, and can prove quite destructive. They can exhaust three various powders from their bodies, as well as use their pincers for extra damage. Some have been known to have the "Effect Spore" ability, which can afflict others with their Powders on any physical contact.

-The giant mushrooms on Parasect backs can be used for various potions and medicines, and are even a delicacy if prepared properly (though there is tremendous danger here, as incompetent chefs may accidentally poison their customers, afflicting them with drowsiness, paralysis or even death!)- this means that many Alchemists deliberately breed the beetles and force the mushrooms on them- only this particular combination produces the proper effects, as the mushrooms will not grow properly without insectoid contact. The mushrooms are easily damaged and pieces can be taken off constantly, and they will grow back in a matter of weeks once the mushrooms take hold. This makes the mind-controlled insects one of thet most useful animals in medical, alchemical, and culinary research!

Jab's Notes: I actually got a lot of use out of Parasect in the first Pokémon game, despite his overwhelming weakness to MANY common forms of attack (in Gen. 1, Poison was super-effective against Bug-Types, meaning it was the only creature in the game with THREE x4 weaknesses). It had some good powers, and was also durable against four very common modes of attack as well- Water, Electricity, Ground & Grass. Not a lot of Pokémon in the early part of the game used the Fire attacks that so easily kill these, making Parasect a fairly solid tank and Status-Affecter in the early going. Parasect with "Effect Spore" effectively have Affliction 4 (choose one) (Extras: Reaction +3) (Flaws: Unreliable -2), due to its 25-30% chance to effect.

-Paras/Parasect was not a major Pokémon, and has largely been ignored over the years, making it one of my "Red Guardians"- it only featured heavily in an early episode "The Problem With Paras", in which a Friend of the Day meets the gang and tries to evolve her Paras because she needs the mushroom for her research. The rest of the time they're just kind of a filler "Bug" Pokémon- Paras being treated as kind of scary (I mean, they look cute in the show, but they're effectively two-foot long spiders) and Parasect either being a backgrounder or a jobber.

Total: Abilities: 14 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 67 / Defenses: 8 (107)

Era: Fantasy Realms
Range: Large Lakes & Oceans
Colouring: Purple, blue, red, yellow
Size: Up to 4 feet long (20-80 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or clusters (2-18).
Diet: Small shellfish, kelp, shrimp.
Tactics: Agile, dodging attacks, alternating between moves.

-Staryu are an odd form of crustacean, appearing like a large, dog-sized Starfish, yet featuring many Water-based Magical Attacks, and a strong, silicate-based shell that renders them stiff as a rock. Lightning quick, they can swim with great speed, and even fly by spinning through the air. Starting out very small, they spend a few years growing in small, warm pools of water. Born with four limbs, they soon grow another, forming the true Starfish shape, gaining further limbs with age, until they are finally eight-limbed creatures. They usually eat plankton by absorbing them into the porous parts of their seemingly-solid bodies- this makes them poor captive creatures, as they require open bodies of water. Staryu do not make many vocalizations, but appear to have significantly more personality than most Starfish, as they are able to show affection, anger, courage, or fear through body language.

-Unusually, once they develop a certain level of maturity (only when all eight limbs form), some Staryu gain Psychic powers, though mostly at lower-levels- a Mental Stun is the most likely one.

Jab's Notes: Staryu & Starmie are among the earliest recurring Pokemon in the anime, being low-level ones used by Misty in the very first game- the second Gym you enter features her Water-Types. Despite that, Staryu & Starmie appeared to have no personality, and were just Misty's starter Pokémon in the show, appearing less and less frequently with the seasons, until they were supplanted by Corsola & Politoed. They kinda spun around, made little "ha!" noises, and shot little streams of water. I don't think they ever did lots of damage to anything, really, but I kinda liked them. Very few Pokémon resemble their little starfish shapes, and they were good, solid "Interesting-Looking Oddity" creatures with a believable evolution (changing color and number of limbs, but still clearly being related). Peculiarly, Misty used BOTH Pokemon simultaneously- a common Gym Leader thing in the games (where the numbers of Pokemon were often limited), but very peculiar for the anime, which typically celebrated diversity in the roster. Having Staryu feature in tons of battles while its evolved form is also a member of the same group is highly unusual. Also curious was Misty almost always using Staryu, as if it was the superior of the two in battle.

-In the game, neither are terribly high-tier- though they get the usual Water-Type stuff, Starmine's half-Psychic and only gets "Psybeam" and a couple of other things. You need TMs for "Psychic" or anything more powerful.

Era: Fantasty Worlds
Range: Deserts, Mountains, Grasslands
Colouring: Yellow, brown
Size: Up to 4 feet long (40-90 lbs.)
Encounter Groups: Solitary to Large Clusters
Diet: Insects (normal and Giant)
Tactics: Dazzling with Sand Attacks, fleeing using Burrowing.

-Sandshrew are a common desert-born race of Pangolin-like creatures that live in the sands instead of the trees. Communal and insect-eating, they rarely interact with Humans unless sought out, though they take to training like a fish to water, and can be used as excellent Desert Scouts and Animal Companions. They are not nearly as defenseless as they look- Sandshrews have vicious claws, can blind attackers with a Sand Attack (based off of sand they've consumed for this exact purpose), and they can even whip the very earth around them into a visibility-altering, violent frenzy that can badly damage the surroundings or anyone within it.

-Sandshrews get larger and scalier as they age, their brick-like scale patterns turning more diagonal. Their claws grow, too, turning quite dangerous- unbeknownst to many, they are actually venomous, producing a health-affecting toxin. Infants are born without venom, "hatching" from what appear to be rocks, their soft scales quickly hardening into stone-like dermal plates. Sandshrews may make popular pets in some regions, but are a notorious pest for their ability to burrow through stone buildings and foundations- it's thought that more than one building collapse is the result of a pet Sandshrew that travelled too much when it was bored- for this reason and the danger the animal poses when angered, it's highly recommended they be extremely well-trained from birth.

Jab's Notes: Sandshrew was in one of the first specific Pokémon episodes I ever saw, and I thought it was about the cutest dang thing ever- LOOK AT ITS BIG OL' BLACK EYES AND TELL ME IT IS NOT CUTE!! It did pretty well against Pikachu (Ash was still learning that Electric-types can't easily beat Ground types unless they do cheating that you can't actually do in the video games), but wasn't one of the more common types, and was swiftly ignored in later stories but for cameos. Still, I love the damn thing. It's built with less power and Alt-Effects than many of it's smaller contemporaries (in the show it's like 2 feet tall, but I gave it reasonable strength and size here- it's size is relatively unimportant) like Pikachu, Bulbasaur, etc. It's Sandstorm power is pretty cool, whipping out an Area Effect damage & Environment power combined- getting close may prove difficult.

-The Alolan area games gave birth to an alternate type- now even more rotund, it looks like a walking igloo and is now an Ice/Steel-Type, albeit one with apparently very low stats. At least it showed appreciation for one of the original 151 Pokémon.

Total: Abilities: 8 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 93 / Defenses: 19 (146)

Era: Fantasy Worlds
b]Range:[/b] Rocky Outcroppings, Mountains, Plains
Colouring: Gray, Brown, stone-like
Size: Up to 45 feet long (7-20 tons)
Encounter Groups: Solitary or Pair
Diet: Large Mammals
Tactics: Lashing out with constricting power, using incredible force.

-Onyx Worms are smaller than their Purple & White cousins, but they are nonetheless incredibly powerful creatures, capable of manipulating the very Earth itself. So strong they can create Earthquakes, Onyx Worms prey on large mammals such as Deer & Bighorn Sheep that live in rocky outcroppings and mountain ranges, but even other large creatures may be taken. Rather than possessing large, toothy maws, Onyx Worms have no teeth, but swallow constricted prey whole, like a snake would. It possesses more elemental weaknesses than its kin, rendering it more vulnerable to certain well-prepared adventuring parties. Onyx Worms are quite rare, and have a magical anatomy that requires comparatively little food, meaning they are not the threat other large creatures might be, and are unlikely to fight to the death if their prey puts up too much of a struggle. This, and their burrowing potential, means that they are rarely threatened by sentient beings.
-Onyx Worms are usually solitary, with males having larger territories that overlap those of multiple females- males will compete over these territories, leading to titanic battles that can destroy entire villages trapped in the wake. This is, in fact, the number one source of death at the hands of these creatures. Onyx Worms will lay eggs after a few months, resembling rocks the size of a human torso- jagged and irregular to avoid rolling around too much. The creatures are born relatively soft, but quickly harden- they're born at about the size of a human being, growing steadily for a few years until they are over forty feet long.

-Various kinds of Dragons and Stone Giants are known to keep them as "pets" of sorts- they can be trained for defense, and few adventurers are prepared for titans of this scale, and they rarely covet their masters' property. So Dragons with long cave networks or burrows are known to keep some well-fed Onyx Worms just before their hoards, and Stone Giants will keep some at the opening of their cave network homes. Some Onyx Worms in proximity to precious metals in their youth will grow to absorb some of these materials into themselves, appearing to be snakes made of quartz, gold, or even diamonds- these are exceedingly-rare and highly-coveted for obvious reasons.

Jab's Notes: Onix (I give it a different name here to differentiate from the stone) was another favourite Pokémon- it just looks AWESOME. One of the biggest creatures of the early generation, it had a huge intro in the series, kicking Ash's Pikachu's ass pretty bad (before it broke the Elemental laws of the games to win- it set off a smoke alarm and water sprayed over the battleground, and Pikachu's electricity was thus enhanced). Onix was one of Brock's regulars ("ONIX! GOOOOOOOOOO!" was Brock's usual phrase, which I liked more than "Pikachu! I choose you!"), but eventually got given to his little brother to train. Onix appeared VERY frequently in the show, however, getting a handful of prominent episodes, often involving variants. I think that because of its powerful, dangerous looking appearance it favored a lot of "Giant Monster"-themed episodes, as one episode showcased an unusual GIANT Onix that had been going on a rampage. One of the show's strongest examples of a giant-sized Pokemon (alongside a Tentacruel in another episode), this monstrous beast went on a rampage until they found a Sandslash had been trapped between its rocky scales- the grateful creature, freed of the irritant, allowed itself to be captured by one of Ash's allies. A later episode featured a CRYSTAL Onix as well. This makes it one of the most well-represented Non-Ash Pokemon in the entire anime, just in terms of episodes focused heavily on it.

-Unfortunately, Onix was a fairly weak Pokémon when it came to the Elemental Rock/Paper/Scissors the game plays- while devastating against Lt. Surge's Electric Brigade, it went down HARD to a well-balanced roster, including Grass & Water attacks. The poor guy's Rock/Ground Type REALLY kicked it in the nuts, despite it's high Physical defense- this turned it into a "Never Take" Pokemon that was just crushed in the game's meta, requiring the creation of Steel-Type Pokemon in the second game to counteract this- Onix therefore got an evolution called "Steelix" that was much more powerful and resistant. Honestly, having Ground AND Rock combined was just poor game design, making a few too many things weak. And I was a bit annoyed, because I don't think Steelix looks very good- it has weird spikey bits and just doesn't look very mobile or natural. The huge jaw and prominent teeth just make it look more cartoonish and less animalistic.

-I utilized a Limited Protection effect here, plus some Area Attacks and some generic Rock/Earth-Type moves (it always weirded me out to see one of EACH in the series- it seems kind of redundant, especially with so many creatures in the early generations having BOTH combined).

The creature does not appear menacing at first, looking like a large, fat pig with an elephantine nose that hangs lazily over it's mouth. It's yellow front half, and dark back half give in a Honeybee-esque appearance as well. You suddenly find yourself getting very sleepy, and the creature lifts it's nose, giving you a horrific look into it's sharp-toothed maw.

-A strange creature from the Western Isles, Hypno-Tapirs are related to their more common brethren, but possess the odd psionic power of Dream-Eating, allowing them to read the minds and consume the dreams of living beings. This appears to not harm the victims, save prevent them from dreaming for a time. Those suffering from nightmares are said to covet these creatures, but their bizarre appearance and feeding habits tend to disturb most. They are among the most unintelligent, basic animal creatures to possess psionic powers. Hypno-Tapirs typically wait on common pathways, and attack whichever creatures (preferably sentient) they can find, Hypnotise them, and then eat their dreams.

Jab's Notes: I was thinking Hypno/Drowzee were kind of redundant with the Psychic-Types I've already made, so I decided to do something unique with it- I left on only it's defining powers, plus Confusion (for the hell of it), and threw them onto a REGULAR Tapir, instead of making it yet another man-shaped Pokemon. So we have a big, fat Dream-Eater. Hypno & Drowzee appear somewhat frequently as low-tier Psychic-Types in the anime, and it has one of the more distinctive "Shiny" versions, becoming bright pink as opposed to yellow & brown. Its design is classic "Early Pokemon"- they're simply colored, look only a little bit different than their base animal (the bicolored look is like that of a Malayan Tapir), and has an evolved version that's barely any different- very "Filler".

-The concept is actually based off of the Baku of Japanese mythology- dream-eating creatures with elephant heads and the bodies of tigers- "Baku" is also the name used for the Malayan Tapir.

Re: Hypno-Tapir

Something about Hypno always weirded me out, maybe the strange design with no mouth and the big nose and stuff, all paired with his alien yellow coloring, but I always really liked Drowzee (also, the ridiculous amount of bad Hypno creepy pastas I read as a child might have been a factor in me disliking it, LOL).

Still, I remember using a Hypno in my team on Heart Gold to cause sleep on Pokémon I wanted to catch, due to it showing up relatively early in the game.

Loved your take on 'em, Jab. : D
