Unfair Death: Killed via chicanery in a gladatorial contest against a Roman to determine who would get what land, dooming Atlanteans to be beneath the waves forever.
Resolution: Trident defeats his Roman opponent, but doesn't kill him. He opts instead to work towards forming an alliance between Romans and Atlanteans so that both cultures will survive — and unite each other's empires into an advanced utopian future.

-Another peculiar one, going much further into fantasy than even most characters in this game is Trident, who is a green-skinned Atlantean Gladiator. Trident fights with Capoeria, who was fighting Romans in 111 BC- during a contest to see who would stay on land and who would be plunged beneath the waves (the Romans refused the Atlanteans' deal that only HALF of each nation would suffer that fate), he was beaten via chicanery by his Roman opponent and killed. Now, he fights as a Dance Battling Trident-handed martial artist with a TON of original powers, such as his various Bio-Fields, which can slow, stun or weaken opponents' attacks, giving him a lot of options out there. He can also turn into water, send out Area Attacks (with low range), Blast and force people away from him, making him yet another super-versatile Eternal Champion.

That's a fine piece of Shadow fan art for such a mediocre game.

It's pretty interesting just how much the games were being pushed before being unceremoniously dropped because of Sega of Japan: There were appearances in comic books, spinoff games, even Choose Your Own Adventure novels!

Eternal Champions Fighting Style:
Accurate Attack, Chokehold, Fast Grab, Power Attack, Withstand Damage

Powers:
"Vendetta" Features 1: May Use a Unique Move as a Finishing Move (Turns Into Giant Scarab Beetle and Eats Opponent) [1]

Sun Reflection/Jackal's Bite +12 (+4 Ranged Damage, DC 19)

Initiative +9

Defenses:
Dodge +11 (DC 21), Parry +13 (DC 23), Toughness +3 (+11 Anubis Block), Fortitude +5, Will +6

Complications:
Weakness (Can't Swim)- Ramses fears the water greatly, and was murdered by being shoved into the Nile River.
Power Loss (Special Moves)- Eternal Champions characters cannot spam out their Special Moves- they will lose the ability to do so if used for too many rounds in a row, and must allow it to regenerate naturally. Some moves deplete the Special Attack Meter more quickly.

Total: Abilities: 78 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 12 + 5 / Powers: 31 / Defenses: 11 (150)

Unfair Death: Shoved into the Nile River by an assassin before he could birth the line that would defeat the armies of invaders- these conquerors fought back Alexander the Great's armies, and thus prevented much of human culture from developing.
Resolution: Ramses eliminates those who threatened to usurp his rule and makes sure to preserve many of the treasures and the knowledge of his people so mankind would have the chance to learn from them and ascend to higher knowledge in the future.

-Ramses III is from the Eternal Champions sequel, and would have started the line that fought off some mysterious invaders- in an alternate history, Egypt was conquered pre-Alexander, and Alexander's forces were fought back. Therefore, in the future, many Roman victories became Egyptian ones, and many potential cultures never developed. He can turn into animals to do some of his attacks (since he'd lose his special moves, I figure this for a standard Metamorph), Teleport (lotta that in this game), do a Multiattack combo (same with this), and take a super-tough form that will stop pretty much any damage for a period of time).

Initiative +9

Defenses:
Dodge +11 (DC 21), Parry +13 (DC 23), Toughness +4 (+6 Manifest), Fortitude +8, Will +7

Complications:
Prejudice (Vampiric)- Midknight accidentally became a vampire-like creature after a lab accident while creating a biological weapon. He is now hunted by vampire hunters, and society in general despises him.
Responsibility (Not Giving In To Bloodlust)- Though he craves blood, Midknight refuses to take it- his has grown dessicated and is greatly pained by it, but he cannot bring himself to take a life.
Motivation (Finding the Cure)- Not just for his own condition (or the others afflicted with it once the CIA used it against people in times of war), but all diseases.
Power Loss (Special Moves)- Eternal Champions characters cannot spam out their Special Moves- they will lose the ability to do so if used for too many rounds in a row, and must allow it to regenerate naturally. Some moves deplete the Special Attack Meter more quickly.

Total: Abilities: 78 / Skills: 58--29 / Advantages: 11 + 5 / Powers: 28 / Defenses: 14 (155)

Unfair Death: Killed by a vampire hunter just before he could develop the cure for his condition.
Resolution: MidKnight survives the surprise attack (slaying his attacker), escapes to his lab, and finishes his work in perfecting the cure. While his cure works on others, Knight remains unable to heal himself due to the unique chemistry of his affliction. MidKnight uses his immortality to benefit humanity, though: he becomes president of the World Science Organisation and diligently eradicates all known diseases.

-Midknight has about the most insane origin story EVER- he was a brilliant, London-born CIA operative who worked as a biochemist, and was meant to end the Vietnam War by creating a chemical weapon; the compound would leave its victims near-death, awaiting the antidote. However, he found himself unwilling to participate in that much human destruction- he stole his weapon and ran away. Unfortunately, he was soon cornered by CIA & Interpol agents, who chased him off a ledge in a chemical storage facility- the impact covered him in his own solution as he fell into a chemical vat, transforming him into a modern-day immortal vampire. Gaining great strength and speed, he escaped once more, and attempted to create a cure for his condition, which was also giving him the trademark vampiric bloodlust. Meanwhile, over the next 133 years (!), many third-world countries were overrun by similar vampires, as the U.S. had used Midknight's solution as a weapon, but let it get out of control. Refusing to kill people to sustain himself, his body was slowly rotting away- Midknight finally suceeded in making the cure... but was killed by a government agent firing a magnesium stake through his heart. Now he seeks to be resurrected so that he may cure his own condition, and numerous others, acting like some sort of Martial Arts Vampire Doctor.

-So after ALL THAT, Midknight should have arguably been one of the top characters in the game, but he was in none of the spin-offs. As one of the major characters, I figure him for PL 8.5 overall. He has a lot of Jump-y moves, can turn into a Dog (though it's just a Tiger Knee-style forward-leaping attack), Hypnotize others, and Multiattack in combat, making him more versatile than many other Fighting Game characters. He even has a "Manifest" power that temporarily boosts his durability, letting him break his PL for a short time!

Unfair Death: Killed while trying to stop a mad scientist from setting off a mass pandemic with a lethal virus.
Resolution: Blade saves the scientist from the set-up, retrieves the vial, and forces himself to restrain his anger. He reports the incident to his superiors and the public, which helps bring about several worldwide government reforms and establish a world peace council to bring stability to the world.

-A futuristic cop wearing tights with a Superhero-ish look to them, J. Blade is a Syrian fighter raised in Africa, but works in "New Chicago". Possessing a violent temper, he was kicked off the police force after beating a criminal to near death. Becoming a bounty hunter back in Syria, he was killed by his own government when they divebombed both him and his target- a rogue scientist who'd created a lethal virus. The vial containing the virus being smashed open in the melee was the last thing Blade ever saw.

-One of the stronger Eternal Champions characters, Blade uses a variety of Future Cop weapons- allowing him to Nullify someone's ability to use Projectiles, Stun, Blast (with Homing), slow down enemy Projectiles, or be even tougher than the standard Withstand Damage-having martial artist.

Complications:
Prejudice (Witch)- Xavier is actually a genius scientist and alchemist, but to the supersticious folk of 1600s Salem, he's an evil witch consorting with the devil. They get their burn on when they discover his unlimited energy source.
Power Loss (Special Moves)- Eternal Champions characters cannot spam out their Special Moves- they will lose the ability to do so if used for too many rounds in a row, and must allow it to regenerate naturally. Some moves deplete the Special Attack Meter more quickly.

Total: Abilities: 76 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 12 + 5 / Powers: 53 / Defenses: 14 (176)

Unfair Death: Burned as a witch for his spectacular invention of an unlimited energy source.
Resolution: Xavier tricks the townspeople into burning his tools with him. This small change lets him use his newfound energy source to break free from his bonds — and travel throughout history to help humanity increase both its knowledge of science and its tolerance of the unusual. His escape also fools the townspeople into believing they'd burned the last warlock, which brings an end to the Salem witch trials.

-Xavier is a motor-mouthed alchemist in Salem, Massachusetts who has discovered the secret of unlimited energy- of course the townsfolk freaked out when they discovered it and burned him as a witch. Brought to the Eternal Champions tournament, Xavier uses a variety of Magical-esque powers that are actually COMPLETELY INSANE. He animates his cane (a Blast), extends it, Swaps Places with his opponent (Teleport & Teleport Attack), Confuses them, turns them to gold temporarily, moves them around, strikes them at range via a Teleporting strike, Deflects... and SWITCHES BODIES WITH THEM. This latter power is bonkers, basically causing him to switch bodies with his foe, except that instead of a Possession/Mind Control thing, they keep the same Health Bar and basically fight as normal, but with each others' characters. I ended up going with a Variable/Morph into the other guy's body and powers, as well as transforming the other guy into a copy of Xavier- both powers are temporary (about 4 rounds, I guess). This of course isn't THAT great a power as you're basically turning the opponent into a kick-ass fighter- in a VIDEO GAME, it's completely insane because you F up the other guy's entire strategy in one motion (especially if he doesn't know any of Xavier's moves and you know his).

-Unsurprisingly, Xavier is the most expensive Eternal Champion thus far, as his Body Swap power adds up a bunch of different stuff, AND he's got a huge array of other abilities. Seriously, he is INSANELY versatile. How you gain all those powers with SCIENCE AND ALCHEMY is beyond me, but hey- Doctor Strange can suck it next to this dude.

Wow, somehow, despite being familiar with the game, I never noticed just how similar he was to Morbius.

Those were kind of awesome in their silliness. I liked them way better than most MK fatalities. I have to add this to the list of old games I haven't played that I want to play. For the time, those looked like decent graphics.

Power Loss (Special Moves)- Eternal Champions characters cannot spam out their Special Moves- they will lose the ability to do so if used for too many rounds in a row, and must allow it to regenerate naturally. Some moves deplete the Special Attack Meter more quickly.

Total: Abilities: 84 / Skills: 58--29 / Advantages: 14 + 5 / Powers: 18 / Defenses: 16 (142)

Unfair Death: Set up with an active bomb during an attack on some high-level public figures, despite refusing to kill anyone.
Resolution: Larcen disposes of the bomb before he makes it to the Chief of Police, who ends up commending the now-ex-mobster for his bravery. Larcen eventually becomes part of a special governmental task force devoted to organized crime and takes down all of his former bosses while helping the task group ensure the eradication of organised crime forever.

-Larcen Tyler is the other major character of the Eternal Champions franchise, being a 1920s Cat Burglar with links to the Mafia and a high level of skill in Praying Mantis Kung-Fu, as well as a refusal to kill anyone. Ordered to plant false evidence in the hospital room of a rival crime boss, Tyler was given a bomb instead, and it turns out the room belonged to the Chief of Police. The bomb went off, killing them both (as well as most of the people at the hospital).

-Larcen's neat and unique, like many of the cooler EC characters- despite a pretty generic look (just a guy in a long trenchcoat, like a 1980s Comic Book Detective), he has a ton of weapons to let him use various tactics to win. He can throw Sais, Swing around, and more- one move is like Vega's Barcelona Roll- a rolling slash with his blades. As a combination of a warrior monk, ninja, prohibition-era gangster and Batman, he's pretty expensive and highly-skilled.

Larcen's probably my favorite character from the game. He's like something straight out of a Pulp series from the 30s and 40s. And unlike other characters, he could conceivably have the martial arts skills he has (the Pulps were full of 'trained in the Orient' style characters), resulting in this two-fisted martial arts cat-burglar in a fedora and trench coat, using a grappling hook like it was Indiana Jones whip, kicking ass while adhering to a strict No Killing Code. I love it.

He'd fit right in with Doc Savage, the Shadow, the Spider, the Green Hornet and Kato, etc. Heck, give him a domino mask and he'd do all right as a JSA member.

Seriously, he is INSANELY versatile. How you gain all those powers with SCIENCE AND ALCHEMY is beyond me, but hey- Doctor Strange can suck it next to this dude.

But yeah, Xavier is another cool one, everything from the look to the abilities to just the name (There's a reason why Charles is only rarely referred to as Professor X when they could say Xavier). That last name makes me wonder if he isn't some descendant of King Arthur as well.

Initiative +9

Defenses:
Dodge +11 (DC 21), Parry +13 (DC 23), Toughness +3, Fortitude +8, Will +8

Complications:
Responsibility (God of Death)- Thanatos seeks a return to his old power, as his current weakness has taken lives that were not meant to be snuffed out so soon.
Power Loss (Special Moves)- Eternal Champions characters cannot spam out their Special Moves- they will lose the ability to do so if used for too many rounds in a row, and must allow it to regenerate naturally. Some moves deplete the Special Attack Meter more quickly.

Total: Abilities: 74 / Skills: 44--22 / Advantages: 13 + 5 / Powers: 27 / Defenses: 16 (147)

Unfair Death: An indeterminate force set off by Xavier Pendragon's death during the Salem Witch Trials weakened him and altered the rules of death, sending many people to their dooms before their time.
Resolution: Thanatos ends up in front of the Eternal Champion and Raven, who give Thanatos a new role: the master of Time itself. Thanatos replaces Kronos- who had gone mad from the assault of the same force that attacked Thanatos- and prevents time from falling apart.

-A Headswap of Xavier Pendragon, Thanatos is actually the very-weakened GREEK GOD OF DEATH, who has lost power as a result of Xavier's demise and some unnamed force. He is unlocked by beating Xavier in "Champion Mode" using a Vendetta kill. Fighting in the tournament with a Scythe and some funky magical powers, the skull-faced dude is one of the weakest Greek Gods I've ever built, but hey- they explain why he's on the same level as everyone else. Like some of the others, information about him is limited, so I don't know which powers are what with his arsenal: Muskateer, Iron Maiden, Death Form, Rack, Death's Door & Corpsifier. I know one is a Blast, one is a Multiattack, and another is basically a "leap across the screen and slash" type move. The Rising Dead is a Shoryuken with a blade, reflected in his Special Moves.
