Sailor Moon SuperS

SAILOR MOON SUPERS:
-... *sigh*... well, HERE GOES...

Out of all the seasons of Sailor Moon, the fourth seasons, Sailor Moon SuperS (said like "Supers", but with a big "S", because reasons), is almost universally the most disliked by the show's adult fanbase. Even back in the 1990s, in the early days of the widespread online anime fandom, SuperS was seen as pretty weak- the only thing helping it was that it went un-dubbed for years, and hadn't entirely been released by the time most North Americans had seen the show (the first episode of the English dub came out near the end of this season in Japan).

Of all the show, SuperS feels the most like a "post-script" season. As if both Naoko Takeuchi (the writer of the manga) and the show's producers were like "WELP, we have to keep the show going to make more money, but... what do we do? Um... an evil Queen character, I guess? Maybe a TRIO instead of a quartet or quintet of villains? And they're hunting for HEART CRY--shit, we already did that one. Okay, they're hunting for DREAMS". It's just... filler. Like they were done all the big stories and good ideas (and had introduced Sailors for all the planets in the Solar System), so they just threw in some generic stuff for the bad guys to hunt and made some odd-looking villains. Takeuchi's character designs took an even bigger turn for the weird, we met a new ally, and they all got new powers again.

The point of this season is that the villains are hunting a magical being called Pegasus, who hides in the "beautiful dreams" of innocent people. So each episode, our "Victim of the Week" gets attacked by one of the evil witch Zirconia's minions, who search the victim's dreams for Pegasus, then try to kill that person so Pegasus can't hide out their later- so we have our victims, our Filler, our baddies, and what they're searching for. First, Zirconia orders around the goofy Amazon Trio, then the immature Amazoness Quartet. Finally, we see Zirconia's boss- the immortal Queen Nehalennia, who wishes to remain young and beautiful forever. THANKFULLY, the show tells us within the first episode that Pegasus is hiding in Chibi-Usa's dream, so we're not left pretending to not think that the main characters AREN'T going to be the owners of the Magical Macguffin this season. So instead, the baddies are hunting Victims while Chibi-Usa is having nightly conversations with the wise, emotionally-mature Pegasus, often about the nature of love, jealousy, or respect.

More Chibi-Moon, All The Time:
-So yes, out of all the seasons of the show, THIS is the one that's absolutely bleeding with way, way too much Chibi-Usa, who has at this point more or less replaced the main character as the focus of the series- almost all of the "Victim of the Week" characters are introduced via a reaction to Chibi-Usa. If it's a "Sailor Focus" episode, it's Chibi-Usa who spends the most time interacting with them, or speaking to Pegasus about their actions. To say this does not help this season's reputation with adult fans is to be a master of understatement.

There's... weirdness here. Chibi-Usa & Pegasus are clearly in love, even though one is either a horse with wings or a young-looking boy who is millennia old. He blushes around her, at one point sees her shirtless and looks away all embarrassed and let's just say you'll be doing a lot of cringing. What it comes right down to is this season is meant to be a love letter to the show's core audience of little girls. First they wanted to see older girls in pretty costumes (a core aspect of the "Shoujo" genre of anime, and part of what makes Barbie and other fashionable-girl shows popular), but once Chibi-Usa showed up, the girls suddenly saw themselves in the character. So her wild popularity led to more and more Chibi-Usa until we finally had this- a whole season DEVOTED to the character. And in the process they dialed down her immaturity and made her a more pensive, emotionally-mature character who was curious about human behavior. Then gave her a pretty-boy love interest who was also a pretty horsie. This made her less annoying... but also made her more boring. And as she's the main character, this turns the season into kind of a slog.

Speaking of weird, the Amazoness Quartet appear to be between Chibi-Moon (in Elementary School) and Sailor Moon (Middle School) in age... yet are depicted as scantily-clad girls who flit about in micro-bikinis while sporting large amounts of cleavage. It's one of the cringey-est things for adult fans of the show to see. Maybe not quite as cringey as Chibi-Usa getting her wish to turn into a busty adult, and suddenly Pegasus being all "EW YOU LOOK OVER EIGHT YEARS OLD NOW- GROSS!", but pretty close to that.

The Other Sailors Tag Along:
-One of the biggest crimes of SuperS is conflated with the biggest crime of Sailor Moon as a whole... the other Sailors feel largely ignored. The girls all have an episode of focus in the "Amazon Trio" section, but then we get a big "The Sailors Power-Up!" episode... and it STILL HAS A VICTIM OF THE WEEK! Like... they go through all of this rigamorale to power-up the girls, but it's done off-handedly and without any focus- they gain heart-shaped chest crystals, chokers, and see-through shoulder bits on their outfits, but don't even showcase new powers until several episodes later. Worst of all, in the "Amazoness Quartet" season, Venus & Jupiter have to SHARE an episode again! Yes, in a season so full of filler that we have various Chibi-Usa hangers-on getting attacked as Victims, two Sailors can't even get more than a few episodes of focus across 40-ish episodes.

-Never mind that the Outer Senshi, used so well in Sailor Moon S, COMPLETELY VANISH and we only get a cameo from Uranus & Neptune. Despite the manga version featuring not only those two, but the reawakened Sailor Saturn as well. Like, there's a SHIT LOAD of filler in this season- you couldn't manage to throw in "Sailor Saturn ages back and returns"?

The Boring Season:
-And "Slog" is the best word for it. While I was never quite up on watching the show very consistently (look at how long my "Reviews" topic has been going for; it started at Ronin Army and has continued on here!), I sometimes went at a pretty good clip, especially at first. By this point, I was going through episodes often a MONTH or so apart! It's just... dull. The villains are more one-note, the "Victims of the Week" more boring, there's way more bad filler instead of fun stuff, and most of my favorite characters have been de-emphasized for MOAR CHIBI-MOON. Hell, once again, Saiors Jupiter and Venus have to FRIGGIN' SHARE an episode of focus! In a season where "a kid who is afraid of a pommel horse" and "a young girl is physically abused by her swordfighting mother... out of love" are featured! That kind of filler is present and they made two of the core seven characters share, because God forbid they take some spotlight from Chibi-Moon?

It doesn't help that the maturity and frightening situations of the prior season, Sailor Moon Super, has mostly fallen away. And the popular new characters, Sailors Uranus, Neptune and Saturn, are nowhere to be seen! Uranus & Neptune only get a single third of an episode to focus on what they've been doing, and then they step away! Considering that in the original manga story, the "Dream Arc", both characters are present, this is especially egregious- there is literally no good reason for the characters to not be around!

This season also lacks the moral questions of the first bunch, nor the worst of the drama- Sailor Moon is no longer a reluctant heroine, having accepted her role a couple seasons ago. She & Chibi-Usa no longer hate each other. There's no adversarial, unhelpful Sailors chiding and bossing the younger ones around. Usagi & Mamoru are together in a fairly platonic, boring way and we don't see that much of them. There's no question as to whether or not it's worth murdering a young girl to ensure the safety of the universe. This entire season is just... there.

The pace picks up near the very end, at least, but I feel like the Queen doesn't get enough focus at first, Zirconia is dealt with too quickly, the Quartet are FAR too interchangeable and unfocused.

This season also gives us our last look at various members of the supporting cast. We catch a shot of Motoki's girlfriend Reika, unseen since the first season! Usagi's brother Shingo makes his final appearance, as does Rei's grandfather and Yuuichiro, putting a bit of a sad cap on that subplot. It seems a bit odd that with 40 episodes left, we'd have no more room for the main character's brother or father, but that's what happens when you're speeding through things and shift the focus to another character.

Some Positives:
-The seasons is at least funny, though. The first villains, the Amazon Trio, are a bunch of slack-asses who sit around a bar all day and pick their victims based off of who's the most doable, with one picking on MILFs (ATTABOY), and another, a gay male, disguising into the world's most convincing drag to seduce handsome young men. It leads to a lot of goofy circumstances. In the manga, they're more one-off in nature, so the show elaborates upon them before discarding them in the typical "Happy Ending For The Villains". There's a few good episodes here and there- Uranus & Neptune have a fun one, you see more of Sailor Mercury being an adorable, love-obsessed romantic dork despite all her bookworm tendencies, and more. Pegasus occasionally gives good advice to Chibi-Usa, who is a bit confused as to the nature of adults and how they behave.

Queen Nehalennia, who turns out to be our Big Bad, is a pretty great-looking villain, and her mad, selfish desires put the entire planet at risk. So there's some stakes, as well.

Complications:
Power Loss (All Powers)- Sailor Senshi must be able to gesture and speak freely to use their powers. If they are Bound or Snared, they cannot use their attacks easily.
Normal Identity (Tsukino Usagi, Without Power Stick)
Responsibility (Sailor Senshi)- The Senshi are charged to fight evil.
Responsibility (Schooling)- Unfortunately, Usagi is terrible at it.
Secret (Identity)- The Senshi must not reveal their identities to the world at large, nor their villains.
Responsibility (Princess Serenity)- Usagi/Serena is both the Princess of the Moon Kingdom, and the future Queen of the World. This makes her many enemies, and gives her numerous responsibilities.
Responsibility (I Just Want To Be Normal)- Usagi hates the constant violence, and the threats against her life. Her fondest wish is to "just be a normal girl" once again, and leave all this super-heroing behind.
Power Loss (All Powers)- At times, Usagi's desire to be normal actually affects her powers, and she loses her special abilities.
---
Responsibility (Lazy)- Usagi does not like to do things that require effort.
Responsibility (Gluttonous)- Usagi LOOOOOOOOOOOVES to eat, particularly sweet things.
Responsibility (Incompetent)- Usagi is a poor student.
Responsibility (Sleepyhead)- Usagi is famous for her ability to sleep in past her alarm and be late for school.
Responsibility (Crybaby)- Usagi's first reaction to almost every bit of stress, for YEARS, was to openly cry rivers of tears.
---
Relationship (Naru Osaka)- Naru was Usagi's best friend in the early days- it was them plus two other background girls, and later, only Naru as Usagi's Non-Sailor-Friend.
Relationship (Ami- Sailor Mercury)- Usagi was the only person to befriend the "snobbish" world-class student, and deeply admires Ami's brilliance.
Relationship (Rei- Sailor Mars)- Sailor Mars is grouchy, hard-working, snide and arrogant- she despises all of Usagi's above-mentioned Responsibilities, and is constantly screaming at her to improve. Usagi both hates to be insulted, and spitefully argues back with Rei, who is "So mean!" The two pick at and tease each other, and generally never go more than a day without a big fight. However, Usagi deeply respects Rei's work ethic, beauty, grace and toughness- it is Rei to whom Usagi entrusts the Silver Crystal when she fears she'll break and give it up, and it is Rei's loss that Usagi feels most deeply at D-Point.
Relationship (Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask)- Usagi & Mamoru argued non-stop at first, with him gladly teasing the silly young girl. However, she had a serious crush on the mysterious, handsome Tuxedo Mask, who always came to her rescue. Only later did they realize their true feelings for one another, as they were in fact lovers in another life, and destined to be together in the future. When he breaks up with her in Sailor Moon R, she is emotionally shattered to the point where even her closest friends won't tease her.
---
Relationship (Minako- Sailor Venus)- Usagi was once worshipful of the possibly-fictional Sailor V, but soon comes to view Minako as a kindred spirit in Idol-loving weirdness.
Relationship (Makoto- Sailor Jupiter)- Usagi was the only person to befriend the violent giantess, and comes to deeply admire Mako's strength, hatred of bullies, and cooking ability. That the two have the same taste in men (such as Motoki) is helpful as well.
Relationship (Motoki)- Usagi nursed a serious, but childlike, crush on Motoki Furuhata in the first season.
Relationship (Chibi-Usa)- Usagi finds the bratty little "spore" as annoying as anything- the two are entirely too much alike. It's only later, once she realizes that "Little Usagi" is actually her own DAUGHTER, from the future, that they start to get along.
---
Phobia (Thunder)- Usagi is petrified of thunder, to the point of screaming, crying and running away to hide when she hears it.
Responsibility (Believes in People)- Usagi has an obsessive desire to see the best in people- she refuses to see only the negatives, and is constantly willing to help, even towards people who despise her (like Nastumi/An).
Responsibility (That Kind Of Girl)- Usagi tends to draw strong reactions from some men, who fall obsessively in love with her at first sight. Umino crushes on her during their time at Junior High. Seijuro/Ail openly crushes on her as soon as he comes to Earth, almost abandoning his lifelong companion for her. Prince Demande is so obsessed with Sailor Moon/Neo-Queen Serenity that he tries to use his powers to RAPE HER.
---
Enemy (The Dark Kingdom, Ail & An, The Black Moon Clan, The Death Busters, Queen Nehellenia, Sailor Galaxia)

Total: Abilities: 38 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 76 / Defenses: 23 (165)

Sailor Moon- Loser-As-Audience-Surrogate:
-Sailor Moon is a character that I found tough to like. Given that the TV show is CALLED Sailor Moon, this is perhaps not a good thing, but let's face it- the girl is kind of annoying. It's ultimately the POINT of her character, though- she's meant to represent the "Everygirl". Rather than excelling at things or being a role model, she's lazy, clumsy, a sleepyhead, a crybaby, argumentative, and prone to mindless crushes. Running gags about her involve incredible gluttony (scarfing down candy by the ton) or sloth (her mother is constantly screaming at her over being late for school). She's even DUMB- her repeated failures on tests is another constant source of embarrassment- in the first first episode, some handsome stranger sees her crumpled-up test score and asks if she's "just stupid".

-One thing that's clearer in retrospect, and when I've read other retrospectives on the series, is that Usagi is basically an innocent, guileless person who believes in EVERYONE. When all of the other students are talking about shunning the brilliant, stand-offish newcomer, Usagi's the own who cuts through Ami Mizuno's defensive walls and realizes that the girl's not a snob after all. Similarly, when Makoto Kino comes to school and is openly feared as a hostile brawler, Usagi ignores their protests and makes a new friend forever. Repeatedly throughout the show, Usagi does this- ignoring the detractors, and fighting past people's defensiveness, and willingly helps people out. And really, no other character could have drawn quite the reaction we get out of her in Sailor Moon R, when she has her heart broken by Mamoru, and becomes so emotionally devastated that she can barely function, actually staring at him with a desperate smile and pleading, tear-filled eyes. It's INSANE.

-She's also a weak link in battles, and runs screaming from just about every bad guy in the early days. She cries when hurt, whines about bruises, and generally doesn't act like any real superhero. She even mourns the loss of a "normal life", and bemoans the fact that she just has to get into recurring battles and watch her dearest friends get hurt. In this, she's actually quite realistic- I think plenty of normal people, even those who idolize and fantasize about the "Superhero Lifestyle", would pretty quickly get sick of holding their bleeding loved ones or fighting monsters.

-But yeah, I found her annoying. That every male character seemed to fall in love with her instantly only made me MORE annoyed (I mean, Sailor Mars is right there). Thankfully, Mars was around to speak for people like me. That said, it was pretty neat by the end of Sailor Moon R how she'd basically had to accept her life, and instead of crying about every little thing, she decided to suck it up and walk straight into danger without even putting the others in the line of fire with her.

-Anime being more cynical than comics at times, it's nice to see Sailor Moon playing the "Superman/Spider-Man" role of "NOBODY DIES" so thoroughly and so straightly. She refuses to kill ANYONE if she can help it, and even though her actions threaten all existence (they kill Hotaru; it's all over), you can see WHY she does it, and why she fights so hard. And the we get some great stuff when Hotaru reveals herself to be Sailor Saturn and dives into Pharaoh 90's body to engage in a suicidal battle, and Sailor Moon just LOSES it, crying "Moon Crisis... Make Up!" over and over again, desperately trying to empower herself into Super Sailor Moon, even without the Holy Grail, which allowed that transformation in the first place.

Sailor Moon SuperS Notes:
-In this season, Usagi has... matured. Sometimes. I mean, when Reika reveals an issue in her relationship with Motoki, Usagi is more or less projecting her own relationship foibles onto the couple as well, declaring herself lonely. Hilariously, her "problems" are only existing because she's been tying up the phone lines complaining to her friends that Mamoru hasn't called her... thus PREVENTING MAMORU FROM CALLING HER and explaining that he's away on a college seminar. Oh, the days before e-mail. Plus there's the time she & Chibi-Usa made fools of themselves in front of Mamo's college friends, who assumed they were young kids he was hanging out with. And a fairly notorious episode sees her suddenly get jealous when Mamoru spends a few nights at Rei's temple- Usagi dresses up as a ninja to prowl around and spy, yells at Rei for accidentally seeing Mamoru's butt, and more.

-So she's still childish here and there- notoriously so, in some cases. But a lot of the most negative traits of the character have disappeared. She's no longer a reluctant heroine, having accepted her lot in life ages ago, and she's together and happy with Mamoru for the most part.

Sailor Moon's Powers:
-Sailor Moon is easily the most powerful Senshi, which makes her tricky to stat out. She's the worst fighter overall, and is generally the least-skilled or physically capable one, which reduces her points-cost considerably. But all those powers.... they need some explanation. The Disguise Pen was rarely-used after the first season, but allowed her to disguise herself back when there weren't five Senshi kicking around and you had one character doing everything. Her Tiara is statted separately from her other attacks, since it's a Removable Device that retained its power over the years (mainly in movies). It has been a Blast, a Snare and even once nullified Mind Control over a small area.

-However, Sailor Moon's Defenses are no better than those of her allies, and combined with her lower Fighting Ability, this makes her vulnerable, and therefore she requires her teammates to either distract the foes, or wear them down.

-Her "Princess Serenity" stuff is in another build- that character only makes rare (ie. Season Finale) appearances.

Sailor Moon SuperS Powers:
-This season features another all-new uniform (with a white skirt & collar that has a rainbow pattern at the edges), but in order to use her final attack, she now needs Pegasus to be present. This enables her new Moon Kaleido Scope to unleash a gunshot-style effect called "Moon Gorgeous Meditation"- an attack which causes the Lemures targeted by her powers to cry "Stage Out!" and disintegrate as the screen "cuts in half" and the monster splits in twain, vaporizing and causing their shadowy silhouette to fade away. Since the issue now is that she can't become "Super Sailor Moon" anymore, not that their foes are too strong for their old attacks, she doesn't have a power increase like is usual in the show. She even gets a lot cheaper, as Pegasus is required to allow her final attack!

Chibi-Usa- The Base-Breaking Character:
-Chibi-Usa... I have some varying opinions about this one. Like most fans, I generally see her as the start of the "downward slide", the "Jump the Shark" moment, if you will, of this series, as her whiny antics, obvious "this is for the little kids to enjoy" mentality (OK, so the show is FOR little kids, but it shouldn't come at the EXPENSE of the older characters, y'know!), manipulation of the other characters for her own ends, etc., were just a massive bring-down. The fact that Sailor Moon SuperS was basically the "Sailor Chibi-Moon Show" once she got ACTUAL POWERS didn't help matters. In Sailor Moon R, she immediately debuts with a lot of adversarial qualities, pulling a GUN on Usagi, and getting between her and Mamoru. And soon she brainwashes the Tsukinos into accepting her as a member of the family, tries to steal Usagi's Silver Crystal, and manhandles Mamo while he & Usagi are on a break.

-Called "Rini" in the Original Dub for being a mini-Serena, her original name is "Chibi-Usa", as she shares the heroine's name, but is smaller ("Chibi" in Japanese), hence takes a different name. The name really kind of bothers me, because that does NOT roll off the tongue in English- in Japanese, it's more like "Cheeb-YOUSA!", but in English, comes out "Chee-Bee-OOSE-ah!". This is one of those moments where they can get away with "Mini-usa" or something (it's not like they call their savior "Tuxedo Kamen", after all).

-Her childishness and arguing with Usagi is a source of a lot of the humor, and DOES get pretty clever (Chibi-Usa attacks Usagi in the tub while searching for the Silver Crystal; later she pisses on Usagi's bed by accident). Even the fact that her later appearances were done by super-cute Canadian voice actress Stephanie Beard, aka Sugar Baybee (who was remarkably hot for someone with the voice of a seven-year old) didn't help. Beard was a bit funny, as she was the ultra-cute host of YTV's The Zone programming block for a number of years, but then quit to become an actress in the States. And she vanished for years (save for one tiny commercial spot, only saying the word "Wicked!"), until all of a sudden popping up in a few things, like Garfunkel and Oats and showing the lion's share of the nudity in that ____ and ____ Need Wedding Dates movie.

-But really, she was quite annoying. The show became increasingly focused on her, the other Sailors didn't get as many focus episodes, and she continued to act like a selfish brat with poor judgement, at one point getting the Sailors captured because she ran off on her own. The villains spent most of the show trying to kill her, but then switched gears when her inner power (when frightened, she set off massive Energy Cylinders into the sky) revealed itself, and they aged her up into the "Black Lady" after giving her the world's lamest bout of brainwashing (they simply removed the memory of a Surprise Party, making her parents look like douches who ignored her birthday). The Sailor Moon equivalent of the "Care Bear Stare" is all it takes to bring her back to normal.

-Chibi-Usa soon reveals why she's been searching for the Legendary Silver Crystal- thinking it could save her mother, she went to grab it... and it disappeared. But it turns out the thing had been inside her all along, and when the Death Phantom nearly overtakes Princess Serenity... Chibi-Usa reveals her OWN Flowing Dress Super-Form, and the two Silver Crystals combined to extinguish the Death Phantom forever. With the day saved, Chibi-Usa begins to return home using her Time Travel Key, and finally comes to terms with modern-day Usagi, acknowledging her as her mother, and sharing a tearful goodbye. Not a bad ending, all in all. But it doesn't make up for "The Chibi-Usa Show" Sailor Moon became.

Sailor Moon S Notes:
-We really only got twelve episodes into the show before Chibi-Usa made her return, leaving Sailors Moon & Mars aghast upon seeing her, IN SAILOR FUKU, using Sailor Statements and more. The insane reason we get is that her mother (Sailor Moon in the future, remember) sends her back to regular Tokyo to get "training", which is pretty insane. The REAL reason, of course, is that the little girls reading the manga & watching the TV show were probably IN LOVE with the idea of someone their age engaging with these cool older girls (a similar reason was behind the creation of Robin in the Batman comics), and so she got riveted back on. Because really, what responsible parent would send their child back to face THE SILENCE? Of course... I guess she knew how that was gonna turn out, because... Time Travel.
-In any case, Chibi-Usa is now a SAILOR SENSHI, but thankfully, the show actually points out how stupid and useless she is. Like, she engages in the "Sailor Spiel" before battle, and the villain actually INTERRUPTS her, which has never happened to another character! And when she engages her "Pink Sugar Heart Attack!" technique... it fizzles out and does nothing! And when it DOES work, its range is so pathetic she literally has to WALK IT into the enemy! Little things like this went a long way to make this stupid idea into something funny and amusing. The character is never anything more than a distraction in combat (Daimons go "OW OW OW OW OW!" when the little hearts fire into their faces or asses or whatever), and her importance to the plot comes from an entirely different source.

-Yes, it's Chibi-Usa who discovers poor, innocent little Hotaru Tomoe. Hotaru is sickly and pale, and doesn't have any real friends, but of COURSE Usagi's daughter would have that special quality that sees lonely people for what they are, and befriends her. Hotaru is delighted to the point of tears to find someone who doesn't think they're weird. And it's Chibi-Usa who humanizes Hotaru, defends her against anyone picking on her, and more (she'd met a few friends earlier, but they're "Show-Only" characters who are soon "Urawa'd" into dis-use). And then it's Chibi-Usa's heart that is sacrificed to allow Hotaru to turn into the goddamn Messiah of Silence- Mistress! And this puts her out of commission for the remainder of the fights, so that this goofy little character can't detract from the seriousness of the situation.

-Honestly, full points for her use, here. They took what could have and SHOULD HAVE been the "RUINED FOREVER!" moment of the series, and actually got a hell of a lot of mileage out of both the jokes and the character use. I mean, imagine if Avatar: The Last Airbender had suddenly included a small child into the main cast and had her constantly pester the main charater and be annoying. It would have killed the show DEAD. But in Sailor Moon S, she was a lot less bratty than in the previous season (her arguments with Usagi are never as severe, for example, and she no longer gobbles up all of Mamoru's time), never overwhelmed the battles, and actually ADDS THINGS to the show, in her relationship with Hotaru.

Sailor Moon SuperS Notes:
-So, as I've said before, SuperS is the "Chibi-Moon Show" through and through. Here, she's effectively replaced Usagi as the main character, and most episodes are bookended by segments where she discovers a person's dream and talks about it with Pegasus, who has appeared to her in a chalice, and then ends with her talking about what she's learned about that person- thoughts of love, maturity, goals & desires, etc. This is INCREDIBLY controversial, and completely ruins the show if you ask a significant portion of the fanbase. To be fair, the character gets a whole lot less bratty as a result of this growing-up phase, but that kind of has the cost of removing some of what made the character more notable. Now she's just kind of a curious, well-meaning child. Getting an unnecessarily-long addition to the final "Attack Sequence" doesn't help- her "Twinkle Yell" summons Pegasus, whose only job is to empower Sailor Moon for the final hit. Yes, they waste 20 seconds per episode on her ringing a little bell, complete with doing a "strike a pose" freeze-frame in the middle of it.

-The entire season is also based around her friendship with Pegasus- she hides his existence from the other Sailors, having private conversations with him each night. She cries out things like "I don't want to enslave Pegasus or CONTROL him- I just want to be his FRIEND!". Yet before long, it becomes obvious they have feelings for each other, despite being different ages (and, until we learn otherwise, SPECIES), often blushing when thinking of each other. Then we learn Chibi-Usa's only dream is to "Become an adult", in a bit taken from the manga (she & Usagi switch ages and then some), which causes him to be all weirded out and run away (forget the Dead Moon Circus! Someone call Chris Hansen on him!). Eventually, after all of this (and some boring episodes focused on Chibi-Usa's classmates), the villains find out that her Dream Mirror hosts Pegasus- they attack, draw him out, and reveal his natural form- that of a young-ish boy. Chibi-Usa is rendered comatose and badly hurt to get Pegasus to give up, but when she recovers due to the last of his strength, she uses the "Clap If You Believe!" trick, crying out to Earth's people to renew their belief in their dreams- this allows the powering up of the Golden Crystal, weakening Queen Nehalennia's hold on the world. Thus the most powerless of the Sailors saves the day.

-Chibi-Usa was thus a more mature, fleshed-out character this time around, but also kind of a bland protagonist- almost an idealized "Mary Sue" for legions of little girls who now saw themselves as the character. And she remains an uncomfortable reminder that the show so many adults love has a target audience that's pre-pubescent, lol. It's like George Lucas & Star Wars, except the "It's for little kids!" thing isn't just an excuse for shitty storytelling and acting!

Sailor Chibi-Moon's Powers:
-Chibi-Usa is a pretty hopeless fighter- PL 4 defensively, and PL 6.5 with a weapon that can't even do anything more than annoy the foe. But it's effective enough as a "Set-Up" device that it's actually somewhat useful, even while the show makes it a gag. More than once, the villain is distracted enough by it to be killed. However, in Sailor Moon SuperS, this attack disappears, as does Luna-P- she makes up for it by adding more PRESENCE, Persuasion and other Skills that make her more well-rounded as a person.

PEGASUS (aka Helios, Guardian of Elysion)
Dub Name:
Pegasus/Helios
Role: The Pretty Boy Love Interest, Pretty Horsie, The Empowering One, Chris Hansen's New Target
Hair Colour: White

-Pegasus was the central figure for much of this season- the entirety of Sailor Moon SuperS was based around the villains trying to discover the Dream Mirror which held Pegasus. Early on, we're told this is just a "shadow" of the real being, but that whomever controls him will have total power. We'd also learn immediately that he was hiding within Chibi-Usa's Dream Mirror. This would lead to a recurring element where they would "Bookend" episodes by having Chibi-Usa talk to Pegasus about people she'd met that day, having questions about the nature of love, wants, needs, hard work, and more. The confused little girl would be reassured by the wiser Pegasus... yet it was clear that the two were slowly falling for each other. Which gets weird once we learn that he's thousands of years old.

-Finally, Pegasus reveals to Chibi-Usa what he truly is- the immortal ruler of the Land of Elysion- the realm where all of humanity's dreams are. This is the source of his power, and why Queen Nehalennia wants him- not just power, but the ability to gain her dream of being young and beautiful forever. It turns out that his real body (that of a fairly young boy) is imprisoned in the mirror with the Queen, and that Pegasus is his spirit, also holding the all-powerful Golden Crystal, powered by human dreams. Finally, however, the Dead Moon Circus discovers where he is, and trap both Pegasus & Chibi-Usa. Despondent, Helios gives up... but is given a talking-to by Mamoru, who carefully points out that he himself can still dream, so why can't anybody else? This convinces him and Chibi-Usa to reawaken the dreams of humanity, powering up the Crystal once more and defeating the Queen. Sadly, he cannot stay on Earth- his job is in Elysion. So he and Chibi-Usa say their goodbyes, embracing when everyone's distracted (so as not to embarrass the girl).

-Pegasus/Helios was... odd. He was mature, had a good design, and came off well. He added a bit too much "Stock Animation" to a show that was already infamously bad for it, but seemed okay. But him falling for Chibi-Usa will NEVER NOT BE WEIRD. Especially as he gets noticeably jealous when it turns out other boys like her, they move in for nuzzles and kisses, and he blushes when she takes her shirt off. I mean, Pedosus here is thousands of years old, despite looking like a kid.

Isn't chibi-usa also rediculously old despite looking and acting like a child? I think she's stated to be like 900 or something.

Not in Sailor Moon's anime, no- she's the child of Usagi & Mamoru, sent from the future for "training" (ie. putting her in mortal danger because she's the Fan Insert for little girls in the audience"). I dunno about the manga version, but I don't think so there, either.

Defenses:
Dodge +11 (DC 21), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +8

Complications:
Power Loss (All Powers)- Sailor Senshi must be able to gesture and speak freely to use their powers. If they are Bound or Snared, they cannot use their attacks easily.
Normal Identity (Mizuno Ami, Without Power Stick)
Responsibility (Sailor Senshi)- The Senshi are charged to fight evil, and protect Sailor Moon.
Responsibility (Schooling)
Secret (Identity)- The Senshi must not reveal their identities to the world at large, nor their villains.
---
Obsession (Grades)- Ami is a first-class, Type-A "Brain". School is her entire life, and she devotes almost all of her extra energy to it. Despite being a superhero and a teenage girl, she gets perfect scores (anything less than 100% is unacceptable), and goes to one of the city's top Cram Schools (a common feature in Japanese education).
Reputation (Stuck-Up)- Ami is a classic introvert, and her obsession with studying only furthers the void between her and other students. It is very easy for kids to assume that she is stuck-up and impolite, snobbishly refusing to deal with people. Only Usagi and a few others can cut through this facade. She pretends it doesn't hurt her, but she is emotionally ruined when rumors spread of her cheating on exams and having people authentically turn on her.
Secret (Closet Romantic)- Stoic, mature Ami seems very together, but if you look closely, she's often the one most moved to tears by actions of pure romance, such as the love between Usagi & Mamoru. It's adorable.
Phobia (Love Letters)- Ami breaks out in a rash when she sees them.
---
Relationship (Usagi)- Usagi was the one person to try and befriend Ami when she was the "stuck-up" new girl. As such, she is one of Usagi's strongest defenders, and frequently guards her against the jibes of villains... or teammates. Though she finds Usagi to be exceptionally lazy and a do-nothing scholastically, she takes care to be more of a teasing or embarrassed-lecturing type rather than a judgemental, vicious sort.
Relationship (Ryo Urawa)- The two shared a brief friendship that could have turned into something more- Ryo appeared to be a genius like her, and he definitely cared for her, but he refused to get close, believing himself to be a monster. Ami also ran from her feelings, afraid to get too close to someone. Ultimately, he was forced to move away. In Sailor Stars, she instead crushes on one of the Three Lights- the Smart One, of course.
Enemy (The Dark Kingdom, Ail & An, The Black Moon Clan, The Death Busters, Queen Nehellenia, Sailor Galaxia)

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 16 / Powers: 66 / Defenses: 19 (169)

Sailor Mercury- The Unsung Hero:
-Sailor Mercury is the most popular Sailor in Japan, given that she's a brilliant, studious (in a nation that HEAVILY rewards near-constant studying & cramming), kind-hearted, dutiful girl with no glaring personality flaws aside from a dull focus on her studies. Her biggest problem is her shyness, which makes her often seem rude or snobby to others, but she's usually just playing Straight Man to the antics of the other girls, bringing out the giant sweat-drops and generally sighing in the general direction of Rei & Usagi's tongue-waggling contests. Poor girl. She allows me to bring up one of my MAJOR pet peeves with the show (one of those things that's not dub-focused)- the fact that every girl would get these pontential male love interests, and you'd see them flirt, blush, mingle, etc., but then they'd go away forever and you'd never see them again. Mercury & Greg (Ryo Ozawa), a sweet, shy boy who could see the future, had a cute thing going on, but he only appeared in two episodes, and after that you almost never had Mercury-focused things except for once a season.

-Like most Sailors, Mercury had little of her personal life shown, and mainly bits from the manga & anime give us some look at her (this is one of the many ways the anime differs from standard comic books, which LOVE to introduce massive recurring casts of relatives). Her parents are divorced, and she lives with a serious, intelligent mother who's a doctor (which is Amy's career goal as well). Her father, a wandering artist, is mostly out of the picture (this happens A LOT on this show, as we'll soon see- Naoko Takeuchi apparently has a problem with father-figures being involved :)), occasionally sending Ami paintings. You literally only see her mother in the anime, and only in a side-view that doesn't even show her face, and it's ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTY ONE EPISODES before her father is even mentioned.

-Mercury doesn't stand out as much as her friends, since they're all such extreme personalities- Minako & Usagi are insane, Mako is super-aggressive, and Rei is just a snide bitch. Mercury is so stoic and regular that her & Luna end up the closest in personality, sharing sweat-drops expressions whenever Usagi and Rei... do Usagi & Rei stuff. The neat thing about her, however, is that she often appears to be such a closet romantic, mooning over the relationship of Usagi & Mamoru.

-Mercury was so popular in Japan that the bizarre live-action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon series featured HER as the "captured & turned evil by the Dark Kingdom" victim instead to Tuxedo Mask. Dark Mercury is pretty much the hottest thing ever, and I'm not even a real big fan of Mercury overall!

-Mercury's design caused a lot of shortcuts, as short hair is harder to draw well than long hair is- it's easy to under-detail it or make it TOO short or too long. You can always tell it's a "Good Art" episode because Ami doesn't just have a big dorky mushroom-cut or a round-hair thing going on- this one has big bangs on one side, multiple visible "bunches" of hair, a few loose bits on the back, and numerous strands in front of her foreheard. Her hair is normally where the weakest directors make cuts- the director who always gives people triangle-shaped eyes is known to give her the "non-detailed bowl cut".

Sailor Moon S Notes:
-Ami, the most popular Sailor to young girls, is given a lot of... well, academic-themed things to do this season. But this is actually the finest work Kate "Frankie Stein" Higgins has put into the show thus far. Here, Ami is lectured by her Vice-Principal about putting too much effort into helping "lower-end" students (ie. Usagi) study, and not enough on her own excellence. Ami actually has the grit to SCOLD HIM for this advice, but the idea makes her think about how she's defined too much by her studies. Like, that's ALL she has- even her friends just compliment her intelligence all the time. Is her dream to be a doctor even that sincere, or just her assumption that that's what a really smart person does? "People with TRUE dreams have a SHINE to them", she says.

-Usagi, who overheard Ami's conversation with the Vice-Principal, scolds the others and says "Studying is something you do by yourself!" when the girls start harassing Ami for scholastic help- hilariously, this causes FEAR in others, who are staggered that "Usagi... said something admirable!" Unfortunately, Usagi's obsession with Ami's studying just hurts Ami all the more, because her identity is so wrapped up in her grades. The ending is THE BEST, though- Ami renews her purpose to be her very best self... but when Usagi gets paranoid over her & Tuxedo Mask sharing a moment, Ami actually GRABS HIM and suggests she'll go for THAT, too! "You know I'll try my very best!" "No no no no no!!" AMAZING. You NEVER see Ami tease her friends like this!

-In her last Focus Episode, Ami meets Viluy in her civilian disguise as "the other girl who got a perfect score on the national practice exam", and she brags about how anyone with high marks is allowed to teach at the Academy. Ami, however, is DISGUSTED with the idea, as high marks alone shouldn't cut it- a good instructor has to be able to understand the feelings of even the students who are struggling! Viluy chides her for being "naive" and not sounding like the kind of person who could get a perfect score, and later, Mercury refuses to abandon Uranus & Neptune to the Witch, either. In a great ending bit, Haruka & Michiru stand before the Sailors, with Haruka saying "Ami Mizuno... your naivete has allowed the Messiah of Silence to escape. But it also saved us." Michiru adds that for now, they're very grateful to her. The VA's performance here was REALLY GOOD- her sadness and concern when she points out that "good grades don't necessarily mean you'll make a good INSTRUCTOR..." is pitch-perfect delivery.

Sailor Moon SuperS Notes:
-The whole "Ami is a Closet Romantic" thing becomes a HUGE element of her personality during SuperS, I think, as the writers sort of latch onto that after running out of "Ami is a good student/competitive" stories to tell. Here, she falls in love with the idea of a woman fixing up an old junker car that she & her husband were working on, and throws herself into helping. Later, she is entranced by a musician's song, and begins writing lyrics for it. At first too shy to drop them off (and blushing at the artist, perhaps forgetting poor Ozawa finally), she's actually more shamed by his passion for music, and how her "written just for fun" lyrics are probably way too humble and insincere compared to such a dream. Kate Higgins does a REALLY good job with the line reading here, by the way, her voice cracking with "I'm no ARTIST!"- it's neat that the smartest Sailor also has the least self-confidence and bravado. She is convinced to do so by an image of herself in a computer world (it tells her to accept who and what she's capable of, and to trust the feelings she felt), and he loves them. This episode features the debut of her most powerful attack- "Mercury Aqua Rhapsody", which plays off of her newfound appreciation for music, and actually gives her a real Blast for once. This episode also finally... FINALLY... gives us the explanation for why Ami's father is never around.

-Another cute one sees Ami rescue Shingo from the water, and he gets a schoolboy crush on her. Owing to her kindness to him, and her great maturity, it actually makes sense he'd take a liking to her over the others. The girls, of course, tease Ami and go "aawwww!" when he blushes ater she compliments him for acting as "bodyguard" to protect the girls from dorky guys hitting on them at the beach. Later, when Tiger's Eye hits on her, she rebuffs him, pointing out that "if God has a man in store for me, wouldn't I feel something the moment we met?" because despite her book-learnin', Ami is ROMANTIC AS BALLS, YO.

Mercury's Powers:
-Ain't nobody better talk smack on those Bubbles, though. Sailor Mercury was BITCHING in this show, as those infamous "Bubble Spray" attacks would 9 times out of 10 be the most effective Senshi attack. While they didn't ever do DAMAGE, they were exceptional at distracting enemies. And when the entire name of the game was "distract so Sailor Moon can hit her thing", that makes Mercury the most elite Sailor out there. Because EVERY TIME she hit that stupid thing, the enemy would stand out there like "D-uhh? What?", and be COMPLETELY DISTRACTED, allowing Sailor Moon to throw a Tiara or a Cutie Moon Rod or whatever. A few episodes even show the thing having Stun-like properties, as she once uses it to put a legion of animals to sleep, and another time causes some flying objects to drop.

-Ami/Mercury has the potential to be a VERY pricey Sailor Senshi- She's smart as hell (given an I.Q. of 300 in the anime, though this is actually impossible in real life), but doesn't actually seem to USE her smarts for anything, so she's light on the Skills for an INT 6 person (she's in fact one of the better examples of the "brilliant, but unskilled" type of genius- she doesn't invent stuff or hack databases, but she's generally intelligent and knowledgeable about everything). She's easily the worst fighter of all the Senshi, lacking ANY major combat abilities until Sailor Moon R (season two) aside from "making the area foggy", and she does the least amount of damage with just about every attack.
-Mercury's also quite clever in battle. In one episode, she TOTALLY fakes out Prince Endymion (a brainwashed servant of the Dark Kingdom), tricking him with her Bubbles, swiping the Dark Crystal from him, and then SHATTERING it, preventing its constant use as a Monster-Transformation Device from then on. She also targets the Illusion Caster of the head D.D. Girl, breaking it in a great sacrificial play, as she's defenseless against the merciless baddies afterwards.

-She's more or less a Status Affecter, freezing people in Snares, fogging up the area (sometimes linking the two), or merely hitting with Cold Blasts (Shine Aqua Illusion is a Blast/Snare- the manga/Sailor Moon Crystal-only "Shine Snow Illusion" is the same but a Burst). Her Concealment effects are Selective, making them pretty handy, and her later-series attacks (Mercury Aqua Rhapsody especially) are powerful +9-10 Blasts, which is a nice change. Shine Aqua Illusion is still her best attack, though- Blasting at +6 and Linking to an Ice Snare. Expensive, but worth it. In combat, she's still the worst Senshi (her Dodge & Parry are weak, and she's the lowest Toughness and worst fighter), but she's sort of the resident Skillmonkey.
-Of note is also her little Visor thingie, which often pops up and targets the enemies' weaknesses, as well as telling people whether or not things are illusions. This is basically Analytical Vision, plus Penetrates Concealment & Illusion.

-In Sailor Moon SuperS, Mercury finally gains a real Blast, and it pushes her up a notch into a PL 9. It's pretty standard-issue (though is Penetrating, like all the new attacks in this season), but considering most of her other stuff is Snares & Concealment Attacks, it's a pretty big deal for her. She gains a single notch each in her Ranged Combat & a new Writing Skill, too.

---
Relationship (Usagi)- Usagi was the one person to try and befriend Ami when she was the "stuck-up" new girl.

-The first season's Sailor Mercury has next to no offensive capability whatsoever, but still has the tactical power of the Bubble Spray.

Sorry, Jab, this time the rumors are correct. Chibi-Usa is stated (in the manga arc that inspires SuperS) to be over nine hundred years old, and no one in the future is quite sure why she hasn't aged to an adult in that time. It's just one of Takeuchi-sensei's weird notions. (Physically, she's apparently about 6 in R, and ~13 in SuperS.)

Weird. But the manga never made much sense to me anyhow- lots of weird stuff in that, like you said.

Complications:
Power Loss (All Powers)- Sailor Senshi must be able to gesture and speak freely to use their powers. If they are Bound or Snared, they cannot use their attacks easily.
Normal Identity (Hino Rei, Without Power Stick)
Responsibility (Sailor Senshi)- The Senshi are charged to fight evil, and protect Sailor Moon.
Responsibility (Schooling)
Secret (Identity)- The Senshi must not reveal their identities to the world at large, nor their villains.
---
Responsibility (Hikawa Shrine)- Rei is a miho (Shrine Maiden) at Hikawa, and lives there. The survivability of her shrine (via donations, people buying charms, etc.) is a major goal of hers.
Responsibility ("In the name of Mars, I will chastise you!")- Rei has an extraordinarily violent temper, leading her to massive freak-outs whenever people annoy her. The people who annoy her consist of her grandfather (a pervert), Usagi (a lazy slob) and Yuuichiro (an oaf), in addition to most everybody at least once. Anyone who doesn't reach her atmospheric expectations will be verbally chastised, and possibly struck with something.
Secret (Hard Worker)- Rei wants everyone to think that success comes easily to her, and that she never struggles. This is untrue- she works endless hours making sure everything is just right. She cannot take a compliment without blowing it off, as if her accomplishments are natural to her.
Secret (Giant Nerd)- Rei spends endless amounts of time lecturing Usagi for being a nerd and a fangirl, but is actually just as huge a fan of idols, fads and manga. She was quite embarrassed when, after insulting Usagi's obsession over meeting anime artists, her bag opened and revealed tons of autograph boards for them to sign.
---
Relationship (Usagi)- Rei is Usagi's biggest detractor- she finds Usagi mentally and emotionally-weak, lazy, spoiled, and incompetent. She hates that Usagi borrows her manga without asking, and makes constant mistakes. But ultimately, she considers Usagi her best friend, and will literally do anything to protect her.
Relationship (Grandfather)- Rei lives with her Grandfather at the Hikawa Shrine. Though she is frequently befuddled by his skirt-chasing and tomfoolery, she cares deeply for him, and tries to take care of him.
Relationship (Yuuichiro)- Rei is annoyed by the clumsy, awkward transient who comes to live at the shrine. Still, she admits that he is a cutie, and eventually comes to admire his sincerity and kindness, though she admits to others that she shares none of his romantic love for her.
Relationship (The Others)- Rei admires Ami's intelligence, but always wants her to join in lecturing Usagi. Mako & Minako are good friends, but they rarely have solo interactions.
Enemy (The Dark Kingdom, Ail & An, The Black Moon Clan, The Death Busters, Queen Nehellenia, Sailor Galaxia)

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 16 / Powers: 57 / Defenses: 14 (177)

Sailor Mars- Mrs. Jabroniville From 1995-1998:
-Sailor Mars is the embodiment of everything I ever found attractive in women- she's got insanely long, shiny black hair, dresses in a miniskirt and high heels, and acts in an imperious, demanding, controlling manner that consists of screaming at and belittling others. One episode of Sailor Moon R features her ordering around her Grandfather's assistant (who has a crush on her), forcing him to carry around hundreds of pounds of stuff she bought from a dozen different stores, and responds to his complaining by completely emasculating him, grumbling "You're supposed to be a man, aren't you?!?". Rei is AMAZING.

-Okay, so she's way too young. Technically every character in this Fanservicey show is ages too young for even a twenty-year old (this is even a plot point when Mamoru hooks up with Usagi). But of course the pervy animators draw everybody like they're leggy supermodels, so I declare it doesn't count. None of them look even CLOSE to their appropriate age, and the only real hint is in how short everybody is, and the size of their eyes (adult women in the show have longer, narrower eyes).

Sailor Mars- Best Character & Grumpy Dwarf:
-Mars is an immediate shot in the arm for the show, and perfectly represents the kind of character Grumpy was meant to be in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Grumpy was there to represent the cynics in the audience- if the writers were too afraid to have Snow White's singing come off as cheesy, there was Grumpy, crossing his arms in a huff, deriding it as "... MUSH!" For this show, Sailor Moon was hella-annoying, whiny and incompetent, right? Worthy of being made fun of, and she made for a weak protagonist. And so we have Sailor Mars- she's there to CALL USAGI OUT ON THAT, taking the viewpoint of people like me, accusing her of being an annoyance and a complainer. So suddenly we had a reason to keep watching. Plus, she did panty-shots.

-And of course, this provides the show with interpersonal conflict. Sailor Moon & Mercury got along too well, and even Jupiter did with them. With Sailor Mars, you have an antagonist within the group- the character Vidia became in the Disney Fairies movies. While everyone else got along, Rei was there to gripe at Usagi, and for Usagi to gripe back at in return. Though their arguments occasionally got TOO infantile (consisting of them sticking their tongues out and going "NYAAHHHHHHHHHHH!" endlessly, while the others just sighed), the show was a thousand times better as soon as Rei showed up.

-It's actually a Filler Episode from the Filler SEASON that best exemplified Rei as a character. In it, she's featured as the Queen Bee of her Junior High School, running a school festival essentially by herself, and capping things off with a musical performance of her very own songs. Great stuff, right? Except Rei, when complimented on this achievement by her impressed friends (even Usagi), basically blows off their statements, pointing out that this was EASY for her. She gladly tells her friends how easy writing all of those songs was, and how easily the melodies flowed from her fingertips. How LITTLE EFFORT she put into everything. And as she's telling them this, we see a series of shots of her tearing up sheets of music, angrily pounding on keyboard keys, and finally slumping over, defeated, with tears willing up in her eyes. THIS IS REI HINO. Hard-working, skilled, confident and proud... but she would rather DIE that let you think that things were difficult for her, or that she ever failed. She wants you to think this is EASY.

Sailor Mars- Study in Contradictions:
-Rei is a Shinto Priestess in the show- a miho who sells trinkets to tourists & city-goers who come by to pray. She divines things in the flames, tries to see the future, and tries to get readings on people. Yet she goes to a Catholic school, as it's the most expensive one around, and being Shinto doesn't necessarily mean you have no other religion, as that's mostly a spiritual/mental thing. She lives there with her Grandfather, and no parents are to be seen anywhere- it's never explained what happened to them.

-On one hand Rei is this serene Priestess, so pretty that she impresses all the other girls. And yet she's short-tempered, conceited and arrogant. When Mamoru shows up and starts insulting Usagi again, Rei basically falls in lust with him, hanging off of him and going on dates- suddenly, her arrogant facade falls away and she becomes a giddy schoolgirl, literally hanging off of him while he couldn't be more distant and uninterested- he's basically been railroaded into these dates. When her Grandfather lets in a young hobo as an apprentice and he falls for Rei immediately (I mean, WHO WOULDN'T?), she is disgusted by his oafishness and lack of social grace at the same time as she's attracted to his looks and his sincerity. So she spends the rest of her time stuck between insulting and emasculating him (urrgghhhh...), and inadvertently leading him on, such as kissing him when he does something heroic or kind (frequently, she even shocks herself with this). And that moment, when he helps them fight a monster in on the ski slopes and is badly beaten in the experience, she sweetly kisses him while he's unconscious, adding "... Idiot." MARRY ME, REIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII...!

Sailor Mars- The Closest One To Usagi:
-It says something about the skill of the writers that they successfully pulled off the bitchy Rei being the actual dearest friend of Usagi, given all the crap they say to each other. Yet time and time again, you see these little moments that show it. In one episode, Usagi actually gives Sailor Mars the Silver Crystal. Her reasoning? Because her true love, Endymion, is the slave of the Dark Kingdom, she's afraid they'll use him to get to her, and force her to give up the Crystal. Recognizing her own mental weakness in a rare moment of self-awareness, and her lack of spirit, she's afraid she'll be broken, and thus gives it to the one person (the sneering, hard-hearted Rei) who she can trust not to give in. And during the course of the episode, the villains capture Sailor Moon anyways, and begin beating her to get her to reveal the location of the Silver Crystal. And she refuses, of course. Sailor Mars sits back in hiding, surely keeping the Crystal safe. And the torture continues, with Usagi screaming in pain. And Mars starts to tear up. And shudder. And shake. And eventually she BREAKS, coming running to Sailor Moon's aid. Because THEY LOVE EACH OTHER, DAMMIT.

-And despite her huge schoolgirl crush on Mamoru? The second she sees that he and Usagi were long-lost lovers and Destined Forever, she steps aside. She tears up when Mamoru dies, and VICIOUSLY slaps Sailor Moon for offering to give up- "Do you want his sacrifice to become meaningless!?!", but ultimately she lets Usagi have the boy she likes. When Usagi is still crushed an episode later, it's actually REI who's the most sympathetic! Many later episodes show the same thing- when Usagi is dumped by Mamoru and emotionally-shattered by it, Rei for once drops the high & mighty attitude, and tenderly consoles the heartbroken young girl. She knows this is no time to be nasty.

-And of course the finale of the first season. They've just watched their three best friends die in battle against the villains. Sailors Mars & Moon are the only two left. And Usagi, basically shell-shocked, wants to turn back. Mars won't let her. But instead of screaming at her for her weakness, she just smiles and points out that they have to keep fighting. And decides to hold back and fight the last two DD Girls by herself. Sailor Moon refuses, tears streaming down her face, not wanting her last friend to die. Mars simply responds that she won't (even though she knows it's likely), suggests that "you're right. Maybe I should have kissed Yuuichiro after all" in a fatalistic sense, then goes on to fight the monsters herself. And she is horribly beaten, screaming as she's fatally-wounded by the monsters. One "Fire Soul" attack kills a DD Girl as it leaps out at Sailor Moon, but the remaining one taunts the girl. She prepares for one last, lethal attack as Mars is slumped over beside her... but Mars grabs her wing. And the monster looks down. And Rei just peers up, battle-damage all over her face. And she just says "I'm... not... done... yet... Fire... Soul...!" The monster can only scream, as fire bursts from Rei's hand, immolating her. And this takes a WHILE- this bitch dies in AGONY. And Sailor Mars dies, shattering Sailor Moon once and for all. This is basically up there with Optimus Prime in terms of death scenes. Hell, it's BETTER. Just the sheer defiance and fury of Mars is one of the greatest moments anything has ever had. This is "Zuko in Iroh's Tent" good, here.

-This is exemplified around the series finale, when the Sailors are killed by Sailor Galaxia's agents. Who does Usagi run to in those final moments? OF COURSE.

Sailor Mars- Manga Version:
-Sailor Mars in the manga is an incredibly different character. Humorously, she's instead this serene, noble, stoic character, free from emotional outbursts. She & Sailor Venus are the leaders of the Sailor Senshi. There's a neat one-off where she finally details her thoughts on men- she considers them mentally-weak, untrustworthy and not worth her time (is there ANY VERSION where she isn't my dream girl?!?)... except for one young man. The student of her father (and mentor/student stuff is Serious Business in Japanese culture), he is kind to her always, and she finds herself falling for him as she gets older- he takes charge during most of her yearly meetings with her distant, ambitious father (a politician whom she despises, as she feels that he abandoned her mother, who died young). But at the end, he confesses that her father has set him up with another woman in a political marriage to help further his career- Rei is angered and disgusted ("If you wanted a political marriage, you would have married ME"), but instead recalls her past self promising a vow of chastity to Princess Serenity, and so makes the same promise in modern times.

-So basically an entirely different person. Still kind of fun in a way, but a lot less prone to the character moments that defined the early cartoon so much. Most of Naoko's Senshi seemed quite stoic and dull compared to the extreme personalities seen in the original cartoon anyhow.

Sailor Moon SuperS Notes:
-Sailor Mars gets a mandatory pair of episodes in SuperS, though sadly they're not quite as intently focused upon her. In the first one, she ends up keeping Mamoru at her shrine after his apartment is badly damaged (naturally, by Usagi). However, this makes Usagi INSANELY JEALOUS, particularly since Rei & Mamo used to date, so she creeps about and bothers Rei about it- this gets worse when an embarrassed Rei sees Mamo's bare ass when he gets into the tub. Meanwhile, Yuuichiro, in love with Rei, suddenly becomse sinister and plotting due to Mamo's presence... and her grandfather is instead DELIGHTED that this strong, young heir is spending time around, and tries to get them together. It's a heckuva comedic episode, and shows us a very different side of Rei (she's usually either pratfalling or raging, not being shy or embarrassed- "I didn't see it because I WANTED to!"), though mostly based around a hapless Rei having to deal with other people- it also serves as the final Yuuichiro episode, which is unfortunate, as it's mostly Rei getting frustrated by him (Katie Griffin, Rei's original Western V.A., was quite saddened to find out "Raye and Chad" didn't end up together).

-The second episode is a bit of a strange one, as Rei is featured in a teen magazine as a kind of "everyday person who is cool" kind of thing, which soon brings in an admirer- a little girl who promptly becomes a Mini-Rei. While Rei is flattered and a bit embarrassed before (naturally, because it's Rei) letting it go to her head, she gets PISSED when she discovers it's only because the kid lacked a dream or ambition of her own (it turns out later that the girl simply has low self-esteem, and gave up on her difficult dream of being a jet-setter... which is Rei's actual dream, too), and simply latched onto Rei's "Shrine Maiden" dream (which isn't even Rei's actual ambition- she confesses to Usagi that she has dozens of things she wants to do) as one of her own. When the poor kid hears Rei going all "It's an insult to the profession! I don't want her around!", she runs away all hurt, and ends up trying to forge her own path in the end. The best parts are the girls, annoyed at the attention Rei is getting, crack wise about how "If those love charms actually worked... then Rei SHOULD HAVE HAD A BOYFRIEND AGES AGO, HAHAHAHAHA!". Rei ends up gaining her new power, at least.

Sailor Mars's Stats:
-Sailor Mars is much like Sailor Venus- a mid-level, fairly accurate Blaster, though she's a more varied combatant, owing to her regular Multiattack move, and her great "Stun the enemy with paper" stunt. That thing nearly ALWAYS WORKS, and it consists of her doing a Shinto prayer with a piece of paper in front of her (an ofuda paper with Japanese writing on it), then sticking it onto the enemy's forehead. Their reaction is always this "W-ahhhh?" bit of confusion, leading to an immediate attack from another- usually Sailor Moon. This attack even trumped Jadeite, who was so stunned that he was left unaware of one of his moving AIRPLANES comings towards him- he looked pretty messed-up the next time we saw him.

-Her final attack is attained in Sailor Moon SuperS- "Mars Flame Sniper!", a powerful single arrow (though sometimes manifesting as multiples) that... never seems to really kill off anyone short of total mooks.

Sailor Moon S Notes:
-This season begins with foreboding from Rei, the only one of the Inner Sailors who can feel dark energy, or see the future. However, she keeps this to herself for the most part, not realizing the gravity of the situation until Uranus & Neptune reveal what those visions MEAN. Rei is actually the very FIRST person attacked in S, and where we find out that removing someone's Heart Crystal will KILL THEM before too long- in another one of those great moments that show Usagi's true feelings for her friends, she's absolutely shattered at the thought of losing Rei, screaming, begging and pleading the villains to let her live.

-Here is the famous (to the fandom) scene where Rei nervously gives Usagi the list of her dreams- she wants to be a Voice Actress and more... and then shyly adds "and the wife of someone I love". SOOOOOOOOOOOO CUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUTE. She also witnesses Yuichiro's attempt to leave the Shrine for good- though she has no romantic feelings for him, the thought of losing a kind friend like him leaves her SO wiped out emotionally. The ending is perfect, as Yuichiro returns after a misunderstanding, and Rei cares for his injured body... while teasing him repeatedly for buying cheap gifts, picking fights, and being stupid, THEN demands he lean on her when he walks. UGH THAT GIRL.

-The next "Rei Episode" features the girls spying on Rei while she tries to recruit a drummer for a big Shinto festival, which mostly consists of the girls pestering her and being snoopy. It mostly leads to a lot of sight gags, such as Rei's "wide-eyed stare" look (complete with "pupilless eyes"- a big "this person is crazy/dead/monstrous" trope in anime), or getting coffee poured on her.

-All in all, Rei arguably gets the least focus and interesting character-stuff to do this season, though three episodes featured pretty solid focus on her. It's just that the others got MORE. Overall, I see that her character has softened a little bit- her arguing with Usagi is more along the lines of "gentle friendly teasing" than sheer hostility. Rei is thus more likely to just fold her hands behind her head and make a comment with a little smirk that go "You are such a lazy imbecile, Usagi!" and get into a screaming match- typically, this is just as annoying to Usagi, but it comes off a little bit less like Rei despises her :). A great "backhanded compliment" is in the very first episode, as Rei cracks wise that "Mamoru would be disappointed if he saw your grades, but academics aren't everything. Stay positive- it's the one thing you've got going!".

Defenses:
Dodge +11 (DC 21), Parry +11 (DC 21), Toughness +5, Fortitude +6, Will +7

Complications (Early):
Power Loss (All Powers)- Sailor Senshi must be able to gesture and speak freely to use their powers. If they are Bound or Snared, they cannot use their attacks easily.
Normal Identity (Kino Makoto, Without Power Stick)
Responsibility (Sailor Senshi)- The Senshi are forced to fight evil, and protect Sailor Moon.
Responsibility (Schooling)
Secret (Identity)- The Senshi must not reveal their identities to the world at large, nor their villains.
Enemy (Current Big Bad)
---
Responsibility (Temper)- Jupiter is the most easily-angered of the Sailors, and is always the first one to attack. She often over-uses All-Out & Power Attack, robbing her of needed defenses. She is quite often the first Sailor taken down.
Relationship (Usagi)- Makoto Kino doesn't make friends easily- she is tough, brassy, intimidating and insular. It took a weak schoolgirl to break through her defenses and make friends one day, and this changed her life. Mako does not forget this, and is always the first one to spring to Sailor Moon's defense, whether against Sailor Mars, or an enemy.
Relationship (The Other Sailors)- Jupiter is quite close to the other Sailors, but especially Venus. Mars is too proud, and Mercury too bright, to get involved with too many shenanigans.
Obsession (Old Sempai/Upperclassman)- Lita was dumped by an Upperclassman at her old school (named "Freddie" in the Original Dub), and his memory drives her to this day. Any handsome guy will instantly remind her of her old B.F. Regardless of his appearance, demeanor, hobbies, or manner of dress.
---
Obsession (Boys)- Makoto/Lita is boy-crazy like the other girls, but often focuses laser-like on one particular target at a time. A desperate, hopeless romantic, she so shamelessly falls in love with someone at first sight that she can be easily manipulated and hang on endlessly, to the point where even young children give he pitying looks.
Relationship (Motoki)- Motoki is the only crush of Lita's that goes on for a significant period of time. It gets to the point where she tries to interject in his relationship with Reika, who plans to travel abroad for schooling.
Reputation (Bully and Delinquent)- Word got out that Mako was kicked out of her old school for fighting, and her curly hair and "giant size" (5'7"!?!?!!?!?) makes everyone think she's a ruffian.
Responsibility (Masculinity & Femininity)- Mako is a study in contrasts- the most brawl-happy and combat-ready of the Sailors, she is also the most domestically-gifted by far.

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 46--23 / Advantages: 23 / Powers: 58 / Defenses: 17 (171)

Sailor Jupiter- The Toughest and Girliest Sailor:
-Sailor Jupiter is just such an incredibly cool, distinct character- one of the most underrated ones out there. A ton of girls I know grew up LOVING her, and I think it all comes down to her basic nature: She is equal parts the most masculine AND the most feminine of the early Sailor Senshi. I mean, she stands out because she's a giantess (in Japan, being 5'7" as a teenage girl is TITANIC), she threatens people, she gets pissed off extremely easily, she beats the shit out of bullies that harass her friends, and she's got the most damaging attacks other than Usagi's. And yet... she wears flower earrings, has flowing bangs and a ponytail, obsessively cleans, gets crushes on boys easily, and is the greatest cook in the land. She's basically what so many girls dream of becoming- tough, strong and cool... but sacrificing ZERO femininity to get there. And as time goes on, we see more and more of her desperate desire for love- she becomes one of the most sympathetic girls over the years.

Jupiter's Debut:
-Jupiter debuts as a tough girl who was thrown out of her old school for fighting- her violent reputation makes everyone avoid her. However, when she beats the hell out of a trio of toughs who threaten clumsy Usagi for running into their pal, Usagi becomes interested, ignores all of the nay-sayers, and makes an effort to make a new friend. This endears her to the tough Makoto Kino, who hangs out with her from then on, and ALWAYS defends her against others. Soon, she's revealed to be Sailor Jupiter, and proves to be so devoted to kicking ass that she is able to kick ass without transforming, proving it by picking up the Game Machine Man and throwing his ass across the yard before getting her Transformation Pen.

-But while she's this tough, hardcore Fighter-Chick, Mako is also an extremely feminine character- she is a delicate homemaker, taking special care in making numerous special treats at school. Usagi is of course in love with that. And Mako proves her femininity yet again the second a handsome boy shows up- lights in the sky, sparkles in her eyes, and flushing at the cheeks, she moons over Joe the Crane-Game Troll, falling head over heels immediately. "He's just like my sempai!" she warbles, lovingly recalling the older boy who broke her heart (Sempai is Japanese for a person who's older/above you in status). She follows him around endlessly (even when he talks about how "Giant girls like her aren't my type!" ("that's just what HE used to say!"), acts hurt when he doesn't like her, and right when she gets over it... she sees a new boy, and decides to chase after HIM. Jupiter is awesome.

Jupiter in the Show:
-This sets up a lot of running gags- Jupiter is hilariously defensive of Usagi, backing her up against Sailor Mars and others. Anyone outside of her circle who mocks one of them... dies. Yet every single time she meets a new handsome boy, she gets the same reaction- "he's just like my sempai!" She openly crushes on nice-guy Motoki, thus acting as an antagonist to Usagi as they scheme to win his heart. She moons over an ice skater who turns into a Monster, alongside his girlfriend. There's a fun episode where she tries to manipulate Motoki's girlfriend into leaving the country, but ends up cheering them on regardless. But admits that she'll hopefully still be able to win him over.

-Mako is also an effective "ridealong buddy" for Usagi- Ami is too level-headed to join in on shenanigans, and Rei too aloof and proud (she goes along in secret). Mako is just as immature, scholastically-impaired, and boy-crazy as Usagi is at times, so it's fun watching them kind of pair off and act like goofs about their failures. This gives Usagi a partner in crime that works better than the more-normal Naru, who eventually takes a seat.

-Susan Roman's performance of Jupiter is considered the only universally-liked aspect of the Original Dub of Sailor Moon- it's the only thing a "Dubbie" can say in a group of "Subbies" and not have them get their neckbeards into a twist over it. Her dramatic, raspy, breathey voice gave a fun air to the character, easily her finest work (the only other role I know her from is Hanna Dundee in Cadillacs & Dinosaurs, aka "How can a Post-Apocalyptic Show featuring classic cars and f*cking DINOSAURS be so goddamned boring?"). The New Dub version seems to put some effort into matching Roman's delivery a little bit, too.

Jupiter's Talent:
-Jupiter became infamous in the series due to an odd bit of dubbing. See, in the R episode where they're competing over who gets to play Snow White in the play they're putting on, they throw out various excuses as to why they should play the lead (Ami wants the role because she sleeps for much of it, and has fewer lines to memorize)- Jupiter's is, naturally, that she should get the role because she has the biggest breasts. Despite this FLAWLESS LOGIC, the Original Dub decided this wasn't appropes, and so had the dialogue altered to "I have the most experience with acting", which turned into "The most TALENT!" in a later argument. Except they not only kept the motion towards her breasts when she said it, but the "boing!" sound effect at the same time! Henceforth, Sailor Jupiter, the bustiest of the Sailors, was always referred to by the fandom as "the most Talented" due to in in-joke (internet fans by this point were QUITE familiar with the original dialogue).

Jupiter as Time Goes Along:
-The show really glosses over her family life- in the manga, it's stated that her parents were killed in a plane crash, giving her a phobia of airplanes (she actually runs and hides when she sees them). And unfortunately she takes a bit of a back-seat after a point- in Sailor Moon R, she once has to share a Focus Episode/New Power Revelation Episode with Sailor Venus, in a move that made me think the two were paired off separately from "the Main Three". They did give her some new backstory in R, though, with her talking about her old, platonic friend Kenji, and how their relationship was "closer than romance".

Sailor Moon SuperS Notes:
-In one episode, Makoto finds YET ANOTHER age-old friend from way back, as it turns out that despite being a huge loner with no friends, she befriended Tomoko, a starry-eyed writer who has since gone on to incredible fame thanks to a novel she wrote. Naturally, their backstory involves Mako terrorizing some bullies who were picking on the girl. However, suffering from writer's block and feeling pressured by both fans and publishers to create a new work, Tomoko's become isolated and fearful that she'll never match up to old expectations. It takes Mako's defiant "your story belongs to the world now- it's your responsibility to them to continue!". There's some neat bits, like Tomoko running away from Mako in tears, and Mako's mixed feelings at reconnecting with an old friend she had basically been ignoring for her cooler superhero buddies. But then of course we never see this neat character again, because Makoto has clearly chained her up in the same basement that holds Kenji Shinozake :).

-In one popular episode for shippers, Makoto goes to a much-ballyhooed college dance that's famous for people forming couples. Desperate for a boyfriend, she's ignored because of her height, and weakly blows it off to Ami that she's used to this rejection- it's so neat how she's clearly hurt by this, but really doesn't want anyone to know it, so she acts like she's laughing it off. But Ami Mizuno and her good, GOOD heart goes out there and says "May I have this dance, then?" and the two run off and laugh on the dance floor. Adorbz. They dance well enough that Tiger's Eye notices her, and asks for the next dance. And... ohhh... oh, MAKO. You poor, sad, naive girl. Of COURSE she's got stars in her quivering eyes. MAKO STOP BLUSHING!! STOP PICTURING THE TWO OF YOU DANCING AT A ROMANTIC BALL, ALL WEARING WHITE!! Dammit, girl- you and your romantic heart.

-awwwwwwww and then T.E. is all "lol I tossed in a sprat and caught a whale" because now all the OTHER girls want to dance with him. And Mako just kind of looks on, all innocent and confused, asking politely if they can dance again? JESUS. And then she decides to wait ALL NIGHT in case he comes for one more dance, and Usagi later finds out that she didn't even GO HOME because "I'd never forgive myself if he came by" while she was gone. Even Chibi-Usa is like "Oh, MAKO..." about this. Like, holy crap. And the girls resolve that they're just going to wait there WITH Mako, so she doesn't have to go it alone, because friendship is beautiful and I'M NOT CRYING, YOU'RE CRYING.

-It gets to the point where when Tiger's Eye shows up again, realizing she was the target he was supposed to be after and he ignored her too quickly, but gets flustered when she fawns over him. Even HE scolds her for trusting him so quickly! And just when she learns something about "Maybe it was just the dancing ITSELF I was in love with...", she hears about ANOTHER dance, and immediately runs off to enter it while the other girls just plotz.

-Tragically and shamefully, Jupiter is stuck sharing her next Focus Episode with Venus again- here, Venus fails at her Idol thing yet again, and blurts out that it's easy for MAKO, because her dream is so basic and achievable by contrast. Makoto is rightfully offended at this, as it completely disregards all the years of learning and effort it took to get to her level, and how hard she'll still have to work for it. She yells at Minako, and eventually has to be convinced to meet up and have a heart-to-heart. Though the two at least know each other well enough that they quickly come to terms. One of the funnier bits of the season also sees Mako act like a doofus at the thought of Chibi-Usa having a boyfriend, insisting repeatedly that he "must be older" because she's projecting about senpais again.

Jupiter's Stats:
-Jupiter is built a fair bit differently from her allies. While everyone gets boosts into more physically powerful women fighters, Jupiter becomes REALLY strong and tough, meeting +6 in physical stats, and being very good in melee. She's the only Senshi to be PL 8.5 in melee at all, and has a few more options in combat. Otherwise, she's an ideal Blaster, hitting with tons of Lightning-based attacks (while most Senshi hooked up with one key element, Jupiter left Wood mostly behind and stuck with the lightning of her Planet's namesake except for her final form's attack) in various Areas (the Supreme Thunder Dragon is a particularly horrific example, as it can independently haul ass after a target, but is Tiring to pull off, since she only used it ONCE, in the "let's fill space" arc in Sailor Moon R).

-Jupiter's attacks end up a bit different in the end, as she gets a sudden love of plants (fitting her other "feminine" hobbies, I guess), and she debuts "Jupiter Oak Evolution!", a spinning pirouette that sends out tons of green energy balls in a Multiattack. This fits the manga more, as Jupiter had a lot of wood-themed attacks, owing to wood (not electricity, as in the West) being seen as an element of its own.

Obsession (Boys)- Makoto/Lita is boy-crazy like the other girls, but often focuses laser-like on one particular target at a time.

Sailor Moon S Notes:
-This season is mainly important for Mako fans (she doesn't really get up to too much) because of her iconic lesbian-esque obsession with Haruka. See, the early gag with Haruka is that she's such a masculine woman that the girls are all smitten with this "handsome" new boy, and kind of ogle "him" until the truth comes out. Mako of course does the "He's just like my senpai" thing, as always. But Mako then KEEPS IT GOING, ever after the truth comes out, to the point where the girls actually think she's a lesbian ("There are lots of great guys out there!" Mars insists, trying to draw Mako back to the peen-loving side). Mako, starry-eyed and BLUSHING, finally confesses that she's just obsessed with Haruka's COOLNESS, and was hanging around her like a lovesick puppy trying to pick up on what makes Haruka so confident, tough and strong. It's believable, in a way, given that Mako's always been the Team Powerhouse, and a bit self-conscious of her masculine traits- someone being so self-assured about the same tendencies would definitely be appealing to her.

-Sadly, this episode also gives Jupiter a prominent beat-down, as Sailor Uranus effortlessly one-punches her in the gut, dropping her to the ground. At least they manage to have a scratch on her arm (... from what, I wonder?), adding "She's strong!", to not leave Jupiter COMPLETELY humiliated. But needless to say, Uranus has now COMPLETELY trumped Jupiter as "The Bad-Ass Sailor", which is a bit of a shame, but an interesting character note.

-This can actually be related to the other "Jupiter Focus Episode", as she's shown getting trounced by a Daimon early in the ep, and goes off on a training mission with some Karate Master in the mountains. You can really by her shaken confidence; her lack of assurance that she's a big part of the team any longer- she doesn't SAY it, but I think the more-powerful new Sailors make her feel inadequate. Jupiter's reaction to single-handedly killing the Daimon is SO BEAUTIFUL- she's just absolutely overjoyed to the point of tears that she's succeeded, and you feel SO good for her.

-Funnily enough, in the manga, Jupiter's only reaction to Haruka is to think she's "handsome", and upon finding out the truth, spends the rest of the time complaining about how annoying Uranus & Neptune's unhelpful behavior is. Just another thing that the show ran away with (an offhand gag about "He looks just like my senpai" becomes Mako's identifiable Character Meme in the show).

-Also, at one point, Makoto is wearing a tight white minidress with thigh-high blue boots. I feel the need to mention that.

I mean, she stands out because she's a

Sailor V- From Upstart Manga to Additional Cast Member:
-Sailor Venus was the toughest "fit" into the Sailor Moon cast, and took the longest to be normalized. Problematically, she started life as "Sailor V", from a manga of the same name, by the same creator- Naoko Takeuchi essentially had a pretty popular little deal with Sailor V, and took the entire concept and shifted it a bit (mineral-themed villains, a talking cat sidekick, called attacks, etc.) for Sailor Moon, which ended up as a sequel. And so with Sailor V joining THAT cast... suddenly we had two characters with more or less the same personality, as Moon was essentially the same kind of character as V- a giddy, crush-having schoolgirl. They even had the same family- a group based off of Naoko's own!

-This heavily contrasts the manga, in which Venus was the actual straight-up LEADER of the Sailor Senshi, packing a dangerous sword and probably being the best overall fighter. "Serious Venus" was around for quite some time, as the others had been around for so long and had so much time to develop their relationships, so there was less time for her.

Sailor Venus- The Final Inner Senshi:
-This was made worse by the timing- Sailor Venus actually didn't make her debut until Episode #33, and the first season only lasted thirteen more episodes! Up until that point, Sailor V was just some silly thing the girls were all obsessed with, with episodes featuring her arcade games, her upcoming movie, etc. There isn't even any indication that she's a REAL PERSON, and nobody ever makes a connection otherwise. And right after she debuts is when Zoisite is killed, Sailor Moon is revealed to be the Moon Princess, and Mamoru/Endymion is kidnapped and brainwashed! There's so much stuff going on that her characterization has to kind of fall by the wayside.

-This left Sailor Venus (as she was renamed) in a tough spot- the anime creators either had her as the most serious, mature Sailor, or the silliest- she's a bit normal in her civilian form, but in the "Countess Trains Girls To Be Princesses" episode, she's dancing with her partner as if she was a kindergartener, pumping her arms with her eyes closed! And the later seasons seem to kind of blow poor Minako off- in a few Sailor Moon R episodes, she's actually stuck SHARING Focus Episodes with Sailor Jupiter- one of them shows the two like they've paired off as a regular duo, arguing over some silly thing like friends do.

Her Past Explained:
-The Original Dub was extremely weird with her, too- the whole Sailor V/Sailor Venus thing is literally NEVER EXPLAINED, and she just pops up one day as Sailor Venus, despite numerous episodes having featured Sailor V stuff heavily. Things were made worse by her biggest Focus Episode being left out of the airing, as it deals with her "Sailor V" past. Minako's old friend Katarina (who's hooked up with Minako's old crush, Allan, from back when they all lived in England...) arrives under the sway of Kunzite, and becomes the monster Papillon (Butterfly) in order to kill Minako. Usagi helps out (magically able to pilot boats when her Disguise Pen transforms her into an ACTUAL Sailor), and soon we get the backstory- Minako & Katarina were partners, fighting crime and Monsters in England back when Minako was just Sailor V. Minako was in love with Allan, but when she found out that Allan & Katarina were in love, she allowed them to believe that she was killed in a blast. Sailor Moon thinks Venus should be SUPER-bitter and hate them, but the more-mature Venus insists Katarina's not EVIL or anything, and convinces Sailor Moon to use the Healing Activation to cure Katarina of the Dark Kingdom's brainwashing. The final summation: Venus is the most-mature of the Sailors.

-Of course, THAT'd go away once she became the "Idol singer-obsessed" one of the bunch. It was a nice showcasing of the old Sailor V manga. But it's REALLY weird that this "Allan" guy was the key to much of the backstory, but didn't even actually APPEAR- he was just in the flashbacks!

Venus Becomes Set In Stone:
-Eventually, the writers would give up on her "maturity" and just turn her into the wackiest, goofballiest, Idol-obsessed Sailor. This became finalized in the episode where she takes care of the other girls, who've all come down with colds. "Nurse Venus" begins taking care of them in increasingly-horrible ways, eventually driving Mercury, Mars & Jupiter crazy with her incompetent care (Mars is fed a soup full of salt, then has music blared at her at maximum volume). This goofy version of Venus went over so well with the writers, directors and fans that that it pretty much instantly became the "Iconic Venus", as Venus Fans almost always cite it as their favorite episode. It's a bit odd to see the "Weird, Idol-Obsessed One" in a show where SAILOR MOON is the main character, but that was always kind of my issue with the character- I could never figure out Venus Fans, because to me, it was like cheering on the one character who was basically like the main character, but moreso. But I think her becoming more and more off the wall struck a chord with people, as there was more freedom to be odd.

Sailor Moon SuperS Notes:
-Alas, in Sailor Moon SuperS, Mina was stuck SHARING WITH MAKO again, so only got one solo episode. It was a funny one, though- with both Tiger's Eye AND Hawk's Eye after her Dream Mirror, she shamelessly dates both men, thinking she's pulling a fast one. While her teammates scold her for two-timing, the two generals reveal they're in on her scheme, but are still competing to see who can seduce her first. With Artemis disappointed in her lack of focus on the mission, she manages to pull an "Archie Andrews" and makde two dates for the same time! This results in the classic "Comedy of Errors", as she tears across the land in her attempts to go on both dates at once, while trying to keep the boys guessing. It goes about as well as you'd expect. And, as expected, Minako learns NOTHING, and says she likes both men... and then when they capture her and look into her dreams, both are horrified ("This girl is too much!" is translated into English as "I need a SHOWER!").

-And then, furious over her "pure feelings" being trampled, Venus breaks free from her bonds through sheer willpower ("Scary!", Artemis shouts) and throws out a "Crescent Beam Barrage" (a Multiattacked version of her Season One attack). In the end, Minako feels a bit morose, staring into the night sky- "I can't believe I let them play me like that" and wonders if she'll ever find true love. Artemis teases her with "I think you were playing them pretty well in return", then suggests that love may be something she comes across after many experiences. A neat little ending that kind of makes me wish this season had more of that kind of stuff.

-In her final Focus Episode this season, she offends Makoto by babying out over her "Idol Dreams" failing and pointing out that Mako's dreams are "So much easier", disregarding the hard work her friend has put into her own dreams. This leads to a brief split, but Minako finally matures a bit and apologizes. "Minako As Idol", debuting in Sailor Moon S, appears to become cemented here, and that actually sticks to her as much as "Venus the Nutjob" does.

Venus's Stats:
-Sailor Venus is a pretty "typical Sailor"- fast and Blast-y. Faster than she is tough, she eventually packs some serious firepower, using multiple variations of her base power and the Snares from her Love-Me Chain. The basic Chain is really just a Blast, much like the Crescent Beam, but I figure it's stronger since she dropped the Beam almost entirely once she got the Chain attack. She also uses the one-off R technique "Crescent Meteor Shower"- a Multiattack Tiring Blast, or can alternately use the Chain as a Snare or a Move Object (in a one-off episode, she grabs a boulder with it and moves it out of the way- something she could never do unarmed). "Venus Love & Beauty Shock" is another Multiattack Blats, throwing out a ton of hearts that bust up the enemies in wide swaths.

Sailor Moon S Notes:
-S really seems to be "Sailor Venus's Coming Out Party"- it gives her more focus than ever, finishes defining her as "the weird, childlike one", and even gives her more backstory. Early on, it's revealed that she was once a major volleyball star, and a lower-level boy had a crush on her. This realization kind of startles her- it makes her realize how much she gave up to be Sailor V, reconsider the focus it has in her life, and makes her think of giving up that life for good. Ultimately, seeing her friends in danger, and realizing the boy actually HAD a girlfriend this time around (she'd interpreted his admission that he wanted to wait to ask her out until they were equals as him saying he STILL liked her), causes her to rejoin the fight, even using her trademark "Serve Return!" technique to defeat the Volleyball-Themed Daimon. She basically confesses to herself that "I am a Sailor Guardian, and there are things that only I can protect", accepting her role in life. And in a cute moment, Artemis (who'd been flabbergasted by her behavior thus far, not understanding the teenage girl mind) gives her a bouquet of roses and asks "will you be my date tonight?"

-Probably her greatest moment is the 109th episode, where she starts to worry about the fact that she hasn't been targetted for her Pure Heart Crystal yet. She obsesses over it to excess- donating dangerous amounts of blood to prove her pure-heartedness, getting equally introspective and manic. And then finally gets her wish- her Heart Crystal is removed! And then, in the greatest bit EVER, she lurches forward like a zombie, grasps the heart... AND RUNS AWAY WITH IT, cackling about how this proves she was pure-hearted after all! Usagi and Eudial are aghast and have to friggin' chase after the lunatic. Minako finally collapses with an exhausted smile on her face, and we can get down to actually fighting the villain.

-Finally, she gets a Focus Episode based around her "Idol Singer" ideal, which becomes a more notable thing later on. It's a great one, focusing on her and the villain Mimete trying to win a contest to become an Idol Singer's costar. Both girls, instead of being rivals, actually BOND over being "True Fans" for having the obscure gear to prove it, and cheer each other on. When Minako falls just short, and her disappointment is stunted by the idol Arajin, who confesses that "your memories of me will fade", as idol worship always does- and that girls will drop following celebrities once they find TRUE love. Minako is of course even MORE entranced by this. Fantastic episode, though. Minako is actually relatively sane for once (her weirdest thing is hiding fangirling from the others), and Mimete is adorably crazy and mercurial.

My notes on the famous Sailor Venus episode:
Episode #78: This is a pretty famous one for Sailor Venus fans, largely because it completely defined her new personality. Perfected it, basically. A wave of flu virus has hit Juban District in Tokyo (even back then, the Japanese always wore medical masks to avoid transfering illness to others), and all of the Sailors have come down with it... except for Minako. And unfortunately... she is the world's crappiest nurse. She leaves Makoto's place a disaster area, and is then taking care of poor Rei, insisting she'll get her "rice gruel" right this time. Watching Rei eye it suspiciously while Minako's eyes light up like a child on Christmas morning is hilarious. And then of course she A) adds too much salt, B) spills the ENTIRE THING on Rei, and C) dumps her out of bed while trying to change the sheets. Then somehow she blows up Rei's stereo, and the poor girl has had it.

In a bizarre moment, Mina jumps from the ground to the second-floor balcony of Usagi's home! Not even in Sailor form! This... this goes against my theory that their Sailor Forms are powered-up compared to their normal ones! How... how did this happen?!?

Then stuff gets awesome- Mina finally stops F-ing up and Usagi feels a bit better. They have one of those "girl chats" where Usagi's all "is this 'cause I'm the Princess?" and Minas all "Nah, it's because we're great friends and I feel at ease around you". Then, while the Sailors triumphantly stagger through the streets, REFUSING to let the flu virus hold them back from their duty, Mina stumbles upon Esmeraude's plot, and the villainess goes "this means you found out about my plan to make everyone sick, then give them medicine laced with Dark Power?". Mina's all "of course I knew that!" Even though SHE HAD NO IDEA. That is so rad.

Hey- Venus uses the CRESCENT BEAM in her solo fight! We haven't seen that in ages! And then the others arrive, and we get Bubble Spray! Some director was nostalgic, I see. They make short work of the Droid, Esmeraude leaves, and soon poor Minako now has to deal with a flu of her very own... and must survive the ordeal of NURSE USAGI. One of the funnier episodes, largely for slapstick and the growing anger/frustration of the poor Sailors.

That sound you hear is every girl who grew up in the 1990s swooning.

Tiger's Eye: "Good GOD- where did you get that tacky playboy outfit?"
Tuxedo Mask: "Quiet! I don't need to hear that from you"
- oh Mamo-chan.

Relationship (Usagi, aka Sailor Moon)- The two are very close, despite near-constant threats upon their lives by evil people. His love for her is so much a part of his being that even not knowing who she is, or being brainwashed, he is compelled to protect her, even creating The Moonlight Knight to defend her while he has no memory of their love.
Responsibility (Eventually Becomes King Endymion)- At some point, Mamoru will become the King of Earth.
Relationship (Chibi-Moon)- Tuxedo Mask's daughter from the future comes to live with her mother a couple times, and has an unhealthy relationship with her dad.

Tuxedo Mask- The Ultimate Helper:
-Tuxedo Mask played a huge role in the series, at first being a sort of mythical figure- the mysterious handsome stranger that saved the heroine for reasons that were his own. He was stoic, confident, and maintained a huge aura of mystery- the heroine was infatuated with him, and he always left with a tantalizing lack of answers. I think a hell of a lot of girls grew up in the 1990s with this guy causing strange stirrings in their nethers.
-He appears in the first episode, helping out without giving away any information, and at the same time an antagonistic older guy shows up, mocking Usagi for her terrible test scores (Original Dub dialogue: "Are you ACTUALLY stupid, or just incredibly lazy?"). His main goal seems to be as a pest for Usagi; yet another thing in the world designed to vex her. Certainly he's meaner than his kind-hearted friend Motoki, a friend of Usagi's. Within a handful of episodes, it becomes quite clear that yes, this too-cool-for-school, shades-wearing College student is actually Tuxedo Mask. It takes them a bit to actually SAY IT, but it's bleedingly obvious for even the dumb kids.
-It turns out the "mystery" is because Mamoru (who takes a while to actually be named, actually) doesn't realize he IS Tuxedo Mask until later. In his civilian life, he simply feels agonizing pain, then transforms. Only later does he figure it out (he transforms to his civilian form while holding a Rainbow Crystal). And his mysterious air even continues- though he confesses he's always there to help Sailor Moon, he reveals that he's also out for himself. He has mysterious visions of some Moon Princess, and requires the Silver Crystal in order to regain his memories and discover what's going on. And since it's the same Crystal the girls want... he declares that they might just become enemies.

The Full Story:
-Eventually, the whole story unfolds. Mamoru is the reincarnation of Prince Endymion, the Earth Prince who fell in love with Moon Princess Serenity centuries ago, and was slain alongside her by Queen Beryl and her Dark Kingdom. Their eternal love awakens in modern times, and he becomes Tuxedo Mask in order to protect the girl he doesn't even realize is his true love, because HOLY CRAP THAT'S ROMANTIC YOU GUYS. After several episodes of feuding with Zoisite of the Dark Kingdom, he is fatally-injured by a cowardly sneak attack, and nearly dies in Sailor Moon's arms... until the Magical Teardrop of True Love reawakens him and they realize they are truly meant to be. At which point Queen Beryl f*cking kidnaps him because WHAT A BITCH, and now he's the brainwashed, evil general Prince Endymion, loyal only to Beryl.

-This mini-arc contains Mamoru now acting on behalf of the Dark Kingdom, but he feuds with rival general Kunzite, occasionally rescues the Sailors from "unfair" battles, and finds himself unwilling to truly attack them. Even so... his Black Roses (holy metaphors!) now save the Monsters instead of Sailor Moon, and he sends Monsters after them. Sailor Moon eventually purifies him, but Beryl just steals him away, tearing her heart out even further. In the very last episode of the first season, Sailor Moon is finally faced with Endymion, who assaults her with savage ferocity- she is forced to kill her One True Love with a Tiara to the chest. Only in his dying moments can he recover, and with a final surge, he throws a Rose through Beryl's chest, killing her and setting off the endgame. Usagi nearly kisses him... but refuses to, pointing out that all of her friends could not kiss the boys THEY liked, and so this act of romance on her part would be wrong.

Sailor Moon R:
-As the new season begins, the gang is all resurrected, but Mamoru retains no memory. Tuxedo Mask appears no more, but some "Moonlight Knight" guy does during the anime-only arc. Eventually it's revealed that the Knight is a manifestation of Mamoru's True Love, and soon he recovers his memories, and he and Usagi are together forever. For about two episodes. Because then he starts having mysterious nightmares that tell him to break up with Usagi or she'll die, and so he's forced to shatter her poor heart and act like a raging cockbite for an entire season ("The red string that binds our destinies has been severed" or, my particular favorite, "I don't like weak-willed women"). And then it's revealed that the nightmares were sent by his future self, King Endymion, to test the bonds of his and Usagi's love. So all that torture is for a pretty weird reason, and Mamo looks like an asshole (though a few episodes make it quite clear that he's taking this hard, too- crying Manly Tears onto his motorcycle helmet and stuff).

-This begins a problem for our starring couple- the universe fights so hard to keep them apart (he's brainwashed in one arc, forgetful in another, and broken up in a third) that they're almost never really together. The show's writers confessed they actually had no idea what to do with the couple once they were together, and that it was easier to play Star-Crossed Lovers, as Mamoru turned boring every time he hooked up with our heroine. And you can kind of see that... in the early going, he's this smooth, cool, snarky asshole. As Endymion he's an elite villain. As Tuxedo Mask, he was a mysterious stranger, but also incredibly aloof and distant- the Unattainable Hottie. But once he & Usagi become a couple, he morphs into Stoic Loving Normal Guy, losing all of that classic cool- his motorbike-riding, sunglasses-wearing days are over.

The Trouble With Tuxedo:
-They really never make it out of that, too. Hell, in the final season, Super Stars, he takes a full-season powder (it turns out HE'S DEAD). He ends up kind of a flat character, representing more an iconic thing (the Mysterious Stranger) than a well-rounded character. I think part of the problem is that his initial character is a smirking, smug smart-ass, gladly making fun of random High School girls... and then he turns into Mister Serious, being a mature, stoic type of guy. Much more dull than his early persona.
But it might be his stoic-ness that helps make him a fairly famous character. That character design doesn't hurt, either- "Tuxedo & Cape" is a pretty generic set-up, but adding the top hat, the mask and the roses and you've got something. And then he goes and does crazy shit like driving his motorcycle, catching twenty feet of air, and transforming into Tuxedo Mask by the time he hits pavement. Some dudes have class- Tuxedo Mask IS class.

Sailor Moon S Notes:
-Sailor Moon S is... where they really just dropped the ball on Mamoru for good. See, he was arguably the #2 character of the manga version of the series, but the cartoon's directors more or less just confessed they had no idea where to go with the character. He wasn't as mischievous or mysterious as in the manga, so they ended up with this bland, helpful guy. And since they spent ALL OF SAILOR MOON with a "Will They, Won't They?" gimmick, had him lose his memory in Sailor Moon R's first part, and then involuntarily break up with Usagi in the SECOND part of that series... they really were together for so short a time that the writers had no idea HOW THEY INTERACTED, meaning... they just kind of DIDN'T.

-It's weird to think about, given how important he had been to the series up until this point. We really saw a LOT of him in the first part of the series, and a good bit of the show focused on him. But here, they just lose him and never reel him back in- he shows up from time to time, but almost never as a character of focus. Hell, his "Save at the last second to give a speech" gimmick is taken over by Sailors Uranus & Neptune! So while you never quite go "Hey, where did he go?", he's no longer the focus he once was. They never even take his Heart Crystal! In the second half of the season, the three Outer Sailors (Uranus, Neptune & Pluto) attempted to recruit him for their mission, as he was the most "adult" and sensible of the main cast, but he stuck it out with the Inner group.

-There was one nice moment, however. When Ami was angsting over his obsessive focus towards being a doctor, wondering if that was really her dream or just an expectation she made for herself, it was MAMO, the only other mature person in her life, who gave her proper advice, convincing her to be her best self. And he even playfully FLIRTED with her ("If I had a cute doctor like you, I wouldn't be afraid of getting my shots!").
-In Sailor Moon S, he uses a funny one-off- a Rose that fires into a huge cylinder that traps the foe in a Sustained Damage attack.

Sailor Moon SuperS Notes:
-Sailor Moon SuperS was a very odd addition for Mamoru. On many levels, they completely reverted to type- time and time again, Tuxedo Mask would give a big speech and distract the Monster of the Week, which would then be killed. Almost half of them were killed in this manner! It was like the first seasons again! Mamoru & Usagi got more time as a couple, but as they were pushed a bit aside for Chibi-Usa, the focus wasn't really there. Which was funny, for the reasons I've stated before- the producers just had issues with him. One episode would sacrifice personal growth from Usagi for the sake of gags where she was horribly jealous of him living at Rei's Shrine, while another makes a huge deal out of how deep and unassailable their love is. When Fish Eye dresses up as a beautiful woman and tries to steal Mamoru (with whom she's smitten) away, he instantly refuses and says what he loves about Usagi are "Her beautiful dreams"- the wording shocking Fish Eye, who cannot dream. This leads to FE's reformation, and that of the entire Amazon Trio.

-Despite that, the character got robbed of a bit of dignity. Frequently, enemies would ignore his speeches, some of which got EXTRA silly. In the Season Finale, he'd grow sick as the Earth got covered in spider webs- being so intrinsic to the planet, he felt sympathy pains and thus sat out the entire finale. One episode has his college friends who are so dear to him yet we've never seen before and will never see again hang out, with a male friend being ashamed over his unmanly tidy apartment, and a female one more or less reveal her crush on him (she finally stands aside, as she's figured out the childish kid Mamoru brought along with an outing and Sailor Moon were one and the same). And a few episodes had him act kind of like a douche- when Usagi dreams about joining the ballet, he bluntly tells her to lose some weight ("justified" by close-ups of some slight pudge near her hemlines). Later, he makes the same crack (but it turns out she's holding up Sailors Mercury & Chibi-Moon as well).

-He does get a neat bit in the end, however, when he meets Helios in a dream version of Elysion. Feeling dejected, Helios mourns his failure, but a sickly Mamoru appears as Prince Endymion, and carefully talks him through it. In a clever display, he rebuffs all of Helios's points with questions- "Do you really think it's possible for the Dead Moon to wipe out all dreams?" "Is your duty the only reason you protect dreams?" "Do you still have that dream?" This makes Helios realize that dreams cannot be stamped out. It's a bit cheesy, but given this show, it runs on that kind of idealistic belief.

Tuxedo Mask's Powers:
-Tuxedo Mask is techically the "Sailor" of Earth- he holds Earth's Star Seed (as revealed in Sailor Stars) and is its protector, having been the "Prince of Earth" in an older era. So all those Sailor Earth fanfics out there are totally canonically inaccurate... not that it stopped me from making my own self-insert Sailor Earth. Of course, I must have low self-esteem or something, because instead of a Mary Sue character, I made my character a huge weiner that totally lost a bunch of fights, and was generally a buffoon and butt-monkey.

-Tuxedo Mask is separate from the other Senshi, and fights rather differently. He's more of a Dexmonkey than most of them, and uses a power that's more accurate than powerful with his Roses. They rarely do a great deal of damage, but can slash and cut, stab into concrete (Penetrating), or even be tossed in massive salvos. Though really, he only used the Multiattack variant ONE TIME that I can think of, against Rubeus of the Black Moon Family, but whatever, it was DAMN COOL, and made him look unusually bad ass at the same time, so I'll use it. Seriously, as much as people make fun of the whole "he throws roses" thing, when you can launch that shit out like a freaking Macross Missile Barrage, you are a stylish bad-ass.

-He's also got a neak extend-o cane, and fights quite well, as his repeated brawls with Zoisite proved. He can sense danger as far as the Sailors are concerned, allowing him to arrive in the nick of time (not the Troubleseeker power though- he doesn't 'port there- it's established he has to actually Leap or ride his way over). He's actually more expensive than the Sailors, but I think that suits him- he was a bit more capable on his own.

-His three identities require some thought. Prince Endymion uses the same weapons (even becoming Tuxedo Mask at points), swapping the red roses for black ones, but carries a +3 Sword that's probably quite powerful- Sailor Moon slays him with the Tiara attack to save herself against it. The Moonlight Knight carries white roses instead of red ones, and carries a Scimitar that he also tosses one time (it shatters the Cardian's "Energy-Draining Wheel", for example). He's a good enough fighter that in the first season, Endymion effortlessly fends off Sailor Jupiter's best shots, then throws a salvo of his own that leaves her vulnerable and helpless- he only backs off because he finds it amusing.

-Luna is an important "Exposition" character in Sailor Moon- when young Usagi rescues the cat as its being tormented by cruel little boys in the first episode, she recognizes something special about the girl. Luna thus reveals that she can TALK, and then pops out a magical Transformation Pen using a backflip maneuver, and tells her that she's Sailor Moon, and that she has to find the "Moon Princess". The show has a bit of trouble with Luna, as she is supposed to KNOW stuff, but a ton of stuff is also supposed to be a mystery, meaning that she often has to say just enough to move the plot forward, but never knows anything useful until something happens to unlock her memories.

-For example, they spend a huge chunk of the show searching for the Moon Princess and the Silver Crystal. And it turns out that the Moon Princess is Usagi (the person Luna has spent months being around), and that the Silver Crystal is actually in seven pieces. All of which she knows only when it's revealed, at which point her memories suddenly come flooding back to her, all "oh yeah, this is how it was".

-Luna at least gets some fun characterization- without Mars around, her job was to scold Usagi's childishness and inability to do proper work. She cheers her on in battle, but in a strict, mentor-ly fashion. Despite being an Animal Mascot, she's never depicted as overly-cutesy, but gets some fun episodes here and there, like the time she's repeatedly molested and followed around by an enormous fat cat named Rhett Butler. Her protestations against this become funnier as Sailor Mars, the most cynical of all the Sailors, is repeatedly moved to tears by their "kitty love". Luna was supposed to be an "Older Sister" type originally, but the Original Dub famously replaced that with an "English Nanny" character, doing a MUCH more mature-sounding voice. The fundamental character and purpose was unchanged, but it made her seem so old that to this day I still view her as old, even with a younger New Dub voice.

-Eventually she hangs around with Artemis, and they share a bit of an antagonistic working relationship. Artemis pretends to be their "Mission Control" computer, often acts impulsively or overly-snarky with everyone around, and gets made fun of by Luna a lot. Luna also shows an attitude towards Usagi, but she also feels it the hardest when Usagi is feared dead- though Usagi's lack of responsibility is tiresome for her, she knows the girl has a good heart.

Unfortunately, they never learn these things until its plot-relevant, meaning that most things are left mysterious until they literally just happen, at which point the Cats can now explain what's going on.

-Artemis was Minako's Cat Sidekick in Sailor V, thus predating Luna by a ways. When Venus makes her debut in Sailor Moon Artemis is alongside her. He & Luna are established as old allies from the Moon Kingdom, and soon they reveal that the "Mission Control" that Luna has been talking to each night, commisserating over their mission, was in fact ARTEMIS all along! This thread, which went on for like twenty episodes, was thus blown off as a gag, with an embarrassed Artemis (with tins of cat food beside him) never explaining why he was tricking Luna.

-Eventually, a status quo was set in- while Luna was more important, Artemis was usually alongside her to bark orders and give mentorly advice. Except that he was a bit of a stubborn ass at times, and Minako often punished him for his smart-assed, sarcastic manner. He would make fun of their datelessness, or scream "I hope you get fat!" at their excitement over a cake shop, and she would either jab him with her finger (the Original Dub edited this out once) or just trap him in a picnic basket or something. However, on several occasions the cat really came through- more than once, he would be the sole hero left to tackle a villain while the others were indisposed, and we would cycle back to seeing a scratched-up, exhausted Artemis taking on a Monster more than twice the size of a human being, with superhuman powers!

-Artemis and Luna would later hook up, with her stodginess and seriousness and his more careless, sarcastic manner making a good pair. Their kitten, Diana (notice that all three cats use names based around Moon Goddesses of the ancient world) was ridiculously cute, too. Curiously, since Mamoru was often apart from the group, the sarcastic Artemis was really the only male contact the girls had in most of their missions- I'm just now realizing that. In the manga, he was a bit more calm and rational, and occasionally took human form in times of crisis.

-Though not a major combatant, Artemis is able to hold off villains for a significant chunk of time, despite having -1 Toughness and -2 Strength. He is, if nothing else, REALLY REALLY PERSISTENT. Hell, I even gave him Last Stand & Withstand Damage, two things that almost NEVER end up on Cat characters!

Sailor Moon SuperS Notes:
-As time went on, Luna & Artemis became less and less useful. Hell, repeatedly in the show, something would turn up, and only RIGHT THEN would Luna & Artemis go "You know, I think I remember hearing about this..." and immediately go through exposition about the "Guardian of Destruction" Sailor Saturn, the nature of the "Queen of the Dark Moon" Queen Nehalennia, etc. I mean, they'd even make it a plot point that such memories only unlock once they've heard about it in our time period, which makes them EXTRA useless. The characters themselves also took a back seat with time- with Sailor Mars around, Usagi didn't need as much scolding, and eventually she got a bit more mature. The cats were just kind of "there". Though in most seasons, there's at least one "Cat Episode"- in Sailor Moon R, he gets some focus after running off to pout after getting teased one too many times by all the girls. And in Sailor Moon SuperS, we finally meet Luna & Artemis's daughter from the future, the grey kitten Diana!

-However, this episode is a bit weird, as Artemis is teased for following around a cute human nun, and the arrival of a kitten calling him "Father!" causes Luna to jealously SWIPE at him! This typical "Anime Sight Gag" is actually turned on its head to show how hurtful it would actually be, as Artemis sulks and the girls chide Luna for being so careless with his feelings, as he clearly cares deeply for Luna. Finally, it's revealed that Artemis was just at the church because he'd always dreamed of getting married in one, and that Luna is from their future. And so it's finally made clear that the two cats are a couple, but they only seem to snuggle up in the show's opening (which features Diana dropping on top of them). The best part of this by far is Mamoru joking about how now they're both fathers in the future, and asks him if he wants to go out drinking.

-Curiously, though I heard a lot about Diana as a young Sailor Moon fan (when SuperS only existed in the English-speaking world in the form of tapes translated by fans online), she doesn't actually DO ANYTHING! Her debut is by far her busiest episode, and she's only there in small bits. The rest of the time, she sits on Chibi-Usa's head for their iconic "Walking Pose", and sometimes asks uncomfortable, piercing questions that people don't quite want to answer. But... she's just window-dressing. Hell, despite SuperS being the season in which Chibi-Usa replaces Usagi as the main friggin' character, her CAT isn't the subject for her exposition- PEGASUS is! So Diana isn't even used for Chibi-Usa's venting purposes, and only appears when the kid is wandering around with others in a group.
