Might need to get my eyes checked. I saw this picture and wondered if this was a version of Captain Britain going back to the earlier suit.

I always thought Kang had such an unfortunate look for someone who was supposed to be a major villain.

Complications:
Motivation (Power & Excitement)- Kang grew bored with his pedestrian, idyllic life in the future, and decided that he needed to engage in war and conquest in the past. He desires power, but also craves the challenge and glory.
Enemy (Immortus)- Kang's "Future Self", a manipulative scholarly-type, frequently interjects himself into Kang's life and tries to cause havoc with Kang's schemes. Kang was worried for years about turning into this "weak old man", but thankfully the two were split off by The Time-Keepers.
Relationship (Ravonna)- Kang tried to marry the girl (from some random Kingdom he'd conquered), but she sacrificed her life to save his after she realized she loved him after all. She resurrected as The Terminatrix, but they stopped hanging out.
Relationship (Marcus)- Kang has a son (actually a clone), but Marcus fell in love with Ms. Marvel (Carol Danvers) and led to his father's defeat.

Total: Abilities: 80 / Skills: 68--34 / Advantages: 44 / Powers: 60 / Defenses: 17 (235)

Kang- Riding on One Great Story:
-Avengers Forever was one awesome, awesome comic book story. Done by Kurt Busiek & Carlos Pacheco, it took Kang from a heacache-inducing time-travel villain with an iffy history (quite probably the single most-confusing backstory of any Marvel character) and several bad stories under his belt, and turned him into an awesome, respectable bad-ass, obsessed with giving himself challenges and epic conflicts with the greatest opponents in the world- The Avengers. Fighting his "future" as the wisened old boring scholar Immortus, he teamed with a cross-time bunch of Avengers as Busiek made use of the most entertaining form of Continuity Porn in history, answering historical quandaries and questions only HE was personally aware of (in an entire issue narrated by the Space Phantom, who described every continuity mess-up ever). Oh, and Kang helped save the day in the end. Unfortunately, aside from Busiek, almost every Kang appearance is either as a "Generic Master Villain", "Doctor Doom Lite", or in a spectacularly forgettable, awful story that's also too confusing for its own good (basically anything post-Busiek).

Kang's History *takes drink*:
-okay, SO! Kang was a scholar born in the 30th century, a peaceful time, and grew fascinated with some of the crazy history in ages past. Bored with his time period, he decides to use a Time Machine and rule Egypt in the past as "Pharaoh Rama-Tut" but is defeated by the time-travelling Fantastic Four. Later, the Scarlet Centurion arrives from the future and fights the Avengers, as well as a guy named "Kang the Conqueror"- eventualy, writers explained away all these "Evil Time-Travelling Conquerors" by consolidating them into being the same guy. It turned out he discovered a warn-torn future on a dying Earth and took it over, using it as a base of operations to conquer the more fertile world of Earht's pats. In the form of Kang, he becomes a recurring menace for the Avengers- sort of a guy to give them either a one-issue threat or control some other guy into doing it. He is usually defeated and has his schemes unravel once the heroes figure out what's going on. Then in a classic "Stan Lee" move, he fell for the Princess Ravonna, who refused to marry him- his own men soon mutinied, causing Kang to fight alongside the Avengers, and ultimately, Ravonna revealed that she had fallen in love with Kang, dying as she took a blast meant for him. Desperate to bring her back, Kang wins a contest against the Grandmaster... but may only choose power over life OR death- the villain chooses "death" and tries to kill the Avengers, but the Black Knight, who wasn't a member yet, intervenes and stops him.

-As the Scarlet Centurion, he introduces us to the Squadron Sinister (evil versions of DC's Justice League of America, soon giving us the Squadron Supreme), and becomes an odd kind of recurring menace- he's always kind of a BIG DEAL, but he's much more like Doctor Doom Lite, creating these dopey little schemes and appearing every year or so to threaten some heroes- he's beaten by smaller team-ups like the Invaders, the Hulk, Torch & the Thing, and Spidey & Iron Man. He becomes a central baddie in The Celestial Madonna mega-arc of Steve Englehart's, trying to sire the supposedly-powerful Cosmic Messiah Baby- this results in him kidnapping The Avengers AGAIN, trying to marry Mantis, then OH MY GOD things get weird, as it turns out Kang in the future becomes Rama-Tut again, then rules Egypt for 10 years and evolves in Limbo into Immortus, who was this kind of Trickster-Mentor-Manipulator figure who'd appeared in other tales, thus combining FOUR characters into one. Later, Kang & Rama-Tut are both killed in a battle that featured Immortus allying with the Avengers.

Kang Gets Weirder:
-Kang reappeared years later in The Secret Wars, but was slain by Dr. Doom immediately in a hilarious manner, simply getting a mind-controlled Ultron to do his bidding- he really made Kang look like a bitch. A bunch of different Kangs (created by endless time travel somehow, and also Alternate Realities) show up and do some stuff, but Kang eventually succeeds in killing all the rest of them alongside a Ravonna he'd saved from the time-stream. They were called the Council of Kangs, swear to God. However, he goes insane after trying to absorb the knowledge of all the other Kangs, and is lost in Limbo- this is finally revealed to have been the plot of Immortus. Things get even MORE complex, as the Council of Cross-Time Kangs, a collection of aliens disguised as Kang (WTF??) search for an Ultimate Weapon, and another alternate Kang, split from "Prime Kang", is killed by a Nebula-controlled Human Torch. Immortus meanwhile reveals that HE wants to rule all of time in Avengers West Coast, and Prime Kang shows up helping Dr. Doom during The Infinity War.

-Kang gets some powerful Cosmic Thing to kill all of the Cross-Time Kangs before helping the Avengers and Ravonna (now resurrected as The Terminatrix) defeat it. However, NOW we get Avengers Forever, which sums up a lot of his history and adds the note that his desire all along has been for adventure and a purpose in the world, having felt listless in a boring future where he already controlled everything. Now talking about how the Avengers are "Worthy Foes", Kang finally gets a ton of epic character moments, and made a fan out of me. Thinking Immortus a "simpering academic", Kang decries eventually becoming him, and this is only furthered when he finds that Immortus has always been the minion of the Time-Keepers. Finally, Kang and the Avengers save humanity and the epic story concludes, Kang and Immortus finally being split through sheer force of will, saving Kang this fate.

Post-Avengers Forever (ie. Kang Sucks Again):
-Fast-forward to the end of Busiek's run on Avengers, and Kang becomes the final mega-villain alongside his son Marcus, the Scarlet Centurion. Kang actually demolished Washington, killed TONS of people, and actually got the world signed over to him. He lost, of course, but it was more notable for me because of the ludicrous fact that NO OTHER COMICS MENTIONED IT. I know Marvel's got an ass-ton of comics out there, and occasionally prefers not to mention every book's arcs elsewhere, but you'd THINK that somewhere in Spider-Man or X-Factor or Daredevil or something, someone would've gone "oh hey, remember that week where MILLIONS DIED and Kang took over the world? Boy, that really sucked." We're talking 9/11 times a THOUSAND, and nobody really talked about it or remembered it the second it was over!

-He was undone by Marcus, who turned out to be a clone of his (though it was Captain America who defeated Kang in personal combat), who fell in love with Ms. Marvel, but Kang killed him in revenge. ANOTHER split-Kang would happen when Kang attempted to change his own past, but the confrontation with his evil future self so horrified the young Kang that he became "Iron Lad" and started the Young Avengers. Kang is killed, but this creates a paradox, so Iron Lad returns to his time and wipes his mind of the events.

-He appeared in Uncanny Avengers as part of a REALLY convoluted story that involved the Apocalypse Twins trying to take over the world, and Kang deciding to fight them because they'd opposed him, but it was pretty cool when Kang gathered a ton of Time-Travelling Baddies (Doctor Doom 2099, Ahab, Stryfe, Nazi Magistrate Braddock, etc.) to save the day. Of course he immediately tried to take over the world again, but was beaten by the Avengers Unity Squad. Another Kang calls himself "Mister Gryphon" and states he has splintered into various selves due to more time fluctuations- he's beaten by the Avengers. When Vision abducts an infant Kang to prevent these endless struggles, a series of Kangs attack from splintered realities, attacking the Avengers in their infant states- they are saved by ANOTHER Future Kang, and the Wasp returns baby Kang to his rightful place- the Avengers beat Kang and save the day. Naturally, he has reappeared since.

Kang as a Whole:
-Kang stands as one of the many would-be World Conquerors in Marvel Continuity, but he maintains a semblance of credibility that many of the wannabes lack- he's effectively Dr. Doom Lite a lot of the time (Proud Dictator, Technological Villain, Manipulator, etc.), but having actually conquered many centuries, taken over the world once (matching Doom), and it's generally ALWAYS a big deal when he shows up. He loses some points for the INSANELY convoluted, insane backstory featuring Alternate Versions, numerous deaths, resurrections and Retcons (OH GOD THE RETCONS)- it's REALLY hard to find comic book characters with more mind-bendingly insane histories of nonsense. I just shudder EVERY TIME he shows up in something (Criminy, he even helps HICKMAN'S Avengers run get more convoluted. HICKMAN'S!!). Which is too bad, because he's got legitimacy, a GREAT mega-arc in Avengers Forever, and is one of the defining Avengers foes. But very few characters have been through as many purely BAD and convoluted stories as Kang has- I think there's only a couple of good ones out of the lot. He'd be better served being a one-off foe these days, but instead writers tend to crawl up their own asses and over-complicate stories in an attempt to for "My AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRTTTTTTTTT!".

Kang's Stats:
-Kang ironically is weaker than Doctor Doom, funny considering he's got ten centuries of tech over the Doomster, but he's always been the manipulator and leader rather than the in-close-combat type of guy. I gave him a Weapon Summoning thing from his awesome Double-Cannons in Avengers Forever (brought into his hands by clicking his fingers), and he's remarkably hard to hurt with his combination of Armor & Force Field. However, like a lot of Megalomaniacal Villains, a Kang-themed campaign isn't about fighting the guy- it's about fighting his THOUSANDS of minions, high-tech war machines, and undoing a scheme so convoluted the makers of Lost would shake their heads. Kang is one of the few villains who can bring more to bear than even DOOM can- I can't think of another Earth-based menace with more potential minions and story-arcs.

Ares wrote: Wed Jun 24, 2020 11:15 pm Yeah, Kate could have been kind of interesting as a heroine who made use of a lot of fallen Avenger gear, such as Swordman's sword (which was very versatile), Mockingbird's batons/staff (when she wanted to use more non-lethal skills), Hawkeye's bow (for range), maybe one of Hawkeye or Dane's old sky-cycles, maybe some of the Black Knight's super light chainmail for body armor, maybe one of Moon Knight's old hooded cloaks so she could have glider capabilities as well as his grappling hooks, USAgent's wrist devices that generated that energy shield, etc. Make her kind of a living homage to several Avengers, give her a wide range of gear, a lot of versatility, and have her grow as this walking arsenal. Instead of just a mini-Clint Barton.

Thinking about it, the sword/bow/white hooded cloak/mesh look would kind of make her look like a female Taskmaster.
Wow, I could totally love that sort of hodgepodge Kate Bishop, using assorted random gear from former Avengers! (She did have some of Mockingbird's stuff, as well, IIRC, and Patriot joked that she should be called 'Hawkingbird' if she was using both Hawkeye and Mockingbird's stuff...)

The Council of Cross-Time Kangs

THE COUNCIL OF CROSS-TIME KANGS
Created By:
Stan Lee & Jack Kirby
First Appearance: Avengers #292 (June 1988)
Role: Cabal of Manipulators

-The Council of Cross-Time Kangs is actually a group of humans, aliens and other creatures who wear the uniform of Kang the Conqueror after defeating various robots used by the real Kang to rule multiple realisties at the same time. They sought to permanently undo his works, but Kang sent a temporal monster after them, slaughtering them all. In total, they lasted only five years, and were a mere eyeblink of Avengers Forever, dealt with quickly when Kang gave his life story.

The Scarlet Centurion

Post by Jabroniville »

THE SCARLET CENTURION (Nathaniel Richards, aka Kang the Conqueror, Pharaoh Rama-Tut, Immortus)
Role:
Living Continuity Snarl

-There exist three different Scarlet Centurions in Marvel Comics:

1) The first was a one-time identity used by Kang- he formed and empowered the Squadron Sinister- a retcon would state that he based them off of the Squadron Supreme.

Image

2) This is the time-lord who rules the future of the Squadron Supreme universe (Earth-712). Powerful and confident, he witnessed Tom Thumb stealing the cure for cancer, but stoically refused to chase him "some things, like Tom Thumb's fate- are known to me".

Image

3) Marcus Kang, the cloned son of Kang himself. He was killed by Kang for betraying him to the Avengers.

THE TRACKSUIT BROS (aka The Tracksuit Mafia, The Tracksuit Draculas)
Created By:
Matt Fraction & David Aja, bro
First Appearance, Bro: Hawkeye #1 (Oct. 2012, bro)
As a life-long fan of archers, especially Green Arrow, Hawkeye and Robin Hood, I tried to pick up the Hawkeye solo book. Really, I tried. But between the HORRIBLE artwork that everyone seemed to praise at the time, and the lack of credibility they gave Clint as a person (let alone hero), it was extremely hard to get into. And then they made the Tracksuit Bros an ongoing thing. I thought it was stupid as a one-off joke, but when THEY became Hawkeye's #1 reoccurring villains, I realized that the writer had no respect for or clue about Hawkeye's characterization and ability, and dropped it.

The worst butchering of a comic book hero I've ever seen, and I've seen Man of Steel.

David Aja is very much part of the indie style of minimalism that isn't really minimalism- simple enough people, but detailed backgrounds. He's also got a sense of color (the TPB showcases how he has pages switch color palettes, alternates panel colors, and includes parts of the main color of one panel into a later panel in small objects or skin tones). He also does great expressions. It fit The Immortal Iron Fist better than here, though.

Though yeah, I can imagine if the "Bro" would get on your nerves, you wouldn't like much of the series, given how they're repeated goons. I found it funnier the more I realized it was a real-life verbal tic for Eastern Europeans of a certain age (especially as Hawkeye uses many middle-aged or elderly ones talking the same way).

Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +8 (DC 18), Parry +8 (DC 18), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +7

Complications:
Responsibility (The Time Keepers' Will)- Immortus, tired of a life beset by tragedy of his own making (including the deaths of his son Marcus, and consort Ravonna), has fallen in with the Time Keepers, and generally does their bidding.
Enemy (Kang the Conqueror)- Immortus' "Past Self" is a conquering war-monger who frequently has grand plans that require interference from Immortus himself.

Total: Abilities: 76 / Skills: 68--34 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 11 (134)

-Immortus, who was eventually revealed to be the future self of future-villain Kang (and that is, by a WIDE MARGIN, the SIMPLEST part of his backstory), is generally a Cosmic Chessmaster who manipulates the Avengers frequently for his own ends. Though basically Kang, he is an older, more scholarly character, and more in tune with the "way things SHOULD be", and often goes out to set things right, often at the behest of his masters, the Time-Keepers. Having lived ages and losing his son Marcus and wife Ravonna in multiple timelines, Kang had grown discouraged, and was convinced by the Keepers to preserve the timeline instead of conquering it. However, Kang is DISGUSTED that he could turn into this "old doddering scholar", beholden to the will of others, and opposes Immortus every step of the way (at the climax of the fantastic Avengers Forever, the two are physically separated, so that they grow independently).

-Immortus actually debuted only two issues after Kang did, using historical figures against the Avengers in an attempt to destroy them. He later allied with Kang, but was betrayed and his tech was used to create the first "Legion of the Unliving"- afterwards, he would reveal that he, Rama-Tut & Kang were the same man, encountered at different points in his personal timeline. At this point, he became an occasional ally, serving as minister at the wedding of the Vision & Scarlet Witch (and Mantis & Swordsman-as-tree at the same time), and living in Limbo (which, confusingly, is not the same as the one Illyana Rasputin rules). He manipulated Thor into removing the time-travel enchantment on Mjolnir, then faked his death in a plot to ensure Kang killed all of his alternate selves. Eventually, however, he did a heel turn- he drove the Scarlet Witch insane in an attempt to become "Master of Time", and was rendered catatonic by the Time-Keepers for acting outside their rules. HE was behind the "Vision is not the Human Torch" retcon, and behind Tony Stark's betrayal of the Avengers and subsequent death.

-Eventually, Infinity War happened, and Immortus fully worked for the Time-Keepers against Kang and the Avengers, and much of his history and secret purposes were uncovered. Immortus was killed for turning against his masters one final time, but Kang was split into two separate beings, and only ONE of them would become Immortus, sparing Kang that fate. The character has appeared only rarely since then, showing up in the backstory of Darkstar and the Winter Guard (a splinter-group worked for him for a year, fighting Dire Wraiths), then he helped the Avengers undo the manipulations of Kang before apparently dying himself.

-Generally speaking, Immortus stories are hard to figure out, elaborate and involve seemingly-random changes in motivation and personality, as sometimes he's a "bad guy", and sometimes he's a "good guy". Any possible story can be told with him (and most writers will just use Kang if they want a Time-Travelling Villain, and only use Immortus if they want a careful planner/plotter, not a battling Conqueror, as that's Kang's schtick).

-While a worse fighter than his younger self (he barely seems to fight AT ALL, really), Immortus is a far more careful planner, and heroes generally will never get to engage him. He will simply manipulate things from Limbo (actual Limbo, not "Otherplace" Limbo, which is ruled by Illyana Rasputin- Marvel would of course use and refer to BOTH, despite them being different places, and still calls Illyana's home "Limbo" since Magik is a much more popular and more-used character than Immortus), generally with any kind of technological potential. A personal favourite tactic when confronted physically is to Summon any number of super-powerful allies from throughout time- these can often be powerful enough to handle THOR for a good time. Though "only" PL 6, he will frequently be encountered with things that could push him FAR beyond that level- this is a Manipulator/Plan Your Battles kind of villain, not a front-line fighter.

-OH MY GOD I LOVE CYCLONE SO MUCH I WANT TO MARRY HERRRRRR.... oh wait, this is a Marvel character who is also a dude. My bad.

-Andre Gerard is your typical Silver Age villain (despite debuting in 1975)- an Evil Foreign Scientist who uses his one invention FOR EVIL after quitting or being fired from his old job as an engineer. He became Cyclone- a minor-level recurring Spider-Man villain who debuted by kidnapping kidnapped J. Jonah Jameson for ransom. Spidey defeated him the first time by created a counter-vortex with a giant fan, and Cyclone was finally sprung from prison by the Maggia, threatening Spidey & Moon Knight- Moon Knight threw a snaring capsule at his feet, preventing Cyclone from spinning, which nearly suffocated him. Little was seen of Cyclone until he joined a band of villains at the Bar With No Name to discuss the murders of many villains by the Scourge of the Underworld- yes, Cyclone was one of those who met their ends that night, as the bartender revealed himself to be the very same Scourge, slaughtering everyone present.

-Marvel liked the name so much, they stuck it onto TWO other guys (one of which was a complete one-off who died in a ski accident OFF-PANEL so we could get a new one by Buseik & Bagley!), and then DC gave it to My Beautiful and Beloved years later. But the original was resurrected in modern times in a Punisher issue by The Hood. Here, he was depicted as a generic crook, allying with the villains to capture Frank Castle- they succeeded, but Frank took a ceremonial knife (the Hood wanted him to sacrifice G.W. Bridge in a ritual) and slashed Cyclone's throat, killing him again.

-Cyclone's got all the tricks of a Wind Controller, but at a PL 8 level. And like most, he's a HUGE Glass Cannon, being PL 6 defensively.

When that last one is the best costume you can come up with across an entire multiverse of alternate selves, you've got a problem. Spiderman would defeat the second one through taunts alone.

This one is the best look amongst all of Kang's various identities (seven hells, that's a scary thought).

THE GRIM REAPER (Eric Williams)
Created By:
Roy Thomas & John Buscema
First Appearance: The Avengers #52 (May 1968)
Role: Wannabe Major Villain
Group Affiliations: The Maggia, The Legion of the Unliving, HYDRA, The Lethal Legion, The Sinister Six
The Grim Reaper was initially a fun concept, the idea of a brother wrongfully blaming the Avengers for Simon's death and wanting revenge. That might have worked if Simon had stayed dead, but once he was brought back the Reaper had nothing consistent for him to draw on. It's no wonder he bounced around a lot and went all over the place.

In retrospect, the Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes version was a lot better. He plays as a very effective hand-to-hand fighter, someone above Nick Fury but just a bit below folks like Cap, Panther or Zemo. And there, rather than being a brother motivated by revenge, he's a bad apple that tempts Simon to make the biggest mistake of his life. Here, Reaper has been a villain for years, with Simon trying to distance himself from Reaper to promote his company. When Tony screws up badly and makes Simon think he was going to buy Williams industries out from under Simon, it's Reaper who pushes Simon to seek revenge, knowing that the process he's trying out for will possibly kill him.

Now Reaper is established as a Hydra assassin, a solid threat, and someone who is crazy enough that he could alternatively try to get revenge on Simon's behalf, or try to kill Simon for opposing him.

Plus he had an overall superior design:

Maybe all the evil ones teamed up to take out the Kangs with good fashion sense for making them look bad
