-The original Moonstone was a small-time hood who stole a stone found on the Moon's surface- he unwittingly incinerated a security guard who shot at him, having absorbed the bullet into the stone and giving him super-powers. He became "Moonstone", and was recruited as an agent of the Secret Empire, and a member of a front organization, the Committee to Regain America's Principles (hilariously an anagram for C.R.A.P., a direct parody of the then-current C.R.E.E.P. organization out to re-elect Nixon, who in the comic was the real head of the Secret Empire). He was used as part of their plan to discredit Captain America- Cap was framed for various crimes (such as the murder of the Tumbler), and even beaten publicly by Moonstone. Moonstone became a famous superhero and decried Cap every chance he got, but in the end, Cap, Falcon, Cyclops & Marvel Girl all teamed up and attacked the Empire when they acted to take over America- Cap, enraged at Moonstone's lies, beat his more powerful foe into unconsciousness on the White House lawn. The Secret Empire was exposed, Number One (Nixon) of the Empire committed suicide and Moonstone was imprisoned.

-Four years later, the villain reappeared in The Incredible Hulk, speaking to a psychiatrist named Dr. Karla Sofen. The manipulative, evil Sofen convinced him that giving HER the Moonstone was the best idea possible, as it was turning him into a monster, and so he gave it to her willingly! Sofen thus became the second Moonstone, and kept on in that role for years, completely relpacing Bloch. He reappeared many years later in Mark Gruenwald's Captain America run (when Steve thought he was dying), showing up with ionic powers similar to Wonder Man's, now calling himself Nefarius. Claiming to be the son of Count Nefaria, he kidnapped Moonstone II and attempted to kill her for her past manipulation of him, but Cap & Quasar fought him. Moonstone, having tricked him into thinking she was taken in by his manliness, shot him with an energy blast, defeating him. He reappeared a bit later fighting the Avengers after freaking out in a prison after seeing Moonstone II again, and was beaten. Bloch was later killed by Nefaria himself, who drained the ionic energy away from him.

-As Moonstone, Bloch was a good enough threat to defeat Captain America in their first encounter, largely by surprising him with superhuman strength and "New Villain Stink". Later, he surprised the Falcon with a laser-blast, and KO'd Cap when he ran to his friend's aide. Moonstone's later attempts were more "someone escapes" kinds of things.

-As Nefarius, Bloch had Count Nefaria-ish abilities, but not enough that Cap, Quasar & Moonstone couldn't overwhelm him. Later, he fought the Avengers, and Hercules & Giant-Man had to throw an ultra-dense Vision at him to knock him unconscious.

Great Nefarius stats!

As much as I love Natasha, just what does she think she is doing so up close to Nefarious?

Karla Sofen- Evil Is Sexy:
-Oh, Moonstone. Further proof that nothing acts like an aphrodisiac to men like the overwhelmingly sweet stench of evil :).

-Moonstone's an interesting one. Starting out as a manipulative, sociopathic monster and moving on from there, it's eventually revealed that she's actually manipulated depressed psychiatric patients to KILL THEMSELVES IN FRONT OF HER, killed her own mother (who had "wasted her life" caring for Karla as a child and thus earned her disgust), and she's moved on to basically trying to seduce every single man she's ever met who had any kind of power. She got down with Hawkeye when he led the Thunderbolts, manipulated Noh-Varr of Osborn's Avengers, slept with BULLSEYE of all people, and even flirted with Mac Gargan (ie. a FREAKING CANNIBAL). She's like this incredible microcosm of everything men fear about women personified: It's like Archie Comics' Trula Twyst modified into a super-villain, and made a man-eating hosebeast as well. Truly terrifying. And hot.

Moonstone the Journeyman Villain:
-Karla was initially a very minor character, appearing in The Incredible Hulk as a one-off foe, having manipulated the original Moonstone (Lloyd Bloch, a Secret Empire agent) into giving up his object of power to her. Captain America used her as a gun moll for Dr. Faustus before being revealed as the psychiatrist to the original Moonstone, and then manipulating him into giving her his namesake gem, allowing her to gain powers. She became yet another Journeyman Villain, never really focusing on one character (fighting Cap, Spider-Man, The Hulk and others), showing up on Egghead's short-lived Masters of Evil, then allying with Rhino, Electro & Blackout, and escaping into the Darkforce Dimension the latter. She tried to find more moonstone fragments on the Moon, but was beaten by Dazzler and the Inhumans (who were living there at the time).

-Moonstone's biggest thing for years was joining The Masters of Evil (she was on a short-lived version earlier, too) on their attack on Avengers Mansion, which resulted in her getting a broken neck during a fight with Captain Marvel (Monica Rambeau). A rematch didn't go her way, either. She decided to retire from supervillainy some time after recovering (she was a minor character in The Superia Strategem, going down ridiculously-easy to a single laser shot from Paladin), nearly got killed when the original Moonstone returned as the super-heavyweight "Nefarius", and then disappeared from comics for SEVERAL years.

The Thunderbolts:
-On to The Thunderbolts: Moonstone was sprung from prison unwillingly by Baron Zemo, but eventually went along with it. Manipulating (of course) the other team members, "Meteorite" built a power base around herself (convincing Zemo to put the teenage Jolt on the team in order to get yet another person more loyal to her on the squad), and opposed Zemo when he revealed their identities to the world. She turned young teen heroine Jolt into a "daughter figure", but learned too late that she actually cared for the girl when Jolt died. There was a bunch more heroism- she convinced Graviton to give up willingly, making him realize that he had no true purpose- and she even gained an attraction to new team leader Hawkeye! She'd meant to manipulate him into falling for her, but she was instead impressed that he ALREADY admired and respected her, mostly for her skills and intelligence.

-Later, Moonstone refused Graviton's offer to be his queen... and wondered why- it would have been so much easier. Later, she finds more about the origins of her moonstone- it's a Kree device, and the memories of past users are etched onto it, and drive her towards heroism... but she still allies with Graviton in one of his mad schemes, only turning against him in the end. Finally, she gained tremendous power when the T-Bolts ended up on Counter-Earth, and she swiped the moonstone from THAT world's Lloyd Bloch as well! This ultimately drove her too mad with power, and she was rendered comatose by the Avengers & T-Bolts combined. So, um, she was bad again.

Moonstone Back To Evil:
-After the Thunderbolts era, she was reduced to more straight-up super-villainy, with full sociopathic mania eventually being shown. She became the Field Leader of Norman Osborn's insane black-ops T-Bolts, and was then placed as his own "Ms. Marvel" on his Dark Avengers, finally getting an upgrade to the big leagues (albeit at the expense of any Thunderbolts characterization). She cuts missions short so she can go have sex with some random worker she finds hot (Osborn hilariously finds his amusing instead of enraging when Songbird points it out at the next meeting, especially since this nearly compromised the entire mission), ensures that Osborn receives placebos instead of medication for his insanity, acts completely nonchalant about the potential destruction of Thunderbolts Mountain by psychic invaders (she's playing games on her phone while her team are fighting for their lives), sleeps with nutjobs like Noh-Varr & Bullseye, and tries to kill Songbird in the field. Carol gives her one last shot at redemption, luring her to her own mother's gravestone, but Karla refuses to take it, smashing the monument instead. Eventually, all of this stuff fell apart, and she jobbed a little too often to be given much real credibility, losing to Carol Danvers again and again.

-Moonstone eventually just kind of vanished as a thing, without any "protector" around- she was in Luke Cage's "group of villains" Thunderbolts book temporarily, then showed up in the "Pleasant Hill" prison, then WINTER SOLDIER'S Thunderbolts, then finally defected back to the Masters of Evil, giving up working for the government. All in all, her big push, lasting about 10-ish years, amounted to nothing and she's forgotten again, as the T-Bolts concept dies out and Carol Danvers I guess doesn't need a Mirror Image Villain.

Moonstone Overall:
-Moonstone's a GREAT villain, though- the brief flirtations with goodness in Thunderbolts may've been interesting, but let's face it- Marvel has a tendency to try to turn a LOT of female villains into heroes (the whole "Bad Girl" thing affects men as much as "Bad Boys" affect the ladies), and I think she's a lot more interesting as a menacing, lethal sociopath out to use her Psychiatric degree as a weapon. It makes her unique and OH SO DELICIOUSLY EVIL.

Moonstone's Might:
-Moonstone's a bit tough to place, but I think PL 10 does right by her. She can challenge PL 11s like Ms. Marvel, but isn't overwhelmingly powerful on her own (I read an issue of "Captain America" where PALADIN of all people shot her down with a head-shot while he could barely see, though this was way before her T-Bolts push)- she's just an extremely versatile (Blast & Dazzle are pretty common, but Insubstantial?) Flying Brick AND a Blaster, meaning she's well-balanced across the board. Where she REALLY shines, though, is her Skills, which showcase a manipulative psychopath of the highest order, able to seduce just about anybody, and look good doing it. Persuasion AND Deception at +15 towards men is pretty scary.

-Note: At one point, she had a second Stone, a Gravity Stone, which added some powers as Alt-Effects- Teleport, Black-Hole Generation (Burst Blast?), Gravity Control and Force Fields, knocking her PL up a notch or two. She was strong enough to handle the Avengers & T-Bolts simultaneously for a while, so she was definitely incredibly powerful.

There was also this glorious bit where Tigra escaped from Moonstone by . . . well . . .

As for Moonstone herself, I kind of see her as a much better villain than a reformed hero (Songbird, Mach-1, Atlas and Jolt all being much better success stories), so it's easy to write off a lot of her character development from the later part of Thunderbolts as the memories of the earlier Moonstone wielders influencing her to be more heroic, and when she got two of them it effectively wiped the two Moonstones clean memory-wise, allowing her to resume her original personality.

She just makes a great evil, selfish and manipulative woman who has an extremely high opinion of herself, and thus gets frustrated when others treat her with a lack of respect. And she'll use whatever methods at her disposal to get power over people, sex included.

Costume wise I'd probably either stick with her second Thunderbolts costume (the more streamline version of her Meteorite uniform) or make some hybrid of her original outfit (complete with fin helmet) and that second T-Bolts costume.

They really showed the effort being put into the Thunderbolts as well. In their first appearance fighting the Hulk, when Moonstone as Meteorite spoke to the Hulk, the Hulk recognized her voice. Because she and the Hulk had fought a couple of times previously. Nice foreshadowing.

Also, I've got to say that Moonstone was a PERFECT villain for Carol Danvers, basically being the opposite of Carol . . . or at least, the Pre-Captain Marvel Carol.

Before, Carol was a selfless woman who just wanted to do her duty to her country, help others, and defend America from its enemies, including aliens. Her courage landed her in a situation where she got superpowers, and she used those powers selflessly to protect others. Then she got knocked down several times, sometimes by outside forces, sometimes by her own flaws, but she always got back up and tried to better herself, and she hit her peak during her 2006 Ms. Marvel solo series. And while not ashamed of her looks, Carol never used them to get her way, instead forming strong relationships based on trust and respect.

Meanwhile Moonstone was incredibly selfish, feeling that self-sacrifice was a sign of weakness. She used whatever means she could to get power over people, and cruelly used her position to make others feel weak to make herself feel strong. She stole her powers, and always sought to get more power, requiring alien influence to make her briefly a better person. She always blamed others for her problems, always condescended to everyone, and her healthiest relationship was with Hawkeye, which didn't really last long.

In short, Carol was a great person and a hero who earned everything she had through hard work and heroism, while Moonstone was a snake who got everything she had by manipulating people and theft.

Plus it lead to this awesome image:

Image

Man I miss that black costume.

Sadly, Carol these days seems a little more like Moonstone than her old self. She's shown she's willing to take advantage of her prior relationships to get her way (she endlessly takes advantage of Tony Stark's good will towards her, and he seems to show no hard feelings that she killed him once), she's much more snarky and authoritarian than before, she will get into problems and expect others to figure out a solution to them, she's quick to take offense, she doesn't think things through, she constantly think she's in the right, does little to no self-reflection on her mistakes, she has no trouble brutalizing her friends, she's gotten more than a little condescending, etc. Basically, in an effort to make her a big star in the Marvel Universe, they've done a lot of damage to her character.

I always thought the Thunderbolts tagline "Justice, like lightning" was really good. It's a lot more evocative than your boring "Earth's Mightiest Heroes" and the like.

Fun fact: Moonstone I is one of those guys I apparently skipped over, so that's an entirely new build, lol. I don't remember why he got missed before- maybe he just had a pretty small bio online?

The Fixer- Journeyman to Thunderbolt:
-The Fixer (there was another one- the guy who had Matt Murdock's father murdered for refusing to throw a fight) was a pretty generic Iron Man villain turned into one of those Journeyman Villain, jobbing frequently with Mentallo as his partner, and rarely used until the Thunderbolts came about. He either teamed with Mentallo or worked for THEM (an aspect of HYDRA, which later gave him the job of Chief Science Officer). They fought the Thing, and used the Time Machine in the Baxter Building to draw Deathlok into our time so that he would assassinate the President (... you have access to a TIME MACHINE and that's the best use you can think of for it?), but were beaten by the Fantastic Four. He & Mentallo faced Spider-Man & Professor X in Marvel Team-Up (they attempted to give the Prof's powers to Professor Power! That's fun to say!), then Captain America, then Iron Man & Ka-Zar. He joined the Masters of Evil during Under Siege, using him as Baron Zemo's right-hand man, building a device to control Blackout I and engineer the invasion of Avengers Mansion. He was replaced by the Super-Adaptoid temporarily, then escaped jail with Yellowjacket II, who spurned his advances and got attacked for it, leading to her heroic turn.

-Finally, with Thunderbolts, The Fixer got a push- hanging his name to "Techno", he was now a bald-headed Tech-Head guy, becoming a true Gadgeteer Genius, even inventing ways to alter the appearances of the team so they wouldn't be recognized. He wore a unique-looking suit of bulging armour that he used for his "Tech-Pac", which let him whip out various powers as the story demanded (basically he had Magic, but with technology and generally less powerful and ass-pully). He was killed quickly by Iron of the Elements of Doom, but transferred his consciousness to a new form, a mechanical body. Desperate to convince everyone (and himself, as Moonstone noted) that this was a great switch, he ended up turning to villainy again with Zemo leading him- the only member of the T-Bolts to do so. In the book, he was rather interesting as one of the few fully-evil members with no real thought to reforming, and someone that Zemo seemed to genuinely appreciate as a competent, loyal follower.

Techno Gets Weirder:
-Techno stayed in the book, however- he finally had a falling-out with Zemo, and infiltrated the T-Bolts by mimicking Ogre, who'd allied with them as a new tech-guy. However, he was destroyed by the new Scourge of the Underworld (Nomad), reforming in a cloned human body that needed the Tech-Pac to function. Calling himself the Fixer again, he joined the Redeemers- a government-backed team that was then slaughtered by Graviton- he survived, and was forced by Zemo to place his disembodied consciousness into a counterpart from Counter-Earth (god that book got weird). He was later recruited by Zemo in the second Thunderbolts series, helping him fight Genis-Vell and joined a Zemo-controlled roster once more.

-Later books would use him sparingly- he was part of the Fifty-State Initiative somewhere, and worked as a supervisor at the Raft prison. When the current T-Bolts met the original one, he proved so arrogant that he got into an argument with HIMSELF, ultimately killing him in a fit of rage! This stupid mistake caused him to modify himself to resemble "Techno" and join the original team, getting caught in a time loop. Naturally, this was later ignored and he was just a guy in the Pleasant Hill prison- eventually finding out that he and other villains were brainwashed into being "regular citizens" in an idealized community, he invented a machine to undo his and Baron Zemo's brainwashing. After that whole mess was over, he was arrested and recruited into the Winter Soldier's T-Bolts, fighting Zemo's new Masters of Evil before defecting to them.

-The Fixer as a whole is rather weird- like the Tinkerer, he can just be a "Background Guy" to explain where gear comes from, and he's a major-league genius who can even be used for Deus Ex Machinas. But his writing is so haphazard and willy-nilly that it's hard to get a real "feel" for the character- he's opposed Baron Zemo as many times as he's allied with him, and the next writer simply ignores what came before and makes him a generic evil guy again. And of all the T-Bolts, he's the one who went the hardest into "Back To Basics Syndrome", simply dropping his new name. I actually liked the fact that as Techno, he was a "Battlesuit with a difference", not just being Iron Man with a crappier outfit (see Dynamo, Crimson or Man, Titanium... hell, just look at Iron Man's Rogue's Gallery to see what I mean)- the "Tech-Pac" gives him a lot of options, while ensuring that he never gets too powerful- it's versatile, not high-level.

The Fixer's Skills & Tech:
-Wow, Variable and Shapeshift are expensive powers. He's got low levels of either, maxing out at 25-35 pp for his stuff (the Guided Missiles being pretty good, and he's got a fancy Summon as a Robot). Each form has slightly different powers, with the Robotic one being obviously a ways more expensive thanks to all the Immunities that form offers. This means that Fixer is a VERY over-costly PL 9, as he's no major battlefield operative, but very, very versatile, able to help out his team with just about any power in a pinch, but at mostly lower levels.

As much as I love Natasha, just what does she think she is doing so up close to Nefarius?

Distract him. The maneuver the M&M rulebook calls Aid.

Wow. The Fixer/Techno has gone through almost as many bodies as Ultron. You almost feel bad for him, until you remember he's evil.

Yeah, but Nefarius didn't say he was thirsty; he didn't ask for any Kool-Aid!

Yeah- I was mainly surprised that they'd gone with the weird "Time Travel" thing, plus him going back to "The Fixer" so regularly that there's almost nothing left of his T-Bolts identity.

DREADFUL, lol.

But yeah, she's probably there to make him waste a shot (she's so fast he'd have a lot of difficulty hitting her) or pull a "Teamwork" maneuver.
