Total: Abilities: 82 / Skills: 54--27 / Advantages: 20 / Powers: 43 / Defenses: 14 (186)

-Inque is sorta the Femme Fatale villain of Batman Beyond, and was one of its most notable villains to me. She's got an interesting concept, based off of all those Sandman/Hydro-Man types out there, but she's make of INK instead of a more common material. A lot of the same tricks, though, right down to being super-strong.

About the Performer: Australian actress Shannon Kenny is best known for her role in an '80s soap "Sons and Daughters".

Complications:
Motivation (Job)- The Society of Assassins punishes failure with death. As such, it is in Curare’s best interests to kill her targets.
Motivation (Survival)- When she fails to kill Gotham’s District Attorney, Curare’s life is now under threat. To counter-act the Society, she instead wants to defeat and brain-wipe the entire organization.

Total: Abilities: 58 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 22 / Powers: 8 / Defenses: 16 (122)

-Curare is a two-time "Batman Beyond" villain, appearing as a blue-skinned silent assassin trying to murder Gotham’s D.A. (who was also Commissioner Barbara Gordon’s husband). When she failed, she was then hunted by her failure-hating group, but she managed to wipe all of them out with brain-wiping or something. She had a bit more of an impact on the fanbase than a lot of Beyond's mooks.

-Curare is a high-skill PL 9 Assassin-type build with a Device Weapon, since she could do inhuman stuff with it (cut through nearly anything, and deflect BULLETS).

About the Performer: Melissa Disney (said to be related to Walt; exactly HOW has never been made clear) has the lead role in "As Told By Ginger" as her biggest role. Most of her other roles are in small parts, or in Video Games.

Complications:
Secret (Superhuman)- Powers has a synthetic skin built to simulate real flesh- in times of stress, he will "burn" it off and continue glowing green.
Motivation (Greed & Power)

Total: Abilities: 68 / Skills: 46--23 / Advantages: 19 / Powers: 85 / Defenses: 18 (213)

-Blight is the Mega-Villain of Batman Beyond- an evil Corrupt Businessman in the "Lex Luthor" vibe (enough to be kinda boring and redundant, actually- I mean, DC HAS ONE OF THESE GUYS ALREADY), but eventually he got more unique, being twisted into a Radioactive Freak Super-Villain. He fought Terry a few times, and got a long-running arc based off of his mutation, and eventually he was thought-dead by his Equally Evil Son, though Terry knew better.

-Blight is mega-powerful, and a PL higher than Terry for most of the show- PL 10 with a HUGELY powerful Aura makes him rather threatening. Powers is also an elite Businessman (even better than Bruce Wayne is), very smart, and very wise. This makes him a threat on multiple levels, enough so that Terry could almost never FIGHT the guy.

About the Performer: Sherman Howard is mostly a theatrical performer, appearing in a ton of things I've never heard of.

Inque was definitely the most memorable of Terry's villains for me; just the simple spin of making her living INK instead of just being elastic or mimicking water or the like. And she was fairly distinct visually as well. Blight really SHOULD have made more of an impression, but...his only motivations were "gain more wealth and power", followed by "returning to normal"; the "fiery living x--ray" bit is still pretty visually impressive, but quite a few other characters did it before Blight-the Blazing Skull, the Atomic Skull, Dr. Phosphorous, Negative Man/Woman, Cyclotron I, etc.

All my best

Complications:
Motivation (Greed)- Shreeve started out as a failed businessman, and was kept afloat by Derek Powers, and was thus willing to do his bidding.
Motivation (Revenge)- Permanently deafened after his first battle with Batman, Shreeve is now obsessed with hunting the Future Knight down.
Disabled (Deaf)- Shriek lost his hearing after first being defeated by Batman.

Total: Abilities: 40 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 33 / Defenses: 15 (117)

-Shriek was the villain of a very cool Batman Beyond Episode. A generic origin story (Scientist Needs Money, Commits Crimes) led to a really cool “Sound-Based Villain” schtick, and there was some REALLY good animation and design that went into his attacks- rather than fire off Big Pink Beams like Klaw does, or round orbs like Banshee & Siryn, Shriek fired out sound in it’s actual, silent form. All you saw was a giant cloud of debris get shoved out of the way.

-Also cool was the way that Shriek tried to have Bruce Wayne committed. He beamed “kill yourself, Bruce”-type stuff into Bruce’s head endlessly, convincing people that Wayne was nuts. Why did the first Batman realize that it wasn’t his own head screwing with him? “The voice called me Bruce. That’s not what I call myself.” AWESOME.

-Shriek is like most Batman Beyond foes- a PL 9 guy with a single gimmick. His show wasn’t really big on truly epic villains, and their motivations were often quite bland (Revenge, Greed, etc.), but using Sound as a high-powered weapon rather than mere Dazzles was pretty unique. He can either Blast or hit a long-range Area with his attacks. He’s also smart enough to create a sound weapon that blanked-out ALL THE VOICES

About the Performer: Chris Mulkey largely does bit parts (the biggest mention on Wikipedia is from the lead role in a Supertramp music video), but has had a REALLY long career.

-Aquagirl is the nicest person on the future Justice League, making nice with Terry before anyone else did. She's basically Aquaman with Hydrokinesis, which makes her about a hundred times COOLER than Aquaman, but I figure her for a good, over-pointed PL 10 thanks to being Super-Strong AND a Blaster. She basically mixes my Aquaman & Hydro-Man builds into one character.

About the Performer: LOL, I must have glossed this over last time I built the character. Jodi Benson is of course most well-known for playing ANOTHER aquatic female, in the beloved Princess Ariel in the Disney Renaissance's first hit, "The Little Mermaid".

-Warhawk was introduced in the "Batman Beyond" series as the Token Grumpy Teammate, meaning that he immediately took a dislike to Terry McGinnis when he was entered into the Justice League, and was generally the nastiest guy around. He saw the good in Terry eventually (once it turned out Superman had been controlled by Starro) and they made good. It wasn't until the "Justice League" series that we got to see Warhawk's origins- he was the son of John Stewart & Hawkgirl! I have no idea how far ahead they planned that, but it was a brilliant revelation. Made all the more sad when Hawkgirl asked Batman to "tell me about my son..."

-Warhawk's apparently tough enough to go toe-to-toe with Superman for a brief moment, so I guess he's super-strong. I have no idea where the Armour ends and he begins, however. He's basically a cheaply-pointed Power Fighter who can also fly.

About the Performer: Peter Oronati is one of those working actors with a massive resume, but nothing long-standing or notable about it. A lot of Voice Acting work.

Superman: TAS

Post by Jabroniville »

Superman: The Animated Series-

-Coming on the heels of like, 900 Batman incarnations, we got a Superman Animated Series by the same producers. Given the Bruce Timm style and a more human element, it seemed like a good idea, and it did decently enough. However, it never really gained the credibility that stuff like Heart of Ice had. To be fair, Superman is a MUCH harder character to write- he's more powerful, less grim (grim is easy to write; sunny is HARD), and much brighter than Batman ever seems to be- you have to write bigger threats, and have far less of a Rogues Gallery to work with, too.

Honestly, as I'm not that big a fan of "Superman the solo character", the show never held much appeal to me. I didn't watch many episodes the first go-around, so I had no nostalgic love for it, either. And finally watching most of the episodes (my DVD set was a tad faulty; I missed out on some), I noticed a lot of issues. The Rogues are more boring, aside from Luthor & Darkseid. The "Fourth World" stuff has to get added in to create some bigger threats, but the gods of New Genesis felt sub-par and under-utilized. Only Darkseid felt like he had ANY real pull or credibility at all- everyone else was just a generic goon- even Kalibak.

I also never really felt like we got into the character's HEAD like we did with Batman. We didn't see enough various aspects- just some clever ways he used to win fights. There were brief bits, like him being upset when "Clark" is killed ("I'd go crazy if I had to be Superman all the time!"), but even THAT got glossed over in favor of the Mystery of the Week- nothing like Perchance to Dream, where we get Batman's ideal fantasy life.

A good Superman thing needs a lot of great fights with awesome feats. And I just didn't see much of that, here. They went out of their way to make Superman more vulnerable and "human", and the scenes really lacked a lot of grandeur as a result, as much as it was a good idea to make the threats against him more credible. This is something Justice League, the follow-up show, slowly improved upon, as there were now some AWESOME heavy-hitting brawls in that series.

Ultimately, however, this show didn't end up with much of a legacy, beyond what got added in to the latter two series. Superman: TAS thus has the unenviable role of being the least-beloved show out of a PILE of shows set in the same universe- Batman: TAS had all the artistic cred, The New Batman Adventures kept it going (and had some good episodes, too), Batman Beyond is cherished by a whole generation (if only for its BAD-ASS opening sequence), and Justice League was like a Nerd Erection Fest of Awesome. Superman is just kind of THERE, with only a handful of really good episodes.

For my money, I'd put STAS behind BTAS but way ahead of TNBA. Bruce Timm never seemed to be into Superman the way he was into Batman, but Tim Daly did a good job with the character, and it easily had the best Metallo I've ever seen. Which isn't saying much, to be fair.

Power Loss, Weakness (All Powers, Kryptonite Exposure)- The dreaded green rock (which is VERY common at times) will neutralize Superman's powers, AND rapidly poison him.
Vulnerable (Magical & Electrical Attacks)- Superman loses his Impervious Toughness against either type of attack, and takes more damage as well. The former is quite obviously stated, but he DEFINITELY seems to be taking much more damage every time he gets electrocuted.
Power Loss (Red Sun Radiation)- Superman takes extra damage from Red Sun Radiation (Captain Atom figured this one out), and his powers will start to fade in proximity as well.
Power Loss (X-Ray Vision)- Kryptonian X-Ray Vision cannot penetrate Lead.
Relationship (Ma & Pa Kent, Kara)- Clark is very close to his family, and protective of his cousin.
Responsibility (Metropolis & The Earth)
Responsibility (The Main Hero of Earth)- Superman is an icon, and the things he does are often taken very seriously by the general public, even if he doesn't like it.
Enemy (Lex Luthor, Darkseid, Brainiac)
Reputation (Growing Power Base)- The League's advances are making very many people nervous.
Reputation (Boy Scout)
Responsibility (Feels Like He Lives in a World of Cardboard)- Superman has to constantly watch his power, in case he accidentally takes a life.

-I really liked the JLU Superman. In fact, he may be my favourite incarnation of Big Blue anywhere. This is mainly because, while clearly being the Big Daddy Superhero of the universe, he was both NOT unstoppable, and there was a very real chance of him screwing up and not just doing everything perfectly. All too often Superman comes in and renders the rest of his teams redundant because he's so great- his comics are among the most boring to read, because most writers want to tell Generic Super-Hero Stories with him, which requires the villains to kind of... HAVE A CHANCE in their fights. The best way to go is to go the "tell stories ABOUT Superman" route that Grant Morrison and others have, though this very easily falls into goofy-ass "Jimmy Olsen is a WEREWOLF and Superman has AMNESIA" storytelling for young children.

-The Timmverse Superman was strong, but barely strong enough to rescue a crashing 747. He was fast, but he couldn't punch a guy a dozen times in one second. He could beat any superhero ever in a one-on-one fight, but guys like Captain Atom could still fight him to a smashing stand-still. And in addition to that, they focused on the SKILLS of the guy, making him a survivalist in a future where his powers didn't work, and he was an excellent world leader. But still flawed. Deep down, he wasn't sure if the Justice League's total power was a good move, and he was tortured by the decisions he had to make. Sorta like Kingdom Come, but without killing millions.

-Regarding his own cartoon series- I never really saw much more than ten episodes back in the day, and I wasn't really impressed. It was possibly Early-Season Jitters before it "Grew the Beard" (Star Trek fanspeak for TV shows getting better over time), but I never liked it that much. Part of the issue was Superman's crappy Rogues Gallery. I don't care for The New Gods as characters, Parasite & Metallo are lame and silly-looking, Toyman is basically a weak member of Batman's rogues, and only Lex Luthor really stands out as a great villain. And then his Supporting Cast is full of guys like Perry White (basically 1/100th the character J. Jonah Jameson is) and Jimmy Olsen (boring superhero sidekick/fan insert character). I never even really liked Lois Lane. Altogether, the key problem is I just never CARED for Superman as a character or as a concept- I was always a Marvelite tried & true, and Supes was the big boring icon of the big boring DCU.

-Superman is obviously very effective as a hero, even if "reduced" to PL 12 status- He's just got SO many powers, and I really dislike the tendency of some posters to Alt-Effect the Heat Vision off of the Super-Strength (I mean, how does that even MAKE SENSE? Forget all the times he's lifted stuff while shooting his eye beams, what kinda power-reserve is he operating under?). He used to have TONS of Drawbacks (16 points' worth!), but 3e helpfully reduces all of that to a more handy Complications system. Otherwise, he has an insane number, and more than anyone else I've ever statted- his Complications are still longer than almost any other DC character. I think it fits, though- the comics tend to understate alot of his weaknesses, but in JLU, just being exposed to Kryptonite (a really common element here) meant he'd be out instantly. Magic & Red Sun Radiation still mess him up badly, he's vulnerable to electrical attacks (maybe not exactly- but as the writers joke, he got hit with one every other episode, and it ALWAYS left him hurting), etc. It's always been ironic how the most powerful superhero alive is also the one with the hugest set of drawbacks and limitations (GL even lost the Yellow Impurity for the show).

-Aside from his limitations, Superman's still a balanced offensive PL 12, being stronger than he is accurate (he's actually a remarkably good fighter in the series, partially due to his speed), but only with a +14 Damage bonus without hitting Power Attack. His Dodge & Parry are rather low, as he admits that he frequently takes damage just so others won't have to. Superman was strong, but his biggest punches were not shown to be any more devastating than several other attacks, notably Green Lantern's or Hawkgirl's. Note that his total strength is a rather low "thousand or so" tons, compared to the INSANELY high strength of the comic book verison- I could go as low as 400 tons and still seem to be world-accurate- they never really gave him a total limit).

About the Performer: Tim Daly voiced Superman in the "Animated Series", and was also a drug-addicted screenwriter on "The Sopranos"- a role I barely remember existing on that show. His biggest role is probably as Joe Hackett on "Wings", which ran for seven years on NBC- Ken Levine, whose blog I follow consistently, has spoken about how much he enjoyed that show, but its legacy is ridiculously tiny. He was Dr. Kimble in an ill-fated 2000s remake of "The Fugitive"- a one-year role that unfortunately lost him the Superman role in "Justice League"- he was replaced by George Newbern, who has largely done smaller roles. And the infamous "Theodore Rex". He's also the current voice for Sephiroth in the "Kingdom Hearts" games. Daly's Superman had a slightly deeper, more emphatic voice, while Newbern's was a touch lighter- ironically, as the character grew darker. But they were so similar in tone and style that many fans couldn't even tell the difference.

One of my personal challenges has always been to rebuild the DCAU Superman at PL10. While all the characters got a massive power boost with JLU, it was most noticeable with Supes that went from struggling to stop a cran to crash to pushing spaceships with his bare hands. One of my personal benchmark for this was The Late Mr. Kent (which was also one of the best episodes of the entire series), when Supes was slowed down by machinegun fire (feel free to take a moment to process this). In the context of the scene, it was clear that the bullets didn't injure him, but they were enough to hurt him, like being peppered with rubber balls.

Aside from that, I agree that one of the biggest problems with Supes is that the supporting cast is rather weak. In my eyes this came from the fact that, aside from Lois, they aren't linked to Superman, but rather to Clark and most authors seem to struggle to write good Clark stories.

I'm a broken record about this, but to my mind, all of Superman's problems have nothing to do with his personality, his powers, his villains or his supporting cast.

Personality wise, Superman is a paragon, a sincerely good person very much like Captain America. But where Steve's heroism is filtered through his patriotism and background as a soldier, Clark's heroism is filtered through his upbringing as a farmboy and a reporter. Clark's values come from the down home basic American values, concepts of hard work, of helping things grow, looking out for your neighbor, an "aw shucks" humility and helping out where you can. He's also got the curiosity and instincts of a reporter, being interested in people on a personal level, wanting to know and share their stories, to find out about injustices and either expose them or dealing with them.

It was a sign of how little the DC Cinematic Universe understood Superman when he was asked by a couple of kids what he liked most about Earth. His immediate answer should have been "The People". Superman, at his core, is someone who likes people, who wants to help people, to protect them and to encourage their better natures. It's a reason why the best scene in All-Star Superman, with all of its love of Silver Age shenanigans, is the simple scene of a dying Superman talking with a young girl contemplating suicide. Because Superman cares about everyone, and views no job as too small for him.

Superman, in essence, is the best of American values, but filtered through the lens of the common man rather than through the soldier, the way it is with Captain America.

Power wise, Superman got a solid selection of powers, but there are heroes with just a diverse or more diverse powers who have entertaining stories made about them. His powers can be an issue, but that's less to do with the powers themselves and what writers choose to do with them.

Villain wise, Superman's actually got a fairly solid rogue's gallery if anyone cares to use them properly. And like the best villains, many of them show darker aspects of Superman's character.

Lex Luthor is a reflection of Superman's "American Way" aspect and general ubermensch concept, but showcases the evils of America. Intelligence without compassion, industry without restraint, the ability to excel being merely a fuel for greed and fame. Luthor is a genius scientist, masterful manipulator and savvy businessman, a mortal without Superman's humility or compassion who sees the world as something merely to amuse his intellect and to heap praise onto him.

Brainiac ties into Superman's alien nature and curiosity, showing a truly alien intelligence, a Man of Tomorrow without Superman's humanity. Everything exists to satisfy Brainiac's own scientific inquiries: beings are to be examined, even dissected, cataloged and stored away like a book in a library. Intelligent beings have not value in and of themselves as anything other than data.

Mister Mxyzptlk is the concept of Superman's power without restraint, someone with absolute power and no sense of responsibility and seeks merely to amuse themselves.

Bizarro is Superman without his intelligence and self-awareness, showing how dangerous Superman could be without the restraint and ability to tell right from wrong that his parents instilled in him.

General Zod is Superman's Kryptonian nature gone bad, showcasing what Superman could be like if he hadn't been raised on Earth. "Truth, Justice and the American Way" become "Kneel Before Zod".

I don't actually consider Darkseid a Superman foe, as Darkseid is suppose to be much bigger than that. Darkseid is a foe for the entire DCU. He's someone the Justice League takes on, not an individual hero, even Superman. It's why I actually think Mongul has a purpose, since he can pose a major threat as a galactic despot with his own WarWorld who is still mostly "just" a Superman threat. Mongul is a big deal, but even he knows to get out of the way when Darkseid shows up.

So on and so forth. And even his jobbers can be entertaining if done right, such as Parasite, Metallo, Toyman, Livewire, Intergang, the Cyborg Superman, Lobo, Doomsday, Silver Banshee, Neutron, etc.

Superman's supporting cast was largely limited to Ma and Pa Kent, Lois, Jimmy and Perry White for the longest time, but a lot had been done in the 90s to expand it, and even recent additions such as Clark's son made Clark's life more fleshed out and interesting.

In my opinion, Superman's biggest problems arguably come from his status as the guy who basically codified the superhero genre. A lot of writers look at that and see Clark less as a character and more as a status symbol, and they place importance on Superman beyond his worth as a character. They literally write things into the story about how Superman is literally the center of existence, the most important character ever, and you can't DO THAT in a shared universe without shortchanging everyone else. These people don't want to write about "Superman the character", they want to write about "Superman, the first superhero and most important character ever", probably because doing so makes them important by extension.

Because when you put that kind of importance on Superman beyond his intrinsic worth as a character, you run into problems. Superman is so important that people want to put their stamp on Superman and make their changes a part of the character's history. It becomes a power fantasy where they aren't just writing about a great character, they're writing about the most important character ever. And when you get into that headspace, you suddenly have a hard time challenging the character "fairly".

You can't have anyone, ally or enemy, be as powerful or more powerful than Superman! He's the most important guy ever! You can't have Superman need help from any of his fellow heroes! He's the most important guy ever! You can't have him actually threatened by his opponents! You get the picture.

It culminates in things like Jeph Loeb's Superman and Supergirl runs which existed largely to showcase how much better Superman was than the rest of the DCU. You get stories like Infinite Crisis, Final Crisis and Doomsday Clock where Superman is literally the center of the universe. You get lazy solutions to problems where Superman just has to "cut loose" or "try harder" in order to beat someone. Even when his opponents "cheat", he can either muscle through it or is handed a solution.

Basically, by putting Superman up on this pedestal, they make him boring. By focusing on Superman as the icon rather than the character, they make the stories about Superman's status and importance to the comic industry rather than writing a character who should be inspiring and interesting.
