haha, NICE! Idina's so perf. I love her laugh.

Her scream is HILARIOUS. People are all like "So that's how Elsa screams" when it's this loud, high-pitched chirp of terror that sounds nothing like how I'd imagine Elsa's reserved ass belting out a scream. Though her laugh is of course far louder than Elsa's would be, too.

-Part of King of Fighters XIV's team of assorted newbies, the "Official Invitation Team", Mian is yet another bespectacled, socially-awkward Chinese character, which is odd as Samurai Shodown just debuted one of those characters, too. This is sorta like Master Raven & Darli Dagger coming out very close together- like someone wants to "I Want One, Too" about these types. Mian is a dancer in Sichuanese Theater, a Chinese school of acrobatic dancing that involves a lot of changing masks. She fights in order to pick up money for a sick relative, though this manifests itself in-game as a lot of money-chasing greed, reading financial papers and things about exchange rates. All in all, I think she's an okay character, with a wild outfit you could only find in a 3-D game, but very unfocused at this point.

-... SIGH.

-So Sylvie Paula Paula is another one of those "Goofy Fanservice Girl In A Wild Outfit" thing that's so emblematic of Japan, which combines perversion with childishness of a bizarre fetishization of youth. Her outfit is inspired by Kyary Pamyu Pamyu, who is known for her various outfits based off of the fashions of the Harajuku district (which is really cool to visit- a narrow-ass street full of bizarre clothing shops, totally sketchy merch-carts and a Disney Store hidden up a stairwell. Also a store that sold giant cotton candy before that hit the West). She's a member of the now-defunct NESTS cartel, joining the series in King of Fighters XIV after being discovered by tournament organizers. I... don't know why she's actually there. She naturally hit KoF XIV and the SNK Heroines game.

-Sylvie has some pretty basic flippy moves... and can use Chi, being one of the few characters with a "Reach" attack.

-This guy could be... not bad? I guess? He's a skinny, slender oddball with his hands always in "chop" position, but he's almost stylish enough to fit into an SNK game. He's the member of a mysterious secret society and has a totally hidden identity. His attacks all use sand- his Blast & Teleport both involve it. He was hired by Elisabeth to enter the King of Fighters XIV tournament for the purposes of rescuing Ash, who's trapped within Verse, the Final Boss. Their mission successful, he appears as part of the "Ash Team" in the next game, one of VERY few KoF XIV originals to get the nod on the next game's roster. Apparently he curses a lot in Story Mode, which catches people more used to "Hey- C'MON C'MON!" dialogue in these games).

Kukri was also curiously used as the boss of SNK Heroines (the recent all-girls fighting game that I'm pretty sure they mostly repurposed assets from XIV to make), and the reason for that game's "plot" (he's the one who gathered all the fighters in that game) Also, something interesting: Three of the newcomers from XIV had their faces deliberately obscured to save on facial modeling and production costs. (since they had to make models and animations for everyone, old and new due to the switch to 3D models) I'm not sure which ones they are, though: I know that Kukri is one of them. I would have said MIan, but she does remove her mask during her Super.

The Ikari Warriors

Post by Jabroniville »

IKARI WARRIORS:
Release Date: 1986
Developer: SNK

-One of the curious, and often forgotten, things about the King of Fighters franchise is how it also utilized characters from other SNK games that WEREN'T fighting-themed! Ikari Warriors is actually a vertically-scrolling "Run & Gun" type of game, featuring Ralf (red) and Clark (blue) as gun-toting heroes. The game heavily knocked off the game Commando, and was simply titled Ikari ("Fury") at first. The two may enter tanks or helicopters, and fight an unrelenting horde of enemies- the game itself featured the first rotary joysticks on an arcade cabinet, allowing the characters to face in any direction while moving in another. It proved to be SNK's first breakout hit, and spawned the sequels Victory Road and Ikari III: The Rescue. They also cloned the game in 1987 to make Guerilla War, in which you played FIDEL CASTRO AND CHE GUEVARA as the main heroes!

-The games disappeared around 1989, and I've never heard of them outside the history of KoF, but Ralf & Clark were added to the game along with a commanding officer character, Heidern.

Weakness (Predictability)- SNK Characters cannot simply "spam" out the same attack over and over again, as the opponent will expect the attacks, and be ready for them (and a counterattack). -Heidern is always a character I thought was SUCH garbage- a flavorless, boring design I considered a rip-off of M. Bison at the time. SNK seems to have agreed, and almost constantly dumped the guy- within a couple of years, they'd created Leona, who easily replaced him in King of Fighters '96 and many other versions of the game. However, circumstances often saw them bringing him back- KoF '98 was the "Dream Match" edition, and so he joined the "Old Man Team" alongside Takuma (who'd also been dropped) & Saisyou. Missing for the next two years again, KoF 2001 was now comprised of FOUR-MAN teams, so he had to be brought out of the mothballs to join the Ikari Warriors in the field once more. One more appearance in this incarnation was left, and then he disappeared for four games in a row, popping up only as DLC in the most recent version- KoF XIV. So it really seems like SNK also didn't like the character's style- otherwise why dump him so early and regularly?

-That said, the CHARACTER isn't that bad. Heidern is actually based off of the Heidern character from Space Battleship Yamato, a nationalistic propaganda sci-fi anime that featured this villainous character as part of the blue-skinned baddies (the Bison resemblance is owing to the popularity of their jackbooted militaristic uniforms, popular among villains in anime & manga long before Bison debuted). Their uniforms are very much the same. Heidern was initially going to be played up as a similar sort of guy- a remorseless killer- but the developers "fell in love" with him and made him much more benevolent. He thus led the "Ikari Team" alongside Ralf & Clark, the heroes from Ikari Warriors. He left after two games, and a suddenly-introduced adopted daughter replaced him- Leona was meant to be a much bigger deal, though Heidern was always leading the team in the backdrop.

-Heidern is thus watching things during the Orochi Saga (his main opponent, Rugal, is instead killed fighting other people), then the NESTS Saga, where he sends the Ikari Warriors to destroy the evil cartel. Again, his team is but a minor notion in the plot, but he's also got information for Seth, Vanessa, Ramon & Blue Mary- kind of a general "behind the scenes" leader. He is DLC in KoF XIV, and makes a surprising return to the series in KoF XV as part of the "Rival Team", oddly joining Isla & Dolores is their attempts to find Shun'ei, the other person with Isla's Amp-Powers.

-Heidern has a very odd fighting style, much different from that of Ralf & Clark- he's a slender, more athletic fighter, tossing out a weird half-circle of energy (almost a temporary Aura) called the Moon Slasher, an X-shaped blast called the Cross Cutter (made by slicing the air with his hands in the pattern and sending it out, in a cool notion), and more. Leona copied most of his offense so it wouldn't be "lost" when his character was dropped. An early bug in KoF '94 saw his Storm Bringer do 100% damage if he'd failed the Moon Slasher beforehand- the most recent game includes an option to boost its power if the same circumstances are met. Heidern, like Guile & Chun-Li from Street Fighter, is much more expensive than most other fighters, by virtue of having far more well-rounded skills as a part of his military background- he has the Mental Abilities, Ranged Attack, and Investigative skills that most simple brawlers won't have.

Ikari Warrors also had an NES release which was very popular at the time, but definitely shows its warts now (there was no rotary motion, and the protagonists moved slowly, making it extremely difficult to evade incoming fire).

A bit late to the party, but seeing Iori reminds me of just how full on Shonen Anime KoF went with their original characters. Kyo is "nice but really wants to win guy with the special heritage", Iori is the "dark, cool reflection with the superpowered evil side", you've got the big, dumb, jolly but reliable one, the smooth talking ladies man with the wild hair, etc.

It's also weird that with all of the impractical outfits I've seen fighting game characters wear, from high heels to floor length capes to cocktail dresses, it's the stupid belts between the legs that bug me the most and seem the least practical. It just looks stupid to me rather than stylish. I want to come up with some logical reason for its existence that is just as stupid.

[in Christian Bale Batman Voice]
"One day during a fight, I faced an opponent who was agile as a monkey. During the battle, he darted between my legs and attacked me from behind before I could turn around. It was the closest I've ever come to defeat. Since that day, I've worn these belts on my knees so that no one will ever get between my legs."

*snickers from the background*

"Why does everyone laugh when I get to that last part?"
"My heart is as light as a child's, a feeling I'd nearly forgotten. And by helping those in need, I will be able to keep that feeling alive."
- Captain Marvel SHAZAM! : Power of Hope (2000)

Maybe he's kind of generic, but I rather like Heidern. I feel like he also takes some inspiration from the "Colonel" character from Fist of the North Star, what with the moveset based around slashing with his hands being rather like the "Nanto Seiken" martial arts often used by villains in that series.

As a kid the Ikara Warriors team was my go-to choice, thanks to the fact that Ralph and Clark used the same moveset. Heiden was often my meat-shield, since I never really mastered his moveset. Weirdly enough my friends adn I were absolutely convinced that his neck-inger move was based on strangling people with a piano wire.
"You're right. Sorry. Holy shit," I breathed, "heckhounds.”

They're bondage pants . It's a punk thing that bled into Industrial and Goth. I'm pretty sure that Iori has them to be part of the (evil) cool counterculture, as updated to Kyo in his best school uniform.

One thing I did like was that it factored into his movesets. He couldn't kick high without being acrobatic about it (and I'm pretty sure he had a dropkick attack that highlighted that).

oh, haha- I forgot he had a more direct reference. That's part of the "guys who look like Bison" thing that shows up in countless shonen-related things, as Kinnikuman had the Nazi hero (yes) Brocken, who inspired the World Heroes character who most dismiss as a "Bison Rip-Off", when Bison's just the most famous of a LONG list of these guys. But yeah, that dude is way more Heidern.
