VULCAN (Gabriel Summers)
Created By:
Ed Brubaker & Trevor Hairsine
First Appearance: X-Men: Deadly Genesis #1 (Jan. 2006)
Role: The Caligula
Group Affiliations: The Shi'ar Empire, The X-Men
PL 14 (241)
Man, I HATE Vulcan. I understand that the writers wanted him to be a major villain, but they made him such a cosmic level douche that he was too unlikable to even be a decent villain, despite his power level and built-in rivalries. I'm sure he'll be back soon enough, but I was really glad they offed him in War of Kings.

In my head-cannon, Vulcan and Sentry already encountered each other in deep space and killed each other off permanently. The end.

Yes, I dislike both of those characters THAT much.

So... Just took the Youngest of my Young Warfs to see Moana this afternoon. We both loved it. I think Jab's right that this won't dethrone Frozen, but this film will be a hit... and every following on the success of Princess and the Frog, Brave, Frozen and now Moana I think it's safe to say the ballroom gown-clad vaguely Regency Era meets Renaissance Period "Princess Classic" is a dead trope within the House of Mouse.

Also, I'm vaguely disappointed to learn that the refrain from my favorite tune "We Know the Way" was not in fact "away, away" which I had assumed or the much more pun-tastic "a way aweigh," that I came up with because I am a maritime nerd. Nope, apparently it's "aue aue," part of a real Polynesian prayer. Which is awesome, don't get me wrong, and still a pun (I can't be the only one that noticed it's a homophone for "away").

I'm rambling... That's Jab's job.

I wanna write the epic, star-spanning story that has these two building up their power in the backstory in order to do something... then accidentally run into each other, fight, and kill each other with nobody else having known what happened, or them ever having mattered to the plot.

You, HJ and I are Lust Triplets!

Heh, and still remember saying Mrs. K was hot when I did Simpsons builds, and Kreuz disagreed, using one episode as an example. I was all "oh, you wanna engage in Simpsons Trivia with ME, do you??" and promptly listed like five episodes, a DVD commentary, and Matt Groening's own How To Draw book as examples on my side.

Seriously, when it comes to Simpsons trivia, ain't none of you want a piece of this.

And now... the latest in my long attempt to get all of my builds posted onto the same threa... goddammit.

-Well, ANYWAYS, the main purpose of my "Marvel Glossary" builds was to fill the gaps and really stat up everybody worth statting at Marvel- the characters who slide through the cracks. And also to re-post the other guys who hadn't been re-posted from the original Atomic Think Tank message board. So even though we're on a new message board only a couple years after I was on the "Ronin Army" one, some of the ATT builds are still more than a couple years old, so I think it's okay to re-post them. I'm no longer anal-retentive about putting everything in one place (I HATE "Spamming Out" builds normally- part of the fun is waiting for the comments and seeind what everyone things about the characters... so I wouldn't even WANT to just blast out all the old builds).

-Another purpose to the Glossary builds was so give myself a breather every once in a while- it's a heck of a lot easier to throw down a handful of older builds. It's a nice break to just post up the goofs from S.U.R.F. or the third Scorpion instead of having to look up another obscure guy. That said... doing a re-post can take MUCH longer than you'd think, particularly when it's a semi-important character, because then I want to go over the stats again, or re-read Wikipedia's bios. I'll never forget re-posting my X-Men builds and discovering that it took a lot more effort than I thought to re-read things and check.

-So, in the end... I figure it's just a handy way to "re-post" something every couple of years or so. The occasional "old build" will be at LEAST two years old by this point, and probably much longer. Enough time has passed for some brand-new snark or some new insight from some who don't remember the last time I posted him, or for some people who are new and don't feel like re-reading my ENTIRE archives (god knows I don't wanna do that).

-A lot of these builds will be "Four Post A Day", which seems insane except for the aforementioned "re-post" thing, plus the fact that some of these Jobbers only lived for a single story or two before dying. Not the most complicated of work.

MARVEL: THE LETTER "S":
-Our language's curviest letter, "S" originally only noted the "Short s", until taking over the "Long s" (which looked kinda like an "f"- ſ) around the fourteenth century. It is the seventh most common letter in English, and the third-most consonant, particularly since it helps pluralize letters.

-With many of the other letters, it's slim pickings as far as finding characters whose names start with that letter goes. "V" is left with Vision and a couple of other characters like Vindicator. The letter "S"? Oh, how about SPIDER-MAN? Or the Spider-Women? The Sandman, The Silver Surfer, Storm, The Scarlet Witch, The Scorpion, The Sentry (BARF), Shadowcat, Shang-Chi, She-Hulk, Sebastian Shaw, and more. This is a part of the index that provides some huge, HUGE names.

-The Scarlet Spiders come from the very good, but sadly forgotten, Initiative book Marvel put out in the wake of the first Civil War. Now, I actually liked this concept- instead of dumping the Iron Spider armour (that Spider-Man briefly wore) into the mothballs, it actually uses what is at heart a pretty awesome character design (it's not that great compared to the Red or Black Spidey costumes, because those are the BEST COSTUMES EVER, y'know, but on its own, the Iron Spider is sweet), combining it with both Ben Reilly's legacy AND that of Michael Van Patrick (a one-off character killed in the first Initiative issue, despite apparently having the Perfect Physique of Captain America), creating all sorts of little things. They obsess over not having a dad/identity (aka "Cloning Blues"), try to play nice with a quite-peeved Peter Parker once he sees this blatant trademark violation, and then go out... and act as Cannon Fodder. See kids, this is why you never join TEAMS where you all look identical. One Clone got wiped out by the Thor-clone "Clor", aka "Ragnarok", and another was killed by K.I.A. (another clone of M.V.P.). So yeah, both offed casually by Teamwrecking super-threats that required a massive group effort by DOZENS of Cannon Fodder minor-league Supers to bring down. The last Scarlet Spider is still alive, actually, hopefully to become a character in his own right... but that never really happened, and he got ignored.

-The Scarlet Spiders are pretty decent, but still kind of scrub-like. They have a TON of powers in that Armour, but not many that amount to much more than very-expensive PL 8s. They combined M.V.P.'s physical stats with the Iron Spider Armour, also copying some of Peter Parker's natural powers like Wall-Crawling and Web-Slinging. This makes them PL 8 all-around, which seems about right. Two fatalities means that they don't have nearly high enough Defense Bonus to be proper "Spidey"-type guys. I also invented a "Mental Control" Device Feat to explain those times you can control armour from across the room or something- it's not in Ultimate Power (or listed in 3e from what I can see), but seems about right. I know I've seen it in some "official" builds somewhere or another since I first made a build like this.

Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +8, Fortitude +8, Will +8

Complications:
Involuntary Transformation (Rick Sheridan)- Though the two are separate entities, Sleepwalker may only exist on the Earthly plane when Sheridan is asleep. Sheridan, a very busy Film Studies college student, building superintendent, English-As-A-Second-Language instructor, and boyfriend to Alyssa Connover, is probably awake a little too often for Sleepwalker's needs, and Sleepwalker will fade from reality the second Sheridan wakes up.
Prejudice (Alien Appearance)- Sleepwalker is a big noseless green guy, and tends to provoke fear in normal humans, even when he's clearly protecting them.
Responsibility (Will Not Use the Warp Gaze Upon Living Beings)- The Gaze is horrendously-painful to human beings, and so Sleepwalker endeavors never to use it as such.
Power Loss (Warp Gaze)- The Warp Gaze loses power over time- greater uses of it's power (Power Attack, full ranks, etc.) will use it up more quickly. It is replenished by rest.
Power Loss (Strength)- Sleepwealker's strength diminishes the further into the air he rises.
Addiction (Light)- A certain frequency of light caused Sleepwalker to undergo hallucinations that he later became addicted to in a "Drugs are BAD, M'Kay?" storyline.

Total: Abilities: 74 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 66 / Defenses: 14 (168)

-Sleepwalker is a character I'd long avoided statting- any bios that listed his powers seemed to imply they were very complex, he was a REALLY minor character, and thus I actually skirted doing him, the same way I avoided Ghost Rider for years. I never really got into him during his run in the 1990s, as since I was only familiar with 90% of the Marvel Universe through their extremely gnarly Marvel Cards, I had to find out about him through his Series II Rookie Card. And it kind of sucked and made him look weak. The art wasn't overly great, something that extended to his Series III card, and the only real comic I have of him is the self-parodyingly guest-starry Spider-Man: Revenge of the Sinister Six story that Erik Larsen did (it was an AWESOME story, too). And in THAT story, Sleepwalker literally shows up to hang out with Spidey, Hulk & Ghost Rider, only to vanish halfway through the battle because his human host woke up! That was all he got to do in that story! And as a result, I had zero interest in Sleepwalker for my entire life.

-That's actually pretty common amongst comic fans, from what I discover- almost NOBODY talks about this book (which had mostly Monster Of The Week stories in addition to fights against his arch-nemesis, Cobweb), and this is an industry hella-prone to Red Guardian Syndrome (aka "Getting Obsessed Over a Minor Character"). However, I HAVE heard the occasional rumbling that the series was actually really good, and that it deserves more love (its TV Tropes page was obviously written by a big fan, like a lot of TV Tropes pages- it's either big fans or total Haters on that site). One obvious big fan is Robert "Invincible" Kirkman, who not only was planned to write a new Sleepwalker series in 2004, but he named one of his multitude of background characters Rick Sheridan in homage to this character's human host! All that for a character who went over a decade between appearances from the 1990s to 2000s.

-Bob Budiansky created Sleepwalker in the 1970s (he was originally called "Alien" until a certain movie came out with that title), but shelved him until Neil Gaiman's Sandman came out- Marvel thus released the series. The book lasted from 1991 to 1994, and about thirty-three issues- not a great run, considering most of the awful books that era lasted at least as long during the Pre-Crash period of comics. Sleepwalker comes from The Mindscape, a dimension that borders the dreams of sentient beings- he's one of many Sleepwalkers, chosen Dream Police (now I got Cheap Trick stuck in my head), defenders of mankind from the evil creatures that inhabit that frightening realm. He was trapped within the mind of college student Rick Sheridan by his arch-nemesis Cobweb, and forced to appear on Earth only while Rick slept. He had a lot of fights with low-end characters, but primarily fought Cobweb excessively- in their final battle, Cobweb was banished, and Sleepwalker was freed from Rick's mind. However, Back-To-Basics Syndrome reared its ugly head, and despite the character being a non-entity for years, he suddenly reappeared, still trapped within Rick's mind.

-Sleepwalker is your standard '90s hero in Power Level, making a decent PL 9 with some Afflictions and Super-Strength. He excels at beating Demons & Mindscape Monsters and the like, however, being much stronger at fighting them. His powers are also a swack of weird stuff, consisting of weird Snares, Power-Boosting (he helped out in The Infinity War by boosting Marvel's Telepaths through the mind of Rick Sheridan), Illusions, Mental Power Nullification, and more.

So, if you took one of your wharfs to see a kids movie, were you giving in to pier pressure?

Not bad. Cod do batter, IMO. I trout us buoys and gils were better than this... we should probably scale back on these fish puns though. No squidding, this is really going overboard now. Still, if you think of any others, let minnow.

Coming up with a news fish puns is a pain in the bass!
