Disney may not want to admit it, but they made it.
The list would get even longer if they included Disney's live action movies and Nightmare Before Christmas (which does count as a Disney movie, if Kingdom Hearts is any indication)

Man, this set is making me nostalgic :)... for the last time I did Disney Builds. Back in 2013, we still had The Movie Studio in my neighbourhood. As the only person in the universe who doesn’t use Netflix, I still rented from that location. And, as they rented out movies from the Kids Section for $1 each, this made for a few months of cheap, easy viewing. A handful had gone missing (the infamous Disney Vault meant that the video store was the only way to watch many flicks, so it was common for people to just steal the big names), so I had to go to ANOTHER local shop for Beauty & The Beast.

Within the year, the second shop closed down. And then, another few years later, The Movie Studio followed. Without that place, I’d have never seen COUNTLESS pictures, from mainstream ones to anime, etc. The whole “go to the store and see find something to watch” experience will pretty much fade into memory now, and our kids will never know what a video store was like.

Fuck YOU, Netflix.

And now Disney is making their own streaming service, so they've been taking their stuff off Netflix and other services.

It’s on my list, but it’s not part of the Animated Canon, and never was. Too live-action-y.

Complications:
Motivation (New Ideas)- Walt was constantly moving from one idea to the next- new forms of animation, robotics, movie-making, even CITIES. If it was new, Walt wanted to be a part of it. Building one thing made him want to build a NEW thing immediately afterwards, improving upon the last one.
Responsibility (Walt Disney Studios)- Walt's company was often in dire straights financially, and his aforementioned love of new ideas often had to be tempered by the realities of just how you PAY for certain things. Downturns in the economy often affected him terribly.
Motivation (Power)- Walt infamously loved to get his way- crossing the boss was the surest way to see yourself out of work.
Hatred (Unions)- Walt wanted his employees to be paid little and work for the love of working. He fired even popular animators for suspected "union activities".
Reputation (Hard to Work For)- Walt was an ardent perfectionist, and anyone not meeting his high standards would immediately hear about it. This, and the above Complication, gave him a very nasty reputation that still holds to this day. He was never known for giving excessive praise- "That'll work" was considered the best of the best when it came to him- he expected his good words to others would be carried forward to the recipient, but never gave praise in person.
Relationship (Family)- Walt was very close with his older brother Roy, and was shattered by the deaths of his parents (dying of carbon monoxide poisoning in a home he'd bought for them).
Reputation (Anti-Semite)- Walt was never known to be anti-Semitic throughout his life (many Jews worked at his company), and even people who HATED him never made the claim, but keeping friendships with people and organizations that were caused this reputation to stick with him. That most of Hollywood had Jews in powerful positions, and most writers were Jewish, let this joke propagate.
Addiction (Tobacco)- Walt died very young, pretty much because he LOVED to smoke.
Hatred (Pointing)- Walt HATED pointing in real life. To this day, Disney employees are trained to always point with more than one finger at a time.
Secret (Public Persona)- Walt had many facets, and showed different ones to different people. He played the "bashful millionaire" in public, and could be self-deprecating, but was aware he was doing so. He talked about his public image often ("Walt Disney does not smoke. I smoke. Walt Disney does not drink. I drink."). Many people still aren't sure which one is the REAL Walt Disney.

Total: Abilities: 24 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 0 (45)

-Walt Disney himself is a fascinating character study- a man of many sides, prone to exaggeration even decades after his death. To this day, some people hate him with a passion, with some "historians" actually bringing up various dark stories about his true nature everywhere they can. Though certainly many people who knew him detested him- Walt was a bad man to cross, especially as he held all the power in his company. But as he has detractors, he also has ardent defenders- people who WILL NOT brook any insult against the man. Any documentary or book about Disney will be immediately met by both camps, one of which will hate how nice the thing made him look, while the other one derides how it paints their hero in a negative light. To this day, Disney Parks fans especially always harp on "What Walt Would Want", as if they knew the man themselves.

-Disney was an ardent perfectionist and a complete Idea Man personified. Though he himself wasn't a particularly gifted artist, who knew how to get the best out of people, and his ideas were always second to none. Who ELSE would dare to turn a medium designed for silly animated shorts and make a FEATURE PRODUCTION? And then throw things on their ear a couple of years later with an "All-Musical" series of shorts set over classical music? Or risk everything to build a monstrous Theme Park just because he got an idea while sitting bored on a park bench one day? Walt was also obsessed with "Plussing"- taking something good and trying to figure out how to wring one more bit of quality out of it.

-Walt was of course known for other quirks- his obsessive desire for "The New" led to the creation of EPCOT, which was originally supposed to be a functioning micro-city. Things like this gave him a reputation as a weirdo, which is where the whole "Walt Disney had himself frozen" myth came from. Walt in fact died very young- at only 65- during a time when the studio was churning out cheaper animated features. His brother Roy kept the company running, as always, but Walt was silenced forever, with people only able to go on what they THOUGHT he would want. Expect proper Disney Snobs to all declare "What WALT would want" every time they disagree about something- "WALT would want these attractions to stay in their original form!" "No, WALT wanted Disneyland to constantly evolve and try new things, getting rid of the old!", etc.

So for these builds, instead of working out a complicated set of tiers and a posting order , I’m going to be posting the movies CHRONOLOGICALLY. This actually works out pretty well in terms of not spamming out all the good ones at once, though of course the Renaissance Era is pretty stacked with big names.

... Tatsuie040?

This is a question that Disneyphiles have been bitching about FOR AGES, usually to justify their own personal beliefs on what Disney should be doing.

The problem is, Walt died in 1966, and so we'll never know. We know what he was LIKE- a micromanager. Hard to please. Never gave praise. And ALWAYS moving from one thing to the next, regardless of the money (that was Roy's job. I was gonna stat up Roy- his Business skills were FAR in excess of Walt's- but his secretive nature made it impossible).

He's absolutely have loved Computer Animation, and probably would have pushed for it sooner. Either buying up Pixar or forging ahead himself.

His big focus was on EPCOT as a COMMUNITY, so that dream would probably not die. He'd have micromanaged the area around Disney World to a huge degree.

By this point, we would ABSOLUTELY have a "Disney City". He'd probably move into space exploration, or what life in space would be like.

He's probably be annoyed by the stagnation of the company. I mean, it's doing better than it ever did while he was alive, but the fact that it's STILL just a "Parks & Movies" company would have probably irked him. Too limiting, boring, and static.

The Parks? Nobody has a clue. "What Would Walt Do?" is the thing EVERYONE fights over. Change the napkins to be plain white instead of stuff with characters on them? "Walt would NEVER have done that!". The era of cheapening the parks? "Walt would ALWAYS be pushing forward!". The trouble is, Walt was such an "Idea Man" that as soon as he was distracted, he let someone ELSE handle all that stuff- some of the '50s movies were given almost entirely over to others, because he was now making LIVE-ACTION films and his focus was there.

Watching "Defunctland" on YouTube is great stuff. Eisner comes off as such a soulless douchebag on them and it's hilarious: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=msbBGwXb9Zs

MICKEY MOUSE:
First Appearance:
1928

-Mickey Mouse debuted in 1928, created by the famous Walt Disney himself, and his artistic collaborator Ub Iwerks (who is so unknown that friggin' BILL FINGER would heap pity on him)- he's largely a knock-off of Walt's "Oswald the Lucky Rabbit" character, who belonged to another production company. In fact, Walt's firing and the losing of his creation (to Charles Mintz of Universal Studios) is what informed a LOT of his later decisions. In this case, Walt declared that from then on, he would ALWAYS own his own creations. So he shaved off his rabbit's ears and made him a Mouse (his wife talked him out of naming the guy "Mortimer"), giving him the same screwball, assholish personality. The early Mickey shorts were wildly popular, but the character became kinder and gentler as the years went on- the first set of cartoons look absolutely bizarre to modern eyes, as we're just not used to this Beloved Corporate Icon torturing cats and dogs to create song melodies.

-Mickey grew into a much blander character later on, as Walt, who voiced the character until the 1940s, wanted him to be more of a "role model" for children, which led to Walt's frustration that Donald Duck and Goofy, two much more dynamic, extreme characters, became a lot more popular. In fact, the Mouse was almost considered "old hat" and washed-up after a point, but a concentrated effort was made to re-energize him with movies (Fantasia featured the famous Sorcerer's Apprentice short) and, after another downturn in popularity, the Mickey Mouse Club TV show (the first of which made stars of Annette Funiccello and others; the more modern one debuted Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake AND Christina Aguilera, as it was essentially a Star Factory for wannabe Teen Idols in Hollywood's super-creepy "Star System"). Eventually, Mickey became the Ultimate Corporate Icon of Walt's company, and the central "Meet & Greet Character" at every Theme Park. Nowadays, Mickey is more of a symbol than a character- often overlooked for the other Disney characters- you'll noticeably find MUCH more merchandise in the parks & stores starring Tinker Bell, Belle, Snow White, Cinderella, Aurora, Jasmine, anyone from Frozen, and now dozens of Marvel and Star Wars characters.

-Mickey's status as Corporate Icon makes him the butt of a lot of jokes, as he is effectively a stand-in for the company itself- bland, overly-groomed and childishly simple. He isn't really IN a lot of things anymore, except for a lot of the more childish Disney Junior TV shows (in which he stars in two or three at a time- one of them is about race cars; another about his friends playing with Mouse-ke-tools to solve problems). South Park got a to of mileage out of using Mickey as the foul-mouthed Evil Overlord of Disney. People make fun of how bland he is (Walt championed the Mouse, but failed to realize just WHY the other characters soon eclipsed his popularity), leading to a modern reinvention as a weird, Ren & Stimpy-like glutton for punishment once more.

I always cringe every time I see Mickey in the red shorts and it's kind of funny how the 1940 super-kid friendly version of him became pretty much the standard for US audiences. In many parts of Europe and South America Disney is known for comics as well as animation (something that apparently Walt himself wasn't particular keen of).
The comicbook version of Mickey that is still going in most other countries was heavily inspired by the work of Floyd Gottfredson, who turned many details about the character around. Comicbook Mickey doesn't wear the red shorts and, rather than being the happy-go-lucky role model for little kids, is often portrayed as a journalist or a detective (often a combination of the two). It's also not uncommon for him to take the backseat to his bast pal Goofy, in a sort of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza scenario, where Mickey is the logical sidekick to the improbable hero. This is especially true in vast series of fantasy and sci-fi themed stories (the first created by Jerry Siegel, who worked for Disney Italia in the '70s).

Unfortunately the diktats of uncle Walt were never forgotten and many writers that worked on Mickey found themselves constricted by them. The simple idea that Mickey should always triumph in the end (opposed to Donald Duck) pretty much limited the possible storylines and endings. In Italy there were two big attempts to break this mold. The first was the Mickey Mouse Mistery Magazine (or MMMM), a limited series of 8 (originally 12) issues that moved Mickey away from his usual stomping grounds and dropped him at Anderville, a city that made Gotham City looks like an amusement park. With no friends and little money, Mickey was forced to think on his feet and really dig into years of work as an amateur detective to make a living. What hampered this project was the fact that a number of episodes included a "final scene" revealing that the entire story was, in fact, just a movie, which killed the effectiveness of the narrative. The second -- and so far most successful -- attempt is the brainchild of one Alessandro "Casty" Castiello, a writer, who went the extra 100 miles to show the darker sides of Mickey and his world, while remaining true to a really positive spirit. In Casty's interpretation, Mickey is an optimist, but not one that is unaware of how dark and scary the world can be.
"You're right. Sorry. Holy shit," I breathed, "heckhounds.”

hah- now THAT'S interesting. I've heard that the Mickey comics were rather good in some places- one I have features a little "World Tour" aspect, where he and Minnie go around trying to find some archaeological thing, and have to do research about real-world countries. Compared to all the bland "Help Others" adventures he has in American cartoons, it was a neat look at how much more he could be.

Nowadays, you NEVER see these comics in North America. When I was in France, they still had the Barks/Rosa Ducks-related stuff visible in some places, but no Mickie.

While Mickey has always been an icon, he mostly sticks out in my mind for the various video games he's been in, most of them quite good. And then of course, he's a major figure in Kingdom Hearts, being the King of Disney Castle and having a Keyblade of his own, and in the second game sometimes shows up to bail you out if you die in certain boss fights. I too find Donald and Goofy are more interesting characters, even in their Kingdom Hearts versions. And one little kind of amusing in-joke is that in some cartoons, there is a character named "Mortimer Mouse", in reference to Mickey's original name. Also, something just came to mind..How about TRON? I don't recall that being mentioned in the old builds, either, and Tron himself is certainly a capable combatant.

Way to get started Jab. That was an excellent Aresian Essay on Disney there at the start.

We've discussed this before, but as you know that I know that you know that I know....when it comes to Disney I'm pretty old school.

I still remember when I was very little how The Disney Channel was my favorite station to watch. They'd have all the classic cartoons and live action movies, The Wonderful World of Color, and stuff like Danger Bay. I cannot tell you how into Danger Bay I was as a kid.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=URQ2g4T8Jd8

Ah that wacky Doc Roberts

Anyway, I loved that stuff. My dad would routinely tape the classic Disney Movies from there and I still have a few. Sadly Sleeping Beauty was taped over by the 1989 Great American Bash....which lends itself to thoughts Maleficent going up against the Road Warriors, Midnight Express, and Dr. Death Steve Williams. That one's going in my dream journal.

Around the ten year mark for the Disney Channel....things started to change. Perhaps it was where I was growing up or perhaps it was the fact that everything got so so so 'hip' 90's on there. I dunno I tuned out about the time they started doing that Alice in Wonderland show with the rapping and such. I still watched the movies released though. My niece and nephew pretty much owned every VHS tape of every Disney movie, and of course I had to watch them all with them. Which I liked doing TBH. I still remember coming home from my first few days of high school to my bedroom and finding my then 4 year old niece sitting there watching Beauty and the Beast and me sitting down beside her asking "Okay, so where are we at here?"

Oh and she may lurk on these boards as I've told her about your RPG conversions Jab. She and I were recently even talked about this upcoming set when we were hanging out. I guess Pocahontas really is the jumping point because that's the one we got to talking about disliking. Don't even get us started on all the Hannah Montana B.S.

That said, the Disney thing is being passed on to a new generation. As I may have mentioned before, my nephew died a few years ago. Sometime thereafter my sister and her husband were approached by his sister and her husband with a proposition. See my brother in law and his sister have a younger brother who's currently in prison, as was his gf who gave birth to an unwanted baby boy. Given they were blood, they took the little guy in and both sets have been jointly raising him ever since. And he absolutely loves my niece and I. At Sunday dinner, which my family tries to have every week if we can, the three of us sat down and watched Peter Pan. And I've of course gotten him shouting "Smeeeee!" whenever he plays with his Captain Hook toy.

Okay wrapping it up

Favorite Disney Animated Feature: The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. ....and honestly more for the Ichabod thing. I LOVE that segment. I think that was my dad's work there as we always watched that one every Halloween, jack. And it made me want to read the Legend of Sleepy Hollow, which I again love (really need to read that again sometime). So much so I hated Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow for years, but I got over it. It's okay.

Favorite live action Disney film: Darby O'Gill and the Little People. Maybe it's just where my family's Irish. Maybe it's because Darby reminds me of my long since passed away grandfather. Maybe it was learning years later that "Hey! That was Sean Connery!". Maybe it was Memphis. Maybe it was the Southern summer nights. Maybe it was you. Maybe it was me. But it sure felt RIGHT.

Hmm it seems Disney had a much larger impact on my childhood than I ever imagined, we had Pinocchio, Cinderella, Peter Pan, Lady and The Tramp, Sleeping Beauty, 101 Dalmatians, The Sword in The Stone, The Jungle Book, Robin Hood, Beauty and The Beast, Mary Poppins, Bedknobs and Broomsticks, Pete's Dragon, Popeye, Flight of the Navigator and Honey I shrunk the Kids all on pirated VHS. I must have watched some of them so many times that even as a child I could recognise where the animators had reused the same animation in different movies. I'm really surprised at just how old some of these movies are.

On legit VHS we had The Little Mermaid and Hocus Pocus (my sisters favourites) and The Lion King (which I remember going to see at the cinema with a couple of school friends, given that we were twelve years old boys who chose to go see a 'Disney' movie I can now see how it became one of the company's biggest movies)

The modern movies that I've enjoyed have been The Incredibles (which I own on DVD) and Up. Though I don't own it I do find myself watching The Emperors New Groove when it's shown (or at least having it on in the background) there's just something about it that I like.
Also I thought Tangled was a better movie than Frozen but it couldn't complete with 'that song'
'A shared universe, like any fictional construct, hinges on suspension of disbelief. When continuity is tossed away, it tatters the construct. Undermines it'
