I think this the most fundamental disconnect in supers role-playing today: some people try to achieve the ideal of play being "just like a comic book," but in the modern era, what does that even mean?

I think all supers rpgs are inherently meant for golden, silver, bronze and, to a lesser extent, iron age emulation. You want to emulate modern comics? Just write fanfic instead.
My problem is that regardless of system, regardless of GM, is that I have very rarely had an enjoyable time in rpg combat. Too often it bags down into yep, roll more dice. :(

Yeah, but with a really good descriptive game system like MSHRPG or DCA, it sure is fun to see who can do just what, how much, how fast, how intelligently and to what degree. :D

Complications:
Responsibility (Pain)- Guido's mutation actually causes him a great deal of pain. He uses humour and joviality as a mask for this.
Prejudice (Obvious Superhuman)- With his extra-large upper body, Guido is clearly a mutant or otherwise superhuman, and will get some odd stares. Similarly, disguises would prove difficult to use.
Responsibility (Bromance with Jamie Madrox)
Disabled (Nearsighted)- Guido can't see very well without his trademark tiny bottlecap glasses.
Weakness (Storing Energy)- Guido cannot store the Kinetic Energy he's afflicted with for very long- doing so will distort his body further (this effect is permanent). Similarly, over-doing it on his Toughness or Absorption attempts (ie. Using Extra Effort) run the tremendous risk of giving Guido a heart attack, which can prove fatal. He nearly died after punching World War Hulk with his own strength.

Total: Abilities: 74 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 17 / Powers: 34 / Defenses: 8 (153)

-Strong Guy... I always hated this one as a kid. Being from the "I took all the characters no one else wanted" X-Factor by Peter David, I didn't really "get" the point of a deliberately stupid name, his jokey attitude, and his ridiculous appearance- I just saw a dumb-looking guy with a dumb name and hated him instantly. Showing up with a huge, muscular torso and itty-bitty legs, he was a goofy-ass design and I straight up DESPISED him as a kid. The fact that he KO'd my then-favourite Warpath in The X-Cutioner's Song (which I just realized is based off of a book by a famous author) didn't help matters. Now that I'm older, I find him a bit funny (joking that Havok was talking to him when he said "are you alright, Darling?" to Polaris, etc.- "I'm fine, honeybunch, but you might want to check on Lorna"), but that old childhood annoyance pops up every now and again, so I don't think I'll ever really get into this character.

-Guido Carosella debuted in 1985 as the bodyguard for ultra-'80s singer Lila Cheney. He was a supremely minor character, showing up only here and there as a supporting character to OTHER supporting characters- the most unique thing about him were his mutant powers- the strange ability to take any damage thrown at him, absorb it, and redirect it in the form of physical impact. Among the only "important" things he did was get a beating from Rogue as part of the "Muir Island X-Men" who'd been mentally controlled by the Shadow King. It was quite the shocker when he was introduced to Peter David's "Isle of Misfit Toys" known as X-Factor- the rebooted book now featured a hodgepodge of mutants nobody else wanted- Havok, Quicksilver, Polaris, Wolfsbane, the Multiple Man... and Guido. Guido, cracking wise about how every team in their era had a "Strong Guy" (which was true; back in the olden times, hero groups tended to vary a bit- in the '90s, it seemed like every single super-team popped up with one big guy in the back, whose only power was being strong. Image Comics furthered this archetype to the extreme), came up with the world's plainest codename as a result.

-He goes along with X-Factor on their numerous adventures (including the X-Cutioner's Song story that features two X-teams ganging up on X-Force, where Strong Guy easily defeats Warpath by absorbing his punches and then one-shotting him). In the famous "X-Factor sees Doc Samson" issue of their book, Guido reveals a pretty horrifying backstory- the bus accident that revealed his mutant powers and left him deformed also puts him in constant agony- his outgoing persona is a public face to hide his pain, as to reveal it to others would make them feel sorry for him- something he refuses to let happen. Further developments in the book cause him to fall into a deep depression. He ends his time in the book (following the death of Jamie Madrox to the Legacy Virus) by suffering a near-fatal heart attack due to absorbing the impact of a bomb- this puts him on the shelf (almost literally- he's placed in suspended animation) for several years.

-Guido would return when Jamie Madrox returned from the dead. This "happy ending" stuck him in Mutant Limbo for a while until David returned to the X-Books with X-Factor Investigations, featuring Guido in the same "Funny Guy" routine. He goes through some angst after killing a man while on a mission, and then suffers a fatal heart attack while saving lives- his immediate resurrection reveals teammate Layla Miller's mutant power to resurrect people, but at the cost of their soul. A soulless Guido thus becomes more aggressive, fails in his attempts to woo another teammate (Monet St. Croix), and is eventually seen working for MEPHISTO against several other Hell Lords. He ends up murdering Wolfsbane's son to become the Supreme Hell Lord (??), but a later Thunderbolts story seems to undo this, as Red Hulk convinces him to turn his back and attempt to regain his lost soul.

-Strong Guy is a PL 9.5 Brawler most of the time, but goes up to PL 10.5 when he's Absorbing others' attacks to use to amplify his own damage. In the end, he's a very powerful, strong character, whose full strength (when absorbing Kinetic energy, ie. punches) is just a notch higher than the other guys in his weight class (Thing, Warpath, Colossus), but he's similarly easier to hit. His Absorption, despite being his main power, is a little weak and low-level, but when you think about it, he is REALLY tough & strong to begin with, so he obviously doesn't need a great deal of it before he'd go way over his realistic level. His Impervious Toughness (a REALLY hefty 8 ranks of damage is insta-blocked overall) is Sustained so he can Stunt it if he needs to (note: not always a good idea- check his Complications, which are now a MUCH simpler and more elegant way of doing things than the old Flaws/Drawbacks system for powers like his). He also has a few Advantages linked to his powers (so they'd go away if his powers were blocked).

There's some undeniable truth to this, and the GM and players getting into things certainly matters a lot, but I think most of it comes down to players wanting a "game" with their role-playing.

I wanted to run a "modern" campaign recently, but my players largely wanted to play "stop the villain of the week." That didn't work.

-Spirit is a Luphomoid whose planet was devoured by Galactus- one of the few survivors, she allies with her sisters, but seeks her own death in battle against a worthy adversary. She worshipped an Avatar of Death that resembled Death Metal (of Marvel UK fame), and so she tried to get killed by him in a fight. However, she survived and they made a truce- several years later, she reappeared as one of Gamora's Graces in an issue of Annihilation- though this wasn't much of an appearance, as the Graces were pretty much a Gruenwaldian attempt at going "Hey, here's some people in the background who were once in other books!"- Cerise, Nebula & Tana Nile were hardly given DIALOGUE, much less impressive showings. It is likely Spirit died fighting the Annihilation Wave.

-Spirit is absolutely cut from the cloth of other 1990s characters- Super-Strength AND Martial Arts AND Weapons. That is the complete trifecta. A one-off character, she gets PL 8 and likes it.

As much as we lampoon 90's Marvel for their 'Throw anything at the wall and see what sticks' mentality, I personally prefer that creativity despite the failures over what we have now, titles crammed full of unoriginal less interesting race/sex swapped teen copies.

I'm primarily a Marvel fan so I don't know whether current books by the the 'Distinguished Competition' are in a similar state.

Complications:
Motivation (Greed)- Angela sells organs on the black market.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 11 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 9 (94)

-The Surgeon General is one of the most insane characters created in the early '90s- a woman who trolls bars & dance clubs to find victims, who she then butchers and harvests to sell their organs on the black market. In a world where China does that to Falun Gong practicioners, I find that a questionable business strategy. And plus, you could just go to some poor country to find vulnerable people and weaker police forces- she targets NEW YORK CITY for this stuff? Never mind that she's obviously got the medical expertise to run her own lucrative practice. It's bizarre. In any case, Angela Kutter (... really?) was doing this for a bit, but got captured by Spider-Man & Daredevil after accidentally cutting herself with her own blade- DD saved her life, then took her to jail, unraveling her black market operation.

-A ludicrous, one-off villain like this only deserves PL 7 status, though that Bone Saw can do some nasty damage. A Scalpel is just like a Knife, but has Precise, owing to its finer blade. Also she can throw them (I question how effective a teeny blade like that would be as a throwing weapon, but it'd at least hurt like a bitch). Also she can use knock-out gas (which nearly got DD killed one time) and a needle full of God knows what. Thanks to scc who did a build of her on the old forum, which I had to give her.

Hahaha holy freaking God- Scott Keith's review of an old WCW event has me in tears while in public today: http://blogofdoom.com/index.php/2016/12 ... -06-12-91/

The stuff with the old lady is amazing. I have have watch this now:

Dustin Rhodes v. Terrence Taylor

Dustin quickly gets a corner clothesline for two and follows with a pair of atomic drops, but he misses a blind charge and flies to the floor. And because it’s Tennessee, there’s an old lady in the front row who is PISSED about it. Taylor suplexes him back in for two, and a gutwrench powerbomb gets two. That old lady is INTO IT, yelling with every move and cheering for Rhodes. Good for her! Dustin makes the comeback as Taylor bumps higher with every elbow because his job probably depended on it, and Dustin gets the bulldog while Mr. Hughes distracts the ref. Dustin goes after him, but new York Foundation member Richard Morton comes in for the DQ at 4:30 and the York Foundation beatdown is on. Short but energetic. **

Sting v. Nikita Koloff

Sting charges in on fire, but Koloff just destroys him with a clothesline to cut him off, and he goes to work. That old lady is waving a MOTHERFUCKING AMERICAN FLAG at ringside because she bought her ticket and will not tolerate bullshit from damn commies. I wish we had arenas full of her these days.
Koloff cuts off a Sting comeback and hits a tombstone for two. Sting fights back with a sunset flip, but Koloff punches him in the face to block, and then Sting finishes the move anyway and gets two. Koloff pounds away in the corner and follows with a backbreaker for two, and then he MAKES MY DAY by going over to yell at that old lady. This man is a PRO. Koloff pounds the ribs and chokes away on the ropes, and sadly it wasn’t opposite the old lady so that Sting could personally appeal to her for help. Because she probably would have jumped the rail and shoved that flag down Koloff’s throat if given a chance. That used to be Ricky Morton’s #1 trick: Find some super-mark in the front row and sell directly to her. Koloff drops an elbow on the ribs and tosses Sting to the floor, but Sting whips him into the railing to buy some time. Back in, Koloff tries another piledriver, but Sting reverses to his own and makes the comeback, but misses the Stinger splash and the old lady is yelling at Sting to move while Koloff sets up for the Sickle. And indeed he does move, and Koloff misses, allowing Sting to roll him up for the pin at 9:30. This was GREAT. Any match that has an old lady losing her shit at ringside is OK with me. ***3/4

I recall this being my thoughts on Rob Liefeld's influence on the New Mutants comic. I mean, as awful as he was, it was still MUCH BETTER than the previous Simonson/Blevins run, because while both runs were horrible, Simonson/Blevins was also INCREDIBLY BORING. Just issue after issue of boring crap that either went nowhere, or went somewhere GOD-AWFUL (Bird-Brain). While Liefeld sucked, he was at least an INTERESTING kind of suck. While Simonson was forced to write all of his Sketchpad characters through stupid military-style adventures, things were actually happening, the plot was moving forward, and we were seeing new things. Liefeld's stuff is fun to hate-read... Louise Simonson's stuff was always garbage.

Complications:
Reputation (Giant Idiot)- Nobody thinks much of Sluggo's intelligence, especially his old pal Deadpool.
Motivation (Greed)- Sluggo is usually seen chasing after Tolliver's Will, looking for a big payout.

Total: Abilities: 46 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 7 / Defenses: 11 (86)

-Sluggo is SUCH a minor part of X-Force that he pretty much jobbed in his first major appearance! He's an old Mercenary partner of Deadpool's who also gets involved in the hunt for Tolliver's will, bringing him on the hunt for his old agent, Copycat. He first appears firing a laser blast into Copycat's best friend Tina Valentino (by sheer luck- she was identical to Copycat at the time). Deadpool threatens him for it, but soon they're partnering up and chasing after Copycat, until Domino arrives, firing a MASSIVE laser cannon through both mercs, then putting a few more rounds into them to buy time for a getaway. He doesn't do much else, and only reappears MUCH later in Deadpool's own book. He is accidentally shot in the head by Deadpool's prisoner/pal Weasel, rendering Sluggo a joke in addition to a background nobody.

-A big, strong-looking guy (he was HUGE), Sluggo is durable enough to be not overly-bothered by a massive Cannon Blast from Domino and some head-shots from a gun, meaning he's got some Regeneration on him.

Total: Abilities: 20 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 0 / Powers: 60 / Defenses: 10 (99)

-The Schizoid Man was mentally unstable, but could create solid constructs with his mind. Spider-Man, then devolving into a lizard (god I know I've been reading comics for a long time when I read that without questioning it in the slightest- I was like "ah, probably a Lizard plot), assaulted Chip and set his therapy back for a long time. He was largely forgotten in comics, showing up only in the background of a "Vil-Anon" group devoted to curing super-villains of their criminal tendencies.

-The Schizoid Man can't hold up well on his own... but the trick to fighting him is getting past a series of Constructs, then dealing with his Thrown Weapons- in short, the hero has got some legwork to do if he's gonna actually close with the guy.

The Blatino Spider-Man:
-Another in the long line of "Minority Hires" in recent years, Miles has the distinct advantage of being created to be the new Ultimate Spider-Man, replacing the deceased Peter Parker (who heroically died fighting) in his book. Also, he was created by Marvel's golden boy, Brian Michael Bendis. Of course, that's the kind of thing that also holds a hero BACK, as fan backlash can be tremendous (just ask Kyle Rayner). Equally-so, tooth-gnashing from the "Anti-PC Crowd" can be just as vicious, but Marvel was game to try. And really, they tried HARD- not only was he now the central figure to the "Ultimate" line, but he got appearances in the cartoon, cross-overs with the mainstream Marvel U, etc. And it seems to have worked out- the dude got teleported wholesale to the actual Marvel Universe when the Ultimate line folded.

-Naturally, he's a Minority Hire- meant to increase the number (and prominence) of minorities in the comic book world, which have struggled for a lot of reasons (perhaps the largest is that they were all created after the 1960s, which means they're not "classic" characters, and thus tend to get dumped for whatever writer's OTHER favorite minority character, meaning that few ever get consistent pushes for years). Plus, as Marvel's top top names (Joe Quesada & Alex Alonso) are of Latino descent, the appeal of a guy named "Morales" being Spider-Man is obvious. He's also something I like- he's multiracial! Black AND Latino, not only covering two bases, but showing that- *gasp*- sometimes people breed with someone of another race... who ISN'T WHITE. This has long been something I've found odd- you see a lot of "mixed" couples, but it's usually "Not Too Black" situations where the non-"ethnic" one is white (Japan does the same thing- a HUGE number of "ethnic" (in this case, non-Asian looking) characters are actually Half-Japanese. A lot of characters in my OC-verse were meant to be bi-racial with mixes you don't usually see (Blasian, Blatino, Bliddle Eastern... actually I keep just mixing black with other things now that I think of it. BIRACIAL PEOPLE ARE HOT, DAMMIT!) for the same reason.

-So we get the eternal question: Does Representation count? Well, the majority of people in the U.S. remains Caucasian, but to MINORITIES, it definitely seems to. So it ain't just white-guilt sufferers on their blogs crying about it. And really, it's the Ultimate Spider-Man. It ain't like they killed off the regular guy and tried it.

Anyways...:
-Miles Morales is a Peter Parker-like smart kid with an uncle who excercized bad judgment and was a career crook. He ends up being bitten by a second genetically-engineered spider, and loses his own uncle, in one of those coincidences that KIIIIIIIIIIIIND of stretches things, but why not? He first decides NOT to become a super-hero, judging the dangers of the lifestyle, but is guilt-ridden by the public death of Peter Parker, realizing he could have helped. He decides to become the new Spider-Man, putting on a BITCHING "reverse color" version of the Spider-Man outfit (EVERY INCARNATION OF THAT OUTFIT LOOKS AWESOME. I've said it before, and I'll say it a thousand times- there has never been an outfit that looks THAT GOOD in every incarnation... except the silver metal one. And Ben Reilly's blue sweatshirt look).

-Miles undergoes a lot of "Everyman" stuff, and has the bouts of bad luck that plague the Parkers of both universes, including having about a thousand people figure out his Secret ID, and getting negative reactions for wearing the uniform of a dead hero- it takes some pep-talks from Peter's loved ones (Aunt May, MJ, etc.) to really convince him of what he's doing. Apparently Peter Parker returns to life somehow, and Miles gets a rebooted book (written by someone other than Bendis, who'd been writing Ultimate Spider-Man for one of comics' longest uninterrupted runs). However, it was in 2015 (only four years after his debut) that the Ultimate Universe was finally merged with the Marvel one (which had adopted a few Ultimateverse things anyways, though thankfully stepped back from some of them, like their increasingly-hostile version of Captain America). Miles became central to this whole thing, as he was declared one of the few things "worth keeping" (too much of The Ultimates had been ruined with time).

-As a result, the Secret Wars storyline ends with "God Doom" defeated by Earth's superheroes, and the Ultimate universe being evaporated along with everything but the "Mainstream" one. Miles fears the loss of everyone he'd ever loved... except his entire personal world was saved, because he gave the Molecule Man a hamburger (which is possibly the best part of the entire thing- Miles going all "Oh no my world is dead" and then we get that shot of Owen Reese looking at him in gratitude and going "... I OWE you one").

-Miles joins the new Avengers squad (alas, it was my least-favorite of the three Avengers books, which is odd, as Mark Waid has the best pedigree of the three writers) and gets his all-new Mainstream Marvel solo book, in which he acts as the "Spider-Man of New York" while Peter Parker does Spidey stuff around the world. This creates an uncomfortable situation for me, as this is YET ANOTHER example of the "Dilution of Supers" in the Marvel Universe- the Hulk has already been diluted to barely-green "nothing" by this point thanks to all the different Hulks out there, but now SPIDER-MAN gets stuck to this? Bad enough there's four Spider-Women (though the fourth one really doesn't count), but now two Spider-MEN? At the same time. That's some DC shit, yo- but even they manage to pull it off a little better than Marvel's been doing lately (Six Caps! Eight-thousand Hulks!). In any case, a thousand more people discovered Miles's secret identity, he quit the Avengers and joined the all-teenage Champions, and here we are. I've read only a handful of comics featuring him, and he seems... pretty much like Ultimate Spidey- the Everydude Super-Hero who cracks jokes and acts like a real human being. But I like him- it's good to see the occasional hero who FREAKS OUT when he sees something freaky. I get that impression of him.

The Powers of Miles:
-Miles is pretty much like a 1970s-era Spider-Man- skilled and with great powers, but not as elite as Peter Parker is as of today. His Spider-Sense is a little weaker than Peter's, but he gains Camouflage (even while wearing clothes), and a "Venom Sting" that works as an Unreliable Blast or a Paralyzing Touch attack, giving him a different set of options than Peter (which I kinda like- it separates them a bit, rather than making Miles a mere clone). Otherwise, he's PL 8-9 in range, as he's less-experienced than Peter is by a WIDE margin.

Oh yeah, I just remembered one more obscure "S" Marvel character - Smokescreen. They're from an anti-smoking PSA, of all things. (And it got remade!)

I wasn't sure if they were actually in continuity, but the Appendix says they are? I dunno if that's enough info to stat him, but basically his power is to generate smoke to asphyxiate/blind people.
