All will decrease by 2 every successive round the same move is done.

-Bandeiras rounds out the new "Brazil Team" in King of Fighters IV, and is a big-time fan of ninjas- so much so that he founded a "Brazilian Ninja Arts" dojo. Unfortunately, he's in desperate need to students, and joins the King of Fighters tournament to advertise it. This makes him a bit of a comedic character, especially with the quirks that he's just a big ol' fanboy of Japanese culture, and is actually a lot more clueless about Japan than he thinks- he presumes Japan to be a low-tech, traditional paradise and is shocked by the modern country he sees.

oh god that was SO much work, lol. Rolling all those dice for all those characters took forever. Also, I misread the Dodge rules so everyone was way harder to hit than they should have been (just in case anyone was curious why nobody could hit much of anything during that tournament).

The NESTS Saga

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

LOL "Bad-Ass Sword Guy" never once got used in-game.

THE NESTS SAGA:
-King of Fighters '99 through to KoF 2002 were all centered around the NESTS Cartel, about an evil organization of criminals using high technology to try and rule the world. A stark contrast to the mystical "Orochi Saga" that preceded it, it followed a similar path- three canonical games, then a "Best Of" Dream Match (the 2002 game).

Unfortunately, I found the idea of NESTS rather boring- they just want to Take Over The World all their stuff is based around cloning so you see a LOT of repeated characters flying around. THREE white-haired pretty boys among the villains, and a white-haired hero as well. And the fact that almost every one of the new characters of this series of three canon games had some link to NESTS made them a bit too interrelated for my tastes, especially as once the Saga ended, so did the reason for most of those characters sticking around. It results in a lot of "And then they were asked by Heidern to investigate NESTS", too, as endless characters get tied into watching the organization.

The purpose of NESTS is to clone bodies (usually Kyo Kusanagi, since his family has inborn flame powers) and collect the battle data from fighters, then killing them and getting a race of Martial Arts Supermen to take over the planet. Okay, that part's kind of awesome. They used a series of space stations as their bases, and ended up antagonizing most of the major characters.

NESTS Cartel Members:
Nests- The President of the organization, it was his plan to do everything, but his subordinate his son Igniz killed him and took over. He was never playable, and probably couldn't fight.
Igniz- Killed his own father to become the new president of NESTS. The Final Boss of KoF 2001. His death on the satellite ends the NESTS Saga and the organization.
Zero (Original)- Igniz's subordinate. Disgusted by his own clone's betrayal. The Sub-Boss of Igniz in 2001. Probably died when the satellite was destroyed.
Zero (Clone)- A clone of Zero, sporting a mustache. The only Boss not to have white hair. Betrayed the organization and created his "Zero Cannon" to control world governments. Ultimately undone by the "Hero Team", then executed by Whip, who was furious over her kidnapping and brainwashing by the organization, by gunshot. The Final Boss of KoF 2000.
Krizalid- A clone of K', fought and lost to him. Executed by the Clone Zero for failing to carry out his mission, but was resurrected by the original Zero, dying once more in 2001. The Final Boss of KoF '99.
K9999- The 9999th clone of Kyo Kusanagi, and a total rip-off of Tetsuo from Akira. Exiled from continuity after going on the run.
Angel- A killer sent to watch over K9999 and kill Kula Diamond. When they failed, they went on the run.
Foxy- A loyal agent who grew close to Kula Diamond as a daughter-figure, and defended her against K9999 & Angel. Possibly died as a result, or could be trying to rebuild NESTS as a more benevolent organization.
Candy Diamond- An android charged with watching over Kula (she's her Striker as the Sub-Boss of KoF 2000)- died protecting her after she destroyed the Zero Cannon.
Diana- An ally of Foxy & Candy's, defecting with them, she was meant to be in the games but was dropped. Lived on following the fall of NESTS.
Kyo-1 & Kyo-2- Clones of Kyo created to fight martial artists. Both were probably destroyed by the Ikari Warriors.
Nameless- A literal canon replacement for K9999- he's a loyal agent, if only to protect the genetic material of the woman he loves, hoping she'll be brought back.
Isolde- A kindly nurse who empowers Nameless when they're close- she died being experimented upon by NESTS, and her genetic material was used to create Nameless's glove.
Ron- Lin's good friend, who quit the Flying Bigands to join NESTS, acting as a Striker for Zero. Lin now hunts him as a result, but he instead left following the death of Igniz, and now follows around Sie Kensou for having the "Dragon Spirit". He seems like he was supposed to be a major character or a Sub-Boss, but nothing much came of it. Revealed to be the father of Duo Lon & Xiao Lon in later games.
Misty- The secretary of Nests, but secretly the lover of Igniz, and enabled his coup. Quit after the fall of NESTS to join Ron.

People Fighting NESTS:
* The list of characters who oppose NESTS is rather huge (Kyo and his friends, plus the Ikari Warriors, specifically target them), but these are the new characters created during the "NESTS Saga" to oppose them.

K'- An aloof, violent guy created from cloning cells of Kyo Kusanagi and placing them onto a brainwashed kid. Betrayed NESTS upon discovering they cloned him to create the superior Krizalid, becoming their worst enemy.
Maxima- His friend was killed investigating NESTS, and so he joined them as a cybernetic double agent and ally of K'.
Whip- Actually the sister of K', also brainwashed by NESTS, but freed and joined the Ikari Warriors.
Kula Diamond- A female clone of K', meant to fight him. Was set up to be murdered by her teammates K9999 & Angel, but escaped and joined her "brother's" team.
Lin- An assassin who joined the hunt for NESTS after his friend Ron betrayed his group to NESTS.
Ling- The leader of a group of mercenaries, including Seth & Vanessa. Killed by Zero (Clone) and replaced with another clone, which was killed by Heidern.
Seth- Special operative hunting NESTS.
Vanessa- Mercenary operative hired to investigate NESTS.
Ramon- Latino guy convinced by Vanessa to investigate NESTS.
Sylvie Paula Paula- Created much later (in KoF XIV), with her backstory being that she was a former agent traumatized while a member.

Relationship (Whip, Kula Diamond)- Whip is K's birth sister, and Kula is a clone of his- he is close to both.
Responsibility (Antisocial)- K' is a bit grim, aloof, uncooperative socially, and intense. Maxima does most of his talking for him, and he doesn't like to put much effort into anything- he's known for being lazy and rude.
Weakness (Predictability)- SNK Characters cannot simply "spam" out the same attack over and over again, as the opponent will expect the attacks, and be ready for them (and a counterattack). The third time they try the same technique (or same combo of techniques) in a short span, they will be at -2 to Accuracy, AND to his Active Defenses in that round. All will decrease by 2 every successive round the same move is done.

Total: Abilities: 60 / Skills: 50--25 / Advantages: 20 + 11 / Powers: 9 / Defenses: 20 (145)

K'- Our New Main Character:
-In a pretty big surprise move, the end of the "Orochi Saga" brought on a NEW Main Character- K' replacing Kyo Kusanagi as the lead guy in the "Hero Team", and the one who wins all the tournaments and defeats the Final Bosses in canon. The apostrophe in his name is one of those quirks about Japanese translations of English things, and I've seen it before, but sometimes pronounced differently. Here, the name is pronounced "Kay-dash"- there's a Japanese women's promotion called JD' that is pronounced "J.D. Star".

-K' is so much a clone of Kyo Kusanagi (ie. they share a ton of moves) that he is almost literally just that. A guy with the actual DNA of Kyo Kusanagi! The NESTS Cartel being interested in creating the ultimate fighting machines, they clone Kyo relentlessly, making an army of guys who can wield his ancestral "Kusanagi Flames"- the white-haired K' ends up becoming one of the best of these. When he discovers that NESTS also cloned HIM, creating the superior Krizalid, he is disgusted, and abandons NESTS alongside his partner Maxima. In this sense, K' is a very dark character- aloof and incapable of much social interaction, he requires Maxima to handle most of the socializing. A reluctant hero and fugitive from justice, he's perhaps emblematic of the type of male character who came to dominate things targeted at young boys- instead of the friendly fight-lovers like Goku, Shonen protagonists started turing into the same grim, outlaw archetypes you saw in American comics in the '90s.

-K' was, well, VASTLY important to the "NESTS Saga", having the whole thing revolving around him like the "Orochi Saga" did around Kyo (who got a rival, partners, clones, a fanboy, a father, and more)- K' ends up fighting his sisters Whip & Kula, deals with his clone, and more. His visual look was BAD-ASS, though- SNK always specialized in "Guys in fashionable clothes" fighting, but K' had this whole leather gear thing, contrasting well with his ultra-white hair. His hairstyle was redesigned when someone realized that Rock Howard had the same look in Garou: Mark of the Wolves, but we had our new main guy. K' actually went over really well, despite being a Kyo-Clone- he's one of the most popular characters in the series. Despite that, he doesn't make it into any of the Capcom vs. SNK games.

The Story of K':
-K' was a normal child living with his sister, Seirah, but they were kidnapped by NESTS and experimented upon- his DNA was mixed with that of Kyo Kusanagi's, giving him Kyo's fire powers, and his memories were altered. He was forced into the King of Fighters tournament, teaming with Maxima (a secret agent within NESTS) and Kyo's friends Benimaru & Shingo as the new "Hero Team". They confront Krizalid at the end of the 1999 KoF tournament, ultimately defeating him- Krizalid was merely a pawn of NESTS, and a clone of K' himself. Krizalid dies and the heroes go on the run from Heidern's Ikari Warriors and other agents of justice.

-The next year, K' & Maxima team up with Vanessa & Ramon in a new incarnation of the "Hero Team", but the two revealed at the end their intentions to capture the duo under orders from Heidern. They confront Zero at the end of the tournament, and he dies- Kula Diamond, herself another K' clone, saves the world from his Zero Cannon. Along the way, he discovers that Whip of the Ikari Warriors is his sister, Seirah! K' and his friends continue fighting, defeating the Original Zero and Igniz, who rules NESTS, alongside new character Lin, in KoF 2001, which ends the "NESTS Saga". The next game is a "Dream Match" out of continuity.

-The "Ash Crimson Saga" continues the next arc of KoF, with K' himself now more of a side character who appears in the background. He doesn't appear in KoF XIII for some reason (his sprite was animated for its predecessor!), saying he wasn't interested in the fight- in most of these games, he and Maxima were sent by Heidern or Chin Gentsai to investigate the bad guys.

The Power of K':
-K' uses a fighting style similar to Bruce Lee's, but with some of Kyo's Specials thrown in- he's a combo-based fighter like Kyo turned into, but keeps the anti-air and other things. He uses violent elbow strikes, loud cries, and more- coming off like an unhinged, brutal ass-kicker. Typically in most games he is one of the top-tier fighters.

-Maxima is definitely one of the most unique characters in the King of Fighters series, though I was never quite taken with his design- it looks like he's just a guy in a jumpsuit with some armor attached to the shoulders. Despite that, he's a major member of the new "Hero Team" debuting in KoF '99, acting as the best friend of the moody, bad-ass K'. He's meant to add a touch of maturity to K's usual teenage impetuousness- he's a Canadian soldier out to avenge the death of his friend Rocky- slain by NESTS. As a disguise, he had himself cybernetically altered, then infiltrated NESTS, breaking free with K'.

-Maxima and K' were designed by the designer of The Fallen Angels, an arcade game, and look like two of his previous characters from that. They were meant to be a big deal, but it was mostly K' that got the attention- Maxima showed up with him in most of the later games, but missed the first one under the new sprite-graphics style (KoF XII), likely due to their incredibly-shortened roster. He reappeared for the next one, and showed up in the latest game as well.

-Maxima is a super-strong cyborg, so I put him in the upper tiers of strength, and threw in all those big wind-up punches that make up a large part of his offense. It's a Big Punch, Diagonal Punch (anti-air), a bunch of Grab moves (all stat up pretty much the same way), and then a Super that's a chest laser- Alt-Effected because it's unique to his moves. Some of his moves also have a lot of "Autoguard" properties that make it hard to counterattack him, so I threw in Defensive Attack. The Cybernetic parts of him make him one of the few characters to cost more than 150 points.

The Fallen Angels is a rather odd, obscure anomaly in terms of Fighting Games. It's nice-looking and plays quite well, but the game appears to be quite literally unfinished, despite (seemingly) being released, with graphical glitches and several characters being cut yet their sprites existing int he data files.

https://youtu.be/LlbLYhYOCKo Here's a playthrough of the game.

Relationship (K')- Whip & K' are believed to be siblings before NESTS captured them.
Weakness (Desert Eagle)- Though Whip carries a gun, using it in physical fights reduces her defenses by -2 each. Inexplicable, but that's because all the "Chi Users" get the same flaw.
-Four-man teams being introduced in King of Fighters '99 saw many groups add a fourth member- curiously, Heidern wasn't slotted onto the "Ikari Warriors Team"- WHIP was. A girl in a full-body military-style uniform (a bit drab; I've never liked her look), she carried a strange blue whip that looked like monofilament or something. Her debut was intended to be around when Leona came about, but Leona's introduction pushed her back. Later games would elaborate upon her backstory- she is either the younger sister of K' or a clone of her, as both were kidnapped and experimented upon by the NESTS cartel. Furious at Zero for the manipulation, she executes him in the ending of KoF 2000.

-Whip seemed quite popular at first, effectively replacing Heidern for the most part (the K'/Maxima/Whip/Lin team won KoF 2001 as well), but the newer graphics of KoF XII left her out, as they had to shorten up the roster, and so she misses two games in a row before being added as DLC in the most recent game.

-Whip is unusual in that she both uses a melee weapon in a game typically devoted to unarmed fighters, and she uses a freaking GUN as one of her Special Moves! This almost NEVER happens, and really makes her stand out. She thus has a rare combination of Device, Special Moves AND a weird drawback that gives her the same flaws with her ranged attacks that everyone else has. This gunshot attack is censored in many later games, owing to how America treats gunfire in the media- in some games, her whip itself transforms into one, while in another, she has special beads that let out a blast.

Maxima also seems to be a reference to one of the two playable characters, also named Maxima (the other named Rocky) from the obscure SNK beat em up, Robo Army.

All will decrease by 2 every successive round the same move is done.

Total: Abilities: 58 / Skills: 36--18 / Advantages: 9 + 11 / Powers: 9 / Defenses: 14 (119)

-Probably one of the most all-out sexy characters in video game history, Angel is one of the "NESTS Team" in King of Fighters 2001, though generally acts more like a goof-off wrestling fan than a career criminal. Sporting a cleavage-baring black leather jacket, tiny bikini bottoms and ASSLESS CHAPS, she covers more skin than plenty of female characters, but somehow comes off looking like the ultimate "Miss Fanservice" ever all the same. It's said she was based entirely on her designer's "personal preferences", which is a bit funny, because said designer is GAY. It's not for nothing that she was the 2nd most popular character in a 2005 fan poll, a couple years after she stopped showing up. See, Angel, like a couple of other characters, seemingly had some rights issues, and so she only appeared in two games before being dumped- it was actually a fifteen-year wait until she showed up in KoF XIV!

-Angel is a NESTS agent, meant to keep an eye on K9999, a powerful cloning experiment- both are sent after traitorous past experiments, but they swerve us right at the end of KoF 2001 Story Mode by saying they were actually there to kill Kula Diamond, their own partner! They devastate her guardian, Foxy, but disappear in the aftermath of the tournament, failing to kill Kula- they're said to be on the run from NESTS loyalists- she joins Ramon's team in the fourteenth tournament, tired of living in the shadows.

-Angel is one of the more on-the-nose examples of a "Pro Wrestling Fighter" character- while most are either based off of specific people (Muscle Power from World Heroes is Hulk Hogan, Raiden from Fatal Fury is Vader), few take the copying of famous moves to quite THIS extent- despite being a slender female character, she uses the infamous People's Elbow by world-famous wrestler, Duane "The Rock" Johnson!

-Angel's big mechanic as far as Special Moves go is her "Unchained Circle", shared with Gai Tendo and a few others- a combo of alternating moves that you can enter at your leisure, throwing your opponent off.

The third time they try the same technique (or same combo of techniques) in a short span, they will be at -2 to Accuracy, AND to his Active Defenses in that round. -... REALLY? ... REALLY?!?

-Okay, so K9999 (of course pronounced "Kay-Four-Nine") is the most bald-faced ripoff in the history of gaming. In a genre more prone to copycats than any other (HOW many Capcom & SNK characters are directly ripped off from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure again? Never mind Fighters History), K9999 stands out as the worst. The guy looks almost EXACTLY like Tetsuo from the ultra-famous Akira, to the point of copying his hairstyle, mannerisms, VOICE ACTOR, and even the "veiny-arm" sequence. In KoF 2002, he has a special intro against KUSANAGI, whose VA played Kaneda in Akira, as well. I mean, at least they were honest about it. But holy Jesus, no wonder they excommunicated him from the series.

-So K9999 is the 9999th clone of K', made when NESTS perfected the cloning following the death of Krizalid in King of Fighters '99. His shapeshifting powers are unimaginable, and so are controlled with his blue glove. He's out to kill K', along with his partners Angel, Foxy and Kula Diamond as the "NESTS Cartel Team". It's implied at the end of the story that he and Angel killed Foxy when they turned on Kula, but everyone but Kula was promptly written out after the next game- a "Dream Match" non-canon game, so he has only a single canonical appearance.

-SNK has confessed disfavor with the character because of just HOW obvious the homage was with K9999- the similar character "Nameless" was created in his stead.

-K9999 is extremely powerful in the canon, so he's PL 9 despite being a one-off character- he has some short-range energy effects (two Fire-based shots and an invisible, dust-creating Telekinetic Wave), and all his moves are named after Tetsuo's quotes in Akira.

SNK Fighting Style: Accurate Attack, All-Out Attack, Defensive Roll, Extraordinary Effort, Fast Grab, Improved Defense, Improved Hold, Improved Trip (Throw), Power Attack, Takedown, Withstand Damage (Block)

Powers:
"The Kusanagi Flames" Features 1: Adds Fire to Unarmed Damage [1]

"Yukikaze- Arm Drill" Strength-Damage +0 (Extras: Multiattack 3) (Flaws: Distracting) Linked to Affliction 3 (Toughness; Dazed & Vulnerable/Stunned & Defenseless) (Extras: Extra Condition) (Flaws: Limited Degree) (5) -- [7]

Offense:
Unarmed +15 (+3 Damage, DC 18)
Special Moves +13 (+5 Damage, DC 20)

Initiative +5

Defenses:
Dodge +12 (DC 22), Parry +13 (DC 23), Toughness +3 (+4 D.Roll), Fortitude +6, Will +5

Complications:
Relationship (Isolde)- Nameless fell in love with a kind girl while recovering from injuries caused by his testing. Their powers offset each other and allowed him greater control- when she died during testing, NESTS had her DNA put into a glove that controls Nameless's powers. He now does everything NESTS tells him to do, hoping that he can reunite Isolde with her body.

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 7 + 11 / Powers: 8 / Defenses: 17 (114)

-So APPARENTLY someone at SNK was overly-embarassed by the existence of K9999 the Tetsuo knock-off, so when the remake of King of Fighters 2002 game out, entitled Unlimited Match, they exiled the character completely, replacing him with a suspiciously-similar substitute named Nameless. And he's a LITERAL substitute. Like, they just took K9999 out of continuity and said "okay, it was Nameless instead". Most of his "brothers" have died from massive burns, or just exploded, but Nameless survived, despite constant risks. He was a loyal assassin for NESTS, but when he spared a victim, the man told him that a girl that he'd loved was actually another NESTS experiment, and their powers were boosting each other- she died during testing, and her DNA was grafted onto the glove that controlled Nameless's powers. Realizing the man might be correct, Nameless feels he cannot risk the girl's life, and so he does whatever NESTS tells him to, in order to restore her to her rightful body.

-Nameless has most of the same stats as K9999, but uses some different moves- a Multiattack "Drill" move, and two fire shots (the same as K9999).
