Cross-Posting: Kaulu's "Leverage" Builds
Posted: Wed Aug 01, 2018 6:16 pm
by CaptainKaulu
I compulsively make M&M 3e characters. And spend a lot of time formatting my character sheets to look really nice. My main repository is
over at Ronin Army, but I thought I'd post some of the builds I like best here and see if they can get some more comments or at least appreciative views.
I like the old TV show
Leverage. And I find that M&M is remarkably good for portraying its characters. So in this thread, I'm going to showcase the
Leverage characters I've built. This will be a relatively short thread, as I don't have plans to do any more than the main six characters.
For the sake of getting the show accurately portrayed, I didn't worry about keeping these builds within a points budget or making them equal to each other. They still all came out quite close together except for Eliot, the combat powerhouse of the team, who has about 30 more points than the others. Oh well. Oh, and I guess Nate, the leader, is somewhere between Eliot and the others.
Feedback appreciated.

A former insurance investigator for I.Y.S., now the leader of Leverage Consulting & Associates. One of "the good guys," but that doesn't always mean he's a nice person.
NOTES
While going over this build, I noticed how overpowered the "Communication-Dependent" flaw is. Adding "Affects Others" and "Communication-Dependent" to a power is a net zero effect on its Power Points, while still allowing it to (sometimes) be shared with your party. Oh well.

COMPLICATIONS
Motivation - Redemption: Eliot is trying to redeem himself for the horrible things he has done in the past; this is why the do-gooder theme of the Leverage crew appeals to him.
Paranoia: Eliot has trouble trusting anyone, even his newfound do-gooder teammates.
Aversion: Eliot dislikes guns and doesn't keep one on himself to use, in spite of his proficiency with them.
Dammit Hardison!: Eliot is easily frustrated by the quirks of his fellow Leverage teammates, particularly Hardison and Parker, often resulting in a vocal outburst.
Enemies: Eliot has a number of enemies he's beaten (or worked for) who remember him, such as the Butcher of Kiev and Damian Moreau.
Relationships: Eliot has many past romantic relationships, but struggles to keep one consistently.
Responsibility: Eliot still has residual loyalties to the principles and compatriots of his Black Ops days.

NOTES
I may have gone overboard in giving Eliot 2-ish ranks in almost every skill in the book. But maybe that's just how versatile the character is. Any fans want to weigh in?
I wanted to give Eliot 7 Stamina, too, but Power Level limits wouldn't allow for both that and 6 Fighting.

Orphan: Hardison grew up without a traditional family support structure, although he was fortunate to be raised by his foster mother "Nana."
Confidence: Hardison is overconfident when it comes to grifting, over-selling his roles. On the other hand, he is scared of doing some other tasks the team needs that are outside his comfort zone.
Relationships: Hardison worries a lot about the well-being of his friends when they get into danger, especially Parker, to whom he is definitely attracted.

Leverage's team hacker.
NOTES
Hardison -- and I'm sure he'd agree with me -- really doesn't get credit for a lot of what he does for the team. Yes, he's the hacker, and everyone knows about that aspect of his work, but really he does so much more.
First off, he's actually the source of the team's ample financial resources, thanks to his manipulation of the stock market. Second, he's probably the most frequent beneficiary of Nate's Beginner's Luck Advantage, which turns him into a jack of all trades doing things like chemistry or playing the violin. But third, he's really amazingly glib most of the time. On a team of con artists, I think he actually deserves the best Persuasion skill of the bunch, and is a close second for the best Deception score as well.

Anxiety: Parker fears social interactions, especially being hit on by men she doesn't like.
Insanity: Parker loves plummeting from high places, and generally has tastes that weird out normal people. While she's actually a pretty good driver under pressure, her driving scares normal passengers profoundly.
Sweet Sweet Cash: Parker loves cash and has a hard time letting go of it for any reason (even buying things).
Super-Stealth: Parker is especially good at sneaking up on her own allies at times when it doesn't really accomplish anything. (She can use Ultimate Stealth in these situations without spending a Hero Point.)

COMPLICATIONS
Motivation - Greed: Unlike the rest of the team, Tara still really wants to be more wealthy. She's filling in a favor to Sophie, but she wouldn't be doing it if there weren't money to be made.
Newcomer: The rest of the team wants Sophie back and slightly resent Tara taking her place. And they don't quite trust her, especially since she grifted them when she first met them.
Agent: Although she works as a grifter, Tara has FBI background. The rest of the team doesn't know if she's on good terms with the agency; either way it could make for interesting developments.
Loner: Tara prefers to work alone. Working on a team is a strange new paradigm for her.

NOTES
I wanted to add more interesting Powers to this build; at least one. But I couldn't think of anything that seemed appropriate.
That said, the skills and advantages here hopefully make Tara a better solo-mission agent than the other Leverage characters, since that's how she usually operates.

Really like these, especially Nate and Sophie. I'm a huge fan of capers in all forms, and thoroughly enjoyed Leverage. I think you may be overrating Hardison though; I don't think he has more Persuasion than Sophie or Nate, though in Sophie's case she may be cheating.

its interesting how the terrible trio ie Parker, Hardison, and Elliot all change through the seasons and where they end up at the end of the series.
