The concept sort of works, but the end run that JoAT and Reflex Memory does on Skills and Feats is too much for me. I don't mind a little bit of this kind of stuff, but it just feels like you went all in on it.

Maybe a little broader concept. IIRC, I liked your Captain Avalon.

Another option for anyone who's reading this thread, would be to play an archetype as Shock suggested.

I had a feeling as much. Variable powers are a hard sell...even to me!

The occasional Skill or Feat being rolled into a Variable structure could be okay, e.g. the stretchy guy and the "finger lockpick" (Disable Device). It's balanced by his descriptors. But not all of them.

Complications:
Uncontrolled Reaction Alek Stanislav's body is no longer that of a normal human, it has surpassed many of it's basic biological functions, and contains an atomic reaction, similar to that which fuels the sun itself. As such if Alek fails a Toughness check against an attack with either the Slashing, or Piercing descriptor by three Degrees, the attack has penetrated his incredibly dense epidermis, and he will begin to 'bleed' lethal levels of radiation into his immediate area. He is at Disadvantage using any of his Atom Splitting Array until he can take a Recover Action, or until the next scene as he struggles to stabilize his internal atomic reaction.

Think Alek, Think! Alek is first, and foremost, a scientist, and as such would prefer to resolve any conflicts through the application of his intellect and problem solving, than through the application of violence and aggression. This typically means he will attempt to resolve a conflict by observation, assessment, calculation, application and solution. He prefers not to engage in needless activities, and in any engagement will always ensure that the public is protected from the consequences of any confrontation.

Heroic Separation Alek maintains a distinct and separate heroic identity, Power Core. While some of his contemporaries within AEGIS are aware of his true identity, since distancing himself from the organization he has managed to keep a measure of distinction between the two.

A Legacy of Fallen Heroes Alek was born a few short years after the Terminus Invasion, his body forever changed by exposure to the other dimensional energies that Omega's forces utilized. He is aware of the cost the people of Freedom City paid to ensure that Omega stayed trapped within his own dimension, and since coming into his power, has vowed to do the memory of those many heroes proud by using his powers for the betterment of his fellow man.
Background: Aleksi Stanislav was born in Freedom City, in the years following the '93 Terminus Invasion. His father perished during the invasion itself, but his mother, Taneya survived, though she herself was exposed to dangerous levels of the entropic energies of Omega's home dimension. Before those energies corrupted her own genetic code, she gave birth to Aleksi, labelled a Terminus baby, he was watched closely by government agencies to determine the degree to which his genetics had been altered by the same energies that had killed his mother.

He was raised by the State, an orphan, like so many children of '93, however, his pure white hair, and purple hued eyes marked him as something else, something dangerous, after all, nobody wanted to open their home to a Terminus child. It soon became apparent that Alek could detect the strong and weak bonds between atoms; attracted to the intricate pattern of atoms and electrons, he soon excelled in his mathematics and scientific studies.

Prior to his graduation, he was approached the Department of Energy, and was enrolled at an AEGIS Science & Technology facility. When he was 23, during his first overseas mission, the Tactical Unit cleared a pocket of surviving Omega drones. Alek and his Science & Tech unit approached an advanced Terminus reactor that the Drones were using to breach the dimensional barrier and return to Omega's realm. His unique ability to discern the molecular structure of the device, Alek led the team in an attempt to disarm the device. Unfortunately, the Tactical team had failed to account for all of the surviving Drones, and one such Drone rushed Alek. As an errant blast from the drone's power staff ionized the reactor's housing, the resultant flood of dimensional energies threatened to irradiate both the Tactical and Tech squads. Alek's eyes flared, and his body was able to absorb the reactor's out put. The AEGIS team fell back, unable to recover Alek's body, and in short order they discovered that all traces of Terminus energies had disappeared. They cautiously approached the reactor, to find a nuclear shadow where the Drone had been, and Alek's unconscious form, still steaming from the energy output.

They recovered the body and returned Stateside, however, aboard the transport Alek regained consciousness. For the next six months, Alek trained with AEGIS Science & Research specialists, as they measured his capacity to absorb, redirect, and control nuclear forces. Taking the name Power Core, Alek has returned to Freedom City, and taken the mantle of a hero, like the many that gave their lives in '93.
Notes & Changes
Lowered the overall points into the Array, Atomic Bombardment became a basic Blast resisted by Toughness, Critical Fission, Damage resisted by Fortitude, now requires him to touch the target. Molecular Breakdown is now ranged as compared to perception range, and requires an attack check.

I upped his Immunity, he now has Immunity to ALL Radiation, but that itself is limited to half effect. He has Immunity to Environmental Radiation & Heat to compliment that. Also added Immunity to Starvation & Thirst, as his body begins to surpass it's original, biological nature.

Added a Benefit to represent AEGIS clearance, not direct affiliation, but he could gain access to their facilities, and workshops, with a little effort. As for his free CHA-based feat, I will take Contacts, again, to represent his ties to AEGIS, and other members of the scientific community.

The Selective Area Dazzle is limited to 8 ranks because it's 4pp/rank in active effect. That you have two Selective Area effects concerns me.

I'm debating making Selective Area a +2 Extra, as it's just too good, and largely unneeded given Takedown 2 (I prefer multiple attacks being limited to Minions as that better models the four-color genre IMO).

Otherwise, solid build, ZG!

Edit: I want to expand on my rationale: my issue isn't with Selective Area per se, but with it always in your backpocket (in an array). As a stunt, I'd have no issues.

Thanks for the compliment on the build Penny!

I'll tweak the array some, perhaps drop area on the dazzle and bombardment slots, make them both single target effects, but bake in Takedown 2 so he can goon sweep with those attacks.

We'll see, I'll play with it when I get home this afternoon.

Would still like to try for this in spite of my earlier invalidation. Before I get to into it, would you allow for a modified powerhouse? Pretty much straight from the books barring a few personal touches.

Complications
Accident: Doesn't know his own strength.
Punchline is strong. Really strong. Stronger then any human has a right to be much less someone like him. He's not aware of his own limits, heck, sometimes he doesn't think he actually has a limit. This terrible sense of misjudgment can lead to all kinds of trouble, both for the world around him and himself personally.

"Get the shrimp!"
Somehow despite proving again and again that he's not as weak as he looks, eventually someone shouts those words and he becomes an instant target for every baddie within ear's distance.

Secret power source & loss: Powers from... something!
Perhaps he had been born with them, could be that he stepped on a radioactive ant, or it might as well be his lucky underwear. Whatever it is, the source of his own powers remains a complete mystery to him and as such isn't yet aware of if he might somehow loose them! He needs to figure out what it is that makes him superhuman before some villain discovers it for him, or the consequences could be dire!

-------------------------------------
Background:
Itachi came to Freedom City as a child with his family, and grew up with a love of comics about his favorite super-heros. He wanted to be recognized like them, get his name out there, but he knew that he was only a wimpy kid. What he did have though, was a knack for making people laugh, so he focused on that.

After graduating from college years down the line, he started meandering around looking for gigs at any club that'd take him. He wasn't anything particularly special, sure, he could make people laugh once in awhile, but he just blended in with all the other aspiring comedians. The young man didn't once think about giving up however, and kept looking to his heros for inspiration in his routines.

Quite randomly and out of the blue on one Sunday evening, while going to pick up and move his favorite armchair, he somehow ended up throwing it straight through the wall! It was only some quick thinking and a retaliation that a villain frequented that part of the city did he avoid revealing his newfound powers to his landlord. All that was left to do was to decided how he was going to use these abilities, and the answer was clear as day.

He'd use them to jumpstart his career as a comedian!

Perform would definitely be background. Kn (Pop Culture) might be, depending on its scope. If it involves knowledge of the superhero community, it might not be. Language is not.

While it may be tempting to buy up Intimidate, I'm wondering what the descriptor is.
Mysteriously powerful! 22+52+9=
..The Strongest of nerds!: Enhanced Strength 16, Super Strength 7 (Heavy load: 180 Tons; Groundstrike, Thunderclap)16+14+2=22

I don't have any issues here beyond Super-Strength being a tad excessive. This is the FCU and there are League members who should probably be at the pinnacle of things. You could tame the lifting STR and add some utility powers.
Attack Bonus: +8 (Ranged: +8, Melee: +8, Grapple: +8)
Grapple is Attack bonus + STR bonus + ranks in Super-Strength, so as listed he'd have 8+12+7 or 27, which is then capped at 25.
Complications
Obsession: Loves the spotlight.
Itachi might not have any luck at his local comedy clubs, but perhaps while wearing a costume and busting crooks he'll finally get that recognition. He wants to be known, to be recognized, and he'll get there one way or another!
I"m wondering what he does to be worthy of an HP.
Addiction: Quips and one liners galore!
A comic book nerd at heart, he knows for a fact that the best heros out there are well known for dishing out iconic one-liners. He aspires to capture this trait himself, and is always looking for an opportunity to try out his latest lines regardless of how groan-inducing they might actually be.
Not sure I see something in this worthy of an HP. How does this addiction cause you trouble beyond roleplaying opportunities?
Secret: Powers from... something!
Perhaps he was born with them, stepped on a radioactive ant, or perhaps it's even his lucky underwear, but whatever the source of them he has no clue how he came by them. And as a result, he also has no idea if they might somehow go away and leave him the geek he is!
I like it when players have hooks into their background, but A) I'm not sure it's a Secret, given that implies he knows something he doesn't want anyone else to know, and B) I'd like some kind of direction to go in. Power Loss is one possibility, another might be Enemy (if the power came from something or someone else--who wants it back), etc. That kind of thing.

Morning folks, it's my first day off since Hockey Hell weekend!

Anyways, got the chance to tweak Power Core's build upthread. If you want to take a look let me know, also given the default setting for most comics is CW-level looks, I figure Alek is the hot science professor at FCU.

I'll probably add a Responsibility complication reflecting teaching schedules, grading, and the occupational favour for AEGIS as all biting into his hero'ing time.

If anyone is going to have ranks in CHA, I'd assume it to be him? I'd think he'd need some ranks in Bluff, too, to pull off his seeming "playing the role," no?
Feats: Accurate Attack, Attack Focus (ranged) 4, Attack Specialization 2 (Palooka Gauss Pistols (Device 5)), Beginner's Luck, Dodge Focus 5, Eidetic Memory, Improvised Tools, Inventor, Jack-of-All-Trades, Luck, Online Research, Precise Shot, Quick Draw, Skill Mastery 2 (Craft (Electronic), Craft (Mechanical), Disable Device, Knowledge (Technology)), Well-Informed
Quick Draw's not needed.
Powers:
Palooka Bipolar Boots (Device 2) (Hard to lose) [8 pp]
. . Flight 3 (Speed: 50 mph, 440 ft./rnd) [6 pp]
. . . . Leaping 6 (Alternate; Jumping distance: x100)
. . . . Speed 6 (Alternate; Speed: 500 mph, 4400 ft./rnd)
. . Super-Movement 1 (wall-crawling 1 (half speed)) [2 pp]
You call them "boots" but the picture shows a jet pack. Just want to clarify that. If they're boots I always thought Leaping plus a Feature "Can Hover" would be a cool way to go.

Palooka Handyman Toolkit (Device 1) (Hard to lose) [4 pp]
. . Comprehend 1 (languages - understand all) [2 pp]
. . Enhanced Trait 3 (Feats: Eidetic Memory, Improvised Tools, Jack-of-All-Trades) [5 pp]
Not sure I follow the Comprehend in the toolkit. Enhanced Eidetic Memory strikes me as a stretch. Maybe I get the JoAT, but it feels like a reach. This one is...iffy.
Complications
  • Responsibility (corporate mascot) - "Palooka Joe" is a character who represents the Bradley company. John has to be careful about not messing with that image.
I'm not sure I see what situation arises that's worthy of an HP. It sounds like roleplaying. To me, a Responsibility Complication would be something like a teenager who has to be at school and has to deal with the consequences of ditching to fight crime. School and parents/etc will be on you.
[*]Responsibility (research) - In between his crimefighting efforts, John works hard to advance Bradley technology. He really isn't holding back on an energy solution. He just hasn't found it yet.
How does this cause you trouble? While I get that Complications can be used to flesh a character out, I also need them to be operationalized.
[*]Code of Behavior (kayfabe) - John takes his character seriously and has been known to take extreme measures to maintain it, such as showing up and fighting as Palooka Joe after he, as John, was known to have broken his ankle skiing (he made constant use of the jet boots to prevent weight going onto his ankle, and he still re-injured it badly enough to know know when it's going to rain). He also grew up on syndicated episodes of Freedom Friends, and defaults to believing that villains will try to avoid excessive collateral damage, and that all heroes are upstanding paragons of morality.
I'm not sure I get this one. Secret ID? Also sounds a little gullible? Mild delusional?

With a +1 CHA bonus, you get one free related Feat. Edit: Contacts, it is.
Skills: Concentration 8 (+10), Disable Device 7 (+10), Gather Information 9 (+10), Knowledge (physical sciences) 12 (+15), Knowledge (technology) 7 (+10), Language 1 (+1), Notice 8 (+10), Sense Motive 8 (+10)
You can change Notice into Perception as it folds in the Search skill.
Feats: All-Out Attack, Benefit (AEGIS Clearance), Dodge Focus 4, Luck 2, Power Attack, Skill Mastery (Disable Device, Physical Sciences)
I forgot to detail how I'm changing Luck, but it's going to use the narrow approach where you pick the particular HP function, e.g. Luck: Instant Counter, Luck: Advantage (instead of re-roll), etc.
Powers:

. . Molecular Breakdown (Drain 10) (Array; drains: single trait - toughness, DC 20; Affects Objects (Only), Range (ranged))
With this descriptor, I'm not sure why it doesn't work on humans. Feels like it should be Affects Objects (+1). Why not limit it with an Increased Action (full round) to indicate concentration or something?
Complications:
Uncontrolled Reaction Alek Stanislav's body is no longer that of a normal human, it has surpassed many of it's basic biological functions, and contains an atomic reaction, similar to that which fuels the sun itself. As such if Alek fails a Toughness check against an attack with either the Slashing, or Piercing descriptor by three Degrees, the attack has penetrated his incredibly dense epidermis, and he will begin to 'bleed' lethal levels of radiation into his immediate area. He can scrub the immediate vicinity of any adverse radiation through the use of Radiation Absorption, after recovering from the damage, but he should leave the vicinity of any living beings to avoid inflicting any adverse conditions upon them.
I appreciate this, but it can't be something that's usable as an attack. I'd rather see it as something that's built on the Side-Effect Flaw with an effect of your choice, e.g. Damage/Fatigue/Confusion, etc.
I need a better understanding of how this causes trouble for him.
Heroic Separation Alek maintains a distinct and separate heroic identity, Power Core. While some of his contemporaries within AEGIS are aware of his true identity, since distancing himself from the organization he has managed to keep a measure of distinction between the two.
Not sure this is worthy of a Complication unless there's trouble for him if/when someone makes the connection. Secret ID or Public ID is worthy of a Complication. Being in the middle, not so much.
This strikes me as one of those Complications that's really more background than Trouble. It kind of sounds like a Motivation, it needs to "complicate" your life. Would his energies provide some kind of conduit for Omega to come back? What's the downside to this legacy?
