Iona
HP:1
Cnd: Normal
PP:0

Iona spends the rest of the afternoon alone in "her wing" of the fallout shelter. Her mind oscillates between constructing a new base and contemplating her peers.

Peter - she muses - might be good company. They share an innate curiosity about the mysteries of reality, even if they serve two different masters. Diego on the other hand frightens her, almost as much as Praetor Null himself. One consolation is the fact that Diego seems committed to the Cause. What worries her is how much Diego's personal loyalty to Null might be exploited to the detriment of the common good. Only time will tell. At least we were able to come to a compromise on the base's security, staff, and departments. Perhaps that is a sign of better cooperation to come.

So there she stands, silently looking at the walls of a master bedroom and bath. This room will need to be enlarged. Both it and the master bathroom will need to be tripled in size to house the beds and equipment necessary for a modest infirmary and laboratory.

She makes a mental note of all the devices on her wish list. This place will not rival Dr. Sokolov's facility, but it still has the potential to be quite sophisticated. She spends the rest of the night refining her words for the meeting with Sokolov tomorrow. She must meet her escorts in the tunnels just below the foundry and trek back through the dangerous Undercity to the place of her "birth". As a complex creation of the Good Doctor, she requires routine maintenance, the type of which she is not capable of giving to herself.

Though she has only been out from under Sokolov's protection for a few days, she is eager to see him again. His calm confidence has always brought her comfort. When the time comes, she wraps her head and face completely in her dingy burlap shawl and leaves for the rendezvous point.

Meeting with Sokolov
Iona’s visit with Dr. Sokolov was short. He did not fancy being away from his research for very long. The young female cyborg kept her questions and requests narrowly focused on the construction and equipment necessary for the new base. She had rehearsed her “pitch”’ repeatedly during downtime at the fallout shelter. There would be more weekly visits to Dr. Sokolov’s hideaway in the future and thus many more opportunities to adjust her resource requests. She had questions to ask about the politics within the Cause, but she never quite found the right moment to ask. She hoped the chance might present itself in the future.

Building Time
She had a vision of how the infirmary and lab should be. Peter’s help would undoubtedly be needed. The excavation of earth behind the walls of the fallout shelter could be done quickly and with great precision due to his powers.

The larger area would be the infirmary. Iona imagined an area large enough to treat many soldiers during a conflict, a sort of field hospital. In time, perhaps it could be expanded to be an even larger facility. That would depend on the success of recruiting more soldiers for the fight against Stronghold. Most of the infirmary would house “recovery” beds with some for pre- (but most for post-op) patients. Two separate surgical tables would be closed off by a wall and sealed tight so that no infections could pass. These rooms would have to be kept extraordinarily sterile. Otherwise an area for supply-storage as well as a computer-area for the input of data on various patients would be needed.

Right next to the infirmary would be the laboratory. During periods of conflict, this room would be almost as busy as the infirmary. Bloodwork, x-rays, ultrasounds, MRIs, and other data collection procedures could be done with equipment stored in this area (if the lab is granted the necessary equipment). This would also be Iona’s “castle”, a place where she could retreat into the depths of scientific investigation on the pressing medical issue of the day. The ability to do cutting edge research would -in part- depend upon the equipment that Dr. Sokolov would allow her to have. Getting the facility up and operating would take many weeks of round the clock work. Fortunately, the Good Doctor created her with no need to sleep.

Before leaving to patrons
With the general agreement made, Diego set to work doing an initial pass of the base with security and defense in mind. A more detailed analysis could be made later. Mildly satisfied with some ideas, Diego inquires if Peter could unblock the opening enough for Sanders to get through to get her input on the arrangements. He knew that coming to what they had was difficult enough plus the current deficiencies such as communications, a way in outside of prying eyes, and such so changing it at this point was nearly out of the question. Not with Iona being as difficult and paranoid as she had been.

Once a sufficient entry point had been created for Tilly, Diego gave her a call over the comm links interrupting her nerdy roleplaying game. He never saw the fun of those, but his life was a role play already. When she arrived, he made sure to meet her in more human looking form like he did before his ascension to put her at ease and gave her the grand tour of the place beseeching her for any feedback she may have. On top of that, he provided the details of the plan they pain stakenly had put together. For the obvious issues she might point out, his reasoning tended to be they had little choice as they needed to work with Iona who wasn't the most tactical minded.

Before she left or went to bed if she decided to stay the night, Diego asked her to work with Peter on ideas for where to make a secret entrance and tunnel into the shelter. Also, he asked to pass along a message for Null they would like to meet at a secure location. The Colonel didn't seemed inclined to help them too much so he didn't tempt the Ascendent link.

When the day came to ask their respective patrons for help, Diego made arrangements with Iona to to meet back in one day and gave her a burner cell phone to use with the condition it was only used to send a single innocent looking message that wouldn't trigger Stronghold. He also made sure to remind everyone that the communications were insecure. Stronghold may even be monitoring the frequencies of the base, so no signals should leave or enter the base unless on a highly secure device. After the previous incidents, Diego wasn't inclined to suffer due to others ignorance again.

After all initial arrangements were made, he left with Sanders and Peter if he was inclined to meet with Praetor Null under the guise of a homeless person with various generic features associated with those he saw around the city to blend. While he could change his appearance at will, the tough bit of making the ask that could either save his reputation with Praetor Null or get him killed lay ahead
Meeting With Null
Diego approached his meeting with Null at the appointed place with the same matter of fact, emotionless reporting of his previous meetings. There was no way around it. If the base was to become operational, it needed support staff to run it in the absence of Peter, Iona, and Diego. When meeting his master, Diego felt it only appropriate to use his true form of a black nannite mist regardless of who else was present. It started as before with a report of what had transpired, the plan that was hatched, who was being asked for what resources, and the various reasonings. During it all, Diego made known his misgivings, but conveyed it as the only way forward given Iona's trepidation's.

Following his report, Diego gave a break down of the personal being requested and appropriate skillsets for each portion of the base. Given its current size and minimal use in operations, he didn't expect a very big staff. Mostly enough to keep the lights on plus lightly staff the various departments. Diego knew the resources of Praetor Null were not infinite, so kept that in mind with his asks.

Before leaving the meeting place with Praetor Null granting the request, making it clear Peter and Diego would get no more favours from him until they earned it, Diego waited for Praetor Null to leave. Addressing Tilly again, he asked her for help as she was able in liasing between the people assigned and the three creatures from two factions who were forced together. He knew he was asking much of her, but it had to be done. Like always, he made his appreciation known. For all others, he would have assumed they should just follow orders. Tilly was special, he just couldn't place exactly why her saving his life would mean so much.
Building Time
Order of business number one was to get the entrance for moving supplies and people built. Peters skill like before helped a lot in this regard. Once finished, Diego started putting the expertise of the security and defense people to work mapping out the security measures to put in place based on the resources provided by Dr. Sokolov. Having the security drones present clearly caused friction, but everyone was professionals. Orders were orders. Once it was all mapped out, Diego trusted the leads of the departments to oversee the work checking in with him as needed.

Security policy wise, he laid out his guidelines. No communications of an insecure or possibly insecure nature into or out of the base. The base was secret, keep it that way unless people need to know. Privacy should be respected, unless base security required otherwise. Most of all, use of the entrance into the foundry was to be limited.

His skill was never in building, so after setting guidelines and trusting the people Null assigned to implement proper security, he went to take care of other matters when he wasn't needed. The local population of Ward 3 could be a problem. So, Diego under the same appearance as the one who first showed up plus others just in case, mingled with the various vagrants ingratiating his various forms. While not useful immediately, one or two spread to three and more to eventually a majority of the Wards homeless who were usually ignored. Once a critical mass was gathered, he could turn that into his own network of the Ward to spread to the city at large.
Its rather lengthy, but the key points are he's reviewing the setup, but leaving the construction to those better equipped at that skill set Security policy wise, he is pushing.

1) No comms into or out of the bae if even possibly insecure.
2) Spreading word of the base as needed.
3) Respect the privacy of Dr. Sokolov's people while working along side them with security trumping privacy.
4) Use the secret entrance and don't compromise it.

For the time he isn't supervising he is laying the groundwork for a forgotten network in Ward 3.

Peter Ezima
HP: 1

Peter was very busy over the following weeks. First carefully unsealing and resealing the hole up top so Diego could arrange his tet a tet with Tilly Sanders. Then he and Sanders put their heads together to plan out the design, direction and construction of the secret entrance and linking tunnel between the base to be and the Underground.

Then came the long lengthy task of planning out the renovation of the existing fallout shelter into the full scale base. Carefully planned excavation and expansion once Peter determined the space requirements for everything in mind. That provided a taxing enough headache, trying to complete that without trouble from more utility lines or anything else that could be noticed by Stronghold.

Next, overseeing construction. Peter's ability to create and twist matter at whim provided only limited benefit here. Even with his super-intellect and Ascendant physiology, the process was mentally taking if not physically. Rest, from that perspective provided some help - Peter couldn't actually process any faster than the human norm. The mind still needed to relax after strain.

Now installing and linking the many technological systems. Defense and security in coordination with the appropriate personnel. Integrating the base's computer network, while providing air-gapped computers designated respectively for Iona (and other Sokolov loyalists) and for the Null faction.

Everything seemed to proceed as hoped - which bothered Peter. The faux-Jaguar raid was probably the last time his group had performed as planned without screwing things up until now. Well, no more. The Ascendants had been scattered, but he, Diego and Iona could bury the hatchet.

Now, they had the opportunity to make Stronghold truly tremble in fear.

The initial planning stages, when it is just Diego, Iona, and Peter at the fallout shelter is the quietest time at the new headquarters of your joint operation. The first voice added to the chorus of activity, Corporal Tilly Sander, is brought in by Diego. When she arrives she brings with her a folder of documents from Praetor Null, and delivers them to Diego saying that they are for his eyes only and passes on instructions from the Praetor that the documents are to be destroyed after he has reviewed them. She also come bearing a gift for Peter in the form of some maps on the underground infrastructure of the area including pipes and electrical lines.

Tilly aids Diego in brainstorming security and defensive measures, then translates Diego's plans for Peter and works with him to flesh them out. The Corporal ends up stay at the shelter with you during the duration of your endeavors, though she does head out as needed to ferry requested messages.

Those of you meeting with Null to request boons of them find yourselves gathering in a dark and isolated location, with Corporal Sander standing watch outside of the gathering while you hold your meeting. Being in Null's presence is never a comforting thing. There is always something eerie and alien about them: the voices they speak in, the inhuman way they move, and the fluid gestures they make that seem to communicate something unspoken yet indecipherable. They listen though, and your request is granted with a reminder that their expectations for you are high.

Iona returns to Dr. Sokolov's hideaway to find the top floor, that being the one with the hospital facilities, occupied by a medical professionals seeing to the needs of Under City citizenry. This shouldn't be a surprise to Iona, as her creator had informed her of his intent to do so before her departure to aid the Ascendants. While Praetor Null is cold and distant in their interaction with the Ascendants, Dr. Sokolov is doting and reaffirming when dealing with Iona. Though there is always the sense that he is busy and something important requires his attention. He listens to her, but the moments she has his full undivided attention are brief and uncommon. When she makes her requests of him Dr. Sokolov asks what they are to gain from giving so much to Null's people, how are they to benefit by sacrificing their own resources that could be used elsewhere? In the end he relents, and voices support for Iona's endeavors.

Over the following month people from the two factions mingle at the site you have chosen for your new head quarters. Null's people are disciplined and professional. Most have some connections to the military, law enforcement, or were recruited and trained by someone from one of these type of backgrounds. Dr. Sokolov's people, in contrast, are almost all from civilian backgrounds and their disposition is more relaxed. The combat droids brought in by Iona to augment the base's security are disconcerting partially because they are rarely seen unless they need to enforce the will of Diego, Iona, or Peter and when they are needed they appear as though out of nowhere.

There is a lot of work, but much of the social stress is reduced for the three of you when Diego institutes Corporal Sander as a sort of administrator, acting as a go between from you and the people who are to be working under your leadership. Peter is still involved in almost every construction aspect of the new HQ, but he has people working along side him excavating with tools and installing equipment. Iona has her personal projects but she gets to deal with the awkwardness of assimilating into a crowd of subordinates that are not of her master's choosing and whose first loyalty is to Null. Not her and not Dr. Sokolov. But if ever she feels threatened there is the ever present icon in her vision denoting a security team of lethal machines are on standby to heed her summons. In fact, until she dismisses it, one of the combat droids always remains visible at her side as an intimidating escort.

While people from the two factions are present working on the base you can feel the tension in the air. There are frequent verbal duels, and a couple physical fights actually break out. Nothing that can't be broken up and nothing that results in serious injury, but it leaves a stark impression that trying to force the two groups together long term would have seriously exacerbated the problems witnessed during the past month. In the end, after all the work in done, Dr. Sokolov's people withdraw from the fallout shelter, leaving Null's to take over.

Diego spent some time sowing seeds for his plans in the fields of Ward 3. Like any crop, it would take time to grow. For now he had acclimated to the area, and introduced his aliases to a number of people who might be useful to him.

Iona, during her weekly maintenance visits to Dr. Sokolov's complex, is invited to assist him in his study of the Ascension Event nanite samples that she had collected and turned over to him. Nothing significant is learned about Ascension itself, but the experience is fruitful in that she is able to learn a lot from Dr. Sokolov. Some meaningful steps into a world of science untouchable by all but a handful of minds are taken during those visits.

A lot of the work for the new HQ is reliant on Peter, especially the more sophisticated innovations into security, defense, and computer infrastructure. Unlike Iona he does not have the benefit of a mentor to help guide him into the new frontiers his mind can now venture into. Instead he has to experiment and often ends up fumbling blindly as he explores his limitations. Both of his mind and of his abilities.

Saturday 9th, Marsh 2019 - Herald the Night

It has been a little over a month since you began the work on your base and it is nearing completion. Only a few final tasks need resolving before everything you planned out comes to fruition. On the eighth of March you received a message from Colonel Costa briskly informing you that you are to receive a visit from Praetor Null in twenty-four hours. She advises you to take appropriate measures to host them. Whatever precautions you choose to take, time passes quickly, and soon you find that the hour of the Praetor's arrival draws near.

Diego looses his Lasting Injuries Complication as the main story progresses, though it remains in effect during the events of Telephone Game.

Speaking of the side story for Diego and Iona, posting for it should be secondary to the main story taking place in this thread. Also, until that side story is resolved your HQ's Communications Feature will remain as is. Installation of the equipment is "taking longer than expected", assuming Iona and Diego succeed.

I will be PMing Diego with the 'your eyes only' information from Praetor Null.

I am going give you the opportunity to do some RPing before Null arrives, if you wish to, or note any special actions you take knowing that Null is going to be visiting you brand new HQ.

Despite his various excursions to sow future opportunities, Diego kept up to date with the goings on of the work in a more covert fashion from time to time. With much of the mundane oversight delegated to Sanders, Diego slowly let her take on more and more. Praetor Null had not made him for such mundane administrative matters and Sanders was proving quite capable of handling what Peter did not. Through the month of work, Diego was also digesting the information provided to him that was promptly burned with the ashes spread. There was much to contemplate. Per his instructions though, he kept it to himself. When asked about it, Diego would respond with variations of its beyond your clearance level or it was not his information to share. Fortunately, the military people got it. Dr. Sokolov's people he largely ignored.

When news came down of Praetors Null imminent arrival, Diego made an exceedingly rare appearance to a majority of the bases staff. Being a floating black cloud combined with his stricter military like voice, he posed an intimidating figure. His words weren't as intimidating. They came across as more like a tough as nails general speaking to his troops to congratulate them on their work. In private, he spoke with Tilly, Iona, and Peter about ensuring everything was in good working order for Null's visit with a suggestion not to advertise it. He would also turn to Tilly and ask to have a room prepared for the meeting.

While Peter and Tilly doubtless knew what to expect of Null, Diego paid special attention to preparing Iona. She had been around Null before, but he was still uncertain of her discipline given she was a creation of Sokolov. So, Diego made sure to highlight everyone should be succinct and to the point. With that, he retired to his room, if you could call a 10x10 space with no lights or furniture a room, to prepare. He didn't like it showing, but his last encounter where Null was unpleased still haunted his nightmares.

Iona
HP:2
Cnd: Normal
PP:0

Iona knows that Dr. Sokolov’s time is precious to him. When she returns for her weekly maintenance, she uses that brief period to speak with him. On her first visit back to the place of her “’birth”, the equipment requests along with their justification are the topics of conversation. She was ordered by Dr. Sokolov himself to work with Null’s Ascendants, so she does not express her deep-seated worries about such an arrangement. It is something that, for the time being, she must accept. As Sokolov utilizes his super-science technology to run diagnostics and repairs on Iona, she informs him of her progress: “The facility is coming along nicely, my Master. Though the infirmary and lab technology do not rival your base, it is a respectable foundation from which future improvements can be made. I intend to provide state-of-the-art medical aid the soldiers of our cause. And in my spare time, I intend to utilize the laboratory to conduct experiments. From time to time, I may ask your opinion if I feel that results are worthy of your attention.” It suddenly dawns upon her that she has never really gleaned Dr. Sokolov’s opinion about the viability of the Cause – whether it was likely to succeed or fail. After pausing a moment, she asks meekly, “Master…do you think we shall ever re-take Hadron City?

Other visits to Dr. Sokolov provide important lessons in scientific knowledge: Lessons that could have taken many decades had she to discover the knowledge on her own. In the end, she is glad that she handed the Nanites over to her Master. She is doubtful that she could have learned more about them on her own.

On her final visit to Sokolov’s base before the visitation of Praetor Null, Iona is a little more nervous than normal. During her routine maintenance, she discusses the normal matters of business with the Good Doctor: progress on the base, relations with Praetor Null’s work-staff, as well as any pertinent knowledge on Peter and Diego. As Sokolov finishes tuning Iona’s systems, she once again waxes inquisitive. “Master, I have read that there was another leader among you. A great Praetor named Anastasia. Whatever happened to her? Have you ever thought or asking her to return back to the Cause?

After returning to the Ascendant’s facility, she works hard during the final 24 hours to get everything ready for Praetor Null’s visit. Despite her fear of Null, she still views him as a legitimate leader of the Cause. As such, he must be obeyed unless she has overwhelming reasons not to do so. She is courteous to his medical-staffers, always saying “’please”’ and “thank you” when appropriate. She does not walk on egg shells, however. During emergencies and "crunch time"' when deadlines must be met, the pleasantries are dropped. Still, Iona treats them with respect. When Null arrives, she does not want any of her staffers to say that they have been mistreated by her.

Peter was thankful Tilly Sanders was along to help split the oversight and workload. On top of all that, he was pushing himself to the limit - which would be pleasing to explore if he wasn't simultaneously working on a deadline and not much margin for sustaining errors. At a time like this, he was jealous of Iona receiving support from Dr. Sokolov. Of course, even if he hadn't transgressed with his hacking attempts, the political tension between Praetor Null and the Doctor would have prevented him from that anyway.

Whatever instructions Diego had received from Null, it was clearly need to know, and if he felt Peter should be informed he'd have done so. Peter Ezima was polite and respectful to everyone, regardless of which faction they were in. More bluntness crept in when the pressure was on, but like Iona he had no desire to act the bully.

Now though, he was conferring with Sanders over a review of everything to make sure they were ready for Null's visit. "All systems have been triple-checked. Everything is functioning in good order. That's the technical side. What about the staff?"

"The real question, dragotsennyy ... "

Dr. Sokolov briefly dips into a Slavic accent when saying the word 'dragotsennyy', then returns to the Midwestern one that he normally used.

"... is: what will remain after the coming conflict and can it be held in the face of a world's opposition? Regrettable things will need to be done, and you must be ready not only enact them but also to propose them."
Iona wrote:Master, I have read that there was another leader among you. A great Praetor named Anastasia. Whatever happened to her? Have you ever thought or asking her to return back to the Cause?
When Iona makes her inquiry Dr. Sokolov seems to debate whether to brush it off or properly address it. In the end motions her over to a computer. While he speaks the man's fingers tap at a series of keys.

"When Doctor Impossible attacked with his American allies Anastasia did not fight. She withdrew deeper into shadow and hid with those loyal to her. A dereliction of duty Null is likely to perceive as a betrayal. I certainly could not persuade Null to stay their hand against her, but perhaps someone they trust could."

As he finishes speaking he looks to the computer in a manner that invites Iona to follow suit. As she does the screen lights up.

Just before their conversation Diego had given his speech to the staff. On it's conclusion a room full of people put a fist to their heart, then raised it in the air in salute. After being dismissed the crowd relaxed and melted away to return to their duties. Peter and Tilly remained having their discussion about the status of the facility and the personnel serving in in. Corporal Sander held a cup of coffee in hand. She was drinking a lot more of it since her responsibilities had grown, given the workload everyone had to deal with for the base.

"Chief White in security is griping about the robots not being under his direct command, but he'll deal. Dr. Franks, the botanist running the greenhouse is requesting a meeting with you, Iona, and Diego. Not high priority though. There have been come complaints about lack of a secure place to store vehicles. Having to hide your ride in ruble and hope no one steals it is something they're concerned about. Otherwise we're good. Got the meeting room set up with cameras and listening devices off and two guards at the door."

Diego sat silent listening to the status reports. Peter was well equipped to handle the engineering side of things with Tilly proving to be a capable administrator. Reports of facilities lacking was not new to Diego who already anticipated them, but given the scant resources and having to placate Dr. Sokolov's side for support left little options. Overtime, they would expand. Perhaps even spread to getting the factory up and running again discretely.

After the two finish their status, Diego simply nods. Movements like that were uncomfortable to him, but he too had to make sacrifices. Tilly was under enough strain already. It was no use being a menacing floating black cloud around her. "After Praetors Null visit, we can tend to the request. If plans I have in motion come to fruition, we may yet have a secure place that is watched for us to stash vehicles.", says Diego.

Peter still felt twinges of nervousness. "Null should be satisfied."

Iona's last visit with Dr. Sokolov has given her much to consider. Her mind races, concerned with preparations for Praetor Null's visit as well as her own pet research projects around the laboratory. Add this to the fact that she is still getting to know the infirmary-staff, their strengths and weaknesses, and she has much to occupy her thoughts. If there is an emergency and her medical staff is forced to work under adverse conditions, she could not yet vouch for their competence. Only time would tell.

Iona is present when Diego gives his speech to the entire staff. Though she has no stomach in which to get "butterflies", she stands silently anxious knowing that Null would soon be present. The presence of Tilly at the meeting sets her at ease though. She is not the hard-edged woman that Colonel Costa is, but a little more approachable...likeable. If Master has created me in the image of a woman, then I think Corporal Sander is the kind of woman I should like to emulate in some regards. If chance permits, I should like to know her better.

Iona looks around at Diego, Peter, and Tilly. "How much time do we have before Preator Null arrives? Do we have time to meet with Dr. Franks?"

Dark lips parted as Tilly drank from her coffee mug while Diego and Peter gave their responses to her report from the staff. There was no debate or back talk. She had only given them the information that was requested of her. When Iona voiced her question about time, and showed an interest in speaking with Dr. Franks the Corporal opens her mouth to speaks. As she does a young man in a dark uniform briskly approaches and salutes; his fist lightly thumping over his heart before raising into the air ahead of him an angle.

"Sirs. Ma'am. Praetor Null requests your presence in room twenty-three."

The messenger remains stationary until dismissed, looking between the two Ascendants and Iona when he relayed the information. Tilly herself offers a brief ...

"… about that long."

… as a verbalized response to Iona. There is a brief unsettled look that passed between Sander and the uniformed man. Room twenty-three was the one set aside for the meeting with Null. There had been no prior report or warning, neither from personnel or security systems, of the Praetor's presence on the base and yet they were waiting in the room Tilly had recently set aside for your meeting with them.

When the three of you make your way to room twenty-three there are stiff backed uniformed guards with sidearms at their hips waiting outside. They each offer a salute, then one open the door for you. Inside the aesthetic is simple. Unadorned walls. A single conference table with uncomplicated chairs around it. The room is well lit. Maybe a little too bright for people with sensitive eyes.

Praetor Null is seated at the far end of the table, facing the door. Their attire … black. Most of it is obscured by the folds of a hooded duster, which is pulled up partially concealing their face. Not that one would see Null's face were it lowered. They wear a porcelain white Vancian volto mask with black eyes and lips. After you have entered Null raises a gloved hand and tilts it palm up towards the other chairs. As though a host inviting guests to seat themselves. Behind you the door is closed by one of the guards.

Only after all three of you have taken a chair does Null speak. When they do it is initially in the voice of a young girl, a child, with a Haitian accent.

"Our time in the shadows is drawing to an end. I have learned that Stronghold is in the process of unlocking a secret of Imperator's that will allow them to find our people wherever they may be."

As they spoke Null's hands maneuvered in from of themselves, and their fingers slowly curled in the air. Then the voice they spoke in shifted to that of a matured woman with a Scandinavian accent. The sound was gruff, as though they had spoked a pack of cigarettes' a day for most of their life.

"That is not for you to deal with."

A singular finger pointed between the three, as though Null could pin them in place and stop them from commenting on the information they had just dropped on Diego, Iona, and Peter. The Praetor's hand relaxed afterwards and they returned to sluggishly curling and twisting their long fingers through the air. This time they spoke with the voice of a man with a French accent.

"You are to amass the forces we will use to retake the city. Recruit and train. Gather allies. You have three months. Then we must act."

There is a long pause. The lifeless eyes of Null's mask rest of the three of you. Then, after the gravity of what the Praetor has said has had a chance to sink in, them make a languid inviting gesture. As though granting permission to speak.

Diego Gonzalez
HP: 2
CND: Haunted, but fine
Form: Solid

Diego wasn't the least bit unnerved by Praetor Null's entrance. After seeing the various horrors he was capable, Diego didn't put anything past the former security head of Imperator. Knowing a meeting room before being told as a small feat compared to making the Ascendants from foreign matter. In his nannites, Diego could feel that the source was slowly coming to earth. Something beyond comprehension eve in his evolved form. The fortunate arrival time also saved an unpleasant exchange of Diego chastising Iona for priorities.

Before turning back into his black mist native form, Diego turned to Tilly. "We will see to the soldiers and support staff being equipped with better weaponry and a vehicle store even if in rubble patrolled by homeless as soon as we can.", says Diego as the last soft thing he said before the meeting. "Lets not keep one of our patrons waiting.", coldly says Diego. There was no use reminding the others again of the communication protocol. If they broke it, Diego would was his hands of it, especially Iona if she faltered in the meeting. Peter was his comrade and she was a forced ally.

As the doors were opened for the team to enter, Diego "flinched" a little. He was so used to the dark such brightness threw him slightly off balance for a nanosecond. Taking his seat, he hovered over it listening to the Praetor speak. Diego knew better than to jump in until asked to speak. Another thing he knew was not to pry into matters he was told not to pry. Praetor Null had his reasons and Diego knew first hand to not cause any issues for it or there would be serious consequences.

Once prompted to speak, Diego was brief and succinct. "We will marshal the forces you require Praetor. Is there any specialty your plan will require we should pay extra attention?", inquires Diego.

Iona
HP:2
Cnd: Normal
PP:0

Iona waits until both Diego and Peter finish speaking. They are more truly "Children of Null" than she, and so she shows deference. Holding off until the end gives her time to think. Should I mention it? We need all the allies we can get. Dr. Sokolov did leave the option open to me. Why would he give me the information if not to eventually share with Praetor Null? How shall I word this so as not to arouse their ire?

Eventually her time ran out. The two Ascendants had made their comments and asked their questions. It was her turn.

"Great Praetor...", she says softly, "...I'm glad we meet again under circumstances that are not so...confrontational." She bows her head as a show of submission to Null's authority.

"I hope that our facility, and my skills in particular, will serve your soldiers and those of the Cause well. We are eager to put our skills to the test."

After this short period of pleasantries, Iona pauses to signal a change in topic. "There is just one delicate matter that I wish to bring to your attention. There is no way to avoid the potential volatility of the issue, so I shall simply be blunt. You have ordered us to gather allies, and their is one ally, a very significant one, who still waits to be approached. I am speaking of the Praetor Anastasia. She has contacted Dr. Sokolov, perhaps she has also contacted you. If so, then what I am about to say will come as no surprise. She wishes to help us in capturing Hadron City back. Furthermore, she wishes to help us secure the city after our campaign is complete. The Doctor informed me that you might very well be hostile to that idea. It is only a suggestion; and I submit to your will, whatever your decision may be."

Diego was the first to speak and it was he whom Null's attention came to settle on first. They were silent as the float black mass requested information. Then, when they responded, their voices rolled out words in ever changing accents, as though a rotating congregation of people spoke in turn. One after the other.

"We have very few quality vehicles at our disposal and mobility is a crucial factor in warfare. While Stronghold does not employ many tanks in urban environs, they make ample use of armored transports, and our supply of heavy weapons is less than adequate. Other than manpower, these two shortfalls are worth bearing in mind."

While Peter either held his tongue or ruminated on what he wished to say over an extended period, it was Iona who spoke next, and Null redirected their gaze to her. Though they did not interrupt her, careful observation of Null would reveal that their finger movements had changed when the cyborg proposed working with Anastasia. They were more tense. As though crushing some invisible item in their grasp.

"Dr. Sokolov is in contact with the deserter Anastasia and she has made this proposal to him. They must have a planned meeting place to discuss an alliance. So tell me, where is Anastasia hiding?"

Null waited for Iona to share the desired information. A subtle nod of acknowledgement followed.

"I appreciate your sharing this information. However, there is only one Praetor."

With that statement time seemed to slow. Perhaps due to a heightened awareness due to an instinctual sense of impending danger. Whatever the case, it felt as though there was a weight behind Null's gaze as they looked upon Iona. A weight that threatened to crush her under it. The fingers of Null's hand began to curl into hooks, and their tips extend unnaturally into points ...
OOC wrote:I am going to assume Iona would tell Null about the location Anastasia invited Dr. Sokolov to meet her at. If you feel she wouldn't I can edit my post. It will not change much though.

Iona calling Anastasia a Praetor made this situation go from tense to potentially bad. Anastasia is a deserter and Iona, knowingly or not, just implied the woman should have authority equal to Null. There has to be some kind of unpleasant consequence if that stands. At the same time I realize Iona was clearly trying to show that she recognized Null's authority and that she accepts their leadership of the movement (though she wound up contradicting that). So I will give you some options.

1.) Null does something unpleasant to Iona. In this situation I'll give you the option to take a one-shot Complication (the details you will receive later) reflecting that some of her systems are damaged by what Null does to her. The Complication will last the duration of a mission. In effect it will take that long for Dr. Sokolov to acquire what she needs for repairs. If you accept this setback Iona will receive 1 HP.

or

2.) You may make a Persuasion check for Iona to realize she said something she shouldn't have and quickly retract it or make some other kind of recovery. I am not going to tell you the DC. Attractive bonus will not apply. Diego and Peter may step in to Aid her (whomever has the highest modifier leads the roll) by speaking on Iona's behalf. However, if you fail the check, Null expresses their displeasure and you will not get a HP for the negative effect it has.

After this is resolved, we'll move on to address Iona's actual proposal. Because Iona dropped two big social bombs, one in the midst of the other.
