"We have been assigned to work together." Peter replied, smiling politely. He had gone too far and Diego had paid the price, covering for him. There was no room for double-dealing here. "You are right, we would have to examine the location for ourselves - but I can repair structural deficiencies and remodel rooms to fit our plans."

"I do not have schematics." Iona states matter-of-factly. "We will need to explore both the above-ground and basement-areas of the building. I have a vague idea of where a proper med-bay and lab should be, but until I actually see the rooms and the condition they are in, then I shall not commit to using them."

The female cyborg shifts her eyes from Diego to Peter and back. "Dr. Sokolov recommended it for a reason. I do not think he would knowingly suggest an unsuitable base. Of course, anyone could make a mistake."
Its tough to tell if Diego is just a dark spot or Diego. Without a body, normal bodily movements were impossible to read. "I do not believe Dr. Sokolov would risk angering Praetor Null. So, I agree the location is worth examining for suitability. Dr. Sokolov is also more inclined to things that feed his ego than running a proper covert base though, so we shall see.", says Diego in a cold fashion as to not betray any signs of emotion or preference. If the words weren't clearly opinions, they may have well been dictionary entries.
"So long as there is no more betrayal, there should be no issues with cooperation. I see no reason we will not have a functioning base of operations soon enough. If nothing more, I suspect all of you would prefer to be somewhere else such as examining the location right now.", says Diego. If he had a face, it would be looking about the building on the brink of falling over. He wasn't even sure he would be ok.

OOC wrote:Iona, your escort did not accompany you to the meeting. She would not accompany you to the meeting even if you invited her to do so. She didn't go any further than the sewer exit. The rest of the way you followed directions that she gave you. The meeting site wasn't too far away from where you separated. She did say that she would wait ten minutes, in case you needed her, before leaving.

Now, moving things forward. You three seem ready to go. We'll say you took the sewers and took your time, being careful as you moved to Ward 3. You'll take longer than if I asked you to make a roll, but you are not pressed for time, and I want to progress your narrative rather than get you wrapped up in a random event that could potentially derail things before you event get started.
You depart from the wrecked building and return to the sewers, the three of you together now. It takes perhaps more time than you would like. Navigating round under ground is not like the surface. You get turned around, have to backtrack, or make detours to avoid areas you thought were safe. Recent events have caused changes. The three of you make it to Ward 3 without any serious issue, however. When you surface into the shadows between what use to be two buildings you find the section of the city to be a new ruin. There are signs that suggest this was once a manufacturing industrial center for the city, now dated since the construction of the Forge complex.

The roads are clogged with wreckage and rubble that the recovery work that has begun elsewhere in the city has yet to touch. Dangerous lopsided or crumbling structures are common. Impressive holes, gutting some buildings, are regular sights as well. It looks like this Ward may have took it harder that the rest … or some singularly disastrously event. People in ragged, worn, and dirty clothes are move about the rubble strew streets, but mostly keep out of the open. As if trying not to present themselves as targets. There are no Stronghold vehicles in the area. If there are foot patrols in the Ward, they are not immediately present in this area.

In any case, Iona knows where you are going, and between the three of you, you are able to make your way to a three story bricked building with small broken windows near the top of the structure, rather than at the ground floor. There are fist size holes in the walls, that you can see from a distance. Even with that structural damage it is in better condition than any other structure in the area.

Diego wasn't happy with the current predicament. Having to rely on Dr. Sokolov, working with Iona, and having no fallbacks felt like a recipe for failure. If his punishment for failing to keep Peter in line was anything though, it was a good guide not to let those he was in charge of even nominally fail again. What he went through, he didn't even know was possible. Perhaps it was the nannites body he now possessed or maybe it was that he had avoided pain for so long. As the three made their way through the sewers, Diego kept his composure, but was still having flashes of things he couldn't even put into words.

To make the trip, once in the sewers again, Diego took the form of a homeless man he once saw on the streets of Seville. The man was in his forties by appearance and his body showed signs of living in poverty for far too long. To fit in better though, Diego adopted the garb of the other homeless he saw in the streets of Hadron City. Changing his clothes was getting easier. This time, he was able to form dirty cargo pants, a brown poncho with a hood, and an old shirt with holes in its sleeves. None of it looked new or even made in the last decade.

Once getting to the location, Diego realized he would have fit right in with the residents if not for Iona and Peter. Still, it seemed secure by its isolation. Maybe a few drones might fly overhead sometimes or foot patrols might try to make their way through the area, but overall getting armoured vehicles in seemed like it would be a challenge. If not for Peter, he would have been concerned about getting building supplies for the facilities they would require.

With an eye towards detail, Diego took in the scene for any possible hidden cameras, cctv cameras, or drone flights. Anything that might hint at surveillance. Last thing he wanted was to be spied on the entire time they were getting setup. With their small numbers, they could likely fight well, but would give the game away rather easy for what they could do to Stonghold. In his experience, Diego learned surprise was a useful ally. Next, he accessed the roads, exterior, and angles for likely assaults on the base if it ever got compromised. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

While looking though, it was tough to concentrate. Praetor Null and the beyond mind numbing pain kept springing up. Pain that went beyond physical. His morphed form remained stoic, but his true form was shaking at an abnormal rate still. He had to get it under control.

OOC: I’m going to assume that since Iona is to travel above ground intermittently, she has clothing that will not make her grossly stand out from the rest of Hadron City’s poor.
Wearing a cloak and shawl made from burlap, Iona walks behind Peter and Diego with her head slightly bowed. She is concerned about the possibility of running into Stronghold patrols and drones but presses on with her present allies. Iona is keen on trying to remember the route travelled. She knows that periodically she’ll have to return to Dr. Sokolov for maintenance. The thought of having to travel it alone worries her.

As she walks, her eyes occasionally spot one of the cities’ destitute citizens. Though she feels an empathy for them, she also knows her ability to aid them is limited.

First things first, Iona. Get a med-bay establish, then you can start treating people.

As she steps around a large pile of rubble lying in the middle of the street, the three-story brick building comes into view. She turns her eyes over to Diego and Peter, “How should we proceed to secure this place?

OOC wrote:Iona, you have the type of clothes Iona would have requested prior to her departing from Dr. Sokolov's facility. Did she think to request something that made her look like a homeless person living out of a dumpster? If that is what she is wearing, don't expect to fit in where people are cleared up and have average quality clothes. Or up scale areas.

Before you ask, no, Peter is not going to be able to fabricate whatever kind of clothes he wants. He can make simple, non-detailed or elaborate things. Like sweat pants or an unlabeled t-shirt (no Nike t-shirts). It is going to be very obviously not manufactured by mundane means. There will be no stitching. The material won't look like cloth. Things like that. Bad for blending in … anywhere.

The below is for Diego's assessment, just from walking around in the Ward and eyeing up the area near the foundry. You haven't gone inside, or take a close look at the building itself yet.
Ward 3 was largely in ruins. Stop lights weren't working. Street lights were busted. There wasn't any sign of power coming from any of the buildings from what Diego could see. No lights. No active electronic devices. There were there now familiar mirrored dome cameras here and there on broken buildings. Some looked in tact. Others were cracked. Diego has no idea if any of the ones in better condition are functioning or not just by looking at them. Over head Diego can see a gray smog lingering in the air about five stories up. It is difficult to see through, to such an extent that he is unable to see the sky itself. Since entering the Ward he has not seen or heard a drone. But you haven't been here all that long yet.

The area itself looks like nightmare to engage urban warfare in for a larger force. The roads are impassable. The area s full of blind spots, cramped spaces, and tight corners. The next obvious thing Diego notices, that is pertinent for setting up a base of operation in the are: there are people here. Not as in the open or active as you would see in other areas, where people flood side walks or bloat streets with vehicles, but they are there. In the background and dispersed, but still present. You would have to be cautious about drawing attention to yourselves if you wanted to go unnoticed here. Iona has also mentioned setting up a hospital … that would without a doubt draw attention.

The foundry looks like it weathered whatever happened here well. There is a short driveway leading away from it to a rubble strewed parking lot, and along the parking lot a road. Approaching there foundry, there is plenty of cover in the form of ruble and derelict vehicles. Many of which have been stripped for parks. The foundry itself is a blocky building with nothing that that would really draw attention to it, other than it's relatively good structural integrity compared to the rest of the buildings in the area.

There are many possible approaches, by foot, for a small group to make their way to the foundry, but the road is narrow, as are the pedestrian routes. Though once the area gets cleaned of rubble the space will open up more. The building is three stories high, and from the roof should offer clear lines of sight for some distance. There are taller structures in the area, though the damage to the area has topples the majority with the highest being a ruins at an estimated height of five stories. These are few and spread out, however.

Ward 3 had been defiled from what once must have been a marvelous center of production into a wasteland. Whatever the attack was, it must have been major. Possibly a bombing run focused on the area or it had been targeted during an incursion by special ops. From his foray into the city during the war attached to a unit that he ultimately sabotaged, he knew there was covert operations in the city. This place could have been one of the targets. A bombing run made more sense to him though.

The ruin did add a nice element of safety. It wasn't too good, but just enough so they couldn't easily be overwhelmed and in smaller numbers they held the advantage especially if Hitori returned. For now though, Diegos major worry was the cameras that might still be operational and the homeless people stomped on by Stronghold. Desperate people were easy to buy. He wouldn't put it past Stronghold to offer them a scrap to give the base away if it got too obvious. This of course would displease Iona, but he didn't care.

"Secret clinic here yeah right. So many eyes around. Can't imagine why he would even mess with us about it being here.", gripes Diego hunched a little and modulating his voice to sound like the man he was impersonating with a little more rasp to it as if he had been breathing dirty air for too long. "Good place to see a lot though from that roof if we sleep here for a night. Sort of place my buddies from the war would say isn't a fighting place from the ground in big numbers. He kept complaining about having to fight in these sort of places. Never shut up about it really. Always went on about how they couldn't bring vehicles, tanks, and all those stuff in. Turns out, he ended up dying in a city like this.", says Diego making an effort to not sound too militaristic or real estate scouting like.

Looking around he mumbles to himself talking gibberish. In truth, his mind was still trying to recover, so the gibberish was mostly the sounds he screamed at a lower tone. "'I figure this place must have been bombed during the war or one of those special mission sites. Heard about those from the guys I served with. Whatever happened here, must have been big. Don't figure my unit was here for whatever happened, but the whole city must have known about it if they were here.", says Diego stopping to cough a little to sell the cover. " Stronghold hasn't even tried to keep some of the cameras working. Who knows if they even tried keeping the ones not destroyed going. You ask me, Stronghold just has too many cameras up around this city like it's a prison or something. Come here to start a new life and run into this ending up on the street again.", mumbles Diego in a normal yet still understandable.

Turning his look to Iona and Peter, Diego keeps up his ruse while hopefully conveying some orders. "I don't want to get back in those sewers right now and you two smell like cagada. Look around inside if you want to still check it out. I need to get some cagada free air around here and clear my head a little. Two of you are worse company than those people in the Undercity.", says Diego in a complaining voice while waving his hand dismissively at them.

Diego started walking away from Iona and Peter as if disgusted, intending to make his way around the building to scout it out.
Expetise Hadron City 17 -2 = 15 to either go it alone or if Peter does a roll to aid him.
Taking 10 on the deception for 20 total for acting like a homeless guy down and out on his luck.

Realized some typos upon rereading this, so edited it.

Peter had realized that with the distinct visual differences between his created clothing and mundane clothing, it was necessary to switch at Costa's base over to a normal set in order to blend in on the surface of Hadron City. This still left the issue of his own appearance not matching anything conceivably human.

In that respect he envied the advantage Diego and Hitori had in being able to consider it a trifle. He adopted the outfit of a regular hoodie, sweat pants and a baklava to cover most of his face. Trying to be careful of sight angles and keeping his head down was the best he could add. He needed a better alternative to devise. Maybe with what was left of the foundry?

If there was anything salvageable left - a sad sight for a place of great works. At least it provided an unprepossessing guise - what matter was the hidden internals they could make use of.

When Diego tried to step away, Peter briefly grabbed his arm. "Don't go too far." He whispered. Considering what had happened the last time the spy had unilaterally decided this...

Iona remains quiet. At first it is not apparent what Diego is trying to do, but after a few seconds she begins to understand. She had read background information about the now shadowy figure. He was a spy at one time. Although certain aspects of his personality had “’died” in the Ascension event, it appears that espionage and deception were still engrained within him.

As Diego begins to walk away, she extends out her hand beckoning him to stop. “But what about the inside of the building?”, she blurts out. “Don’t you want to see if it’s a safe shelter?

She pulls the burlap shawl more tightly around herself. Glancing over at Peter, she speaks in a barely audible whisper. “Should we let him question these local people and proceed inside ourselves? Would you rather wait for him?

Diego and Peter … you remember what happened here. Maybe you say it from a distance. Maybe you heard about it from someone who lived through the event. Either way, you know this was not done by artillery strike, aerial bombardment, or infiltrating commando teams with tactically placed explosives. This is where Dr. Impossible made his first attack on the city and clashed with the Praetor with authority over Hadron City's the security and military arm: Null. Dr. Impossible's assaullt on Hadron City was rebuffed after a duel that lasted only briefly and Praetor Null was not seen on the battlefield again during the war. The ruins of Ward 3 were a warning of what happened when transhuman beings battled in population centers.

By now the three of you have spent some time in Ward 3, traveling the surface. You make you visual inspections of the Ward and the area around the foundry. None of it is 'at a glance' observation. It is careful. This takes time. Peter misses it, but after a while Diego and Iona begin to notice that people are watching you. Peter, with his mask, looks like is getting ready to rob or mug someone. That get some attention. But more so, you notice eyes on Iona. Some people may follow for a short while, not obviously trailing you. They're just looking at Iona. On occasion, though it is not common, someone pulls out a camera or smartphone and they take a picture of her.
OOC wrote:Iona is superhumanly Attractive. Peter's mask hides his nature but draws weary attention. Only Diego blends in.

I'm holding off on Diego's information gathering until I get the Spycraft/Investigation roll and it is clear that he is in fact following through with that.

It was a tough lesson for Diego to forget, leaving Iona and Peter to their own devices if even for a while. He wasn't sold on the location yet and given its location plus prying eyes who were even now taking pictures he was getting less and less sold on it. Dr. Sokolov had some irony though. Safety and ability to defend wise, it was pretty good for an above ground base. If anyone other than Dr. Sokolov had recommended the place, Diego would have said it was an intentional reminder for people with enhanced abilities to play nice or people in mass die. Stronghold dying in mass, Diego didn't mind. Innocents in mass dying because of stupidity, Diego did mind as there was no point in saving the world only to kill everyone in it while doing it.

As the phones came out and people stared, Diego mumbled incoherently to himself again coughing once or twice. Peter was about as subtle as a thief walking up to a bank and Iona clearly had some physical beauty to her. Both staying out in the open for too long was stupid. His training told him to blend and get the pulse of the area. Praetor Null's punishment he still had flashes of kept him from indulging that instinct for now.
As Diego begins to walk away, she extends out her hand beckoning him to stop. “But what about the inside of the building?”, she blurts out. “Don’t you want to see if it’s a safe shelter?”
Growling a bit at Iona in his raspy tone, he grumpily looks at her. "Safe? With you two pendejos? One you messed up your face so bad you need to wear a mask or you'll scare people. The oher just can't learn to cover up enough. You're lucky i even agreed to go along with you. Stupid...", begins Diego as he mumbles incoherently again trailing off with his voice. "Fine, lets just get in there. Sooner I am rid of you two the better. Find a place where I don't need to be a babysitter to some pendejos.", gripes Diego.
Edited out the asking around for now.

With Diego grumbling and griping long a crotchety old man, and both Iona and Peter urging the spy to keep the group from splitting up in unfamiliar territory, the three settle on a course of action: investigate the foundry itself. No one interrupts your progress. Most street folk have the good sense to keep to themselves. Occasionally you can feel eyes on you though. Up close the foundry looks blocky and simple. No flash or flare. Just sturdy construction meant to last. There is superficial damage on the walls and the double steel doors at the front of the building look like some great force nearly knocked them off of their hinges. For you, this means there is no lock to deal with. Not that any one of you didn't have the means to deal with such barriers.

Inside the foundry is just as anti-decoration as the outside. There is no front office. When you walk inside, it is right into the foundry floor. There is no lighting, other than daylight spilling in from broken windows positions near the ceiling of the walls. What is present on the foundry floor is a build of old-world simplicity or organization and modern forges, conveyor belts, and automated systems including mechanical arms to take over the task of lifting and moving heavy objects. All of it is damaged, and looks like people tried to break off useful salvage wherever possible. It smelled like feces in the foundry as well. For Peter, there was almost a sense of the place having been abused, raped, or defiled.

Once inside the foundry, Iona continues to try and conceal her visage as much as possible. This area requires a lot of work. The construction of a base would go faster if we could vet some of the locals to aid us. It would be nice to have some trustworthy help in a sick bay once it’s established.

OOC: I’m assuming that there are broken windows (or maybe even some collapsed sections of the ceiling or walls that allow light to enter. Even if that is not the case, she has Infravision to see heat patterns and Ultravision if she is in a low-light situation. She cannot, however, see in total darkness.

She stays near to Diego and Peter for her own protection. Despite her own durability and destructive capabilities, Hadron City is full of dangers. She then speaks up just loud enough for both Ascendants to hear her. “Do you think we should leave this ground-level area as it is? Perhaps look for a basement and sublevels to begin our work? It might allow us to conceal our efforts for awhile. I suspect that our base could eventually be discovered, but if we have fortified the lower areas and recruited a large enough body of defenders, then perhaps we could hold it…and if not hold it then hold it at least long enough to escape.

Diego walked in behind the group as if testily hurrying them along grumbling loudly. He even made pushing motions with his hands as if he could mentally push them along somehow. "We don't have all day and I want to see if I can get a good spot for the night.", says Diego in a thick Spanish accent aged just right. If the others weren't going to bother with a cover, he could at least keep his. No use coming up with them if they weren't used to sell a ruse for himself at at least. Plus, it might give him credibility with the homeless outside eventually.

Once inside, the ruin would have made him sad in a previous life. The young, impressionable youth who wanted to bring about utopia would have saw the ruins as part of a crumbled dream when Imperator vanished. A more seasoned agent, after being groomed, would have been disheartened yet want to fight on. Now, something new, something better, something evolved all he saw was opportunity. A strong structure obviously in disuse made the perfect mirage for a proper base under the ground. In fact, the homeless might even prove to be an asset unwittingly. Stronghold could investigate and everyone above could attest to the group moving on. If they press the investigation and the top level remained ruined with an entrance to the basement covered it would only back up the story.

All of this depended on Peter and Iona not spoiling the ruse anymore than they had. "I don't know if this place is stable enough to not fall and it smells like mierda. So don't talk too loud or you might make it fall on us.", continues Diego with his grumbling not too loud, but loud enough to be heard if anyone was so inclined.

Lowering his voice and putting up his head to look around, he makes his next more precise remarks. "The locals would likely sell us out for beer. We cannot trust any of them. Stronghold has conditioned them to see a scrap of bread or drop of wine as riches all in the name of modernity. The presence of you two alone likely ended up on a couple phones with Ionas image sent out already by a drunk. After getting set up, you two will need better covers.", begins Diego reverting back to his new matter of fact speech patterns devoid of comfort.

"Peter is correct on all counts. We should start below, but not before making a show of surveying this level. Once we find the route to the sub levels, we may yet find a secret way in and out. Sokolov is the kind to leave out useful information like that to spite Praetor Null indirectly. Join me if you so like, but I am going to do a quick search of the above ground. There may be more seeking shelter in here or worse.", says Diego quietly while looking about.

Starting to walk, he looks back at the others. "Coming estupidos? We don't have all day/", says Diego returning to his adopted character. As he looks around, he keeps an eye out for anyone else who might be in the forge or who had setup camp on top of looking fo the entrance to the lower levels.

While looking, he still had flashes of the pain that seemed to go on forever at the hands of Praetor Null. It only served as a reminder he felt inclined to pass on to Peter over the Ascendent network. We have been commanded to work with Sokolov and his minion. Remember to not give away our secrets. She may yet try to collect samples from us once the base is established., transmits Diego.
Perception 17 I forgot to add the -2 in the roll.
