A flash of light crosses her vision and her eyes instinctively glance in the direction from whence it came. One of her primary missions is to disable any camera which can record their deeds. And so she casually walks to a position which places her within range of them all. With her black sunglasses and hood pulled up over her head, Iona attempts to conceal as much of her facial features as possible.
OOC: Now that I can see where the cameras are located, can she tell how many are able to view the area where the theft is to take place? She can only disable one at a time in a given round, so when she sees the truck coming down the street she needs to start early.

Reassigned and brief by Ascendant Chen, John is given directions to Ward 3. The Ward is a devastated ruin with only a couple buildings standing. There are signs that suggest this was once a manufacturing industrial center for the city, now dated since the construction of the Forge complex.

The roads are clogged with wreckage and rubble that the recovery work that has begun elsewhere in the city has yet to touch. Dangerous lopsided or crumbling structures are common. Impressive holes, gutting some buildings, are regular sights as well. It looks like this Ward may have took it harder that the rest … or some singularly disastrously event. People in ragged, worn, and dirty clothes are move about the rubble strew streets, but mostly keep out of the open. As if trying not to present themselves as targets. There are no Stronghold vehicles in the area.

Above, it looks like someone punched a hole in the sky and filled the hole in with dull gray clouds. That patch of sky above ward three was hazy, and the edges of sky around the clouds seemed to ben upwards, stretching unnaturally. There was a deep, unnerving, sense of wrongness about it. The people he saw on the streets were ragged and tired looking. No one looked at the sky.

The base you were given directions to leads John to a three story bricked building with small broken windows near the top of the structure, rather than at the ground floor. There are fist size holes in the walls, that you can see from a distance. Even with that structural damage it is in better condition than any other structure in the area.

He doesn't go directly there, however, as John was advised to use a concealed entrance located a block away. Entering a some storm drain tunnels he follows the graffiti ridden tunnel until he finds the right piece of graffiti, one denoting the entrance to the base: a lidless eyes surrounded by fire. Pushing on the eye a section of the wall gives under the pressure he applies, and moved down, then slides to the side. Stepping inside, it closes behind him.

Finding himself in a dark, winding hallway, John follows it to a security door with electronic alpha numeric touchpad and biometric scanner. He types in the code he was given. Places his hand to the scanner. There is is a hum and a clank as electromagnetic locks disengage long enough for him to open the door and enter. Immediately inside is a security check point with a single guard, armed with a small caliber sidearm.
OOC wrote:After John get's checked in by the guard, what would John do? Bear in mind, this will be a short scene, and after Diego and Iona finish up with their meeting with Dr. Applegate, John's scene will merge into their's as they are informed of his arrival.

OOC: I'm not sure where my equipment is stored at the present time. I'll assume that John travels about this area in his worn, urban camo and carries a concealed pistol with a detached suppressor. He also has his combat knife with him. I'm also assuming that the guard is also not a trained soldier, so their will probably be no exchange of military etiquette.
John steps through the door only after eyeing the guard and surrounding room. There is a caution in his movements, not quite paranoia but a mild distrust that permeates all he does. Living and fighting out in the ruins of Hadron City has made him more accustomed to rubble than touch pads, biometric scanners, and electromagnetic locks.

He moves into the room slowly, as if half-expecting to be jumped by a group of thugs.

Without waiting to be asked, he shits his gaze to the security guard and speaks matter-of-factly. "I'm Master Gunner John Steiner. I've been directed here under the orders of Ascendant Chen. I'm to meet with Ascendant Gonzalez. He should be expecting me."
OOC: Here's his Insight Roll: Supernaturalist: 1D20 → 8(8). So, an 8. I'm not sure that'll get it.

The guard stationed inside the entrance to the subterranean base is a man, a little under six feet tall. He's athletic and fit. Dark haired and brown eyes. When John enters the guard visually inspects him, then as John introduces himself the guard takes a tablet out from behind a sturdy metal desk, that looks like it could double as cover in a firefight. Poking and swiping at the screen for a minute he eventually nods and sets the tablet down.

"I have you listed on the admittance list Mr. Steiner. Just a moment, I'll arrange an escort for you."

At that the man picks up what looks like landline phone and makes a call. As he does John takes the time to size up the guard. He's dressed in plain clothes. Not military garb. His manner is courteous and professional. Though anyone who doesn't respect authority in Null's organization doesn't last long. The man isn't relaxed, but nor is he stiff and ridged. He's alert, but perhaps not as paranoid as John. The guard is only lightly armed but that could mean he has a secondary weapon under the desk. There are too many conflicting signals and tactical considerations running through Johns head leaving him uncertain whether the man in front of him is a trained civilian or someone with military training and experience.

After a minute the guard sets the phone down and turns his attention to John.

"Ascendant Gonzalez is in a meeting at the moment. I've been informed that quarters have been set side for you. Your escort can take you to them."

Then, unless John wished to engage with the guard, a couple minutes passed before the interior door to the base opens. In the doorways stands a young African-American woman with a skin tone leaning towards caramel. She has short cut brown hair and big brown eyes. She wears black jeans and a long sleeve burgundy turtle neck shirt. The guard, noting her arrival, immediately greets the woman with a salute.

"Ma'am."

The woman returns to the guard's salute before focusing her attention on John. Extending an arm she offers to shake hands with him.

"Mr. Steiner, I am Corporal Tilly Sander."

She waits for the handshake to conclude before motioning to the guard stationed behind his fortified best.

"Please hand your weapons and communications devices over. Only internal communications are allowed on base. Your weapons will be stored and tagged in the armory. You may retrieve them when you leave."

When the attractive, well-dressed black woman and the guard salute one another, there is a brief almost imperceptible expression of confusion on John’s face. Nice lookin’ woman. I wonder what her story is. More importantly...is she single?

When she extends her hand to shake, John reciprocates. “Corporal Sander,” He says in acknowledgment. “I’m John Steiner. I’m here to meet with Ascendant Gonzalez."
"Please hand your weapons and communications devices over. Only internal communications are allowed on base. Your weapons will be stored and tagged in the armory. You may retrieve them when you leave."
When the Corporal instructs him to turn these items over, John instinctively pauses. He looks to the Corporal’s face and then to the guard with a barely hidden look of suspicion. Slowly, he produces his pistol and suppressor and lays them upon the table.

Even more slowly he produces his combat knife and extends his hand to drop it on the table. For what seems an eternity, he stands with his hand on the knife. And just before the situation gets even more awkward, he reluctantly removes his hand from it.

Is it necessary to completely disarm me, Corporal?” There is a tinge of paranoia in his voice belying the fact that he has spent too much time in dangerous situations.
OOC: Ok, here’s my Expertise: Soldier roll: Supernaturalist: 1D20+12 → 24(12 + 12). Ok, a 24

The exchange between the guard and the Corporal is unusual. People aren't required to, and generally don't, salute NCOs. Which a Corporal is. Then there is that fact neither of them is in uniform, if the guard is indeed a soldier. The lack of uniform itself is understandable though, given the under ground nature of how Null's people have to operate. It does make distinguishing rank, and enforcing etiquette more difficult. People here must know one another, or know Corporal Sander and see her standing above her official rank. Which isn't out of the question, as John is aware that the majority of the higher ranks of Imperator's forces were killed, captured, or deserted after the war. Dr. Sokolov, a Praetor at the time, had been captured and two others went rogue. In the wake of the war Colonel Silvia Costa was the highest ranking officer, and now she is among the Ascendants.
OOC wrote:You had the opportunity to make a check because of John's background, and the fact he's been working under Zachary for an extended period of time. The above is what you get as a result of the roll.

While the guard looks at John expectantly when he hands over his weapons, and quickly retrieves them then they are set down, the Corporal has a more patient disposition. At hearing the mercenary's query about disarming him Sander's full, rich burgundy painted lips, curve into a reassuring smile.

"You aren't in enemy territory. For now your weapons will remain in the armory. During your meeting, you may request permission from from Ascendant Gonzalez to carry these on the base."

At that Tilly takes a step back, turns to the side such that she is no longer blocking entry to the base' interior, and lifts her left hand to gesture into the hallway beyond. Inviting John inside with that motion of her hand.

"If you come with me, I'll show you to your quarters."

It wasn't Corporal Sander, the guard, or any of the other armed personnel that made John nervous. He had been soldiering for Praetor Null for some time now. What if the base were attacked suddenly and John was separated from his weapons? Was he just being paranoid? Perhaps. But history is full of examples of soldiers with their guards down when bombs start falling, bullets start flying, or torpedoes slam into the hulls of their ships. In his mind there was only one remedy...never be unarmed. And though it is mentally taxing, one should always be as vigilant as the Devil himself.

John really disliked the idea of handing over his weapons, but he knew better than to press Corporal Sander on this issue. When she offers to take him to his quarters, then to see his commander, he is quick to offer an alternative.

"Corporal...", he said just before Sander turns to lead him. "...might I see Ascendant Gonzalez first. I'll wait if I have to do so. I'd like to get permission to bring my equipment in asap."
OOC: I'll take you up on your offer not to RP the transfer of my equipment into the base. That will speed things along.

When Steiner doesn't follow after her, and voices a disinterest in being shown his quarters, Tilly stops. She hadn't taken much more than a step anyway. Taking a step back with one foot she half turns, so that only her right side of her body faces John, though she does turn her had to look directly at him.

"If you do not want to see your quarters and rather wait in a conference room, I'll take you to one. But if you want to store your gear in your room, not the armory, you'll want to know where your room is first. Right? Either way, the Ascendant is not going to hold a meeting with you here, at a guard post."

Reluctantly, John slowly moves forward, staring at his pistol and knife on the table as he follows Sander down the hallway.

As he walks behind the corporal, his battle-hardened mind analyzes the passageway for cover: every door, alcove, custodial closet, and bathroom. He is used to evaluating the tactical worth of terrain both for cover and for attack. I wonder what sort of defenses this place has.

After a minute or so, John stops scanning his environment and focuses on the young woman leading him down the hall. "So, what's your story? How did you get into soldiering?"
OOC: Is there anything John can deduce about the defensibility of the base after a period of walking around? It's really only worth it if he can offer some needed counsel to Diego. Part of his duties here are offer advice.
Here is John's Expertise: Soldier roll to evaluate the defensive qualities of the base that he has seen so far. Supernaturalist: 1D20+12 → 22(10 + 12). So, a total of 22.

John doesn't see much of the base on his trek. This isn't a guided tour. Tilly said she'd show him to his quarters and then a conference room for his meeting. So John does not get to experience increases in levels of security, if there are any on the base. The area he is presently in is dedicated to personnel, and the needs of people interacting with one another. There are some conference rooms, a barracks, cafeteria, storage rooms, and other non critical things that one wouldn't mind having at the front of base where you might receive guests, or take the initial brunt of an assault.

During his walk John noticed a mix of armed and unarmed personnel on the base. Those who carry weapons are only bearing small caliber sidearms and when the approach the Corporal they salute her. It is always someone else who salutes Tilly, then she responds. The practice of a subordinates acknowledging a superior.

"I enlisted after graduation. It was the right thing to do. As for my story, if you stick around long enough I might tell you some day."

As they progress through the building John is able to just barely notice signs of well concealed surveillance. Mostly cameras, but there are motion sensors, infrared, even audio and a few things the he does not recognize, but fit the angle and positioning of services of some kind. He is also able to see some seals in walls and the ceiling that appear to be hidden hatches. There is no visible means of opening them, but if he thinks about it, they're positioned to have the best lines of fire in their area. Down hallways to deeper regions of the base John also notices some reinforces sections of hall that look to emergency vertical drop blast doors.

The more time he spends in the front of the base, the more John gest the feeling this was not originally built as a military base. There are dead ends that people could get trapped in and choke points that could be exploited either by attacker or defender. It feels like people were meant to live here in relative comfort underground, not fight here. The corridors were not laid out for setting up ideal lines of fire, and lacked defensible angled wall outcroppings that could be used as cover by defenders.

"What is it that you do for Ascendant Chen?"

... the mild tones of Corporal Sander's voice sound out amidst Johns inspection of the base. Given that John had little interest in seeing his quarters, Tilly only takes him on a walk by of the room in the barracks that had been set aside for him. Room thirteen. From there she leads him to a no frills conference room with a long rectangle table and simple chairs arrayed around it. Pausing at the door he motions inside with her right hand.

"You may wait here. Ascendant Gonzalez will be informed of your arrival after his present meeting."

Monday 23th, March 2019 - Return of the First Born

Carter spent his nineteenth birthday being tortured. For almost four months Carter had been a prisoner in some nameless hell. A place where people went to be forgotten by the world. There tortures were inflicted upon him. His body torn and his mind pulled apart by curious scientists trying to figure out what Imperator had done to the children born under his reign to make them different. A month ago the prison was assaulted. One of his saviors was a twelve year old girl with freckles and blonde pigtails. She wore a flak jacket and carried a sword and submachinegun. The girl should have been playing video games and gossiping about cute boys with her friends. Not conducting commando raids on illegal black sites. Before Carter could thank her, the back of her head exploded as a high velocity metal slug blasted through her. Not many of her compatriots survived, and both rescuers and escaping prisoners made a hasty retreat that Carter got lost in.

Carter climbed his way out of one hell and into another. The place he had been held was located somewhere in the Under City. It wasn't the budding underground metropolis Imperator's people were steadily building. Not any more. It had turned into a lightless maze of collapsed tunnels and unstable architecture. There were toxic smells in some areas. Poisonous. There were bodies that showed signs of radiation poisoning in other areas. The damage done by the war had wounded this place deeply. Many areas were unsafe and there was no warning. Then there was the human element. Tunnels that appeared safe were littered with traps and stalked by cannibalistic gangs of murderers. Madness reigned in the Under City.

There were communities still in the Under City though. Downtrodden and destitute, but they were surviving. People from one such group pointed Carter to the hospital where he found Dr. Sokolov operating out of. No longer 'Praetor' Sokolov. The past week Carter had spent recovering from his ordeal and beginning the process of acclimating to the state of affairs in the world. Imperator was gone, presumed dead. The war had been lost. Hadron City was a battered and beaten city, now occupied by a mercenary force. There was some kind of disease in the wider world, that turned people into monsters. It felt like everything was on a downward spiral the day Imperator disappeared. As though he had somehow been holding the world, everything, together.

Now Carter stood in a laboratory out of a science fiction story. It was like a glimpse into a distant future. Everything was clean and smooth with rounded edges. Nothing had visible moving parts. Tables had holographic screens and interfaces on them in place of physical computers.

Seated atop one such table, with her legs dangling over the edge, was an Asian teenage girl. Her feet were adorned in scuffed up and well worn combat boots. Demin jeans with nicks and tears covered her lower body. Over her flat chest was a black t-shirt with 'Nerf This!' printed in pink italic font, and a cut up and battered black leather jacket was worn over it. She had high, sharp, cheek bones, and angular eyes, but the rest of her facial features were rounded, though the edges were accented with make up. His lips were painted black and there was some heavy black liner around her eyes. The girl's black hair had pale blue highlights, it was cut shot and had jagged uneven edges to it. Her lips were curved downward into a frown and she had an angry look about her.

Dr. Sokolov was there as well. Standing at the center of the room, with his hand weaving through air as though conducting an orchestral performance. He was working at some task in augmented reality. AR, a digital world of interactivity overlaid atop the physical, had been common place in Hadron City before the war. Now it was largely inaccessible. The former Praetor, despite his accomplishments and abilities, looked rather unassuming. He looked very much the average Caucasian male. Moderate height and weight. Middle aged. Brown hair. He wore a pair of black horn rimmed glasses. Behind which were steely grey eyes that had an intensity them that could make a person question the otherwise mundane appearance of the man. Gray slacks, a white button down shirt, and a white lab coat were the dominate features of his attire.

This was the second meeting Carter had with Dr. Sokolov since arriving. The first was the day he arrived. The doctor had been working then as well. Today Carter had been given a packet with his new, falsified, identification which would allow him to move about the city without undue scrutiny, so long as he did not draw attention to himself. The packet also had keys to a storage locker in the city that held his vehicles. It was paid for until the end of the month. While Carter sorted through these things Dr. Sokolov was speaking. He had just finished briefing the young man on the operation in Ward 3 being lead by Diego Gonzalez and Iona, and expressed his desire that Carter lend his aid to them.

"I need someone to look out for Iona. She's brilliant, but my creation is only a month old, and I did not have time to groom her properly before she was needed outside the lab. She has started to refuse my orders and has become prone to ... excessive empathy. Which has compromised her judgement."

Dr. Sokolov spoke of this 'excessive empathy' with a note of distaste in his voice. Though he worked as some invisible task while speaking, he did not sound distracted or unfocused.

"Separately, I have taken measures to guide the group towards an old project of mine which I would like to retain sole ownership of: Viridi Mater, an algae meant to provide an abundance of food. When they learn of it, encourage them to pursue it's recovery. If you are able to convince them of the merit of delivering it to me, or should they fail to retrieve it and the biotechnology find it's way into my care without their knowing, I will be appreciative. "
OOC wrote:In our PM discussion I said the oldest First Generation would be 18, that is incorrect. I forgot we had advanced to 2019 in game. So he'd be 19.

During the briefing you can assume that Carter is up to date on the basics of the PC's operation and who they are. Though details (such as the abilities and backgrounds) would not be covered. Diego is an Ascendant, a transhuman being, and Iona is an android. John wouldn't be covered as he has only been around for one day at this point. Base and mission details wouldn't be covered.

Dr. Sokolov is also giving Carter an optional mission: deliver the Viridi Mater to him. If John manages to do so, he and Iona (collectively) will gain 1 Favor with Dr. Sokolov.

OOC: i'm taking some narrative liberties here, as i assume Imperator would've placed all the First Generation into a "Group Home" so as to foster a stronger sense of community(and to work on 'em easier! ;) ) and Carter, being one of the eldest, would've felt it the most keenly...
Growing up with the other first generation's, Carter had keenly felt his responsibility to help lead his Kadre when needed, but not like this.
Never like this.
The City under lock&key, falling apart at the seams without Imperator here to guide them.Happy Hell, he was only 19! He should be thinking of College and his future job, not trying to help lead a group of people younger than him...
Taking a deep breath to center himself, Howell say's to Sokolov,
"Don't worry Doc, i'll keep a eye on her and straighten her out for ya.I'll also get you that Algea you want while i'm out.."

Noticing the Goth sitting on the table like she owned it, Carter gave her a charming smile as he said
"Well, don't think we've met yet. I'm Carter, though when i'm driving or working i perfer Snapdragon. And you are?..."

While Dr. Sokolov had been briefing Carter, the young woman who had yet to be introduced to him was aggressively poking at a holographic screen beside her that refused to respond to whatever command she had been trying to deliver. If it had been a piece of physical machinery, she probably would have broken it. Sensing attention move towards her, she lowered her hand and looked up. Brown eyes settled on Carter and narrowed suspiciously when she changed his tone and demeanor to be extra charming.

"Ren."

Only her name was offered. No excess dialog. It was a very simple and direct introduction. The Asian youth's voice had a Midwestern accent typical of people having grown up in Kansas.

Dr. Sokolov, who had been ignoring the girl's idle attempt to keep herself occupied with the unresponsive holographic interface, watched the exchange between Carter and Ren. When it became apparent that Ren wasn't going to say anymore, he spoke up as he returned to looking off into the middle distance.

"I have asked Ren to escort you to the surface. It is unsafe to travel the Under City, especially alone, and she knows the routes well."
OOC wrote:What is your goal with the Persuasion check? Is he trying to make a good first impression? Is Carter trying to seduce Ren (that will be harder)? Dr. Sokolov wave a have, gesturing in a 'go ahead' or 'you're dismissed' fashion, without saying another word. Which ever the meaning, you were ready to leave, and he wanted you to go.

Ren, for her part, hops off of the table. Her boots thumping over the floor as he stalks out of the room with all the angst of a teenager who had a grudge against the world. After departing the from room you find yourselves in a hallway of white walls leading down a corridor towards a set of elevators. Which Ren leads the way towards.

When Carter inquires into how the other First Generation are fairing, he gets a look from Ren that might as well have asked 'Are you kidding?'. A handful of seconds later came the verbal response.

"Bad. Where you been?"
