JD

JD was caught off-guard by how quickly the battle was called to a halt. He'd had a multi-stage plan that seemed cool in his head but who knows if it would've worked. He considered the massive stone dome around him. He'd concentrated on making it as thick as possible and he saw the massive troll try to lift it without success. With a little apprehension he braced a hand on the ceiling of the small enclosure that held him. It was claustrophobic compared to the total size of the dome as there was a massive thickness to the construct. Experimentally, JD pushed.

Nothing happened a moment. After seeing the huge stony creature of myth not succeed, JD wasn't surprised, but JD wasn't no quitter. He PUSHED. The stone of his armor expanded like the rising of a new volcanic island out of the waves. The stone dome shifted with a creak off the gym floor. The mats crushed flat hissed with an intake of air like the first gasp of a dying man with empty lungs. It rose to the extension of JD's arms then continued to rise, the stone shell of his armor extending. The dome hit the ceiling before JD reached the end of the extension he was capable of. He took a slow step and the dome wobbled but stabilized quickly. "Could.... someone get the big double doors? I'll walk this... outside." he says through grunts of effort, each step a groan on the reinforced gym floors. JD glanced down and noticed the stone of his boots expanding on each step to spread out the weight over a bigger surface area, then contract again when he lifted his foot only to repeat on the next step.

He walked it to an unused area of bare, hard-packed dirt before settling it down. Even so, the dome sank a foot or more into the earth plunging JD once more into a darkness that didn't bother him. Rather than try to make a hole in the dome, JD sank down into the earth to come up 20 ft from the dome like a porpoise breaching water, earth clods raining down around him, the tunnel behind him sealing and collapsing.

He looks to the disturbed dirt. "Yeah, my powers are Messy."

He makes sure to move the 'anvil' to the dropped items from the strength test - a far easier task than moving the massive dome. (Though JD did marvel at his determination that moving a 9 ton block of stone was 'easier' than anything.)

Later he would catch up to Vil. "Uh... sorry if that wasn't a good showcase of abilities, I just wasn't looking forward to taking a punch from you. Maybe we can spar some other time though I think you'll end up the better in a sustained fight. Not to be all stereotyping, but aren't you guys famous for regenerating?" JD tries to sound jovial.

"Anyway, good luck on the next tests."

JD, unarmored, will settle in a nearby seat for the next tests.

AJ Sullivan
HP: !; LP: 1; Condition: Normal

After her match with Maya, AJ had retreated to one corner of the room to shake off the lingering discomfort (and to dry off with a towel). By the time she was feeling ready for more it was time for the next test. She picked a desk off to one side of the formation and sat down, her face creased with just a bit of worry, as if an academic test was as dangerous as a hurtling piston or a superhuman attack.

She knew she was smart, but who could tell what kind of questions they were going to be asked? She settled for fidgeting with one of the pens, trying to resist the urge to draw on the blank paper...

There's a few gasps of surprise as JD raises the dome above his head, and the TA moves towards a large set of double doors to help remove the dome. The doors open out onto the tarmac outside the building, allowing JD to deposit the stone out of the way. As he comes back inside, he would see the TA give him a nod and a slight smile. "Good work kid" he would say in a quiet voice. Closing the doors behind them Mr Pemberly moves into the centre of the room.

"Well, really you should have been using your powers for the other test miss Dimple, and for a school that focuses on the use of what your kids call 'superpowers', this is pretty normal." Mr Pemberly raises an eyebrow a little as he speaks, looking up from the ever present clipboard.

Vil unfortunately has a difficult time finding a chair that will fit his sizeable frame. Unfortunately it does not seem that the woman took into account the different sizes of the various students. Joseph would seem to have similar trouble to Vil in finding a place to sit.

As the other students begin to takes their seats, Mr Pemberly steps forwards to address the students. "Alright, in front of you, there should be a test paper. I know that you haven't revised for a test today, but don't worry, this isn't that kind of test. This will be measuring intelligence, aptitude, problem solving and so forth. Think of it like the wonderlic that SFL players take. You'll have an hour to take the test, if you have any questions please ask them now".

"Well, Mr Pemberly, it would have been useful to tell us in advance that there would be group power testing the first day along will the other information packages we were given." Sarah says. "What is normal to you is completely unknown and new to us. Having done this before, you should be aware of that."

JD watched Vil and Joseph struggle and frowned two large-sized desk replicas of hard stone formed in the back. He motioned the two students to them if they wanted. Truth be told, that was probably going to be the most useful thing he'd be doing in the next hour.

He turns over his paper and takes out a pencil.

Seeing the new chairs form, Joseph would glance behind him and then back to JD. He would respond with an awkward smile, but would shake his head as he squeezes into the small gap between the chair and the desk. He didn't look particularly comfortable, be he seemed determined to stick it out.

In response to Sarah's words, she would see Mr Pemberly take a moment to rub his eyes. "Just s-, I recommend that you focus on the upcoming test. Alright everyone, your time begins, now".

JD acknowledges Joseph's choice with a thumbs up and a half shrug and turns his concentration to the test.

Vil takes one long step towards the new stone desk in the back before he sees what Joseph is doing. He hesitates. He's not sure exactly why Joseph isn't taking the desk in the back, but ... maybe doing so would mark himself as an outsider? He's got enough social senses to think of that.

He follows Joseph and squeezes uncomfortably into a small seat, trying not to look toward A.J. in the process. He stands up again, thinking about whether it would be better to just sit on the desk instead of at it ... but worries that he'll get in trouble if he occupies two desks by himself (one sat on, one to take the test on). So he squeezes awkwardly back into a seat.

Once taking the test, his nerves don't get any better, even though it's material that he can actually grasp ...

AJ Sullivan
HP: 1; LP: 0; Condition: Normal

As soon as they were told to start, AJ flipped her paper over and got to work. As she usually did on standardized tests, she just read through all the questions quickly, not marking anything at first. Once she had gone through it, then she started ticking off answers one after another. She was done well before the time limit, turning her paper over and setting down her pen.

Then she closed her eyes and took a deep breath. In her mind, she reviewed the test, thinking through any of the questions that had seemed more difficult. After a few minutes, she opened her eyes again and picked her pen back up, checking her answers again- just in case.

-Also, AJ has Expertise-Student- if that can be used to substitute for Insight (depending on what, exactly, that is trying to measure), this would make her roll 3 points higher (expertise +5 vs. Insight +2)

Maya McKinny (Lifestream / HP: 1)

A written test. Lovely. Maya groans as she finds a seat and waits for the signal to go. Flipping her test over, she goes through the questions, answering the ones she knows first as she goes through, then goes back to the beginning to put more thought into the ones she didn't get immediately. By the end, she was feeling pretty confident, even if a fair number of her answers would honestly be based more on luck than conscious conclusions.

Sarah flips the paper over but she is still fuming from the earlier testing. When she is done, a coating of red clay dust is all over the test. When she notices, she smiles about it.

The test before the students is an odd mixture when examined. The first half is a variety of question styles, from multiple choice to short written answers to maths questions. All of them follow the theme of 'hero business' (as you might hope in a school like this), and many reference famous heroes from around the country. These questions are almost all logic puzzles or problem solving tests where common sense outweighs actual experience. A lot of the students seem to struggle with these questions, though a few seem to fly through them. Lucy, Alicia and even Joseph seem to be quite happy with the test as they work their way through.

The second half is dominated primarily by essay questions which outline scenarios where the writer is a hero in the middle of action. These questions are focused more on situational assessment and judgement calls instead of logic. Questions include choosing whether to save civilians or battle the villains, how to deal with the press after a failed mission and even dealing with their own sidekick. Time seems to fly quickly as the students focus on their work, and before too long there is the call for pencils to be placed town and the tests turned over.

JD was slow and methodical with each question, plodding his way through like an ox pulling a plow all day long, unrushed and unhurried. It's the same with the logic part as it is the judgement questions. He doesn't finish first by any stretch but neither is he rushing through the last to finish up in time. Even when done he flips back to reread a few, checking to make sure there is a completeness and finality before Time is called.

Vil Grumych Granit

The second half of the test is much easier for Vil than the first. Like, surprisingly so. He'd expect to have more trouble with the more academic questions, but in this case, the answers to the second half flow from him by instinct, without even having to think about them. The hardest part is just the manipulation of tiny little standardized pencils. He pauses to consider whether he should be having a harder time with these questions, but shrugs and thinks how Mama tells him he has a good heart.

After flying through the second half, he has time remaining ... so he spends a few minutes trying to convince himself to go back over the first half questions again. He knows he didn't do great on that part, although it remains to be seen whether he did so-so or completely bombed. Eventually he manages to flip his paper back to that part of the test and starts reading the questions and his answers again ... but gets more and more nervous, until he just closes his eyes tight shut and leaves them that way until time is called.

After papers and pencils are collected, he turns to where he knew John had been sitting. "Hey, John," he says. "How'd you do?" His eyes are still scrunched closed.
