Lindy sighed. So they were stuck with these new abilities. What now? If they used any of their obvious abilities, some secret government organization might, no, would come after them. The public would be split with some welcoming them and others fearing them. Lindy figured she could try to hide what she could do now. It would take some effort not to slip up. Especially with the not hungry bit.

"So someone or something attacked Earth and you either can't or won't tell us who or why. What if it happens again? We came here for answers due to your invitation and we haven't gotten many. We're freaks now! Can you even begin to comprehend what's happened to us? Even if we decide to try to live a normal life, we'll have to be careful not to reveal our abilities. What if Lloyd sees someone trapped under a heavy object and rushes to their aid without thinking? What if Kara is struck by lightning or grabs a high voltage wire and survives? What if I fall off a cliff or building while working and don't fall? Some of us have families! How do we hide these...abilities from them?" Lindy rants barely keeping her anger in check.

Kara

"Take it easy, Lindy," she said putting a hand on Lindy's hand. "Paranoia is good when it makes you cautious and alert. It' s bad when it makes you anxious and panicky."

She turned back to the man, "The nature of the attack is irrelevant to us? How many people died? If it's more than one, then it is relevant to all people, everywhere. Lots of people want to know why they lost their loved ones. To know that it someone is related to me, to us, makes it personal. You don't get to decide what others think is relevant. How do you sleep knowing these answers and not telling those who NEED to know."

The man frowns a bit at Lindy's outburst but doesn't interrupt. "Perhaps if I frame this another way you will understand... The attack was not on Earth or humanity itself. Outraged as I can understand you and many others would be were they to learn of this, you must understand there is nothing to you can do about it."

He gestures vaguely indicating outside the building. "Should this occur again in the future, then it will happen and you will have no agency in preventing it, but you will at least perhaps be present to help any who then find themselves with abilities. Simply put, what happens was not a natural occurrence that you may predict or take preventative measures. You may simply deal with the aftermath. Considering how you might take vengeance, however, would be much like trying to take revenge on the sky for causing a river to flood and take life."

Looking back at Lindy, he narrows his eyes slightly. "You appear to be struggling under a particular concept I thought I had established. The choice is yours. I am here to give what information and understanding I can, not to guide you or give advice that might influence your choices."

His visage softens somewhat, looking between the four of you. "The four of you are linked by this experience. You may stick together for support, or you may separate. And I believe, for my final words to leave you with, for what it is worth, you are not freaks. You might think of it as having obtained a talent unique to yourselves."

There were still things he wanted to ask, to press upon, but he knew that he'd receive nothing but continued frustration in the end. Instead, he tapped his fingers together once again in contemplation. "Even the sky can be burned, if one dedicated themselves to it." He even had a few ideas on how it could be done.

"I'm going to continue studying this event on my own time, even if you tell me it's fruitless. Nothing's impossible, we found that out just a few days ago, didn't we?" His weary sigh lessened the effect of his bold deceleration.

Lloyd could not help but feel like this was a dream. Whether it was a good dream or a bad one was yet to be determined. He had a hunch it would end up being a nightmare for him.

"I guess I'm gonna have to find a way to tell my family and friends", he says to no one in particular. He looks around at each person at the table. It's clear he's looking for advice as his face conveys unease. "So, how are you guys gonna break the news to your relations?"

Though Lloyd's mind focused on breaking the news, he still could not help but wonder at the nature of this man and the tidings he brought. Were these powers bestowed by aliens? Beings of a supernatural nature? and the burning question: "Why?" It still lingered.

Break the news to our relations? Is he insane? thought Lindy.

"I'm not sure that's a good idea. We don't know who or what caused this. Wouldn't telling our family or friends put them in danger? My ex would either blackmail me or try to exploit me somehow. My parents? Probably have a heart attack. My daughter? No idea. She may find the idea of her mother having superpowers is, what's that word they use....oh yes, lit."

"So you really have nothing else to tell us?" Kara asks. "Something mysterious and wonderful..." she looks at Lindy "... or terrifying happens to us and you decide it is important to tell us it's a mystery we can't do anything about. Why? Why did you feel like that would be helpful in any way? The difference between what you have told us and total ignorance is slim to nothing."

The man looks between the four of you and makes a conceding gesture. "If that is all you took away from this conversation, then so be it. Ultimately, you still know more than you did. For instance that the abilities you have are not going to slowly kill you like some kind of radiation, nor are you a danger to those around you in that regard. Had those been concerns, I would have been direct in telling you the kind of danger you pose to others."

He raises his hands slightly, palms up. "If I were able to tell you more about the attack or those responsible, it would do one of two things. Whip you into a frenzy trying to find some way to strike back, which could include trying to spread word as far and wide as you possibly can which itself would either have you locked away as a lunatic or ostracized, or you would come to peace with that you cannot change. Given your reactions to things thus far, I doubt it would be the latter. Beyond being bound from giving you further information, I would not give your target a name or face in hopes you will not waste your life seeking it." Anyone attempting to can get the impression he is not exactly speculating here.

The elder man stands and steps away from the table. "I believe our time here is up, however. I can only keep this "trick" up for so long. Perhaps we will cross paths again, and I do so hope that you will have come to better grips with the situation and have found peace with it by then. I truly do."

Between one blink and the next, the Tim Horton's is bustling once again with no sign of the enigmatic man.

After what is probably an awkward pause, Kara says, "Given all these folk's sudden arrival, I suspect he was never here." She looks around the place to see if any of the patrons have changes since before the man's arrival. She suspects it hasn't. "I suggest we take some time to digest that before we make any further decisions about what we may or may not do with our abilities. Maybe Rick had it right and ignorance is bliss. Maybe not." She takes a bite of her donut, not really enjoying it.

"Nice trick. So what do we do now? He said we could do whatever we wanted. We could try to go back to living a normal life. I don't know about all of you but for me, it wouldn't be easy. Watching the news and seeing some disaster or senseless crime and wondering if you could have helped. It would be mentally devastating after awhile. But I don't know if I'm ready to dress up in tights and be a hero."

"That would be so cliche, wouldn't it?" Kara says. "We would just need masks. Although I'm sure facial recognition software will probably see through masks eventually. Still, I understand the need to do something."

Lloyd knows better than to stress over things he absolutely can not change. So far, he's been able to hide some of the strange abilities he's manifest. Oh except of the super-strength, but even that seems to have been "explained" in a way to avoid suspicion...at least he hopes.

He had received no real answers to his most pressing questions. One simple phrase kept repeating over and over in his mind. That's life...suck it up! Sometimes Lloyd could be short on compassion...even to himself.

He looks around the table at everyone there. These people...you don't even know them. But they are like you, you may need them in the future. You need to keep in touch with them.

"Well..." he says clumsily, "'...I suppose I should keep in touch with you folks. If I learn anything or need help. Can I call you? I mean...if you need me for anything...anything at all, then feel free to call." The whole situation is awkward, but awkward seems to be the new normal.

Jack tried to picture that feeling. The sensations he felt during that single, involuntary blink. His mind had stretched out the entire experience for hours, just so he can try and isolate exactly how it felt to be in that being's trap, and within actual reality. To pinpoint the exact moment sound started to return, when the light changed as it hit his eyelids, and something... something else. There had to be something else. Some subtle shift. That would be the seed of his investigation, that lone, fledgling, possible feeling.

They think him as a human incapable of understanding what lay on the side, that it was impossible for him to ever figure it out, to see the seams between this world and whatever world they were a part of. Jack was no longer completely human. His mind had expanded to such a degree that it could outclass any computer of this era, and continue to outpace them for another thousand.

Jack was a god among men.

What kind of god would he become?

"...I have your contact information memorized already. I'll provide everyone with a number you can use for me in return. Call me anytime, if you learn something new or... even if you just want to talk to someone else about all this insanity." He spoke, even and concise. His hands already worked quickly, writing neat and even numbers within a small notebook. He tore out four slips of paper, and passed them around to everyone.

"I suppose we aren't going to learn anything else while we're here," Kara says. "We have each other's contact information. I'm only in town another day before I leave for an assignment for my job in Miami."

After they say their goodbyes, Kara gets up and leaves. She walks a few blocks to another cafe and steps into the bathroom. From there she feels for the electricity in the wall and with a mental snap, she disappears from the bathroom to reappear in her hotel room, several miles away. She is marveled at how arriving isn't as disorienting as one might expect. "I wonder if I could get to Miami like that."

Lindy added the contact info to her phone for Jackson and Lloyd. She stayed long enough to finish tge food she bought then headed back to her hotel room. She finished editing her photos and submitted them to the publisher.

Later she browsed some costume websites for a short period of time. Most of the costumes for women were skin tight and showed way too much for her taste. Then she called her agent checking to see if there were any upcoming jobs. There was a potential job for the Army. Her agent was negotiating with them. They were looking for someone to do a photo shoot for a promotional campaign about women in the Army showcasing the multitude of career opportunities beyond combat that were available. Lindy told her agent not to overprice her services on that one as it was for a good cause.

After chatting a bit longer, Lindy ended the call and went outside for some fresh air. There was much to think about. Mainly what was she going to do with these abilities that were forced upon her. Being a supervillain was out of the question. She could never be that cruel and heartless. She wasn't even sure she wanted to be a superhero. It would be tough to have to travel for work and suddenly need to go save someone or stop a crime. Someone was bound to figure it out eventually.

She strolled a short distance from the hotel and sat on the ground to relax and think.
