Jarrak of Blackmoore
HP: 26/26 | AC: 18/20 (shield) | Init: -1 | Perception: 10

At Gundren's raised eyes Jarrak just responds with a smile and a gesture common to merchants, indicating a deal best handled in private. Common shorthand for, a story for later.

"Well, I am free of duty and obligation, so I'd be happy to offer any assistance I can," He eases himself down into his seat.

To Abigail he whispers in response, "When you are discussing a job yes, but just coming up to a merchant you don't know and asking that can result in you being chased off for being a spy for bandits. Weather or not you are one. It's important not to scare new people by asking too many questions too quick."

He looks back to his friends, "Allow me to introduce my cousin, Gundren Stonebreaker."

"Gundren, might I introduce you to my fellow travellers,"
He waves to each in kind, "Lord Tiberium Avearice, Lan my favorite messenger monk, my fellow traveling entertainer Jack, Anne Natomi a talented young mage."

He smiles and places a gentle hand on Abigail's shoulder, "Abigail Bright, aspiring sage in the making."

"And," he pauses looking at Kiara with a blank look, then gives her a subtle wave to prompt her for a name with a somewhat embarrassed look on his face. How had he missed her name?

Abigail Bright, Junior Lorist
AC:17 (Scale+Dex+Shield) | HP: 17 | Init +2 | Passive Perception: 13
Spell slots 3x1st | Bardic Inspiration 4

Abigail nods at Jarrak's words with a look of committing them to memory for later answering an essay question on a pop-quiz.

She smiles prettily at her uncle's description and blushes a bit. "Still learning, or should I say 're-learning' the life of a traveler. Jarrak was a dear family friend of my parents and saved me when our troupe was otherwise beset upon. There's no better man for guarding your mining equipment and such. And I'm sure you qualify for a friends and family discount." She says with a broad grin and mysterious wink that made it ambiguous whether she was teasing or not. It seemed like a valid negotiation tactic.

"It was unclear from your story whether you and/or your partner were going to be accompanying the three carts... something about going down early? Is that still the case?"

Kiara
AC: 18 l HP: 19 l Init: +4 l Passive Perception: 14

"And," he pauses looking at Kiara with a blank look, then gives her a subtle wave to prompt her for a name with a somewhat embarrassed look on his face. How had he missed her name?
Kirara merely smiled an innocent smile at the look on Jarraks face. Shed held back listening and observing everything as she played the part of the shy type that let her friends do the talking.

"Kiara..." she said quietly her voice barely a whisper. "Nice to meet you." she added as she affected a somewhat awkward tone

Image"Lord Tully"

Tully stood straighter when Jarrack introduced him by his full title, and didn't bother to wave away formalities here. The old Dwarf was comfortable standing back and watching the way Jarrack handled such negotiations, finding himself quite pleased. Using one's family connections to secure work opportunities definitely earned him a few points. Answering the Young girl's eager questions so readily, letting her in on some of the nuance that went on in such negotiations was another high point.

When the battle-worn warrior met his eyes again next, the Dwarf would offer him a nod of acknowledgement and appreciation. Very well done.

His eyes shifted when Kirara offered her own voice. Always quiet, that one.

Jack

Jack raises his hand, tilting a hat that he isn't wearing with it.

"Jack sir, just Jack. If I'm hearing you right, you're looking to hire some folks to take a wagon out to this mine of yours. Not expecting too much trouble, but better safe than sorry?"

*pause for answer*

"What about this other group you hired and then they showed their true colors and bailed? You expecting trouble from them?"

*pause*

"What about work once we're there? Turn right around and head back by foot?"

Lan:

As Kai lands on one of the eves roof of the school, the familiar watches as the foursome take their leave of the town. Just as they walk into the tree line of the surrounding forest and out of sight Lan could almost swear that the largest of the group looked directly at the owl, almost taunting that he knew they were being watched and did not care.

Alrighty then, let's see how badly the dice rollers hate me today.
Barbarian 1 Perception: _: 1D20+4 = [20]+4 = 24
Barbarian 2 Perception: _: 1D20+4 = [17]+4 = 21
Dragonborn Perception: _: 1D20+4 = [4]+4 = 8
Half-Elf Perception: _: 1D20+7 = [5]+7 = 12
Well, that went better than I thought.

Everyone:

"Gundren, might I introduce you to my fellow travellers," He waves to each in kind, "Lord Tiberium Avearice, Lan my favorite messenger monk, my fellow traveling entertainer Jack, Anne Natomi a talented young mage."

"Kiara..." she said quietly her voice barely a whisper with an innocent smile. "Nice to meet you." she added as she affected a somewhat awkward tone.

Gundren and his partner, Silas, look to each person as they are introduced, nodding a silent greeting in return.

"Ahh, I've heard about your company before." Tully said with an approving nod. "Would be doing your ancestors proud getting back into the swing of things, hm? We can't let some rambunctious tribesman get in the way of good, proper mining now, shall we?" Gundren smiles at the small compliment given by a respected elder. "Exactly!" Gundren exclaims before taking a respectably large pull from his drink while Silas has a look on his face that says he is typically the calmer of the two and is waiting for his business partner to be done with his, apparently usual, theatrics.

However, Abigail, ever the curious mind, presses the dwarf about his situation. "It was unclear from your story whether you and/or your partner were going to be accompanying the three carts... something about going down early? Is that still the case?"

"Indeed it is!" Gundren replies in between breaths as he takes another drink leaving Silas to provide a more in depth answer. "Originally we had been riding with the carts but then we received a message from an employee of ours already in Phandelver that there is a situation that requires our direct attention as quickly as possible. Thus we planned to push on ahead at first light tomorrow morning and have the group we had paid to simply finish escorting our personal belongings on their own, but rumors about the local Orc tribes starting to cause problems in the area made them decide to take their leave of us despite not completing the work we'd already paid them for." This last part is accompanied with a disapproving look sent Gundren's way, and his response is to ignore it and take a third long sip from his drink.

Jack raises his hand, tilting a hat that he isn't wearing with it. "Jack sir, just Jack. If I'm hearing you right, you're looking to hire some folks to take a wagon out to this mine of yours. Not expecting too much trouble, but better safe than sorry?"

"Exactly!" Gundren says as he returns his tankard to the table. "Just a little personal care given to our personal gear."

Jack asked his next question without hesitation. "What about this other group you hired and then they showed their true colors and bailed? You expecting trouble from them?"

It is Silas who answers this time. "No. I'm more surprised they left as they did given how the large one boasted about his being able to handle any trouble we might have encountered along the way."

"What about work once we're there? Turn right around and head back by foot?" Jack inquired.

"We already have workers waiting in Phandelver, so you'd be free to pursue employment from there. However, should any of you wish to simply return to Lut Golen, then Gundren would be happy to pay for your return by whatever means you choose." That last bit brings the starting of a protest from the Dwarf that is quickly silenced with a stern look from his human friend that makes it clear that matter is NOT up for debate.

Lan finally speaks up after having sat their quietly, eyes closed. She stands to wander to the group.

"Two barbarians, a black-clad Dragonborn, and a Half-elven minstrel." she announces. "They left for the treeline, seemingly uninterested in this arrangement any further, but one of them knew they were under surveillance so there's a small chance the disinterest was feigned."

"Still, I'd be surprised if they were a further bother but not out of the realm of possibility." The messenger-monk says.

"Three carts of personal gear and a team to protect them?" Lan asks with a raised eyebrow denoting skepticism. But she waves it away with a shrug. The Monastic Messengers strove for security and confidentiality. It was generally understood that parcels harmful to the carrier or recipient garnered... reprisals... from the Order, but other than that, people needed their secrets.

Jarrak of Blackmoore
HP: 26/26 | AC: 18/20 (shield) | Init: -1 | Perception: 10

Jarrak hides a smile behind his glass as he hears the others speak.

Three wagons of personal equipment sounded strange, until one considered how long they might be working from that location. If you intended to live there for years? Tools and furniture for two houses and an office could easily take up that much space, especially since some of the nicer stuff couldn't be stacked without damaging it.
Assuming one was willing to spend the time and money to move it instead of just having something built on the site.

He didn't give it much thought.

Lan's comment about the mercenaries lingered, though. It wasn't unusual for somebody to talk big and turn tail at the first sign of trouble, but that being said it was also bad business to walk on a contract. Once word got out you weren't as good as your oath you could expect little business, or at least that was his own findings.

Either they knew something more about these orcs, they were planning some betrayal, or they were exceptionally poor mercenaries. He prayed it was the latter.

"Well, as I said, cousin, I'd be more than happy to help in any way I can," He takes a quick sip of his mead, before continuing, "But I can't hardly expect my companions to do the same from the goodness of their hearts, good though they may be. I'm assuming you'd be willing to offer them some fair compensation for the time and effort for us to deliver the carts to you in good order?"

Anne gives a nod and a pleasant smile when introduced. "I'm sure we can come to an arrangement."

"Hmm Phandelver...Phandelver" She says trying to remember if she'd heard anything about the settlement. "Seems like as good a destination as any."

"Hrmph," The dwarven elder grunts in displeasure. "Iffin you have their names I'd like to hear them. I'll make sure of it that word get's around that such a lot would happily take your coin and then turn around before the job is even finished."

I, I don't want to make assumptions about your ability protect yourselves but if they're as bad as your saying.."
