She turned toward the others, and would help Yahata to relay the state of the cities defensive in this first, initial assault. She turns in the end toward the more knowledgeable god in-waiting, looking upon him like he was their leader in lieu of their missing yakuza archer. "I leave it to you to decide our ultimate course. We could both help Soyokaze attend to the troops, or one of us could join Kuroi in a pursuit of the wu"

War. It was an inevitable truth of the world, and while there those who thought it served only as a harbinger of death and misery, Yahata was schooled enough in the matter to know otherwise. Yes, he knew well the necessity of winning peace by force. Today would be no different. These mortals had stepped on to the god's canvas; for Yahata, war was an art, and he was a master. It was a great shame that they may never know they had the privilege of falling to Hachiman's blade.

"Kurio will be fine on his own," Yahata said after an extended assessment. Finding that even Jingu's arrows could not pierce the enemy's armor, and it was clear a magical force was at work. The yokai was best suited to move across the battlefield and take out whatever was responsible, and he would probably prefer to operate alone. "I need us on the front-lines. We'll reinforce the right and left flanks each. Let them push down the center; encourage their arrogance and let them think they're gaining advantage. Once Soyokaze has tended to the injured, we'll envelope them with our renewed forces," Yahata explained his plan for a pincer movement.

Kuro flowed over the walls of the city in mistform, thinning out as wide as possible as he crossed the ground between city and besieging army. As he closed on his prey, he condensed into almost an inky ball of black and flitted from shadow to shadow as he followed in the footsteps of patrolling enemy soldiers and snuck around tents. The most perceptive or spiritually strong of the enemy soldiers felt a shiver run down their spine or reached for their blades with no clear reason for doing so, but none of them felt sufficiently threatened to raise the alarm.

Kuro navigated his way to the center of the camp to find the tent of the enemy leader. He was tempted to get closer, but it was too well guarded to do so undetected and his mission called him elsewhere. He picked up the smell of incense and followed the sound of prayers from there, coming to a more modest tent obviously housing his prey. Circling to the back, Kuro slipped in underneath the edge of the canvas. The dim lighting offered no cover from him and he easily spotted the wizened old man sitting on the floor of the tent, head bowed in prayer. The sorcerer lifted his head, eyes squinting as he sought out the source of the chill he'd felt. His hands reached for his staff and the case of seals nearby but Kuro's hands were quicker than the sorcerer's and one talon neatly slashed across the mans throat while the other stiffled any screams.

He exited the way he had entered, retracing his previous steps back through the camp to return to the city to report that his deed had been done.

The old healer never got used to the smell of war.

There was the smell of leather with the treatments that made it armor hard and water resistant. There were unwashed bodies and the scent of heightened expectation, fear, and anticipation. There was the foulness of insufficient latrines dug in haste and placed where the malicious wind spirits could shift and send the noisome odor back at the mortals responsible. And there was blood. So much blood and the other fragrances of internal fluids never meant to be exposed to air.

The Brass Blade Warrioress was his constant companion - a chaperone who wielded nearby soldiers as good as any chiurgeon with a scalpel. Her barked orders formed shields of steel and flesh, and living spears of gruff, determined men to wedge into the enemy to drive them back from the wounded. Soyokaze would have pointed out the irony of risking wounds to unhurt soldiers while attempting to get at and treat wounded soldiers but he held his tongue. He knew this was not the time for his... peaceful proclivities. He didn't know where the Bird Warrior was. The man had some grand notion about squad formation that was way beyond the scope of simple wound care.

Once they got to the makeshift triage area (perilously close to the front lines) the old healer had no attention to spare as he directed the several monks he had with him to set down the unguent jars and poultice pots, unpacked the cleaned bandages and, in the worst cases, sewing kits. As the learned men set about their work of setting up for life restoration Soyokaze's real work began, this was the part that removed the ever-present smile from his face and made him as weary as a man of his apparent age should be - the unenviable task of deciding who would live and who would die, who got treated and who got administered the 'special' wine he brought and safeguarded personally, the Sweet Release and Long Sleep drafts that he bore in special water skins. Most were easy, at a glance he could tell who needed bandages and who had all-but-expired already. It was the in-between cases that really taxed his skill - the soldiers that, were there not a gods-forsaken war going on, he would operate on personally and give them every chance at life with herbs and treatments. For those, he must become Shinigami, a spirit of Death, determining who would get his attention and who might be spared.

In three cases he directed for nearly-mortally wounded soldiers to be brought to his own personal operating theater. An insistent lieutenant tried to make it four as he ordered the old healer to tend to his son, a captain under his command who took several enemy arrows to his throat and chest and who only clung to life, Soyokaze was sure, to hear his father tell him that he had done good and that his father loved him and was proud of him. The lieutenant, instead, blustered and bullied and snorted through the rage of his paternal impotence as Soyokaze, not unkindly, ignored the man dishonoring himself in his grief and denying his son the words he craved. Since the youth could not swallow the medicated wine Soyokaze used a fine fish spine to administer a dose of a drug that would stop the dying man's heart, but only after whispering into the near-corpse's ear that the father's behavior and desperation could only be bourne from the fiercest of love and admiration.

The young captain died in peace. Even that took too much time and one of the patients he had marked for personal attention succumb to his wounds. The other two, after much effort and application of secret healing techniques and lost medicinal arts, were stable enough that he could direct monks to bear them back to the city for recovery. There were several others he directed similarly and at first the battalion commander screamed at the old healer for taking soldiers from under his command. That is when the old man's patience nearly gave out. The old crane-in-man-form fixed the commander with a steel-hard gaze that was filled with promises of otherworldly whispers and secrets that would drive a man insane and gibbering with terror-filled dreams for the rest of his days. He took a step toward the commander and it was, for a brief moment, like a tornado had touched down though not a wisp of wind disturbed the area nor howl interrupted the normal camp sounds. But Soyokaze came back to himself and smiled explaining how those he was taking would not be much good and that the remaining soldiers would fight even harder knowing that such a relief awaited them should they be as valiantly injured as their comrades. There could have been a warning glance from Dai Jin as well, but if so, the alchemist didn't see it. Either way the man made no further protest and the group returned to the city.

The siege

Post by Camus »

The battle for the survival of the clan continues.

After the carefully executed assassination, the forces of Imagawa lost their magical armour, and the arrows of Owari find purchase in their exposed skin. The enemy Daimyo can now be seen in the battlefield barking orders and pointing at places with his iron fan, directing his men to strategic positions and formations. Somehow he must know that with their protection removed, he needs to speed up his siege or face defeat. His men follow his orders to the letter and soon mount a coordinated attack to the outer wall. Siege ladders are placed and cover fire is shot, and in a matter of seconds the walls are crawling with enemy soldiers.
A spear wielding samurai attacks Yahata as he was moving the archer, but the godling simply dodges and the stray spear pierced another enemy soldier that was approaching from behind in the right eye. Then he simply pushes both off the wall to their demise. Dai Jin has to shield Soyokaze, as he hurries after the wounded, dashing forward and clearing the way with few precise cuts. But the enemies kept coming and soon overwhelmed the defenders. Even Kuroi has to turn to mist to avoid being pierced by enemy arrows, even mundane weapons might be enchanted; perhaps the sorcerer he killed was not the only one.
Eventually, even the virtues have to retreat from the wall, as the horde of enemies slay the Owari loyalists without hindrance. Imagawa laughs a laugh that is so tainted with evil that even Kuroi feels his stomach gurgle in displeasure, but there is nothing else to do now, the wall is lost, as well as a whole platoon of soldiers. Despite that Imagawa also felt the steel of Owari, as a full siege battalion lies in the ground after the dust settles.

Siege of Owari
Imagawa: Level 8 Army
Attack: 10 (Base)
Defense: 6 (Base) +0 (Kuroi killed Touro)
Resistance: 8 (Base)
Vitality: 8 (Base) -1: 7
Morale: 8 (Base) +1 (Imagawa)

Owari: Level 6 fortress
Attack: 4 (Base)
Defense: 8 (Base) +1 (Hama)
Resistance: 8 (Base) +1 (Soyokaze)
Vitality: 6 (Base) +1 (Soyokaze+Yahata) -2: 5
Morale: 4 (Base) +1 (Dai Jin) +1 (Soyokaze+Dai Jin)

Imagawa attacks with a 30! and deals damage to Owari castle, Owari looses 2 vitality because it was a critical hit (new rule!). Owari rolls morale and manages to pass by 1! If Soyokaze hadn't been successful Owari wouldn't have been able to counter attack
Owari attacks with a 17, and Imagawa rolls poorly to resist, loosing 1 vitality.

You can now try to device other ways to affect the battle.

Dai Jin
HP: 0
Status: Edo-Style Guerrilla Leader
o===)---------------

The woman clicks her tongue as a blade catches on her armor, yet she moves with the blow and comes around with a backhanded swing, slicing the man's open back. Blood spurts forth as he falls to the ground writhing in pain from his fatal wound, yet she doesn't seem the least bit bothered by it. To have been forced back from the wall into the city's own streets with such ease, how could she ever hope to compare herself to her brother's spirit? That was a man who had fought tooth and nail against the Northern Barbarians day and night upon the great wall which protected her home nation, and yet they couldn't hold their positions for more then a few hours.

With the enemy having breached past the walls, their forces had broken like a burst dam and we're now spread thin across the city streets. The Imagawa were sure to take advantage of the confusion if the men weren't brought together under a strong command. Caught out in the open and away from their fortifications, she could see now how the men of Owari struggled to fight against the rising tide. Each footfall, every path taken, it became clearer to her the longer the seconds passed by. These men grew up in this city, knew it's every alley and street, a mental layout carved in their minds over a lifetime spent. They used that knowledge now in the way they tried to avoid the worst invaders, yet it was an unrefined tactic at best.

A terrible wail echo'd through the street as a dark shadow passed through the crowd, drawing her eye toward a lone elder in a sea of death. An expression of sorrow lingered within that man's old soulful eyes, yet he met her look with such an intensity. Soyokaze nodded only once, yet it was enough as like a lighting bolt everything suddenly clicked together. Her voice reached the dark shadow of Kuroi to grab his attention while he tore through the line of invaders, her sword directing him and a contingent toward the alleyways. The darker laughter she heard as they laughed gave her a small, twisted measure of hope.

Jin shoved her her sword up into the air with a powerful shout, drawing the attention of both the Imagawa and Owari alike. A cutting motion sparked an attack from both sides once more as she charged forward to plunge her blade deep into a samurai's gut. The clash of steel and cries of blood echoed' with her ears, reaffirming the knowledge she held that not all of her men here would walk away from this fight. Enemy now engaged solely on them however, they were aware far too late of the arrows that plunged into them from above as that familiar smoky essence landed in their midst.

Again and again she led soldiers in frontal assaults through the streets, picking off smaller contingents of the Imawawa forces alongside the Virtue of Darkness. It was hard to make out the old man himself who helped give her the confident spark she finally needed, yet she knew that even he was doing his part in his own way. Tending to the casualties of their side too injured to move yet not to close to death, assuring away straggling citizens who had yet to heed the call for evacuation into safer areas, or simply giving a young man the words he needed to bring his sword to bare once more for the love of his home.

The fights they led were but single brutal moments in a bloodsoaked war that would only continue to fester as the streets grew sticky and red. She couldn't even begin to fathom the amount of life lost on both sides so far, let alone what was to come next. All she could do was hoist her blade high, the memory of her brother fresher now then it'd ever been before.
Am I dead? Am I alive? The answer may surprise you!

Just to expand on Soyokaze's part....

"You're sure of the exact count?" The old alchemist and diviner asked for a third time. "And a combined 270 stone?" he confirms, plugging that into a contraption of beads known as a soroban. "Takes this down, quickly. 'Move the large man, Wu Shi Ming, from the 4th company to the third.' His metal is needed to balance that squad. And find the flatulent soldier from the temple battle; he's needed on the street of Tanners with his foul humours. Go. Now!" Soyokaze gestured frantically in his fervor to balance the balance. "You!" he points to a second monk, "Find a soldier no greater than 23 hands tall born in the Year of the Horse. A female is best, but a man with sallow skin and a ruddy nose will do. They must join the forces at the Paper Mill as soon as possible." He shoos yet another man off. He longed to be at the hospital tending the many injured from the recent push but without his knowledge of 'The Way of Yin and Yang', the efforts of both The Eternal Warrior and the Darkness Demon would have been for naught.

He just hoped it'd be enough.

YAHATA
HP: 0

With a shimmer of divine light, the white dove’s feathers gave way to the shape of tempered steel. A flick of the demigod’s wrist sent the newly formed knife flying towards a man who had sworn allegiance to the wrong lord on this day, piercing easily through his disenchanted armor and embedding itself deep into his chest. Another in a long line of those struck down by the Lord of the Eight Banners. Yahata did not usually take pride in the bloodshed itself; he took true pleasure in his own skill. He was deadly, not ruthless. Still, the cruel laughter of Imagawa tempted the warrior to make an exception, and he smirked as his target dropped to his knees.

Fate would not hand Yahata or the forces of Owari an easy victory today, however. Good. Anything less than the most epic of struggles would not draw the attention of the gods. The godling hoped that the eyes of greater powers were upon him this day. The wall had been breached, and a change of tactics was needed. Yahata had to ensure that their forces did not become too scattered, or else a successful counterattack would not be possible.

“Fall back from the walls!” Yahata sounded out the call for a temporary retreat. “Regroup closer to the castle gates! Do not allow them to break your formations!”

The forces in the immediate area heeded the commands, using the cover of the archers’ fire to move back from the encroaching frontline. The former god was about to give another order but was cut off when he noticed that one Owari soldier had lost pace with his brothers in arms. He moved with a desperate limp as the enemy advanced over the walls, threatening to swallow him like a terrible wave. He would certainly be killed.

But who decided that?

Hachiman was the God of War, and he would be the one to decide these things.

With speed that was greater than any mortal man’s, Yahata was upon the injured soldier. The demigod gripped him by the shoulder, and with a grunt of exertion, hurled him towards all the others. It would not be a pleasant landing; the soldier would almost certainly have a dislocated shoulder to accompany the battered leg. But he would live. And for that, Yahata could be happy.

Then a spear pierced through his shoulder.

*****

Beautiful.

That was what Hachiman remembered most about the first time he was graced by Amaterasu’s presence. The Goddess of the Sun. A beauty that put the first rays of dawn across the horizon to shame. A smile warmer than the morning light. When not in her presence, you might swear the world itself would be consumed by darkness. The radiant strength she exuded was so beautiful as well. Even if she were to fall seven times, she would rise up eight.

“Hello, child. What is your name?”

“Hachiman, mam.”

“Awfully young to be playing with a real sword, aren’t you?”

“I’m not playing, mam. I’m training to become a great warrior someday.”

“Oh, and why is that?”

“To honor my mother’s wishes. She says that true strength comes from discipline… and that I lack both.”

“She sounds like a wise woman. What do you think makes a great warrior, child?”

“Well… a great warrior should be strong in battle, obviously. But even if become really strong, I don’t want to lose respect for my enemies. Mother says that a warrior can be honorable in victory. A great warrior’s word should be admired by both his allies and his enemies. Oh, and he should look cool in battle!”

“Hmhmhmhm. I believe we will meet again someday. I have great expectations of you.”

Great expectations.

Great expectations…

*****

“Pfft. What is this?” the Imagawa soldier mocked, sneering down at the body driven through by his now crimson spear. “Did they send a child to fight?”

“No.” Yahata growled.

His head snapped to face his attacker, focusing on nothing else except him. The searing pain in his shoulder was nothing. A mortal concern. Yahata was beyond such a wound. He raised his right arm, giving a wordless command to his partner. A short distance away, a knife embedded in a dead man’s chest flickered into the shape of a blood-soaked dove, which darted through the air towards the demigod. When the bird reached his hand, she let out another flash of light, taking the shape of a large war mallet, seemingly meant for someone twice Yahata’s size.

“They sent a god.”

The God of War swung forward with all the strength his fragment of divine power offered. The weapon smashed into the soldier’s chest, sounding out a deafening, sickening crack as the armor and much of his chest caved in. With a burst of air, he enemy hurtled backwards, toppling over several Imagawa soldiers. He violently collided with the wall from which he came, the knockback great enough to carve cracks into the stone. Another in a long line of those struck down by the Lord of the Eight Banners.

The siege

Post by Camus »

The battle for the survival of the clan rages on!

Forced to abandon the wall after the unstoppable advance of Inagawa, the forces of Owari regroup under the command of the Virtues. Dai Jin leads splinter squadrons in the narrow streets, ambushing and slaughtering the invading forces thanks to the aid of the light and the darkness. Such balance in the forces of the shing and shang warranted the defenders a demolishing victory. Soyokaze knew the importance of balance, and he made an effort to distribute the forces of Owari according to the feng shui.
It seemed as the defenders had the upper hand, winning the skirmishes and defeating many enemies in the streets, but Imagawa had more surprises under his sleeves. The thunderous sound of rope flinging and wood stretching and snapping fills the air for a moment. Siege engines shooting! It takes a moment to realize what was happening. Yahata couldn't believe the tactics the daimyo was using: He was opening fire on his own men with his siege machines to level the city. As realization of what was about to happen came down to them, so did the flaming bolts and boulders. The enemy archers who had taken the outer wall by now also opened fire with flaming arrows on both armies. Chaos erupted on the battlefield as boulders the size of small houses wreck havoc, destroying houses and men alike, without distinction of allegiance. The flaming bolts exploded spreading fiery splinters which quickly turned the lower city into a raging inferno. Unable to distinguish if the people running in the smoke were friend or foe, Imagawa archers shoot both alike, preying on the lucky ones that survived the siege attack.
Cruel as it was, Imagawa's tactics payed off, as his loses were considerably inferior to those of Owari. Neither army, however, was willing to run in fear, and the battle took yet another course.

As everybody turned to the second wall, you can make the outlines of the Tiger of Owari, standing on the rooftop of the wall, his features hard to make out as the flaming inferno bellow cast it with a strange dancing light. He spreads out his arms, and shouts out to the samurai and ashigaru "Men and women of Owari! Today we will offer our spirits to the gods! The Oni are at our doorstep and are being rather rude, but one has to respect guests, so I ask you, let us show them the way to their ancestors!" What follows is an uproar of fervour, as the army feels inspire to greatness by their elderly leader. You can also feel the courage and valour seep beneath your skin.

With the health of the army being critically low and horrified by the turning upon his own men that was done by the dishonorable invader Soyokaze knew his role. He distributes the incense balls of healing among the various and largest repositories of the wounded*.

While he, himself, knowing the limits of a single, mortal form, knows that it is insufficient for this level of devastation. He orders all windows and doors of all healing places thrown wide open. He then bargains with the wind spirits, he will gives them secret knowledge if they immediately use that knowledge at his direction and immediately. A bargain made, Soyokaze opens the vessel containing Wind and lets it pour out. He then, out of sight of the others, takes to the sky with beats of white-feathered wings, the silent majesty of a crane rising into the smoke. He trumpets his directions, language bearing no impact on his ability to direct the wind spirits and they travel through the streets, bearing the cool relief of his Healing Secrets to friend and 'foe' alike in the city... any harmed by Imagawa's treachery (and still alive to benefit) will feel it. He knows his companions would berate him for healing the enemy soldiers harmed by their own side's efforts but no one should suffer from that dastardly attack.
*Healing balls created previously, but let's see how effective they are as a whole.
Healing Balls: 1d20+5+3 25
Oh wow, On 3 30ft' radius groups that would heal 4 conditions, for 1 hr, not sure how that affects the overall army health though.

Stunt!
Healing 5, Range-Perception, Area-Perception (Any who feels the Wind). Flying high enough that his Perception can reach the whole of contested areas of the city and the wounded soldiers (friend and foe alike).
Healing Wind: 1d20+5+3 25 Again, same number in a row! oh my. Anyone in the city who can feel the wind will have 4 injury restored. Not sure how this will effect over all army health. Only some of Imagawa's army are inside the walls though, so there's that.

I think Soyokaze would be Exhausted by this effort but he will have done his best as a paragon of healing to support the army. Some really good rolls (helped alot by the Tiger's inspire). Next turn I may use HP to reduce it to Fatigued, but let's see what else happens.

After this expenditure, a much uncoordinated crane will glide tiredly to an alley and, a moment later, an exhausted old man, Soyokaze, will stumble back into the tents.

Kuro cursed Soyokaze's softheartedness as he felt the wind blow through the streets. They needed to bolster their own troops, but rousing the enemy at the same time hindered them more than it helped. Unless they could turn the enemy forces against their master, convince them that the healing was the work of the divine and proof of the righteousness of their side. But the din of battle and smoke that filled the air closed the ears of the Imagawa troops from Kuro's dark whispers.

"Today we will offer our spirits to the gods!"

Personally, Yahata wasn't interested in the spirits of the mortals. He would be much more satisfied with their continued strength and bravery in battle. The warrior made his way towards the Tiger as a refreshingly pleasant breeze numbed the pain in his shoulder, the flow of blood slowing to a stop. The former God of War and Oda Nobuhide needed to come up with a plan for a counteroffensive; if they didn't act now, they might be pushed back beyond the hope of victory.
Quick post to not hold us up. Yahata is going to consult with the Tiger to form a strategy, maybe to give another boost to Attack?

The battle for the survival of the clan rages on!
The heroic actions of Soyokaze seem to have prevented the fall of the clan to come knocking at the doors of Owari too soon. The magical winds wash over the mortally wounded and restore them from their injuries.
The look in Imagawa soldiers couldn't depict confusion better, but the heroes are unable to purchase on their initial confusion to turn their loyalties away from their sinister lord.
Seeing the Tiger atop the rooftops, Yahata moves next to him, and together they put up a plan to use the narrow streets to their advantage, drawing the enemy soldiers away from their captains, and thus reducing their effectiveness in battle.
The plan seems to work perfectly, as the Imagawa soldiers are drawn to Soyokaze`s trap, and get covered in the slime and stick mixture! Soon they find that also their clothes and armour melt away and expose their nakedness to the enemy. Embarrassed beyond imagination, the attacking squadron are no match for the counterattack of Owari, which put them out of their misery.
