Ector frowns, "Am understanding. If finding anything you are making lots of money. But is dangerous, if you find more than expecting."

He sighs, "But is hard, if you hire guards maybe is not worth doing adventure, is possible they steal from you."

"Is big risk, big reward, but remember, big risk is life,"
Ector says, "Am thinking Tear is having right idea. Is probably good idea to get somebody to go with you, or go for you. Maybe you get lucky, find good people to help."
Tear nods. "Before we even think about doing anything like this again I'm going to look up proper body guard and adventurer contracts so we can properly minimize. I'm sure there's some sort of standardized item retrieval contract we can draw from for future searches for specialty goods."

"Right now I just want to get back, clean up, get something to eat and rest. This has been a long day, never thought I would almost die to a goblin shooting an arrow in my chest. Normally their aim sucks a lot more. Part of our investigation might want to check if they are getting training."
The Rescuees both nod vehemently in agreement. Recette said "I don't think I've ever felt so grimy and covered in dirt in my life. I'm probably never going to get these clothes clean again. Food, a bath, and sleep are going to be heavenly."

Tina holds the sword in hand, strongly suspecting there is something unusual to the blade. For a moment she considers getting a magical expert to identify any enchantments... but then she might have to answer uncomfortable questions about how a novice adventurer - a knight-errant with no deeds to her name - came across such a blade. And could she trust what they told her, in any case? If Sariel could not do it, Tina decided she was content letting the sword's powers, if any, remain a mystery for now.
Recette catches you looking at your new sword. "If your curious about that sword, you could talk to Elder Abel. Whenever I manage to get a hold of a magical item for resale, I always have the Elder or Rachel look it over first. Either by book or spell they can always find out what your dealing with."
Ysariel wrote: Fri Jul 05, 2019 3:28 pmShe turns to Recette. "We are bound by contract to accompany the caravan to Tychestoile, but I think Ector has the right of it. A trusted adventurer friend would be helpful." Come to think of it, that sounded like a modest if comfortable life - working as an adventuring partner for some girl in a village, helping her repay a father's debt...
Recette gave a nod. "Yeah adventurers like you pass through town every so often, I get a lot of them as customers, so finding someone for a one time or short term contract shouldn't be difficult. Plus there's usually lots of mercenary type folk hanging around the Cock and Bulls Tavern, maybe we can find someone there."

Tear gives a wince at the idea. You remember that the tavern in question has a rough reputation.
Ysariel wrote: Fri Jul 05, 2019 3:28 pm A final nod, and she moves to leave. "We shouldn't linger in the open like this. Let's return to the village and get some much-needed rest."

"Yes. That would be a better place to hold further discussions."
Your journey back to town is uneventful, you arrive early evening just before it starts getting dark. One of the town constables is patrolling the boundary of the village when you arrive. He tenses but relaxes when he recognizes your group, and gasps in surprise when he sees Recette and Tear.

"Goodness me, you two look a frightful mess. No one had seen you two for a while and folks were getting worried, especially with the banditry problem." He turns to the rest of you. "Thanks for getting these two home safe, I'm sure people will be clamoring for the story of where you found them but you all look pretty worn out so I won't hold you up. The Sergeant did say that if any of us spotted you to pass on a message. There's a meeting of the village council tomorrow mid-morning and its requested that you attend if available. The sarge is going to give an update on the bandit situation to the council and wants to keep you in the loop in case you found anything else that needs to be shared."

The Constable bids you good evening and continues with his patrol.

After dropping off Recette and Tear at Recette's Shop/home you retire to back to the Good Knight Inn to eat, bathe, and rest until tomorrow.

The next morning Ector is up with the sun to repair and clean his gear. It's tedious and time consuming, and he just didn't feel like doing it the night before.

Still, with a new day in sight the work seems to go fairly quick allow him to head out onto the street to do what he was planning to from the start. To go to each of the places in town he could find and look for any new or interesting meals they were offering. By the end he's sitting under the awning of a local business with his wooden plate stacked with food, sampling the local flavors while he watches the people pass, waiting for his friends to make an appearance.

After a good night of rest and going through your morning routines you find a group waiting for you at the front of the Good Knight Inn.

You easily recognize Gordo, Efrix, and Cyrilla; the three Merchants from the caravan you came to town with. They are engaged in conversation with a bespectacled gnome you haven't seen before.

His clothes don't seem made for rigorous outdoor work and sport numerous ink stains, and he has some sort of ledger tucked under one arm.

When he notices your arrival he pauses his conversation to greet you. "Ah yes, good day to you. Headman Underhill and Sergeant Azito told me you four would also be sitting in on the council meeting along with the good merchants. My name is Kellen 'Sharp-quill' Ningel, I have the pleasure of being the Headman's secretary and acting as scribe for meetings of the village council. I was asked to show you the way to the meeting hall."

Ector smiles at the new man, attempting to twist his scarred face into a pleasant, less alarming look though not necessarily succeeding. But also to hide the fact he wanted to yawn.

Planning was an important aspect of battle, cooking, and running a restaurant. But meetings? Just thinking about it made him want to yawn again. He didn't know what it was, but big meetings just made him sleepy immediately.

Not for the first time he considered trying to sneak off, but he was far to big to sneak very well. His usual excuses of needing to prep the next meal certainly wasn't going to fly now that nobody was expecting him to cook for them. Obviously he needed to learn how to be more sneaky in the future.

Sariel couldn't believe how sore she was even after a good night's rest. Even Ector's healing hadn't removed the lingering sense of the arrow in her chest, how close she came to death from one lucky shot. "Off to the meeting hall then, no point in wasting time. So much to discuss." Stretching out, she almost hadn't noticed the rabbit ears on her head was gone but a tail like a golden retriever had taken its place on her rear, even creating a hole through her clothes to fit. "One of these days I will wake up and something weird won't have happened in my sleep."

Célestina (Tina)

Tina had a good night at the Good Knight inn. This time, no dreams interrupted her sleep. No visions of herself and her prince at the Diamond Stairs. No memories of her parents both, gone on Crusade, surely dead by now. Perhaps, a little disappointingly, no portent that her Goddess was pleased at her admittance to the Delian Order, though a knight's ea

She slept a sound and dreamless sleep until the predawn birdsong woke her.

In the quiet moments before dawn where the sky was cobalt blue she woke, lit a candle, washed, dressed, and uttered her dawn prayers. She had a mind to consult Elder Abel as Recette had recommended. If the sword had any special blessings or boon upon it she wanted to know, to best use it against her foes. First, however, there was the mid-morning meeting of the village council that the good Constable had bid them attend.

"Well met, Sir Ningel," Tina says, trotting over in her armored boots to join the others, just in time. "We'll be pleased to give an update on the banditry situation. Lead the way, if you'd be so kind."

She mentally goes over the salient points: that the increase in goblin banditry was the result of the influence of a dragon on the Howling Hill tribe, and also the tribe's recent change in leadership, which might affect the village's future relations with the goblins. She looks around, making sure that nobody is within earshot, then motions for her companions to listen close. "I suggest we leave out any mention of the vault of the Delian Order," she whispers. "Outsiders pass through the village on their way to Tychestoile and I would spare the tomb further defilement at the hands of any would-be graverobbers. We can still tell the truth that knights of the order are buried there -- but I hope to omit anything that suggests treasure."

"Such polite adventurers. Much better than the mercenaries that sometimes wander in from that bar on the outskirts." Kellen happily leads you through the village until you reach the Village Hall, a central building used for many of the villages administration.

As follow the gnome scribe into the building you see a familiar canine shape sleeping near the front door. It's Bingo, Auld Macdonell's massive dog.
The dog's ears perk up as you pass by and he raises his head with a yawn to look at you and pant happily.

Kellen chuckles. "I see Farmer MacDonell is already here. As one of the oldest residents he has a seat on the council. We used to let Bingo come into meeting room but his snores kept interrupting the meetings."

Bingo gives an offended huff.

-------
Kellen escorts you and the merchants to a room with a large oval table in the center. There are a number of people sitting around it, some that you've already met and others that are unfamiliar. You easily recognize the Village Headman Longfellow Underhill, Watch Sergeant Antonio Azito, Elder Rickard Abel, the Wheelwright Winoa Wonderwheel, Your farmer friend Auld MacDonell, and Caroc the sour-faced farmer from the tavern last night.

As Kellen takes his place at a small desk near the table, Headman Underhill clears his throat. "Thank you for joining us, please take a seat. Once introductions are out of the way I can call this emergency meeting of the Village Council to order."

There are four other people at the table. A dwarf shopkeeper named Viglaf, a halfling woman named GristFlower who owned the Mill, an expensively dressed Kobold named Franc Deutschmark that was both the town treasurer as well as the local moneylender, and a Lizardfolk dressed in priestly vestments. (Anyone who wishes may make a knowledge religion check to recognize what deity he's a follower of.)

"And finally Brother Calycos, acting head priest of the village shrine while Father Elgar is on sabbatical." Headman Underhill finished. "Now that introductions are out of the way we can move on to the topic of this meeting. We have had major bandit activity recently from one of the local goblin tribes working in concert with a well organized brigand group that Sergeant Azito has been able to identify as the Redbrands. We have called this meeting in order to compile all the information available to us at this time to formulate a proper response. The Watch will share what they've been able to gather, and we wish to hear what these four adventurers who have been assisting through their own investigations."

The Shopkeeper Viglaf commented, "If what I heard from two wee lassies this morning is right then they have a lot of insight to share." Clearly word that you're responsible for the return of Recette and Tear has made the rounds around town, as you get a number of knowing smiles and approving nods.

(Feel free to address the meeting.)

Ector perks up at the sight of Bingo, sneaking away from the group to pet the dog.

"Ah, who is good dog?" Ector asks, sneaking the dog a piece of dried meat, "Bingo is good dog."

"Is okay, Ector probably get sent out here for same reason,"
He whispers conspiratorially before following after the others.

When the group is asked about providing information, Ector is quick to look at the others as though he knows they will be providing the insight. Mostly because he didn't want to do it himself. Unless they wanted to learn about cooking, which he was confidant they did not.

Besides, Celestina and Sariel would make it sound more impressive than he could. And Evan might even give an extremely concise version, which was also fun.

Célestina (Tina)

Tina briefly summarizes their findings: That there had been strife within the neighboring Goblin tribe, and one named Darax had usurped the mantle of leadership. Leading the tribe in worship of one "Black One" (which they strongly suspected was a dragon), this Darax had renamed the tribe the Howling Horde and worked together with local bandits named the Redbrands to engage in attacks on caravans. The dragon had learned the presence of a tomb of the Delian Order, ancient enemies of dragonkind, and sent its minions to defile it.

"The good news is it is only a wyrmling," Tina says. She displays the letter from Gravak to someone called "Glasstaff".

"Nevertheless, we could not ascertain the measure of such a foe nor the strength of its goblin horde," Tina admits. "My companions and I are headed for Tychestoile. Rather than attempt to confront the wyrmling here, I plan to bring evidence of the dragon's activities to the commander of the Garrison and beseech him or her to dispatch troops in response," she finishes.

Bingo gives a pleased woof at your attention before chowing down on the treat you have provided. His short tail thumps against the ground as you leave.

The Council asks to take a look at the rest of the documents you recovered from the tomb. Elder Able, Franc, and Brother Calycos huddle in one section of the table looking through papers, while Sergeant Azito stands up to give his report.

"While our intrepid friends here have uncovered and wiped out a lair of goblin brigands, removing a threat to the village and the roads, my officers have been doing research on their human allies. The documents recovered confirmed something I had suspected, these Goblins have been consorting with a bandit group that's recently emerged on the Garrison's Wanted Lists. The Redbrands are notorious for striking at under-defended settlements and trade roads for both plunder and captives. Their interference with merchants and their dealings with highly illegal slavery trade has made them a priority target for the Garrison, but despite uprooting several Redbrand operations they haven't been able to capture the groups mysterious leader." The watchman points to the letter Celestina had displayed. "While little is known about them, reports believe them to be a spellcaster of some sort, likely a human male; they do tend to use an alias in their dealings: GlassStaff. The fact that GlassStaff is leading the Redbrands dealing with these goblins and operating out of this area in person will almost certainly encourage a response from the Garrison. I already sent them a messenger bird with the details of the attack on the caravan, I will send another with an updated summary of what the adventurers discovered. With luck they'll have already sent some troops before your caravan leaves Hollowbrook."

Winoa Wonderwheel cuts in saying, "Just as well, my workers are doing their best to get those wagons road-worthy again but some parts just ain't fixable and need to be fully replaced. Frankly having some reliable fighters on hand until actual soldiers get here is a relief in my book. No offence to your lads Azito but you are kind of out of your depth with this."

The Watchman's shoulders drop and he sighs. "As much as it pains me to admit it, you have a point. We have basic combat training but if we had a large scale raid on any of the three settlements under our jurisdiction my twenty men would be hard pressed to handle a response."

"Then I'm afraid we are about to face a nightmare scenario!" Elder Abel's voice cuts through the chatter. The old man is clutching one of the documents fear written on his face. "Because if we don't do something fast within two weeks close to a hundred Goblinoid raiders will be descending on us."

The rest of the council turns to stare at the old man as he reads the document aloud. It seems the Howling horde has already bribed, bullied, or otherwise convinced several other goblinoid tribes into joining them for a large scale raid on Hollowbrook and two other local settlements, Wend and Strawford in the next few weeks.

The Headman's face is stricken, "Even if we got the information to them today, there's no way the Garrison could mobilize a large enough force to save the villages in time. I don't even know if we'd have enough time to evacuate."

Auld MacDonell is furiously scratching his chin in thought. "Those are big numbers to match even if its just goblins. Bunch of folks have basic militia training to back up the Watchmen but most have no actual combat experience. I can call in a favor or two and get some mercenary fighters but even with them and possibly the merchant guards, those are still some bad odds."

Things seem pretty bleak for the town.

Then the Priest, Brother Calycos speaks up. "Things may not be as hopeless as they seem. This Gravak seemed to think that this horde was far more fragile that it appears; that without this chief Darax watching over it and this dragon as a source of intimidation, that the whole thing would fall apart. Also that Darax has spread his loyal troops thin to keep the leaders of other tribes and potential rivals in line, leaving himself and the Black One lightly guarded. Someone brave and skilled enough could remove the head of this beast and the rest would fall apart."

The whole council turns to look at you four. Headman Underhill clears his throat. "You've done a great deal for us already but I'm afraid we must ask more of you. I know it wasn't what you originally planned but would you be willing to accept a job offer to save our village?"

"I would," Tina says.

She is shocked at the words that come out of her mouth. She has just agreed to go on what might well be a suicide mission to kill a dragon and its pet goblin chief. Maybe it is a sense of destiny that grips her, a feeling that great deeds are about to be wrought. Maybe, maybe this is why a daughter of Talestria was set here, far east, to seek her fortune.

She speaks again, seized by some strange impulse:

"One might be tempted to refuse, of course. To leave the village to its grim fate and continue to Tychestoile. But if I do so, I will be riding to the Wheel of Fortune on wagon-wheels mended and built by the hands of those I had consigned to death, having slept in beds they made, with their food in my belly, and that would be utterly unconscionable in the eyes of gods and mortals."

She nods at Winoa Wonderwheel, Elder Abel, the Watch Sergeant, and the other elders of the council in turn.

"As guests, we have received your gracious hospitality, even as you are under threat from goblins and brigands and have every right to mistrust passing strangers. Now, it is only right that we too raise swords and defend the house of the hosts who offered us shelter. Besides," and now she smiles, "We might not be great heroes or champions, but I think nobody here enjoys leaving innocents to the sword."

Steadfast Ector has already signed up without being asked, goddess bless him.

She turns to her companions. "If we are to go, we should set out. As soon as possible." Tina looks at the council. At Brother Calycos, specifically. "Do you know of where Darax would be lurking? I would hazard a guess that he is likely at the main goblinoid settlement. The village of what was later renamed the Howling Hills tribe. But perhaps you have more accurate information."

Gristflower chucked, "Looks like Auld has found another one to dangle in front of his girls."
Viglaf smiles back, "He did the same to your Nephew but I haven't heard any complaints."

MacDonell glares at the other two. "Quit your gossiping."

You can see palpable relief from various council members. Celestina's words bolstering spirits that were wavering.

"I think we can piece together the location from some of the documents here." Brother Calycos says. "Give me and Elder Abel some time to confer, he knows the area far better than I, and we should be able to pin down where they are hiding."

The Elder nods. "Yes once the meeting is finished we should be able to give you a destination. I was meaning to speak to you afterwards on other matters anyways." He meets Celestina's eyes and then meaningfully looks at Celestina's new sword. He then turns his attention back to the documents.

Franc the Kobold treasurer clears his throat to get your attention. "While I am wholeheartedly grateful that these adventurers are willing to risk themselves in our defense I still wish to state that there will be a monetary compensation for this undoubtedly dangerous undertaking. Towns like ours are provided an emergency fund in case of disasters or threats requiring the hire of adventurers, that the major banks of the Golden Wheel are obligated to reimburse, so you need not fear bankrupting us. If you can bring an end to this goblin threat, you'll collectively receive five hundred gold pieces. Plus the right to any loot or salvage found in the performance of the task. That should be agreeable I should think."

The Village Headman nods. "I can't properly express how relieved I am that your willing to do this for us. Anything you feel you need to succeed we will do our best to provide you."

You do not recognize the symbol of the priest's deity, which isn't too unusual as the Golden Wheel has exposure to so many cultures that its nearly impossible to know every deity worshiped within its borders without a reference guide. Its why multi-faith shrines and temples are common in the region, there simply isn't enough money and space for every god to have their own.

The holy symbol the Lizard Priest wears around his neck depicts a reptilian head with prominent jaws and teeth wearing a headdress like those of rulers in certain southern nations.

You do get the impression its not a deity commonly worshiped in the area, smaller villages like this tend to give more attention to nature and harvest deities.
