Terminator: Dark Fate

Post by Darrin Kelley »

This film was made as James Cameron's last word on the Terminator franchise. And some people have criticized it for being political. But I just watched this movie. And I didn't find it overly so.

It was a direct sequel to Terminator 2: Judgement Day. John Conner was killed by a remaining Terminator after they thought Skynet was finished. The Terminator was pretty much Skynet's last gasp of revenge.

The rest of the movie is dedicated to a new threat that created Terminators called Legion. And Legion sent back new age Terminators to take out the woman who represented its biggest threat. Someone who established the same philosophies of resistance as John Conner was originally credited with creating to oppose Skynet.

I liked this movie. It felt like a good spiritual successor to the Terminator series. And it set up Sarah Conner with a new future as the woman's mentor. Honoring John's memory by continuing the fight against the new threat of Legion.

Nine times out of ten, 'political' means 'there's a woman or person of colour in it'. Especially if the women aren't depicted according to some really weird standards of sexiness.

The depiction of the Border Patrol in this movie was pretty neutral. They were treated as a Terminator's pawns that were being manipulated from within. The Border Patrol was not depicted as villains. But as victims of the Terminator. Like everybody else.

As for the successor to John Conner being Mexican? That's always been a part of the Terminator franchise. Back in Terminator 2, the people who aided Sarah and guarded her arsenal were Mexican. This was simply a big nod to part of the history of the Terminator franchise. There was no overt political agenda at all.

What I saw was a movie that gave heavy reverence to the legacy of the rest of the franchise.

Watch the Dark Fate screen rant 'Pitch Meeting' episode on YouTube, it points out some of the issues people had with the movie in a humourous manner.

I have. I didn't find them funny.

What I saw was a couple of people who thought they were funny raining contempt down on the movie. Expressing pure hatred for it. And frankly, I don't regard people promoting hate for something as valid criticism.

Please do not refer me to that sort of hate porn again.
