Unless going with professional wrestlers, the only name that I can think of is Jaime Pressly

She's only 5'7" / 137 lbs., but Ronda Rousey gets my vote for Shulkie. If Peter Jackson can make the 6'1" John Rhys-Davies into a convincing dwarven warrior, then Marvel Studios can make "Rowdy" Ronda Rousey into an emerald Amazon.

She's not the greatest actress — she was more than a bit wooden in her few quiet drama scenes in Expendables 3 — but that can be fixed with the right director and a good script. God knows she won't need much help preparing for the fisticuffs! ;)

Anyone willing to pay acting classes for Annie Thorisdottir?

Or for Michelle Levin?

As for Ronda, certainly would be better as She-Hulk than as Captain Marvel like I have seen some people suggesting back when they were still casting that role

Is that a real policy? I mean, Marvel's all "YAY LOOK AT US FOR BEING SO INCLUSIVE!" and has been for years... but look at how Magik & Emma Frost still dress.

Also... yay, muscular ladies!!!

Rhonda isn't especially attractive by sexy lady standards... except she could detonate my thighbone with one kick, which puts her into my "Ultra-Goddess" list, even if she falls apart mentally after every loss (seriously- you're a PRO FIGHTER!! Suck it up!).

Pressly is hot and toned (though she's of course way too old nowadays), but I'm talking like, biceps and power-thighs. That's why I added "talented" to the "actresses" bit- plenty of women can LOOK the part, but not all of them can be the central part of a movie. Some pro wrestling women, like Beth Phoenix, can be both very muscular and VERY pretty in the face; Chyna, while I LOVED her body, still looked odd above the neckline. Fitness Models more or less define themselves by that archetype, building toned muscle and then bolting-on implants for the feminine look. Gina Carano at least has SOME props as an MMA Washout, and was BEYOND gorgeous (every time she does that "lip bite" thing, I pass out for six hours) and is perfect for super-fighters, but even she is just "passable" as an actress.

Now, if you don't CARE about the acting skill, then your options open way up.

Oh, that's what you meant. Well, Ares meant that he didn't want threads to be ENTIRELY about fanservice. As mine is also about opinionated ranting on comic book characters & creative teams, then it's okay. He gave me carte blanche to do as I'd always been doing... the fool.

Oh, I also read a Steve Gerber interview in the first Howard the Duck collection- quite interesting stuff. He comes off as wildly pretentious about his place in the world, but it was a good look at the 1970s of comics. It's easily forgotten that at this point, Comic Book Nerds were an UNUSUAL thing in the industry- the first generation of writers who'd grown up as comic book fans were around (Roy Thomas, etc.), but Gerber is openly hostile to them. He talks about how the industry is built around entertaining children, and then talks about the odd adult fans. "The adults who are fans of comics tend to also be the kind who turn out to be Trekkies and Satanists", he says. He points out that while he's not implying that HE isn't odd, he's found most adult fans to be very odd individuals with a lot of weirdness around them.

The Howard book isn't really my kinda thing, but I can absolutely see how big that would have been in the 1970s- a book that sarcastic about comic book tropes, martial arts films (Howard masters "Quack-Fu" within a few minutes), superheroics (the upcoming "Band of the Bland" debut there) and more must have been seen as EXCEPTIONALLY weird back in the day. Now, there's like ten or eleven books like that. Gerber, for all his oddities, was absolutely an influential figure.

The Band of the Bland

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE BAND OF THE BLAND:
-Five supervillains found by Doctor Angst, they're a band of deliberately-goofy Morts with wacky concepts and powers. Angst sends them to murder Howard the Duck, hoping that it would springboard them to fame & success as villains, but they were defeated by Howard and The Defenders within the space of a panel or two. The reappeared years later in Gerber's She-Hulk run, similarly being silly, but being upended by Shulkie and her own squad of heroes (including Howard & Terror, Inc.).

Black Hole

BLACK HOLE (Morton Kribbee)

First Appearance: Marvel Treasury Edition #12 (Jan. 1976)
Role: Odd Powered Guy
Group Affiliations: The Band of the Bland
PL 13 (129)
STRENGTH
1 STAMINA 2 AGILITY 2
FIGHTING 4 DEXTERITY 0
INTELLIGENCE 0 AWARENESS 0 PRESENCE 0

Skills:
Expertise (Handball) 4 (+5) -- Uses Agility

Advantages:
Ranged Attack 2

Powers:
"Black Hole in Chest"
Move Object 13 (Extras: Area- 60ft. Cone) (Flaws: Limited to Towards Himself) Linked to Movement 1 (Dimensional Travel) (Extras: Portal +2) [30]
"Singularity Field" Affliction 12 (Fort; Impaired/Disabled Powers/Transformed to Powerless) (Extras: Area- 30ft. Burst, Reaction +3) [70]

Offense:
Unarmed +4 (+1 Damage, DC 16)
Sucking Stuff In +13 (+13 Move Object)
Initiative +0

Defenses:
Dodge +4 (DC 14), Parry +4 (DC 14), Toughness +2, Fortitude +3, Will +2

Complications:
Addiction (Sucking In Stuff)- Kribbee enjoys the feeling he gets from sucking in larger and larger objects.
Weakness (Holding Open His Hole)- If someone holds open Morton's hole, he will be unable to prevent sucking in enough objects to render him obese and helpless.

Total: Abilities: 18 / Skills: 8--4 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 100 / Defenses: 5 (129)

-Martin Kribbee got a piece of black dwarf star (sure, why not) stuck in his breastbone, and gained the ability to "suck in" matter as a result. He tried to suck in The Hulk, but Howard the Duck's girlfriend Beverly tricked him into sucking HIMSELF in instead. He is addicted to sucking things in, but was tricked later by She-Hulk into sucking in so much stuff that it made him helpless. Everything about him is so silly that you can't describe it with a straight face, which is too bad, because the costume isn't that awful.

-He's PL 13 with that one effect (basically Move Object Linked to Dimensional Travel, essentially moving people involuntarily into his portal), and has a PL 12 Singularity Field that nullifies superhuman powers (Marvel's Appendix to the Handbook doesn't include this, but ComicVine does). So he can be freakishly dangerous, but is generally a big moron that can be easily fooled or trumped using his Weakness.

-The Spanker was Headmaster of an exclusive preparatory academy, fired for administering excessive corporal punishment. His obsession with spankings led him to become a supervillain. In his second appearance, he was spanked by Louise Mason, who herself was annoyed at having been Spanked. He's PL 6 when wacking people on the butt, but is even worse otherwise.

Responsibility (Failure)- Sitting Bullseye was discovered, tattooed and chased out of the Indian Reservation where he was attempting to go undercover.

Total: Abilities: 32 / Skills: 6--3 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 6 (44)

-Sitting Bullseye was investigating an Indian Reservation for illegal alcohol production, but was found out (he was undercover), had a bullseye tattooed on his chest, and run out of town. He was fired from the CIA as a result, and joined Dr. Angst's team. I can't imagine he's that good at what he does (he was pummelled by a retired Golden Age hero in his second fight), but PL 5 is alright.

Tillie the Hun

TILLIE THE HUN (Matilda von Tromp)

First Appearance: Marvel Treasury Edition #12 (Jan. 1976)
Role: Powerhouse Chick, Joke Villain
Group Affiliations: The Band of the Bland
PL 8 (68)

FIGHTING 6 DEXTERITY 2
INTELLIGENCE 0 AWARENESS 0 PRESENCE 0

Skills:
Expertise (Gym Instructor) 4 (+4)

Strength-Damage +2 (Feats: Split) (Extras: Penetrating 2) (5 points)

Offense:

Weapons +6 (+10 Damage, DC 25)
Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +6 (DC 16), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +8, Fortitude +8, Will +2

Complications:
Responsibility (Vow)- Tillie vows to only marry a man if he can defeat her in battle.

Total: Abilities: 52 / Skills: 10--5 / Advantages: 2 / Powers: 3 / Defenses: 6 (68)

-Tillie the Hun is a big, burly chick with the looks of an Opera-singing Valkyrie and some mean-looking weapons that can do mega-damage. Like Red Sonja, she vows to only marry the man who can defeat her in combat, which worked in her favor, because when she fought The Hulk, he was afraid to fight too hard, lest he actually win!

-Despite being a goofy character, Tillie is definitely a Powerhouse enough to hold her own against either Hulk (The or She) in a fistfight. She-Hulk only defeated her after a fairly-protracted battle, which fits a PL 8 (PL 7 defensively) woman going against a PL 10-11 type.

Complications:
Motivation (Greed)- Doctor Angst formed The Band of the Bland to assassinate Howard the Duck for cash.

Total: Abilities: 42 / Skills: 8--4 / Advantages: 1 / Powers: 35 / Defenses: 7 (44)

-Doctor Angst is a low-level magician who formed The Band of the Bland to make him some money- he lied to them and told them that he had enhanced their powers, and sent them to kill Howard the Duck for money. Later, he schemed to destroy the universe for some reason, forcing a number of alternate realities together in The Great Squish. He's more of a schemer than a fighter, but summoned a Drill once, that allowed him to break out of prison.

-She-Hulk's goofy series of course at some point needed a girl version of The Abomination, so they went FULL-BORE with it, making The Abominatrix the victim of an experiment to cure PMS via gamma radiation (really). This skirt-wearing, blonde-haired Abomination-lookalike fought She-Hulk several times in her first run, but hasn't reappeared since. She was basically a lower-level version of The Abomination in every way, but was enough to fight Shulkie pretty well for a couple fights in a row, but eventually lost, despite the assistance of Captain Rectitude.

Black Hole feels like a ripoff of the Kinnikuman character of the same name, who could suck people into the hole in his head, but I doubt anyone outside Japan knew of him, unless they saw him in one of those old pink MUSCLE toys.
