What the f--k is happening in this pic? I'm assuming Rick is holding the wine bottle and the glowy starry profile face is suppossed to be Captain Mar-Vell Junior or some such. But what happened to Marlow's face, and when did she become a giantess? It's not that she's so much taller than Rick, it's that the size of her head is noticably larger than his AND her face is too large a percentage of her head.

Seriously, she's from Las Vega, was an aerobics and swimming instructor, and did a stint in the soft-core porn industry. If she also worked as a stripper at some point, it would be perfectly in keeping with her character.
I am a fan of character consistency. XD

The dress also reminds me a bit of the one from the November Rain music video- kicky, leg-baring, boobalicious wedding dresses were kind of "in" during the 1990s at one point, if only for celeb-types.

And yeah, I noticed the new ROM comic, which seems to just create a whole new story around the character (all of the stuff about Rom's world is a Marvel creative property- only the name & look are Hasbro's). I think he's even interacting with Transformers & G.I. Joe. I'm not sure why they think Rom is still a valuable enough property, but they might just be trying to make him seem bigger so that Marvel/Disney will shell out money to get him back or whatever. Rom is still like 79995/80000 of the "things I care about", so it never mattered to me :).

The Warbound

Post by Jabroniville »

THE HULK'S WARBOUND:
-Planet Hulk is really the only time I've ever given much of a crap over Bruce Banner and his little world. His supporting cast (like "Thunderbolt" Ross and Betty Banner) seemed generic and thrown-together, his main villains are either silly-looking (The Leader) or forgettable (The Abomination isn't any more notable than any OTHER Powerhouse Villain). The character is so simple at it's core (genius trapped in giant monster that wants to be left alone) that I can't really get into any of his stories, and 99% of his fights are ended by him getting angrier and thus stronger, to the point where "Winning Fights" is his power (it's basically what Ares hated about Superman winning fights in JLU). But Planet Hulk was pretty sweet- dude gets grabbed by The Illuminati group of Iron Man, Mr. Fantastic, Black Bolt, Namor (who protested) and Professor X, then shot into space where he can't hurt anyone. He was SUPPOSED to land on an uninhabited world, but a weird Black Hole sucked him up, and he ended up a slave on a dictator-led planet called Sakaar. There, he led a Slave Rebellion against the Red King, forged a great stable of powerhouse characters, married a hot pale chick, and kicked ass. Then the planet was blown-up, and his new wife killed, by the spaceship that brought him there.

Hulk was PISSED.

So he gathers his Warbound stable up and heads to Earth to get his revenge. As "The Green Scar", he's angrier than he's ever been, but it's a calm, insane anger that makes him super kill-y. He beats the CRAP out of Black Bolt (really a Skrull in disguise, but he copied the big dude's powers), taking a full-on Scream in the process, then starts kicking Earth hero ass. He & his stable wipe out The Avengers, The Fantastic Four, The X-Men and others, ending with some climactic fights against The Sentry and stuff. It crossed over into EVERYTHING, which kind of sucked, as it was just "Guys Fighting" to impress Battleboard Fans or something like that, and there wasn't much to most of it. But hey- fights.

The story kinda petered out in the end to me, as all the fights kinda blended together, and I've never been a fan of John Romita Jr.'s "Block-O People Art". The Warbound and Planet Hulk stuff is still pretty good, however. Sadly, the Warbound themselves, despite being a very solid, interesting supporting cast, have gone on to do almost literally nothing since the story's end- the next writers just kinda plopped them somewhere and then never used them.

-Caiera didn't survive Planet Hulk, but she was an uber-powerful Oldstrong (much better than Hiroim) who was able to EQUAL the "Green Scar" Hulk in combat, and eventually fell for him and sorta bore his child (that of course got super-aged to an adult because THIS IS COMICS and no children ever get to stay kids for long). She's basically a hyper-elite Hiroim who's a bit less philosophical, but is VERY accurate with her powers. PL 13 is seriously getting up there in raw talent.

-Korg was part of a brilliant idea on the part of Greg Pak- in Thor's debut all those years ago, he ended up fighting a bunch of invading Rock Men that we basically never saw again, since 1960s Marvel & DC were ALL ABOUT random space aliens showing up to invade Earth with a small group of guys, then fleeing in terror from a burly Super-Hero. And it turns out that, decades later, one of those very same invaders was now a gladiator, trapped on Sakaar, helping The Hulk. Korg was Hulk's "Number Two" during most of his adventures on Sakaar, being a level-headed, pragmatic type who knew the lay of the land and all that went on on the planet, as well as being among the friendliest (if a bit stand-offish), non-murderous types. He was usually a calming influence and rather likeable, and an oddly-close comparison to old Hulk foe The Thing. Tragically, he never went against Ben Grimm, in what would have been the most obvious fight of World War Hulk- hell, Ben could've finally gotten a WIN, for once!

-As a lieutenant-type, Korg is resolute and powerful, nearly impossible to injure, but a bit slower than his comrades due to his sheer size and weight. I'd've liked to see him go up against The Thing- their power-sets are so equal, and their PL's the same.

The Warbound were an interesting group, it's too bad they weren't utilized properly after World War Hulk. Personally, I think they should have been given a spaceship as they would have a made an interesting "exploring/adventuring through space" group.

I'm wanting to think Marlo's dress was at least somewhat based on Mary Jane's. I seem to recall Marlo seeing some of the Parker's wedding pictures based on Peter's notoriety at taking Spider-Man pictures and just gave it a Vegas twist

"[It] was my intention that Jarella was not really dead. Being an alien species, what appeared to be death to us was in fact a step in what was to be her metamorphosis into a higher power. I never got a chance to bring her back before I left the title, and thus she’s remained dead."

Defenses:
Dodge +10 (DC 20), Parry +9 (DC 19), Toughness +4, Fortitude +5, Will +5

Complications:
Responsibility (K'ai)- Jarella is a member of the K'ai royalty, and must defend it from the warthog-like aggressors of that world.
Relationship (The Hulk)- The two fall in love quickly, and soon marry. Jarella accepts all parts of her husband- Banner's mind, the Hulk's mind, and even Banner's body.

Total: Abilities: 56 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 9 (82)

-Now here's a character I've always been curious about, but for some reason have never gotten around to statting- Jarella, one of the Hulk's random late girlfriends. She was created by guest writer Harlan Ellison, then eventually brought back as a recurring character- she was classic Sci-Fi- a Warrior Queen combined with Green-Skinned Space Babe. She was the Princess of the sub-atomic world of K'ai, a primitive-looking world that still mixed laser-swords and stuff, kinda like He-Man and Thundarr the Barbarian. Her people are attacked by evil warthog-monsters, and the Hulk suddenly arives to defend them. He quickly falls in love with the green-skinned, attractive, gentle Jarella, and soon the Banner Personality takes control, and the two fall in love (Remember: Ideal Alpha Male). Eventually, the two are sent back to Earth for a while, but Jarella eventually dies saving a child from a collapsing wall.

-The Hulk's grief is outstanding, and the outpouring from fans was as well- the character had died only five years after her introduction, but apparently she really appealed to people (green skin plus blonde hair PLUS Sword Chick? I can only imagine!). Curiously, the writer who killed her (Len Wein) intended to bring her back as a "higher form of life", but was taken off the book before he could do so, meaning the character pretty much exists only in legend- as a fan, I've only barely heard of her, and usually only as part of a "Betty and Caiera and..." group of the Hulk's exes. As the character's been dead for over forty years, I think the chances of her resurrection are pretty slim, but hey- you never know when the next writer is gonna read a collected edition of her appearances and suddenly JARELLA is back from the dead, alongside all these other Hulk-people.
I got the original Jarella comic as part of a send away thing for this Christmas catalogue back in 5th or 6th grade. Got several old reprints. I was really into that comic in particular as it was a pretty good Hulk yarn and was written by Harlan Ellison (who I knew was a writer but I was more aware of him yelling at clouds on a weekly basis on Sci-Fi Buzz).

I really liked the Jarella character too and thought she was just a one off until years later when I had heard she was killed off some time later. She did get a nice return during that Chaos War thing (but who didn't?) and Banner's mother officially approved of her over Betty which I got a chuckle out of.

Damndest thing though.....somehow somewhere that issue (as well as an X-Men issue where they're in the Savage Land fighting mutates and Magneto and Lorelei and such) disappeared from my collection. I had it one week. I remember seeing it. Then one day it was just gone. The only thing I can figure is that one of my stepson's friends must have swiped it when they were over. I hate when things like that happen, but I'll probably come across those issues some time down the road, so que sera sera

Defenses:
Dodge +12 (DC 22), Parry +12 (DC 22), Toughness +10 (+3 Impervious), Fortitude +9, Will +8

Complications:
Relationship (Miek)- Ewwwwwwwww......
Responsibility (Younglings- Imperial & Native)- No-Name is a surprisingly-caring mother, and is easily the most protective of The Warbound. Knowing that Miek was responsible for the death of younglings drove her into a homicidal rage.
Responsibility (The Hulk, Warbound)

Total: Abilities: 76 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 66 / Defenses: 16 (187)

-Having a GOOD Brood creature for once was actually a really original idea in Planet Hulk. Initially showing up as just "Two of Six" Brood creatures that attacked Hulk's Warbound during Gladatorial training, she survived to become one of the last seven contenders, and allied with the group out of necessity. Eventually, with the psychic link between her and all other Brood broken, she gained sympathy for others, the ability to mourn, even regret; things that were impossible to imagine in a Brood beforehand. Hell, when Sakaar blew up, No-Name had tears in her eyes as she failed to protect all the children she was PLAYING WITH. That's pretty astounding. I mean, this isn't like Skrulls, who have 900 super-heroic examples at this point. These are Brood Sleazoids, among the most vile races in the universe.

-And then there was the near sex-scene she had with Miek. *shudder* No-Name briefly took him as a lover (AAAAAAAAIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEE), but viciously turned on him when it turned out that he was responsible for the destructions of Sakaar. She was rendered infertile by Earth's "Insect Hive Mind" (apparently all insects use it), and her freak-babies with Miek were all killed by her after they proved to be insane, rampaging monsters, but she hasn't done anything in a long time.

-No-Name is especially powerful for a Brood Warrior who hasn't attained Queenship. She hasn't transformed others into Brood (at least, she never did it, even when it would've made total sense to gain powerful allies) and she's lost any of the Psychic Link benefits, but she's a PL 11 warrior now, pairing up tremendous physical strength and accuracy, when most Brood creatures are PL 6-8 Minions the X-Men just wade through with ease. No-Name has the ability to Implant Brood Eggs, which is a fun little thing to stat out. Basically, she can transform living beings to Broodlings, which goes into effect after a matter of days (Disease Extra), it's Permanent in Duration, but she has to really grapple someone to do it, and obviously has a limited number of eggs. It's an expensive damn ability, but most of the Warbound don't fit exact PL caps anyways.

Complications:
Obsession (Making "Them" Pay)- Miek was beaten for most of his life, and is now the leader of a dying race with no hope, and this has left him a bit paranoid and vengeful. EVERYONE must suffer.
Obsession (He Likes Him When He's Angry)- Miek's hatefulness means that he has a vested interest in keeping the Hulk in a state of warfare. This means that he's willing to do ANYTHING (including committing planetary genocide) to make Hulk mad.
Responsibility (The Hulk, Warbound)

Total: Abilities: 62 / Skills: 34--17 / Advantages: 26 / Powers: 50 / Defenses: 14 (169)

-Miek started off as a very sympathetic, weak, human-level "Native" of Sakaar, a four-armed bug man who was about five feet tall and sneaky as hell. He had entertaining dialogue (he spoke funny, added "-ing" as a suffix when non-grammatically correct) and was the team's best strategist/lucky fighter. Then, partway through the story, he went through a metamorphosis, becoming one of the rare (and only, by that time) "King" Native, finally gaining the power to match the other big guns of the team. It was then that his strategizing took a dark turn, as his obsession with making people pay (as his race was now doomed to extinction by the death of their last Queen) resulted in him allowing the Warp Core Breach that wiped out Crown City's population (and the Hulk's new wife, Caiera), leading to World War Hulk. Upon discovering this, his team savagely beat him, and placed him in the Negative Zone Prison.

-Miek was broken out by the Chaos King, Amatsu Mikaboshi, and pledged allegiance to the destructive God. Though the villains was beaten, Miek ended up altered into an asexually-reproducing, egg-laying creature. However, his hatchlings soon died. He then captured the Hulk and laid eggs in his chest, hoping that they would thrive (they hadn't when implanted into refugee Sakaarians)- he then sent a mind-controlled Hulk against his Warbound allies. The Hulk eventually broke free (thanks to his rage), but his son Skaar prevented him from killing the hatchlings, and promised to protect them. Miek then tried to control Skaar into killing the Hulk, but Hulk ripped off another of his arms and punched him through a volcano- he possibly fell to his death, as he hasn't been seen in ages.

-Miek is a VERY weird build to look at, actually. See, VERY few "Strong Guy" fighters ever end up with that many Combat Advantages, but that's kind of Miek's thing, since he used to be so weak. He lacks alot of the raw power of the others (without his Spear, he doesn't make PL 11 caps at all), but makes up for it with his various grappling, aiding, sundering, blocking and other cunning tricks that are unusual in a creature so large. His "Chemming" works kinda weird, as it's a pheromonal-emotion detector, letting him moderately read the emotions of regular beings, and communicate near-fully with his fellow Native/Hivelings. If he REALLY pushes it (Extra Effort), he can communicate with the others, but he only did that once. I was thinking about adding a limit because he has to smell things, but really, anything that has a brain tends to have a smell, so it should cost about the same regardless. Plus it's now in regular "Communication" anyways.

One of the coolest moments in WWH for me was when the illuminati tried to convince Johnny Blaze to use the Ghost Rider against Hulk. Blaze warned them that doing so was dangerous as hell, akin to throwing a lit blowtorch into an tank of gasoline.

But he did it anyways and went toe to toe with old jade jaws. He wasn't doing as well because he was holding back and strange convinced him he had to let go and let the Rider have at it. HE does so and nearly flattens the hulk in a massive fiery conflagration.

But strange realizes the error as rider and hulk have a staredown and then the rider leaves. Because as Strange says the Rider only goes after those who are guilty. And the hulk had every right to be mad.

also you didn't mention the ghost.
How do heels make her head too big for her body?

And what ghost? I specifically mention the floating head on the top left - Captain Mar-Vell Jr.
