Re: Jab's Builds! (Shooting Star! Red Wolf! Firebird!)

I've always liked Pym, even his time as Wasp in the Mighty Avengers was a fun read for me (though Ultimate Pym can go die in a fire for all eternity). That being said, writer's misunderstanding of the "Pym slap" moment and their refusal to stop referencing it seems to have hurt the character too much. Part of me was hoping that with the Ant-man movie maybe we'd get some Pym teaming up with Scott Lang stories, but unfortunately it didn't happen.

Marvel- The Letter "A":

-It's funny how long I put off the "A" section. Bitterness over it always being first alphabetically? The sheer number of these guys (less, now that I moved the Greek Gods to their own set)? In any case, there's not as many big names as you'd think. Ant-Man, Apocalypse, Adam Warlock, Archangel, Abomination and Absorbing Man... kinda slim pickin's.

-The Letter "A" is as old as it gets, going back to Ancient Greece. It's of course the first letter of the alphabet, and the third most commonly used (after E & T). It has multiple pronunciations, as well- more than most vowels, even.

-Avalanche is one of the most terrible of the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants/Freedom Force, being an awesome name wrapped in a guy with the personality of a brick. Unsurpsringly, he's the first guy to go down in most of their fights, and doesn't do much on his own either. While most of his team had distinctive looks or concepts, he was just some guy in a purple outfit and a dumb helmet, showing no unique personality traits or anything. When Fred Friggin' Dukes shows more character than you, you know you suck.

-Avalanche debuted with the Mystique incarnation of the Brotherhood, in the early "Claremont Years". Appearing only as a background guy, Claremont never bothered to showcase more of him, and he'd just kind of "be there" when they switched over to government operations as "Freedom Force". Despite his lame nature, he actually got to survive- the later years of the team saw them lose Stonewall, Super-Sabre and Crimson Commando. It was his somewhat-selfish decision to "bug out" on their mission in Iraq, leaving The Blob & Pyro to the mercies of the Iraqi Army once their mission there went south. Like most of the earlier X-Villains, Avalanche sat out most of the 1990s, reappearing in modern times in a few issues here and there- he was defeated by Rahne Sinclair, sans-powers, when she returned to The New Mutants, and later opened a bar after giving up super-villainy. He still acts as a trouble-maker, getting involved in some Pro-Mutant Riots, but is later believed killed in the opening arc of The Uncanny Avengers, being mind-controlled by The Red Skull to make mutants look bad by engaging in openly terroristic acts.

-Avalanche is thus one of a handful of comic book characters done MUCH better in Animated form. The X-Men Evolution version actually saved him from the heap of nobody characters, producing a new real name and origin, and making him more of a bad-boy misfit for sweet innocent Kitty Pryde to make good. A bit of a cliche at times, but I liked how "Lance" kept getting dragged back to the side of evil, and having him as the Rival School Leader gave him a much more interesting character type than the usual "Tortured Bad Boy". Things may have worked out if that show got an extra season or two, but as it stands, Avalanche is still a Jobber.

-Avalanche is a good Area-Effect guy, but has few Skills, almost no Advantages, and a fairly limited batch of Trip and Blast-type powers, most of which doing little damage to human beings, but dependent on hitting the buildings and streets behind and beneath them. It's much more wide-ranged than most Powerhouse builds' "Groundstrike" Powers (which is where these are derived from- it goes the Extra Condition route and adds the Hindered & Vulnerable combos together to really screw up your offense & defense simultaneously), but aside from a PL 8-ish Blast, he's got little else to dish out. He's sort of a PL 8 Blaster and PL 10 Area Tripper, and that's it.

Responsibility (Assassin)- Amun comes from a long line of Egyptian assassins.

Total: Abilities: 64 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 10 (94)

-Amun is an Egyptian assassin (of course themed to Ancient Egypt) hired by some enemies of Arana in order to kill her. He & Arana deduce each other's identities (he recognizes a tattoo), but she nearly strangles him after one of their ongoing fights. Later, she saves his life and he promises to not hunt her any longer. A completely-generic Assassin Build, he can't even beat a rookie teenage superhero, so he's obviously not that great. Also, he stole Jared "Fate" Stevens's gear.

The Ani-Men

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE ANI-MEN I-V
Created By:
Wally Wood & Bob Powell
First Appearance: Daredevil #10 (Oct. 1965)
Role: Jobber Villains, Running Gag

-The original Ani-Men were a gang put together by Abner "The Organizer" Jones, a mayoral candidate who used them to discredit the current administration. Daredevil defeats them, but later, Ape-Man, Bird-Man & Cat-Man formed their own group, The Unholy Three, and worked with The Exterminator. Poor Frog-Man was left to wither on the vine, I guess. The team were reunited and empowered by Count Nefaria, who added a woman named Dragonfly. They're captured by The X-Men, and are killed (sans Dragonfly) in their second adventure, being blown up by The Spymaster (who'd intended for Tony Stark to be hit).

-The Exterminator, now called Death-Stalker and wanting to capture Matt Murdock, recruits a NEW team of Ani-Men, using just Cat, Bird & Ape-Man. Bird-Man II is captured by Black Widow, but his partners are killed by Death-Stalker at the end of the mission. Bird-Man would himself later be victimized by The Scourge of the Underworld in the Bar With No Name. A third group appears during the Secret Wars crossover, getting into stuff while all the good heroes are on Battleworld. Ape, Bird & Frog-Man use the equipment of the originals, and later join Hammerhead's gang during The Civil War.

-A fourth group are some of The New Men (created by The High Evolutionary)- Buzzard, Crushtacean, Flying Fox, Komodo & Spinneret. They interact with Ben Reilly during The Clone Saga, but never appear again. A FIFTH group appears, comprised of even sillier cast members Giraffe-Man, Great Horned Owl-Man, Pig-Man & Rabbit-Woman, and act as eco-terrorists fighting against those who transgress against the animal kingdom- The Great Lakes Avengers are called in to the case, but the ACTUAL Avengers are called and tell the GLA to sit this one out so they won't get hurt.

-This all adds up to make them a running gag with zero credibility. Perfect for goofy Jobbers not meant to be taken seriously. The current Ani-Men likely have the same stats as the simplistic, weak first and second versions (who also don't differentiate amongst each other enough to gain different stats). So essentially, there is Bird-Man I-III, Cat-Man I-III, Ape-Man I-III, Frog-Man I-II, and the rest are originals.

-Bird-Man is pretty terrible- just a PL 5-on-offense loser in a Flying Costume- even BOOMSLANG would kick this guy's ass! He dies alongside the others thanks to the Spymaster.

-The second Bird-Man is basically exactly like the first. Bird-Man's a PL 6 loser who tangled with DD and the Black Widow once, and that was it- PURE Jobberdom at it's finest here, as he's just a regular guy in pretty good shape who wears a silly animal costume. When he's resurrected by the Hood (along the other Scourge victims), he gains the following:

Strength 6 [8]
Stamina 5 [4]
Skills 2: Perception 7 (+7) [1]
"Bird Vision" Senses 3 (Ultra, Low-Light & Extended Vision) [3]
Flight 5 (60 mph) (Flaws: Winged) [5]

-This makes him a much better, but still crappy, PL 7 (77) fighter. During one story, he had similar enhancements given to him by Count Nefaria.

-Another Ani-Man, Cat-Man II was killed (along with Ape-Man) by the Death-Stalker, the villain who hired them. Like Bird-Man, he sucks and is PL 6, but he's a bit more balanced overall with his Claws and Enhanced Agility (how DO you make someone more agile with a costume, anyhow? You'd figure EVERY hero would own one of those if freaking CAT-MAN could afford one. Maybe they're all forced to wear stupid kitten-heads, so nobody wants to wear one).

-Ape-Man shockingly also sucks- he's your everyday Big Dumb Thug archetype, amped up with Gorilla-level strength. Doesn't stop him from being a PL 6 loser, though. Now, doing +7 damage normally is actually kind of threatening to a Daredevil-level guy, but his low accuracy hampers him considerably, and it's no wonder he only lasted one single story arc. And dear God- the original Ape-Man's name is MONK KEEFER. His name has the word MONKEY in it!!

-AHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAH FROG-MAN IS ACTUALLY FRENCH! I LOVE THAT! Frog-Man is essentially Batroc Lite, being a French Savate Master. Unlike the other three, he was not re-introduced for the second Ani-Men, nor did he join The Unholy Three. Were the others just racist against the French or something?

Dragonfly

What's funny is that comics has like eighteen Hot Bug Chicks, so she's not even remotely rare.

Total: Abilities: 36 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 6 / Powers: 52 / Defenses: 12 (120)

-Dragonfly's one of the terrible, TERRIBLE, Ani-Men villains that plagued the X-Men in the years before Chris Claremont added an impressive rogues gallery to the team. Most of them were just standard Anthropomorphic villains, but Dragonfly was unique in that she was a standard comic book hottie with red skin, blank eyes and dragonfly wings. Altogether, it's surprisingly attractive-looking considering her teammates. She appeared in a few panels of The Superia Stratagem, and did even less than Gypsy Moth, the OTHER bug-winged chick. Her link to the Masters of Evil is basically "was part of that giant 20-person group the Cowl formed" and that was it- she appears more often than the other Ani-Men (must be the boobs), but only in quick scenes, never major appearances.

-Dragonfly's only PL 9 because of her Hypnosis- otherwise, she's a minor villainess incapable of doing much harm (PL 4 Unarmed, PL 7 Defensively). Various versions of her have included Insect Control or just plain turning into a giant Evil Bug Thing, but this is her baseline form.

-Ardina was created during the whole Order storyline, as Nighthawk, a former Defender, was tasked with getting female counterparts to the original Defenders, who were in the midst of a plot of "Saving the Earth by Ruling It". Unable to find a lady Silver Surfer, he was given a magical dagger that siphoned off some of Norrin Radd's energies, forming Ardina. She doesn't appear to have done anything of note in the story (the Unofficial Appendix has nothing of substance on her), but she remained alive after the story. Her only appearance is a brief mention as a "Potential Recruit" of The Initiative (you'll find that A LOT of forgotten characters were placed on a list like that around the same time). She's based off of a character created for the Moebius Silver Surfer Graphic Novel, who was intended as a one-off "mate" created for the Surfer by Galactus.

-Said to have some of The Silver Surfer's abilities, it's unknown just how MANY she received, or what her true level is. So I stuck some generic stuff onto her and left it at that.

-The Acrobat is a CLASSIC case of a mere "Filler Villain"- the kind of guy Stan Lee created when he was half-assing it and wasn't working with Jack or Steve on one of his books. A simple-minded loser, The Acrobat is a former circus performer who made the mandatory jump into crime. Jesus, was Stan frightened by Carnies as a child or something? How many circus-themed bad guys did he CREATE? This loser only appeared twice- both in Human Torch solo stories. In one, he was caught impersonating the disappeared World War II hero Captain America- this was a direct attempt by Stan and testing fan interest in a revival of the REAL Cap. A teaser, if you will. Hell, they even included a blurb at the end of the issue, asking fans to WRITE IN- I mean, this wasn't even SUBTLE.

-A simple "Silver Age"-era loser, The Acrobat is weak in pretty much every regard, and couldn't even beat Johnny Storm when he was a low-powered rookie. He hasn't appeared since the early 1960s either, so there's no bad-ass upgrades for HIM.

Surprisingly, Ardina isn't related to Him and Her in the golden glory.
We rise from the ashes so that new legends can be born.

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 22 / Powers: 8 / Defenses: 16 (120)

-The Angel was one of Marvel's very first super-heroes, and is a pretty plain "Two-Gun Detective" type of guy, similar to a pulp novel character called "The Saint". He was raised in a prison where is father was warden- insight from guards AND criminals helped him become a multi-tasker with unique insight into the underworld, and he acted as an armed "Mystery Man" of the era. The Angel is most notable for being the FOURTH most popular character at "Timely Comics", behind the Big Three of Cap, Namor & the Torch, and he appeared in over a hundred issues in from 1939 to the '40s, when super-heroes went away. However, he didn't make the 1950s comeback the other three did, and he never got a Silver Age version of any sort, and so the character essentially vanished with only a few mentions. A new "Angel" was a completely unrelated character on the X-Men.

-His last big storyline involved him being the secret head of the "Scourge of the Underworld" organization- it was HE who bankrolled and watched over the urban vigilantes as they wiped out Villainous Jobbers the world over. He managed to avoid prison and eventually, the character died off-panel, always a minor footnote to history- Marvel never really amped up it's Golden Age the way DC did theirs (The All-Winners/Invaders were a far cry from the All-Star Squadron, despite Roy Thomas championing both causes).

-The Angel's a pretty weak PL 8, being more like PL 7.5, as he's a strictly-Golden Age-calibre gunfighter character. He's a good fighter and a good marksman, but not to the level of more powerful heroes (The Punisher has much higher marksmanship, and Daredevil is a far better human-level fighter, for example). He's pretty skilled and knowledgeable, and VERY rich (he bankrolled SEVERAL Scourges, and they had some fancy tech), and he'll fit quite well into any Golden Age campaign.
