James Allison was a Green Beret in the U.S. Army, often sent on the most difficult and dangerous missions in various world hot spots. After a dishonorable discharge brought about by too much of a love for violence James drifted until he ran into one of VIPERs recruiters. VIPER was the perfect fit for James as it allowed him to indulge his violent tendencies and even encouraged them.
How James became Ripper is best described by the journals of one of Vipers top scientists Dr. Moreau
I so dislike being awakened in the middle of the night. But I suppose that’s it’s inevitable given the line of work the jealousy and narrow mindedness of others has forced me to adopt." "Five nights ago the Nest Leader banged on my door well past midnight. He took me to see one of his men, lying in the infirmary horribly injured. He babbled something about a botched robbery and the explosion of some type of equipment. Whatever it was, it showered the man with an acidic compound, eating away most of his skin and features despite his BCU and helmet. The only way to save his life was by grafting armor plating onto his body in place of the lost skin, installing a special exoskeleton to replace his lost muscles, and subjecting him to extensive drug treatments with special sera I recently developed. He lived through all the operations and injections, though I fear he will never again know complete freedom from pain."
The treatments turned James into a monster with Prodigious strength and near invulnerability and a mean streak a mile wide. Over time, they replaced the basic armor and exoskeleton Moreau implanted in and on his body with experimental devices developed by VIPER labs: Omicron technology. His biochemistry stabilized, and sometimes enhanced, by the Omicron chemicals injected into him through his Omicron harness. His earlier armor was also replaced with a newer, far stronger Omicron Armor. He has become an unstoppable force on the battlefield - one of VIPER’s most powerful, and uncontrollable, superhuman assets.
Ripper has fought pretty much every major Superhuman in the Catsiverse at one point or another, and is widely considered one of the most dangerous villains in the world.

The treatments turned James into a monster with Prodigious strength and near invulnerability and a mean streak a mile wide. Over time, they replaced the basic armor and exoskeleton Moreau implanted in and on his body with experimental devices developed by VIPER labs: Omicron technology. His biochemistry stabilized, and sometimes enhanced, by the Omicron chemicals injected into him through his Omicron harness. His earlier armor was also replaced with a newer, far stronger Omicron Armor. He has become an unstoppable force on the battlefield - one of VIPER’s most powerful, and uncontrollable, superhuman assets.
Ripper has fought pretty much every major Superhuman in the Catsiverse at one point or another, and is widely considered one of the most dangerous villains in the world.

Background: Harold Gripp was a bad kid. Born in 1984 in Newark, New Jersey, Gripp started cutting school and hanging out on the streets before he was 10. He was soon selling drugs and committing petty robberies with his band of cronies. Caught and sent to juvenile hall in ’99, Harry was soon among the leaders of the reform school gangs and seemed headed down a slow path to nowhere......until his powers manifested. He was part of a cleanup detail collecting trash by the side of a New Jersey freeway when he and another inmate got into a fight over nothing in particular, and as two fellow inmates restrained him, Harry stared intensely at his opponent, and was as surprised as anyone when the other young man screamed and burst into flames. In the ensuing confusion, Harry escaped from the cleanup detail and fled into the woods.
Harry spent the next few months on the run, working his way west as he learned how his powers functioned by committing petty robberies of gas stations and convenience stores to survive. He arrived in Bay City in September, where VIPER recruited him by promising to teach him how to control and use his powers in new and interesting ways. As Soulfire, he has learned how to better use his powers and became a valuable member of the group.
Especially during the war with the SHADOW; Soulfire was one of VIPER's frontline fighters during that time and as such AEGIS and SHADOW would like very much to have a long, long talk with him. They are aware of his addiction and would use it to force Soulfire to give up all he knows about VIPER
