Jab’s Builds! (Nightmare Creatures/Circus! Lawnmower Man! Metroid!)
Re: Jab's Builds! (Elena! Oro! Yun & Yang! Ibuki! Necro!)
Ugh, Necro, couldn't stand fighting him as the computer was always so cheap using him. Basically spammed Tornado Hook into Flying Viper over and over and if you tried jumping at him he always had the electrical aura up faster than any player using him could.

Weakness (Predictability)- Gill, like all Street Fighters, cannot simply "spam" out the same attack over and over again, as the opponent will expect the attacks, and be ready for them (and a counterattack). The third time he tries the same technique (or same combo of techniques) in a short span, he will be at -2 to Accuracy, AND to his Active Defenses in that round. All will decrease by 2 every successive round the same move is done.
Total: Abilities: 92 / Skills: 72--36 / Advantages: 40 + 15 / Powers: 47 / Defenses: 25 (255)
-Gill is the strange, STRANGE boss of the Street Fighter III games, and seems to exist as a combo of graphical showing-off ("His Sprite flips around so it's not just the same image!") and a weird Messiah dude, leading a grand, global conspiracy (which raised him from birth to lead them) to create a new nation of "chosen people", while doing crazy stuff with wings and healing himself all Jesus-like. And honestly, I think that plotline is weird as hell, and has very little to do with the martial arts... but it makes about as much sense as Bison's weird "Psycho Power" thing, so what the hey. His look has been taken from various sources and he's a little off-kilter, so I can't say I'm a big fan- he's actually a big part of why I disliked a lof of SF III, despite the fact that it's probably STILL the prettiest fighting game ever created. At least his aloof, "friendly on the surface" persona is a bit different from Bison's Grinning Dictator act.
-Fighting Style: Gill's another PL 12 Powerhouse of a boss, deadly mainly for his sheer accuracy, and his horrifying Super Arts (which, like many bosses, is included in his stats, since they're WAY more pricey- even with Tiring & Distracting- than any Alt-Effected Extra Effort move), some of which can hit you from just about anywhere (it's the only Multiattack Strike in the series so far, plus a Perception Range attack that'll hit you EVERYWHERE, and your best hope is to Withstand Damage for some added durability. Gill isn't QUITE as cheesey as the "Dodge Everything" movie Bison, but he's still of equal power, and probably more deadly overall thanks to his immense powers. And apparently his fighting style evokes the Greek Pankration fighting style, consisting of clotheslines, headbutts, and knee-drops.

Yeah, PL 12 for that nightmare of a final boss is perfect, all of his moves are cheap as hell and he can recover his health. Plus he was just hard to look at, the dual colors are one thing but add in the loin cloth and it is too much.

But without the loincloth, he... Oh dear, now I'm picturing what his wiener would look like, all bisected colors like that.Psistrike wrote:Yeah, PL 12 for that nightmare of a final boss is perfect, all of his moves are cheap as hell and he can recover his health. Re: Jab's Builds! (Oro! Yun & Yang! Ibuki! Necro! Gill!)
I gotta say, I kind of liked Necro, at least conceptually. Villain turning a normal person into a superweapon is usually good for some pathos, and a stretchy person who can also electrocute you on contact makes for an interesting combo of abilities. It seems like more could have been done with him, but I think a different outfit would have helped. The pale skin and red markings work, but his outfit has a very "gimp suit" quality to it.
As for Gil. . . yeah, wasn't a fan. Especially not when his brother Piss, I mean, Urien showed up.

Weakness (Predictability)- Urien, like all Street Fighters, cannot simply "spam" out the same attack over and over again, as the opponent will expect the attacks, and be ready for them (and a counterattack). Total: Abilities: 80 / Skills: 64--32 / Advantages: 28 + 13 / Powers: 19 / Defenses: 24 (195)
-Urien is a Palette & Head-Swap of his brother Gill, and is created as kind of an anti-villain character who wants control of Gill's organization for himself. I think he's got a much better design than Gill, actually- a thong-wearin' Greek God dude with short white hair, and he's a snappy dresser outside of it. Much more fitting for the Capcom-verse than the Day-Glo Boss we got for the SF III series. Plus, it makes this one of the only games in history where the male characters get the skankiest costumes in town. Too bad they never really went anywhere with his design, but the whole "Promised Land/Utopia" thing was very weird for Street Fighter anyways.
-Urien's whole schtick is that he wants rulership of the Illuminati over his brother Gill, but his mad, tyrannical nature makes him a lot different. Gill, more powerful and smarter too, throws a fight that makes Urien the President... but instead rises to the secret rank of Emperor, thus enraging Urien further. Urien also appears in the "prequel", SF V, wearing a pretty sharp suit and acting as a mysterious "wild card" that's making a lot of deals behind the scenes. This is only his third appearance in a video game, as he'd skipped out the SF IV generation.
-Urien is kind of a Mini-Gill, but lacks the esoteric tactics aside from the Aegis Reflector Super Art- most of his stuff is simple charges, knee drops & clotheslines. He's a PL 10.5 character, above Ryu, but below Sagat, and he doesn't quite meet most of his caps, which I think is fitting. He's a Sub-Boss, but not as elite as the major names.

Re: Elena
I will always remember how absurd Matt from X-Entertainment made the motivations of the characters seem. Basically poking fun at how Ryu's quest for self-discovery "somehow involves successfully uppercutting Dhalsim". I wanted to reflect that in their Motivations. The existence of Story Modes just makes everyone seem MORE ridiculous, as they get into brawls over minor slights and other random reasons. Because it's no longer about a TOURNAMENT.Doctor Malsyn wrote:I choked on my drink.Jabroniville wrote: Motivation (World Travel)- A happy young girl, Elena merely wants to see the world. Oh, and regarding the suckbag that is Oro, my personal duty if I wrote a Street Fighter comic would be to feature him pulling his "Legendary Old Master" crap with SAGAT, who just unloads on him, and leaves him shattered as a result. Because using one's favorite character to beat up ones you hate is the most immature, yet most FUN, aspect of taking creative control over a childhood favorite franchise .

For sheer outlandish ridiculousness, check out some of the Story Mode Cutscene collections on YouTube, where everyone is wearing their skimpy bikini mod costumes (Link mildly NSFW).Jabroniville wrote:The existence of Story Modes just makes everyone seem MORE ridiculous, as they get into brawls over minor slights and other random reasons.

So, yep... fanservice. Surprising little gainaxing.
On the other hand, impressively bad graphics. Somewhere between a poor oil painting and playing with action figures. Does no clipping exist in this world?

Re: Jab's Builds! (Oro! Yun & Yang! Ibuki! Necro! Gill!)
Gill and Urien's fanservice is the only really explicit example of it that I can think of involving men in a fighting game. However, I don't think I've ever encountered a woman who was moved by it.
On story modes in fighting games: I am totally, totally for them and any game without one has a strike against it for me when I am considering a purchase. As I said on the last board, while the stories are simplistic, I find them no worse than a lot of Silver Age comic stories, except that a fighting game only gets the equivalent of a handful of issues to get their story across and then no more stories afterwards to foster character development.

okay Jack, you can do this. Just repeat to yourself "he'll get to Darkstalkers sooner or later." yes, he will, gonna be trouble, yeah baby I'm your man, I'll give you double cause baby I'm the trouble man
Re: Urien
Agreed, which makes it weird why they didn't make Urien's martial arts Pankration. He has the look and it would make more sense since he doesn't have all the crazy energy control powers...Jabroniville wrote:-Urien is a Palette & Head-Swap of his brother Gill, and is created as kind of an anti-villain character who wants control of Gill's organization for himself. And yea, Sean Matsuda seems like another missed opportunity by Capcom. Just like them going with Rufus over King Cobra!!!
