-Necrom is an Alan Davis creation, formed in the middle, Claremont-less years of Excalibur in an attempt to create a Big Bad for them. He had a lot of potential: The Sorcerer Supreme of an Alternate Reality Earth, he'd gained vast powers, trained MERLYN HIMSELF as his Apprentice, and absorbed part The Phoenix Force itself in order to gain power and take over the universe! A really bad, bad dude, right? The only issue of course becomes that HE LOOKS STUPID. Seriously- a world-conquering Omniversal Threat and THAT'S the look you go with? A scrawny green big-headed guy with a red robe? It's both plain AND hideous. I can get the whole "Appearances can be deceiving" thing, and how that there's a deliberate contrast here, but this is COMIC BOOKS. The MEGA-villains need to look dangerous and bad-ass.

-So Necrom was Merlyn's teacher for years, but eventually made a power-grab, gaining a piece of The Phoenix Force. Merlyn managed to fend him off, then spent years making plans against Necrom's return, including forming Excalibur and the entire Captain Britain Corps. When Necrom finally returns, he gathers the power of "The Anti-Phoenix" (a piece of the Force that he'd buried beneath the Earth for centuries). Using his full power, Necrom attempted to compress all of the Alternate Earths into a singularity- Rachel Summers, the current host of The Phoenix Force, assaulted him, and teleported the two of them to a different solar system, which was destroyed by the sheer force of their battle. Realizing that neither she nor Necrom could handle the powers they were wielding, Rachel tricked him into touching her and attempting his Energy Drain- the infintite power of The Phoenix Force destroyed him utterly.

-Necrom, despite his great power, has never appeared again. I think his fairly generic concept (Evil Wizard) and goofy appearance, combined with the relative lack of focus & respect Excalibur got as a book (it's certainly not HATED, but there's a reason that every other X-Book has had multiple chances at reboots and this one hasn't), is what holds him back. Because seriously- Omniversal Phoenix Force-Empowered Lethal Bad-Ass? Kind of an epic deal.

-Necrom is statistically about the same as Merlyn- a World-Conquering PL 15 threat. He's got a few unique tricks- an Energy Drain, Stretchy Limbs and Necromancy- the ability to Summon Minions. This is potentially limitless, but I went with sixteen and at 8 Ranks. Definitely no Immortality, though.

With the powers of The Anti-Phoenix Force, Necrom becomes the following:

Nothing against Rachel, but that was a truly horrible superhero costume.

Reaching back a few pages, having Nightcrawler's father be an actual demon stripped him of more than just making him "just a guy" even further, it took away one of the most important lessons the character could teach people. Looking -like- a demon but being just a man could teach people not to judge people by their appearances. Someone might look scary, but on the inside they're the same as you, me, or anyone else (if you don't nitpick the whole "X-gene" difference).

Then we learn "oops, no, he actually is a demon, you're free to judge him because 99.9999999% of beings like him are totally evil monsters that everybody knows will do horrible things to your body and soul." What could have been used as a lesson of tolerance for people of different religions or skin colors is now just a "he's the one good one out of all the evil ones, but only because he's a half-breed" story that so many stories have already told.
I fucking hate Chuck Austen.

-Feron was born on an alternate Earth, where he and Merlyn were both students of Necrom. He gained the powers of the Phoenix Force and fought his evil master, but spent his life in an attempt at gaining forgiveness for being a part of hurting the Phoenix entity. Feron II is the descendent of this man, and his heir- gaining levitation powers and never touching the Earth. He was meant to be the next vessel for the Phoenix, but as Rachel Summers had already done so, he merely had to assist Excalibur against Necrom. He felt Rachel unworthy of the Phoenix Force, and waited for her to die so that he could claim it- though arrogant, he nonetheless cared for his teammates.
-He accidentally placed himself in suspended animation, and when he recovered, he was furious that Excalibur had never sought him out- he allied with The Crazy Gang against his former teammates, invading Captain Britain's bachelor party. However, they all made amends once he was unmasked (he realized that the team had been busy) and was present at Briain's wedding- he, like many Alan Davis creations, was never seen again.

-Feron II is a pretty Standard-Issue Magic, though a bit low-level- though gifted, he had never used his spells in combat situations before joining Excalibur, and as such was unprepared.

Oh gee, that sounds mighty familiar...

Jabroniville wrote: Tue Mar 28, 2017 11:11 pm -Azazel was introduced as Kurt Wagner's REAL daddy in Chuck Austen's much-maligned run on the main X-Title. And it turns out that Kurt's demonic appearance is because his father is from a race of demonic humanoid mutants called the Neyaphem, who had engaged in an epic war against the angelic, xenophobit Cheyarafim mutants. Because yeah, mutants are now old enough to have separate RACES from way back in ancient history. The "angels" were victorious, banishing the Neyaphem (led by Azazel) to another dimension. Azazel was the only one able to cross the dimensions, and only for a short time- his plan was to impregnate as many women as possible, because his kids held the secrets to breaking him free.

-Enter: Mystique (wait that sounds dirty... though accurate, I guess). Leaving the baby in her capable hands, Azazel abandoned them, leading her to hate him (the two had actually fallen in love beforehand). This would all be revealed during a bit ceremony, where Azazel gathers a bunch of his spawn together in order to bring his Neyaphem army to Earth. He was undone when Archangel's Magical Angel Blood ruined the portal. He later reappears helping out Kade Kilgore's Hellfire Academy, and rules one of Marvel's many Hells. He also becomes a Demon Pirate (Jason Aaron is a silly, silly man and I love him for attempting to draw SOMETHING fun out of that stupid storyline), and becomes a permanent resident of Earth. He hasn't been seen since, but was used in the X-Men: First Class film as a particularly-horrifying kind of Teleporting Assassin, murdering dozens of soldiers by Teleporting them into the sky and then dropping them. And he looked pretty sharp- being a red-skinned demon-man in a nifty suit.
I'm oddly ok with 2 ancient mutant bloodlines (I refuse to use the term races as they appear to be quite small numbers wise). I would almost call them rival tribes. And this is ok too as in a tribal structure the fact that a mutant would rise to be the alpha is much more believable. But yes, there shouldn't be enough for a "race" of either.

The main thing I really dislike about all this is the elimination and forgetting of the real ancient demon/god analogues the Deviants and Eternals. There were plenty of both for either to have been the option and the only ones that ascended to god-hood were the ancient Deviants that became the Elder Gods (Cthon, Gea, Set, ETC).

The basic thing I'm getting at is, that these are all still basically human just different versions on the baseline species. There's no reason for demonic or angelic anything other than as a personality/physical descriptor.

Real demons like S'ym, Nastrish, et al were never human to being with (ok maybe in one time like they're Dire Wraith based...)

I guess it all just boils down to shitty writing.
Sorry I'll get off my soapbox now.

-Widget was pretty annoying- a flying robotic head that repeated the phrase "Oh gosh, oh golly, oh WOW!" and engaged in the usual kind of goofiness so common to the early Excalibur run, such as buzzing around and eating everything made of metal. However, it would turn out that Widget had a darker backstory- it was created when Kate Pryde from Days of the Future Past returned to her own timeline, merging with a Sentinel in the process. Claremont basically created the "Fixing the past just creates an alternate timeline" thing, which I always thought was stupid (it essentially renders every "fix the past" plotline meaningless, because the people so desperate for change end up NEVER GETTING IT because everything goes back to normal for them)- John Byrne even quit the X-Men book over it.

-Widget would cause Excalibur to be drawn into the "Cross-Time Caper" storyline (an Alternate Universe-Hopping story before that was cool), before eventually regaining her sense of self, and would then help Rachel Summers reprogram the Sentinels of their timeline.

-Pete Wisdom's someone I've grown more familiar with, having read some of his early stuff in Excalibur while it was happening, and reading three trades of Captain Britain & MI-13. He's a Warren Ellis creation, and represents the absolute worst kind of Mary Sue by an author- the Self-Insert who's smarter than everyone, mouths off constantly, and sleeps with the character the writer wants to sleep with. In this case, Wisdom is the same kind of Sly British Deadpan Snarker Ellis is obsessed with, constantly acts more "in the know" than the other members of his team, majes fun of normal superheroics, and got to date Kitty Pryde, despite him being a lot older than her. The latter annoyed the CRAP out of my teenage self, who only found Colossus acceptable, given that I myself was not an X-Man at the time :).

-Wisdom quit his assassination job and began working with Excalibur, even dating Kitty in the process. He helps them take down his old bosses at Black Air, but gets Nightcrawler captured in the process. However, he starts growing more antisocial over guilt from this, driving Kitty away, and he quits the team. He wound of on X-Force for whatever reason, doing a mostly-ignored arc on that series in its dying days, and then he was the Everyman character on MI:13, having lost alot of his caustic wit. Not a big fan- he's just a little too obvious a Mary Sue/Marty Stu, and not just in the "this is a pushed-character that I don't like" type that many fans just slap on every character they hate- he is exactly the kind that teenage girls are notorious for making in their fanfics. Though seeing his master plan unseat Dracula in the final arc of MI-13 was fun.

-I wasn't exactly sure on the power level of his "Hot Knives", though he BADLY injured Colossus with them, so I'm going with a PL 9 Blaster with Power Attack & a Penetrating Extra- he's generally not being seen as that powerful these days, though- more of a Street Level Investigator type with a handy super-weapon. He can stab guys with them, or go Multiattack, but it dilutes the power and is less accurate. So Pete's PL 9 at range, but watch out- get him in Close, and he's REALLY not going to take a punch well- he's PL 7 at Dodge, and PL 6.5 at Parry. HE. WILL. DIE.

Okay, since marvel bought Disney, should he really be shooting Peter Pan's girlfriend?

The Technet

THE TECHNET:

-Next up is the Technet, one of the few gatherings of Jobber Villains I haven’t yet ported over from 2e to 3e. They were a team of one-note Mort characters (based around being interdimensional Bounty Hunters) who were purposefully goofy and bizarre. They were a bunch of alien-esque weirdos, 90% of which had super-effective transformation powers, but no Skills & they were all Glass Cannons. This makes them an entertaining set of builds, because all their power-sets are 100% unique.

They were created by Alan Davis for Captain Britain’s solo book in the mid-80s, but got a lot of play in the Claremont/Davis run on “Excalibur”. I didn’t overly enjoy the book (aside from the beautiful art. And Kitty Pryde), because it was often just WAY too silly, and seemed like it sprung from a shroom-addled brain (for 1980s comics, this was a solid bet). I prefer my funny comics to actually have JOKES, and not just silly situations, and stuff that’s whacky for the sake of being whacky just doesn’t amuse me all that much. In particular, it ruins a lot of the drama needed for superhero books to work, since none of the characters are taking things seriously.

They made their debut capturing Captain Britain, having mistaken him for his other-dimensional evil counterpart Kaptain Briton, and they teamed up upon discovering the error. His sister Betsy (Psylocke) killed Briton when he tried to assault her. They had a few more weird antics in Captain Britain’s book (team member Elmo is killed) before Excalibur debuted in the late 1980s (when Nightcrawler & Shadowcat left the main “X-Men” book and formed a new franchise with other lesser-used Claremont characters like Capt. Britain, Meggan & Rachel Summers).

In “Excalibur: The Sword is Drawn”, the Technet is hunting Rachel Summers (aka Phoenix II) under orders from a Cosmic Somebody Opal Luna Saturnyne, and comes into contact with Mojo’s Warwolves, who are under the same orders. Ferro is killed on this mission, which was apparently set up by Saturnyne under orders from Roma, who claimed that Excalibur’s formation was necessary to protect the Multiverse (“Excalibur” was themed around going to many alternate worlds).

The Technet would later be used as pawns again (this time by Saturnyne’s alternate universe counterpart Sat-Yr-9), and the rest of the team quit on leader Gatecrasher, eventually forming “The N-Men” under training from Nightcrawler. We wouldn’t see the team for a LONG time (only Claremont & Davis really worked on them), but they’d make a cameo during the wedding of Captain Britain & Meggan.

Back To Basics Syndrome would rear it’s ugly head when Gatecrasher showed up with the full team (ignoring the prior split) to capture Franklin Richards in a “Fantastic Four” issue, but an understanding was reached.

So like I said, this is a quirky team of odd, one-note characters known for one or two gimmicks. Their gimmicks are at high enough levels that they can prove a REAL challenge to super-heroes (often it looks like characters don’t get any kind of a save at all- they’re just Transformed or Shrunk or whatever).

-Thug's a quaint little powerhouse: He's barely five feet tall, but he's the team's resident Strong Guy! In addition, he's as loquacious as Dr. Henry McCoy, but has a speech pattern like the Olde English of Thor. He's not in Captain Britain's league for power, but he's alright. He's not QUITE short enough for Shrinking by my watch, because anything less than 4 ranks is kind of a waste of time, and his arms are long enough to make for normal person reach anyways. Also, bizarrely enough, somebody who read my builds used my descriptions of them for the ComicVine pages on the characters! Thug's features this very same dialogue from when I used it for 2nd Edition! Does that make me internet-famous?

-Ringtoss never did jack; she just fires "Rings" to enravel around people. Basic Reversible Snare, but they dissolve if she gets KO'd- she’s effective at just that, but knocking her out is pretty easy. She can also Blast stuff (some pictures show her slicing apart robots or firing it out as a big face-blasted), or light up a room or something.
