-Tangerine only appeared briefly in Alan Davis' run on Excalibur, living in the Days of the Future Past timeline, and the shy young girl got a modern version in "Captain Britain & M.I.-13", with a much more sarcastic, leather-clad version. A silly name, but she's a half-decent PL 8 with her Perception-Range effects and Psychometry. Just don't expect her to take a punch or anything.

Yay, Tangerine!

Well, here her name kind of fits because of her looking like, well, a tangerine! Lol.

But her newer look was more modern and had no resemblance to it. Is she more powerful in her updated look?

Oh hey, this guys doesn't seem like the rest of the 90's characters at all!
Jabroniville wrote: Tue Apr 04, 2017 3:52 am-OK, this guy actually looks pretty cool- that is a BAD-ASS character design, and his whole Shadow/Spider "dark vigilante" thing is pretty cool for a modern hero. Created for Marvel UK, he was one of their top guys in the '80s (Alan Moore did stories featuring him), and he became this hyper-scarred murderous hero, driven a bit nuts by constant pain thanks to his Immortality. Y'know, what the grim 'n' gritty era tended to create. Of course, I've never read a story featuring him, so this is all Bio-based stuff, but he's a hyper-skilled PL 9 type with guns and an insanity-inducing V-scar thing on his wrist that leaves a mark on his enemies, and possibly drives them insane.
Oh...nevermind.

-I gotta admit- I only did this build originally because I own his Marvel Card :). See, back in 1993, Marvel was on its FOURTH set of Marvel Cards, and they were kinda running out of steam. That edition had a great concept- every nine cards could be grouped into a single page "spread" of all the characters in one big scene, themed around something or other. It worked well for some (X-Men, Avengers), but not so much for others, as it forced the set to only have a FEW X-Men, Avengers, etc., while Street Level guys ended up putting losers like The Scarecrow (Marvel version), Cobweb and Terror, Inc. out in card form to fill the gaps in their sets, while many X-Force guys couldn't make the cut. The backs of the cards also sucked, as they replaced the big mini-bio and Power Ratings chart with only FOUR categories for their Powers (chosen nearly at random for most guys), and a mini "Did You Know" blurb.

-The whole set was rather disappointing (especially compared to how good Series II & III were, but it did have an interesting bit- the Marvel UK cards section. NINE CARDS devoted to some do-nothing characters from the mostly-unsuccessful Marvel UK imprint, back when comic companies were just throwing EVERYTHING out there to see what would stick. Centred around Death's Head II & someone named "Dark Angel", it was mostly uninspired, derivative, '90s-Dork Age drek. Every character was dark as hell, everyone had spiked weapons and/or guns, had some combo of Blood, Death, Kill or Murder in their name (my personal favourite series title in comics history was Death's Head II & Killpower: BATTLETIDE, which only needed a subtitle of "BLOODSPASM MURDERDEATH" to be the ultimate '90s book of all time).

-OK, so yeah... I had this guy's card, and was fascinated by him. He's a dude in black armour carrying around a giant axe, that is apparently immortal, has been alive for thousands of years, and has a questionable origin. All in all, brutally '90s. I'm not sure what his job or motivation was- he just kind of kicked around, fought some guys, and killed some people. He had his own book, but it didn't last too long. All in all, it went for seven issues, which is even worse than Slapstick got.

-Jeez, this guy's kind of an average combatant (a good fighter with some balanced offensive/defensive stats, but focused on his Melee talents), but he goes WAYYY over cost. That happens alot with this "I'm an elite military/smarts/designer/builder/immortal" type of guy, as they end up with boatloads of military prowess and "I've done everything, ever" skills. He's partially super-tough outside of his Armour, but REALLY gets elite with that and his Black Axe (which is a super-tough set of Blast, Autofire Blast, Penetrating Strike, Force Field & Teleport).

-Bloodseed is some genetic creation of an ape-like race, doomed to wander around in a memory-less haze and fighting monsters, while all his fellow creations also had to kill him and each other to guarantee who will be the TRUE Bloodseed. It comes across as a very Conan-like "Wandering the world" story, with a solo shirtless barbarian hero 'round the globe. According to the Marvel Appendix to the Official Handbook, Bloodseed was supposed to be in a four-part series, but it was cut into two 2-parters, the latter of which was cancelled (probably because the series was weird and silly and oh-so-mysterious), so we never saw the guy again. A little tough to do a build of such a vague guy (his Helmet of Truth could apparently be kinda-sentient, but really only helped him avoid illusions), but here's Bloodseed- a barbarian warrior with Healing & Telekinetic Powers.

Total: Abilities: 64 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 7 / Powers: 3 / Defenses: 9 (96)

-One of the most bizarre parts of Captain Britain & MI-13 for me was the out-of-nowhere inclusion of Captain Midlands, who just pops up in the second story-arc, helping out during a demonic invasion. And I mean, they literally do not explain one bit about this guy's origin, who he is, or where he came from- he's just "Captain Midlands, Golden Age Hero", decked out in British military gear but carrying some Captain America gimmickry, too.

-TURNS OUT, this guy is from Paul Cornell's Pete Wisdom Limited Series from a short bit before the CB&MI13 series came out. He's the result of a British Super-Soldier Program (what?), that gave him Cap-level abilities (huh?), which produces a LOT of questions for me. First of all, given how many guys have been desperate to recapture the Super-Soldier Serum, WHY DID ENGLAND JUST APPARENTLY HAVE ONE LYING AROUND, TOO?? Why was he not seen until modern times? Does anyone else know who he is? What happened to his Serum?

-Midlands appears to be a "grumpy old git" stereotype, acting like a grouchy old man who complains about everything. He's named after two British humor characters (Rambling Sid Rumpo & Private Godfrey's actor, Arnold Ridley), and represents the generation of Cornell's father. Apparently the character was quite well-liked, so Cornell put the screws to fans by having him take the villain's side in the more-recent series. He makes a deal with the demon Plotka to get his wife back, if only he'll lead the heroes to be trapped in an alternate realm for all time. Given a ton of shit by Pete Wisdom over this betrayal, he also fails and loses this "Wife Simulacrum" in the process, then ends up arrested in front of a large crowd of people. Pete Wisdom coldly gives him the choice to commit suicide before facing trial- it's unknown what decision he made.

-Captain Midlands is essentially Cap-Lite, sporting a Shield and some good physical traits (despite being of the WWII generation, he still looks barely middle-aged).

Man, if Union Jack wasn't enough, there's an ACTUAL British Cap? That's pretty ridiculous. It also reminds me of an episode of Superhero Squad which had the "All-Captains Squad", filled with various made-up Captain America copies from around the world (And Captain Britain, and Wolverine, of course.). There was even a Captain Liechtenstein!

I always thought that thing looked like some supersized Swiss Army Knife. Like other blades and what not were going to pop out in his time of need.

Captain Midlands is such a goofy concept, and something I took as kind of a dig at Ultimate Captain America.

It's actually kind of a shame we really didn't see more team ups between Captain Britain and Union Jack. Again, if I was doing a Excalibur book, I'd have Union Jack on the team as basically the resident Batman to Captain Britain's Superman/Captain Marvel.

-Another character I've never heard of, Mortigan Goth is a man who gave his soul to Mephisto in order to save himself from the plague. Centuries later, and soulless, he opposes the demon wherever possible, despite Mephisto constantly torturing the man's soul. The guy doing his "Marvunapp" bio was DEFINITELY a big fan, making him into a total Red Guardian Character and going on about how it was "definitely the best" of the short-lived Marvel UK imprint that spawned him, Bloodseed and a few others. He's only appeared in his own four-issue series, and in a Wolverine Limited Series written more than sixteen years later.

-Mortigan is experienced and knowledgeable, but isn't much of a combatant.

What's more ridiculous is the name. A British Captain America type calling himself "Captain Midlands" is like if Captain America called himself "Captain Midwest" or "Captain Cornbelt".

Sounds like they were having fun with the idea from DC's "Batmen of All Nations/International Club of Heroes" which DC themselves copied with the "International Delegation of Masked Archers" which was the same idea recycled in Green Arrow's strip (or "Nothin' but the Club of Heroes with Bows and Arrows").

I'm almost not sure what the point is of using ultra-obscure continuity porn characters if the writer/artist changes their appearance/powers/personalities. Why not just create your own, new heroes and villains?

THE GENE DOGS:
-This group of dopes were created to be "Marvel UK's X-Men". They were a band of counter-terrorist soldiers (REALLY ? The X-Men working for The Man? Talk about missing the mark on your concept) who were attacked by some monster, and were only saved by having their DNA spliced with that of animals. They were part of the "Gene Pool" event, linking three books together, as they were contemporaries of Gun Runner and Genetix. Naturally, all of these books were released in polybags with collector cards, because, as always, Marvel UK defined the '90s. Every design on the team is a complete dumpster fire, looking a combination of too busy and too generic.
