-Hamilton was a one-shot guy- a Psychiatrist who hypnotized Harry Osborn into forgetting the Green Goblin identity, but decided to go into business for himself, and steal its secrets. Finding Norman Osborn's lair, he grabbed all the Goblin's gear (but forgoed the Goblin Formula), and went on a spree of his own. He was opposed by both Spider-Man AND Harry (in the Goblin suit again), and was killed by his own Pumpkin Bomb, never anything more than a footnote in Spider or Goblin History. He's still PL 10 thanks to all those Area Attacks, but lacks accuracy at anything else- he's as weak as a normal guy (though his stats are a bit inflated since he IS a super-villain, and he takes more protection than a super-tough man would from the Goblin Costume), leaving him PL 7 at-best with his other Ranged Gear, and even THAT may be pushing it for him.

Editor: What th-- no! NO! A thousand times, NO! You are NOT creating another Goblin-themed character!
Writer: But... but...
Editor: I'm serious! It's bad enough Norman's SON became one! That I could handle! But then we had a Psychiatrist Goblin! And a Fashion Designer Goblin! Then a Reporter Goblin! Then a Flying Flaming Pumpkin-Headed Goblin!
Writer: Jack O'Lantern wasn't a Goblin, sir, he was just a guy.
Editor: Whatever! He flew a freaking bat-jet and he threw pumpkin-bombs! The guy was a freaking Goblin! And then we had a Mercenary Goblin who WAS the Pumpkin-Headed Goblin! And then a Demonic Goblin! Then the Mercenary Goblin and the Demonic Goblin became TWO SEPARATE CHARACTERS! And then there was a TEEN Goblin! And a Grey one! Give me one good goddamned reason why I should let you create yet ANOTHER Goblin-themed character with a bat-jet! What separates THIS one from all the others?
Writer: This one has boobs.
Editor: ..... GENIUS! Someone give this man five-thousand dollars! It's another great idea, Writer-Boy, I don't know HOW you come up with them!

Complications:
Responsibility (Insane)- The Goblin Formula has driven a normal woman insane- Lily is a normal rich woman, yet becomes a vindictive and evil person when under the power of the Formula.
Power Loss (Goblin Formula)- If the Goblin Formula is ever neutralized, Lily's stats falter considerably, even her mental ones. Her stats become: Strength 0, Stamina 0, Agility 0, Fighting 2, Dexterity 0 & Intelligence 0. However, her Presence moves to 3.
Relationship (The Osborns)- Lily was engaged to Harry, but slept with Norman.

Total: Abilities: 70 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 20 / Powers: 40 / Defenses: 16 (160)

-Good LORD, Marvel. ANOTHER GOBLIN CHARACTER? This is just excessive. Despite that, Lily's got an interesting story, as the daughter of a political candidate, and the fiancee of Harry Osborn, she eventually cheats on him with HIS OWN DAD, and is now the mother to a child- which one, we didn't know until much later (it was Harry's). She of course got infected with Goblin Formula accidentally and went all nuts, turning first into a big gross grey chick, but then brighter heads prevailed and realized the only chance for female characters in comics is to make them hot, so she turned into basically a "hot green chick with cleavage showing and horns".

-She reappears following Norman's fall (and giving birth) as one of his "Goblin Nation", as he forms an army to face The Superior Spider-Man. She is depowered by a Goblin Serum Cure devised by Ock-Spidey, and is freed from police custody- ending up an amnesiac hobo. When she finds out that Roderick Kingsley is selling "Super-Villain Franchises", she becomes Queen Cat, a Black Cat-like burglar. I'm not seeing a great career for her- she debuted with a ton of momentum, kicking Spider-Man's ass about a dozen times (he's weaker against rookie villains, but she beat him a LOT), but ended up just becoming a Goblin Mook under Osborn. As Queen Cat, she's basically a nobody.

-Menace is another standard Goblin, with some weaker mental stats & Skills, but some boosted physical power. Her various weapons have different PLs, but she ends up making PL 9.5 most of the time, PL 10 with Area Attacks.

Total: Abilities: 30 / Skills: 22--11 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 84 / Defenses: 16 (155)

-I actually liked Phil, having read some of his short-lived series in the mid-1990s. He's Ben Urich's nephew, working at the Daily Bugle, and he uncovered ANOTHER secret Osborn warehouse of gear (seriously, are there like fifty of those or something?). Using this, he became the new Green Goblin, but in an aversion, he used to to FIGHT crime instead of cause it! A good kid at heart (he's yet another Peter Parker-Like Hero), he tried to fend off the evil legacy of the Goblins, using a new Goblin Formula with a catalyst in the mask. But alas, it was the mid-'90s- a black hole for new comic book characters. He had no chance- when his book was cancelled, he lost all his gear in a fight against a Sentinel, and that was it for him.

-Though his post-90s career has been rather odd- he became a member of "The Loners", a group trying to get The Runaways to stop being super-heroes (seems like a straight rip-off of Old Justice from Young Justice), but he later appears to freak out and attack the team when the former Turbo hooks up with Darkhawk (he apparently had a thing for Turbo). AND he got a variant in MC2, being a heroic Goblin that aids May "Spider-Girl" Parker when he can.

-Phil is a pretty good PL 9 guy, meeting most of his caps all-around- he'd be a fine starting PC. He's got most of the standard Goblin powers, but in a different sort of way- he needs the Mask to act as a catalyst, meaning all of that physicality is now under the Device instead of baseline powers. Most of his equipment is a little bit weaker, though- as a minor-league hero, he was nowhere near as destructive as the other Goblins, so the damage quotient on his stuff is generally lower. He does have the "Lunatic Laugh", though- a sonic weapon that disoriented people at Perception-Hearing range.

-He basically was a VERY minor character still when he all of a sudden popped up in modern times, investigating the Goblins with his co-worker Norah Winters (upon whom he had a crush) as part of the Front Line series. He ends up cornering Daniel Kingsley in the Hobgoblin uniform, and kills him with a flaming sword. He becomes the SEVENTH Hobgoblin, acting as The Kingpin's super-powered operative, but is soon defeated by Roderick Kingsley, becoming indebted to him (he has to give Kingsley a cut of his profits). When The Kingpin disappears into hiding (following Shadowland), Phil is outed by The Superior Spider-Man, and is only rescued by Norman Osborn's operatives- Osborn, forming his Goblin Nation, allows Phil to live so long as he dedicates himself to Osborn's mission as his "Goblin Knight". When Norman is defeated, Urich assumes control of the Goblin Nation as "The Goblin King". However, he's swiftly paired up with a bunch of jobbers and assorted losers (including many nameless Legacy Villains copying other Jobbers' gimmicks), and is beaten by a heroic AXIS-ified Roderick Kingsley Hobgoblin.

-As the seventh Hobgoblin, Goblin Knight or Goblin King, Phil is still PL 9 (he rarely beats anyone), but his Lunatic Laugh is enhanced a bit, and he has a Flaming Sword.

Hobgoblin- Would-Be A-Lister:
-Roderick Kingsley, aka the second Hobgoblin (the first was a Legion of Super-Heroes-inspired Imperial Guard member. He might be the first if you treat the "The" like it makes for a different name), has one of those character histories that you can only get in comics. The best possible word to describe it is "clusterf*ck", really. Wanting to write a "Goblin" story like almost every good Spider-Man writer (similar to how every Cap writer wants a "Bucky" story), head writer Roger Stern fought the desire to bring back Norman Osborn, believing that would cheapen his death (man, remember when writers exerted SELF-CONTROL?), and so he replaced the Goblin identity with a new one, taking a similar name based in mythology. The Hobgoblin was a new face on the scene, and much ado was made of his secret identity, with many possible names thrown out, along with a few obvious Red Herrings (Flash Thompson; a hypnotized Mook).

-Stern has since stated that Kingsley was supposed to be the Hobgoblin (though he hadn't come up with the answer at first- it came to him later), but of course, he was taken off the Spider-Man book before the revelation occured. Then Tom DeFalco was gonna make Richard Fisk the Hobgoblin (he was rumored to be that, alongside The Rose- Kingsley was going to be The Rose instead), but he, TOO was off the book before it happened. Then PETER DAVID got involved, and figured that all the evidence could only point to Ned Leeds, and revealed THAT. Problem was, Leeds was DEAD at the time, casually-murdered by The Foreigner in another comic book. Yes, that's right, comic fans- they revealed the Hobgoblin's identity, a HUGE mystery running through the Spidey books for years, and it turns out IT WAS A GUY WHO WAS ALREADY DEAD. This can only be described as a clusterf*ck of epic scale.

So What Happened Then?:
-Kingsley had disappeared by that time, and since the "Hobgoblin" name supposedly still had some power, it was thrown onto a lame generic villain named Jason Macendale, who promptly got owned again and again (more on him later). The name totally weakened after the abysmal '90s run of the Spidey books, Stern actually got ANOTHER shot at the character, and this time cleared everything up- it was Kingsley all along! He'd manipulated and hypnotized various people (including Leeds, who was a non-powered Hobby), murdered Macendale (while sticking it to him- saying he was the worst Hobby ever), and finally returned. He fought Spidey, then Norman (since HE was alive again), and then vanished after Osborn ate his companies all up.

-This wasn't the end, however, as things got even MORE complex- Kingsley was seen murdered by Phil Urich, who became the NEW Hobgoblin (he'd already been the fourth Green Goblin). But it turns out that was Kingsley's brother Daniel, who was occasionally forced into being an imposter in the old days as well. Roderick swears revenge, but ends up letting Phil take the role, so long as he gets a cut of the profits. Next up, he starts a new franchise: lending out super-villain identities and gear to small-time crooks, creating a horde of legacies ot idiots like Gibbon, The Answer, 8-Ball, Mauler, Killer Shrike, The Ringer and others! Norman Osborn kills Kingsley, but OH WAIT THAT WAS HIS BUTLER IN DISGUISE. "Disguised Hobgoblins" is the new "Doombot" for erasing old losses. In any case, the Villain Franchises soon become gathered into the Goblin Army during the Superior Spider-Man arc. He was last seen as a temporary-good-guy in AXIS, using his greed for JUSTICE.

-And there you have it- a ludicrously-complex tale told all for a wannabe-A-Lister who turned out to be a much lower-level guy. Comics is full of that.

Kingsley's Stats:
-The Hobgoblin is ANOTHER expensive bastard thanks to all the Goblin Gear, plus Kingsley's own genius. He's the only guy to perfect the Goblin Formula to NOT drive it's possessor insane, a genius in his own right, and a great manipulator of people. He's even stronger than Norman (Power Lifting reflects this), but isn't quite as good. He's PL 10 overall, but doesn't get boosted against Spidey like the Osborn family does, making a solid, but not unbeatable, foe for Spider-Man. Notably, he could often give Spidey fits, but could never actually beat him, and came out on the losing end all the time. The only major difference in fighting style is the Electro-Gloves, which now also Multiattack.

-The cliche when fighting The Hobgoblin is for him to be killed, only to turn out to be a different guy in the suit- Kingsley's brother Daniel, his butler, and Betty Brant's husband Ned Leeds have all been killed in this manner, as has Kinglsey's henchman "Lefty" Donovan. This kind of thing is best left up to the GM being a dick to his players (unless you wanna give him a quirky kind of Immortality). For their stats, just keep the physical capabilities, drop the Mental Stats and Fighting, and throw them at the heroes with the same characterization. The PL's the same, anyways (Explosive Weaponry and all that).

-So like I said, the Betty Brant/Peter Parker thing was over in a BIG hurry in the regular comics, which came as a big surprise to me, as I was used to seeing her in the 1960s cartoon, and just sort of assumed that she was Pete's main chick for like a couple years. Instead, they introduce Ned Leeds in Spider-Man #18, and he & Betty almost immediately hook up and get married, with Pete accepting that he & Betty will never get together. And right away he ends up in College, going after Gwen Stacy.

-Ned & Betty are together, but his work takes him away quite often, causing strains on their marriage (at one point, Betty tries to hook up with Peter again). A pretty regular reporter guy, he nonetheless helps Richard Fisk out in becoming The Rose, and he soon becomes mentally-unstable thanks to Roderick Kingsley repeatedly brainwashing him. Kingsley soon sets Leeds up to be killed by spreading the "knowledge" that Leeds is The Hobgoblin, which results in The Foreigner, an international assassin, killing the guy. But of course we fans didn't get the "Kingsley" aspect until years later- at the time, we and the characters were led to believe that Hobbie's Secret ID was ol' Ned, here. And so this HUGE revelation as to The Hobgoblin's identity in the Spider-Man books at the time was revealed... AFTER Ned Leeds was killed. Seriously, his dead body turns up, and they investigate and it's all "oh, I guess he was the Hobgoblin." STORY OVER. No wonder fans were pissed off. All in all, a pretty under-utilized character who ended up being an afterthought, and Yet Another Dead Supporting Cast Member.

-Ron Frenz has stated that Jim Owsley (there's that name again) killed off Ned in a Spider-Man & Wolverine Limited Series with absolutely zero warning to the other creative teams working on the Spidey books (Tom DeFalco & Peter David among them)- they were writing stories as-is and then all of a sudden the guy was dead. "I can't speak to why he did it, but I can speak to the way he did it. He kept it a big secret until we felt screwed."

-Ned is a pretty simple Reporter Build, though a better fighter than most. He's small beans as a super-villain except for the high-level Area Effect gear of the Hobgoblins- with those, he's about PL 7, and even WITH all his gear, he's a mere PL 5.5 on Defense! In other words, Ned can hit hard when he's in costume, but he REALLY can't take it.

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 42--21 / Advantages: 18 / Powers: 46 / Defenses: 15 (150)

Jason Macendale- MY Hobgoblin:
-Jason Macendale was the fifth person to call himself Hobgoblin, after the Imperial Guardsman, Kingsley, a nobody loser set up by Kingsley ("Lefty" Donovan, for those completists out there), and Ned Leeds. He was a cold-hearted, ultra-violent Goblin-Knock-Off mercenary on a Flying Platform, calling himself "Jack O'Lantern", and even teamed up with the Hobgoblin (at this point, he thought it was Ned Leeds). When Leeds turned on him out of psychosis-based reasons, Macendale got pissed and hired The Foreigner to murder him. Thus, the Goblin Knock-Off decided to BECOME a Goblin, taking the Hobbie gear for himself.

-Despite this, he was a loser, getting beaten by Spidey regularly (and also the Harry-Goblin), and in a shameful move, made a deal with N'Astirh during the Inferno mega-crossover (a Demonic Invasion of New York City) for more power. Even the DEMON made fun of him, before merging him with a demonic entity for shits & giggles- this turned Macendale insane and gave him a huge boost in power. All of this led to the Demonic Hobgoblin- a huge part of Todd MacFarlane's run on the books, and he actually became a really popular '90s Villain for a while- an extremist psychopath who murdered recklessly because he was on a mission from God? That sounds like the Nineties to me.

A Goblin For the '90s:
-And Hobgoblin was EVERYWHERE in the early '90s. Next to Venom, I don't think any Spidey villain was seen more often- his crazy visuals (a warty, long-tongued Demon), outgoing personality and "Extreme" nature kind of made him perfect for the era. To me, Macendale was ALWAYS the Hobgoblin, and Hobgoblin was ALWAYS on the Sinister Six, because my very first Spidey story was The Return Of The Sinister Six, a 6-parter by Erik Larsen. By this point naturally, Kraven the Hunter was dead, and they needed a new guy (they also replaced The Sandman with a Kaiju). It was actually hard for me to jibe this fact with the reality that Hobgoblin was never really a member before, or after this time period.

-This run lasted for quite a while, but at some point in the mid '90s, he gave up the Demonic Possession (because Dr. Strange cast an illusion that let Jason see his original, handsome face... this allowed him the strength to fight off the demon), which left him de-powered again... but created the DEMOGOBLIN. This was, by the way, the hallmark of the '90s as much as ultra-violence, impossibly-bent female spines, and pouches on costumes- every reasonably-successful character was duplicated in some form, in a newer, more EXTREME costume. Macendale & the Demogoblin opposed each other off-and-on, until Demogoblin was killed trying to save a child's life. Jason got various power-upgrades, both from Kraven's Serum and cybernetics, but he was casually murdered in the past few years by Kingsley, who coldly mocked him for his failures before offing him in prison. Yeah, they actually thought this character sucked so hard by the end that they made sure the fans knew he was a useless loser before they killed him. Now THAT is a guy who's star had fallen.

Jason's Stats:
-Even Jason is nearly full-PL-cost thanks to his Demonic powers- he's strong, fast and with the same tricks all other Goblins have. Demogoblin had a Hellfire Blast, but I don't think Jason ever did (I think- Demogoblin had it, but I never saw Jason use it. Anyone help me out here?), which would push his cost up, as it's a natural power. Hobgoblin was tough, and a very common villain of Spider-Man in his era. He was good enough to massacre an entire bar full of roughnecks (New York is full of these for some reason) without his super-powers, slaughtering them all for information- and even crushing a Hulk Hogan look-alike's wrist with one hand. Curiously, both Demonic & Regular Hobby have the same PL thanks to all the weapons and some added versatility from that points-wasting Goblin Costume (the Electro-Gloves mainly), but Demonic Hobgoblin is far more dangerous, being MUCH stronger and tougher. As a Cyborg, Jason put his Strength & Toughness back up to 8s.

    Total: Abilities: 58 / Skills: 26--13 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 54 / Defenses: 8 (143)

-Demogoblin is really awful- the Jason Macendale "Demonic Possession" storyline had finally run its course, and what to they do? Spread out an already-tired concept by making ANOTHER Demonic Hobgoblin, this one based off of the demonic side that now has the same powers! That kind of stuff just dilutes concepts to their breaking point, and is one of the reasons why I hate there being 90 versions of each character in comics. This guy's essentially the same character as the Demonic Hobgoblin, leaving the weakened Jason behind.

-Demogoblin hooked up with first the Spider-Doppelganger post-Infinity War, and then became part of Carnage's evil "family" during Maximum Carnage, joining them mainly to kill people. He added literally nothing to the storyline beyond being another warm body. So at this point, we had a half-dozen Symbiotes, five Goblins, two Carrions (though one was dead), were soon to get a Lady Octopus, etc., and now here's ANOTHER Goblin guy. This was just ridiculous, and I think the writer picked up on it, as Demogoblin was finally killed, saving some kids from falling debris, because they fell outside of his dumb "Killing all Sinners" mission.

-Demogoblin is mostly like the demonic Hobgoblin, but scaled back by a ways. He's only PL 9 thanks to weaker Pumpkin Bombs (he created them manually, saving points since I can just Alt-Effect his standard Hellfire Blast off of them) and is more of a team player, but mostly just takes lower stats. He was roughly akin to Powerless Jason, but was kind of a jobber anyways. His largest differences are the Goblin Glider that's on fire (creating a Limited Hellfire Aura), and a Black Pumpkin Bomb that creates Fear & Terror in it's victims.

Jabroniville wrote: Tue May 16, 2017 10:23 pm-I actually liked Phil, having read some of his short-lived series in the mid-1990s.
I feel like there's enough villain caches out there that NYC construction crews have to come across them every now and then, right? Do they have specific procedures for when they find them or do the crews just grab as much as they can and sell them on eBay?

Maybe it's just me, but I think that if you gave the Hobgoblin costume the Green Goblin color scheme, you get a pretty perfect Green Goblin outfit.

I also always considered the Green Goblin to be Spider-Man's number one rogue, his Joker. As others have said, he's a wonderful villain, having the Joker's insanity and cackling madman schtick, combined with Batman's intelligence, gadgets and status as a brilliant billionaire industrialist, but who ALSO adds super strength into the mix. He was a great villain, though having him learn Peter's ID perhaps made him TOO much of a threat, requiring the multiple amnesias, and ending with his death.

I've also got to say that Roger Stern probably could have just had Kingsley assume the Green Goblin identity with a minor costume update. It could have played into the mystery aspect, have Peter wonder if Norman was back from the dead, make people wonder if it was Harry, etc. Then reveal Norman IS dead and that it's someone else, etc. No need to create ANOTHER Goblin legacy to sort of muddle things even more.

And Jab's not wrong about how they really over did it with making the people in Peter's life suffer, die or go insane. It was just all too much and they should have left some of these people retain some normalcy. When you have random college professor suddenly become a cloning expert madly trying to do all this crazy stuff, it was just insane trying to rationalize what was happening to his supporting crew.

I've also got to say that I liked Harry, and part of me always kind of hoped that HE would have been the one to step out of his fathers' legacy and become a hero. I loved the outfit he had in Spider-Man 3, the idea of him being a Batman-style hero with superstrength and a flight board, actually giving Peter a friend he could rely on, it would have worked better than just having him go insane and shove more hurt onto Liz.

Man, the Hobgoblin legacy became one hot mess.

I've also got to say, they should have done more with the Jack O'Lantern outfit, it was pretty awesome.

And it is funny how many people just keep finding caches of Osborn's stuff. Though it does kind of make sense that if a supervillain is dead, stuff like that is bound to be found. There's even some game coming out about people who raid old supervillain/hero bases for loot, which actually seems like a thing you'd find in comics.

I started collecting right at the beginning of Mark Bagely's (not sure I spelled that right, but I'm fresh out of bed & don't care) run on the series & I've always loved his work - clean lines and a good understanding of action shots (though he does love weird goggles a bit too much I think). It got me hooked and kept me reading through the majority of the 90s.
Close, it was Mark Bagley, but I'm right there with you. Guy was PERFECT for drawing Spider-Man, IMO. He always made everything look so dynamic, it was great. Loved it when he moved on to Thunderbolts as well.
My biggest problem with the Spider-Man comics was that it got to the point that a person had to collect EVERY FRICKING TITLE to understand what was going on in the one book you wanted to read! (add to that the fact that most other books eventually followed that example and you now get one of the reasons I stopped collecting comics, but that's another story).
Oh definitely, which was a real pain when there was four books out at a time.
Ares wrote: Sat May 13, 2017 6:23 pm Electro is, I agree, someone who could be the iconic "generic supervillain", right up there with the Flash Rogues. He's just a guy who stumbled onto some powers, and with a typical thug mentality, decided to use those powers to just take what he wants and build himself a criminal rep. Which, lets face it, if you gave the average criminal Luke Cage's superstrength and immunity to bullets, the first thing they'd do is just walk into a bank, rip the vault open, and walk out with as much money as they could carry, and laugh when the police try to shoot them. Supervillains using powers that they could make legit livings off of to rob banks is, to me, one of the most realistic aspects of comics. If these guys had the intelligence and imagination to do something with their abilities, they wouldn't be crooks in the first place.

I will also say that I always kind of liked Electro, partially because I've always though electricity and lightning were cool powers. And he is just perfect as a simple jobber villain, which is why I roll my eyes whenever they try to add 'depth' to the character. His mother destroyed his self-confidence, he wants to be normal, blah blah blah. The guy is an asshole who got superpowers and decided to be a supervillain. That's all he needs, whether as a one-shot villain for a story or as part of a villain team. He's one of the perfect journeyman supervillains. He could fight anyone.

As for the costume, I agree, attempts to change it are quickly reverted, because no matter what you do, nothing will look as good or right as the starfish lightning mask. The thing has style and looks good in a superhero way, which is the only way that matters. It's not like the Flash having lightning wings on the side of his head really look "good", but they're an iconic part of his costume. So they just need to leave the damn mask alone.

If I really ever felt the need to try and 'update' Electro's look, I'd probably go with something like this:

    Image

It's a regular suit where the lightning patterns on it are caused by him powering up, and the starfish mask is created by the lightning playing across his face. There, you've updated the look while keeping the classic appearance in check.
I'm with Ares on Electro - both how he's handled & his costume. Personally I really like the suggested look Ares offered up, I think it's a good mix of Electro's "classic" look with a modern twist.
    Aw, thank you. :D
As for the Goblins - I grew up reading about everything Norman did in old comics I found in various places, and I liked him as an older, dark mirror kind of villain to Peter. I never did care for how Harry was handled, I always got the feeling they wanted to keep the Green Goblin a threat but how they went about it wasn't good as they kept flip-flopping on what to do with him. Personally I think they should have just had him go bugnuts & be THE bad guy to Spider-Man and stuck to it (because they're never going to make everyone happy so the writers & editors should simply focus on making a good story IMO).
Yeah, they waffled a bit on poor Harry. Again, for my part, I would have liked him to become a hero and have the new Hobgoblin just take over as the new Green Goblin.
Also, I'm one of the few fans of Phil Ulrich. I thought a heroic legacy to the Green Goblin was an interesting concept. Too bad it came out when it did, as that period in time was bad for small, tangentical titles.

I did like the Hobgoblin in idea - a legacy to the Green Goblin, but not direct. How it has ended up? I'm less than impressed to say the least, and I'm not even going to get into what the writers did to poor Phil.
I was never a fan of Phil, but it seems incredibly stupid and dickish what they did to him, ruining a hero for no real reason. It has a real bitter flavor that reminds me of what happened to E2 Superman, Superboy Prime and Alexander Luthor from Crisis when Geoff Johns brought them back.

Relationship (Peter Parker)- The two appeared to be growing closer for a while, but Carlie dumps him when she discovers he's been lying to her all along and is, in fact, Spider-Man.

    Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 14 / Powers: 53 / Defenses: 5 (134)

-Carlie Cooper was a character doomed to failure from the very beginning- when Joe Quesada declared Spider-Man's marriage null and void to "de-age" him and "make him more relateable", Carlie Cooper was the sacrifice brought onto the fans' Altar of Rage- a real FOCUS for their hatred. See, she was the first major Love Interest introduced to replace MJ- a sexy Police Forensics Expert (because you know how relateable it is to get one of THOSE, right?) who was childhood friends with Gwen Stacy, and still pals with Lily Hollister (Harry's girlfriend, and the future Menace). She fights a Police conspiracy to frame Spider-Man for murder, and eventually hooks up with Peter. And the fans revolted- now I haven't read many of her appearances, but APPARENTLY a good deal of fans (at least the ones on TV Tropes) felt that the character was shoved down our throats- made out to be the "perfect match", even to the point of MARY JANE shoving her towards Peter (effectively, this practice of clumsily-promoting an unpopular character is called "Shilling the Wesley/Creator's Pet").

-In the end, they split up around Spider-Island, as Carlie freaks on Peter for not revealing his identity to her. This made her come off as rather ungrateful and hard-assed (they weren't THAT close yet- heroes have very good reason to keep their secrets!), and effectively put an end to this eyeblink in the world of Peter Parker's dating life. She ended up allying with the new, female Wraith, and figured out what was going on with Peter/Spidey during The Superior Spider-Man, but is kidnapped by Norman Osborn's agents and given the Goblin Formula, turning her into the insane "Monster"- since she was dumb enough to keep a diary of her investigations, now OSBORN knows that it's Otto Octavius is the body of Peter Parker as well. She is finally cured at the end of the storyline, but moves away from New York, finding that being close to Peter threatens her life no matter what. So in all, basically a failed character if they were trying to turn her into the Next Big Girlfriend, but an okay one if she was supposed to just be a minor Supporting Character for a short while.

-As Carlie Cooper, she's a good investigator and a PL 6.5 character. As Monster, she's PL 9 with certain Area Attacks, like most Goblins.

Disabled (Super-Aging)- The Stacy Twins are aging at an enhanced rate, which gives them splitting headaches, and will probably result in an early death.

    Total: Abilities: 48 / Skills: 18--9 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 43 / Defenses: 12 (124)

-Soooooo here's Gabriel Stacy, the son of Gwen Stacy and Norman Osborn. Because even GOOD writers sometimes go absolutely brain-dead as to what kind of an awful Retcon Story they're writing. The FULL story, in-comic, is that Gwen broke up with Peter and spent some time in France. This was established in the old series. BUT, J. Michael Straczynski, the Spidey-Savior, post-Clone Saga, introduced the tiny wrinkle that NORMAN OSBORN of all people seduced and slept with Gwen, resulting in the birth of twins. And Gwen TOLD MARY JANE about this. But of course, we know what happened next- Gwen returned, and the insane Osborn murdered her- this is now Retconned as Osborn wanting to raise the heirs by himself. And of course because this is comics, the twins age at a super-fast rate, meaning they're basically adults when they debut in the modern era.

-Peter is able to convince Sarah Stacy that he's no enemy, but Gabriel has been brainwashed by hatred, and attacks as The Grey Goblin- the Goblin Formula halts his aging process, but renders him insane. Sarah is able to save the day, and Gabriel is rendered amnesiac (that's like the FIFTH TIME THIS HAS HAPPENED TO A GOBLIN). JMS, to his credit, regretted what was produced (though there is behind-the-scenes info that he wanted PETER to be the biological father, but had this axed by Marvel's Editors), and tried to retcon it away in One More Day, but for some insane reason was not allowed to. Gabriel returns wearing Harry Osborn's "American Son" armor, and sufferent from split personalities, but Harry defeats his half-brother, placing him in a psychiatric hospital, where he still resides.

-OH GOD THIS IS SO STUPID WHY DID THE EDITORS EVEN ALLOW IT TO HAPPEN? It's like everything stupid about comic books combined into one awful Retcon story. At least it's relatively-easy to sweep under the rug. Fans FREAKED over this storyline, and rightly so. It's a needless, overly-complex Retcon, and basically a big fat mess. I can see that the Editors didn't want to piss off JMS by refusing him a story he clearly wanted to tell, but man... there's a reason Editors have the veto power, you know?

-Gabriel is basically Just Another Goblin. No different from any other, really. These guys are all rather same-y.

    Defenses:
    Dodge +6 (DC 16), Parry +6 (DC 16), Toughness +3 (+10 Knight Form, +5 Impervious), Fortitude +5, Will +3

    Complications:
    Motivation (Greed)
Responsibility (Rage Issues)- Malcolm is prone to flying into berserker rages, out of which only Evelyn Fogg can bring him.
Relationship (Evelyn Fogg)- His adoptive sister is the woman he loves. He cannot kill Spider-Man in front of her, and tries to avoid her because he doesn't want her finding out about his murderous nature.
Power Loss (Armoured Form)- Knight will revert to human form if knocked unconscious.

    Total: Abilities: 30 / Skills: 14--7 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 35 / Defenses: 11 (88)

-Knight & Fogg are a couple of Liverpudlian (I can't figure out the British-isms for where people are from- Liverpudlian means "from Liverpool" and Mancunian means "from Manchester"? WTF is up with those spellings? BatgirlIII helpfully explained a lot of it, and it's all weird stuff involving Latin origins and what-not) assassins who gained superpowers after killing some scientist and setting off something in his lab. Often on the outs with each other and feeling worn-out by their careers, they nonetheless went through the usual motions of newbie Spider-Man villains by defeating Spidey a couple times, then getting their asses kicked properly. When Fogg attacked their mutual stepbrother, they brawled, and weren't seen again until Marvel Knights Spider-Man more than a decade later.
-Knight is strong enough to beat Spider-Man solo in their second meeting (he was prevented from killing the Web-Slinger by Evelyn- he couldn't do it in front of the woman he loved), but Spidey then won the rematch, then K.O.'d both guys by hitting them with an electrical cable. So Knight's a big tough powerhouse, but only PL 8 and thus vulnerable to Power Attacking guys.

-Fogg is crazier than Knight, and harder to stop since you can't hurt him easily. Spidey stopped him with an electrical cable, but likely wouldn't have beaten him otherwise, even WITH Fogg's low Strength (his trademark was to solidify his hands and choke people out).
