Complications:
Normal Identity (Vincent Stegron)- Stegron is frequently converted into his human form after being knocked out.
Motivation (Power)- Stegron wishes to form an army of Dinosaurs, and transform all humanity into the same- he wants to rule the world.
Weakness (Cold-Blooded)- As a reptile, Stegron is vulnerable to intense cold. He takes extra damage from Cold-based attacks, and quickly becomes lethargic, eventually entering torpor and unconsciousness, if exposed to cold environments for long durations of time.
Responsibility (Dinosaurs, The Savage Land)- Stegron is a bit of an environmentalist, and will fight to defend his adopted home from interlopers (like Roxxon). He also once raised a Dinosaur Army to oppose the U.S. Government for kidnapping Moon Boy (an act which sent The Devil Dinosaur into a state of depression).
Enemy (Spider-Man)

Total: Abilities: 68 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 8 / Powers: 60 / Defenses: 10 (180)

-Stegron's kinda funny, being a Lizard rip-off who actually stole stuff from Dr. Connors to become an orange Stegosaurus-Man (The Savage Land is naturally full of Dino DNA, so he just "Lizard-ified" the sample to give himself powers). What's sad is that he looks really cool under the right artist, but he's just a Jobber. Despite this, he menaces Spidey & Ka-Zar every so often, usually having something to do with The Savage Land, or trying to turn all of humanity into Dinosaurs. At one point, he tried to force Connors to aid him in resurrecting Dinosaurs (this was years before Jurassic Park, but Connors became The Lizard and it turned into a brawl. Later, he actually defended the Savage Land from Evil Oil Conglomerate Roxxon, getting help from Ka-Zar, Spidey & Shanna!

-The best part about Stegron is that he CONTROLS DINOSAURS. That is SO COOL. Unfortunately it usually just shows how most dinos job in comics, as Spider-Man & others can frequently just K.O. them with a punch or two, acting like they're not a threat, when they're thirty-foot giant animals that can squish normal-sized people easily. But such is life. When last seen, he was jobbing to Reptil, that kid from the Marvel Super Squad cartoon, then was seen teaming up with Sauron in the inaugural mission in Spider-Man and the X-Men, an unexpectedly-good book pairing off Spidey & X-Men villains against Spidey and some of the weirder X-Students (Ernst, No-Girl, Rockslide, Shark Girl & Hellion). His & Sauron's mutual crush on Shark-Girl proved to be their undoing, as she turned on them.

-Stegron is basically a variant of The Lizard, keeping many of the same stats (he opposed Curt pretty well in his first appearance), but focusing on different things. His tail is actually prehensile, and does extra damage, and Stegron as a whole is more expensive, but he lacks The Lizard's accuracy. In the end, he's PL 10 (really PL 9.5 on offense & defense, with PL 10 Dino-Control), really strong and tough, but lacking the accuracy and defensive ability to keep up with the big guns. His stats are fairly similar to The Lizard's across the board, but he doesn't turn into a retard when changed, unlike Curt, so he's more expensive naturally (though Curt-Brained Lizard is slightly more expensive), especially thanks to that wide-range Dinosaur Control power. His cost seems odd considering he's not really a big-name villain, but A) characters are more expensive in this edition as a whole, and B) He's a one-man army with the Dinosaurs he controls, and many of them are continually under his power.

Obsession (Lost Arm)- Dr. Connors was so obsessed with gaining back his lost arm that he was willing to injest an unproven formula. You know how that one worked out.
Involuntary Transformation (The Lizard)- Dr. Connors transforms into The Lizard with alarming frequency considering he's been "permanently cured" about seventeen different times.
Disabled (Various)- The Lizard's persona is somewhat variable, and at times he possesses all of Curt Connors' knowledge. At other times, he is nothing more than a beast, and can barely speak.
Weakness (Cold-Blooded)- As a reptile, The Lizard is vulnerable to intense cold. He takes extra damage from Cold-based attacks, and quickly becomes lethargic, eventually entering torpor and unconsciousness, if exposed to cold environments for long durations of time.
Enemy (Spider-Man)

Total: Abilities: 62 / Skills: 40--20 / Advantages: 21 / Powers: 49 / Defenses: 16 (168)

The Lizard- A Different Kind of Spidey Menace:
-The Lizard has a unique place in Spider-Man's rogues gallery, as he's got both a personal edge (Spidey & Dr. Connors were/are friends, and often worked together), as well as a fairly big loner standpoint (he's only appeared teamed up with other villains a couple times, and it was only temporary). As such, he's often been a big early adversary in Spider-Man cartoons, since you didn't need a huge backstory to place him into the world- they just popped him in to do some Lizard-y stuff as a one-shot guy. His whole Jekyll/Hyde thing is pretty standard as far as storytelling tropes go, and it never really gets old- lots of scientists in fiction are tortured by their dark sides, especially once they break the "Rules of Science" and start experimenting improperly. And of course, he's got some pathos- he experimented in order to regain the arm he lost years ago. And of course turned into a giant monster.

-The Lizard's also one of the few villains to not suffer from REALLY bad Villain Decay over the years- he's nearly always a huge threat when he shows up (Secret Wars' silly "Dumb Animal" phase notwithstanding), he's easily Spidey's physical equal, etc. This guy's no Electro or Scorpion, getting pushed with a power-up and then casually defeated a year later- he's ALWAYS a full-on deadly enemy. Varying versions have popped up over the years, often possessing portions of intellect (he can occasionally speak, and sometimes has Connors' entire skillset), and a few new powers here and there, but it's almost always the classic Lizard- a big, strong, animalistic monster that kicks Spidey's ass and usually requires tricks to even stop.

The Lizard as a Recurring Threat:
-Connors recurs a lot as a threat, as I've said- pretty much always in short arcs as a one-off enemy. It always goes the same way- something happens to Connors to trigger the change into The Lizard, he terrorizes people, then he fights Spider-Man and eventually changes back. Sometimes he even tried to take over the world with Super-Science! In the '90s, he was often seen allied with Spidey to do Science Stuff in many NON-Lizard-themed stories, generally because Connors is much better at biology than Parker is. At one point, he killed Calypso and voluntarily had himself imprisoned. He's been thought-dead at least twice in modern times, as writers often struggle with him a tad- he doesn't hang out with the other Spidey villains, and isn't the kind of guy to go into "Events", so he's the odd man out a lot of the time. Also one time he accidentally made a clone. And his son turned into a Lizard-Boy. And a couple times he joined up with the Sinister Six (the group became a lot less-exclusive with time). And his wife died of cancer.

-Oh, and also ATE HIS OWN SON in a story involving Kraven's daughter. While that's unnecessarily EXTREEEEEEEEEEEME, I think they plum ran outta stories for that kid to appear in as a victim, so whatever. Still, offing his supporting cast has always been a huge fallacy of the Spidey books. This set off a new mutation of Connors, who was more human and could hypnotize people. And soon Connors gained complete control of the Lizard form (after a story involving the reptile part controlling Doc's HUMAN form...), and ran off with clones of his wife & son that had been transformed into lizard-people like him, which is where he sits today. So basically he's one of those guys where almost EVERY kind of story has been tried.

The Lizard's Stats:
-The Lizard's tough, being a PL 11 character offensively & defensively  and having a few capabilities that REALLY give Spidey trouble (he can follow him easily up walls and is even faster at moving, is both strong enough to tear apart Webbing, and possessing enough Advantages like All-Out & Power Attack to really improve his chances of hitting or hurting Pete). He's actually one of those characters who is basically NEVER physically-beaten by Spider-Man in fights- he pretty much HAS to be at least equal to Spidey's PL. He has an array of Lizard-like powers, with Senses, Wall-Crawling, low Regeneration, a long tail to enable the Reach Power Feat, low-level Imperviousness, etc. There's also that rarely-seen "Reptile Control" Power, which is expensive but only shows up when there's lots of reptiles around (for this reason, a good "Lizard Scenario" involves a zoo with Crocodiles).

-Certain variations of The Lizard pop up, as I've stated. Sometimes he has all of Connors' traits, and recently he's been shown with an ability to control the "Base Emotions" of human beings, manipulating their Amygdalas ("Lizard Portions of the Brain") into simple things like fleeing or being afraid. This is basically a Control-themed Affliction at lower levels.

-Here's The Lizard's human form, Curt Connors. He's a brilliant biologist, and for years was frequently Peter Parker's official go-to guy for weird science crap that lets him dissolve The Rhino's costume or cure him of having six arms or something. Most of the time, though, he's just a means to bring back The Lizard.

Your Lizard build made me think about how much I disliked his look in The Amazing Spider-man film, which made me realize that I actually dislike most of the villains' looks in the Spidey movies. Vulture looks good in the trailer, Electro wasn't bad, and Doc Ock gets a pass because of how awesome his tentacles looked, but everyone else ranges from 'meh' to 'BLECH!'

I lovessssssssss me sssssssssssssome SSSSSSSStegron... 8-)

My favorite take on The Lizard was in the Shed arc during the Gauntlet mega-arc from a few years ago. He not only could control lizards, he gained the power to control people and basically tap into their lizard brain and make them feral. It was a lot of fun. Well, if you take out the whole Lizard killing Connor's son part...

Stegron and the Lizard are two of my oldest and most favorite Spidey foes.

I'd personally love to watch the Lizard apply a whipping to Venom.

Yeah those two are my favorites as well. The Dinosaur nature of Stegron was full of fun stories , and you could never go wrong with the lizard.

-What the.... this guy... he's just some old guy (probably fought in Vietnam) who uses GIANT LETTERS to fight! One of the most-ludicrous obvious Joke Characters created in modern years, though it's sometimes unclear just HOW silly we're supposed to think he is.

-Typeface is a signsmith who got fired and then went after his boss. That's... really all there is to him, actually. He's a well-read type, but goes crazy and starts hunting criminals. I'm not even sure if he was supposed to be a gag when he was first introduced, but man, fans sure as hell took him to task- turning him into a huge Mort immediately. What an awful character... his personality's all over the place, and he's such an iconic sucky guy that he was killed off in Jenkins' Civil War: Frontline, being smashed into a van by Venom. Despite that, he apparently recovered- showing up in a background scene somewhere. There's some lame-oids in Spider-Man's Rogues Gallery, but this one was just unacceptable.

-No PL seems low enough for a guy this lame, and yet he has A REGISTERED WIN OVER SPIDER-MAN. OK, so the Marvel Universe Appendix justifies it by showing Spidey was undergoing hallucinations and was tired and stuff, but STILL. Even accounting for Spidey's weakness against rookies, you've got a nutty instance. And yeah, almost immediately thereafter he was a joke, but I stuck him with a PL 7- enough to be effective against gang members and Hydra goons, but low enough that virtually every super-hero in the game will beat the hell out of him. How an old signsmith managed to be so strong and fit I have NO idea, but he's basically a pretty all-around Melee Fighter, with assorted weapons- Ranged Multiattack, Bombs, K-O Gas, etc.

-Gog is more modern than the '50s class of Monster so common in Marvel's books, being introduced as an alien who crashed in the Savage Land. Raised by Kraven the Hunter, he grew to huge size in only a few days, and the two of them fight Spider-Man & Ka-Zar- Gog sinks to the bottom of a pool of quicksand. Ka-Zar's brother The Plunderer would rescue him, and Gog (revealed to be intelligent enough to create devices) would flee from the subsequent battle using Interdimensional Teleportation Bracelets. In his final appearance, he showed up OUT OF NOWHERE as an ally of The Sinister Six in Erik Larsen's Return of the Sinister Six storyline. He shows an astonishing amount of power (one-shotting The Hulk & Ghost Rider at the same time), but doesn't say a word, merely standing there and occasionally throwing punches- he ends up being one-shotted himself, by Solo the Terrorist-Killer, who was wielding a gigantic shoulder-mounted Cannon that fires Kirby Dots at things. In one of the funnier bits of the storyline, Mr. Fantastic states that they'll teleport him back to where he came from, "But we'll have to shrink him to a more manageable size first. Thankfully, that will be relatively-simple.").

-Gog is a standard Giant Monster, showing an incredible amount of power, and way more genius than you'd think (he designed his own Translator).

Mysterio- The Thinking Man's Villain... If You Like One-Note Stories:
-Mysterio is to Spider-Man what The Riddler is to Batman: A fairly recognizable, cool villain that produces a lot of mind-games with the hero, much moreso than the rest of the Rogue's Gallery. With either guy, he tests the hero's brainpower and ability to see through things, and the roleplaying is more important than the physicality for once. Of course, this leaves both guys the absolute HARDEST to write for in their respective universes, which is why they show up comparatively less. Mysterio has a unique look to him, and he's had a great deal of stories that involve trying to fool Spidey or make him go crazy before killing him. But he gets de-pushed a lot. I always dug his costume, but a lot of people made fun of the "fish-bowl head" look.

-Quentin Beck was a movie Special Effects Wizard & Stuntman who decided to break out of the "dead-end" world and decided to become a super-villain. He immediately frames Spider-Man for some crimes (a recurring thing- one wonders why the public believes that ANY hero would go evil, after a point), but is defeated. He joins The Sinister Six, and soon becomes a recurring "Single Issue" kind of villain, doing various things like trying to convince Spidey he's gone insane, attacking Spidey & the Torch on a movie set, trying to convince Spider-Man he's now six inches tall, etc. During the 1970s, his cellmate Daniel Berkhart became Mysterio for a brief time while Beck tries a few schemes affecting Aunt May & Spidey. One time he even jobbed to Power Pack- this and other losses ended up with him losing a degree of credibility (always an issue in a medium in which a core concept involves villains losing to heroes).

Mysterio Makes Like Mister Immortal:
-It was this that led Kevin Smith to use Mysterio as the villain in his excellent run on Marvel Knights: Daredevil- back before Smith totally lost his creative edge, he wrote a pretty funny, serious, quality arc for Matt Murdock involving friends both new and old. He finally offed poor old Karen Page, made Bullseye out to be a lethal bad-ass, had a great ending (Spider-Man answering DD's "is it ever WORTH IT?" at story's end, as he'd lost his first love- "You saved that little girl's life, Matt."), and made MYSTERIO of all people out to be a competent mega-villain! Mysterio (Beck was dying of cancer thanks to screwing around with chemicals for his whole life) manipulates various people, convinces Karen Page she has AIDS, gets Bullseye to murder her (she dies in Matt's arms), and finally has Matt convinced he's got to kill an INFANT GIRL because she's the Anti-Christ. Robbed of a "Grand Finale" to his career (DD refused to kill him, and ripped on him for being a loser), he finally commits suicide, a broken man.

-But of course some idiot at Marvel wasn't editing things properly and he showed up WITHIN A MONTH in that insipid "Sinister Six" retread (which featured, among other things, Mysterio back from the dead and Venom being chased away by a burning newspaper), which ruined both the purpose and the "Mysterio gets a Kraven moment" nature of the Daredevil storyline. Fans were PISSED, Marvel looked stupid, and finally they scrambled and we uncovered that this was a REPLACEMENT Mysterio.

Mysterio Returns; Goes Back To Basics:
-Then there was a teleporting woman named "Mysterio", and then the REAL Beck came back, but as a zombie given a message from his "Masters" (cripes, comics sometimes...). He showed up during Gauntlet having "faked his death", but doesn't even get up to anything interesting beyond making Spidey think that Captain Stacy and others have returned. He also joins Dr. Octopus' Sinister Six in Ock's final run that led to The Superior Spider-Man, but turns on Ock in the end. Hell, he even pops up in the ULTIMATE Universe, crossing between dimensions and getting imprisoned there (because he learns that Peter Parker is Spider-Man, and Nick Fury doesn't want him sharing that info with the "Mainstream" Marvel U). And essentially... he's right back to where he was before he died- a recurring menace who gets Spider-Man to believe in stuff that isn't real, before being uncovered in the end. Back To Basics Syndrome at its finest.

-In all, Mysterio is rather one-note (like The Chameleon), and he functions more like Arcade or Nightmare & D'Spayre, in that he's ideal for a one-off or a mini-arc. But he is more interesting thematically than many of them, in that it lets writers "reveal" some REALLY outlandish things before the jig is up. His schemes are all rather dramatic and ostentacious (seriously, making Spider-Man think he's six inches tall?), befitting more of a 1980s cartoon villain sometimes. But he looks way cooler than Chameleon or Arcade do (screw it- I dig the fishbowl), and he's a great "assist" guy to other villains- in The Return of the Sinister Six, he becomes a real terror, nearly getting Solo to murder Spider-Man for them (Cyborg-X saves the day), and almost undoing the multi-hero pile-up in an instant by "disguising" all of the heroes as villains (resulting in Susan Richards hammering Nova, Spider-Man kicking the Torch in the face, Solo nearly killing the assembled heroes, and Hulk & Thing throwing down!). One wonders why he had all those effects PRE-SET, of course, but that's comics for you.

Mysterio's Illusion-Based Stats:
-Mysterio's a very expensive guy, but very limited in his own way. A master illusionist (his stuff is so realistic that even Spidey tends to be fooled), he can basically cast pre-set stuff whenever he wants from his costume's holographic projectors, and screw with Pete in other ways. Illusions, Hallucinogens (two types- a Transform type to warp people's minds, and an Incapacitated one to leave them gibbering wrecks), an obscuring Mist, etc. He even uses the Spider-Sense Nullifier. This gives him a ton of options, but not a lot in the way of damage- Beck is the type of guy to use a base full of traps, minions & robots- the comic book equivalent of a Dungeons & Dragons delve for treasure. He folds like a card table if the hero actually GETS to him, but that's the entire point with Mysterio- the JOURNEY to the villain. His Illusion is VERY expensive- affecting "three" sense types (Vision 2 + Hearing), plus having a large Area to work with.

-When Spider-Man thought Mysterio was dead, his "ghost" started attacking the Web-Slinger. It was eventually revealed that this was Daniel Berkhart, a cellmate of Beck's, and a stuntman in his own right. Berkhart had been hired by J. Jonah Jameson himself to discredit Spider-Man, and develops a lifelong hatred for JJJ after Jameson abandons him. Berkhart was ignored thereafter, but reappeared as an explanation for why there was suddenly a "Mysterio" walking around with the Sinister Six like a month after Beck offed himself. He also appeared once as Jack O'Lantern.

-Not really a fan of guys like this- meaningless guys who dilute the original. ESPECIALLY since he damn near ruined Kevin Smith's Daredevil finale a month after it'd come out.

-In Kevin Smith's super, SUPER long-delayed Black Cat series (seriously, I remember it being more than a year late at LEAST, pretty much ruining the impact of the storyline on comics), there was a strong undercurrent of rape and sexual abuse to the tale. Though I'm normally not a fan of this in comics for various reasons (the number one reason being that it's often used for shallow shock value and/or the creators being perverts- I always shudder at Alan Moore's obsession with rape in his stories), but the book actually handled it in a fairly realistic manner that actually mattered to the story. Granted, the story still wasn't GREAT or anything, but at least it wasn't irksome (though some Cat fans were upset that they added rape to her backstory).

-There's a mutual thing between Felicia Hardy and Francis Klum- both turn out to be the victims of sexual abuse (Felicia was date-raped; Klum was sexually-abused by his older brother for years). Klum is a powerful Mutant, forced to work for his rapist brother's criminal organization. He ends up killing his brother before he can visit a similar fate upon The Black Cat. Spider-Man, misinterpreting the scene, attacks, and Klum (thinking that FELICIA had set him up), maims himself by jumping off a bridge. Revenge-obsessed, he buys the paraphernalia of the then-dead Mysterio, becoming the third. Alas, in this later storyline, he gets involved in a fight with the FIRST two Mysterios, gets stabbed, and teleports away.

Mysterion

Post by Jabroniville »

MYSTERION
-A guy named Mysterion has shown up a couple of times, being a regular mook who bought a "Mysterio" suit from Roderick Kingsley. He kind of gets involved in a few one-shots, and isn't a major character (he has no Real Name, for example).

Third on defending the Mysterio look.

I will say, though, I miss the 60's version who also happened to build Special Effects giant robots for movies, which also happened to be powerful enough to give the Human Torch and Spidey TOGETHER pause. (Oh yeah, he was working with the Wingless Wizard, but dang-it, movie SFX robot nightmares run amok was a darned good trope.)

I also wouldn't be averse to Mysterio one-upping his technology either with "holodeck" style "Computer Generated Imagery" for the 2020's. There's room in his helmet for at least the remote control system for such devices. Holograms with force-beam or tractor-beam generating drones to make images look solid, and even leave real damage, but then Mysterio turns off the monster (or just changes the scenery from giant threat to cloaking device around said drone) and Spidey's all "What in the hell?"
