Usagi's Friends

USAGI'S DUMB FRIENDS:
-A curious aspect of the early Sailor Moon episodes, before the other Sailors debuted, was the existence of OTHER friends of Usagi's. They weren't as close as Usagi & Naru, but were more there for exposition and school-stuff. As a young fan, I only remember them from the "Gym/Diet" episode, where they're caught up in the latest fad- working out. This introduced us to the character known only as "Usagi's Fat Friend", who somehow acted like she was better-looking than many other girls, despite being a head shorter (than girls who were already a head shorter than any adult, by the way) and twice as wide.

-Despite me not remembering them doing so, they appeared as Backgrounders in a few other episodes- fawning over Seijuro (Ail in disguise), or obsessing over the great hairstylist in another one. One of them, Yumiko, appears briefly in the manga, as does the shorter-haired Kuri. Their personality traits are basically "part of the crowd", and are briefly seen thinking Ami is stuck-up in Sailor Mercury's debut.

Miss Haruna

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

HARUNA SAKURADA:
-Miss Haruna is Usagi's strict, constantly-angry teacher, and the only civilian to appear in all versions of Sailor Moon. She's pretty much there to establish Usagi's personal & scholastic life- that of a disaster. Usagi's poor grades, tardiness and sleepiness are constant thorns in Haruna's side. Humorously, the cartoon turns her into an "Old Maid" as well- a woman desperate to snag a man. She's frequently seen obsessing over men, or going on dates. One time, a date being cancelled meant she forced Usagi & Natsumi to stay after school... then forgot about them when her date un-cancelled, leaving them in the school for hours. It's pretty funny.

-The show also used her as Fanservice in the days before other Sailors showed up- in the episode based around a famous photographer, she started doing photoshoots and showed up the other girls by wearing whale-tail bikini bottoms and outfits that showed off just how insanely long womens' legs were in this art style.
-Miss Haruna went the way of most "Non-Sailor" characters after a point, and stops appearing in the series after Sailor Moon R. The "Daily Scholastic Life" stuff just doesn't matter so much, and the girls move up to High School eventually.

Also, this set had some good timing, since the blu-ray/DVD of Sailor Moon S part 2 (containing the new dub) comes out tomorrow.

Cool! It's too bad those are priced like 1996 anime (gotta pay for the dubbing, I guess, since these don't make TV), but since I have S Part 1, I can eventually watch that part of the series, and stat up Sailors Venus, Uranus & Pluto, plus the Death Busters.

Initiative +3

Defenses:
Dodge +11 (DC 21), Parry +10 (DC 20), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +8

Complications:
Power Loss (All Powers)- Sailor Senshi must be able to gesture and speak freely to use their powers. If they are Bound or Snared, they cannot use their attacks easily.
Normal Identity (Mizuno Ami, Without Power Stick)
Responsibility (Sailor Senshi)- The Senshi are charged to fight evil, and protect Sailor Moon.
Responsibility (Schooling)
Secret (Identity)- The Senshi must not reveal their identities to the world at large, nor their villains.
---
Obsession (Grades)- Ami is a first-class, Type-A "Brain". School is her entire life, and she devotes almost all of her extra energy to it. Despite being a superhero and a teenage girl, she gets perfect scores (anything less than 100% is unacceptable), and goes to one of the city's top Cram Schools (a common feature in Japanese education).
Reputation (Stuck-Up)- Ami is a classic introvert, and her obsession with studying only furthers the void between her and other students. It is very easy for kids to assume that she is stuck-up and impolite, snobbishly refusing to deal with people. Only Usagi and a few others can cut through this facade. She pretends it doesn't hurt her, but she is emotionally ruined when rumors spread of her cheating on exams and having people authentically turn on her.
Secret (Closet Romantic)- Stoic, mature Ami seems very together, but if you look closely, she's often the one most moved to tears by actions of pure romance, such as the love between Usagi & Mamoru. It's adorable.
---
Relationship (Usagi)- Usagi was the one person to try and befriend Ami when she was the "stuck-up" new girl. As such, she is one of Usagi's strongest defenders, and frequently guards her against the jibes of villains... or teammates. Though she finds Usagi to be exceptionally lazy and a do-nothing scholastically, she takes care to be more of a teasing or embarrassed-lecturing type rather than a judgemental, vicious sort.
Relationship (Ryo Urawa)- The two shared a brief friendship that could have turned into something more- Ryo appeared to be a genius like her, and he definitely cared for her, but he refused to get close, believing himself to be a monster. Ami also ran from her feelings, afraid to get too close to someone. Ultimately, he was forced to move away. In Sailor Stars, she instead crushes on one of the Three Lights- the Smart One, of course.
Enemy (The Dark Kingdom, Ail & An, The Black Moon Clan, The Death Busters, Queen Nehellenia, Sailor Galaxia)

Total: Abilities: 50 / Skills: 28--14 / Advantages: 16 / Powers: 57 / Defenses: 19 (156)

Sailor Mercury- The Unsung Hero:
-Sailor Mercury is the most popular Sailor in Japan, given that she's a brilliant, studious (in a nation that HEAVILY rewards near-constant studying & cramming), kind-hearted, dutiful girl with no glaring personality flaws aside from a dull focus on her studies. Her biggest problem is her shyness, which makes her often seem rude or snobby to others, but she's usually just playing Straight Man to the antics of the other girls, bringing out the giant sweat-drops and generally sighing in the general direction of Rei & Usagi's tongue-waggling contests. Poor girl. She allows me to bring up one of my MAJOR pet peeves with the show (one of those things that's not dub-focused)- the fact that every girl would get these potential male love interests, and you'd see them flirt, blush, mingle, etc., but then they'd go away forever and you'd never see them again. Mercury & Greg (Ryo Urawa), a sweet, shy boy who could see the future, had a cute thing going on, but he only appeared in two episodes, and after that you almost never had Mercury-focused things except for once a season.

-Like most Sailors, Mercury had little of her personal life shown, and mainly bits from the manga & anime give us some look at her (this is one of the many ways the anime differs from standard comic books, which LOVE to introduce massive recurring casts of relatives). Her parents are divorced, and she lives with a serious, intelligent mother who's a doctor (which is Amy's career goal as well). Her father, a wandering artist, is mostly out of the picture (this happens A LOT on this show, as we'll soon see- Naoko Takeuchi apparently has a problem with father-figures being involved :)), occasionally sending Ami paintings. You literally only see her mother in the anime, and only in a side-view that doesn't even show her face.

-Mercury doesn't stand out as much as her friends, since they're all such extreme personalities- Minako & Usagi are insane, Mako is super-aggressive, and Rei is just a snide bitch. Mercury is so stoic and regular that her & Luna end up the closest in personality, sharing sweat-drops expressions whenever Usagi and Rei... do Usagi & Rei stuff. The neat thing about her, however, is that she often appears to be such a closet romantic, mooning over the relationship of Usagi & Mamoru.
-Mercury was so popular in Japan that the bizarre live-action Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon series featured HER as the "captured & turned evil by the Dark Kingdom" victim instead to Tuxedo Mask. Dark Mercury is pretty much the hottest thing ever, and I'm not even a real big fan of Mercury overall!

Mercury's Powers:
-Ain't nobody better talk smack on those Bubbles, though. Sailor Mercury was BITCHING in this show, as those infamous "Bubble Spray" attacks would 9 times out of 10 be the most effective Senshi attack. While they didn't ever do DAMAGE, they were exceptional at distracting enemies. And when the entire name of the game was "distract so Sailor Moon can hit her thing", that makes Mercury the most elite Sailor out there. Because EVERY TIME she hit that stupid thing, the enemy would stand out there like "D-uhh? What?", and be COMPLETELY DISTRACTED, allowing Sailor Moon to throw a Tiara or a Cutie Moon Rod or whatever. A few episodes even show the thing having Stun-like properties, as she once uses it to put a legion of animals to sleep, and another time causes some flying objects to drop.

-Ami/Mercury has the potential to be a VERY pricey Sailor Senshi- She's smart as hell (given an I.Q. of 300 in the anime, though this is actually impossible in real life), but doesn't actually seem to USE her smarts for anything, so she's light on the Skills for an INT 6 person (she's in fact one of the better examples of the "brilliant, but unskilled" type of genius- she doesn't invent stuff or hack databases, but she's generally intelligent and knowledgeable about everything). She's easily the worst fighter of all the Senshi, lacking ANY major combat abilities until Sailor Moon R (season two) aside from "making the area foggy", and she does the least amount of damage with just about every attack.

-Mercury's also quite clever in battle. In one episode, she TOTALLY fakes out Prince Endymion (a brainwashed servant of the Dark Kingdom), tricking him with her Bubbles, swiping the Dark Crystal from him, and then SHATTERING it, preventing its constant use as a Monster-Transformation Device from then on. She also targets the Illusion Caster of the head D.D. Girl, breaking it in a great sacrificial play, as she's defenseless against the merciless baddies afterwards.

-She's more or less a Status Affecter, freezing people in Snares, fogging up the area (sometimes linking the two), or merely hitting with Cold Blasts (Shine Aqua Illusion is a Blast/Snare- the manga/Sailor Moon Crystal-only "Shine Snow Illusion" is the same but a Burst). Her Concealment effects are Selective, making them pretty handy, and her later-series attacks (Mercury Aqua Rhapsody especially) are powerful +9-10 Blasts, which is a nice change. Shine Aqua Illusion is still her best attack, though- Blasting at +6 and Linking to an Ice Snare. Expensive, but worth it. In combat, she's still the worst Senshi (her Dodge & Parry are weak, and she's the lowest Toughness and worst fighter), but she's sort of the resident Skillmonkey.

-Of note is also her little Visor thingie, which often pops up and targets the enemies' weaknesses, as well as telling people whether or not things are illusions. This is basically Analytical Vision, plus Penetrates Concealment & Illusion.

Offense:

Defenses:

Complications:
Responsibility (Father Moves Around A Lot)- Ryo is always forced to move around, thanks to his father's job. He rarely sticks to a school for more than a few months.
Relationship (Ami Mizuno)- Ryo, who knows Ami is Sailor Mercury, has a bit of an unspoken crush on the studious girl. He spends a lot of time around her, confesses the nature of his powers to her, and even carries around a candid picture Usagi gave him.
Responsibility (Future Sight)- Ryo's "Future Sight" power comes with a price- he knows he'll turn into a Monster, and sees himself murdering Sailor Mercury with blades. He insists that the Sailors kill him when he finally turns. He's a bit of a fatalist.

Total: Abilities: 16 / Skills: 8--4 / Advantages: 0 / Powers: 4 / Defenses: 9 (33)

-Ryo (who I will always name "Greg", thanks to the Original Dub) came about in two different episodes of the anime (to which he is an exclusive character)- the first being an interesting one where he confesses an attraction to Ami, but points out that he can't be with her- he's destined to turn into a monster and attack her. Ami, never having been interested in someone before, is intrigued (and Usagi is of course being SO helpful, by giving him a candid picture of a shocked Ami about to bite into a burger), and refuses to allow his fatalistic point of view to go on. Ryo actually manages to fend off Prince Endymion for a while, but is transformed into a giant Monster. Ami is able to help stop him and gets him transformed back to human, but he has to move away. He reappears a few episodes later, in a gathering of the original Rainbow Crystal Carriers, prepared to die fighting AGAIN, but is rescued. Sadly, despite there being a hundred and sixty more episodes, they never see fit to bring him back. All the friggin' filler they had to make, and this guy never gets to show up again? Crazy.

-Ryo has one of the better Precog-based powers out there, to the point where he got perfect grades on tests by being able to see the answers ahead of time. No GM should ever give a player a Sense this good in M&M, but since Ryo's a wuss otherwise, it works.

Complications:
Power Loss (All Powers)- Sailor Senshi must be able to gesture and speak freely to use their powers. If they are Bound or Snared, they cannot use their attacks easily.
Normal Identity (Hino Rei, Without Power Stick)
Responsibility (Sailor Senshi)- The Senshi are charged to fight evil, and protect Sailor Moon.
Responsibility (Schooling)
Secret (Identity)- The Senshi must not reveal their identities to the world at large, nor their villains.
---
Responsibility (Hikawa Shrine)- Rei is a miho (Shrine Maiden) at Hikawa, and lives there. The survivability of her shrine (via donations, people buying charms, etc.) is a major goal of hers.
Responsibility ("In the name of Mars, I will chastise you!")- Rei has an extraordinarily violent temper, leading her to massive freak-outs whenever people annoy her. The people who annoy her consist of her grandfather (a pervert), Usagi (a lazy slob) and Yuuichiro (an oaf), in addition to most everybody at least once. Anyone who doesn't reach her atmospheric expectations will be verbally chastised, and possibly struck with something.
Secret (Hard Worker)- Rei wants everyone to think that success comes easily to her, and that she never struggles. This is untrue- she works endless hours making sure everything is just right. She cannot take a compliment without blowing it off, as if her accomplishments are natural to her.
Secret (Giant Nerd)- Rei spends endless amounts of time lecturing Usagi for being a nerd and a fangirl, but is actually just as huge a fan of idols, fads and manga. She was quite embarrassed when, after insulting Usagi's obsession over meeting anime artists, her bag opened and revealed tons of autograph boards for them to sign.
---
Relationship (Usagi)- Rei is Usagi's biggest detractor- she finds Usagi mentally and emotionally-weak, lazy, spoiled, and incompetent. She hates that Usagi borrows her manga without asking, and makes constant mistakes. But ultimately, she considers Usagi her best friend, and will literally do anything to protect her.
Relationship (Grandfather)- Rei lives with her Grandfather at the Hikawa Shrine. Though she is frequently befuddled by his skirt-chasing and tomfoolery, she cares deeply for him, and tries to take care of him.
Relationship (Yuuichiro)- Rei is annoyed by the clumsy, awkward transient who comes to live at the shrine. Still, she admits that he is a cutie, and eventually comes to admire his sincerity and kindness, though she admits to others that she shares none of his romantic love for her.
Relationship (The Others)- Rei admires Ami's intelligence, but always wants her to join in lecturing Usagi. Mako & Minako are good friends, but they rarely have solo interactions.
Enemy (The Dark Kingdom, Ail & An, The Black Moon Clan, The Death Busters, Queen Nehellenia, Sailor Galaxia)

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 17 / Powers: 42 / Defenses: 14 (163)

Sailor Mars- Mrs. Jabroniville From 1995-1998:
-Sailor Mars is the embodiment of everything I ever found attractive in women- she's got insanely long, shiny black hair, dresses in a miniskirt and high heels, and acts in an imperious, demanding, controlling manner that consists of screaming at and belittling others. One episode of Sailor Moon R features her ordering around her Grandfather's assistant (who has a crush on her), forcing him to carry around hundreds of pounds of stuff she bought from a dozen different stores, and responds to his complaining by completely emasculating him, grumbling "You're supposed to be a man, aren't you?!?". Rei is AMAZING.

-Okay, so she's way too young. Technically every character in this Fanservicey show is ages too young for even a twenty-year old (this is even a plot point when Mamoru hooks up with Usagi). But of course the pervy animators draw everybody like they're leggy supermodels, so I declare it doesn't count. None of them look even CLOSE to their appropriate age, and the only real hint is in how short everybody is, and the size of their eyes (adult women in the show have longer, narrower eyes).

Sailor Mars- Best Character & Grumpy Dwarf:
-Mars is an immediate shot in the arm for the show, and perfectly represents the kind of character Grumpy was meant to be in Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Grumpy was there to represent the cynics in the audience- if the writers were too afraid to have Snow White's singing come off as cheesy, there was Grumpy, crossing his arms in a huff, deriding it as "... MUSH!" For this show, Sailor Moon was hella-annoying, whiny and incompetent, right? Worthy of being made fun of, and she made for a weak protagonist. And so we have Sailor Mars- she's there to CALL USAGI OUT ON THAT, taking the viewpoint of people like me, accusing her of being an annoyance and a complainer. So suddenly we had a reason to keep watching. Plus, she did panty-shots.

-And of course, this provides the show with interpersonal conflict. Sailor Moon & Mercury got along too well, and even Jupiter did with them. With Sailor Mars, you have an antagonist within the group- the character Vidia became in the Disney Fairies movies. While everyone else got along, Rei was there to gripe at Usagi, and for Usagi to gripe back at in return. Though their arguments occasionally got TOO infantile (consisting of them sticking their tongues out and going "NYAAHHHHHHHHHHH!" endlessly, while the others just sighed), the show was a thousand times better as soon as Rei showed up.

-It's actually a Filler Episode from the Filler SEASON that best exemplified Rei as a character. In it, she's featured as the Queen Bee of her Junior High School, running a school festival essentially by herself, and capping things off with a musical performance of her very own songs. Great stuff, right? Except Rei, when complimented on this achievement by her impressed friends (even Usagi), basically blows off their statements, pointing out that this was EASY for her. She gladly tells her friends how easy writing all of those songs was, and how easily the melodies flowed from her fingertips. How LITTLE EFFORT she put into everything. And as she's telling them this, we see a series of shots of her tearing up sheets of music, angrily pounding on keyboard keys, and finally slumping over, defeated, with tears willing up in her eyes. THIS IS REI HINO. Hard-working, skilled, confident and proud... but she would rather DIE that let you think that things were difficult for her, or that she ever failed. She wants you to think this is EASY.

Sailor Mars- Study in Contradictions:
-Rei is a Shinto Priestess in the show- a miho who sells trinkets to tourists & city-goers who come by to pray. She divines things in the flames, tries to see the future, and tries to get readings on people. Yet she goes to a Catholic school, as it's the most expensive one around, and being Shinto doesn't necessarily mean you have no other religion, as that's mostly a spiritual/mental thing. She lives there with her Grandfather, and no parents are to be seen anywhere- it's never explained what happened to them.

-On one hand Rei is this serene Priestess, so pretty that she impresses all the other girls. And yet she's short-tempered, conceited and arrogant. When Mamoru shows up and starts insulting Usagi again, Rei basically falls in lust with him, hanging off of him and going on dates- suddenly, her arrogant facade falls away and she becomes a giddy schoolgirl, literally hanging off of him while he couldn't be more distant and uninterested- he's basically been railroaded into these dates. When her Grandfather lets in a young hobo as an apprentice and he falls for Rei immediately (I mean, WHO WOULDN'T?), she is disgusted by his oafishness and lack of social grace at the same time as she's attracted to his looks and his sincerity. So she spends the rest of her time stuck between insulting and emasculating him (urrgghhhh...), and inadvertently leading him on, such as kissing him when he does something heroic or kind (frequently, she even shocks herself with this). And that moment, when he helps them fight a monster in on the ski slopes and is badly beaten in the experience, she sweetly kisses him while he's unconscious, adding "... Idiot." MARRY ME, REIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII...!

Sailor Mars- The Closest One To Usagi:
-It says something about the skill of the writers that they successfully pulled off the bitchy Rei being the actual dearest friend of Usagi, given all the crap they say to each other. Yet time and time again, you see these little moments that show it. In one episode, Usagi actually gives Sailor Mars the Silver Crystal. Her reasoning? Because her true love, Endymion, is the slave of the Dark Kingdom, she's afraid they'll use him to get to her, and force her to give up the Crystal. Recognizing her own mental weakness in a rare moment of self-awareness, and her lack of spirit, she's afraid she'll be broken, and thus gives it to the one person (the sneering, hard-hearted Rei) who she can trust not to give in. And during the course of the episode, the villains capture Sailor Moon anyways, and begin beating her to get her to reveal the location of the Silver Crystal. And she refuses, of course. Sailor Mars sits back in hiding, surely keeping the Crystal safe. And the torture continues, with Usagi screaming in pain. And Mars starts to tear up. And shudder. And shake. And eventually she BREAKS, coming running to Sailor Moon's aid. Because THEY LOVE EACH OTHER, DAMMIT.

-And despite her huge schoolgirl crush on Mamoru? The second she sees that he and Usagi were long-lost lovers and Destined Forever, she steps aside. She tears up when Mamoru dies, and VICIOUSLY slaps Sailor Moon for offering to give up- "Do you want his sacrifice to become meaningless!?!", but ultimately she lets Usagi have the boy she likes. When Usagi is still crushed an episode later, it's actually REI who's the most sympathetic! Many later episodes show the same thing- when Usagi is dumped by Mamoru and emotionally-shattered by it, Rei for once drops the high & mighty attitude, and tenderly consoles the heartbroken young girl. She knows this is no time to be nasty.

-And of course the finale of the first season. They've just watched their three best friends die in battle against the villains. Sailors Mars & Moon are the only two left. And Usagi, basically shell-shocked, wants to turn back. Mars won't let her. But instead of screaming at her for her weakness, she just smiles and points out that they have to keep fighting. And decides to hold back and fight the last two DD Girls by herself. Sailor Moon refuses, tears streaming down her face, not wanting her last friend to die. Mars simply responds that she won't (even though she knows it's likely), suggests that "you're right. Maybe I should have kissed Yuuichiro after all" in a fatalistic sense, then goes on to fight the monsters herself. And she is horribly beaten, screaming as she's fatally-wounded by the monsters. One "Fire Soul" attack kills a DD Girl as it leaps out at Sailor Moon, but the remaining one taunts the girl. She prepares for one last, lethal attack as Mars is slumped over beside her... but Mars grabs her wing. And the monster looks down. And Rei just peers up, battle-damage all over her face. And she just says "I'm... not... done... yet... Fire... Soul...!" The monster can only scream, as fire bursts from Rei's hand, immolating her. And this takes a WHILE- this bitch dies in AGONY. And Sailor Mars dies, shattering Sailor Moon once and for all. This is basically up there with Optimus Prime in terms of death scenes. Hell, it's BETTER. Just the sheer defiance and fury of Mars is one of the greatest moments anything has ever had. This is "Zuko in Iroh's Tent" good, here.

-This is exemplified around the series finale, when the Sailors are killed by Sailor Galaxia's agents. Who does Usagi run to in those final moments? OF COURSE.

Sailor Mars- Manga Version:
-Sailor Mars in the manga is an incredibly different character. Humorously, she's instead this serene, noble, stoic character, free from emotional outbursts. She & Sailor Venus are the leaders of the Sailor Senshi. There's a neat one-off where she finally details her thoughts on men- she considers them mentally-weak, untrustworthy and not worth her time (is there ANY VERSION where she isn't my dream girl?!?)... except for one young man. The student of her father (and mentor/student stuff is Serious Business in Japanese culture), he is kind to her always, and she finds herself falling for him as she gets older- he takes charge during most of her yearly meetings with her distant, ambitious father (a politician whom she despises, as she feels that he abandoned her mother, who died young). But at the end, he confesses that her father has set him up with another woman in a political marriage to help further his career- Rei is angered and disgusted ("If you wanted a political marriage, you would have married ME"), but instead recalls her past self promising a vow of chastity to Princess Serenity, and so makes the same promise in modern times.

-So basically an entirely different person. Still kind of fun in a way, but a lot less prone to the character moments that defined the early cartoon so much. Most of Naoko's Senshi seemed quite stoic and dull compared to the extreme personalities seen in the original cartoon anyhow.

Sailor Mars's Stats:
-Sailor Mars is much like Sailor Venus- a mid-level, fairly accurate Blaster, though she's a more varied combatant, owing to her regular Multiattack move, and her great "Stun the enemy with paper" stunt. That thing nearly ALWAYS WORKS, and it consists of her doing a Shinto prayer with a piece of paper in front of her (an ofuda paper with Japanese writing on it), then sticking it onto the enemy's forehead. Their reaction is always this "W-ahhhh?" bit of confusion, leading to an immediate attack from another- usually Sailor Moon. This attack even trumped Jadeite, who was so stunned that he was left unaware of one of his moving AIRPLANES comings towards him- he looked pretty messed-up the next time we saw him.

Total: Abilities: 66 / Skills: 48--24 / Advantages: 15 / Powers: 27 / Defenses: 14 (147)

-Sailor Mars drops to PL 8 in the first season, but still packs an Area Attack and her useful stuff with the paper.

I KNEW that thing was gonna just explode on DA, much as Elsa pics did when the movie came out.

And hey- it looks like Lau's learned how to draw a new kind of face :).

Haha, yeah, I noticed. He has one of Ciri (from the Witcher series)that also looks different from his usual, but perhaps not as much as this Elsa.

Offense:
Unarmed +4 (+1 Damage, DC 16)
Initiative +2

Defenses:
Dodge +4 (DC 14), Parry +4 (DC 14), Toughness +2, Fortitude +4, Will +3

Complications (Early):
Relationship (Rei Hino, aka Sailor Mars)- It was love at first site for the poor buffoon, as the Goddess of Sexiness, aka Sailor Mars, was the first site he saw when he awoke at her Shinto Shrine. Desperately in love with Rei, Yuuichiro is overly-protective, to the point where he will risk his life to save hers, even though he knows she "doesn't think of him that way". He nonetheless becomes extremely jealous when he sees her with other males, though he will get angry on her behalf if he thinks Rei is being cheated on or disrespected.
Responsibility (Wealthy)- The son of wealthy parents, Yuuichiro is embarrassed by their status, and kind of avoids that lifestyle. He is at the Hikawa Shrine in order to better himself. And because he loves Rei.

Total: Abilities: 18 / Skills: 12--6 / Advantages: 1 / Powers: 0 / Defenses: 7 (32)

-Poor "Chad" (his Original Dub Name). Introduced as a kid who was bumming around Japan (though it later turned out that he was from a wealthy family), he fell in love with Rei at first sight (well really- who wouldn't? LOOK AT HER!), and moved into the Hikawa Shrine immediately. Grandpa took him on as an apprentice/stooge, and pretty much bullied him and bossed him around non-stop, but he did it all just for Rei. Future episodes show that he was growing on her (he was attractive, and surprisingly deep, once they realized he was actually rich), but they never moved on past the first season (where she openly mourned that she never kissed him before they left on their fatal adventure). A really cool Sailor Moon R episode featured him diving into the path of Koan's "Dark Fire" attack (that's where Interpose comes from) to protect Rei, and she reciprocated later- Koan is shocked, since Mars showed him nothing but contempt earlier, but Mars admitted that while she does not care for him romantically, she wishes to honor his sincerity and kindness by sacrificing for him as he would for her.

-He continued on as a bit of a sad-sack as the series continued- an Anime-only character, he had no real place in the main story. In Sailor Moon S, he mistook the boyish Sailor Uranus for a male who was dating Rei, and began stalking "him" jealously- when he uncovered her on a date with Michiru (Sailor Neptune, her lesbian lover), he freaked out for "cheating on Rei!" and defended her honor by challenging the cad to a duel! His final appearance (he REALLY stopped showing up after a point) was in Sailor Moon SuperS, where he becomes jealous of Mamoru, who is now staying at the Hikawa Shrine while his apartment is being cleaned. This gets worse when Rei catches a side of a nude Mamo.
-So yeah, he essentially disappears, his character altering a bit in order to make him a goof who just gets jealous or stalks Rei's "boyfriends".

-Yuuichiro is training under a master martial artist, but appears to have little fighting ability himself. He is athletic and knows how to avoid harm, however- he spends a lot of time running from Rei's Grandpa's assaults. However, against a real adversary he's hooped- he usually gets smashed up by avalanches or has his Pure Heart Crystal removed or something.

I haven't seen a single episode of Sailor Moon, I could just never bring myself to watch it. :?
Arkrite wrote: Sat Jun 17, 2017 7:27 am To be fair most anime these days seems to be either animated ads for manga series, or light novels with a limited run of between 12 to 24 episodes and then ending, regardless of how many volumes of the manga/light novels they've yet to get through.
Only the exceptionally popular stuff seem to get long on going series, and often a lot of that winds up being filler.

I think somebody worked out the number of actual real story episodes of Naruto vs filler (read: Fanfic made by the animators) and ratio was something along the lines of over sixty percent of the episodes were unimportant nonsense filler...

Of course there are the occasional series that (thankfully) breaks these molds and some which are surprisingly good.
Cowboy Bebop will always hold a special place in my heart.
The website www.animefillerlist.com actually tells you which episodes are reported filler and how many there are for most anime. Naruto is particularly bad with like a 40% of filler, whereas One Piece is at almost 800 episodes with only like 13% being filler. It's pretty useful since most of the time I absolutely hate filler episode.

-Haha, Rei's Grandpa was a funny little character. Playing on the Japanese trademark that all old people are both wise and incredibly perverted, he ran the Hikawa Shrine, and was a constant pain in his granddaughter's ass, as despite being her primary caregiver, he was irresponsible and constantly flirting with the teenage girls who came to the Shrine. He was a classic case of the Wise Old Master though, because if provoked, he was capable of fighting off Zoisite by withstanding his assault from the Black Crystal through sheer Chi Mastery. In another instance, he was faced with over twenty mind-controlled females that he'd been training in aerobics, and he responded by just diving into melee, sending out a rapid-fire burst of martial arts strikes, then calmly clapping his hands, causing EVERYONE to fall down on cue. So despite being reliant on his Chi to meet his caps, Grandpa's a bad-ass, and certainly the strongest character without magical powers.

-This is an anime-only character. Manga Grandpa was only seen once or twice, and was basically a generic, smiling old man, and had no effect on the plot.
