Thought about you today as I watched beauty and the beast for the eighteen millionth time this week. What did you think of the live action version?
From my review when I saw it:
Saw the new Beauty & The Beast film. As it's basically the same movie as the cartoon, it's very good. There are some random changes throughout, but all minor.

* Belle is an inventor, because feminism I guess. It doesn't matter at all to the plot, and only shows up once.

* We get some backstory as to the parents of our leads. And even side characters get family. There's also some stuff to deflate continuity issues from the original (no mention of time, reasoning why the servants were cursed, why it's winter all of a sudden, why nobody remembers the giant castle & Prince).

* alot of dialogue is kept exact (most of "Bonjour"). Other bits are changed, but only slightly. It's actually a little weird.

* Maurice is made less cartoonish, as is The Beast's anger and Gaston's he-man attitude. This alters things just a little. Less broad, and more like a sitcom.

* Emma Watson really can't sing well. At all. The problem with keeping all the cues of the original while using "regular" actors.

* LeFou has been made man-crushy on Gaston to the point of mincing, now. Though some of the best gags are based around it. Josh Gad was really trying to steal the scenery here.

* Using such focus on the servants kind of detracts from the main couple (especially during The Big Moment, which feels more glossed over here), though they're shown together reading a lot more. In the cartoon & play, Beast was illiterate.

Meanwhile, the reactions to the now infamous "Emma Watson Belle doll" at Disney stores are greatly amusing. "It looks like Justin Beiber in a wig!" the detractors cry.

Well... I'm sorry to point this out to the Potterites out there... but Emma Watson kind of, in fact, looks like that. Both she & Beiber feature very androgynous, long-faced, pointy-chinned faces. A doll version (and to be fair, it's not exactly a perfect likeness- Emma is quite pretty- the doll has "fivehead"- look it up) is kinda gonna look like that.
Looking back, I still enjoyed it (definitely more than the Nostalgia Critic did- he TORE into that one!), but it's definitely inferior to the first in every way. The Beast looked like CGI garbage, and also robbed the film of some of the chemistry between the two leads. Anyone saying the live action one is better than the cartoon is INSANE, or a Potterite who's blinded themselves to the truth :).

The Deaths of the Sailors: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hMJ26mJZzGg (this stuff is INTENSE)

(check Venus vaporizing a bitch at 9:35. And then, twelve minutes in, Rei gets the all-time B.A.M.F. moment in the series with "I'm not beaten yet")

My reviews of the last three episodes of the first season:
Episode #44: The Endgame approaches- Sailor Venus & Artemis have discovered the entrance to the Dark Kingdom, and the Sailors investigate, but are thrown through time by Kunzite! The girls arrive in the ruins of the Moon, coming across a light message of QUEEN SERENITY HERSELF, and she finally goes into detail about the backstory of their world: The Silver Millennium was the Moon Kingdom meant to watch over the Earth, but a human sorceress named Beryl was possessed by an "evil energy" called Metalia, and attempted to take over both. She leads a bunch of humans into attacking the Moon- it is Prince Endymion of Earth who delivers the warning to Princess Serenity, his love.

The war is quick and sudden, with hordes of humans (in armor, shields and swords) attacking, and Metalia one-shotting the Sailors (complete with in-your-face panty-shots, because of course there are). Princess Serenity & Endymion are killed as well, causing Queen Serenity (Past Usagi's mother) to sacrifice her life in order to resurrect the dead, and to seal Queen Metalia away. Warning that Metalia could return at any time, Serenity orders Luna & Artemis to watch over the girls when they are reborn. The girls return to modern times, where Kunzite beats the hell out of their Cats, and starts throwing around Energy Boomerangs. The girls are badly-hurt, but Usagi pulls out the stops and uses Moon Healing Escalation. Pained, but with too much pride to say "Refresh!" and be de-eviled, Kunzite instead throws out one last Boomerang, which is reflected back. Fatally-wounded, he can only call out Zoisite's name to lead his soul into limbo.

And with that, the gang knows the villains' hide-out, and they promise to invade.

(First Appearance: Queen Serenity, Kunzite's Time Teleport Attack & Boomerang Attack- Split)

---

Episode #45: The first of the Two-Part Finale, the Sailors invade D-Point and the Dark Kingdom, facing off against the DD Girls (a band of toughs who announce to Beryl that THEY'LL take the mission of killing the girls) in Arctic temperatures. But... this is a bit... DIFFERENT. When the DD Girls attack, Sailor Jupiter lets out a point-blank Supreme Thunder on them. And DIES. Mercury decides to "hold them off" to allow the girls to get to Beryl faster, and is surrounded by an "Illusion" that gives off real heat- the DD Girls (now only three in number- seems Jupiter killed two of them) trap and torture her... but Mercury reveals her ruse, using her Computer one last time to shatter the crystal that's controlling their powerful illusions before the Girls kill her. Sailor Moon offers up the Silver Crystal if the Girls will lay off, but no dice- they just keep coming. (Edit- I love that bit- Usagi is so sentimental and loves her friends SO MUCH that she's willing to sacrifice everything they've worked for to save their lives)

Sailor Venus dies next, after vaporizing the pink Girl on-screen with her Crescent Beam- this leaves only two Sailors left- the two who've spent the entire series thus far arguing with each other. Sailor Mars admits that all their arguments in the past were fun (a pretty fatalistic comment), but falsely claims that "I'll be fine!". At which point she's dive-bombed by the remaining two enemies. They're fast and lethal, trapping her in ice, and the green Girl is prepared to kill Sailor Moon... when "Fire Soul" comes blasting out from under the ice, burning the monster alive! Then the blue, lead Girl comes up with Mars' broken body, taunting and ready to make her attack.

Usagi is screwed with a capital "S" as the cruel bitch taunts her... but a bloody, beaten and dying Sailor Mars weakly grabs one of her fairy wings. The confused monster looks down, and in the series' best friggin' moment, Mars just goes "I'm not beaten yet"... and before the Monster can fight her way free, we hear a light "Fire... Soul..." and she immolates before our eyes. Seriously, this is "Zuko in Iroh's Tent" storytelling right here- the single Sailor that's been lecturing and berating Sailor Moon for thirty-ish episodes is the last one standing, and gives the last of her energy to save her dearest friend. And MAN that death is satisfying- the DD Girls were SO evil, and SO lethal, and this one doesn't get any kind of light, quick death. She dies SCREAMING, burned alive. Sailor Mars can only say "You were right, Usagi... I should have kissed Yuuichiro..."

And with that, all four of the Sailors die. This move shocked the HELL out of the fans, and apparently angry mothers deluged the TV studio with complaints about their traumatized daughters, and of course in North America this was heavily edited to the point where Episodes 45 & 46 were turned into ONE, with all the naughty death bits taken out... but WOW. Now THAT is how you do a motherf***in' penultimate episode.

(Monster Powers: Flight, Damaging Vine Snares, Ice Control, Illusion Disguises, Heat Blasts)

---

Episode #46: In the finale of the first Season, Sailor Moon is immediately swept into Queen Beryl's Chamber, where she confronts our heroine with Endymion in tow- a Mind-Controlled Prince nearly slaughters his beloved (even after she tosses the Tiara into his chest, realizing that she can't let her teammates' deaths be in vain), until she brings out the LOCKET OF TRUE LOVE, which completely wipes out all the dark energy. Endymion, now back to Mamoru, is able to throw a single Rose straight through a crystal spear of Beryl's, nailing her right in the cleavage- the "Good Energy" of the rose starts cracking her evil body.

Curiously, it only just now occurs to me that this is THE ONLY TIME BERYL AND SAILOR MOON MEET. Seriously, the entire rest of the show has been Beryl sitting in her chamber, giving orders. It's a given that she's more powerful than her henchmen (she slaughters two of them), but a bit odd that she gives zero effort otherwise. And considering that she's this Season's Main Villain (though Metalia's in charge), it's kind of funny that she has zero interaction with the main characters for this long.

Mamoru/Endymion dies from his wounds rescuing Usagi one last time, and Usagi refuses to kiss him... because "My friends weren't able to kiss the boys they loved." A wounded Beryl pleads with Queen Metalia for more energy- soon the two are merged into a Demonic Purple Giantess, who wields tremendous power. She blasts Sailor Moon, who transforms into Princess Serenity- the show's Theme Song ends up being played over the battle, which is too bad, because the Original Dub used the AMAZING song Carry On in this case, making it an enormous one-off song (I think the Dub probably spent the budget it saved on animation on rockin' music).

But still... Princess Serenity unleashing her full power, with the spirits of her dead friends fighting alongside her, holding hands too ? Now THAT'S a Season Finale. And like so many Shoujo shows before it (seriously, this was apparently a trend), the heroine dies... but not before she's resurrected by the Silver Crystal, along with all of the brave heroes who died before her. This is all still a bit weird- essentially undoing the deaths, but still giving us the "Bittersweet Finale" because the girls have all been mind-wiped (along with everyone in the world, I guess, because nobody remembers that the girls were once friends). Artemis can only suggest that the girls will have to just meet up again.

In case anyone doubts the power of Carry On: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8TWC2pNiuc&t=46s

That's it. That right there... the mother of all Finales. A lone girl against the ultimate evil in the universe- a Bitch Queen a hundred feet high and with malevolent intentions. She's lost her four best friends, and was forced to execute the only man she's ever loved, and now it's the final battle. And when things are darkest, she not only makes up for 45 episodes of whining and crying, but has the spirits of her dead friends guiding her hands to vanquish Queen Metalia once and for all. THAT is how you write an ending!

And with "You Can Do It!" Rock accompanying her, too :).

The Subtitled, original version. Also bitching, but with way worse music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6TZc1TBdVvo

Complications:
Power Loss (All Powers)- Sailor Senshi must be able to gesture and speak freely to use their powers. If they are Bound or Snared, they cannot use their attacks easily.
Normal Identity (Tsukino Usagi, Without Power Stick)
Responsibility (Sailor Senshi)- The Senshi are charged to fight evil.
Responsibility (Schooling)- Unfortunately, Usagi is terrible at it.
Secret (Identity)- The Senshi must not reveal their identities to the world at large, nor their villains.
Responsibility (Princess Serenity)- Usagi/Serena is both the Princess of the Moon Kingdom, and the future Queen of the World. This makes her many enemies, and gives her numerous responsibilities.
Responsibility (I Just Want To Be Normal)- Usagi hates the constant violence, and the threats against her life. Her fondest wish is to "just be a normal girl" once again, and leave all this super-heroing behind.
Power Loss (All Powers)- At times, Usagi's desire to be normal actually affects her powers, and she loses her special abilities.
---
Responsibility (Lazy)- Usagi does not like to do things that require effort.
Responsibility (Gluttonous)- Usagi LOOOOOOOOOOOVES to eat, particularly sweet things.
Responsibility (Incompetent)- Usagi is a poor student.
Responsibility (Sleepyhead)- Usagi is famous for her ability to sleep in past her alarm and be late for school.
Responsibility (Crybaby)- Usagi's first reaction to almost every bit of stress, for YEARS, was to openly cry rivers of tears.
---
Relationship (Naru Osaka)- Naru was Usagi's best friend in the early days- it was them plus two other background girls, and later, only Naru as Usagi's Non-Sailor-Friend.
Relationship (Ami- Sailor Mercury)- Usagi was the only person to befriend the "snobbish" world-class student, and deeply admires Ami's brilliance.
Relationship (Rei- Sailor Mars)- Sailor Mars is grouchy, hard-working, snide and arrogant- she despises all of Usagi's above-mentioned Responsibilities, and is constantly screaming at her to improve. Usagi both hates to be insulted, and spitefully argues back with Rei, who is "So mean!" The two pick at and tease each other, and generally never go more than a day without a big fight. However, Usagi deeply respects Rei's work ethic, beauty, grace and toughness- it is Rei to whom Usagi entrusts the Silver Crystal when she fears she'll break and give it up, and it is Rei's loss that Usagi feels most deeply at D-Point.
Relationship (Mamoru/Tuxedo Mask)- Usagi & Mamoru argued non-stop at first, with him gladly teasing the silly young girl. However, she had a serious crush on the mysterious, handsome Tuxedo Mask, who always came to her rescue. Only later did they realize their true feelings for one another, as they were in fact lovers in another life, and destined to be together in the future. When he breaks up with her in Sailor Moon R, she is emotionally shattered to the point where even her closest friends won't tease her.
---
Relationship (Minako- Sailor Venus)- Usagi was once worshipful of the possibly-fictional Sailor V, but soon comes to view Minako as a kindred spirit in Idol-loving weirdness.
Relationship (Makoto- Sailor Jupiter)- Usagi was the only person to befriend the violent giantess, and comes to deeply admire Mako's strength, hatred of bullies, and cooking ability. That the two have the same taste in men (such as Motoki) is helpful as well.
Relationship (Motoki)- Usagi nursed a serious, but childlike, crush on Motoki Furuhata in the first season.
Relationship (Chibi-Usa)- Usagi hates the bratty little "spore" as much as anything- the two are entirely too much alike. It's only later, once she realizes that "Little Usagi" is actually her own DAUGHTER, from the future, that they start to get along.
---
Phobia (Thunder)- Usagi is petrified of thunder, to the point of screaming, crying and running away to hide when she hears it.
Responsibility (Believes in People)- Usagi has an obsessive desire to see the best in people- she refuses to see only the negatives, and is constantly willing to help, even towards people who despise her (like Nastumi/An).
Responsibility (That Kind Of Girl)- Usagi tends to draw strong reactions from some men, who fall obsessively in love with her at first sight. Umino crushes on her during their time at Junior High. Seijuro/Ail openly crushes on her as soon as he comes to Earth, almost abandoning his lifelong companion for her. Prince Demande is so obsessed with Sailor Moon/Neo-Queen Serenity that he tries to use his powers to RAPE HER.
---
Enemy (The Dark Kingdom, Ail & An, The Black Moon Clan, The Death Busters, Queen Nehellenia, Sailor Galaxia)

Total: Abilities: 38 / Skills: 32--16 / Advantages: 12 / Powers: 131 / Defenses: 23 (220)

-Princess Serenity is actually Usagi's name from the Moon Kingdom- it's also the name given to her whenever she engages her "Super Form" in the show- something that typically only happens once or twice a season. In the first season, she did it when she uncovered her memories of the Moon Kingdom and watched her beloved Mamoru/Endymion fatally-wounded by Zoisite (in this form, she effortlessly one-shotted both Zoisite & Kunzite), and then again when she saw her friends & Mamoru killed, and had to face down the evil Bitch Queen of the Dark Kingdom solo. In Sailor Moon R, she engages the form against the Death Phantom, allying with Chibi-Usa's own "Princess Form".

-Basically, this is an unbelievably powerful incarnation of the character- one that can easily take out PL 14 Death Gods. This also justifies those instances where she takes out a HUGELY-tough creation, like the Doom Phantom or Queen Metalia.

-When she goes all-out, she picks up a group of different powers. Resurrection is a key one (it shows up more than once), and she can also resurrect OTHERS, making it quite pricey compared to the 2e Resurrection Power from "Regeneration". Her REALLY big powers- Time Travel & the super-huge Corrosion/Blast- require her to die for them to work, a -2 Flaw since well, she has Resurrection. The fight's over if she uses it, so again, it'd better work. Time Travel only comes up a couple times (Queen Serenity sent everyone to be resurrected into the future, along with all the villains), but it's there. So when you add all this together, Usagi is one HELL of a powerful fighter, but her best attacks are mostly locked-up, and she needs her team to do her best work.

-Note the "Fatal" Flaw- it basically takes her out of the fight, but since she's got a Resurrecting super-Device on her, it doesn't matter whenever she "Dies". Seriously, the show's almost Dragon Ball Z-level bad for killing everyone off with zero drama, since we KNOW they can just pop right back to life.

SAILOR MOON R- Part One:
-The "Makaiju Arc" of Sailor Moon was a rather ingenious use of filler. Meant to bridge the gap between the show's first and second seasons while Naoko Takeuchi finished work on the Sailor Moon R/Black Moon Family arc of the manga, it debuted two odd green aliens who started sucking up energy the same way the Dark Kingdom did (likely because the series hadn't shown villains doing anything ELSE, so the writers likely thought that was just the thing all villains in the series did). But this time, it was all for a "good cause": their sacred Makaiju, or "Hell Tree", was slowly dying, and needed energy to survive. In the meantime, the disguised themselves as an orphaned brother & sister, and started interacting with the show's main cast (who had their memories swiftly restored after being resurrected in the first season finale).

-Despite being lovers who went on about their "true love", Ail immediately went after Usagi, while An jumped all over Mamoru, creating tension in the main cast. It led to some interesting and hilarious circumstances, like when they had to babysit an infant, or cook a meal, and I rather enjoyed this "Filler Arc". Fourteen episodes later, they did a face turn and everything was OK.

Powers:

Initiative +4

Defenses:
Dodge +12 (DC 22), Parry +11 (DC 21), Toughness +5, Fortitude +6, Will +3

Complications (Early):
Responsibility (Ail & An)
Disabled (Mute)- Cardians can often only shout out their own name. Others are quite chatty.
Vulnerable (Distractions)- Cardians pretty much ONLY look at the last immediate thing to draw their attention. This makes them easily distracted, to the point of getting negatives to resist having their attention drawn.

Total: Abilities: 44 / Skills: 24--12 / Advantages: 5 / Powers: 20 / Defenses: 13 (94)

-The Cardians are summoned by Ail and his Magic Flute- they spring forth from cards randomly selected by An, and Drain Energy much like Dark Kingdom agents did. These creatures are PL 9s, like the Monsters near the end of the previous season- they can handle groups of Sailors at once. However, this mini-season takes care to wipe out the Monsters-Of-The-Week by varied means- rather than just using their attacks as a set-up for Sailor Moon (who was losing her powers at this time, out of depression at having to become a fighter AGAIN), the Sailors can kill these things with their common attacks. Supreme Thunder even solos one Cardian!

EPISODE 47- PL 9 (106): Leaping +1, Vine Snare 8 (Accurate 5) [12]
-Easily beaten, this Cardian is distracted by Luna, since Sailor Moon was a solo heroine once more at this time.

EPISODE 48- PL 9 (95): "Extendible Horns" Blast 7 (Accurate 5) [1]
-This Minotaur/Satyr-esque character was notable for being in an episode where the non-powered Sailors had to fight it. Mars & Jupiter actually held their own, throwing the Cardian around through the scenery. Makoto judo-flipping Minotauron through a freaking piece of scenery is worth the price of admission alone. The monster soon beats on Sailor Moon, and thus the four Sailors have their memories restored. This gives us one of the better "Sailor Team-Ups" seen, as it's literally "Bubbles obscure, Thunder stuns, and Crescent Beam & Fire Soul combine to exterminate the beast" in about ten seconds. This makes one of the very, VERY rare occasions that a monster is killed by the OTHER girls- not them wearing it down for Sailor Moon.

EPISODE 49- PL 9 (112): "Breath Weapon" Cone Damage 8, Energy Drain has Ranged & Indirect (from above), Claws +2, Leaping +1, Senses 3 (Acute & Extended Scent, Low-Light Vision) [18]
-A bizarre, bright-pink Lion straight out of She-Ra, "Phalion" Energy Drains people with a portable Spinning Wheel thing that Moonlight Knight destroys with a thrown Scimitar. Sailor Jupiter, pissed off over it having injured her friend Kenji, annihilates it with her Supreme Thunder technique, making it one of the few Monster-Of-The-Weeks to be solo'd by a non-Sailor Moon character.

EPISODE 50- PL 9 (103): Snare 8 (Accurate 5) [9]
-This one attacks a Virtual Reality centre, and has tentacles for hair and on its hips. It's actually able to trap the Moonlight Knight (who previously sliced off some tentacles), but Sailor Mars burns the others off. Crescent Beam/Supreme Thunder wipes it out.

EPISODE 51- PL 10 (141): Speed 4 (30 mph), Strength +2, Insubstantial 4, Claws +2, Morph to Monstrous Form, Energy Drain has Area- Visual Perception, AE: Petal Blasts 6 (Multiattack, Accurate 5), AE: Dimensional Travel Attack 8 [47]
-This is one of the most powerful Monsters seen in the series thus far- she dresses like a Japanese maiden, but soon shifts into a monstrous form. She phases through things, Energy Drains entire areas of her vision, and wipes out the entire group of Sailors, leaving Sailor Moon alone. De-powered, she is tossed into another Dimension (the "World within her mind"), where only a conversation with her mother's spirit can send her back at full power. But the monster STILL kicks her ass, displaying even more powers! Only a brand-new weapon and attack- the Cutie Moon Rod's "Moon Princess Halation" attack can stop this Cardian.

EPISODE 52- PL 9 (107): Flight 4 (30 mph), Strength +2, Claws +1 [13]
-Sailor Venus's Crescent Beam proved ineffective, but her new Meteor Shower technique worked alright.

EPISODE 53- PL 9 (114): Energy Drain has Ranged, AE: Cone Area Damage 9, AE: Move Object 8, Flight 4 (30 mph) [20]
-This Cardian was able to whup on the Sailors by using BABIES as human shields! Sailor Mercury, furious over this, unlocks her "Latent Power" and freezes the Cardian, setting it up for demolition.

EPISODE 54- PL 9 (131): Flight 4 (30 mph), Slithering, "Prehensile Hair" Extra Limbs 4, Energy Drain has Multiattack & Ranged, AE: "Powder Spores" Energy Drain w/ Cloud +2, AE: Hair Snare 8 (Accurate 5), AE: Water Blast 8 (Accurate 5) [37]
-Taking part in Sailor Mars's focus episode, this giant topless mermaid has a lot of Area Attacks, but "Fire Soul Bird" stuns it long enough for Sailor Moon's attack.

EPISODE 55- PL 9 (102): "Food Basket" "Chopstick" Strength-Damage +2 & Weaken Toughness 6 (Affects Objects), Seaweed Wrap Snare 8, Leaping +1 [8]
-A food-based Cardian who attacks Makoto when she has a picnic with Seijuro, and An is jealous.

EPISODE 56- PL 9 (100): "Clown" Intimidation +4, "Umbrella- Electrified Snare" Snare 8 (Accurate 5) & Blast 5, AE: Energy Drain, AE: "Spikes Shot From Hat" Blast 5 (Accurate 5, Multiattack) (Easily Removable) [6]
-This terrifying Clown is nonetheless easily defeated- all five Sailors together is pretty overwhelming for a simple PL 9.

EPISODE 57- PL 10 (108): Leaping +2, Strength & Stamina +2, Fighting +2 [14]
-This Cardian is unique in its capability (it messes up all of the Sailors at once, even handling Venus & Mars's brand-new attacks!), and its disobedience- it should be impossible for Cardians to ignore orders, but this one does so gladly, attacking some ducks instead of humans ("NO- NOT THE DUCKS!" Alan cried, in the Original Dub).

EPISODE 58- PL 9 (111): Senses (Radius Sight), Perception +4, Extra Limbs 4, Ranged on Drain [17]
-In the Original Dub, this interesting-looking character shouts "BEWARE FOUR-FACE!" again and again, and had one of the better designs of the crew. Alas, all it did was drain a few people in order to help out the rapidly-fading Makai Tree, and then try the same with Usagi. Her raw goodness, however, overloaded the Tree, causing it to go insane, at which point it killed the Cardian.

Nice work on the Cardians, too. According to the wiki, "Four-Face" can drain energy by throwing petals in addition to by touch (and should probably have Extra Limbs, since they have six arms)

The thing about Jupiter one-shotting a monster reminds me of another thing I like about the versions of Pretty Cure I watched - less emphasis on having the main protagonist finish off the monsters. The task often falls to whichever Cure is the focus of the episode, and they also do a lot of combined attacks. Well, at least in Heartcatch Precure, the one I remember best.

That said, Sailor Moon does better in the heavy drama and badass moments departments. I imagine you're not gonna see a Cure burn down a monster in agonizing fashion right before dying from her own wounds. Precure shows are likely geared towards a younger audience than stuff like Sailor Moon and Magic Knight Rayearth.

Oh, balls. I realized when doing these that I'd neglected to write the "Monster Powers" section, and tried to work from memory. The wikis sometimes aren't thorough, so I didn't check.

Secret (Identity)- Ail transforms himself into Seijuro Ginga and joins the local High School, in order to act undercover and observe humanity. Of course it's in the same class as the Sailors.
Relationship (Usagi)- It's lust at first sight for Ail when he sees Usagi for the first time- despite his love for An, he follows her around and obviously fawns over her beauty.
Rivalry (Mamoru)- He is jealous of Mamoru, who has the attention of both Usagi AND An.
Responsibility (The Makai Tree)
Weakness (Lack of Energy)- Ail & An require Life Energy (the kind received from Draining others) to survive- without it, they will slowly die.

Total: Abilities: 46 / Skills: 34--18 / Advantages: 10 / Powers: 54 / Defenses: 22 (150)

-Ail (pronounced "Eiru" in Japan, which is actually a better name- it sounds like "Ale" in the New Dub) acts like a bit of a stoic, wise figure in the show, contrasting An's more impulsive, emotional nature. Which makes it funnier when he acts like a big, jealous grouch, usually losing his cool over An openly crushing on Mamoru (hypocritically glossing over his lust for Usagi). There's also the AMAZING episode where the girls argue over playing Snow White, with Mamoru playing the Prince and An rigs the draw so she gets the lead role- all of their hard work is for naught when a Cardian attacks and the Sailors have to kill it. And Ail just pouts "I REALLY wanted to be the Prince." He literally sends a monster to ruin the play because he was upset!

-Ail & An are very powerful villains for the series, easily as tough as the Dark Kingdom's Generals. Both can toss out vicious Energy Waves that do a ton of damage (generally disabling the Sailors immediately), and Ail can even use Mind Control.

Relationship (Mamoru)- An openly crushes on Mamoru, even lying and cheating so she can practice a kissing scene with him for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.
Rivalry (Usagi)- An cannot STAND Usagi, and constantly argues with her. They feud over Mamoru.
Responsibility (The Makai Tree)
Weakness (Lack of Energy)- Ail & An require Life Energy (the kind received from Draining others) to survive- without it, they will slowly die.

Total: Abilities: 32 / Skills: 30--15 / Advantages: 9 / Powers: 34 / Defenses: 21 (204)

-An was flighty, immature and impulsive- quite the fun villainess. She openly crushes on Mamoru at school, and feuds with Usagi as a result. Her general personality is a Glinda-like "Imperious-But-Immature Brat", making for a lot of funny scenes. She's drawn interestingly- both her & Ail have full-drawn-in outlines around their eyes, which makes them look very different from all the other characters in the anime.

-An, like Ail, is extremely powerful, able to easily defeat the entire assembled Sailors with their Area Attacks. Nearly all of their episodes involved their "Cardians" (summoned minions from cards) rather than themselves fighting, so not alot of Alt-Effects or Advantages are involved here. An is just as powerful as Ail is, but is FAR cheaper than he is, since she was weaker in almost every other respect, more unlikeable, and got sick easier.

Defenses:

Complications (Early):
Weakness (Lack of Energy)- The Makaiju requires Life Energy (the kind received from Weakening others) to survive- without it, it will slowly die.
Secret (Really the Tree of Life/Light)- The Hell Tree is actually a sentient, noble being, and loves it's creations (Ail & An's people). However, a lack of life energy has turned it into an inanimate state, and certain actions (such as draining the life energy of Sailor Moon) will send it into a berserk rage.

Total: Abilities: -20 / Skills: 14--7 / Advantages: 3 / Powers: 133 / Defenses: 10 (133)

-The Makaiju (translated to the UBER-bad ass "Hell Tree") was a sentient life form that gave birth to a humanoid race of aliens, but they came to fight over its life-giving powers, eventually descending into a civil war that only left two behind- Ail & An. By this point, the Tree was so weakened that it could no longer communicate to its children, who began tearing into human beings for their energy to feed it. In the finale of the "Makaiju Arc", feeding on Sailor Moon's energy drove the Makaiju berserk, and it lashed out, killing Anne and a Cardian. Eventually, access to the Silver Crystal allowed it to speak again, and it explained it's origins, and flew away with Alan & Anne to start anew, this time as a sapling.

-Figuring out exactly where this thing lies was a challenge, but I settled on the mindless, unthinking variant that existed for most of this arc, right up to when the Senshi fought it (and it destroyed them). It's highly powerful and dishes out a hell of a lot of Area Effect damage, which is lethal to this crew of low-Toughness fighters. It's a good thing they went with the "talk it out with the thing" method, because there's no way they were beating it, even though it's super-easy to hit. Once it becomes the Tree of Life/Light again, it gains it's Mental Stats (probably all 20s), ability to give birth (likely not really a power, just like childbirth isn't), plus who knows what else.

The Black Moon Clan

THE FOUR SPECTRE SISTERS:
-The Four Spectre Sisters (known as "The Ayakashi Sisters" in Japan) are an interesting side-note: they work for Rubeus, but Rubeus himself is a mere General to Prince Dimande- hence, the Spectres are like an intermediary "Boss" type. Unlike most Generals, they aren't far above the Sailors- on a one-to-one basis, it's pretty even. The four of them were basically Disposable Minions in the manga, being wiped out very quickly, in order. The anime, having to fill time, naturally used them for their "Templates"- each week, they'd pop up with a new plan to "Corrupt" a Crystal Point in the future Crystal Tokyo, and send one of their Droids out to do it. More hands-on than many Generals, they'd stick around to brawl for a bit. They're seen as pretty comedic figures- fussy, prissy and arrogant, they're image-obsessed and argue with each other like... well, sisters. They're altogether rather silly, though they provide some of the show's best fight scenes, as it's never a Curbstomp Battle the way most Sailor/General fights are.

-The Sisters' powers counter those of the Sailors- Koan wields "Dark Fire", Petz "Dark Thunder", and Berthier "Dark Water". Calaveras uses "Dark Beaut", which is just a fancy name for "She whips people", countering Sailor Venus's Love-Me Chain. In the Original Dub, their names were changed from minerals to... whatever English words the writers could think of. Because I paid less attention to the R "Original Story" stuff online, I often forget just what the hell their names were supposed to be. But Koan became "Catzi" (appropriate because of her kitty-ear haircut), Berthier became "Bertie" (which sounds similar, but dumb), Calaveras became "Avary" (... I dunno), and Petz "Prizma" (which is actually a BIG improvement, given how similar "Petz" is to "Putz").

-In the end, all four Sisters are changed to the side of good. This happens fairly quickly, and with only a little bit of effort- the Sailors pointing out to the Sisters that humans aren't all bad, and that they can be forgiven. Raised in the selfish Black Moon society, the Sisters are doubtful, but won over with only a handful of sweet sentiments. Koan joins first, followed by Berthier, then the other two. Curiously, Petz & Calaveras are ALWAYS paired off in their scheming, even though Petz seems to be the most-senior & leaderly of the Sisters.

-As the Sisters are "Purified", they come to be regular humans with no powers. Their role in the series is small after that- they are briefly seen running a make-up business, arguing with each other all the way.

TV Tropes says thus:
Dark is Evil: Especially in the manga. Never mind their allegiance with the Black Moon, but most of the sisters in the manga specialized in the occult. Koan predicted the future and specialized in telling girls they would die young, Berthier was a dowser, and Calaveras was a channeler who spoke with her sister's spirits after they died.

Responsibility (The Black Moon Family)
Relationship (Rubeus)- Though Rubeus is indifferent and condescending to her, Koan loves him dearly. She is heartbroken when he cruelly shatters a precious gift she bought for him, and is easily twisted into nearly sacrificing herself after failing him.

Total: Abilities: 46 / Skills: 44--22 / Advantages: 13 / Powers: 47 / Defenses: 18 (146)

-Koan here was Mars' opposite number, shooting fire (called "Ice-Fire" in the Original Dub). The most vain of the Sisters, Koan was bratty and petulant, and totally in love with Rubeus, making her an effective slave to his will. She was phenomenally-immature, and wore the dorkiest outfit, kind of robbing her of what might have been intended to be "glamor"- Petz had some asexual style, Calaveras some prettiness, and Berthier was Miss Fanservice, but Koan dressed like what a little girl thinks a pretty adult woman would dress like. A giant pink one-piece ballerina uniform with a friggin' purple skirt and a giant purple hairdo with kitty-ears on it. She really just looks ridiculous.

-She became "purified" by Sailor Moon in the anime (but killed in the manga, which I've noticed is generally less forgiving of EVERYBODY- nobody's purified and everyone's disintegrated there), turning good. This was after a TREMENDOUS episode in which she has her heart broken by Rubeus- he smashes the beautiful gift she bought for him, then sends her to kill Chibi-Usa. When she fails (after a kick-ass fight against Sailor Mars and Yuuichiro, who keep trying to save each other), Rubeus coldly declares that he never loved her, and tells her to commit suicide with a huge bomb. And when THAT fails, she loses her goddamn mind, lashing out wildly with these extendible fingernails- the Sailors avoid them, and are ready to absolutely KILL her, but then SAILOR MARS jumps in the way, taking Jupiter's high-knee to the ribs because she now feels sympathy for the villain. And this is what shocks Koan out of it, and she agrees to be Purified and become a normal human, giving up her old life forever.

-Koan doesn't appear too much after that, but convinces Berthier to join her in the next episode, and the two of them gather up their remaining sisters in the next. Oddly, once she's Purified, she instantly becomes calmer, more rational, and more mature- she's essentially a totally different person. She still argues with her sisters, of course.

-Koan's a decent PL 9, roughly matching what Sailor Mars is capable of at this point (her Burning Mandalah is similarly +9 in damage). I would imagine that most of the Black Moon/Nemesis clan are less costly than the Shitennou, for reasons I explained before- they're not as versatile (possessing one or two attacks and no magic spells), they merely match the Senshi, and tend to have less Skills and Combat Feats. Koan actually has one of the more well-rounded movesets of the Black Moon Family, though- she's fast, athletic, and can use a variety of attacks, including Fingernail Claws, plus TWO "Stock Animation" attacks- her initial "Dark Fire" attack has her do a dramatic stance, with a little "hand flicker" burst, but the other one has her leap into the air, firing repeated Blasts into a circle beneath her. The battle against Sailor Mars before she becomes Purified is one of the show's best, consisting of a lot of dodging, repeated Blasts from both, and Koan even teleports, backflips off a tree, then elbows Mars right in the face.
