Re: Jab's Builds! (Queen Metalia! Ail & An! The Hell Tree! Spectre Sisters!)

Post by Jabroniville »

Yeah, it's a bit of an odd thing. It feels "wrong", yet at the same time, the anime makes it pretty clear the Sisters are roughly tied with the Sailors, though the Sisters have better defenses, as they rarely get hit with attacks. This is what allows Koan to whup on Sailor Mars a bit (that and her superior melee skill and travel abilities- no Sailor can fly).

And of course the Monsters frequently battle 3-4 Sailors at once and not only hold their own, but thrive, until a distraction shows up. That means their PL has to be comparable- PL 10 Droids fighting PL 9 Sailors is a bit more of a fight. But FIVE PL 9 Sailors (well, four PL 9s plus Sailor Moon's higher power) is usually quickly overwhelming. So odd as it looks, I would think that the Droids are more powerful than their masters (Koan is quickly dealt with by all the Sailors, once they've arrived). Just usually less versatile or able to leave the field of battle.

Complications (Early):
Responsibility (The Black Moon Clan)- Prince Dimande wishes to kill "The Rabbit" (Chibi-Usa) and gain the Legendary Silver Crystal, allowing him to take control of Crystal Tokyo in the future.
Enemy (Crystal Tokyo)- The Black Moon Clans refused to be purified by the Legendary Silver Crystal, and instead went into exile.
Relationship (Saphir)- Dimande is extremely devoted to his younger brother, and highly-protective of him. Trying to create a better world for the two of them is used as justification for many of his actions.
Relationship (Sailor Moon)- Dimande is in lust with Neo-Queen Serenity, and continues this interest in her younger self. To the point where he tries to mind control her into having SEX with him (!!!).

Total: Abilities: 68 / Skills: 44--22 / Advantages: 21 / Powers: 60 / Defenses: 18 (189)

-Prince Dimande leads the bad guys in Sailor Moon R, but he's one of those "_____ on His Throne" guys who doesn't really do anything except put certain people in charge. He just kinda sits there, lookin' all stylish in his white clothing and light blue hair, holding a goblet of wine all cool. It turns out he's the leader of Nemesis- The Black Moon- and is trying to get his people to take over Crystal Tokyo, after their clan was banished years ago after refusing to be purified with the rest of the world by Neo-Queen Serenity's Legendary Silver Crystal. Because the world was frozen in ice for some reason, right? I guess.

-It also turns out that Dimande is in love with Serenity, but expresses this in pretty awful ways- when he finds Sailor Moon in modern times, he kidnaps her, takes her to his bedchamber... and tries to MIND CONTROL her into having sex with him! And this is every bit as horrifying as it sounds, with Sailor Moon desperately struggling against him, but her body can't move, so she can only sit there and whimper, with tears flowing from her eyes, while he's about to have his way with her. I mean, JESUS- this is a show that normally does "generic action violence", ya know? Thankfully, Tuxedo Mask flies in (on a... hang-glider) to give Dimande a lecture on consent, to which Dimande hilariously replies "Silence, you self-righteous prick!" Only Esmeraude (who loves Dimande) getting involved allows the heroes to escape.

-Dimande continues to refuse to listen to his little brother Saphir, who wants to give up their silly mission- he's protective of Saphir, but is too obsessed with his mission to just drop it now. And of course he's been taking advice from his Obviously-Betrayal-Crazy Vizier, the Wiseman, who keeps manipulating things. He even manages to get away with executing Saphir, accusing him of traitorous activites- then makes it seem like he did Dimande a favor- "I have spared you the pain of having to execute your own BROTHER!" Dimande spends the rest of the series a bit shell-shocked, until he sees the light (the Sailors point out the Spectre Sisters living happily on Earth, and Saphir discovering Wiseman's treachery), and defends the Sailors against Wiseman, who's now become the Death Phantom.

-Dimande, who had been a pretty serene bad guy until this point, though also a RAPIST MONSTER, redeems himself in the end by that old "Sailor Moon cliche", the "Jump in Front Of The Attack" ploy, taking a Dark Trident meant for Sailor Moon. As Wiseman laughs uproariously (with a friggin' SKULL now showing up underneath his hood!), Dimande suffers a fatal wound... but just smirks and says "Don't underestimate me!" and BLOWS WISEMAN'S ARMS OFF. An empty cloak falls to the ground... but as Dimande is giving his "I'm gonna die" speech to Sailor Moon about the regrets he has and what a mess he caused, Wiseman gathers his powers together and regenerates. And so Dimande dies, and the next episodes are spent fighting off the Death Phantom.

-Prince Dimande is much, much more powerful than his subordinates, judging by his success against Wiseman, and the fact that he nearly handles both Sailor Moon & Tuxedo Mask at once. His Mind Control is a rare power in this series, and even surpasses Sailor Moon's impressive Will Save for a time, though when he tries the "Rape Spell" on her later, she successfully powers through it.

Chibi-Usa

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

CHIBI-USA:
-Chibi-Usa... I have some varying opinions about this one. Like most fans, I generally see her as the start of the "downward slide", the "Jump the Shark" moment, if you will, of this series, as her whiny antics, obvious "this is for the little kids to enjoy" mentality (OK, so the show is FOR little kids, but it shouldn't come at the EXPENSE of the adults, y'know!), manipulation of the other characters for her own ends, etc., were just a massive bring-down. The fact that Sailor Moon S was basically the "Sailor Chibi-Moon Show" once she got ACTUAL POWERS didn't help matters. In Sailor Moon R, she immediately debuts with a lot of adversarial qualities, pulling a GUN on Usagi, and getting between her and Mamoru. And soon she brainwashes the Tsukinos into accepting her as a member of the family, tries to steal Usagi's Silver Crystal, and manhandles Mamo while he & Usagi are on a break.

-Called "Rini" in the Original Dub for being a mini-Serena, her original name is "Chibi-Usa", as she shares the heroine's name, but is smaller ("Chibi" in Japanese), hence takes a different name. The name really kind of bothers me, because that does NOT roll off the tongue in English- in Japanese, it's more like "Cheeb-YOUSA!", but in English, comes out "Chee-Bee-OOSE-ah!". This is one of those moments where they can get away with "Mini-usa" or something (it's not like they call their savior "Tuxedo Kamen", after all).

-Her childishness and arguing with Usagi is a source of a lot of the humor, and DOES get pretty clever (Chibi-Usa attacks Usagi in the tub while searching for the Silver Crystal; later she pisses on Usagi's bed by accident). Even the fact that her later appearances were done by super-cute Canadian voice actress Stephanie Beard, aka Sugar Baybee (who was remarkably hot for someone with the voice of a seven-year old) didn't help. Beard was a bit funny, as she was the ultra-cute host of YTV's The Zone programming block for a number of years, but then quit to become an actress in the States. And she vanished for years (save for one tiny commercial spot, only saying the word "Wicked!"), until all of a sudden popping up in a few things, like Garfunkel and Oats and showing the lion's share of the nudity in that ____ and ____ Need Wedding Dates movie.

-But really, she was quite annoying. The show became increasingly focused on her, the other Sailors didn't get as many focus episodes, and she continued to act like a selfish brat with poor judgement, at one point getting the Sailors captured because she ran off on her own. The villains spent most of the show trying to kill her, but then switched gears when her inner power (when frightened, she set off massive Energy Cylinders into the sky) revealed itself, and they aged her up into the "Black Lady" after giving her the world's lamest bout of brainwashing (they simply removed the memory of a Surprise Party, making her parents look like douches who ignored her birthday). The Sailor Moon equivalent of the "Care Bear Stare" is all it takes to bring her back to normal.

-Chibi-Usa soon reveals why she's been searching for the Legendary Silver Crystal- thinking it could save her mother, she went to grab it... and it disappeared. But it turns out the thing had been inside her all along, and when the Death Phantom nearly overtakes Princess Serenity... Chibi-Usa reveals her OWN Flowing Dress Super-Form, and the two Silver Crystals combined to extinguish the Death Phantom forever. With the day saved, Chibi-Usa begins to return home using her Time Travel Key, and finally comes to terms with modern-day Usagi, acknowledging her as her mother, and sharing a tearful goodbye. Not a bad ending, all in all. But it doesn't make up for "The Chibi-Usa Show" Sailor Moon became.

Total: Abilities: 40 / Skills: 16--8 / Advantages: 15 / Powers: 88 / Defenses: 18 (189)

-Black Lady was created when Chibi-Usa was brainwashed by Wiseman, who realized her hidden power. Changed into an adult with an ultra-Fanservicey display (you see her purple "body outline" complete with butt crack and breast lines- her boobs even expand TOWARDS the screen), she gains a ton of power, and whups ass while easily avoiding the Sailors' half-hearted attacks. But they basically use the "Power Of Love" to win, as she's all "NOBODY LOVES ME!" and they're like "YUH-HUH, WE TOTALLY DO!", and then Tuxedo Mask eats an energy blast meant for Sailor Moon. The Silver Crystal is unleashed, and a few more kind words are all it takes to transform Wicked Lady back- she'd been around for 2-3 episodes, featuring the diminishment of the Black Moon Clan (Saphir was killed halfway through).

-Black/Wicked Lady was incredibly dangerous, but largely because of unpredictable, varied Area Attacks combined with the Sailors' unwillingness to kill her. Black Energy, a Mirror Blast, weird little domes of energy that blasted for from birdies she racketed towards her targets (producing a CONTINUOUS Damage effect!)- this was a lot of dangerous stuff to low-toughness characters like Sailor Moon & friends.

Total: Abilities: 68 / Skills: 50--25 / Advantages: 17 / Powers: 221 / Defenses: 18 (349)

The Least-Surprising Betrayal In History:
-Obvious to pretty much everyone watching, the mysterious Wiseman was clearly an evil manipulator who was gonna betray the other villains sooner or later. As the Big Bad of Sailor Moon R, he first appeared as a seated, hooded figure who waved his hands around a magic crystal ball, giving advice and making predicts to the Black Moon Clan- Crimson Rubeus and his flunkies. It turned out that he was working for Rubeus's boss, Prince Dimande, and was the primary advisor in this whole "you need to find the Silver Crystal/Kill Chibi-Usa/etc." plan of theirs.

-And of course it turned out he was motivated by his own interests. Unable to do so himself, he had Saphir spend months constructing the Malefic Black Crystal- a Device capable of spreading this vague "Dark Energy" around (though this plot point was rapidly ignored in favor of "Kill the Sailors"). Eventually, he sets it up so that a "Dark Gate" is opened over Earth, the Black Moon invades, and Wiseman himself grabs the Crystal in a massive power-grab. His final goal: The destruction of all life.

-Just WHY he wants to kill everything is largely ignored- he's just kind of treated as if he was Death itself, and that's kind of just his thing. When Saphir figures out his game (despite presumably being a wise man, Wiseman failed to understand that openly bragging about your impending betrayal of Prince Dimande, TO YOURSELF, in a room with an open door, was a bad idea), Wiseman attacks, and eventually kills him. He further manipulates Dimande ("I have spared you the pain of having to execute your OWN BROTHER!"), transforms Chibi-Usa into the Black Lady when he discovers her power, and then uses his powers to try and kill the Sailors. He reveals that the "Wiseman" persona is just a construct, and that his true name is the Death Phantom- destroyer of stuff. With a skull for a face and everything.

-Sailor Moon opposes the Malefic Black Crystal with her own Legendary Silver Crystal- however, it appears that her power actually FALTERS before his! She is beaten back by the dark energy and nearly dies... until we discover what happened to the Silver Crystal of the future timeline. Chibi-Usa, when trying to use it to help her mother, ended up ABSORBING it into her own body- she therefore is able to whip it out in this moment of need, transform into a "Princess Serenity" of her very own, and the combined forces of TWO Silver Crystals are able to easily overwhelm the Death Phantom, disintegrating him once and for all.

The Problem With Wiseman:
-Honestly... he was a bit one-note and forgettable. Similar to Queen Metalia in the first season, he was just a "Generic Big Evil", with his minions providing all the legwork and personality. Not the worst thing in the world, since someone this powerful can't interact with the main cast without killing them instantly. Despite probably being more powerful than Beryl/Metalia (he overpowers Princess Serenity; Metalia was simply skooshed), his menace didn't feel as strong or deadly, as he typically only had a villain killed here or there. The stakes didn't feel as high (though they probably were). I found, even in the late 1990s, that Death Phantom was nobody's favorite bad guy- fans tended to take to the Magnificent Bitch Queens of the series (Beryl, Nehellenia, Sailor Galaxia), while he was kind of ignored. That his design was just "skull-faced dude in a cloak, with lava-lamp arms" probably didn't help.

Death Phantom's Stats:
-Wiseman was actually not REALLY that powerful until he got hold of the Malefic Black Crystal- when he battles Sailor Moon & Prince Dimande, his Blasts can only stalemate the Prince, and even TUXEDO MASK can counter one using a single rose (because his botany skills are epic, yo). It takes a distraction/"Standard Sailor Moon Sacrifice" for him to kill Dimande, as a Dark Trident fires through him when he leaps in front of the attack meant for Sailor Moon, his beloved. But once he grabs that Black Crystal, he gains all the damaging powers of the Silver Crystal, minus the drawbacks- it actually takes TWO of the things to kill him.

-Otherwise, Wiseman Blasts away as a PL 12, can fly, Regenerate (Dimande blows his arms off, but they quickly grow back) and brainwash Chibi-Usa by rewriting her memories into being the angry Black Lady.

I remember finding Sugar super annoying. My brother had a huge crush on her, but her voice was just too much for me. I can only imagine that when she screams it's, like, ultrasonic and any dogs within a mile go mental.

-This Flower Monster was INSANE- providing one of the best fight scenes in the show's history, it dashes out of nowhere just SLAMS Sailors Mars & Mercury into a security gate, then proceeds to lay a whupping on the four minor Sailors at once. Their attacks nearly all miss, every hit she lands does a ton of damage, and eventually, she traps all four in simultaneous Energy Drain Snares. Only Sailor Moon (KO'd in the early going trying to save Chibi-Usa) can save the day, slicing the vines with her Tiara (one of the few times it's seen outside of the first season), then blows it away with Moon Princess Halation.

-This thing's design is AWESOME, too. Basically a fanservicey chick with flowing locks and a bra that only clasps at the back, it's also menacing, green, and scuttles about like a Plant-Bug-Centaur thing. And she laughs all the time, with glowing red eyes.
-The Monsters appear later on, too, coming out in massive hordes unleashed by the flowers on Fiore's asteroid. But by this point, they're nothing more than Mooks- all five Sailors are suddenly able to use Area Attacks on them- ones which not only hit with ease, but cut a swath through huge groups of them. They're only able to "win" by combining forces and literally slamming down with hundreds of them at once- an impromptu Area Attack that takes out the four, leaving only Sailor Moon.

-The Flower Monster is extremely tough, being of limited mind (like most Monsters in the series), but titanic power- hitting a +8 Snare and doing +5 Unarmed, all with high accuracy and incredible defense- the Sailors can barely draw a bead on it in the first battle. The later Flower Monsters are basically Sitting Targets and don't even seem to dodge- they're barely PL 3 Mooks at that point.

Sailor Moon R

Post by Jabroniville »

Sailor Moon R- The Movie:
Yes, they made three movies for the Sailor Moon franchise, each being pretty iffy in terms of continuity. The animation is of course glorious compared to anything you'd see in the cartoon, with bodies having both shading AND highlights, and the frame-rate going up a bit, too, with lots of glamorous shots and better posing than the "straight-on" stuff from a more mundane TV episode.

* So we see a clip of a very young Mamoru sharing a rose with a mysterious other boy, who then disappears in a puff. And then, in the modern day, the Sailors' little day out at a botanical garden is interrupted by the same guy, who appears to be VERY touchy-feely with Mamoru. Finding out that Usagi is his girlfriend, he shoves her in anger and then disappears. This "Fiore" fellow oddly has the EXACT same design as Ail from Sailor Moon R, both the Alien Form and Human Form.

The girls have a hilarious discussion about what this means- Sailor Mars teases Usagi about Mamo possibly being "friendly" with the stranger, and then even AMI goes "I guess Mamoru is popular with the guys, too...", shocking even Rei . "Ami, you and your dirty little mind!" appears in the original dialogue, while the dub drops in a "not that there's anything WRONG with that!"

We get a nice moment in a flashback between Usagi & Mamo, where he talks about his parents being dead, but confesses that "maybe I was meant to be along, so that I could meet you, Usako". Craziness is soon afoot, though, as people have their energy drained by a mysterious flower, which then turns them into vine-controlled zombies. A brief struggle is ended by Sailor Mars doing a CRAZY ninja-jump, then whipping out dozens of "Evil Spirit Be Exorcized!" papers at once, dropping the entire crowd! Soon, the flower turns into a fanservicey Flower Centaur Chick, who just SLAMS Ami & Rei into the security gate of a closed store! Seriously, that damn impact shook the "screen"! The Sailors all transform and fight the thing.

Sailor Moon arrives and they're finally able to kill it after a HELL of a fight, at which point Fiore descends, transforms into an alien dude (Ail's design, but with a new outfit), and reveals a "Xenian Flower" on his lapel- a sexy topless chick with Godiva Hair... about six inches high. Luna & Artemis seem to know what it is, too. He EASILY destroys the Sailors using deft dodging and Invisible Energy Blasts, but is confronted by Tuxedo Mask, recognizing him as his Mamo. Fiore gets angry and attacks with a sword, but Mamo saves Usagi... even leaping in the way of Death Fingernails, which deliver mortal wounds. Fiore, shocked at this sacrifice (he obviously doesn't watch the show), teleports himself & Mamoru away.

Luna & Artemis are now able to do their "Now That It's Important, We Remember Stuff" exposition, explaining that a Xenian Flower attaches itself to weak-minded people, filling them with an evil energy that eventually consumes entire worlds- "the number of planets the Xenian Flower has destroyed in this galaxy are too numerous to count". Sailor Moon is too heartbroken to care, but Chibi-Usa and the others convince her to buck up. They do a "Sailor Teleport" to an asteroid floating in outer space, revealing that... Sailor Teleport can transport MILLIONS of miles, AND give them Life Support? Yikes.

Fiore of course begins monologuing, stating that his plot is to send Xenian seeds to Earth, at which point they will exterminate all life on the planet. And then he summons literally hundreds of Flower Monsters to attack the girls! At which point our heroines magically gain Area Attacks where none existed before, and Sailor Jupiter's "Supreme Thunder!" kills over twenty monsters with a single arc, and the others act in kind. Mars in particular gets a CRAZY elaborate version of "Fire Soul!", shooting fire between her hands and then doing a pirouette amidst a burning spiral. Even Sailor Moon does the "Shoots out a Line, then pivotes to wipe out hundreds" thing. The monsters coalesce into a giant undulating tree-thing, crashing down on the Sailors just after Mars grabs Moon and throws her out of the way.

Sailor Moon tries to give up in order to save her friends (Mars screams at her, tears in her eyes, calling her a coward), but her sacrifice actually causes Fiore's brainwashing to nearly break. The Xenian Flower re-takes control by wrapping herself around him like a stole made of arms, and nearly kills her, telling her that she's a liar who just takes from everyone. The Sailors ultimately come to her defense, remembering all the time they spent alone before Usagi befriended them (even MARS- "If we'd never met her- we'd all be alone!"), and Tuxedo Mask throws a rose into his chest, nearly killing him.

His asteroid, now dead, prepares a suicide attack into earth ("If I can't have you, then I'll destroy the Earth with me"), but Sailor Moon unleashes her "Princess Serenity" form, meaning she's doomed. The other Sailors try to stop her, but she slows the descent and the asteroid breaks apart- Fiore (and his flower) is vaporized, realizing the error of his ways (witnessing that the flower Mamo gave him as a gift years ago was given to him by a toddler-aged Usagi, and that Usagi didn't "steal him" away- she allows him to be happy). The Sailors & Mamo mourn their friend (Mars is, naturally, inconsolable and by far the most bereft), but Fiore's last act is to give his Mamoru the power to return Usagi to life. And everyone cries, as the day is saved.

Very nice little movie. It's only an hour long, preventing too much time-wasting, so the editing is sharp. The animation and fight scenes are PHENOMENAL, easily crushing that of the show. It's basically out of continuity (nobody comments on Fiore's familiar appearance, nor the Black Moon Clan that should be part of their lives at this point), but hits all of the marks of the show- grumpy Mars, bratty Chibi-Usa, the girls' devotion to each other, True Love (tm), a villain who learns the error of his ways (and dies in the process), and some Noble Sacrifices (actually, MULTIPLE ones!).

And the Xenian flower is voiced by An's voice actor in the original Japanese track.

-Fiore is the villain of the Sailor Moon R movie, and quite curiously, looks exactly like Ail from the first part of R's TV series. This is sort of explained by a director as a "retelling" of R, but it really isn't. It's really quite peculiar, because even his HUMAN form is identical to Seijuro Ginga (Ail's human form). Fiore comes down to Earth clearly obsessed with Mamoru, to the point where it seems like a crazy, stalkery, lover's crush. Thankfully, the characters mention this in-universe so it doesn't become a fandom in-joke for decades.

-Fiore has been obsessed with Mamo for years, after an encounter as children, when he'd been floating through the stars for eons, and Mamoru had recently been orphaned. Gifted with a rose by Mamo, Fiore considered their deep friendship a life-bond, and so was quite pissed when he returned to Earth and found him in the arms of Usagi "Sailor Moon" Tsukino. Acting abusive and crazy (Mamoru thought their relationship was a dream, and definitely has no feelings beyond friendship at this point), he ALSO turned out to be controlled by the genocidal Xenian Flower, which wanted to absorb all the energy on Earth and destroy it. Fiore's monster nearly took out the Sailors, and he himself crushed their efforts to stop him- when Tuxedo Mask leapt in front of a fatal Fingernail Attack, he was grievously injured, and only a chemical bath on Fiore's asteroid could save him.

-The Sailors finally attack on his asteroid, and he's again quite dangerous, but not enough that a second try isn't more effective- he uses his Mooks to his advantage. Ultimately, though, it's Tuxedo Mask's rose that upends him- the rose hits him square in the chest. He brings his dead asteroid into Earth's orbit, planning to destroy the entire planet ("If I can't have you, then I'll destroy the Earth with me"), but Sailor Moon sacrifices herself using the Silver Crystal, and saves the world. Vaporized, Fiore understands only in the end that Mamo & Usagi's connection is just as deep, and that she was a lifesaver for him (in fact, Mamo's rose to Fiore was initially a gift from an adorable Toddler Usagi, who'd just become a big sister). Feeling badly, he gives Mamoru a parting gift- a nectar that will return his love to life. So like a LOT of Sailor Moon villains, he gets the Last-Minute Redemption story, dying to save the day.

-Fiore was incredibly powerful and dangerous in the movie, easily able to dodge all of the Sailors's attacks (even dodging Jupiter a lot), smashing them all into the scenery with his Energy Blasts, which pretty much ended up being one-shots. His Fingernails almost killed Tuxedo Mask (curiously, they're more effective that his Summoned Sword). At PL 11, he's a moderate between the Generals and the Big Bads- his versatility is a dangerous weapon.

All Done!

Post by Jabroniville »

And that does it for my Sailor Moon builds! It's a bit of a shame to stop before I got every character, but I didn't want to try and build the characters I was most unfamiliar with having not seen those episodes. Since I just got both sets for Sailor Moon S, I can start the long haul of watching those 38 episodes and taking MORE anally-retentive notes about the series! In the meantime, the old builds should do for now:

Sailor Chibi-Moon
Sailor Neptune
Sailor Pluto
Sailor Saturn
Sailor Star Fighter
Sailor Star Healer
Sailor Star Maker
Sailor Uranus
Sailor Galaxia
The Witches Five

* Most of them should hold up okay- I was actually quite surprised to find out that my "All-New" builds of the Sailors were more or less similar to the original builds from like 2011- aside from the elevated PLs (the Sailors included their Super StarS Special Attacks and had hit PL 10 by that point), they were about the same.

Hah, I remember Carlos (her co-host) said that literally every person he met would ALWAYS ask him "is that her real voice?" :).

And man, I forgot how much fun it was being AHEAD on builds. I was way ahead last year, and so I got to build a lot of OCs (many of which I'm just now posting), but after a point, some effort-intensive builds cut down my lead. Only now, thanks to the Spider-Man re-posts (which actually still took a lot of time, owing to having to research guys with insane histories), am I back up to where I used to be.

Being ahead allows me to indulge my weird Build ADD (the one that manifested when I first started doing builds, where I'd post a Sailor Moon character, then an X-Men Jobber, then Spider-Man, then Captain Scarlet, then...). So I've been working on my next few projects simultaneously, allowing me to build Brute Force/Heavy Metal, Squadron Supreme, WeaponLord and a few other things ALL AT ONCE instead of having to do it one after the other.

So now that the Sailor Moon builds are done (until I watch all of Sailor Moon S), I can start my next projects:

BRUTE FORCE/HEAVY METAL (a ridiculous Marvel book that features animals wearing cybernetic power armor)
SQUADRON SUPREME
MARVEL- THE LETTER "W"
WEAPONLORD

And a few other random things! It'll be fun :)!

Re: Jab's Builds! (Chibi-Usa! The Death Phantom! Fiore!)

Post by Jabroniville »

One thing I find interesting about Sailor Moon as a whole is that it actually took a really long time to create Sailors for all of the Planets. Like, the manga very nearly ended with the first "Season", meaning we'd have only gotten five. Sailor Moon R, with its huge focus on the future and all this stuff going on, dealt almost entirely with Chibi-Usa and only barely introduced Sailor Pluto (who didn't receive any real characterization in the anime). So Sailor Moon S is the one that finally gave identities to Sailors Uranus, Neptune & Saturn, as well as giving Pluto a real voice.

Ultimately, all debates about which seasons were the best tend to hedge on Sailor Moon or Sailor Moon S. People generally like R and Sailor StarS, with SuperS being considered the worst. It'll be interesting to watch S with a modern perspective and see how it goes. That's generally the one that was most-affected by censorship, as that season dealt with a device called The Holy Grail, referred to The Silence (Apocalypse), and also involved an incredibly-prominent lesbian couple. Naturally, S is extremely well-known to the LGBT community and extremely beloved for it- pop culture actually has very, very few gay couples as prominent as the one between Uranus & Neptune.

So we'll see how long it takes me to watch that season! Sadly, I watch TV like I do builds- off and on, and frequently getting distracted in the middle. It takes me AGES to watch anything (which is why I almost never stat TV shows). But as much as I hate leaving builds off... it's also a good thing. Sailor Moon builds actually take quite a while, and most of the "big names" are dealt with quickly (I never want to spread out the important characters with the Sailors like I do with many other builds- they're best read one after the other, so you can compare them more easily). This means that the builds get less interesting and in-depth as time goes on (especially once you hit the Witches Five and the Dead Moon Circus or whatever they were called). It's probably best to "stagger out" the seasons.

So in a few months, you'll see the Sailors again. With some new notes for the main girls (hm, maybe re-post them? Or just edit in new commentary to the old ones?), all-new builds for Sailors Pluto, Uranus, Neptune & Saturn, and builds for their enemies.

Fun Fact: This past set is the first time I've ever done builds for Black Lady, The Death Phantom, Prince Dimande, Saphir, Esmeraude, Fiore, The Flower Monster, or any of the Monster-Of-The-Week one-offs. I was actually quite surprised, because I'd assumed that I'd previously given stats for the Death Phantom at least. I mean, I'm a pretty big completist, and I'd statted his minions. But him and the "inner" Black Moon Clan were left out!

Brute Force

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

BRUTE FORCE:
-It absolutely blows my mind that this ridiculous comic is so obscure. Brute Force came out as a Limited Series about a band of animals that gained cybernetic armor that gave them both super-powers and sentience, making them a SUPERHERO team! So like, this sentient Dolphin, Kangaroo, Lion, Bear & Eagle all band together and fight evil, including a team of cyborg animal BAD GUYS. This is completely batshit, except you know goddamn well that if this had come out in the 1980s, featured Frank Welker & Peter Cullen in the voice cast, and been released alongside a half-decent toyline, kids would have EATEN THIS UP, and to this day we'd be talking about a potential Brute Force movie, debating which alternate-color-scheme version of Wreckless was the best, and arguing over the merits of the 1980s "classic" Brute Force versus the late '90s "update" and the 2000s movies.

-What's funny, too, is that I was gonna make this big point about how Transformers-like their names are. These guys have this awesome, '80s-style names like Wreckless, Uproar and Tailgunner. These just SCREAM Transformers. So of course I check Google, and sure enough- SIMON FURMAN was the writer of this series. aka the guy who did all the Marvel TF comics.

-According to Koroko Mystia's research, the book was released because Marvel was making a ton of money on licensed comics of toys (Transformers and G.I. Joe were doing GANGBUSTERS), and realized that if they made their OWN stuff, maybe they could get toy companies to agree to design toys for it! And thus, they could OWN the very characters, instead of having to buy licenses from others! A not-bad idea... except this was pretty dorky. And failed. After four issues, Brute Force disappeared, never to be seen again...

-Until of course Deadpool brought them back, because he does a lot of stuff like hang around with forgotten loser characters (Hellcow, anyone?).

One interesting thing about SuperS: In the manga, the Amazoness Quartet were actually transformed/brainwashed Sailor Senshi, the "Asteroid Senshi". For whatever reason, this plot point was not in the anime, but I assume it'll be in Crystal whenever they get to that arc.

Also, regarding Brute Force, the group's return in the Deadpool bi-annual actually had quite a few inconsistencies compared to the original issues. For example, no mention is made of what happened to Brute Force's creator, Dr. Pearce. Assumedly he was arrested or something. Plus, some of the members have different names and have personality changes. For example, Surfstreak is now "Dr. Echo", and Wreckless is now simply "Bear" (because he "can't understand anything else") and was made dumber.
