Background
That something crashed in the desert near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947 is well known, but most are unaware it was a Skrull scout ship.
Velmax and his commanding officer Zuhn were sent on an observation mission to Earth, for the purposes of conquest and annexing the planet into the Skrull empire. While observing the Earth over the American Southwest, they were detected by an American Airforce jet. The incursion damaged their ship and they crashed in Roswell, New Mexico. Recovering the from the crash, Velmax and Zuhn were discovered by a soldier named Jacob Sinclair, who shot Zuhn and then tried to flee, ending in a fatal car crash. Velmax decided to continue his mission by co-opting Sinclair's identity. He then placed Zuhn in a Med-Pod before military officials arrived. Posing as Sinclair, Velmax used a cover story to avoid incarceration and continued his mission. Using Sinclair's position Velmax joined the LA division of the Strategic Scientific Reserve and rising high into the ranks of what would eventually become SHIELD. Velmax then used his position to try and relocate his ship and the med-pod that contained Zuhn so he could try and find a way back home. However, over the years Velmax began to love American culture and rethink his position on the Skrull conquest of the Earth. He left his commander in the facility in hopes of keeping his adopted home safe.
Playing the long game and aging more slowly than humans; Velmax began to establish other identities, one of which was his own son. As Jacob Jr. and began to live a more "normal" life. He became an insurance salesman and married a woman named Jacqueline. Much to his surprise Jacqueline became pregnant and seemed to give birth to a perfectly normal human boy; Jackson. Velmax soon disappeared into one of his other lives leaving Jacqueline to raise the boy on her own.
Jackson (or Jax to his friends) grew up a normal kid, ignorant of his heritage. Until his late teens, he discovered his powers. His father, who had been keeping tabs on Jax and his life, soon appeared to him and informed him of his origins. Jax decided to use his abilities to help people but is still trying to come to grips with the true nature of his heritage. He didn't ask to be some kind of alien freak and would rather be able to reassume a normal life.

Jackson can assume any myriad number of shapes. He can become larger and stronger and grow claws/horns/spines to great effect.
Due to the Skrulls genetic disposition to "blend in" and assume various roles, Jackson has a natural aptitude for different skill-sets, despite no formal training.

This may be something the GM wouldn't care about or just preference, but your bio-weapons, which I take to mean to claws and spikes and teeth etc Jackson can morph in to attack with, should probably have the Variable Descriptor tagged on to cover the variance of how exactly he attacks or which natural weapon be bringing to bare. Variable Descriptor: Natural weapons would probably be enough, but again, that may just be a Gmail preference thing and not necessary.

Hey all,

I've had a few busy days, tomorrow included. Retail and holidays. I will start going over the builds to see if any have specific issues that might need tweaking.

I will be inviting five to join the game. I'm being a tad slow and deliberate ... as I have a 10 day family vacation in Florida third week of July. I want to go over submissions during my vacation and start the game by approximately the beginning of August.

PS: Could be a generic attack or a specific descriptor. Both could have their benefits and/or drawbacks. Unless specified I assume generic.

I can think of someone you've forgotten ;)

Anyways, background is finally done; apologies both for the delay in getting this up, and rough prose, but I have been particularly unwell the past few days, and itstill feels a bit like there are bacteria tap-dancing on my brain.

'Ronan was born in England to two geneticists, Aurelie and Alexander. Life was good in these early years; even though his parents were extremely dedicated to their work, they always managed to find the time to show him how much they loved him.

Not long after he turned 8, his parents were head-hunted for a new cutting-edge research project in Switzerland; there was never really any question in their minds, the bleeding-edge was where they thrived. Even though it meant leaving all of his friends behind, the transition was a fairly smooth one for Ronan, he was still young enough to be fairly mutable, and Romandy was his mother's place
of birth - he'd grown up learning to speak French just as well as English. Things quickly settled back into a happy rhythm, with Ronan spending many a day dreaming about growing up to lead the UN, bringing the world together, united in peace and prosperity.

No project lasts forever, and his parents eventually ended up back doing more "mundane" work. Then, in Ronan's 14th year, a new opportunity presented itself, this time in the 'States. This transition was a little rougher, he was older, for one, and the US featured a number of strange concepts like legally restricted road crossing, armed police, and some genius in American history who decided it would be a great idea for inner and outer legwear to have the same name. Sooner or later things settled down, as they always do; friends were made, time moved on. Then, stumbling back home in the middle of the night from a friend's 18th, HYDRA took him. In his alcohol-fogged state it barely even registered. He never found out what HYDRA was doing in that alley; whether the attack was simple opportunism, or whether he was specifically targeted for some reason. Under the gentle ministrations of HYDRA, such questions quickly became irrelevant; beatings, electrocution, injections, surgery - all became commonplace as the HYDRA scientists tried anything and everything to imprint the power of the Tesseract into him. The brief interludes when he was allowed to sleep, and attempt to patch himself up, took on an almost reverential aspect in his perspective; sleep a blessed relief, bandaging his injuries an almost meditative process.

Suddenly, several months later, something finally "took". There was a bright flash, blinding pain, and then nothing. He eventually regained consciousness to the sound of alarms, and the somewhat panicked movement of what must of been most of the base's personnel. Later he learned that the moment of annealment had released a burst of energy sufficient to reduce a 30ft. sphere of the base to nothing but dust, with the final damage toll being much greater, as the sections of the base nearest the blast collapsed due to structural instability.

Despite the destruction, the surviving HYDRA scientists were ecstatic that they had finally succeeded at their goal, and a new training program was quickly implemented in order to determine the extent of his new capabilities. The excitement was short-lived, however, as the scientist quickly found themselves unable to deduce the cause of the success; many of his fellow prisoners were used and discarded in the following months, as their ever-more frustrated efforts to solve the riddle took their toll. As for his powers, whilst he was never again able to reproduce the level of energy he output during his first moments of power, they soon discovered that energy projection was just one of his new abilities; flight, teleportation, and telekinesis all featured, and, incredibly, he even appeared to be able to create matter out of thin air, although they later figured out he was actually performing some kind of controlled energy to matter conversion process - a no less incredible feat.

This all went on for many more months, until one day he found himself awake in a way he had been in a very long time. He didn't know what was happening, but their was a strong undercurrent of fear in the air; in their state of panic, it seemed someone had given him an insufficient dose of the drugs they used to keep him docile. The drugs were strong, so it still wasn't enough to let him use his powers, but now he was aware and alert; just waiting for an opportunity to finally free himself. The opportunity came the very next day - as he was being escorted back from the containment facility where he was tested, the supervising doctor completely forgot to administer the drug cocktail, too distracted by whatever new crisis had arisen from the crumbling edifice that HYDRA had become in the aftermath of the [ ] event. Trying as hard as he could to act dopey, he let himself be led back to his cell, and waited for the guards to leave, then gathered his power and unleashed it at the wall of his cell. The effect was like introducing an avalanche to a sheet of wet paper - the destruction was total. Stunned by the force of the blast, Ronan looked around dully, and noticed the last surviving test subject - James? - lying in the debris, unconscious or dead, he couldn't tell. He never stopped to find out either, as at that moment, an entire platoon of soldiers came charging around the corner. He blasted the fist few guards, and then the ceiling above, and then ran, never looking back. He kept right on running until he collapsed from exhaustion.

The SHIELD squad sent to investigate the base found him a few miles from the away, and recognizing him as a HYDRA prisoner from the garb he wore, took him in for rehabilitation and questioning. During this process several strange anomalies that occurred in his vicinity led them to suspect that he might be something more than just another test subject. They brought Doctor Jennifer Hunter in to investigate. A trained doctor and psychologist, as well as a SHIELD agent, she was the ideal person to both help Ronan re-adjust, and find out who, or what, he really was. It took her a long time, but eventually she broke through to him, and found out what had really been going on in that facility. After a great deal more time, he even let her take blood and skin samples, and gave her a small demonstration of his powers (all of which was part of the Index-ing process, although she was forbidden from disclosing that information, for fear of how he would react).

Some time later he was finally cleared for release, and by his request, brought back to his parents. They were, of course, ebullient, having assumed him dead; there had even been a funeral. With the help of SHIELD, his return was kept relatively quiet, and, once again happy in a way he'd forgotten was even possible, Ronan set about attempting to assemble something resembling a normal life. To that end, he got himself a place at [ ] college, studying theoretical physics; now that his mind was no longer flooded by drugs and pain, his scientific interest had resurfaced, along with a driving curiosity about the nature of his powers.

Over the next six years, he completed both his degree, and then a doctorate, through all of which he never stopped seeing Doctor Hunter, her skill as a councillor proving invaluable in helping him deal with the long term consequences of his imprisonment. [...]'

I've left the ending blank for the time being, I didn't know whether you'd prefer if he was drawn into the new team via Doctor Hunter (and thus has not yet revealed himself/his powers to the world at large), or if you'd prefer him to be brought back to SHIELD's attention via the sort of incident previously discussed.

Calling party foul on Camus ;)

Thanks for the linkage ... I'll repost it at the beginning of the thread later (on phone) for easier reference.
Saturday expect to see first of Build analysis ... initially just looking for anything : I don't want to say broken : just stuff I'm not comfortable with GMing. I'll get into the math-fu afterwards.

There should be an MCU News channel Special Report posted this weekend also ... something to give everyone a look at my narrative style and a peek behind the first curtain ;)

So this is sort of very Marvel Netflix version of an obscure-ish existing character, Captain Ultra. While he first appeared in Fantastic Four, he's much more frequently (liberal use of frequently) appeared alongside Defenders and Avengers characters, so I'm fairly sure he's MCU fair game. The power set is basically the same (ish) and lots of classic elements of the original character are at the very least re-imagined, but the character background and characterization is basically new/original and mostly Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D./Marvel Netflix series inspired. The comic book version rather dramatically went from kind of a total goober pre-Civil War to, quoting Star Lord out of context here, "100% a dick" post-Civil War, so sort of shying away from that.

COMPLICATIONS:
Accident: Griffin is extremely new to being enhanced but has a fairly broad array of somewhat potent abilities to wrap his head around, with perhaps not the best choice of mentors. So, mistakes get made, things get broken.
Motivations: Acceptance, Doing Good and Fame: Griffin is a genuinely good-natured, if occasionally a bit too clownish, kind of guy. He doesn't have a quest for vengeance, thirst for justice, or guilty conscious driving him to be a hero/vigilante, he has just always been inclined to help others when he can. Of course, on the other hand, he's also always been a bit of an approval-seeking, attention sponge too.
Phobia/Disability - Fire/PTSD: Griffin sometimes suffers from PTSD-type symptoms related to fragmented memories of severe childhood trauma which are often triggered by the sight of open flames, sometimes other things, but mostly flame.
Relationship and Responsibility - Family and Work: Griffin works jobs for his adoptive father's plumbing company, more-so during breaks between semesters, as he does have a tuition and living expenses to pay, and his adoptive parents are not simply footing his bills. Griffin's status as an enhanced individual may be costing his family business too, but if it is, his parents haven't brought it up.
Relationship/Responsibility - School, Friends, and Other Work: Griffin is a somewhat struggling undergraduate college senior, with a major in theater, though much of his coursework is online this year (at the suggestion of his major advisor). He also occasionally works stand-up and is a member of improv group, though those relationships have been quite strained.
Relationship - Mentor (sort of): Griffin has attempted to forge a mentor/mentee relationship with fellow enhanced New Yorker, Jessica Jones. However, its really more of an occasional free labor in exchange for being repeatedly trash-talked type of situation.

BACKGROUND
Griffin Gogol, or Ultra, is a genetically engineered and experimentally modified human, created by doctors Barbara and George Thomas in the mid-90s as part of their efforts at using the genetic material of the G.H. specimen along with research data on childhood developmental modification experiments going back to the earliest days of the Cold War to produce uniquely enhanced humans. The Thomas' were Hydra sleeper agents working within S.H.I.E.L.D. before deciding to strike out on their own with stolen samples of the M.H. specimen, though they maintained contact with various specific past associates afterwards. Notably, the focus of their research was somewhat eschewed from various attempts at simply recreating the results of the fabled WWII Super Soldier Serum, as they were more interested in unlocking the superhuman potential of the mind.

The Thomas' set up a secret laboratory in upstate New York where they produced at least a half-dozen test subjects, including the boy who would one day be named Griffin and his twin sister. Despite the fact that these children were, for the most part, genetically their own offspring, the Thomas' treated them little better than lab rats in their experiments to produce enhanced human beings. Most of them were deemed failures and disposed of without a second thought, but the twins exhibited numerous phenomenal gifts, including a psychic rapport with each other. However, the Thomas' came to view this rapport as possibly impeding the twins individual growth and thus decided to sever it by callously euthanizing one of them, while keeping samples of their DNA for future use. Griffin's sister apparently drew the sort straw.

Despite having been chemically sedated prior to murder of Griffin's sister, both twins were mentally awake as she died, sharing the experience through their psychic bond. The impact of his sister's passing resulted in the then eight-year Griffin overcoming his sedation and going on a terrible super-powered rampage that blew the Thomas' lab apart, destroyed their research, and ultimately claimed the life George Thomas. Barbara Thomas only escaped the night alive, albeit comatose and with severe burns covering much of her body, because she managed to enact the fail safe behavioral conditioning she and her husband had programmed into each of their test subjects in the event something ever went terribly wrong.

Eventually the plumes of black smoke on the horizon caused distant neighbors of the Thomas' to contact the authorities, who descended upon the ruined residence. However, the house the Thomas's had used as a laboratory was not legally in their name and no records could be found to identify the various corpses found on the property or the two survivors, the older of whom could not be awoken from her coma. When the Griffin regained consciousness, he was of no help to investigators either. The combination of the trauma of that nights events and the behavioral conditioning Barbara Thomas triggered had rendered him seemingly powerless and essentially also an amnesiac. Thus the circumstance of what exactly happened to the boy's family became somewhat of a local unsolved mystery.

Griffin was placed into foster care with and later adopted by the Gogols, who where also the one's who named him Griffin. With no recollection of his powers, torturous childhood, the loss of his sister, or the destruction he'd caused, Griffin was basically just an average little boy. After being taken in by the the Gogols, for the next decade or so he went on to lead a rather mundane life with his new family in Brooklyn: gaining citizenship as an adopted foundling child, attending school, acquiring friends, etc. In his mid-teens he began working summers with his adoptive dad's plumbing company and started to show interest in becoming a performer of some sort or another. Then later, in college, he even joined a Manhattan-based improv group (sometimes performing at the UCB theater) and started doing stand-up gigs and other parties/bit work with his friends. It was during one such group performance, that his past finally caught up with him.

While participating in a variety act for a school assembly in a little town just outside of White Plains, New York, Griffin's friend performed a bit that involved him hypnotizing Griffin into believing that he was a superhero like Captain America fighting evil Nazi scientists. He was 'Captain Ultra' and he needed to save the otherwise doomed damsel from the mad scientists' secret lair. The act even had Griffin change into the most outlandish costume the group could whip up. However Griffin was only standing in for the bit that day, and by pure coincidence the specific words and imagery called out by his amateur stage hypnotist friend triggered actual flashes of the repressed memories of Griffin's parents, his sister, the lab they were kept in, and the night of the fire. Along with the pulling forth of these momentary glimpses, the behavioral conditioning which had suppressed Griffin's abilities for over a decade also ruptured like a poorly maintained dam.

Chaos ensued, as while many of the children present were delighted to see Captain Ultra suddenly flying dozens of feet off the ground with one of the "Nazi scientists" dangling by just one hand, the adults present, including Griffin's friends and fellow performers, were justifiably shocked and terrified. Fortunately nobody was hurt, as almost immediately upon having his powers emerge, Griffin's mind easily repelled the hypnotic trance he was under, though he found the sight of himself hovering in the air just about as shocking and terrifying as anyone else, well, except for the guy who was dangling in his hand... he had dibs on most shocked and terrified. The authorities were called after Griffin landed and put the other young man down, and believing him to be yet another Inhuman, Griffin was swiftly taken and detained by S.H.I.E.L.D.

While in the admittedly not-as-scary-as-he-imagined custody of S.H.I.E.L.D., testing backed up his repeated claims that he didn't know anything about Inhumans nor had he ingested any fish oil pills in the last year and subsequently emerged from a cocoon... whatever the heck that was supposed to mean. While bio-scans did show extensive modifications of Griffin's genetics and physiology, he was definitely not Inhuman. Investigation into the cold case circumstances of the fire that occurred over a decade earlier likewise proved a dead end, though notably at some point the mysteriously burnt woman Griffin had found with had long since come out of her coma and subsequently vanished. As Griffin was not keen on dropping out of college and becoming a government agent, ultimately his detention didn't lead to much.

While it may not have been fruitful for the agency, the time Griffin spent with S.H.I.E.L.D. before finally be allowed to go home (albeit registered and with a tracking bracelet) did at least allow him to better learn the extent of his abilities. He was really strong, but not like Hulk strong. He was mostly bullet proof, but not so much tazer or ICER proof. He could run faster than he could fly, but he wasn't like jet plane fast either way. He could exhale hard enough to flip a car or shout loud enough to just wreck it. He could also totally walk through walls and see through them too. According to a woman named Simmons, Griffin's ability to walk through walls (and perhaps all of his powers) was being produced by some sort of latent mental control he possessed over his own body allowing him to alter it various ways. This had the unconscious effect of making him more appealing to others since gaining his powers. While his overall appearance had not grossly changed since gaining his powers, all aspects of it were nonetheless subconsciously modified by his ability, from the symmetry of his facial features, to the deepness of the hue of his eyes, to the resonance and harmonic tone of his vocal chords, everything was subtly enhanced. This same ability was also what allowed him temporarily dis-corporate his molecules long enough to pass through other solid matter and likewise the method by which he seemed to be able to spontaneously recover from even severe injuries.

After being released, Griffin was happy to be reunited with his family and go back to his normal life as much as was possible. He was also able to salvage most of his friendships, though a few people on campus and also in his improv group expressed that they didn't feel safe and/or comfortable associating with him anymore. Without formally asking him to leave, his college by way of his major advisor also suggested that maybe given his situation completing his senior year via online course offerings was probably in his best interests, and Griffin agreed. On the plus side, the goofy, over-the-top costume he'd worn as part of the now gone viral "Captain Ultra" skit at least meant his face wasn't known to absolutely everyone, so he had the possibility of just laying low if wanted. But Griffin had never been the laying low type.

While not donning a costume or actively going out and looking for criminals, Griffin soon found himself repeatedly helping people in all sorts of situations, in and around New York City. This lead him to cross paths with another enhanced native of New York, Jessica Jones, while the later was staking out a young trophy wife supposedly stepping out on her husband at the clubs. When Griffin intervened in an unrelated fight that erupted in one such, the commotion started caused the investigator to lose track of her subject, and she blamed Griffin for that. However, he subsequently tracked down the car the woman had disappeared into with his scanner vision (which Jones has since insisted on referring to as "perviscope") for Jones.

Since their initial encounter, Griffin has made repeated drop-ins to get advise from what he somewhat one-sidedly considers his enhanced-life mentor. Jones has mostly been annoyed by such visits but occasionally does find the free labor handy, and even described the instance of him fixing the toilet in her office as being the best god damn super power ever. Probably the most worthwhile actual advice she has given Griffin so far was to drop the captain from Captain Ultra (or better yet the name altogether) since Griffin doesn't own any vessels nor has he ever been a captain of any team or military group... and Ultra on its own sounds like a detergent brand.
