-Warrior Woman is a standard Evil German Dominatrix (a REALLY common trope of the mid-'70s- that's where those Ilsa- She-Wolf of the S.S. Torture-Porn movies came from- I am SO not into the whole thing. Watching one of those, I was like "Aw, YEAH- an Uschi Digard nude scene! And then she vomits blood onto her breasts and I'm like "NNNNNNNNNYYYYYYYYYYOPE!!") using a whip to attack the Golden Age Invaders in their World War II-themed stories. She gained powers similar to Master Man following an explosion, and became the "Wonder Woman" Expy of the evil Super-Axis forces (alongside Baron Blood/Batman, Master Man/Superman, Merrano/Aquaman, etc.). She was put into suspended animation and revived in modern times, but not much ever became of her- she gets trotted out more recently than in the past, owing to her status as a semi-powerful, prominent female villain (the positive kind of Positive Discrimination, I think- call me a feminist, but I think there oughta be way more super-powered broads out there!). Though the one on the recent James Robinson Squadron Supreme series was an Alternate Universe version of Power Princess/Zarda- she was from a world where the Squadron Sinister ruled, and went undercover as a "good guy" Zarda, before being revealed and booted out by the ACTUAL good Zarda.

-She's got a weird case of having the Super-Soldier Serum (kinda- she got doused in the stuff when something exploded), but never bothering to make more of it or allow others to utilize its powers. Not that it matters as much in modern times, as many characters can make things that are far more powerful.

-Warrior Woman's stats are HILARIOUSLY-vague and hard to find online- all I have is that she's supposed to be fairly super-strong and good enough to challenge The Invaders back in the day. She normalized into a much-weaker character later, but then the Official Stats changed. So she's +12/+8 and has Power Attack to cover her bases- good enough. Her nasty whip gives her some range in melee, not to mention she loves to use guns.

-Water Witch is from some team of Mole Man subjects- a band of Jobbers known as The Outcasts. She's another Gruenwald creation, which is probably why ANYONE remembered her well enough to throw her into the "Femizon" group in The Superior Stratagem. She never threw a single shot in that whole story as far as I can recall, and she looked a whole lot younger than she does in earlier pictures (where she looks like a stereotypical haggard old witch). I figure someone who was as one-shot as this lady was should be a PL 7 Jobber, basically a Poor Man's Water Wizard. If you can get poorer than HIM, anyways.

-White Dragon (the second; the first was an Iron Man foe who was a Chinese inventor and brief threat) is a Chinese crime-boss who works with The Kingpin and others to mess up people in New York's Chinatown. He was a minor guy who fought Spider-Man a couple times, but never really made a dent (in one story, he's chased off by The Prowler, Prowler's brother Abe, and a hobo with a pistol). He wouldn't appear until YEARS later for Dark Reign, where he feuded with Mr. Negative over Chinatown, and allied with The Hood's Jobber Army. However, Mr. Negative "corrupted" him and sent him after The Hood, who shot White Dragon to death. A third one (though someone probably just forgot the second was dead) has appeared feuding with The Owl, but The Superior Spider-Man brutally beat them senseless.

-White Dragon is your standard PL 8 Martial Artist, but with a mask that breathes Gas & Fire, giving him a bit of an "extra". He's still a minor-league guy (I mean, most super-villains AT LEAST beat Spidey in the FIRST fight!).

WEAPONLORD:
-In video games, like many things, TIMING is everything. No matter how good your game is, or how spectacular the graphics are, you gotta release it at the right time. Hardware generations, industry trends, altering perceptions... these things are often even more important than game quality in determining whether or not a game becomes a success.

Case in point: Working your asses off with incredibly-detailed graphics, a complicated battle system, great character designs and a bloody mess of a backdrop... really doesn't matter much when you're releasing one of the last games of the 16-bit generation.

Seriously, WeaponLord came out literally as the Super NES and Sega Genesis were dying a slow death (October 1995, to be exact), directly the result of the hardware companies going whole-hog into the Next Generation systems. And so this Mortal Kombat-inspired game with swords, bloody fatalities, and character designs that look like H.R. Geiger teamed up with Frank Frazetta, pretty much came and went in a flash. I mean, with Toshinden and Street Fighter Alpha kicking around, this looked like a damn relic.

And it's a real shame- release this damn thing even one or two years earlier, and you'd have had a mega-smash hit. This game would be getting nostalgia greater than Eternal Champions got, and still be spoken of to this day. But instead... Namco released it right at the end of a hardware generation, and it got ignored. A few other 16-bit games still sold in this era, but Fighting Games in particular were growing up fast.

WeaponLord has the most generic plot ever- some evil DemonLord is around, and various people want to kill him and take his power. You play one of six characters, going through the other challengers- if you fail to kill any of them with one of numerous Fatalities, you actually have to face all the survivors in a Gauntlet Match! That's right- the game is actually MUCH HARDER if you don't know the Fatality Codes! And this is before GameFaqs & SmartPhones.

The graphics are very detailed, considering these are 16-bit games. The detail (largely through tattoos, hair, and muscles so corded that you gotta wonder how many used needles you're finding in these ancient realms) means that the graphics end up an bit "stiff" and fuzzy, as the SNES just wasn't gonna hold all that in (the Genesis version is much, much uglier).

The fighting system is considered to be pretty deep. It was one of the early games that introduced "Parries", which allowed you an attack that could stump an enemy's attack, leaving him open for retribution. Similarly, Deflecting Attacks do the same thing, but moreso, and done by a more powerful strike that overpowers theirs. You can also do "Guard Breaks", rendering the enemy's next attack ineffective. A "Stumbling Stun" is when you hit a hard strike to the enemy's back- hard to do, but it leaves him wide open! There are even "Weapon Breaks", which can shatter your opponent's weapon, rendering his range null!

The game was designed by James Goddard & Dave Winstead, both from Capcom (Goddard was actaully the creator of Dee Jay!). They were hired by Namco to work on a fighting game, and shifted it to focus on Goddard's fascination with Conan the Barbarian. The large size of the character sprites meant that they could only use seven characters in the game- a crazy-low number, even for the time. By this point, Street Fighter II had more than DOUBLE that- and as the defining game of the genre, had even started with twelve! However, characters were given an unusually large number of moves. The characters share fatalities, save for Zarak (the Final Boss), who had his own unique one- the game's pretty messy in general, with lots of heads being hacked off. Nothing as disturbing as Eternal Champions and its creepy Stage Fatalities and weird acid burns, though.

The game is considered very deep, but extremely difficult for newcomers- the Parry & Deflect-based fighting system takes time to master. The computer-controlled opponents were also notoriously tough. As sales disappointed, no sequel was released- one was announced and rumored, but Namco shifted gears. Goddard suspects that some of their work and ideas went into Soul Blade, which eventually became Soul Calibur.

The Characters:
Only featuring seven characters, they're a bit same-y in terms of M&M stats, being "Muscular Barbarian With Bladed Weapon & Special Moves That Are Basically Harder Swings". Their specials don't vary too much, though a few have Blasts, so we're not in Virtua Fighter territory here. For Power Levels, I went with PL 8.5- I was thinking of a bridge between PL 8 & 9, but I was uncomfortable giving them equal PLs to the good Street Fighter characters like Zangief & Cammy, given that the base damage of a WeaponLord is much higher (they're almost all carrying heavy weapons). But ultimately, if a Killer Instinct guy can be a full PL 9, then a WeaponLord guy can be half a PL below that, especially as their roster is much smaller and probably more elite as a result. Give WL a sequel, and you'd have full PL 9s.

-One of the tricky things is that weapons add a lot to base damage in M&M (and real life), but in Video Game terms, they don't really take much more off the Health Bar. A "Fierce Punch" equivalent with a Sword is only gonna do like 15% damage instead of just off the guy- the same amount of damage as in Street Fighter II. Just one of those things you gotta gloss over when doing Video Game builds, really.

Korr: Conan Knock-Off. Muscular barbarian. Big Sword.
Zorn: Muscular thief. Throwing axe & Shield.
Talazia: Muscular acrobatic chick. Throwing double-bladed boomerang-thing.
Jen-Tai: The reason I'm doing these builds. Sword & Shield.
Bane: Muscular & enormous guy with a sabre-toothed tiger headdress. Giant Warhammer.
Divada: Muscular Evil Mistress of Magic. Double-Bladed Staff.
Zarak: Muscular Evil Warlord. Huge, long-ass blade on a stick.

nice. I had almost forgotten about this game. never played it, but it did grab my attention in Gamepro years ago

Defenses:
Dodge +12 (DC 22), Parry +14 (DC 24), Toughness +3, Fortitude +5, Will +6

Complications:
Motivation (Power)- Divada sacrificed her own father's life for more power- she will stop at nothing to rule the world.
Weakness (Predictability)- Divada cannot simply "spam" out the same attack over and over again, as the opponent will expect the attacks, and be ready for them (and a counterattack). The third time she tries the same technique (or same combo of techniques) in a short span, she will be at -2 to Accuracy, AND to her Active Defenses in that round. All will decrease by 2 every successive round the same move is done.

Total: Abilities: 72 / Skills: 38--19 / Advantages: 8 + 11 / Powers: 18 / Defenses: 13 (141)

-A medium-sized female fighter at a mere six feet tall, and 210 ripped, corded pounds, Divada is our token "Bad Girl"- a demonic sorceress who sacrificed her own father for magical might, and seeks to rule everything. A nasty sort, she has by far the most Powers of the characters, and costs more than a standard PL 9. That said, she's still a lighter-weight fighter, so has to play it smart to win. Her powers consist of a short-range Teleport, Leaping (allowing her to get behind opponents more easily), Blasting people, Blasting the ground (a Ranged Trip, more or less), Slash away (Multiattack or Regular), and a Dive Attack.

oh yes. come to Butthead

-Weasel is an old Supporting Character of Deadpool's, predating the Merc With A Mouth's own series, in fact. His backstory is that he was a classmate of Peter Parker & Gwen Stacy's at Empire State University, and turned to crime when a time-traveling Deadpool (in a hilarious circumstance, he disguises himself as Peter and begins living out a day in his life- making fun of the Osborn Family hair, Harry's '60s slang- "are you having a seizure? Speak English!"- and acting like a wimp) ruins his job prospects with Norman Osborn.

-Weasel acts as a Tinkerer-type criminal, providing gadgets, weapons and intelligence to various mercenaries & criminals. He ended up pairing off with Deadpool, and the two became partners in crime, with Weasel even standing up to Wade's enemies- unfortunately, Deadpool punished him severely for the slight of visiting Deadpool's home, and the resulting torture (being trapped in a box full of weapons) was too much for him. He abandoned Wade, but soon came upon an amnesiac Deadpool, restoring their friendship while he nursed the Merc back to health. Their on-again/off-again, passive-aggressive relationship becomes a constant in the Deadpool run, with Wade's insanity tearing them apart, but the occasional sweet moment (DP TiVo's all of Battlestar Galactica while Weasel is imprisoned) bringing them back together again.

-Weasel acts as a mole in HYDRA as "The Penetraitor", and reappears later as "The House"- a Las Vegas guy who fights for the Casinos- Deadpool secretly acts as his sidekick, Wildcard. The two have another falling-out when DP steals money and Weasel takes the blame, seemingly turning him murderous. However, Deadpool survives and tortures Weasel some more- Weasel returns as part of a revenge squad against Deadpool, but thinks better of it just in time for Wade to kill him. In the meantime, Weasel accidentally killed Sluggo, an associate of Wade's.

-Weasel returns as "Patient Zero" after being condemnded to Hell and escaping with the help of Mephisto. He fights Spider-Man and Deadpool combined, creating Itsy-Bitsy, a woman containing the powers of both, to fight them. However, she kills him in front of the two. Deadpool confronts Weasel back in Hell, and Jack explains that he did it because of all the past abuse, stating that Deadpool has "tricked the world into believing that deep down he is anything more than a scum-sucking murderous psychopath", disbelieving all of Wade's characterization over the years.

-Weasel has no powers, and is a bit of a wimp at PL 2 (and then only to his Dodge!), but he's at least a genius.

Worldengine

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE WORLDENGINE
Created By:
Warren Ellis & Mike Deodato, Jr.
First Appearance: Thor #491 (1995)
Role: Plot Device

-The Worldengine was the creation of a mad scientist known only as "Price". Driven mad after he took some mushrooms and had a vision of Yggdrasil, the World-Tree, birthing a new human race after Ragnarok, Price built a machine in order to convince it that Ragnarok, the end of the world, had already occured. This was so that he could be around to witness mankind's rebirth. The Egyptian Death God Seth grew intrigued by this, and mystically bonded the Worldenging to Yggdrasil. Thor was dramatically weakened by the "speeding up" of the clock towards armageddon, but he and the Enchantress (his paramour at the time) were able to stop it, and Price was slain by Seth. Odin, who had known of Seth's machinations all along, used the still-active Worldengine and hiding all of the Norse Gods into new bodies with new identities, Odin tried to "trick" Yggdrasil into thinking that Ragnarok had already occurred, thus ensuring that it never actually would.

-Unfortunately, Thor and others died in battle against Onslaught. Seth, whom Odin had let live- assuming that Thor would be around to oppose him- used the Worldengine to destroy Yggdrasil, sending him into battle with the now-awakened Norse Gods. Seth had things won, but unwisely allowed Odin to reclaim his memories in order to "Monologue" to him about his brilliant plan, which was the impetus the Norsemen needed to regain their fighting spirit and fight back. The Worldengine was thus finally destroyed.

-Weird story, but that's Warren Ellis for you. His Thor run is more well-known for Mike Deodato's pervy art (usually of The Enchantress, who was Fanserviced up more than almost any 1990s character at the time), but was probably full of stuff like this.

-Warbird (taking the name from Carol Danvers' most-recently-dropped persona) was brought in as a Deathbird-like Shi'ar Warrioress charged with making sure Gladiator's son Kubark did not die at The Jean Grey School. She more or less just sits around, makes "I will kill _____!" comments, and shows a ton of cleavage in the Wolverine and the X-Men book, but actually takes up a more major role in Astonishing X-Men, which usually comes across as the "Random Grab-Bag" mutant team book. She essentially vanished after that book got the ax- I have no idea what she's up to now.

-Warbird stats up more or less like Deathbird, and is basically set up to ATTACK ATTACK ATTACK with melee weapons and the occasional Blaster. Not an ideal PL 10, but I don't buy her as being Deathbird's equal.

WEAPONLORD:
nice. I had almost forgotten about this game. never played it, but it did grab my attention in Gamepro years ago
Yeah, I'm actually pretty sure I've never played it either, owing to its awful, awful timing and release date. I remember GamePlayers' big, two-page review which was basically "Hey, apparently 2-D fighting on the SNES ISN'T dead, after all!" but they only gave the thing 76% or whatever, so they weren't in LOVE with it. Though a high-70s score back in the mid-1990s was actually a very solid one for a game- anything above 80% was going to be fantastic. It was the era before mags were expected to give glowing reviews of everything or have their review copy privileges revoked.

-A guy I've never heard of, Washout was linked to the Weapon-X movement, appearing in only one panel of the X-Force book. He was a chronic bed-wetter as a child, but developed the Mutant power to generate water from his body. He was rejected by the X-Force team that later became "X-Statix". He later joined Malcolm Concord's Weapon-X, enhancing his mutant powers into a much more combat-ready self. However, the use of his powers threatened to kill him, and he was slowly cracking apart. Ultimately, he dies fighting the Director when he joins Cable's "Underground" movement, as the use of his powers finally finishes him off.

-The original Warrant is a one-off from Marvel Comics Presents (an anthology book that's almost never talked about these days... because it was the early '90s and the stories were AWFUL Iron Age drek), sent by A.I.M. to kill Iron Fist and get a Macguffin back from him. Riding his motorcycle, he paralyzes Iron Fist with his "Evil Eye", but is then distracted by Danny's female companion- a car tire cuts off the "Evil Eye", and Iron Fist then one-shot-KO's the guy before he can fire his Giant Gun... Seriously, that's it.

-This goofy-ass, super-'90s loser is a government agent sent to take care of The Lizard. In so doing, he kidnaps Curt Connors's son and brings him to the Florida Everglades, and engages the reptilian villain in a battle that soon involves Spider-Man. He "kills" Connors by dumping him into quicksand, but becomes a mercenary after the government cuts him loose over this fiasco. He founds his own company, but only shows up in an issue of Nightwatch and one more of Web of Spider-Man before he disappeares, never to be seen again.

-Warrant ("SWEET CHERRY PIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!") is a pretty generic Mercenary Build, though most of those guys don't use flying costumes. He's also humorously-similar to another guy who showed up in an issue of Marvel Comics Presents who ALSO had guns and one half of his face covered in gear. Un-great minds think alike...

It's a shame because I'd love to see what comes out of that gun. A loaf of bread? A bunny?
