Random Power Table

Post by Jabroniville »

Here's something I've been using from time to time- a Random Power Table. Basically, if I want some inspiration for characters, sometimes I just roll randomly on this thing, getting some combinations of powers. Sometimes they're junk, but other times a concept comes together. For example, I wanted a PL 12 to be the most dominant character in India, so I rolled 4-5 times on the table (indicating tons of power). What I got was Distintegration, Move Object, Variable, Flight and something else. Now, thinking about it, I went "now what would combine all of that?", and ended up going with someone who had Telekinesis more on the level of "Molecular Control" as much as anything- hence, she could use her powers to separate molecular bonds, move stuff around, etc. A really high-end character.

Basically, I roll once for a "minor" or one-note character, 2 times for slightly above that, 3 for great heroes, and 4-5 for Super-Heavyweights. Nothing is set in stone, but I find it surprising how well a concept comes together if you roll a few times.

The old Golden Heroes RPG (and its sequel Squadron UK) is really good for stuff like that, as are most of the old-school superhero role-playing games that have random generation.

There is of course also the Powerlisting wiki and its random page function.

My standard answer for "what color scheme should I go with?" always ends up being "have the character be one of those heroes who changes their color scheme every week". And really... people would probably totally do that in real life.

Complications:
Motivation (The Fight)- An athletic girl since childhood, Roxy grew to love the struggle and glory of martial arts- her desires have led her to international status as a high-end pro fighter, and into the world of super-heroics. She seeks to perfect her skills, and become the best in the world.
Motivation (Justice)- Initially getting into it for experience and power, as Osprey, Rochelle began to see the need for defenseless people to be protected.
Responsibility (Temper)- Roxy is pretty fighty.
Responsibility (Silk Hiding Steel)- Roxy hides a softer side behind a tough-as-nails exterior, and tends to be introspective, moody and more than a little dependent in relationships.
Prejudice (Lesbian)- Roxy hid her sexuality for years, both for personal and professional reasons. She wasn't open with people for a long time... but you'd have to be blind not to know.
Relationship (Parents)- Rochelle's parents are deeply religious people who don't see eye-to-eye with their daughter's true nature. Still, there is a strong familial bond.
Responsibility (Gay Icon)- Rochelle grows uncomfortable with her status as a high-profile gay celebrity.
Responsibility (Gay SUPER-Icon)- Osprey eventually got pretty well-known as a lesbian super-heroine, and is easily the most prominent of what is a surprisingly-large number. Again, not comfortable.
Motivation (Chi Powers)- Many of the top-level competitive fighters in the world possess powerful Chi abilities. Roxy, for all her training, effort and desire, has never managed even a little of this. This frustrates her greatly, and causes her considerable strain with her coaching staff, opponents and others- it's even cost her fights. Roxy is unwilling to accept that she might be "just one of those people" who can never develop such abilities.
Relationship (Mega-Woman)- Roxy has a pretty strong rivalry with hometown hero Mega-Woman, who represents a lot of the things she isn't- personable, classically-beautiful and a powerful superhero. This jealousy is tempered by a lot of frustration- Roxy is intensely-attracted to the heroine, but knows it'll never happen.
Relationship (Rival Fighter)- One of Roxy's more prominent intimate relationships has been with a rival Muay Thai fighter (also in the World Underground Circuit)- a bisexual single mother (a widow) out to pay the bills by taking up her old career. I'll think of a name later.

Total: Abilities: 84 / Skills: 58--29 / Advantages: 27 / Powers: 22 / Defenses: 15 (177)

-Rochelle San Dimas grew up an athletic, energetic tomboy to a religious family- preferring the name "Roxy", she became very athletic in High School, turning into a superstar athlete. However, she had an aggressive, nasty temper, and frequently started fights over the homophobic taunts of many kids (made worse because they were correct- she was a lesbian)- this eventually led her to Extreme Athletics and the martial arts. Roxy grew to quickly love the thrill of competition- she specialized in Muay Thai Kickboxing, and won the top titles in the region before hitting her twenties. Eventually, she became a big name on the national circuit, and even competed on the international Underground Fighting leagues- however, this alone wasn't enough for her. The concept of strength, the deep-seated strategic thinking the thrill of going up against a powerful rival- these things empowered her like nothing else- she gained a powerful desire to be the very BEST- no matter what. Roxy grew OBSESSED with fighting. Just pro fighting wasn't enough.

-Roxy began seeking out trouble as a vigilante, challenging thugs, dangerous criminals, and even low-end Super-Villains- all in the masked form of The Osprey. With some of these guys, she found even HEAVIER competition- true life-or-death struggles. Soon, Roxy began making a name for herself on two fronts- under her real name as a martial artist with an impressive Win-Loss record, and as Osprey, an up-and-coming superhero. Despite her competitive, self-involved reason for become a superhero, she soon came to realize the importance of her work after having to deal with the victims of various violent crimes. Soon, Roxy became both a pro fighter AND an authentic hero.

-As Osprey, Roxy fights the more common criminals and "Street Level" sorts of Mega-City, having a somewhat contentious relationship with Mega-Woman, who fights in the higher weight classes of power. Roxy's snarky attitude and argumentative nature brush up against Mega-Woman's calmer, kinder approach to super-heroics, resulting in a personality clash as well. Despite this, the two have teamed up on numerous occasions (Mega-Woman is a lot of things, but stealthy & subtle she isn't), and developed a grudging respect (and a little something extra, in Osprey's case) for each other. Osprey's attitude about the "overly-big" Legion of Light even led to periods where she was placed on the team- despite being outclassed in power, she carried herself well, and was considered a good "moral code" member by the others.

-Roxy's homosexuality was initially a "worst-kept secret", both in her civilian and superheroic identities, but the truth is largely out there in both cases. Super-heroines have a pretty similar ratio of homosexuals as police officers do (that is, a bit more than the average population), though not QUITE as much as some stereotypers would suggest, but she's easily the most well-known and prominent. This, and her civilian celebrity, cause her a bit of discomfort, as she's more of a private, introverted type of person, and never wanted to become a prominent symbol for anything.

Jab's Notes: So when I first created the JLA-like "Legion of Justice", I attempted to copy some DC characters pretty directly, or at least inspirations- the fast guy became Mr. Maximum (now Maximum), Superman led to Meta-Man and Meta-Woman (now just MEGA-Woman), etc. And one of them was a Hawkgirl/Swift-like character (this was when "The Authority" was a big thing) named Osprey, who had the short-haired winged-chick thing going. And when I drew her out, with the kinda-spikey parted hair and the grimace and whatever, I looked at her and went "she looks like a butch lesbian. ... meh, why not?" And that's pretty much the story of how I just added in some "inclusion" without really thinking about it :).

-And yeah, I went with the "butch" aspect over the Lipstick Lesbian thing because... well, almost every kind of lesbian you see in fiction is the "stereotypically pretty" kind. Plus I found the stereotypes interesting- I've read a lot about LGBT stuff, and how the "butches" are stereotyped within that community as "steel hiding silk", while the lipsticky types are "silk hiding steel"- the idea that the tougher-looking girls (who openly mimic or emulate traditionally male mannerisms) could be as sensitive as anyone was a great, interesting dichotomy. I feel like that's a stereotype not a lot of people know about, so it's interesting to play with it. All stereotypes come from SOMEWHERE, so I don't feel bad about including it- I've known a TON of butch & androgynous lesbians in my life, so I know this stuff holds at least a little bit true.

-Osprey, for YEARS, was one of the characters I most thought about for this team, sticking around in various incarnations, even though she was out-powered by most of them (even Night Dragon is basically Snake Eyes Lite). Mainly because I found her personality- uptight, easily-annoyed and self-righteous- a lot of fun in comparison to the other characters. I even had the idea that Gryphon would nurse a crush for her, being the only person in the entire world who didn't figure out that she was a lesbian. The "transparent closet" thing is something I found amusing.

-I eventually married the concept of Osprey (the closest thing to a "Batman" for the team) to my ideas for a Martial Arts World that resembles "Street Fighter" and SNK games- I'd already created a cast of characters for THAT as if it were an actual video game, but they translate just as well to the world of super-heroes. So boom- I had my concept- Super-Hero Martial Artist, who fights criminals by night, and various Capcom-style bad-asses by day. This lets me do one of my big things that I'm attempting to do- SHOW, Don't Tell. Rather than just EXPLAIN how martial arts & fighting competitions work in a Sandbox Setting of super-heroics and magic, I think it'd be more effective if I had a prominent character who LIVED that life, and thus could reflect it more properly.

I dig it. Great way of doing a "Batman" style character without actually being a Batman copycat. The relationship with Mega-Woman and the way her lesbianism is a part of her character without being so forced or unnatural like many more mainstream examples are all great. Really digging it.

Thanks! There's always this... balance, with characters like that. You don't want it to define their entire being (gay people I know HATE IT when media about them is all "Gay this, gay that" with no other aspects), but at the same point, being something so dramatically "other" in society will always shape the person who are. So it shouldn't matter... but it matters, y'know?

Plus I gave her enough other aspects that you could make an entire comic about JUST the Street Fighter aspects of it all. Finally realizing that this hero I'd created more than fifteen years ago could be slotted perfectly as the super-heroic representative to my Fighting Game-verse ideas was one of those big "Eureka!" moments- suddenly, that aspect of my 'verse didn't have to be a separate thing with an entirely-different cast! One of my HEROES could be there!

So I used the FDH program to find more potential color schemes for Osprey, and naturally still can't pick. I think she'll just be one of those heroes who puts on a new outfit every once in a while, like The Wasp.

The logo is pretty much just me shoving the "Bird" thing in there with some triangles to look more like wings, because I didn't feel like fussing with it, and it's complicated to GET GOOD- this is mostly to lay out colors. Any color schemes popping out at you all?

Osprey is pretty awesome. A prime example of "power doesn't make the hero", story potential and design are much more important.

I tend to favor gold-and-anything-else, especially black, white or red, but I don't think it fits her personality. IF she was gonna have a single permanent color scheme, I'd probably go with black-and-red...though that might make too on the nose the similarity to a certain gay bat lady. Actual ospreys, from what I'm seeing on google, are mostly black, white and brown. That is probably not a very exciting combo for a superhero outfit at first glance, but I'm sure it could be made to work.

Haha, yeah, I looked at real Ospreys, but the whole character kind of needed to be "sleek urban vigilante" so I didn't want the pretty speckled colors coming in to play. These guys gotta stick to their flat color schemes :).

Crap- didn't even think of Kate Kane. Maybe red primary/black secondary color?

I'd go for a slightly lighter grey primary with a dark-brown/black secondary, which'd match an actual osprey while still retaining the costumed vigilante feel I think.

The Arthro-Squad

Post by Jabroniville »

Image

THE ARTHRO-SQUAD:

-Mannfred Kerlinger was a genius with an itch for cash- one of the greatest weapon designers of his time, he realized that plenty of people would be willing to shell out the big bucks for advanced weaponry. He designed plenty of it, and sold them to pretty much everyone who was buying (most weapons manufacturers had the decency to only sell to America and its allies, no matter how horrible those allies might be), and made a solid amount of money. However, as Super-Heroes got more and more common, the Prof got a great idea- with the increased likelihood of criminals and dictators coming up against superhuman opposition, the best way to make money was in Anti-Super gear. And the easiest way to do THAT was to create Power Armor (as tanks & jets were highly vulnerable to anyone who could close with them in combat). And so the Professor set about to creating various suits of Armor with various purposes- Powerhouse suits against strong heroes, lighter suits for Mooks, etc. Contrary to most powersuits of the day (which utilized solar-powered "corded" limbs of "Suntrion Coils"- named for their creator- which allowed for easy energy build-up and enhanced strength), he utilized segmented power armor drawing energy from an internal radioactive engine. These were riskier, but much less expensive.

-The only thing lacking was Proof of Concept- Professor Mantis (as he now called himself) needed to prove his suits were capable. And so he went about hiring mercenaries and formed a group wearing armor based around his designs- choosing Insects as a theme (EVERY Villain Team needing a theme, and armor being segmented, it seemed a natural fit), he began attacking various superheroes, defeating them publically in order to prove how good his suits were. He made a killing (despite the occasional setback, like being arrested once in a while), and even though the Arthro-Squad was frequently defeated, they always did JUST WELL ENOUGH that many would buy variants of the suits just to "hang with the heroes".

-The Professor is notorious for being a skinflint and for holding desperate clients over a barrel- many super-villains only have minor powers or genius, and need the superior "Mantis-Brand" exoskeletons to really engage in proper super-villainy. So he charges high prices, and higher ones still on the desperate.

Jab's Notes: These guys are so, SO cynically-created, but have part of that "world-building" thing in them. Like Mark Gruenwald, I'm always wondering "how would _____ work in comic books?" And of course... why WOULD so many villains have access to Powersuits? Why do so many guys seem to create one thing, and then nothing else ever again? Who fixes stuff when it breaks? And while Marvel has guys like Techo and The Tinkerer, the Jabverse has guys like Professor Mantis- if a bad guy needs a suit, or a way to utilize his powers properly, he just hits up the Prof for his gear.

Capers:
* Professor Mantis begins selling mid-tier suits cheaply to well-meaning individuals, producing a horde of Vigilantes. These new kids become a nuisance to more experienced heroes, as they are high-powered but completely untrained- many heroes report kids attempting to become their "Sidekicks" or interjecting themselves into dangerous situations. It turns out that Mantis has set up some clues to lead a large group of heroes to his new base, featuring an all-new Super-Arthrobot- this titanic beast is designed to kill established heroes, producing the best "Proof Of Concept" ever.
* A foreign, unpopular government has amassed a small army of original and knock-off "Arthro-Squad" Powersuits, right when the American government was planning on making a major purchase of Mantis' technology. To stave off embarassment, the government sends Gryphon to "neutralize" the threat, but forces him to team up with Mantis and his Squad, who are there as part of their plea bargain.

Thanks! I couldn't quite figure out what she "brought" to the main hero team power-wise... but the personality always comes first. Many of my background hero teams (I've been working on a few, largely inspired by BSDigitalQ's work with various squads) have randomized powers and concepts, but the personality stuff would NEVER be drawn at random.

Honestly what someone brings to a team power-wise should be like a tertiary concern next to what they bring to the team in terms of character interaction and similar dynamics.

The logo is pretty much just me shoving the "Bird" thing in there with some triangles to look more like wings, because I didn't feel like fussing with it, and it's complicated to GET GOOD- this is mostly to lay out colors. Any color schemes popping out at you all?

I like the Black and Silver.
