So do you have any idea of a timetable/deadline for the recruiting?

I am digging myself out of an RL-imposed gaming exile, and this looks like it might be a good game to get into- but it may take me a bit to get myself back up to speed. I'll take a look at the mentor list and see what kind of ideas I can come up with, but it might help to know how much time I've got to get back in the swing of building a character.

Hand of Glory, possibly the ideal mentor for Blitz that was already in my DA gallery.
Ideal he says. Backstory aside, sounds like the concept of the powerset is basically the same as what I was aiming for lol. Ideal indeed. Coincidental is Hand of Glory has a right arm replacement, while Blitz is the left arm.

Needless to say, but yeah, I think Hand of Glory will be Blitz's mentor.

The original Castellan (below) was a University student who wandered into Faerie and Castle Carbonek (the Grail Castle) accidentally and save Pellam, the Fisher King from another assassination attempt by his brother, the villainous Sir Garlon. In return for his actions he was rewarded with the Strength of Ywaine's Lion, the invulnerability of Excalibur's scabbard, the speed of Gringolet (Gawaine's faerie charger), the senses of Caval, Arthur's hound, the healing ability of Priamus' balm and the power of Arthur's sword Sequence which was said to "glow with the light of the sun. A true legacy to Castellan might have similar powers bestowed or King Pellam could mix it up a bit since there are more potential power sources and abilities in the myths.

I was already considering using Arthurian magical items and doing research. So this is great!

Honestly I hope to be done with the recruiting part as quickly as I can. Unlike a lot of potential GM's the recruiting portion is not my favorite part of the game. Seeing player creativity is awesome but I'm not big on cutting characters to keep the roster in check. I do it, any GM has to, but it's not my favorite thing.

That said, I probably won't recruit for longer than 5 days. So Wednesday or Thursday will see the end of open recruiting (then a few more days for people who pitched a concept to finalize the builds).

I was thinking a psionic telepath but given one presentation I thought I'd look at building up a Dr. Fate / dab of Shazam pastiche. The idea is the teenager is chosen by one of the Lords of Magic to replace his previous host. When he puts on the Helm and Amulet he is transformed from a teenager into an adult body.

Is there any verboten type of build or built techniques. I ask because the appeal of playing a magi is also what makes them potential pain on the butts, the tool box versatility. The DC build of Dr. Fate doubles as a paragon and Dr. Strange is basically an exotic energy projector. I figure Kid Arcane more the latter than the former. More what we saw in Young Justice. Any red button trip falls to avoid before I submit the build would be appreciated.

If you can handle the basics with an array as opposed to a variable that might be nice. If you can't that's cool. If you can settle on a cultural theme for the sorcerer, that would be good too. Earth's Most Elite Practitioner of the arts currently is Mother Knight who is a priestess of Avalon, but there are powerful practitioners from other traditions running around as well. A focus on a theme will help me create enemies specifically keyed to your hero...because every good hero needs "their" foes. Just make sure that no matter how you handle it, your concept allows you to have one of the mentors as a mentor, since that sort of legacy is a key element of the game.

Here's what I have so far, open to suggestions for a codename. The main reason I'm waffling over whether he's full Atlantean or half-human, half-Atlantean is that Oceana looks like she couldn't pass as a normal human in a high school so if the mentees are supposed to have secret identities this wouldn't work for him. Then again, half-human, half-Atlantean would open up some interesting story opportunities for him, with maybe some people from Atlantis not feeling he's worthy of his position due to his heritage.

D’An W’ren (Dan Warren for friends), Blade of Poseidon

Abilities:
Str 4 | Sta 5 (+7) | Agl 3 | Dex 4 | Fgt 5 | Int 1 | Awe 2 | Pre 3
Advantages: Agile Feint, Diehard, Evasion, Grabbing Finesse, Great Endurance, Improved Defense, Power Attack, Takedown, Ultimate Effort (Toughness checks)

Skills: Acrobatics 6 (+9), Athletics 6 (+10), Insight 10 (+12), Perception 6 (+8), Persuasion 6 (+9)

Powers: Aquatic: Enhanced Stamina 2
Immunity 3 (cold, drowning, pressure)
Movement 1 (Environmental Adaptation – Aquatic)
Senses 1 (Low-Light Vision)
Swimming 6 (30 MPH) [16]
Blade of Poseidon: Strength-based Damage 3, Accurate, Penetrating 9
Weaken Toughness 7, Linked to Damage
Easily Removable (-10 points) [10]

Defenses: Dodge 4+3=7 | Parry 2+5=7 | Fortitude 2+5/7=7/9 | Toughness 0+5/7=5/7 | Will 6+2=8

Combat: Initiative +3
Blade of Poseidon +7 | Close, Damage 7, Weaken 7

Abilities 54 + Powers 26 + Advantages 9 + Skills 17 + Defenses 14 = 120

Complications:
“We expect remarkable things from you.” – D’An has had these words repeated to him many times through-out his life. Though they’re a heavy load to bear on his shoulder, they have lead him to push himself ever further, not just to succeed, but to surpass all others. No matter the risks, at times.
Secret (Identity)
Honor – D’An has been raised from birth to be a warrior and that includes following a warrior’s code of honor.
Fish out of water - D'An is unaccustomed not only to life outside the sages' temple, but life on the surface as well. He has a lot to learn about the broader world and is bound to make a few mistakes.
Prejudice (Half-human, half-Atlantean) - Although he can easily enough pass as human, some people might take issue with D'An's heritage. Certainly not all Atlanteans are quite as eager to recognize him as fulfilling the prophecy of the Blade and may even try to claim the weapon for themselves.

“We expect remarkable things from you.”

As far back as he can remember, these are the first words D’An remembers hearing. Over the years they were repeated to him time and again, growing to guide him through his young life. The warrior sages of Atlantis took him in to train him after telling his Atlantean mother and human father that his birth was prophesied as the union of Sea and Land. His would be the hand that wielded the Blade of Poseidon.

All D’An understood was that he had to train constantly, to push himself daily to become faster, stronger, better in every way. His childhood was a lonely one as he had no friends his own age in the temple where the sages trained him.

The second moment that he remembers defining his life is when the sages presented the Blade to him. At first it had only been described to him when the sages taught him of the prophesy, locked away in a secure vault deep in the temple. But finally, his tutors agreed it was time. The Blade practically leaped from its pedestal into his hand, the grip feeling familiar and every swing fluid and deadly accurate.

The third and possibly most momentous change in his life came when Oceana arrived at the temple. D’An could read the displeasure at the interruption in the eyes of the sages but they bent the knee to the warrior princess none the less. O’shana informed them that she was taking D’An with her to the surface world, to learn a different kind of lesson. “A warrior is more than just a weapon wielded by another’s orders. He needs to learn more than you can teach him here. He needs to see greater world outside the walls of this temple.”

Someone meeting D'An for the first time might mistake him for the stereotypical surfer, with a build reflecting years of physical activity, blond hair and happy-go lucky and laid-back attitude. His smile reaches his emerald green eyes easily and he's happy to make friends like a man who has been dying of thirst for so very long. He is very conscious of the duty resting on his shoulders, but still he can’t help his giddy excitement at exploring the wonders of the surface world and dives eagerly into new experiences. However, when a fight presents itself his training takes over and his moves reflect countless hours of practice.

D'An is highly respectful of his elders due to his upbringing and he practically worships Oceana for being the one that took him out of the temple to see the larger world. He doesn't hate the temple, it's simply the only world he's ever known, for good or for ill.

Variable? Not a chance in Dormammu's Domain would I consider a Variable Power except at the lowest levels (cantrips and such). No, we don't consider putting variables in an array :(. Definitely was looking at Mother Knight as the mentor. She was responsible for finding a appropriate vessel, but held off out of fear of each candidate being possessed. The kid was a street thief who (with the Lord of Magic's help) broke into her Sanctum Sanctorem and put on the Helm. He is all gung-ho about being the Lord of Magic's vessel. She fears the LoM subsuming the kid's personality completely so he will no longer be kept from the Great Battle.

Just rough draft ideas. Do you have any world reference material that would help in background building? I'm big into Egyptian stuff recently but always looking for the best ways to slide into "canon" and continuity.

@StarGuard- The most active Egyptian deities currently would be Horus, Bast and Sekr. The others are around, just not so big on mortal affairs. Sekr (a god of the underworld who destroys undead) had a mortal agent (Dr. Akhnaten) until recently (the guy just got too old). Other possibilities are Amon or Ptah, since both are creator/progenitor deities who sort of "fell out of favor" (Amon got combined with Ra to make Amon-Ra and Ptah just kind of fell out of favor).

Dr. Akhnaten Image

Skipping deities altogether you could have the vestments hold the spirit of a celestial being that's not a worshipped deity (a Shedu, the Sphinx, etc.) Thoth is the lord of knowledge and together with Isis pretty much covers the "lord of magic" niche for the Egyptians, but both of them are kind of apathetic about interacting with mankind.

@Mcguffin- A hybrid works fine or if you can spare a point for a feature, he can have a "human disguise". Either way works for me.

I would propose N'Sekt, a legacy for Bestiary. Tobin Grimes was a young man who found a chunk of amber holding what looked like an insect style creature trapped inside with pieces of chitin dusted around it. This would actually be a mystical item(unlike Bestiary's true background) that bonds with Tobin...giving him quasi shapeshifter abilities(Think Vixen style capabilities except with actual physical changes).

PS: Not sure how to pull the image...so I posted the link?)

More background added to my initial build, decided to make him a hybrid after all with Oceana as his mentor.

Are we looking to have secret identities as high school students?

That was my understanding from the initial set-up but it wouldn't be my first time misunderstanding.

We are indeed. Confirmed by Horsenhero as he was reminding me as part of a PM convo.

Her numbers look good. If you have a couple points for one or two background skills that could work, but if those points are better served elsewhere that works too. Unlike Titans and like Young Justice season 1 and X-Men: Evolution, High School is going to somehow figure into this as the cast all start as either Freshmen or Sophmores depending on the age bracket chosen. (14, definitely Freshmen. 16 definitely Sophmore. 15 could be either.) So don't forget to consider how she'll function in the school environment also.
