Yes, little things like that. Haha.

Wasn't there a Thor like that temporarily?BriarThrone wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2017 9:13 pm
Honestly, my ideal version of Thor - like, my own personal Marvel Universe Thor - would be red-bearded, and a lot like Hercules, only more growly and less jovial. Unless he's sitting down with keg of beer and a ton of meat, obviously.

And the current "War Thor" that Volstagg has turned into is kinda like that. A bit edgier and "MY CHILDREN ARE DEEEEEEAAAD!", but similar.

Hercules is no longer a demigod in Marvel comics, after his mortal death Zeus apotheosized him to full god status granting him true immortality and enhancing his power levels, he became the god of strength and later the god of heroes/heroic endeavour
While Thor is technically more powerful taking into account all his varied abilities, Hercules beats Thor in pure strength and fighting ability (which Thor once openly admitted)

Red Norvell was introduced in the Seventies as a way for Odin to stave off Thor death by the Midgard Serpent I think.

Ugh. "Thor" should be the name of a specific god, who is consistently one guy. Mjölnir carrying the godhood, the powers, and the identity to bequeath on somebody with enough strength and virtue? I'm just... shuddering in revulsion over here. Marvel screwed it up good. I'm not against re-imagining the myths, but damn, did they lessen the whole thing in the process.bsdigitalq wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2017 10:43 pm And the current "War Thor" that Volstagg has turned into is kinda like that. Oh for F***S SAKE, don't tell me they actually went and killed Volstagg's kids. We can't even have that? One of Thor's buddies is actually happily married and a decent father with a bunch of kids?bsdigitalq wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2017 10:43 pm And the current "War Thor" that Volstagg has turned into is kinda like that. With the past I dunno 10 or so years Marvel has done it's damnest to drive people from comics with horrible event after event. The weird civil war 2 thing was the last straw for me so I quit buying Marvel and I've switched to DC but I never could get into Jane as Thor, I guess because it goes out of it's way to turn a noble demigod into an arrogant ass in order to make her look better. (The whole Thor cheating on Jane stuff.) I dunno it just seems like Marvel has a certain level of contempt towards Fans now a days.

Right, that mini-series where Thor had to do a lot of feats without his hammer, and he got into a fight with Hercules. Thor admitted that Herc was better in terms of pure hand-to-hand combat, which I agree with. In my mind, Herc should be one of the more skilled strongmen in Marvel, basically what would happen if you took Ben Grimm and gave him legit Class 100 strength/durability. Honestly, Ben should hate fighting Herc more than the Hulk.M4C8 wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2017 11:01 pmHercules is no longer a demigod in Marvel comics, after his mortal death Zeus apotheosized him to full god status granting him true immortality and enhancing his power levels, he became the god of strength and later the god of heroes/heroic endeavour

Incidentally, that story had Thor win via using storm powers, which are inherit to him. The story implied (and again, something I agreed with) that Thor's weather control and lightning powers are his, but the hammer basically works as a focusing tool to give him more fineness and a little power boost. To me, that should be the real power of the hammer, the ability to focus the abilities of those who can wield it. To everyone who is worthy but not Thor, the hammer should act as an amazing weapon, return to them, etc., and it would enhance their control over whatever 'power' they might have, but the weather/lightning stuff should be Thor's alone.
Part of me wonders if guys like Hercules, the Hulk and Superman shouldn't be "Class 100" types, while Thor would be a notch below them, in the Class 90 bracket I put strong but not quite there guys like Namor and Wonder Woman. Then you can play up the strike bonus Thor gets from his hammer and his skill edge, where his hammer lets him hit harder than guys like Herc or Supes, but by contrast, he can't take hits as well as they do, so he has to fight more like his movie counterpart with a lot of ducking, dodging, weaving and so on. It would all even out and still make for some awesome fights, but the dynamic in how the fights go would shift. It would honestly make a Thor/Wonder Woman fight more visually interesting than a Hulk/Superman one. The latter would be an awesome back and forth slugfest, while Thor and Diana would be this high powered duel of skilled warriors, with Diana being a little more skilled and having her bracelets be a good defensive counter for Mjolnir, while Thor has a wider range of abilities and when his hits do land, they pack more impact.
But then again, doing RPG stuff makes me look at characters from a "balancing" perspective.

-Basic Frost Giants are extremely dangerous creatures, and even the baseline guys are PL 10 ass-whuppers who can bring down beings as powerful as Loki & Thor in large numbers (Frost Giants should VERY rarely be used with the Minion Rules). They're still big and pretty dumb, but you don't wanna screw with a 48-foot tall guy. Frost Giants are a very big "Depending on the Artist" thing- sometimes they appear as literal giants made of ice, while at other times they're big blue ogre-men. In The Incredible Hercules, one piece of backstory shows Thor & Herc victorious in a drinking contest against some Frost Giants, and are then led away by gigantic blue women for a, uh... "victory celebration". That comic was amazing.

That would be a decent compromise between the Marvel version and something not-terrible, I suppose. The version I prefer is the mythological one, where the gods of Asgard are basically people who are exceptionally strong and skilled and otherwise able, but anything overtly magical isn't inherent to them. They gain it through trial or through sweet loot. Thor's just an exceptionally strong god. He's made even stronger by his belt and his gauntlets, making him powerful enough to control Mjölnir, giving him the power of thunder. Odin gained prophecy through the sacrifice of his eye, and sorcery by hanging in an ash tree in an enlightenment quest. Heimdall... was just that awesome and vigilant. Loki could change shape... honestly, I don't know on this one. He could be the exception.Ares wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2017 11:28 pmIncidentally, that story had Thor win via using storm powers, which are inherit to him. Loki is a different type of being than the Aesir in the myths, though he's Odin's blood brother rather than his adopted son. This is probably THE major sticking point of any attempt to make Kirby's conception of Asgard resemble the sagas.BriarThrone wrote: ↑Fri Sep 29, 2017 11:57 pm
